Various preclinical atherosclerosis parameters such as lipid levels, SGOT/SGPT, body weight, histology of aorta and heart were estimated and beneficial effect of Nepitrin in high-fat diet (HFD) induced atherosclerosis for six weeks were observed. Outcomes of the preclinical results showed and proved that Nepitrin significantly improved dyslipidemia at an effective dose of 50 mg/kg as compared with HFD control and Simvastatin. Thirty-seven children (13 with severe asthma, 8 with mild/moderate asthma, 16 age-matched healthy controls) aged 6 to 17 years old were imaged with
Xe MRI. Ventilation defect percentage (VDP) and image reader score were calculated and compared with clinical measures at baseline and at follow-up.
Children with asthma had higher VDP (P= .002) and number of defects per image slice (defects/slice) (P= .0001) than children without asthma. Children with clinically severe asthma had significantly higher VDP and number of defects/slice than potential to identify children at higher risk for exacerbations and improve outcomes.

Patient involvement, in the form of shared decision-making, is advocated within healthcare. This is informed by the principlist account of patient autonomy that prioritises informed understanding, and decision-making free from coercion. This arguably over-simplifies the role of the social, whilst overlooking the role of culture and context in medical decision-making. Clinicians encourage patients to demonstrably make decisions in the principlist 'style' that fit with their understandings of ethically 'correct' ways to support patient decision-making. However, this expected 'style' is often not achieved in practice. In this article, we use empirical data from a qualitative study exploring parental decision-making following diagnosis or suspicion of a severe congenital anomaly in pregnancy. Our study was based in four fetal medicine clinics in England, comprising semi-structured interviews with 38 parents whose pregnancy was affected by a severe congenital anomaly, 18 interviews with fetal medicine clinicians, and audio-recordings of 48 consultations. Examination of the dynamics at play within different approaches to decision-making highlights how the idealised concepts proposed in theory fail to capture real-life experiences of medical decision-making. The intent of this study was to determine parents' views of the contribution of family variables to the quality of life (QoL) of children with Down Syndrome (DS). Based on prior research, we hypothesized that parents would report that family variables reflecting positive aspects of family functioning contributed to better QoL; and family variables reflecting the negative aspects of family functioning contributed to poorer QoL.
A cross-sectional study was carried out. Invitation letters were sent to DS support groups. Upon agreement, the parents of the children were sent a link to an online survey that included a consent form, demographic questionnaire, and child and family measures.
Results demonstrated the contribution of family demands to children's interpersonal relations. Family appraisals concerning the child and the family's ability predicted the children's physical and material well-being, personal development, self-determination, social inclusion, interpersonal relations, and rights. Family problem-solving served as a prominent predictor for children's physical and emotional well-being, personal development, interpersonal relations, and rights. Also, family resources predicted various aspects of children's QoL including physical, emotional, and material well-being, self-determination, social inclusion, interpersonal relations, and rights.
Results confirmed the significant relationship between family and children's QoL variables. Family appraisal and family problem-solving were especially identified as significant predictors of children's QoL that can be targeted for family interventions, since the family variables are modifiable aspects of family life.

Patient involvement, in the form of shared decision-making, is advocated within healthcare. This is informed by the principlist account of patient autonomy that prioritises informed understanding, and decision-making free from coercion. This arguably over-simplifies the role of the social, whilst overlooking the role of culture and context in medical decision-making. Clinicians encourage patients to demonstrably make decisions in the principlist 'style' that fit with their understandings of ethically 'correct' ways to support patient decision-making. However, this expected 'style' is often not achieved in practice. In this article, we use empirical data from a qualitative study exploring parental decision-making following diagnosis or suspicion of a severe congenital anomaly in pregnancy. Our study was based in four fetal medicine clinics in England, comprising semi-structured interviews with 38 parents whose pregnancy was affected by a severe congenital anomaly, 18 interviews with fetal medicine clinicians, and audio-recordings of 48 consultations. Examination of the dynamics at play within different approaches to decision-making highlights how the idealised concepts proposed in theory fail to capture real-life experiences of medical decision-making. The caucus focused on the major challenges that women in radiology have faced during the pandemic. The intent of this study was to determine parents' views of the contribution of family variables to the quality of life (QoL) of children with Down Syndrome (DS). Based on prior research, we hypothesized that parents would report that family variables reflecting positive aspects of family functioning contributed to better QoL; and family variables reflecting the negative aspects of family functioning contributed to poorer QoL. A cross-sectional study was carried out. Invitation letters were sent to DS support groups. Upon agreement, the parents of the children were sent a link to an online survey that included a consent form, demographic questionnaire, and child and family measures. Results demonstrated the contribution of family demands to children's interpersonal relations. Family appraisals concerning the child and the family's ability predicted the children's physical and material well-being, personal development, self-determination, social inclusion, interpersonal relations, and rights. Family problem-solving served as a prominent predictor for children's physical and emotional well-being, personal development, interpersonal relations, and rights. Also, family resources predicted various aspects of children's QoL including physical, emotional, and material well-being, self-determination, social inclusion, interpersonal relations, and rights. Results confirmed the significant relationship between family and children's QoL variables. The Manageable Geriatric Assessment (MAGIC) questionnaire, recently developed by a group of European family doctors for multidimensional geriatric assessment in primary care, has not yet been evaluated in clinical practice. The objectives of this study were to translate and adapt it to Spanish and to check the association between the limitations of older adults identified by this questionnaire and their perceived health status assessed by the five-level version of the EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D-5L). First, questionnaire translation, **** translation and cognitive test were applied. Then, a cross-sectional observational study was performed in two Spanish health centers Galicia, Spain. Participants were 170 people aged over 75, recruited opportunistically by consecutive case sampling. Anonymous surveys were used to collect data. The MAGIC questionnaire, the EQ-5D-5L scale, age and sex were employed. The visual analog scale of EQ-5D-5L (EQ VAS) was used as the outcome variable. Descriptive and bivariate analyses by sex and outcome variable are presented. The linear regression analysis showed an association with quality of life for daily activities, recognizing people and stress incontinence. As this is associated with quality of life, the MAGIC questionnaire may be useful in primary care and a study to investigate the impact on health with a clinical trial would be worth considering.A 32-year-old man was referred to the Division of Orthodontics of the University of Naples "Federico II", with a 15-year history of gradually increasing right-sided facial asymmetry. Clinical and radiological examinations was consistent to hemimandibular hyperplasia, a rare developmental asymmetry characterized by three-dimensional enlargement of one-half of the mandible. The standard surgical-orthodontic management was proposed to the patient. However, he refused to undergo bimaxillary orthognatic surgery. Therefore, a different treatment was proposed based on the orthodontic technique of pre-surgical decompensation and post-surgical refinement used in bimaxillary orthognatic surgery planning, and surgical intervention with a condylectomy. The dental arches were evenly levelled out with a multi-bracket treatment and then the condylectomy was performed. Orthodontic treatment continued with a levelling and torque control by 0.19 × 0.25 SS arch and physiotherapy. At the three-month follow-up, the patient showed anterior and posterior bite rebalancing, arch intercuspation recovery, and anterior open bite closure due to muscular self-rebalancing. The two-year follow-up showed regular mandibular dynamic, orthodontic appliances were removed, and the patient was instructed to wear retainer for the following months. The final result was aesthetically reasonable for the patient, although slight asymmetry of the chin persisted.(1) Oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma is common in Africa and has a male preponderance. The gender-based differences in clinical presentation and risk factor exposure are poorly studied in the African context. Our aim was to compare males and females with this disease. We analyzed the differences in clinical features and risk factor exposure between males and females with oesophageal cancer. (2) Data from patients presenting to a tertiary hospital in South Africa with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma were analyzed. Data collected included patient demographics, clinical presentation, pathology and risk factor exposure. (3) Three hundred and sixty three patients were included in the study. Biocompatible and non-toxic biopolymers such as chitosan, cellulose and alginates have been used to deliver antibiotics, plants extract, essential oils and metallic nanoparticles. Antibacterial aerogels have been used in superficial and chronic wound healing as dressing sheets. This review critically analyses the utilization of biopolymer-based aerogels in antibacterial delivery. The analysis shows the relationship between their properties and their applications in the wound healing process. Furthermore, highlights of the potentials, challenges and proposition of the application of biopolymer-based aerogels is explored.Percutaneous deep venous arterialization (pDVA) is a developing technique for limb salvage in patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia by creating an arteriovenous (AV) circuit. After pDVA, patency of the AV circuit is evaluated using duplex ultrasound (DUS) imaging. Peak systolic velocity (PSV) and volume flow (VF) values for maintaining a patent AV circuit are undefined; therefore, guidance about when a reintervention should be performed is lacking. The objective of this study was to interpret post-pDVA PSV and VF values in relation to AV circuit preservation. This was performed by analyzing DUS results of 22 post-pDVA patients. A total of 670 PSV and 623 VF measurements were collected. A PSV value of ≤55 cm/s and a VF value of ≤195 mL/min were found predictive for failure. The reliability of PSV and VF measurements in patent AV-circuits was good (intraclass correlation coefficient; PSV, 0.85; VF, 0.88). In conclusion, this study is the first to analyze DUS measurements in post-pDVA patients and showed that DUS can be used to anticipate for failure.

Stem cells in plants constantly supply daughter cells to form new organs and are expected to safeguard the integrity of the cells from biological invasion. Here, we show how stem cells of the Arabidopsis shoot apical meristem and their nascent daughter cells suppress infection by cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). The stem cell regulator WUSCHEL responds to CMV infection and represses virus accumulation in the meristem central and peripheral zones. WUSCHEL inhibits viral protein synthesis by repressing the expression of plant S-adenosyl-l-methionine-dependent methyltransferases, which are involved in ribosomal RNA processing and ribosome stability. Our results reveal a conserved strategy in plants to protect stem cells against viral intrusion and provide a molecular basis for WUSCHEL-mediated broad-spectrum innate antiviral immunity in plants.Most information loss in cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) stems from particle movement during imaging, which remains poorly understood. We show that this movement is caused by buckling and subsequent deformation of the suspended ice, with a threshold that depends directly on the shape of the frozen water layer set by the support foil. We describe a specimen support design that eliminates buckling and reduces electron beam-induced particle movement to less than 1 angstrom. The design allows precise foil tracking during imaging with high-speed detectors, thereby lessening demands on cryostage precision and stability. It includes a maximal density of holes, which increases throughput in automated cryo-EM without degrading data quality. Movement-free imaging allows extrapolation to a three-dimensional map of the specimen at zero electron exposure, before the onset of radiation damage.Environmental change is transforming ecological assemblages into new configurations, resulting in novel communities. We developed a robust methodology to detect novel communities, examine patterns of emergence, and quantify probabilities of local demographic turnover in transitions to and from novel communities. Using a global dataset of Cenozoic marine plankton communities, we found that the probability of local extinction, origination, and emigration during transitions to a novel community increased two to four times that of background community changes. Although rare, novel communities were five times more likely than chance to shift into another novel state. Using a global dataset of Cenozoic marine plankton communities, we found that the probability of local extinction, origination, and emigration during transitions to a novel community increased two to four times that of background community changes. Although rare, novel communities were five times more likely than chance to shift into another novel state. For marine plankton communities at a 100,000-year time grain, novel communities were sensitive to further extinctions and substantial community change.In place of functional groups that impose different inductive effects, we immobilize molecules carrying thiol groups on a gold electrode. RESULTS In summary, after correcting for population structure, we found that SCZ and ASD cases could be successfully separated based on genetic information, with 86-88% accuracy on the testing dataset. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to investigate factors associated with neonatal outcomes. RESULTS Women with a previous baby weighing > 4 kg were 6.08 times more likely to experience neonatal macrosomia (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 6.08; 95%CI 2.46, 15.01). Compared to unmarried women, the odds of macrosomia among married women reduced by 71% (AOR = 0.29; 95%CI 0.11, 0.77). Compared with delivery before 38 weeks of gestation, the infants of women who delivered between 38 and 41 weeks of gestation were 62 and 86% less likely to experience neonatal hypoglycaemia and Apgar score 4 kg, had pre-eclampsia, delivered before 38 weeks of gestation, and those who booked later than 13 weeks in gestation, are needed to improve pregnancy outcomes.PURPOSE To describe the incidence and management of gastrointestinal tract Buckyball magnets ingestions in a multicenter Chinese pediatric patient population, and discuss the preventive measures. The follow-up was through telephone and outpatient service to estimate the post-surgery condition. Information collection was through online questionnaire. RESULTS Among the 74 cases, there were 50 boys (68%) and 24 girls (32%). The median age was 36 (interquartile range (IQR) 22-77) months, with a range of 7 months to 11 years, and it showed two peaks, the first between 1 and 3 years, and the second between 6 to 11 years. The annual case number showed a sharp increase over time, and the total case number in the last 2 years (2017 and 2018) showed a greater than 9-fold increase when compared with the first 2 years (2013 and 2014).

To determine if a machine-learning (ML) program can accurately predict the postoperative thoracic kyphosis through the uninstrumented thoracic spine and pelvic compensation in patients who undergo fusion from the lower thoracic spine (T10 or T11) to the sacrum.
From 2015 to 2019, a consecutive series of adult (≥18 years old) patients with adult spinal deformity underwent corrective spinal fusion from the lower thoracic spine (T10 or T11) to the sacrum. Deidentified data was processed by a ML system-based platform to predict the postoperative thoracic kyphosis (TK) and pelvic tilt (PT) for each patient. To validate the ML model, the postoperative TK (T4-T12, instrumented thoracic, and uninstrumented thoracic) and the pelvic tilt were compared against the predicted values.
A total of 20 adult patients with a minimum 6-month follow-up (mean 22.4 ± 11.3 months) were included in this study. No significant differences were observed for TK (predicted 37.6° vs postoperative 38.3yphosis in this population.Leishmania amazonensis is a species causative of cutaneous and anergic diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis, treatment-resistant form, in the New World. Plants essential oils exhibit great potential as microbicide agents. We described the composition of the essential oils of two plants native from Brazil, Myrcia ovata, with geranial and neral as major constituents, and Eremanthus erythropappus, with α-bisabolol. In vitro effects of these essential oils on L. amazonensis promastigotes growth and ultrastructure were analysed as well as their cytotoxicity to murine macrophages. Both oils were highly active with IC50/96 h of 8.69 and 9.53 µg/mL for M. ovata and E. erythropappus against promastigotes and caused ultrastructural alterations including mitochondrial enlargement. Cytotoxicity for murine macrophages varied with the oil concentrations. The IC50 low values of both M. ovata and E. erythropappus oils against L. amazonensis and their relative low cytotoxicity to mammal host cells support their potential use against cutaneous leishmaniasis.Amlodipine-induced toxicity has detrimental effects on cardiac cells. LY 294002 and glibenclamide partially reversed lipid emulsion-mediated attenuation of decreased cell viability and count induced by amlodipine. Amlodipine increased caspase-3 and -8 expression, but it did not alter Bax expression. LY 294002 and glibenclamide reversed lipid emulsion-mediated inhibition of cleaved caspase-3 and -8 expression induced by amlodipine. Lipid emulsion inhibited early and late apoptosis induced by amlodipine. LY 294002 and glibenclamide inhibited lipid emulsion-mediated inhibition of late apoptosis induced by amlodipine, but they did not significantly alter lipid emulsion-mediated inhibition of early apoptosis induced by amlodipine. Lipid emulsion decreased amlodipine-induced TUNEL-positive cells. These results suggest that lipid emulsion inhibits late apoptosis induced by amlodipine at toxic dose via the activation of phosphoinositide-3 kinase and ATP-sensitive potassium channels in the extrinsic apoptotic pathway.
This project's focus was on improving neurosurgical theatre efficiency through the application of Javed etal's Golden Patient initiative to the emergency theatre setting. This initiative has not previously been used in neurosurgery, so we have had to consider how to adapt it. Phase I's primary objective was to quantify theatre start time delays. Phase II assessed whether introducing the initiative reduced the delays.
We performed an observational retrospective service evaluation project. Data was collected on weekday theatre start times over 12-week periods pre- and post-initiative. We quantified the delay in theatre start times and recorded the reasons for delays. Following the initiative's introduction, we repeated the evaluation process. Mean and median theatre start times were compared. An ANOVA test was used to confirm statistical significance.
Data was collected on 49 days and on 48 days over 12-week periods in both Phase I and II respectively. Phase I of this project identified that there was on but also to further improvements in the quality of care provided to our neurosurgical patients.
We have identified a statistically significant improvement in reducing theatre start time delays following the introduction of the initiative. This relatively simple intervention improved communication amongst the multidisciplinary team and led to a notable improvement in the service provided to patients by reducing start time delays. Through tackling identified areas, we hope to further reduce theatre start time delays leading not only to financial savings but also to further improvements in the quality of care provided to our neurosurgical patients.
Hedgehog signaling pathway (Hh) is abnormally stimulated in colon cancer. Evidence suggests the therapeutic effectiveness of andrographolide against several cancers. This study attempts to delineate the effect of andrographolide on Hh signaling pathway in colon cancer HCT-116 cells.
Effects of andrographolide were studied on HCT-116 cells by evaluating cytotoxicity by MTT assay, morphology assessment, trypan blue exclusion, and colony formation assay; migratory potential by scratch assay; apoptosis by DAPI, Hoechst staining, FITC-Annexin V assay, and caspases activation; mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) by Mito Tracker and Rhodamine 123. Andrographolide induced antiproliferative effect on HCT-116 cells in a dose-dependent and time-dependent manner. It also induced apoptosis and anti-migratory effect in HCT-116 cells.

Phase I of this project identified that there was on but also to further improvements in the quality of care provided to our neurosurgical patients. We have identified a statistically significant improvement in reducing theatre start time delays following the introduction of the initiative. This relatively simple intervention improved communication amongst the multidisciplinary team and led to a notable improvement in the service provided to patients by reducing start time delays. Through tackling identified areas, we hope to further reduce theatre start time delays leading not only to financial savings but also to further improvements in the quality of care provided to our neurosurgical patients. The relationship between the green technology innovation level (GTIL) and the environmental regulation intensity is analyzed. Through numerical examples, the influences of environmental regulation and consumer preference on system decisions are further examined. Moreover, an econometric model is constructed to explore the influence that the environmental regulation exerts on the GTIL using panel data from the Chinese manufacturing industry. Our results show that the increase in environmental regulation intensity contributes to improving GTIL and promoting the GTU of manufacturing enterprises. Furthermore, as the environmental regulation is enhanced, the sales price decreases, benefiting consumers. Consumers' preference for high-GTIL products is conducive to GTU under environmental regulation. Empirical analysis shows that there is a U-shaped relationship between environmental regulation and the GTIL. BACKGROUND Diarrhea, particularly of enteric bacterial pathogen, remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Ethiopia. Despite the high prevalence of diarrheal disease among under-five children, antibiotic resistance of bacterial pathogens test is not part of routine childcare in the study area. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility status of Salmonella and Shigella species among diarrheic children attending public health institutions in Ambo town, west Showa, Ethiopia. METHODS Institutional based, cross-sectional study was carried out from January to July 2014 among 239 diarrheic children below five years of age in Ambo town, Ethiopia. Information about patient demographics, signs, and symptoms was obtained from the parents/guardians of each child using a questionnaire. Stool samples from diarrheic children were collected and processed for isolation of Salmonella and Shigella using conventional microbiology procedures. Suspected Salmonella isolates were confis of diarrhea in the study area. A further study targeting other causes of diarrhea should be conducted to establish the major causes of childhood diarrhea in the study area.BACKGROUND A rapidly ageing population with increasing prevalence of chronic disease presents policymakers the urgent task of tailoring healthcare services to optimally meet changing needs. The aim of this prospective cohort, community setting study is to evaluate 4 segmentation schemes in terms of practicality and predictive validity for future health outcomes and service utilization. METHODS A cohort was identified from a cross-sectional health and social characteristics survey of Singapore public rental housing residents aged 60 years and above. Baseline survey data was used to assign individuals into segments as defined by 4 predefined population segmentation schemes developed in Singapore, Delaware, Lombardy and North-Wes, with significant overlap for some segments. Healthcare needs-based segmentation schemes which are designed to guide action hold particular promise for promoting efficient allocation of services to meet the needs of salient population groups. METHODS Twenty-five participants participated in three focus groups and/or a survey. They were purposively sampled for variation in region of residence, and sensitivity to patient well-being. Focus group recordings were analyzed using descriptive coding, in vivo coding, and thematic analysis. RESULTS Patients define unstable sessions ("bad runs") as those in which they experience severe discomfort or unanticipated events that interfere with their ability to receive therapy. Bad runs were characterized primarily by cramping, low blood pressure ("crashing"), cannulation-related difficulties ("bad sticks"), and clotting of the dialysis circuit or vascular access. Patients believed that cramping and crashing could be explained by both patient and clinician behavior patient fluid consumption and providers' fluid removal goals. Patients felt that the responsibility for cannulation-related problems lay with dialysis staff, and they asked for different staff or self-cannulated as solutions. Clotting was viewed as an idiosyncratic issue with one's body, and perceived solutions were clinician-driven. Patients expressed concern about "bad runs" on their ability to achieve fluid balance. Patients with FBG > 6.1 mmol/L were divided into elevated FBG group. The incidence of in-hospital adverse events were compared in elevated RBG/FBG group and the control group.
