    In this retrospective observational case series, a total of 109 eyes of 67 patients who underwent V4c TICL implantation (ICL, V4C Staar Surgical, Nidau, Switzerland) between January 2012 and August 2019 were studied with a minimum follow-up period of 6 months (mean 24 months). The main outcome measures were objective and subjective refraction, uncorrected distance visual acuity, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), safety, predictability, adverse events, and postoperative complications.

Postoperatively, SE within ± 0.5 D and ± 1.0 D of attempted correction were achieved in 96.3 (105 eyes) and 100% (109 eyes), respectively. Patients were asked to report three stages of blur, namely Detectable Blur (DB), Bothersome Blur (BB), and Non-resolvable Blur (NB). Blur was created by adding plus lenses (in steps of 0.12D) over their optimal subjective refraction. The blur judgments were made both monocularly and binocularly when looking through a 3 mm artificial pupil at one line above the best-corrected visual acuity.

    A total of 30 participants were included in this study (mean age = 25.5 ± 3.8 (20-36) years; 77% female). The mean binocular preoperative blur of this group was DB = 0.39 ± 0.26D, BB = 0.74 ± 0.28D and NB = 1.04 ± 0.42D.     Prospective multicenter study including patients who had a single SM diagnosed by transvaginal ultrasounds with surgical indication. Office hysteroscopic enucleation of the SM was performed using a 5 mm continuous flow office hysteroscope with a 2.9 mm rod lens optical system and a 5 Fr operative channel. After the SM was released preserving the pseudo capsule using cold instruments, it was left into the uterine cavity. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients without evidence of the myoma at the transvaginal ultrasound performed after 90 days from surgery.

A cumulative statistical analysis reported a preoperative BMI of 43.6 ± 5.0 kg/m2 while BMI at conception was 29.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a potent anti-oxidant with demonstrated efficacy in pre-clinical TBI when administered early after primary injury. Utilizing our clinically relevant mouse model, we hypothesized that NAC administration in a clinically relevant timeframe could improve the brain's resilience to the secondary insult of hypoxemia. NAC or vehicle administered daily starting 2 h prior to hypoxemia (24 h after controlled cortical impact) for 3 doses in male mice reduced short-term axonal injury and hippocampal neuronal loss. Six month behavioral assessments including novel object recognition, socialization, Barnes maze, and fear conditioning did not reveal performance differences between sham controls and injured mice receiving NAC or saline vehicle. At 7 months after injury, NAC administered mice had reduced hippocampal neuronal loss but no reduction in lesion volume.   • To investigate the effects of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion on sublingual microcirculation in critically ill patients.

    Systematic strategy was conducted to search studies that measured sublingual microcirculation before and after transfusion in critically ill patients. This review was reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses Scoping Review Extension.

    The literature search yielded 114 articles. A total of 11 studies met the inclusion criteria. Observational evidence showed diffusive capacity of the microcirculation significantly improved in intraoperative and anemic hematologic patients after transfusion, while the convective parameters significantly improved in traumatic patients. RBC transfusion improved both diffusive and convective microcirculatory parameters in hypovolemic hemorrhagic shock patients. Most of the studies enrolled septic patients showed no microcirculatory improvements after transfusion. The positive effects of the leukoreduction were insufficiently supported. The effects of the storage time of the RBCs were not conclusive. The majority of the evidence supported a negative correlation between baseline proportion of perfused vessels (PPV) and changes in PPV.

We conducted a prospective cohort study in the UK Biobank of 375 693 participants who provided blood samples in 2006 to 2010. Circulating levels of liver function markers (alanine transaminase [ALT], aspartate transaminase [AST], total bilirubin [TBIL], gamma glutamyltransferase [GGT], alkaline phosphatase [ALP], total protein [TP] and albumin [ALB]) were measured. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ide397-gsk-4362676.html Incident cancer cases were identified through linkage to the national cancer registry up to 2019. Repeated biomarker measurements were available from a subset of 11 320 participants who were re-assessed in 2012 to 2013. After a median follow-up of 10.0 years, we documented 2662 cases of CRC. Circulating levels of ALT, AST, TBIL, GGT, TP and ALB at baseline were inversely associated with CRC risk (P  less then  .01), with multivariable hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) comparing decile 10 vs 1 of 0.62 (0.51-0.75), 0.63 (0.53-0.75), 0.85 (0.72-1.02), 0.74 (0.61-0.89), 0.70 (0.59-0.84) and 0.66 (0.55-0.79), respectively. Strengthened associations were found after recalibration for repeated measurements. The associations appeared stronger for proximal colon cancer than distal colon cancer and rectal cancer, but consistent for early-, mid- and late-onset CRC. In a large cohort of general population, the UK Biobank, higher circulating levels of ALT, AST, TBIL, GGT, TP and ALB, largely within the normal range, were associated with a lower risk of CRC. The findings support a link between liver function and CRC, and may spur future research on the gut-microbiota-liver axis.
    It has been reported that serum quantification of anti-HBc (qAnti-HBc) could predict antiviral response in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients, while its role in hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF) remains unclear. Its implication in HBV-ACLF was evaluated in this study.

    Baseline serum qAnti-HBc levels were retrospectively detected in HBV-ACLF and CHB patients using recently developed double-sandwich immunoassay. The association of qAnti-HBc level with clinical outcomes was evaluated by multiple logistic regression. Nomogram was adopted to formulate an algorithm incorporating qAnti-HBc for the prediction of survival in HBV-ACLF. The post-hospitalization of HBV-ACLF patients were followed-up for 1year.

    Eighty-eight HBV-ACLF as training set, 80 HBV-ACLF as validation set and 216 CHB cases were included. Serum qAnti-HBc level was significantly higher in HBV-ACLF (4.95±0.54log
    IU/mL) than CHB patients (4.47±0.84log
    IU/mL) (P<0.01). Among HBV-ACLF cases, both in training and validation set, patients with poor outcomes had lower qAnti-HBc level. Area under receiver operating characteristic curve of the novel qAnti-HBc inclusive model was 0.82, superior to 0.73 from model for end-stage liver disease scores (P=0.018), which was confirmed in validation set. During follow-up, the qAnti-HBc level declined at month 3 and month 6, then plateaued at 3.84log

  • Among various charge-carrier ions for aqueous batteries, non-metal hydronium (H3 O+ ) with small ionic size and fast diffusion kinetics empowers H3 O+ -intercalation electrodes with high rate performance and fast-charging capability. However, pure H3 O+ charge carriers for inorganic electrode materials have only been observed in corrosive acidic electrolytes, rather than in mild neutral electrolytes. Herein, we report how selective H3 O+ intercalation in a neutral ZnCl2 electrolyte can be achieved for water-proton co-intercalated α-MoO3 (denoted WP-MoO3 ). H2 O molecules located between MoO3 interlayers block Zn2+ intercalation pathways while allowing smooth H3 O+ intercalation/diffusion through a Grotthuss proton-conduction mechanism. Compared to α-MoO3 with a Zn2+ -intercalation mechanism, WP-MoO3 delivers the substantially enhanced specific capacity (356.8 vs. 184.0 mA h g-1 ), rate capability (77.5 % vs. 42.2 % from 0.4 to 4.8 A g-1 ), and cycling stability (83 % vs. 13 % over 1000 cycles). This work demonstrates the possibility of modulating electrochemical intercalating ions by interlayer engineering, to construct high-rate and long-life electrodes for aqueous batteries.Dysoxic marine waters (DMW, less then  1 μM oxygen) are currently expanding in volume in the oceans, which has biogeochemical, ecological and societal consequences on a global scale. In these environments, distinct bacteria drive an active sulfur cycle, which has only recently been recognized for open-ocean DMW. This review summarizes the current knowledge on these sulfur-cycling bacteria. Critical bottlenecks and questions for future research are specifically addressed. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are core members of DMW. However, their roles are not entirely clear, and they remain largely uncultured. We found support for their remarkable diversity and taxonomic novelty by mining metagenome-assembled genomes from the Black Sea as model ecosystem. We highlight recent insights into the metabolism of key sulfur-oxidizing SUP05 and Sulfurimonas bacteria, and discuss the probable involvement of uncultivated SAR324 and BS-GSO2 bacteria in sulfur oxidation. Uncultivated Marinimicrobia bacteria with a presumed organoheterotrophic metabolism are abundant in DMW. Like SRB, they may use specific molybdoenzymes to conserve energy from the oxidation, reduction or disproportionation of sulfur cycle intermediates such as S0 and thiosulfate, produced from the oxidation of sulfide. A marked activation of the transcription factor signal transducer and activator of transcription 5 (STAT5) has been described in the brain during pregnancy and likely drives some of these changes. We aimed to investigate the physiological mechanism causing this increase in phosphorylated STAT5 (pSTAT5) during pregnancy. In various tissues, STAT5 is known to be activated by a number of different cytokines, including erythropoietin, growth hormone and prolactin. Because the lactogenic hormones that act through the prolactin receptor (PRLR), prolactin and its closely-related placental analogue placental lactogen, are significantly increased during pregnancy, we hypothesised that this receptor was primarily responsible for the pregnancy-induced increase in pSTAT5 in the brain. By examining temporal changes in plasma prolactin levels and the pattern of pSTAT5 immunoreactivity in the hypothalamus during early pregnancy, we found that the level of pSTAT5 was sensitive to circulating levels of endogenous prolactin. Using a transgenic model to conditionally delete PRLRs from forebrain neurones (Prlrlox/lox /CamK-Cre), we assessed the relative contribution of the PRLR to the up-regulation of pSTAT5 in the brain of pregnant ****.     Among various charge-carrier ions for aqueous batteries, non-metal hydronium (H3 O+ ) with small ionic size and fast diffusion kinetics empowers H3 O+ -intercalation electrodes with high rate performance and fast-charging capability. However, pure H3 O+ charge carriers for inorganic electrode materials have only been observed in corrosive acidic electrolytes, rather than in mild neutral electrolytes. Herein, we report how selective H3 O+ intercalation in a neutral ZnCl2 electrolyte can be achieved for water-proton co-intercalated α-MoO3 (denoted WP-MoO3 ). H2 O molecules located between MoO3 interlayers block Zn2+ intercalation pathways while allowing smooth H3 O+ intercalation/diffusion through a Grotthuss proton-conduction mechanism. Compared to α-MoO3 with a Zn2+ -intercalation mechanism, WP-MoO3 delivers the substantially enhanced specific capacity (356.8 vs. 184.0 mA h g-1 ), rate capability (77.5 % vs. 42.2 % from 0.4 to 4.8 A g-1 ), and cycling stability (83 % vs. 13 % over 1000 cycles). In these environments, distinct bacteria drive an active sulfur cycle, which has only recently been recognized for open-ocean DMW. This review summarizes the current knowledge on these sulfur-cycling bacteria. Critical bottlenecks and questions for future research are specifically addressed. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are core members of DMW. However, their roles are not entirely clear, and they remain largely uncultured. We found support for their remarkable diversity and taxonomic novelty by mining metagenome-assembled genomes from the Black Sea as model ecosystem. We highlight recent insights into the metabolism of key sulfur-oxidizing SUP05 and Sulfurimonas bacteria, and discuss the probable involvement of uncultivated SAR324 and BS-GSO2 bacteria in sulfur oxidation. Uncultivated Marinimicrobia bacteria with a presumed organoheterotrophic metabolism are abundant in DMW. Like SRB, they may use specific molybdoenzymes to conserve energy from the oxidation, reduction or disproportionation of sulfur cycle intermediates such as S0 and thiosulfate, produced from the oxidation of sulfide. We expect that tailored sampling methods and a renewed focus on cultivation will yield deeper insight into sulfur-cycling bacteria in DMW.Pregnancy represents a period of remarkable adaptive physiology throughout the body, with many of these important adaptations mediated by changes in gene transcription in the brain. A marked activation of the transcription factor signal transducer and activator of transcription 5 (STAT5) has been described in the brain during pregnancy and likely drives some of these changes. We aimed to investigate the physiological mechanism causing this increase in phosphorylated STAT5 (pSTAT5) during pregnancy. In various tissues, STAT5 is known to be activated by a number of different cytokines, including erythropoietin, growth hormone and prolactin. Because the lactogenic hormones that act through the prolactin receptor (PRLR), prolactin and its closely-related placental analogue placental lactogen, are significantly increased during pregnancy, we hypothesised that this receptor was primarily responsible for the pregnancy-induced increase in pSTAT5 in the brain. By examining temporal changes in plasma prolactin levels and the pattern of pSTAT5 immunoreactivity in the hypothalamus during early pregnancy, we found that the level of pSTAT5 was sensitive to circulating levels of endogenous prolactin. Using a transgenic model to conditionally delete PRLRs from forebrain neurones (Prlrlox/lox /CamK-Cre), we assessed the relative contribution of the PRLR to the up-regulation of pSTAT5 in the brain of pregnant mice. In the absence of PRLRs on most forebrain neurones, a significant reduction in pSTAT5 was observed throughout the hypothalamus and amygdala in late pregnancy, confirming that PRLR is key in mediating this response. The exception to this was the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus, where only 17% of pSTAT5 immunoreactivity during pregnancy was in PRLR-expressing cells. Finally, we performed a mediation analysis with g-computation to simulate whether a hypothetical eradication of health problems would weaken the association between parental and offspring education. All types of health problems reduced the likelihood of secondary education, but mental disorders were associated with the largest reductions. Among those with secondary education, there was further evidence of selection to tertiary education. High parental education buffered against the negative impact of mental disorders on completing secondary education but exacerbated it in the case of tertiary education. The simulated eradication of health problems slightly reduced disparities by parental education in secondary education (up to 10%) but increased disparities in tertiary education (up to 2%). Adolescent health problems and parental education are strong but chiefly independent predictors of educational attainment.Recent data from various experimental models support the link between extracellular tau and neurodegeneration; however, the exact mechanisms by which extracellular tau or its modified forms or aggregates cause neuronal death remain unclear. In this study, we investigated whether extracellular phosphorylated tau2N4R (p-tau2N4R), isoform 1N4R (tau1N4R) and K18 peptide can induce neuronal death or loss in primary neuronal-glial cell cultures. We found that p-tau2N4R at 30 nM concentration induced loss of viable neurons; however, 700 nM p-tau2N4R caused necrosis of both neurons and microglia, and this neuronal death was partially glial cell-dependent. We also found that extracellular tau1N4R oligomers, but not monomers, at 3 μM concentration caused neuronal death in mixed cell cultures self-assembly tau1N4R dimers-tetramers induced neuronal necrosis and apoptosis, whereas Aβ-promoted tau1N4R oligomers caused glial cell-dependent loss of neurons without signs of increased cell death. Monomeric and pre-aggregated tau peptide containing 4R repeats (K18) had no effect in mixed cultures, suggesting that tau neurotoxicity might be dependent on N-terminal part of the protein. Taken together, our results show that extracellular p-tau2N4R is the most toxic form among investigated tau species inducing loss of neurons at low nanomolar concentrations and that neurotoxicity of tau1N4R is dependent on its aggregation state.
    Despite the long-term renoprotective effects of Metformin, a recent study on data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported a possible nephrotoxic effect, contributing to the development of acute kidney injury (AKI). We investigated the association between metformin and AKI in patients admitted with the AKI-prone condition of acute infection and compared results with corresponding results of other antidiabetics.

    In a nationwide register-based case-control study, we identified Danish patients with type 2 diabetes hospitalized with acute infection between 2008 and 2018. Cases of AKI had an increase in plasma creatinine ≥  × 1.5 during admission, controls did not. Antidiabetics were identified up to 6months before admission. Odds ratio (OR) of each antidiabetic was computed in separate multiple logistic regression models adjusted for relevant medication and comorbidities and results compared.

    We included 46,811 patients, hereof 9454 AKIs (20%) and 2186 (4.7%) severe AKIs. Overall, 56% were males, median age (IQR) was 73 (65-81). Sixty percent received metformin, 13% sulfonylurea, 31% insulin and 8% dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i), with equal distribution between cases and controls. Metformin was associated with increased OR (CI) for AKI, 1.07 (1.02-1.12), equally to sulfonylurea, 1.10 (1.03-1.18) and DPP-4i, 1.11 (1.02-1.20), but not insulin, 0.99 (0.93-1.05). In severe AKI, results for metformin were 1.27 (1.25-1.40) but increased equivalently to other antidiabetics.

The basic principle of RCA is chelation of ionized calcium by citrate within the extracorporeal circuit, thus blocking the coagulation cascade. Magnesium, a divalent cation, follows the same fate as calcium; the amount lost in the effluent includes both magnesium-citrate complexes and the free fraction directly diffusing through the hemofilter. While increasing the magnesium content of dialysis/replacement solutions may decrease the risk of hypomagnesemia, the optimal concentration for the variable combination of solutions adopted in different KRT protocols has not yet been identified.

    We examined health insurance benefits, workplace policies, and health promotion programs in small to midsize businesses in Alaska whose workforces were at least 20% Alaska Native. Participating businesses were enrolled in a randomized trial to improve health promotion efforts.

    Twenty-six Alaska businesses completed from January 2009 through October 2010 a 30-item survey on health benefits, policies, and programs in the workplace. We generated frequency statistics to describe overall insurance coverage, and to detail insurance coverage, company policies, and workplace programs in 3 domains tobacco use, physical activity and nutrition, and disease screening and management.

    Businesses varied in the number of employees (mean, 250; median, 121; range, 41-1,200). Most businesses offered at least partial health insurance for full-time employees and their dependents. Businesses completely banned tobacco in the workplace, and insurance coverage for tobacco cessation was limited. Eighteen had onsite food vendors, yet fewer than 6 businesses offered healthy food options, and even fewer offered them at competitive prices. Cancer screening and treatment were the health benefits most commonly covered by insurance.

    Although insurance coverage and workplace policies for chronic disease screening and management were widely available, significant opportunities remain for Alaska businesses to collaborate with federal, state, and community organizations on health promotion efforts to reduce the risk of chronic illness among their employees.

    The number of urban community gardens, including those on rooftops, is increasing. However, few studies have explored the benefits of these gardens for people with intellectual disabilities or mental health disorders. We evaluated the association between urban rooftop gardening and quality of life of individuals with moderate to very marked disability.

    We collected quality of life information with a preliminary version of the INTEGRAL Scale questionnaire from all gardeners (n = 54) and among a comparison group of nongardeners (n = 43). We also conducted semi-structured interviews with participants and technicians, and made field observations.

    Our results indicated that urban rooftop gardening was associated with better personal development and suggested enhanced physical and emotional well-being, sense of purpose, social inclusion, interpersonal relations (including new perspectives on the urban environment and the changes in social roles), and general quality of life.

    Walking school bus programs increase children's physical activity through active travel to school; however, research to inform large-scale implementation of such programs is limited. We investigated contextual factors, implementation outcomes, and student outcomes in existing walking school bus programs in the United States and internationally.

    Walking school bus programs involve a group of children walking to school together with an adult leader. On the trip to school, these adults provide social support, address potential traffic and interpersonal safety, and serve as role models to the children while children increase their physical activity levels.

    We conducted surveys with existing walking school bus programs identified through internet searches, referrals, and relevant email listservs. Leaders from 184 programs that operated at least 1 trip per week completed the survey. We used regression analyses to compare differences in contextual factors by area income and location, associations between contes can improve reach, implementation, and sustainability of walking school bus programs and can increase children's physical activity.

    Health care avoidance by Medicare beneficiaries with chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes can result in adverse health and economic outcomes. The objective of this study was to describe factors associated with choices to avoid health care among Medicare beneficiaries with type 2 diabetes.

    We used a survey-weighted logistic model and the nationally representative 2016 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey to analyze data on 1,782 Medicare beneficiaries aged ≥65 with type 2 diabetes, to examine associations between Medicare beneficiaries' decisions to avoid health care and multiple factors (eg, dissatisfaction with information given by providers, health problems that should have been discussed with providers but were not, worry about health more than other people their age).

We generated frequency statistics to describe overall insurance coverage, and to detail insurance coverage, company policies, and workplace programs in 3 domains tobacco use, physical activity and nutrition, and disease screening and management. Businesses varied in the number of employees (mean, 250; median, 121; range, 41-1,200). Most businesses offered at least partial health insurance for full-time employees and their dependents. Businesses completely banned tobacco in the workplace, and insurance coverage for tobacco cessation was limited. Eighteen had onsite food vendors, yet fewer than 6 businesses offered healthy food options, and even fewer offered them at competitive prices. Cancer screening and treatment were the health benefits most commonly covered by insurance. Although insurance coverage and workplace policies for chronic disease screening and management were widely available, significant opportunities remain for Alaska businesses to collaborate with federal, state, and community organizations on health promotion efforts to reduce the risk of chronic illness among their employees. The number of urban community gardens, including those on rooftops, is increasing. However, few studies have explored the benefits of these gardens for people with intellectual disabilities or mental health disorders. We evaluated the association between urban rooftop gardening and quality of life of individuals with moderate to very marked disability. We collected quality of life information with a preliminary version of the INTEGRAL Scale questionnaire from all gardeners (n = 54) and among a comparison group of nongardeners (n = 43). We also conducted semi-structured interviews with participants and technicians, and made field observations. Our results indicated that urban rooftop gardening was associated with better personal development and suggested enhanced physical and emotional well-being, sense of purpose, social inclusion, interpersonal relations (including new perspectives on the urban environment and the changes in social roles), and general quality of life. Walking school bus programs increase children's physical activity through active travel to school; however, research to inform large-scale implementation of such programs is limited. We investigated contextual factors, implementation outcomes, and student outcomes in existing walking school bus programs in the United States and internationally. Walking school bus programs involve a group of children walking to school together with an adult leader. On the trip to school, these adults provide social support, address potential traffic and interpersonal safety, and serve as role models to the children while children increase their physical activity levels. We conducted surveys with existing walking school bus programs identified through internet searches, referrals, and relevant email listservs. Leaders from 184 programs that operated at least 1 trip per week completed the survey. We used regression analyses to compare differences in contextual factors by area income and location, associations between contes can improve reach, implementation, and sustainability of walking school bus programs and can increase children's physical activity. Walking school bus programs can be implemented successfully in many contexts using various models. The involvement of several people in leadership roles is critical for sustainability. The objective of this study was to describe factors associated with choices to avoid health care among Medicare beneficiaries with type 2 diabetes. We used a survey-weighted logistic model and the nationally representative 2016 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey to analyze data on 1,782 Medicare beneficiaries aged ≥65 with type 2 diabetes, to examine associations between Medicare beneficiaries' decisions to avoid health care and multiple factors (eg, dissatisfaction with information given by providers, health problems that should have been discussed with providers but were not, worry about health more than other people their age). Of our study sample, 26.1% reported they avoid health care. In particular, bacterial pHi homeostasis is important for physiology, ecology, and pathogenesis. Here we report an exquisite bacterial acid-resistance (AR) mechanism in which proton leak elicits a pre-emptive AR response. A single bacterial cell undergoes quantal electrochemical excitation, termed "BacFlash", which consists of membrane depolarization, transient pHi rise, and bursting production of reactive oxygen species. BacFlash ignition is dictated by acid stress in the form of proton leak across the plasma membrane and the rate of BacFlash occurrence is reversely correlated with the pHi buffering capacity. Through genome-wide screening, we further identify the ATP synthase Fo complex subunit a as the putative proton sensor for BacFlash biogenesis. Importantly, persistent BacFlash hyperactivity activates transcription of a panel of key AR genes and predisposes the cells to survive imminent extreme acid stress. No significant differences were found between the ECMO circuits and the controls for any of the measured variables cobalamin, folate, vitamin A, glucose, minerals, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides or total proteins. There was an initial decrease and then an increase in the concentration of cobalamin and folate. Vitamin A concentrations decreased in both groups over time. There was a decrease in concentration of glucose and an increased concentration of lactate dehydrogenase over time in both groups. There were no significant alterations in the concentrations of nutritional supplements in an ex vivo ECMO circuit compared to control samples. Herein, we show that submergence deactivates wound-induced defence against herbivore attack in Arabidopsis thaliana. Submergence rapidly suppressed the wound-induced expression of jasmonic acid (JA) biosynthesis genes, resulting in reduced JA accumulation. While plants exposed to hypoxia in argon gas exhibited similar reduced wound responses, the inhibitory effects were initiated after short-term submergence without signs for lack of oxygen. Instead, expression of ethylene-responsive genes was increased after short-term submergence. Blocking ethylene signalling by ein2-1 mutation partially restored suppressed expression of several wound-responsive genes by submergence. In addition, submergence rapidly removed active markers of histone modifications at a gene locus involved in JA biosynthesis. Our findings suggest that submergence inactivates defence systems of plants, which would explain the proliferation of herbivores after flooding.Metamaterials provide compelling capabilities to manipulate electromagnetic waves beyond the natural materials and can dramatically enhance both their electric and magnetic fields. Magnetic hot spot of the MIM metamaterial improves considerably electromagnetic coupling with spins in the embedded Py stripes. With the whole hybridized structure being optimized based on coupled-mode theory, perfect absorption condition is approached and an approximately 190-fold enhancement of spin-rectifying photovoltage is experimentally demonstrated at the ferromagnetic resonance at 7.1 GHz. Our work provides an innovative solution to harvest microwave energy for spintronic applications, and opens the door to hybridized magnetism from artificial and natural magnetic materials for emergent applications such as efficient optospintronics, magnonic metamaterials and wireless energy transfer.

He had undetectable plasma HIV-1 RNA load and CD4+ of 606 cells/mm3. No opportunistic infections were found. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed mildly elevated protein concentration and HIV-1 viral load of 534 copies/mL.     To determine the state of the vertebrobasilar stroke care chain in our hospital reference area by evaluating the factors related to stroke code activation and management times.

    Observational, analytical and retrospective study, carried out during the period 2017-2018, which includes patients admitted with a diagnosis of stroke confirmed by neuroimaging. Data were collected consecutively during assessment in the emergency department and admission to the stroke unit. Clinical factors, neurological signs and symptoms at the time of admission, detection of large-vessel occlusion and variables related to the care chain were evaluated, namely, basic medical attention, stroke code activation, onset-to-door time and door-to-imaging time.

    Altogether 954 patients were included in the study, 233 with vertebrobasilar stroke. The onset-to-door and door-to-imaging times registered were significantly higher for posterior circulation stroke. The factors related to a lower delay in onset-to-door time were National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale > 4, dysarthria and loss of strength. A shorter delay in door-to-imaging time was observed for the variables basic attention by medical emergency service, dysarthria, loss of strength and presence of more than one symptom/sign. Predictive variables for stroke code activation were a history of smoking, clinical signs of dysarthria or loss of strength, and the presence of more than one clinical manifestation.

    Hypokalemic periodic paralysis is a neuromuscular disease characterized by a combination of flaccid paralysis episodes (or muscular weakness) that are related to low levels of potassium in blood. As a consequence of its low prevalence, there are still clinical and management aspects to characterize.

    A systematic review of the clinical cases published in the last decade has been developed by analyzing demographic and genetic features, the episodes' characteristics, the received treatments, the response to them and also, the differences and evolution of patients depending on the most prevalent genetic alterations CACNA1S and SCN4A.

    A total of 33 articles were included, allowing 40 individuals to be reviewed. The average age of onset of symptoms was 15.3 ± 9.7 years. The most frequent altered gene was CACNA1S in 20 (60.5%) cases. It was observed that subjects presenting an alteration of the gene responsible for the calcium channel, CACNA1S, presented lower serum potassium levels, own triggers and a higher proportion of subjects showing dyspnea during the crisis. Only 50% of the subjects respond to classical oral treatment with acetazolamide. Potassium-sparing diuretics and antiepileptics drugs emerge as an alternative.

OBJECTIVE The Polish Medical Society of Radiology (PLTR) and the Polish Society of Neurology (PTN) present the second version of their recommendations for investigations routinely conducted in magnetic resonance imaging departments in patients with multiple sclerosis. This version includes new data and practical comments for electroradiology technologists and radiologists. The recommended protocol aims to improve the MRI procedure and, most importantly, to standardise the method of conducting scans in all MRI departments. Altogether 954 patients were included in the study, 233 with vertebrobasilar stroke. The onset-to-door and door-to-imaging times registered were significantly higher for posterior circulation stroke. The factors related to a lower delay in onset-to-door time were National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale > 4, dysarthria and loss of strength. A shorter delay in door-to-imaging time was observed for the variables basic attention by medical emergency service, dysarthria, loss of strength and presence of more than one symptom/sign. Predictive variables for stroke code activation were a history of smoking, clinical signs of dysarthria or loss of strength, and the presence of more than one clinical manifestation. Hypokalemic periodic paralysis is a neuromuscular disease characterized by a combination of flaccid paralysis episodes (or muscular weakness) that are related to low levels of potassium in blood. As a consequence of its low prevalence, there are still clinical and management aspects to characterize. A systematic review of the clinical cases published in the last decade has been developed by analyzing demographic and genetic features, the episodes' characteristics, the received treatments, the response to them and also, the differences and evolution of patients depending on the most prevalent genetic alterations CACNA1S and SCN4A. A total of 33 articles were included, allowing 40 individuals to be reviewed. The average age of onset of symptoms was 15.3 ± 9.7 years. The most frequent altered gene was CACNA1S in 20 (60.5%) cases. It was observed that subjects presenting an alteration of the gene responsible for the calcium channel, CACNA1S, presented lower serum potassium levels, own triggers and a higher proportion of subjects showing dyspnea during the crisis. Only 50% of the subjects respond to classical oral treatment with acetazolamide. Potassium-sparing diuretics and antiepileptics drugs emerge as an alternative. OBJECTIVE The Polish Medical Society of Radiology (PLTR) and the Polish Society of Neurology (PTN) present the second version of their recommendations for investigations routinely conducted in magnetic resonance imaging departments in patients with multiple sclerosis. This version includes new data and practical comments for electroradiology technologists and radiologists. The recommended protocol aims to improve the MRI procedure and, most importantly, to standardise the method of conducting scans in all MRI departments. This is crucial for the initial diagnostics necessary for establishing a diagnosis, as well as for MS patient monitoring, which directly translates into significant clinical decisions.
