The association between exposure and post-switch virologic outcome was measured by marginal hazard ratio estimated using the Inverse probability weighting Cox model.Among the 1199 eligible PLHIV, 478 (39.9%) previously experienced at least one virologic failure or were exposed to mono/dual therapy before dolutegravir switch. Post-switch virologic failure after 30 months occurred in 4.1% (95% CI 2.1-7.9) of exposed compared to 4.1% (95% CI 2.3-7.4) in unexposed participants. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to explore the prevalence and related factors of depression among people with disabilities in communities in mainland China.Participants with disability certificates were recruited via face-to-face interviews to complete questionnaires. Contents include participants' demographic characteristics, the Modified Barthel Index (MBI), chronic medical history, and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9).A total of 1815 participants (M age = 60.35 ± 13.66) whose questionnaires are eligible were finally included. Among them the incidence rate of depressive symptoms was up to 39.9%. Multifactor regression analysis showed that grade I disability (odds ratio (OR) = 1.37, P less then .05), impairment activities of daily living (OR = 3.23, P less then .001), diabetes (OR = 1.43, P less then .05), and hyperlipidemia (OR = 1.59, P less then .001) were associated with depression in the disabled. However, intelligence disability is a protective factor of depression (OR = 0.69, P less then .05).The data demonstrates that the depression of the disabled should arouse the attention of our society. Furthermore, the interventions to disability degree, impairment activities of daily living, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia may help to improve the mental health of the disabled people.

Abnormal decision making can result in detrimental outcomes of clinical importance, and decision making is strongly linked to neural prediction error signalling. Activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analyses were used to examine the neural correlates of prediction error signals of individuals taking different types of substances and healthy controls with contrast and conjunction analyses. Twenty-eight studies were included in the meta-analysis, representing 424 substance users' individuals and 834 healthy control individuals. Robust brain activity associated with prediction error signals in substance users was found for the bilateral striatum and insula. Healthy control subjects also activated bilateral striatum, midbrain, right insula and right medial-inferior frontal gyrus. Compared with healthy controls, substance users showed blunted activity in the bilateral putamen, right medial-inferior frontal gyrus and insula. The current meta-analysis of cross-sectional findings investigated neural prediction error signals in substance users. PE abnormalities in substance users might be related to poor decision making. In conclusion, the present study helps identify the pathophysiological underpinnings of maladaptive decision making in substance users.

We identified a heterozygous variant, c.388G>A, p.Gly130Arg, in the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 alpha kinase 2 (EIF2AK2) gene, segregating with early onset isolated generalized dystonia in 5 patients of a Taiwanese family. EIF2AK2 sequencing in 191 unrelated patients with unexplained dystonia yielded 2 unrelated Caucasian patients with an identical heterozygous c.388G>A, p.Gly130Arg variant, occurring de novo in one case, another patient carrying a different heterozygous variant, c.413G>C, p.Gly138Ala, and one last patient, born from consanguineous parents, carrying a third, homozygous variant c.95A>C, p.Asn32Thr. These 3 missense variants are absent from gnomAD, and are loc85-497.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with elevation of many cytokines particularly IL-6; however, the role of IL-6 in NAFLD remains obscure. The aim of this study was to examine how myeloid-specific IL-6 signaling affects NAFLD via the regulation of anti-fibrotic microRNA-223 in myeloid cells.

It remains uncertain whether the hypertension (HT) medications angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) mitigate or exacerbate SARS-CoV-2 infection. We evaluated the association of ACEi and ARB with severe coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) as defined by hospitalization or mortality among individuals diagnosed with COVID-19. We investigated whether these associations were modified by age, the simultaneous use of the diuretic thiazide, and the health conditions associated with medication use. In an observational study utilizing data from a Massachusetts group medical practice, we identified 1449 patients with a COVID-19 diagnosis. In our study, pre-infection comorbidities including HT, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes were associated with increased risk of severe COVID-19. Risk was further elevated in patients under age 65 with these comorbidities or cancer. Twenty percent of those with severe COVID-19 compared to 9% with less severe COVID-19 used ACEi, 8% and 4%, respectively, used ARB. In propensity score-matched analyses, use of neither ACEi (OR = 1.30, 95% CI 0.93 to 1.81) nor ARB (OR = 0.94, 95% CI 0.57 to 1.55) was associated with increased risk of severe COVID-19. Thiazide use did not modify this relationship. Beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, and anticoagulant medications were not associated with COVID-19 severity. In conclusion, cardiovascular-related comorbidities were associated with severe COVID-19 outcomes, especially among patients under age 65. We found no substantial increased risk of severe COVID-19 among patients taking antihypertensive medications. Numerous microRNAs (miRNAs) have been identified as functional molecules in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. It remains uncertain whether the hypertension (HT) medications angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) mitigate or exacerbate SARS-CoV-2 infection. We evaluated the association of ACEi and ARB with severe coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) as defined by hospitalization or mortality among individuals diagnosed with COVID-19. We investigated whether these associations were modified by age, the simultaneous use of the diuretic thiazide, and the health conditions associated with medication use. In an observational study utilizing data from a Massachusetts group medical practice, we identified 1449 patients with a COVID-19 diagnosis. In our study, pre-infection comorbidities including HT, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes were associated with increased risk of severe COVID-19. Risk was further elevated in patients under age 65 with these comorbidities or cancer. Twenty percent of those with severe COVID-19 compared to 9% with less severe COVID-19 used ACEi, 8% and 4%, respectively, used ARB. In propensity score-matched analyses, use of neither ACEi (OR = 1.30, 95% CI 0.93 to 1.81) nor ARB (OR = 0.94, 95% CI 0.57 to 1.55) was associated with increased risk of severe COVID-19. Thiazide use did not modify this relationship. Beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, and anticoagulant medications were not associated with COVID-19 severity. In conclusion, cardiovascular-related comorbidities were associated with severe COVID-19 outcomes, especially among patients under age 65. We found no substantial increased risk of severe COVID-19 among patients taking antihypertensive medications. This paper describes a method to fully automate the cell state recognition based on phase contrast microscopy and deep-learning. This approach can be used for in process control during an automated hiPSC cultivation. The U-Net based algorithm is capable of segmenting important parameters of hiPSC colony formation and can discriminate between the classes hiPSC colony, single cells, differentiated cells and dead cells. The model achieves more accurate results for the classes hiPSC colonies, differentiated cells, single hiPSCs and dead cells than visual estimation by a skilled expert. Furthermore, parameters for each hiPSC colony are derived directly from the classification result such as roundness, size, center of gravity and inclusions of other cells. These parameters provide localized information about the cell state and enable well based treatment of the cell culture in automated processes. Thus, the model can be exploited for routine, non-invasive image analysis during an automated hiPSC cultivation. This facilitates the generation of high quality hiPSC derived products for biomedical purposes.

Circadian rhythm is well known to play a pivotal role in reproduction but the presence of a gonadal circadian rhythm is opening a lot of questions about a local regulation of reproduction. In the present study, we first set to identify the key genes driving circadian rhythmicity from the gonadal transcriptome of the swordfish, a commercially relevant species undergoing overfishing, and we then investigated whether their transcriptional activity was influenced by the maturation stage. Finally, we explored whether seasonality had the ability to modulate the expression of these genes. Interestingly, we identified a wide number of circadian rhythm related genes in the transcriptome of the swordfish gonad including, among the others, clock, bmal1, cry2 and per2, which have been found to be differentially expressed between sexually immature and mature individuals sampled during the breeding season. This differential modulation was also found for melatonin biosynthesis genes (mel1b, asmt and tph1) as well as opsin genes (opsin4, tmt opsin, parapinopsin, VA opsin, rho and sws), known to be the primary receptors of light stimuli. These differences were not observed between mature and immature individuals when considering the non-breeding season suggesting that, despite the molecular machinery of mature gonads is able to respond to signals driving ovarian maturation, these signals are not present hence highlighting the potential role of seasonality in modulating the gonadal circadian rhythm. These results confirm the presence of a gonadal circadian rhythm in the swordfish and open new interesting questions about its role in driving puberty onset.
The arrest and the post-arrest period are an incredibly emotionally traumatic time for family and friends of the affected individual. There is a need to assess prognosis early in the patient pathway to offer objective, realistic and non-emotive information to the next-of-kin regarding the likelihood of survival.
To present a systematic review of the clinical risk scores available to assess patients on admission following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) which can predict in-hospital mortality.
A systematic search of online databases Embase, MEDLINE and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials was conducted up until 20th November 2020.
Out of 1,817 initial articles, we identified a total of 28 scoring systems, with 11 of the scores predicting mortality following OHCA included in this review. The majority of the scores included arrest characteristics (initial rhythm and time to return of spontaneous circulation) as prognostic indicators. Out of these, the 3 most clinically-useful scores, namely those which are easy-to-use, comprise of commonly available parameters and measurements, and which have high predictive value are the OHCA, NULL-PLEASE, and rCAST scores, which appear to perform similarly. Of these, the NULL-PLEASE score is the easiest to calculate and has also been externally validated.
Clinicians should be aware of these risk scores, which can be used to provide objective, nonemotive and reproducible information to the next-of-kin on the likely prognosis following OHCA. However, in isolation, these scores should not form the basis for clinical decision-making.

The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of Cobalt-60 gamma irradiation on crosslinking polymeric hydrogels (Hydg) and the incorporation of Amph-B into the gel as a controlled-release drug delivery alternative. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/Amph-B solutions were irradiated with 15 kGy at 0 °C and 25 °C. The drug's stability was ascertained by UV-visible spectrometry, liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry and proton nuclear magnetic resonance. Based on our MD simulation results, we propose that the binding of arbidol induces structural rigidity in the viral glycoprotein, thus restricting the conformational rearrangements associated with membrane fusion and virus entry. Furthermore, key residues of the RBD and ACE2 that interact with arbidol were identified, opening the door for developing therapeutic strategies and higher-efficacy arbidol derivatives or lead drug candidates.
Circadian rhythm is well known to play a pivotal role in reproduction but the presence of a gonadal circadian rhythm is opening a lot of questions about a local regulation of reproduction. In the present study, we first set to identify the key genes driving circadian rhythmicity from the gonadal transcriptome of the swordfish, a commercially relevant species undergoing overfishing, and we then investigated whether their transcriptional activity was influenced by the maturation stage. Finally, we explored whether seasonality had the ability to modulate the expression of these genes. Interestingly, we identified a wide number of circadian rhythm related genes in the transcriptome of the swordfish gonad including, among the others, clock, bmal1, cry2 and per2, which have been found to be differentially expressed between sexually immature and mature individuals sampled during the breeding season. This differential modulation was also found for melatonin biosynthesis genes (mel1b, asmt and tph1) as well as opsin genes (opsin4, tmt opsin, parapinopsin, VA opsin, rho and sws), known to be the primary receptors of light stimuli. These differences were not observed between mature and immature individuals when considering the non-breeding season suggesting that, despite the molecular machinery of mature gonads is able to respond to signals driving ovarian maturation, these signals are not present hence highlighting the potential role of seasonality in modulating the gonadal circadian rhythm. To present a systematic review of the clinical risk scores available to assess patients on admission following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) which can predict in-hospital mortality. A systematic search of online databases Embase, MEDLINE and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials was conducted up until 20th November 2020. Out of 1,817 initial articles, we identified a total of 28 scoring systems, with 11 of the scores predicting mortality following OHCA included in this review. The majority of the scores included arrest characteristics (initial rhythm and time to return of spontaneous circulation) as prognostic indicators. Out of these, the 3 most clinically-useful scores, namely those which are easy-to-use, comprise of commonly available parameters and measurements, and which have high predictive value are the OHCA, NULL-PLEASE, and rCAST scores, which appear to perform similarly. Of these, the NULL-PLEASE score is the easiest to calculate and has also been externally validated. An organized groundwater sampling was conducted for hydrogeochemical investigation in rural areas along the Belbies unlined drain. This drain is known of being heavily polluted by agricultural and municipal wastewater. The hydrogeochemical analysis reveals high pollution levels by Pb, Cd, and Cr for most of the collected shallow groundwater samples nearby the drain. Additionally, NO3-, fecal and total coliform bacteria were observed in many samples with high concentrations. Six factors were distinguished on the basis of principal component analysis and varimax rotation, with total variance more than 78%. These factors reflected sewage contamination, lithogenic and anthropogenic effects on the shallow groundwater. Hierarchical cluster analysis revealed two main clusters of groundwater groups. Accordingly, Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) was carried out in the areas of the distinguished clusters to locate potential preferential flow paths and horizons of lateral flow around the drain. The obtained resistivity models illustrate breakthrough behavior in parts of the measured profiles due to the presence of permeable paths close to the drain. The applied integrative approach is valuable for understanding the ambiguities during the interpretation process and for characterizing water quality and the aquifer vulnerability conditions. Additionally, it may guide to understand the surface water-groundwater links in order to supply the growing population with safe water.Surface tension isotherms and calculated air-water interfacial (AWI) adsorption data are presented for solution mixtures of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), specifically a series of binary and one ternary mixtures of homologous linear perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) in a simulated groundwater, and two 8-component mixtures containing both PFCAs and linear perfluoroalkane sulfonates (PFSAs). In all cases, non-ideal competitive adsorption was observed that favored the most surface-active component(s) of the solution mixture. The multi-component extended Langmuir (EL) isotherm model was observed to accurately predict the competitive adsorption observed in the binary and ternary PFCA solution mixtures. However, the predictive utility of the EL model was observed to diminish when mixtures contained both PFCAs and PFSAs, which differ in their hydrophile structure, resulting in overpredictions and underpredictions of the AWI adsorption isotherms derived from measured data depending on the specific components present in the solution mixtures. Observations indicate that the individual component adsorptive affinities for the AWI can change in response to competitive preferential adsorption as their solution concentrations increase that is not being captured by the EL model. Our results demonstrate that alternative mathematical models are needed that support concentration dependent affinity coefficients for non-similar mixtures of PFAS, such that the transport of individual target PFAS components within a larger mixture of components can be accurately predicted across a wider range of solution concentration.
Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a rare autoimmune neurologic disease characterized by painful rigidity and muscle spasms. Patients with SPS may present with psychiatric symptoms, and little is known about the presence of psychiatric comorbidities.
The objective of this study was to provide an overview of the association between SPS and psychiatric illnesses.
The protocol is registered in PROSPERO (Registration ID CRD42020159354). Peer-reviewed articles on adults with SPS and psychiatric comorbidities published before May 26, 2020, were selected by 2 independent reviewers. Qualitative summary data and relative risk of psychiatric disorders in patients with SPS compared with the general population and multiple sclerosis were calculated.
After screening 909 articles, 52 full texts were assessed for eligibility and 27 were ultimately included, 5 of which were selected for quantitative analysis. Although limited by small sample sizes leading to large confidence intervals, the relative risk of any psychiatric comorbidity in SPS was higher than that of the general population, ranging from estimates of 6.09 (95% confidence interval 4.09, 9.08) to 11.25 (95% confidence interval 3.27, 38.66). There was no statistically significant difference in the risk of any psychiatric comorbidity between SPS and multiple sclerosis. The review also highlighted delays in SPS diagnosis, often related to misattribution of symptoms as being solely secondary to a psychiatric cause.

Despite advances in our knowledge, the pathogenesis and alterations in the biochemical pathways underlying this disease are still not fully understood. PCOS is a multifactorial syndrome where a combination of genetics, lifestyle, and hormone abnormalities all play an intertwining role. This article will provide an in-depth look at the multitude of biochemical pathways that are dysregulated in PCOS and their relation to alterations in female physiology.Public health laboratories have played a central role in the US response to COVID-19. Since the earliest days, myriad issues have impeded the laboratory community's ability to keep pace with the overwhelming demand for effective tests. In this article, the Association of Public Health Laboratories and a subset of its members examine the response to date and evaluate lessons learned from 4 main categories testing surges, supplies, staffing, and regulations and policy. Within these categories, the authors offer recommendations intended both to improve the ongoing COVID-19 response and to strengthen planning for future outbreaks.
Case investigation and contact tracing are fundamental public health strategies for controlling and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Although the principles behind these strategies are not new, the capacity and operational requirements needed to support disease investigation during the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic are unprecedented. This article analyzes the implementation of case investigation and contact tracing in controlling COVID-19 transmission during the early stages of the US pandemic response (January 20 through August 31, 2020).
Governmental public health agencies mobilized to expand case investigation and contact tracing programs in the early months of the pandemic. In doing so, they encountered a range of challenges that included rapidly scaling up the workforce; developing and subsequently revising guidance and protocols specific to COVID-19 as more was learned about the virus over time; defining job functions; encouraging public acceptance of and participation in case investigchange of promising practices can support jurisdictions encountering early implementation challenges. Further research is needed to assess COVID-19 case investigation and contact tracing program models and innovations, as well as strategies for implementing these activities during containment and mitigation phases.Responding to introductions of diseases and conditions of unknown etiology is a critical public health function. In late December 2019, investigation of a cluster of pneumonia cases of unknown origin in Wuhan, China, resulted in the identification of a novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In March, 2020, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causal agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), was spreading in the Bay Area, especially in Santa Clara County, causing increases in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.
The Association of Bay Area Health Officials (ABAHO) represents 13 Bay Area health jurisdictions.
On March 15, 2020, the local health officers of 7 ABAHO members (counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara and the city of Berkeley) decided to issue legal orders on March 16 for 6.7 million residents to shelter in place to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the causal agent of COVID-19. The Bay Area was the first region in the United States to shelter in place, and within days, other regions in the United States followed.
Subsequent comparative analyses have confirmed that acting early in issuing shelter-in-place orders prevented a large number of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths in the Bay Area throughoeadership, and decision intelligence. Our purpose is to improve the crisis decision-making skills of public health officials by improving how we make high-stakes decisions each day in our continuing fight to contain the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, to save lives, and to eliminate COVID-19 racial/ethnic inequities.

The Association of Bay Area Health Officials (ABAHO) represents 13 Bay Area health jurisdictions. On March 15, 2020, the local health officers of 7 ABAHO members (counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara and the city of Berkeley) decided to issue legal orders on March 16 for 6.7 million residents to shelter in place to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the causal agent of COVID-19. The Bay Area was the first region in the United States to shelter in place, and within days, other regions in the United States followed. There has been increasing attention to screening for health-related social needs. However, little is known about the screening practices of emergency departments (EDs). Within New England, we seek to identify the prevalence of ED screening for health-related social needs, understand the factors associated with screening, and understand how screening patterns for health-related social needs differ from those for violence, substance use, and mental health needs.
We analyzed data from the 2018 National Emergency Department Inventory-New England survey, which was administered to all 194 New England EDs during 2019. We used descriptive statistics to compare ED characteristics by screening practices, and multivariable logistic regression models to identify factors associated with screening.
Among the 166 (86%) responding EDs, 64 (39%) reported screening for at least one health-related social need, 160 (96%) for violence (including intimate partner violence or other violent exposures), 148 (89%) for substance use disorder, and 159 (96%) for mental health needs. EDs reported a wide range of social work resources to address identified needs, with 155 (93%) reporting any social worker availability and 41 (27%) reporting continuous availability.

EDs have relatively limited resources available to address health-related social needs. Little is known about the cause or optimal treatment of hyperemesis in habitual cannabis users. Anecdotal evidence supports the use of haloperidol over traditional antiemetics for this newly recognized disorder. We compare haloperidol with ondansetron for cannabis hyperemesis syndrome.
We randomized cannabis users with active emesis to either haloperidol (with a nested randomization to either 0.05 or 0.1 mg/kg) or ondansetron 8 mg intravenously in a triple-blind fashion. The primary outcome was the reduction from baseline in abdominal pain and nausea (each measured on a 10-cm visual analog scale) at 2 hours after treatment. Although the trial allowed for crossover, the primary analysis used only the first treatment period because few subjects crossed over.
We enrolled 33 subjects, of whom 30 (16 men, aged 29 years [SD 11 years] using 1.5 g/day [SD 0.9 g/day] since age 19 years [SD 2 years]) received at least 1 treatment (haloperidol 13, ondansetron 17). Despite optimal improvement in motor functioning, both short- and long-term studies have reported small but consistent changes in cognitive functioning following STN-DBS in Parkinson's disease (PD). The aim of the present study was to explore whether surgical characteristics were associated with cognitive decline one year following STN-DBS.
We retrospectively analyzed 49 PD patients who underwent bilateral STN-DBS. Cognitive change scores were related to the number of microelectrode recording (MER) trajectories, the STN length as measured by MER, and cortical entry points. Regression analyses were corrected for age at surgery, disease duration, education and preoperative levodopa responsiveness. Patients were then divided into a cognitive and non-cognitive decline group for each neuropsychological test and compared regarding demographic and surgical characteristics.
One year postoperatively, significant declines were found in verbal fluency, Stroop Color-Word test and Trail Making Test B (TMT-B). Only changes in TMT-B were associated with the coronal entry point in the right hemisphere.

The interaction with oral epithelial cells and the activation of trigeminal chemoreceptors and mechanoreceptors also shed light on some of the phenolic astringency mechanisms, which complement the insufficient mechanism of interaction with salivary proteins. Since phenolic compounds with different types and structures show different astringency thresholds in a certain regularity, there might be some relationships between the phenolic structures and perceived astringency. On the other hand, novel approaches to reducing the unfavorable perception of phenolic astringency have been increasingly emerging; however, the according summary is still sparse. Therefore, this review aims to (a) illustrate the possible mechanisms of astringency elicited by phenolic compounds, (b) reveal the possible relationships between phenolic structures and perception of astringency, and (c) summarize the emerging mitigation approaches to astringency triggered by phenolic compounds. The primary end points were fatal/nonfatal cardiac events myocardial infarction, sudden death, and hospitalization for heart failure. The maximum P-wave duration (Pmax) from the 12 leads was selected for analysis. The authors compared four prolonged P-wave cutoffs (Pmax = 120, 130, 140, 150 ms) and cardiac events. LA diameter and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) were significantly associated with Pmax (r = 0.08, P = .02 and r = 0.17, P less then .001, respectively). There has been a push to diversify integrated pest management (IPM) programs away from exclusive fumigant use in food facilities. Residual insecticides increasingly have been included among plans. In stored products, sublethal toxicity has been neglected in favor of evaluating direct mortality. Here, we evaluated the movement of Tribolium castaneum, Rhyzopertha dominica, Sitophilus oryzae and Sitophilus zeamais in response to aged residues of an existing (Diacon IGR+® with 11.4% methoprene + 4.75% deltamethrin) and novel (Gravista® with 2.85% methoprene + 1.2% deltamethrin + 33.3% piperonyl butoxide synergist) residual insecticide.
Using the maximum labeled rate and two exposure times for each species, we assessed distance moved and velocity on wheat, rice and corn. Assessments were made from commodity residues aged between 0 and 12 months (at 3-month intervals). We found that after exposure, movement was reduced by 50-88% and equally by adults exposed to each insecticide formulation compared to untreated2020. In this study, substrate-filled capillary electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was developed as an ideal model to investigate the separation mechanism using over thirty small molecules (neutral, basic, and weakly acidic) as model compounds with C18-bonded silica gel and silica gel as the substrates. The chromatographic effect was validated by the negative t-value of oil-water distribution coefficient, and the electric field effect was verified by the paired t-test (p less then 0.01) between the retention times at 5.5 and 4.0 kV. A differential equation was proposed to quantify the compound retention under electric field. The quantitative method was validated to rapidly quantify proline (31.88 μg/mL) and hydroxyproline (20.71 μg/mL) in plasma with acceptable selectivity and accuracy. In conclusion, the separation mechanism of solid-substrate electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was the combination of the chromatographic and electric field effects, which could provide theoretical guidance for the separation optimization, and also promote its applications in biological, pharmaceutical, forensic, food and environmental analyses, etc.
