  • Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by chronic inflammation and lung tissue deterioration. Given the high vascularity of the lung, von Willebrand factor (VWF), a central component of wound healing initiation, has previously been assessed in COPD. VWF processing, which is crucial for regulating the primary response of wound healing, has not been assessed directly. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize wound healing initiation in COPD using dynamic VWF-processing biomarkers and to evaluate how these relate to disease severity and mortality. Methods A cross-sectional analysis of plasma samples from the ECLIPSE study collected at year 1 from moderate to very severe COPD subjects (GOLD 2-4, n=984) was performed. We applied competitive neo-epitope ELISAs specifically targeting the formation of and ADAMTS13-processed form of VWF, VWF-N and VWF-A, respectively. Results VWF-A and VWF-N were significantly increased (VWF-N, p=0.01; VWF-A, p=0.0001) in plasma of symptomatic (mMRC score ≥2) compared to asymptomatic/mild symptomatic COPD subjects. Increased VWF-N and VWF-A levels were specifically associated with emphysema (VWF-N, p less then 0.0001) or prior exacerbations (VWF-A, p=0.01). When dichotomized, high levels of both biomarkers were associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality (VWF-N, HR 3.5; VWF-A, HR 2.64). Conclusion We demonstrate that changes in VWF processing were related to different pathophysiological aspects of COPD. VWF-N relates to the chronic condition of emphysema, while VWF-A was associated with the more acute events of exacerbations. HRQoL was assessed at inclusion (baseline) and at 1, 6 and 12 months employing EuroQol-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) and ****-36 for general HRQoL, and Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ) and St. Georges Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) for disease-specific HRQoL. Healthcare contacts, hospitalizations, as-needed medications, prescription changes and healthcare costs were registered. Results Ninety-four patients were enrolled of which 53 subjects completed the 12-month study period. Compared to baseline, most domains of ****-36 were improved significantly at 1 time-point or more. The low physical activity criterion of the frailty phenotype was determined by using five different questionnaires and an accelerometer, and three different cut-point models. Results In 47 participants, frailty phenotype prevalence varied between 14.9% and 31.9%, depending on the model used to assess physical activity. Conclusion The method of physical activity assessment and the choice of cut-points for low physical activity considerably impact frailty phenotype prevalence. More efforts to standardize and adhere to the low physical activity criterion seem warranted. The calculation of correction factors between commonly used sets of low physical activity criteria might allow better comparisons of published prevalence rates. © 2020 Ziller et al.

This study revealed the effects of fermented (black tea) and non-fermented tea (green tea) on liver cancer cells, providing a basis for the investigation of tea extracts for their anti-tumour potential. BACKGROUND MicroRNA-155-5p (miR-155-5p) has been reported to play an oncogenic role in different human malignancies; however, its role in Wilms tumor (WT) remains unclear. METHODS Differentially expressed miRNAs (DE-miRNAs) and mRNAs (DEGs) in WT blood and tissues were identified by using miRNA microarray and RNA-sequencing. Bioinformatics prediction and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses were used to predict the potential functions of DE-miRNAs. DE-miRNAs and DEGs in WT obtained from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and Therapeutically Applicable Research to Generate Effective Treatments (TARGET) were identified by using the "edgeR" package. RT-qPCR was used to explore miR-155-5p and IGF2 expression and their clinical significance in WT specimens. A rhabdoid cell line (G401) and Ewing sarcoma cell line (SK-NEP-1) were used. Immunohistochemical staining, western blotting and dual-luciferase reporter assays were performed to study the mechanisms involved. The CCK-8, flow cytometry, ssed cell proliferation, migration and invasion and induced cell apoptosis. Moreover, the tumor-suppressing effects of miR-155-5p in cells were abrogated by miR-155-5p inhibitor treatment. CONCLUSIONS Taken together, these findings suggest that miR-155-5p functions as a tumor suppressor in WT through inactivating the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway by directly targeting IGF2. Thus, miR-155-5p might be a novel therapeutic target for WT. P2X7R is an ATP ligand-gated cationic channel receptor, which exists in most tissues of the human body. The main function of P2X7R is to regulate the relevant cells (such as macrophages, lymphocytes, and glial cells) to release damaging factors and induce apoptosis and cell death. In recent years, with continuous research and exploration of P2X7R, it has been found that P2X7R exists on the surface of most tumor cells andored the pharmacological properties of P2X7R antagonists or inhibitors in reducing its expression as targeted therapy for tumors. It can also bring crystals that are slightly deviated from a zone axis to the exact zone with the help of Laue ring in the diffraction pattern. This program has been successfully applied to studies of zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), known as being electron-beam sensitive. The program shows its power not only in saving the operator's time but also in preventing the crystals from quick beam damages. As part of the type I IFN signaling, the 2'-5'- oligoadenylate synthetase (OAS) proteins have been involved in the progression of several non-viral diseases. Notably, OAS has been correlated with immune-modulatory functions that promote chronic inflammatory conditions, autoimmune disorders, cancer, and infectious diseases. In spite of this, OAS enzymes have been ignored as drug targets, and to date, there are no reports of compounds that can inhibit their activity. The median lethal concentration obtained for CPF was higher (LC50 = 1.34 μg/L) than for the combination with MP (LC50 = 0.37 μg/L), or CPF-loaded MP (LC50 = 0.26 μg/L). Significant effects were also observed for feeding and egg production (EC50 = 0.77 and 1.07 μg/L for CPF, 0.03 and 0.05 μg/L for CPF combined with MP, 0.18 and 0.20 μg/L for CPF-loaded MP). No significant effects were observed in the exposure to 'virgin' MP. Statistical analysis was conducted using Microsoft Excel Version 15.33. RESULTS Seventeen patients underwent left-sided anastomotic reconstruction using the ECP stapler. All donuts (proximal and distal) were intact. Anastomotic integrity was evaluated using the air-leak test utilizing flexible video sigmoidoscopy. No leaks were observed, although one patient (5.9%) developed a postoperative pelvic abscess. The anonymous survey was completed by all four surgeons. Subjective evaluation of the ECP stapler suggests that the overall stapling quality, overall device ease-of-use, and the overall perception of anastomotic quality as above average when compared to manual 'end-to-end anastomosis' (EEA) stapling devices. CONCLUSIONS In an initial clinical evaluation of the ECP stapler, the safety and ease-of-use of the device appears to be satisfactory. Powered stapling and the design of '3D stapling' may provide advantages over manual systems, and may improve the construction quality of left-sided colorectal anastomosis.In recent years, use of cocaine and amphetamines and deaths associated with stimulants have been on the rise, and there are still no FDA-approved medications for stimulant use disorders. One contributing factor may involve heterogeneity. At the neurobiological level, dual dopamine dysfunction may be undermining medication efficacy, suggesting a need for combination pharmacotherapies. At the population level, individual variability is expressed in a number of ways and, if left unaddressed, may interfere with medication efficacy. This chapter reviews studies investigating medications to address dopamine dysfunction, and it also identifies several prominent heterogeneities associated with stimulant (and other substance) use disorders. The chapter has implications for improving interventions to treat stimulant use disorders, and the theme of individual heterogeneity may have broader application across substance use disorders.

We report on our experience building Tableau-based visualizations and integrating them into our EHR system. MATERIALS AND METHODS Visual analytic tools were created as part of 12 clinician-initiated quality improvement projects. We built the visual analytic tools in Tableau and linked it within our EPIC environment. We identified 5 visual themes that spanned the various projects. To illustrate these themes, we choose 1 exemplary project which aimed to improve obstetric operating room efficiency. RESULTS Across our 12 projects, we identified 5 visual themes that are integral to project success scheduling & optimization (in 11/12 projects); provider assessment (10/12); executive assessment (8/12); patient outcomes (7/12); and control and goal charts (2/12). DISCUSSION Many visualizations share common themes. Identification of these themes has allowed our internal team to be more efficient and directed in developing visualizations for future projects. CONCLUSION Organizing visual analytics into themes can allow informatics teams to more efficiently provide visual products to clinical collaborators. © The Author(s) 2020. RESULTS One hundred and seventy-three ESBL-producing meropenem-susceptible Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were selected for testing. A total of 519 bacteria/carbapenem combinations were screened by disc diffusion; 84 combinations were identified as cHR. Using a rotating cylinder defined by horizontally moving Gabor patches, we produced a spontaneous Pulfrich phenomenon in order to determine the interocular delays, that is, the interocular phase difference at which ambiguous motion in plane was perceived. Two spatial frequencies-a low (0.95 cycles/degree [c/d]) and a medium (2.85 c/d) spatial frequency-were tested. Results The absolute interocular delays of the amblyopic group was significantly longer than that of the controls at both low or medium spatial frequencies (P less then 0.01). However, the interocular delays was not always in favor of the fellow eye 35% of the amblyopes (7/20) showed a faster processing of the amblyopic eye than that of the fellow eye at 0.95 c/d and 29.5% (5/17) at 2.85 c/d. No significant correlation was found between interocular delays and the clinical characteristics (e.g., age, treatment history, stereoacuity, and magnitude of anisometropia) in this amblyopic cohort. Conclusions The interocular delays in amblyopes with stereopsis might result from either a faster or slower processing of the amblyopic eye relative to the fellow eye. This work provides important additional information for binocular processing of dynamic visual stimuli in amblyopia. Eyes were examined three times with intervals of 1 year. Thickness of the full retina and layer-by-layer measurements were used to identify edema or neurodegeneration. OCTA vessel density maps of the retina were used to identify capillary dropout. Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) classification was performed using the seven-field ETDRS protocol. Results A total of 62 eyes from 62 patients with diabetes were followed for 2 years. After verification for image quality, a total of 44 eyes from 44 patients (30% women) aged 52 to 80 years were retained for data analysis. There were 18 eyes with ETDRS grades 10 to 20, 17 eyes with ETDRS grade 35, and 9 eyes with ETDRS grades 43 to 47. During the 2-year follow-up period, there was a progressive increase in capillary dropout, whereas edema and neurodegeneration remained stable.   • Remdesivir, originally develop as a treatment for Ebola virus disease and Marburg virus infections, is being studied for it effectiveness against 2019-nCoV infection. Many other antiviral agents and vaccines are being tested but most of them are in phase I or II and hence unlikely to be of any benefit immediately with regards to current outbreak. Hence, the standard infection control techniques and preventive steps for healthy individuals and supportive care for the confirmed cases is the best available strategy to deal with current viral outbreak. .The currently available antipsychotics mostly treat the positive symptoms of schizophrenia and have at least one adverse effect as a potential liability. Encouraging data suggest potential efficacy for a variety of new agents for the treatment of total symptoms and/or specific symptom domains of schizophrenia. Mechanisms of action that are under investigation include dopamine D3 antagonism/serotonin 5-HT1A partial agonism; combined dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate modulation; phosphodiesterase 10A inhibition; trace amine-associated receptor-1 (TAAR1) agonism plus 5-HT1A agonism; 5-HT2A inverse agonism; sigma-2/5-HT2A antagonism; D-amino acid oxidase (DAAO) inhibition; glycine transporter-1 inhibition; vesicular monoamine transporter-2 antagonism; mu opioid antagonism added to olanzapine; and novel long-acting injectable antipsychotic formulations. It is hoped that ongoing and recently completed trials for agents with known and/or novel mechanisms of action will lead to approved treatments that effectively target the various symptom domains of schizophrenia, minimize the risk for a broad range of clinically relevant adverse effects, and improve functional outcomes for patients. METHODS This phase 3, double-blind, placebo-controlled study (conducted between October 2016 and July 2017) included Japanese patients aged ≥ 18 years with ADHD (DSM-5). Patients received GXR (n = 101) or placebo (n = 100) titrated from 2 mg/d to 4-6 mg/d (dose-optimization; 5 weeks), followed by 4-6 mg/d (dose-maintenance; 5 weeks), then tapered doses to 2 mg/d (2 weeks). Primary endpoint was change from baseline in total score on the Japanese version of the ADHD-Rating Scale IV with adult prompts (ADHD-RS-IV) at week 10. Other measures were ADHD-RS-IV subscales, Clinical Global Impression-Improvement scale (CGI-I) and Patient Global Impression-Improvement scale (PGI-I) (percentage of patients very **** improved/**** improved), treatment-emergent adverse event (TEAE) incidences, and TEAEs leading to discontinuation. RESULTS Compared with placebo, there was statistically significantly greater improvement in ADHD-RS-IV total score reduction with GXR (least squares mean ± SE GXR vs placebo, -11.55 ± 1.10 vs -7.27 ± 1.07; P = .0005; effect size 0.52). There were significantly greater improvements in GXR for ADHD-RS-IV inattention (-7.39 ± 0.79 vs -4.89 ± 0.76; P = .0032) and hyperactivity-impulsivity (-3.84 ± 0.54 vs -2.10 ± 0.52; P = .0021) subscale scores, CGI-I scores (48.1% vs 22.6%; P = .0007), and PGI-I scores (25.3% vs 11.8%; P = .0283). More patients in the GXR versus the placebo group reported TEAEs (81.2% vs 62.0%) and discontinued due to TEAEs (19.8% vs 3.0%). The main TEAEs in the GXR group were somnolence, thirst, blood pressure decrease, nasopharyngitis, postural dizziness, and constipation; most TEAEs were mild to moderate in severity. CONCLUSIONS In Japanese adults with ADHD, GXR improved ADHD symptoms without any major safety concerns.     Remdesivir, originally develop as a treatment for Ebola virus disease and Marburg virus infections, is being studied for it effectiveness against 2019-nCoV infection. Many other antiviral agents and vaccines are being tested but most of them are in phase I or II and hence unlikely to be of any benefit immediately with regards to current outbreak. Hence, the standard infection control techniques and preventive steps for healthy individuals and supportive care for the confirmed cases is the best available strategy to deal with current viral outbreak. .The currently available antipsychotics mostly treat the positive symptoms of schizophrenia and have at least one adverse effect as a potential liability. Encouraging data suggest potential efficacy for a variety of new agents for the treatment of total symptoms and/or specific symptom domains of schizophrenia. Mechanisms of action that are under investigation include dopamine D3 antagonism/serotonin 5-HT1A partial agonism; combined dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate modulation; phosphodiesterase 10A inhibition; trace amine-associated receptor-1 (TAAR1) agonism plus 5-HT1A agonism; 5-HT2A inverse agonism; sigma-2/5-HT2A antagonism; D-amino acid oxidase (DAAO) inhibition; glycine transporter-1 inhibition; vesicular monoamine transporter-2 antagonism; mu opioid antagonism added to olanzapine; and novel long-acting injectable antipsychotic formulations. It is hoped that ongoing and recently completed trials for agents with known and/or novel mechanisms of action will lead to approved treatments that effectively target the various symptom domains of schizophrenia, minimize the risk for a broad range of clinically relevant adverse effects, and improve functional outcomes for patients. METHODS This phase 3, double-blind, placebo-controlled study (conducted between October 2016 and July 2017) included Japanese patients aged ≥ 18 years with ADHD (DSM-5). Patients received GXR (n = 101) or placebo (n = 100) titrated from 2 mg/d to 4-6 mg/d (dose-optimization; 5 weeks), followed by 4-6 mg/d (dose-maintenance; 5 weeks), then tapered doses to 2 mg/d (2 weeks). Primary endpoint was change from baseline in total score on the Japanese version of the ADHD-Rating Scale IV with adult prompts (ADHD-RS-IV) at week 10. Other measures were ADHD-RS-IV subscales, Clinical Global Impression-Improvement scale (CGI-I) and Patient Global Impression-Improvement scale (PGI-I) (percentage of patients very much improved/much improved), treatment-emergent adverse event (TEAE) incidences, and TEAEs leading to discontinuation. RESULTS Compared with placebo, there was statistically significantly greater improvement in ADHD-RS-IV total score reduction with GXR (least squares mean ± SE GXR vs placebo, -11.55 ± 1.10 vs -7.27 ± 1.07; P = .0005; effect size 0.52). There were significantly greater improvements in GXR for ADHD-RS-IV inattention (-7.39 ± 0.79 vs -4.89 ± 0.76; P = .0032) and hyperactivity-impulsivity (-3.84 ± 0.54 vs -2.10 ± 0.52; P = .0021) subscale scores, CGI-I scores (48.1% vs 22.6%; P = .0007), and PGI-I scores (25.3% vs 11.8%; P = .0283). More patients in the GXR versus the placebo group reported TEAEs (81.2% vs 62.0%) and discontinued due to TEAEs (19.8% vs 3.0%). The main TEAEs in the GXR group were somnolence, thirst, blood pressure decrease, nasopharyngitis, postural dizziness, and constipation; most TEAEs were mild to moderate in severity. However, it is not well understood whether peripheral complement C1q levels are altered in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients. OBJECTIVE This study aimed at assessing serum levels of complement C1q in MDD patients using a cross-sectional, case-control design. Also, the correlations between complement C1q and inflammation and lipid profile in patients with MDD were also assessed. METHODS Serum complement C1q levels were measured by ADVIA 2400 biochemical analyzer in 160 patients with MDD diagnosed using International Classification of Diseases-10 criteria (ICD-10) and were compared with those of 159 healthy controls between January 2017 to May 2019. Then correlation analysis was carried out between the level of serum complement C1q among MDD patients with inflammation and lipid profile. RESULTS Serum complement C1q levels were higher in MDD patients than in controls (P  less then  .0001) and the difference between the two groups was small (r = 0.239 [0.128 to 0.350]). We found that serum complement C1q concentrations was positively correlated with HAMD-24 score (r = 0.234, P = .003) and log hs-CRP (r = 0.334, P  less then  .001). CONCLUSION We found serum complement C1q levels were significantly higher in MDD patients than in controls. METHODS This study is a prospective observational cohort study including patients from 10 urban dialysis centers between 2012 and 2017. Anxiety symptoms were measured using the self-reported questionnaire **** Anxiety Inventory. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to identify symptom dimensions. The association between dimensions and mortality, hospitalization and quality of life was investigated using stepwise cox, poisson and lineair regression models. Multivariable models included demographic, social, laboratory and clinical variables to adjust for possible confounding. RESULTS In total 687 chronic dialysis patients were included. A Somatic and Subjective anxiety dimension were identified. Only Somatic anxiety symptoms showed an association with increased risk of hospitalization and mortality (Rate Ratio 1.73 (1.45-2.06) p = .007 and Hazard Ratio 1.65 (1.15-2.37) p = .007 respectively). These associations were independent from somatic comorbidity. However, to date, little information is available on the phytotoxicity and metabolic responses induced by these chemicals in crops. In this study, we exposed rice (Oryza sative L.) seedlings to 2,3,4,5-tetrachlorobiphenyl (CB-61) and its hydroxylated (4'-OH-CB-61) and methoxylated derivatives (4'-MeO-CB-61) at 0, 10, 50, 100 and 500 μg/L, respectively. After exposure for 14 days, significantly growth inhibition and oxidative damage were observed, among which the toxicities of 4'-OH-CB-61 and 4'-MeO-CB-61 were greater than that of the parent PCBs. Metabolomics analysis indicated that exposure to the three chemicals induced different metabolic responses. 4'-MeO-CB-61 mainly affected the saccharide catabolism, including pyruvate metabolism, the TCA cycle, the transfer of acetyl groups into mitochondria and the Warburg effect, resulting in a greater energy consumption. Moreover, both CB-61 and 4'-OH-CB-61 promoted several amino acid metabolism and fatty acid biosynthesis, thereby alleviating the potential ROS damage. This study for the first time evaluates and reveals the phytotoxicity of OH-PCBs and MeO-PCBs at the metabolic level, which attempts to provide important information for accurately evaluating the environmental risks of PCBs from the perspective of metabolism. AIM To investigate whether exposure to dampness and mold at home and at work induce sleep disturbances and daytime sleepiness among adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS Associations between onset of sleep disturbances and dampness, mold and mold odor at home and at work were investigated in a cohort of 11,318 adults from the population in Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Estonia. The participants answered a questionnaire at baseline and 10 years later, with questions on sleep disturbances, including difficulty initiating sleep (DIS), difficulty maintaining sleep (DMS), early morning awakening (EMA), insomnia symptoms, snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). Multiple logistic regression models were applied to estimate associations adjusting for potential confounders including gender, age, smoking habit at baseline, change of smoking habit from baseline to follow up, BMI at baseline, change of BMI from baseline to follow up, education level at follow up, allergic rhinitis at baseline, doctor diagnosed asthma at baseline and chronic bronchitis at baseline. RESULTS Baseline floor dampness, visible mold and mold odor at home increased onset of DIS, DMS, EMA, insomnia symptoms and snoring during follow up (OR 1.29-1.87). Any sign of dampness at baseline increased onset of DIS (OR 1.28, 95%CI 1.06-1.55), DMS (OR 1.17, 95%CI 1.02-1.34) and insomnia symptoms (OR 1.18, 95%CI 1.03-1.36). Dampness at home during follow up increased onset of DIS, DMS, EMA, insomnia symptoms and EDS (OR 1.17-1.36). Dampness at work during follow up increased onset of DIS, EMA, insomnia symptoms and EDS (OR 1.16-1.34). Combined dampness at home and at work during follow up increased the risk of onset of DIS, DMS, EMA, insomnia symptoms and EDS (OR 1.29-1.74). Choline acetyltransferase+ (ChAT+) lymphocytes have the capacity to biosynthesize and release acetylcholine, the cognate ligand for cholinergic receptors. Acetylcholine-producing T cells relay neural signals in the 'inflammatory reflex' that regulate cytokine release in spleen. **** deficient in acetylcholine-producing T cells have increased blood pressure, show reduced local vasodilatation and viral control in lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection, and display changes in gut microbiota compared with littermates. These observations indicate that ChAT+ lymphocytes play physiologically important roles in regulation of inflammation and anti-microbial defense. However, the full scope and importance of ChAT+ lymphocytes in immunity and vascular biology remains to be elucidated. Here, we review key findings in this emerging area. Two drugs (cefpirome, cefixime) as dual-action inhibitors could self-organize on copper surface forming bio-functional protective film, which effectively prevents copper corrosion in the picking process with an excellent performance on the resistance of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that studied drugs can self-organize on copper surface successfully forming adsorption film to protect copper. The results also indicated that N/S atoms with the lone pair electrons in the drugs donated electrons to the vacant orbital of Cu occupying the active sites of copper surface. Electrochemistry and surface morphology study revealed that the corrosion inhibition efficiency of cefixime was better than cefpirome. Furthermore, adsorption isotherm study suggested that the adsorption was spontaneous chemical and physical adsorption, obeying Langmuir adsorption. A novel strategy is described for preparing pH-sensitive liposomes which releases the encapsulated drug in response to the change in pH of surrounding solution. The liposomes, composed of conventional zwitter-ionic egg yolk lecithin (EL), additionally contains a pH-sensitive "activator" (AMS), a derivative of lithocholic acid with anionic and cationic groups attached to the opposite ends of the steroid core. CS-NPs were obtained by ionotropic gelation method, using the surfactant 77KS, derived from the amino acid lysine, as a pH-sensitive adjuvant. The apoptotic effects on HeLa tumor cells was analyzed by annexin V-FITC quantification using flow cytometry. Likewise, the modulation of the cell cycle and the NP cell uptake rate were assessed by flow cytometry. pH-Responsive NPs augmented DOX cytotoxicity by increasing the number of apoptosis events, thus causing cell cycle arrest in the G2/M or S phase. The apoptotic effects were notably more evident at pH 6.6. Their physicochemical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The release behaviors of Se and Si were investigated in a phosphate-buffered saline (pH = 5.5, 7.4) solution (PBS). The cytocompatibilities of the samples were then assessed using L929 cells. Se nanoparticles were successfully loaded onto the outer and inner surfaces of hierarchical mesoporous silica. The sizes of the Se/MSNs nanoparticles were approximately 120 nm for 5Se/MSNs and 210 nm for 10Se/MSNs. The XRD and XPS results showed that Se mainly existed in the form of Se0 in the samples. The Se/MSNs exhibited stable and sustained release of both Si and Se in PBS solution.

Links between self-injurious behaviors and more permissive gambling attitudes and perceptions and at-risk/problem gambling suggest the need for improved interventions targeting co-occurring self-injurious behaviors and gambling. Stronger relationships between problem-gambling severity and casino and non-strategic gambling among adolescents with self-injurious behaviors suggest adolescents with self-injurious behavior may engage in specific forms of gambling as maladaptive coping strategies to alleviate suffering. Prevention and treatment approaches targeting distress management and improving adaptive coping skills may be important for targeting self-injurious behaviors in adolescents with at-risk/problem gambling. Recent advances in neuroscience and immunology have shown that cholinergic signals are vital in the regulation of inflammation and immunity. Choline acetyltransferase+ (ChAT+) lymphocytes have the capacity to biosynthesize and release acetylcholine, the cognate ligand for cholinergic receptors. Acetylcholine-producing T cells relay neural signals in the 'inflammatory reflex' that regulate cytokine release in spleen. Mice deficient in acetylcholine-producing T cells have increased blood pressure, show reduced local vasodilatation and viral control in lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection, and display changes in gut microbiota compared with littermates. These observations indicate that ChAT+ lymphocytes play physiologically important roles in regulation of inflammation and anti-microbial defense. However, the full scope and importance of ChAT+ lymphocytes in immunity and vascular biology remains to be elucidated. Here, we review key findings in this emerging area. Two drugs (cefpirome, cefixime) as dual-action inhibitors could self-organize on copper surface forming bio-functional protective film, which effectively prevents copper corrosion in the picking process with an excellent performance on the resistance of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that studied drugs can self-organize on copper surface successfully forming adsorption film to protect copper. The results also indicated that N/S atoms with the lone pair electrons in the drugs donated electrons to the vacant orbital of Cu occupying the active sites of copper surface. Electrochemistry and surface morphology study revealed that the corrosion inhibition efficiency of cefixime was better than cefpirome. Furthermore, adsorption isotherm study suggested that the adsorption was spontaneous chemical and physical adsorption, obeying Langmuir adsorption. A novel strategy is described for preparing pH-sensitive liposomes which releases the encapsulated drug in response to the change in pH of surrounding solution. The liposomes, composed of conventional zwitter-ionic egg yolk lecithin (EL), additionally contains a pH-sensitive "activator" (AMS), a derivative of lithocholic acid with anionic and cationic groups attached to the opposite ends of the steroid core. AMS changes its orientation in the liposomal membrane thus adapting to acidity/basicity of the outer solution. The rotation of AMS induces disordering of the membrane and a fast release of the bioactive cargo. Delivery systems responsive to pH variations might allow the exploitation of the various pH gradients within the body, e.g. between healthy and tumor tissue, or between the extracellular space and some cell compartments. In previous studies, we designed doxorubicin-loaded pH-responsive chitosan-tripolyphosphate nanoparticles (DOX-CS-NPs) and also performed an extensive in vitro study evidencing its notable antiproliferative activity against different tumor cells. Here, we focus on the understanding of the mechanisms underlying the improved in vitro antitumor activity of these NPs, using experimental conditions simulating both the physiological environments (pH 7.4) and the extracellular space of tumors (pHe 6.6). CS-NPs were obtained by ionotropic gelation method, using the surfactant 77KS, derived from the amino acid lysine, as a pH-sensitive adjuvant. The apoptotic effects on HeLa tumor cells was analyzed by annexin V-FITC quantification using flow cytometry. Likewise, the modulation of the cell cycle and the NP cell uptake rate were assessed by flow cytometry. pH-Responsive NPs augmented DOX cytotoxicity by increasing the number of apoptosis events, thus causing cell cycle arrest in the G2/M or S phase. The apoptotic effects were notably more evident at pH 6.6. It was also demonstrated that DOX-CS-NPs were internalized by HeLa cells in a greater extent than the non-associated drug, especially at pH 6.6. It was proven that the combined physicochemical and pH-responsive properties of CS-NPs allowed an enhanced DOX cell internalization in a tumor cell model, allowing the entrapped drug to induce greater cell cycle arrest and apoptotic effects. In this work, different concentrations of Se-incorporated mesoporous silica nanospheres (MSNs) (5Se/MSNs and 10Se/MSNs) were successfully synthesized via an in-situ one-pot method. Their physicochemical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The release behaviors of Se and Si were investigated in a phosphate-buffered saline (pH = 5.5, 7.4) solution (PBS). In vitro antibacterial properties of the prepared samples were evaluated with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). The cytocompatibilities of the samples were then assessed using L929 cells. Se nanoparticles were successfully loaded onto the outer and inner surfaces of hierarchical mesoporous silica. The sizes of the Se/MSNs nanoparticles were approximately 120 nm for 5Se/MSNs and 210 nm for 10Se/MSNs. The XRD and XPS results showed that Se mainly existed in the form of Se0 in the samples. The Se/MSNs exhibited stable and sustained release of both Si and Se in PBS solution.
