In this update, greater stress is laid on the population approach, and especially on the promotion of physical activity and healthy diet through dietary, leisure and active transport policies in Spain. To estimate vascular risk, note should be made of the importance of recalibrating the tables used, by adapting them to population shifts in the prevalence of risk factors and incidence of vascular diseases, with particular attention to the role of chronic kidney disease. At an individual level, the key element is personalised support for changes in behaviour, adherence to medication in high-risk individuals and patients with vascular disease, the fostering of physical activity, and cessation of smoking habit. Furthermore, recent clinical trials with PCSK9 inhibitors are reviewed, along with the need to simplify pharmacological treatment of arterial hypertension to improve control and adherence to treatment. In the case of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and vascular disease or high vascular disease risk, when lifestyle changes and metformin are inadequate, the use of drugs with proven vascular benefit should be prioritised. Lastly, guidelines on peripheral arterial disease and other specific diseases are included, as is a recommendation against prescribing antiaggregants in primary prevention.Newborn screening (NBS) identifies infants at risk for congenital disorders for which early intervention has been shown to improve outcomes (1). During 2015-2017, the overall prevalence was 34.0 per 10,000 live births. Applying that frequency to 3,791,712 live births in 2018,† approximately 12,900 infants are expected to be identified each year with one of the disorders included in the study. Energy infrastructures can have negative impacts on the environment. In remote and / or sparsely populated as well as in conflict-prone regions, these can be difficult to assess, in particular when they are of a large scale. Analyzing land use and land cover changes can be an important initial step towards establishing the quantity and quality of impacts. Drawing from very-high-resolution-multi-temporal-satellite-imagery, this paper reports on a study which employed the Random Forest Classifier and Land Change Modeler to derive detailed information of the spatial patterns and temporal variations of land-use and land-cover changes resulting from the China-Myanmar Oil and Gas Pipelines in Ann township in Myanmar's Rakhine State of Myanmar. Deforestation and afforestation conversion processes during pre- and post-construction periods (2010 to 2012) are compared. Whilst substantial forest areas were lost along the pipelines, this is only part of the story, as afforestation has also happened in parallel. However, afforestation areas can be of a lower value, and in order to be able to take quality of forests into account, it is of crucial importance to accompany satellite-imagery based techniques with field observation. Here, we describe the role of ethanol in mixed-species co-cultures by dual-seq analyses. P. aeruginosa and C. albicans transcriptomes were assessed after growth in mono-culture or co-culture with either ethanol-producing C. albicans or a C. albicans mutant lacking the primary ethanol dehydrogenase, Adh1. Analysis of the RNA-Seq data using KEGG pathway enrichment and eADAGE methods revealed several P. aeruginosa responses to C. albicans-produced ethanol including the induction of a non-canonical low-phosphate response regulated by PhoB. C. albicans wild type, but not C. albicans adh1Δ/Δ, induces P. aeruginosa production of 5-methyl-phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (5-****), which forms a red derivative within fungal cells and exhibits antifungal activity. Here, we show that C. albicans adh1Δ/Δ no longer activates P. aeruginosa PhoB and PhoB-regulated phosphatase activity, that exogenous ethanol complements this defect, and that ethanol is sufficient to activate PhoB in single-species P. aeruginosa cultures at permissive phosphate levels. The intersection of ethanol and phosphate in co-culture is inversely reflected in C. albicans; C. albicans adh1Δ/Δ had increased expression of genes regulated by Pho4, the C. albicans transcription factor that responds to low phosphate, and Pho4-dependent phosphatase activity. Together, these results show that C. albicans-produced ethanol stimulates P. aeruginosa PhoB activity and 5-****-mediated antagonism, and that both responses are dependent on local phosphate concentrations. Further, our data suggest that phosphate scavenging by one species improves phosphate access for the other, thus highlighting the complex dynamics at play in microbial communities.
Dental offices are among the highest risk for transmission of the COVID-19, having the potential to transmit the virus via routine dental procedures. This cross-sectional study assessed the preparedness and perception of infection control measures against the COVID-19 pandemic by dentists in Saudi Arabia.
This online survey addressed the impact and perception of the COVID-19 pandemic on dental practice in Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire comprised 26 closed-ended questions. The Black population in the US is heterogeneous but is often treated as monolithic in research, with skin pigmentation being the primary indicator of racial classification. Objective This paper examines the differences among Blacks by comparing genetic ancestry, skin color and social attainment of 259 residents across four US cities-Norman, Oklahoma; Cincinnati, Ohio; Harlem, New York; and Washington, District of Columbia.
Participants were recruited between 2004 and 2006 at community-based forums. Cross-sectional data were analyzed using chi-square tests, correlation analyses and logistic regression.
There were variations in ancestry, melanin index and social attainment across some cities. Overall, men with darker skin color, and women with lighter skin color were significantly more likely to be married. Darker skin individuals with significantly more West African ancestry reported attainment of graduate degrees, and professional occupations than lighter skin individuals.
Our findings suggest differences in skin pigmentation by geography and support regional variations in ancestry of US Blacks. Biomedical research should consider genetic ancestry and local historical/social context rather than relying solely on skin pigmentation as a proxy for race.

Bullying is an emerging risk factor for poor mental health outcomes adversely affecting children and adolescents. However, it has rarely caught the attention of the health and education sector due to lack of evidence in many countries including Nepal. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with bullying behavior among adolescent students in Nepal.
We used nationally representative data from the Nepal Global School-Based Student Health Survey that involved two-stage cluster sampling design with the use of a standard set of self-administered questionnaires. Complex sample analysis was done to determine the prevalence and correlates of bullying among 6529 students of 68 schools studying in grade 7 to 11 using descriptive analysis and multivariable logistic regression.

This study consists of three parts. The first part is a systematic online search of low-sodium salts. The authors will use the advanced search functions of search engines and online shopping sites to execute the search. The second part is a systematic review of academic literature on the use of low-sodium salts. A meta-analysis will be performed to quantify the effectiveness of low-sodium salt interventions. The third part is key informant interviews to understand the challenges of implementing low-sodium salt interventions. Key informants will include policymakers, academic researchers, and salt industry representatives. The list of key informants will be generated through purposive sampling and snowball sampling based on the completed online search and the systematic review. The interview guides will be developed based on the RE-AIM (Reach, Effective, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance) framework. Seventy-eight patients with suspicious lesions of ****were enrolled in this study. Only patients for whom histologic evaluation confirmed diagnosis of BCC (70) continued the study. The dermatoscopic and ultrasonographic observation started before the treatment. Three control examinations were performed 4, 12 and 24 weeks after the treatment.
A total of 70 basal cell carcinomas were examined in this study. The presence of cancer formation was observed in the margins of removed nodular ****in 15% (6/40), in another 25% of cases the margin of surgical removal was narrow and was < 0.2 cm (10/40). For 4 of 6 (66%) lesions, in which histopathological examination demonstrated a positive margin, hypo oring of patients after surgery can accelerate and improve the diagnosis of residual disease.
Isotretinoin (13-
retinoid) is asynthetic retinoid. It was approved by the FDA in 1982 for use of oral isotretinoin in severe acne. It is also used in moderate-severe acne that does not respond to conventional treatments. Isotretinoin is the only available drug that affects all stages of acne pathogenesis.
To prospectively investigate whether there is an effect of isotretinoin therapy on auditory function and, if so, to demonstrate its association with simultaneous blood lipid levels.
Thirty patients (60 ears) with acne vulgaris, who received 0.5 mg/kg of isotretinoin therapy, were included in the study. Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and pure tone audiometry tests were performed to evaluate auditory function at the beginning of the procedure and the 6
month of treatment. In addition, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoproteins (HDL) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) cholesterol levels were recorded.
There was no statistically significant difference between pre-treatment and post-treatment mean pure tone audiometry threshold and DPOAE values; however, the increase in total blood cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL levels and the decrease in HDL levels were statistically significant.

Our study goal was verification of shear-wave elastography (SWE) as an assessment tool enabling quantitative analysis of facial fat tissue elasticity, using the example of the deep medial cheek fat compartment (DMCFC), due to its major role in pseudoptosis etiology.
Furthermore, we determined the age-specific reference values for DMCFC elasticity and analyzed its correlation with body mass index (BMI) and DMCFC thickness.
The study included 89 female patients (age 18-63 years, mean 45.9 ±14.2 years) with intact facial skin. Prior to the procedure, all participants were subjected to SWE of the DMCFC. Reference ranges for elastographic parameters were defined as ± 2 standard deviations (SD), or estimated by means of ROC analysis.
The DMCFC elasticity correlated inversely with DMCFC thickness (
= -0.292,

To evaluate usefulness of high-frequency ultrasound in monitoring patients with BCC, particularly to detect residual disease or early recurrence. Seventy-eight patients with suspicious lesions of BCC were enrolled in this study. Only patients for whom histologic evaluation confirmed diagnosis of BCC (70) continued the study. The dermatoscopic and ultrasonographic observation started before the treatment. Three control examinations were performed 4, 12 and 24 weeks after the treatment. A total of 70 basal cell carcinomas were examined in this study. The presence of cancer formation was observed in the margins of removed nodular BCC in 15% (6/40), in another 25% of cases the margin of surgical removal was narrow and was < 0.2 cm (10/40). To prospectively investigate whether there is an effect of isotretinoin therapy on auditory function and, if so, to demonstrate its association with simultaneous blood lipid levels. Thirty patients (60 ears) with acne vulgaris, who received 0.5 mg/kg of isotretinoin therapy, were included in the study. Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and pure tone audiometry tests were performed to evaluate auditory function at the beginning of the procedure and the 6 month of treatment. In addition, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoproteins (HDL) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) cholesterol levels were recorded. There was no statistically significant difference between pre-treatment and post-treatment mean pure tone audiometry threshold and DPOAE values; however, the increase in total blood cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL levels and the decrease in HDL levels were statistically significant. Our study goal was verification of shear-wave elastography (SWE) as an assessment tool enabling quantitative analysis of facial fat tissue elasticity, using the example of the deep medial cheek fat compartment (DMCFC), due to its major role in pseudoptosis etiology. Furthermore, we determined the age-specific reference values for DMCFC elasticity and analyzed its correlation with body mass index (BMI) and DMCFC thickness. The study included 89 female patients (age 18-63 years, mean 45.9 ±14.2 years) with intact facial skin. Prior to the procedure, all participants were subjected to SWE of the DMCFC. Reference ranges for elastographic parameters were defined as ± 2 standard deviations (SD), or estimated by means of ROC analysis. The DMCFC elasticity correlated inversely with DMCFC thickness ( = -0.292, < 0.001), age ( = -0.838, < 0.001) and BMI of the study subjects ( = -0.258, = 0.001). The C═O and N-C bonds in Kevlar were broken, and the remaining carbon atoms were reorganized into graphene, which can be ascribed to a photothermal effect induced by the laser irradiation. Proof-of-concept devices based on the prepared graphene/Kevlar textile, including flexible Zn-air batteries, electrocardiogram electrodes, and NO2 sensors, were demonstrated. Further, we fabricated self-powered and intelligent protective clothing based on the graphene/Kevlar textile. The laser-induced direct writing of graphene from commercial textiles in air conditions provides a versatile and rapid route for the fabrication of textile electronics.In this study, a simple microfluidic method, which can be universally applied to different rigid or flexible substrates, was developed to fabricate high-resolution, conductive, two-dimensional and three-dimensional microstructured graphene-based electronic circuits. Propensity-score matching is a popular analytic method to estimate the effects of treatments when using observational data. Matching on the propensity score typically requires a pool of potential controls that is larger than the number of treated or exposed subjects. The most common approach to matching on the propensity score is matching without replacement, in which each control subject is matched to at most one treated subject. Failure to find a matched control for each treated subject can lead to "bias due to incomplete matching." To avoid this bias, it is important to identify a matched control subject for each treated subject. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of oral tranexamic acid in combination with hydroquinone cream in the treatment of melasma. METHODS Subjects with moderate-to-severe melasma were enrolled. Group A received hydroquinone 4% cream, sunscreen and oral tranexamic acid, while Group B received hydroquinone 4% cream, sunscreen and placebo capsules for 3 months. All subjects had an additional 3-month follow-up visit on sunscreen alone. The primary outcome measure was change in modified Melasma Area and Severity Index (mMASI) score. In addition, the melanin index was measured using a mexameter. RESULTS Fifty subjects were enrolled, and all completed the study. There was a 55% reduction in mMASI after 3 months from mean 8.96 (SD 2.45) to 4.0 (SD 1.6) in Group A compared to 10.9% from mean 8.53 (SD 2.04) to 7.6 (SD 2.0) in Group B. Three months after oral and topical therapy was discontinued, there was a 42% decrease in mMASI compared to baseline in Group A (mean 5.1 SD 1.7) vs. 4.7% in Group B (mean 8.1 SD 2.0). No serious adverse events were observed. CONCLUSIONS A combination of oral tranexamic acid and topical hydroquinone is more effective than hydroquinone alone in the treatment of melasma. © 2020 The Australasian College of Dermatologists.AIM To evaluate clinical and biochemical effects of adjunctive systemic folic acid (FA) intake with scaling and root planing (SRP) in periodontitis treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty periodontitis subjects (30 per group) were randomly assigned into study groups and treated with either SRP + placebo (SRP + P) or SRP + folic acid (SRP + F). In addition to clinical parameters (plaque index [PI], gingival index [GI], probing pocket depth [PPD], clinical attachment level Cal Culator and gingival recession [GR]), gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) samples were obtained at baseline and post-treatment (PT) periods (one (PT-1), three (PT-3) and six (PT-6) months) for C-reactive protein (CRP) and homocysteine (Hcy) evaluation. RESULTS Significant time-dependent reduction was detected at all clinical parameters for both groups (p less then .001). Compared to SRP + P, CAL was lower in SRP + F at PT-1 (p = .004) and PT-3 (p = .035), whereas GR was lower at only PT-1 (p = .015). GCF volume and CRP did not show inter-group differences, whereas Hcy was higher in SRP + F at PT-3 (p = .044) and PT-6 (p = .041). GCF volume and Hcy showed reduction after treatment in both groups (p less then .001). CONCLUSION Both modalities exhibited clinical improvement and change in biochemical parameters. Adjunctive systemic FA intake may be recommended adjunctive to periodontitis treatment to reveal better outcomes. Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.OBJECTIVES Antibiotic prescribing in paediatric care is highly prevalent, and quite often, children are prescribed for conditions, like upper respiratory tract infections, which are self-limiting and viral in aetiology. The purpose of this study was to identify potential new targets for provincial antimicrobial stewardship efforts. METHODS Antibiotic prescription data for children were extracted from a provincial prescription database, linked to physician billing data in order to obtain diagnostic information, and then combined with demographic data in order to obtain patient age, sex and geographic location. Prescription rates were calculated, and trends were examined by major anatomical therapeutic chemical (ATC) classification. RESULTS Our cohort included an average of 271,134 children per year and 1,767,652 antibiotic prescriptions. Antibiotic utilization increased 4.5% (from 453 to 474 prescriptions per 1000 population). The greatest increases in prescribing were seen in children aged 0-2 years. Increased indication-specific rates of prescribing were observed in children aged 0-2 years, across every category. Although antibiotic use for upper respiratory tract infections decreased, prescribing rates remain as high as 5 times more than other indications. CONCLUSION Past studies have widely illustrated decreasing or static rates of prescribing in British Columbia. However, these results signal a potential problem in the sphere of paediatric antibiotic prescribing, wherein rates have been increasing since 2013. Despite the success of provincial efforts in reducing the use of broad-spectrum penicillins, marked surges in the use of classes like tetracyclines, quinolones and other antibacterials identify a new potential target for provincial stewardship.

In addition to clinical parameters (plaque index [PI], gingival index [GI], probing pocket depth [PPD], clinical attachment level [CAL] and gingival recession [GR]), gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) samples were obtained at baseline and post-treatment (PT) periods (one (PT-1), three (PT-3) and six (PT-6) months) for C-reactive protein (CRP) and homocysteine (Hcy) evaluation. RESULTS Significant time-dependent reduction was detected at all clinical parameters for both groups (p less then .001). Compared to SRP + P, CAL was lower in SRP + F at PT-1 (p = .004) and PT-3 (p = .035), whereas GR was lower at only PT-1 (p = .015). Adjunctive systemic FA intake may be recommended adjunctive to periodontitis treatment to reveal better outcomes. METHODS Antibiotic prescription data for children were extracted from a provincial prescription database, linked to physician billing data in order to obtain diagnostic information, and then combined with demographic data in order to obtain patient age, sex and geographic location. Prescription rates were calculated, and trends were examined by major anatomical therapeutic chemical (ATC) classification. RESULTS Our cohort included an average of 271,134 children per year and 1,767,652 antibiotic prescriptions. Antibiotic utilization increased 4.5% (from 453 to 474 prescriptions per 1000 population). The greatest increases in prescribing were seen in children aged 0-2 years. Increased indication-specific rates of prescribing were observed in children aged 0-2 years, across every category. Although antibiotic use for upper respiratory tract infections decreased, prescribing rates remain as high as 5 times more than other indications. CONCLUSION Past studies have widely illustrated decreasing or static rates of prescribing in British Columbia. However, these results signal a potential problem in the sphere of paediatric antibiotic prescribing, wherein rates have been increasing since 2013. A first descriptive analysis, using bibliometric indexes, permitted to identify keywords strongly related to the study scopes. Modelling studies were focused on particular infectious amodelling frameworks, from within-host to spatio-temporal models, is clearly on the way. This would allow to capture the complexity of individual biological variabilities and to assess their consequences on the whole system at the population level. This would offer the opportunity to test and evaluate in silico the efficiency of possible control measures targeting specific epidemiological units, from hosts to herds, either individually or through their contact networks. In multiple sclerosis (MS), clinical assessment, MRI and cerebrospinal fluid are important in the diagnostic process. However, no blood biomarker has been confirmed as a useful tool in the diagnostic work-up.
Blood platelets contain a rich spliced mRNA repertoire that can alter during megakaryocyte development but also during platelet formation and platelet circulation. In this proof of concept study, we evaluate the diagnostic potential of spliced blood platelet RNA for the detection of MS.
We isolated and sequenced platelet RNA of blood samples obtained from 57 MS patients and 66 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (HCs). 60% was used to develop a particle swarm-optimized (PSO) support vector machine classification algorithm. The remaining 40% served as an independent validation series.
In total, 1249 RNAs with differential spliced junction expression levels were identified between platelets of MS patients as compared to HCs, including EPSTI1, IFI6, and RPS6KA3, in line with reported inflammatory signatures in the blood of MS patients. The RNAs were subsequently used as input for a MS classifier, capable of detecting MS with 80% accuracy in the independent validation series.

Thus, we investigated whether individual differences in behavioral expressions of pattern separation and pattern completion were correlated after accounting for general mnemonic ability. Young adult participants learned events comprised of a scene-animal-object triad. In the pattern separation task, we estimated mnemonic discrimination using lure classification for events that contained a similar lure element. In the pattern completion task, we estimated holistic recollection using dependency in retrieval success for different associations from the same event. Although overall accuracies for the two tasks correlated as expected, specific measures of individual variation in holistic retrieval and mnemonic discrimination did not correlate, suggesting that these two processes involve distinguishable properties of episodic memory.Music training has repeatedly been claimed to positively impact children's cognitive skills and academic achievement (literacy and mathematics).
