Background Perceived racial/ethnic discrimination and poor sleep occur across all races/ethnicities in the U.S., although both are most common among racial/ethnic minorities. https://www.selleckchem.com/ Few studies have investigated associations between perceived racial/ethnic discrimination and various sleep dimensions in a multiethnic population. Methods We analyzed cross-sectional associations among 40,038 eligible Sister Study participants (enrollment 2003-2009) who reported ever/never experiencing specific types of everyday (eg, treated unfairly at a store or restaurant) or major (eg, unfairly stopped, threatened, or searched by police) discrimination attributed to their race/ethnicity during a follow-up survey in 2008-2012. Participants also reported short sleep duration ( less then 7 h), sleep debt (≥2-h difference between longest and shortest sleep duration), frequent napping (≥3 times/week), and insomnia. Poisson regression with robust variance estimation, adjusted for sociodemographic and health characteristics, estimated prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between each type of racial/ethnic discrimination and each sleep dimension, overall and by race/ethnicity. Results Mean age was 55 ± 8.9 years, 89% were Non-Hispanic (NH)-white, 8% NH-black, and 3% Hispanic/Latina. NH-black participants were the most likely to report everyday (76% vs. 4% [NH-whites] and 36% [Hispanics/Latinas]) and major racial/ethnic discrimination (52% vs. 2% [NH-whites] and 18% [Hispanics/Latinas]). Participants who experienced both types versus neither were more likely to report short sleep duration (PR = 1.17 [95% CI 1.09-1.25]) and insomnia symptoms (PR = 1.10 [1.01-1.20]) but not other poor sleep dimensions. Each participant completed a structured interview and had their blood pressure measured. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Multivariate logistic regression was used to model variations in prevalence of sleep disorders and hypertension. Results In the study population, the prevalence rates of sleep disorders and hypertension were 46.5% and 50.3%, respectively. Women had higher prevalence of both chronic illnesses (53.4% vs. 38.7%, 53.1% vs. 47.6%, P less then 0.01). After adjusting for age, sex, and residential status, older adults of minority ethnicity had a higher prevalence of sleep disorders than the Han ethnic majority (P less then 0.01). Attainment of higher levels of education and lower annual household income were also associated with a greater risk of sleep disorders (P less then 0.01). Further, logistic regression analysis indicated that older adults with sleep disorders had a greater risk of being hypertensive (P less then 0.01). Conclusions Sleep disorders are highly prevalent in rural southwest China. Future interventions to improve sleep quality would benefit from tailoring to address individual SES. Improving sleep quality profoundly reduces prevalence of hypertension.Temporary events such as music festivals are often organized in places that are not connected to a sewage network. As such, the waste (water) generated and discharged can place a heavy burden on the environment. A mobile vertical flow constructed wetland (MCW) with an area of 15 m2 was constructed, optimized and operated for three years treating grey water (GW) as well as grey and black water (GW + BW) at different festival locations to tackle this problem. During the initial development phase, the appropriate influent type (GW and/or GW + BW) was determined and challenge tests with pre-settled diluted domestic waste water (mimicking GW) were carried out to determine the maximal allowable loading rate. The MCW was able to treat both types of water. However, for further experiments GW was selected as the discharge limits could not be met when treating GW + BW. The challenge tests demonstrated that the MCW could be operated at a maximal allowable hydraulic loading rate of 1.1 m3·m-2·d-1, corresponding to mass loading rates of 68 gTSS·m-2·d-1, 160 gCOD·m-2·d-1 and 137 gBOD·m-2·d-1. During treatment of GW, the MCW achieved effluent concentrations for respectively chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS) and total phosphorus (TP) of 43 mg·L-1, 16 mg·L-1, 2.7 mg·L-1 and 1.7 mgP·L-1. This corresponds to a removal of 90% (COD), 95% (BOD), 97% (TSS) and 76% (TP) respectively. Total nitrogen removal was 25% (from 45 mgN·L-1 to 34 mgN·L-1) as particularly denitrification was not complete. As a further development, the MCW was coupled to a drinking water treatment system using ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis (UF-RO) membranes to produce potable water on site. The drinking water system produced potable water that met the legislative criteria. As such, a sustainable and mobile water treatment system aiming at producing potable water at temporary events was demonstrated.Chromatographic separation of the extracts of the Australian rainforest plant Ternstroemia cherryi led to the isolation of five undescribed barrigenol-like triterpenoids, ternstroenols A - E, from the fruits and three known ones from the leaves. Ternstroenols A - E represent a new form of structural diversity, being the first in its kind to incorporate a trans- 2, 4, 6- decatrienoyl moiety at C-22. The structures of the ternstroenols were assigned by detailed spectroscopic analysis, degradation and chemical derivatization. All compounds exhibited potent anti-inflammatory activity in LPS and IFN- γ activated RAW 264.7 macrophages, with IC50 values as low as 0.7 μM. Despite the remarkable potency, high levels of unwanted cell growth inhibition was also observed, which prompted their cytotoxic evaluation in U87/U251 human glioblastoma cell lines.

The median wait-time to endoscopy was 52 days (IQR 14-218) without differences by race. Compared with patients diagnosed with stage 1 CRC, patients with stage 4 CRC were more likely to complete an endoscopy within the first quartile of time (22.2% vs. 17.4%, p less then 0.01). Living arrangement, insurance type, and comorbidity, but not race, were significant factors associated with endoscopy completion. CONCLUSIONS We found no statistically significant differences in time from billed CRC-associated symptoms to endoscopy completion or in CRC stage among AA and AI/AN compared to Whites. This suggests that other factors are more likely to contribute to observed mortality disparities.BACKGROUND The extent of surgery (ES) during cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS + HIPEC) is a well-known risk factor for major postoperative morbidity. Interestingly, the reliability of surgeons to predict the ES prior to CRS + HIPEC is unknown. METHODS In this prospective, observational cohort study, five surgeons predicted the ES prior to surgery in all consecutive patients with peritoneal metastases (PM) who were scheduled for CRS + HIPEC between March 2018 and May 2019. After the preoperative work-up for CRS + HIPEC was completed, all surgeons independently predicted, for each individual patient, the resection or preservation of 22 different anatomical structures and the presence of a stoma post-HIPEC according to a standardized ES form. The actual ES during CRS + HIPEC was extracted from the surgical procedure report and compared with the predicted ES. Overall and individual positive (PPV) and negative predictive values (NPV) for each anatomical structure were calculated. RESULTS One hundred and thirty-one ES forms were collected from 32 patients who successfully underwent CRS + HIPEC. The number of resections was predicted correctly 24 times (18.3%), overestimated 57 times (43.5%), and underestimated 50 times (38.2%). Overall PPVs for the different anatomical structures ranged between 33.3 and 87.8%. Overall, NPVs ranged between 54.9 and 100%, and an NPV > 90% was observed for 12 anatomical structures. CONCLUSIONS Experienced surgeons seem to be able to better predict the anatomical structures that remain in situ after CRS + HIPEC, rather than predict the resections that were necessary to achieve a complete cytoreduction.BACKGROUND We aimed to clarify the role of potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily J member 15 (KCNJ15) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) cells and its potential as a prognosticator in ESCC patients. METHODS KCNJ15 transcription levels were evaluated in 13 ESCC cell lines and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) array analysis was conducted to detect coordinately expressed genes with KCNJ15. The biological functions of KCNJ15 in cell invasion, proliferation, migration, and adhesion were validated through small interfering RNA-mediated knockdown experiments. Cell proliferation was further evaluated through the forced expression experiment. KCNJ15 expression was detected in 200 ESCC tissues by quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) and analyzed in 64 representative tissues by immunohistochemistry. Correlations between KCNJ15 expression levels and clinicopathological features were also analyzed. RESULTS The KCNJ15 expression levels varied widely in ESCC cell lines and correlated with COL3A1, JAG1, and F11R. Knockdown of KCNJ15 expression significantly repressed cell invasion, proliferation, and migration of ESCC cells in vitro. Furthermore, overexpression of KCNJ15 resulted in increased cell proliferation. Patients were stratified using the cut-off value of KCNJ15 messenger RNA (mRNA) levels in 200 ESCC tissues using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis; the high KCNJ15 expression group had significantly shorter overall and disease-free survival times. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to address the value of diagnostic laparoscopy (DLS) and abdominal cytology (ACyt) for the detection and evaluation of the extent of PM in patients with UrAC. METHODS A consecutive series of cN0M0 patients with UrAC who underwent DLS with or without ACyt at a tertiary referral center between 2000 and 2018 was assessed. Patients were staged with computed tomography (CT) and/or positron emission tomography (PET)/CT or bone scan. DLS was performed to rule out PM and to evaluate the extent and resectability of PM if seen on imaging. Sensitivity and specificity values were calculated for imaging, DLS, ACyt, and the combination of DLS and ACyt. RESULTS Thirty-two patients with UrAC underwent DLS. ACyt was obtained in 19 patients. Four patients had suspicion of PM on imaging. In the 28 patients who were PM-negative on imaging, DLS and ACyt revealed PM in 6 (21%) patients, of whom 5 had macroscopically visible PM; 1 patient had positive ACyt without visible PM. Sensitivity of combined DLS/ACyt for the detection of PM was 91%, with a specificity of 100%, whereas sensitivity of imaging was 36%. DLS correctly predicted resectability in all patients. CONCLUSION Combined DLS/ACyt proved an effective tool to detect occult PM and to evaluate the extent of PM to select UrAC patients for possible treatment with CRS/HIPEC.BACKGROUND Peritoneal recurrence (PR) of colorectal cancer is a poor prognostic factor but may be treatable by curative resection. Prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) and risk factors for postoperative recurrence were identified. RESULTS Among 2256 patients, 66 had PR (2.9%). Surgical resection of PR was performed in 41 patients. Curative resection was achieved macroscopically in 38 cases without diffuse metastases in the peritoneum distant from the primary tumor and with a peritoneal cancer index less then 10. In multivariate analysis, curative resection was a significant prognostic factor [hazard ratio (HR) 0.198] for better 5-year OS compared with cases without curative resection (68.7% vs. 6.3%, P less then 0.001). According to the results of a recent observational epidemiologic study, the PURE study, an elevated consumption of saturated fats in the diet would not be detrimental for the cardiovascular risk, and would not increase all-causes-mortality. A part for the criticism the study received, for being conducted in eastern countries and mainly in rural settings, its results are substantially in agreement with the most recent epidemiological literature, which gradually redefined the pro-atherogenic role of the saturated fats. Our data implied the potential toxicity of chronic exposure to nanoplastics at predicted environmental concentrations on organisms.Freshwater ecosystems are vulnerable to residual concentrations of chemical agents from anthropogenic activities, and the real impacts of such compounds can only be evaluated accurately using ecotoxicological tests. The assessment of ecotoxicological effects of peracetic acid (PAA) and the active chlorine of calcium hypochlorite (Ca(ClO)2) on the insect Chironomus xanthus Meigen (Diptera Chironomidae) is highly relevant as there are few reports on its effects in fresh water ecosystems. To our best knowledge, this is the first study to assess the chronic toxicity of the compounds to C. xanthus. The toxicity bioassays for C. xanthus included the acute effect (CL50) and the chronic effects based on body length, head width, and cumulative emergence. The results obtained in the acute effect tests indicated that the active chlorine of Ca(ClO)2 is 14 fold more toxic than PAA to C. xanthus. In sublethal evaluations, the active chlorine of Ca(ClO)2 presented higher toxicity than PAA in terms of percentage emergence, body development, and head width. In general, the results showed lower PAA toxicity relative to the active chlorine of Ca(ClO)2, demonstrating that PAA is a promising substitute for chlorinated disinfectants. In addition, the study facilitates the establishment of reference values for the safe release of effluents treated with PAA into water bodies.Seasonal changes in chemical compositions and source apportionment of PM2.5 during clear and hazy days help to develop effective control policy, but limited information is available in megacity Nanjing. In this study, 102 PM2.5 samples were collected during clear and hazy days from 4 seasons in 2014-2015. Their chemical compositions (organic and elemental carbon, 8 water-soluble ions, and 22 inorganic elements) were determined, which were used for PM2.5 source apportionment using the PMF model. The mean PM2.5 concentration was lower during clear days than hazy days (42 vs. 122 μg m-3), so were mean concentrations of metals (0.48 vs. 0.82 ng m-3 for Co and 2.0 vs. 2.4 μg m-3 for Na), water soluble ions (0.10 vs. 0.16 μg m-3 for Mg2+ and 12 vs. 23 μg m-3 for SO42-), and carbon species (3.2 vs. 5.4 μg m-3 for elemetal C and 20 vs. 35 μg m-3 for organic C). Based on the PMF model, five main sources of PM2.5 were identified including secondary aerosols (31%), coal combustion (27%), road & construction dust (26%), oil combustion (8.5%), and iron & steel industry (5.1%) for all samples. The PM2.5 concentrations from the 5 sources were 0.01-46.5, averaging 9.8 μg m-3 during clear days (PM2.5 less then 75 μg m-3), which increased to 1.83-60.1, averaging 18 μg m-3 during hazy days. However, based on their contributions to PM2.5, only secondary aerosols increased during hazy days compared to clear days in all seasons (11 vs. 42%), indicating its dominant contribution to haze in Nanjing. For different seasons, road & construction dust was a major contributor to PM2.5 in the summer, while oil combustion (4.86 vs.16.8%) contributed more in spring. However, coal combustion became the main source of PM2.5 during the summer (44-85%) due to the pollution controls for the Youth Olympic Games. In this study, the iron-coated aluminum (Fe/Al) BNP and aluminum-coated iron (Al/Fe) BNP systems were designed for remediating Cr6+-contaminated groundwater. The chemical liquid-phase deposition and co-reduction method was applied to produce BNPs. Cr6+ removal rate by Fe/Al BNPs was directly proportional to the saturation concentration and reactive sites, which caused a higher Cr6+ removal rate. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model could be used to describe the Cr6+ adsorption mechanism by Fe/Al BNPs. Results show that Fe/Al BNPs and Al/Fe BNPs could reduce Cr6+ to Cr3+, and the removal efficiencies for Cr6+ were 1.47 g/g BNP and 0.07 g/g BNP, respectively. Detection of Cr3+ in the aqueous phase was observed during the Cr6+ removal process. Results from X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed that Cr(OH)3 was present on the surface of BNPs. Main mechanisms caused Cr6+ removal included reduction, precipitation, and adsorption. The reduction of Cr6+ produced OH-, which created alkaline environment and facilitated the formation of chromium hydroxide precipitates [Cr(OH)3]. Thus, the migration of Cr3+ was prevented and the environmental risk was reduced. This study demonstrates the need to improve the quality of reporting CBPRs. The supramolecular interactions were studied by molecular dynamics simulations and by monitoring the emission and the absorption spectra of DOX. Biological studies revealed that two of the synthesized nano-vectors are effectively able to get the drug into the studied cell lines and also to enhance the cell mortality of DOX at a **** lower effective dose. Two novel parameters, the mean premotor duration (MPD) and the mean premotor power (MPP) were used to distinguish patterns of muscle activity. Here we tested the hypothesis was maximal grip strength is primed by muscle activity during the premotor phase. Our results demonstrate that MPD for each muscle group was significantly longer in the CA condition than for the SI condition (BF10 = 491497) and that MPP was significantly greater in EDC than in FDS (BF10 = 4305). Furthermore, both the MPD and MPP of the EDC were significantly correlated with maximum grip force. These results suggest that the increase of premotor activity consequent to the mental effort (focused concentration) may support internal biomechanical and physiological mechanisms which serve to enhance patterns of neuromuscular synergies.Gastric cancer is one of the most commonly occurring cancers worldwide. Both Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analyses were subsequently used to investigate the function of dysregulated long noncoding RNAs and messenger RNAs. Cis and trans action was used to predict the possible targets of long noncoding RNAs, and a coexpression network was created to simulate the complex intergenic interactions. Ninety-five dysregulated long noncoding RNAs and 123 messenger RNAs were identified, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to validate 6 filtered long noncoding RNAs. Gene Ontology and KEGG pathway analyses identified several remarkably biological processes and signaling pathways, including spliceosome, RNA transport, and ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis. The chained direct out-of-pocket consumer price index we construct shows a roughly 50% decline for generic prescription drugs between 2007 and 2016. The outcome was current SV, defined as being physically forced to have sexual intercourse within the last 12 months. We examined respondent's background, sexual activities, and experience of domestic violence (DV). Logistic regression analyses were performed using STATA/SE v.15.1, accounting for survey design and sample weights. Values of p less than .05 were considered statistically significant. ArcMap was used to demonstrate geographic distribution of SV cases. We found that about 258 (6.3%) women rhelp inform the current emergency operations against SV in Sierra Leone.To assess the impact of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) to avoid HIV infection as an additional service in a routine Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) clinic.Methods We used routinely obtained retrospective data to estimate the increased workload on the existing facilities. We focussed on STI registration through the laboratory registration system and put this in a national perspective. A critical appraisal was made of the national HIV notifications, as an indicator of the impact of PrEP. Additional challenges were identified via face-to-face interviews with clinicians with at least five years experience in the STI clinic.Results PrEP delivery puts a substantial burden on a routine STI clinic, in terms of counselling users and prescribing drugs, and regular screening and treating of STIs. Psycho-social aspects need to be incorporated as part of a comprehensive approach of the PrEP user. This requires skills and resources that are not yet always available in a clinic, specialised in HIV and STI care. The increasing demand for this service calls for a careful and critical appraisal of the existing service model.

Due to analytical difficulties in dealing with sex differences in X-chromosome content and X-inactivation (XCI) in females, this has not been explored for the X chromosome. METHODS Using data from middle age to elderly individuals (age 55+ years) from two Danish cohorts of monozygotic twins and the Scottish Lothian Birth Cohort 1921, we conducted an X-chromosome-wide analysis of age-associated DNA methylation patterns with consideration of stably inferred XCI status. RESULTS Through analysing and comparing sex-specific X-linked DNA methylation changes over age late in life, we identified 123, 293 and 55 CpG sites significant (FDR less then 0.05) only in males, only in females and in both sexes of Danish twins. All findings were significantly replicated in the two Danish twin cohorts. CpG sites escaping XCI are predominantly de-methylated with increasing age across cohorts. In contrast, CpGs highly methylated in both sexes are methylated even further with increasing age. Among the replicated sites in Danish samples, 16 (13%), 24 (8.2%) and 3 (5.5%) CpGs were further validated in LBC1921 (FDR less then 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The X-chromosome of whole blood leukocytes displays age- and sex-dependent DNA methylation patterns in relation to XCI across cohorts.Existing circular RNA (circRNA) databases have become essential for transcriptomics. To address this, we integrate circular transcript collections to develop the circAtlas database based on 1070 RNA-seq samples collected from 19 normal tissues across six vertebrate species. This database contains 1,007,087 highly reliable circRNAs, of which over 81.3% have been assembled into full-length sequences. We profile their expression pattern, conservation, and functional annotation. We describe a novel multiple conservation score, co-expression, and regulatory networks for circRNA annotation and prioritization. After discharge, a "nutrition gap" often occurs in which the patient does not receive enough nutrition to ensure an optimal recovery. METHODS The study is a randomized controlled study ongoing over 112 days. At discharge, the intervention group receives guidance from a clinical dietitian, and an individualized nutrition plan is made. The dietitian will perform telephone follow-up after 4 and 30 days. It will also be possible for the participant, the participant's relatives, or the participant's municipality to contact the dietitian if nutritional questions arise. At the time of discharge, the intervention group will receive a package containing foods and drinks that will cover their nutritional needs on the first day after discharge. April 5, 2018.BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate dental student's perception of facial attractiveness with regard to different combinations of anteroposterior malar-jaw positions using 3-dimensional (3-D) reconstructed images of subjects. METHODS Two Chinese young adults (1 male and 1 female) with straight profiles and average malar projections were selected for the study. 3-D facial images and cone-beam computed tomography images of these two subjects were superimposed using 3-D imaging software. Lateral and oblique views of nine different images were created by moving the maxillomandibular complex and/or zygomatic bone by 4 mm either forward or backward along the sagittal plane. One hundred three undergraduate dental students (n = 24, 33, and 46 students from the Year 3, 4, and 5, respectively) then scored lateral and 45° oblique view images of the newly reconstructed faces. RESULTS In the present study, images with a neutral malar and retruded jaws were found to be the most attractive in both male and female subjects. In addition, the Protruded malar (PM) group (p less then 0.001), and the Retruded Jaws (RJ) group were rated more attractive (p less then 0.001). Furthermore, the Relatively Prominent malar (RP) group was rated more attractive (p less then 0.001) when malar-jaw relative positions were compared. CONCLUSION This study shows that a neutral or a protruded malar favours facial attractiveness in both Chinese male and female subjects. Due to analytical difficulties in dealing with sex differences in X-chromosome content and X-inactivation (XCI) in females, this has not been explored for the X chromosome. METHODS Using data from middle age to elderly individuals (age 55+ years) from two Danish cohorts of monozygotic twins and the Scottish Lothian Birth Cohort 1921, we conducted an X-chromosome-wide analysis of age-associated DNA methylation patterns with consideration of stably inferred XCI status. RESULTS Through analysing and comparing sex-specific X-linked DNA methylation changes over age late in life, we identified 123, 293 and 55 CpG sites significant (FDR less then 0.05) only in males, only in females and in both sexes of Danish twins. All findings were significantly replicated in the two Danish twin cohorts. CpG sites escaping XCI are predominantly de-methylated with increasing age across cohorts. In contrast, CpGs highly methylated in both sexes are methylated even further with increasing age. Among the replicated sites in Danish samples, 16 (13%), 24 (8.2%) and 3 (5.5%) CpGs were further validated in LBC1921 (FDR less then 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The X-chromosome of whole blood leukocytes displays age- and sex-dependent DNA methylation patterns in relation to XCI across cohorts.Existing circular RNA (circRNA) databases have become essential for transcriptomics. After discharge, a "nutrition gap" often occurs in which the patient does not receive enough nutrition to ensure an optimal recovery. METHODS The study is a randomized controlled study ongoing over 112 days. At discharge, the intervention group receives guidance from a clinical dietitian, and an individualized nutrition plan is made. The dietitian will perform telephone follow-up after 4 and 30 days. It will also be possible for the participant, the participant's relatives, or the participant's municipality to contact the dietitian if nutritional questions arise. At the time of discharge, the intervention group will receive a package containing foods and drinks that will cover their nutritional needs on the first day after discharge. April 5, 2018.BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate dental student's perception of facial attractiveness with regard to different combinations of anteroposterior malar-jaw positions using 3-dimensional (3-D) reconstructed images of subjects. METHODS Two Chinese young adults (1 male and 1 female) with straight profiles and average malar projections were selected for the study. 3-D facial images and cone-beam computed tomography images of these two subjects were superimposed using 3-D imaging software. Lateral and oblique views of nine different images were created by moving the maxillomandibular complex and/or zygomatic bone by 4 mm either forward or backward along the sagittal plane. One hundred three undergraduate dental students (n = 24, 33, and 46 students from the Year 3, 4, and 5, respectively) then scored lateral and 45° oblique view images of the newly reconstructed faces. RESULTS In the present study, images with a neutral malar and retruded jaws were found to be the most attractive in both male and female subjects. In addition, the Protruded malar (PM) group (p less then 0.001), and the Retruded Jaws (RJ) group were rated more attractive (p less then 0.001). Furthermore, the Relatively Prominent malar (RP) group was rated more attractive (p less then 0.001) when malar-jaw relative positions were compared. CONCLUSION This study shows that a neutral or a protruded malar favours facial attractiveness in both Chinese male and female subjects. Mean ScreenQ score was 9.6 (±5.0; 1-22). Psychometric properties were strong (rCo-α = 0.74). ScreenQ scores were negatively correlated with CTOPP-2 (Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing, Second Edition) (rρ = -0.57), EVT-2 (Expressive Vocabulary Test, Second Edition) (rρ = -0.45), GRTR (Get Ready to Read!) Body fat percentage (BF%) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, diet by food records, and physical activity and sedentary time by body movement and heart rate monitors. Parental education, smoking, and alcohol consumption and household income were assessed by questionnaires. Gestational age, birth weight, and maternal prepregnancy BMI were obtained from hospital registers. Predictors for thelarche were examined using logistic regression analysis adjusted for age and follow-up time. RESULTS The incidence of thelarche during 2 years increased by 11% (OR 1.11, CI 1.06-1.17, p less then 0.001) for 1 unit increase in baseline BF%. Girls with a smoking parent had a 2.64 (95% CI 1.21-5.77, p = 0.015) times higher incidence of thelarche than other girls. The associations of lower parental education and higher maternal prepregnancy BMI with the higher incidence of thelarche were largely explained by BF%. Other possible predictors were not associated with thelarche. Her CDVA in the left eye was 20/20 (-11.00 + 1.00 × 20). It is notable that she is contact lens-intolerant.Her angle was wide open in each eye, and each optic nerve had severe myopic saucerization and cupping. The axial length was 28.5 mm and 28.7 mm in the right eye and left eye, respectively.The intraocular pressure (IOP) at presentation was 18 mm Hg in the right eye and 20 mm Hg in the left eye; each eye was treated with a topical β-blocker, α-2 agonist, and a prostaglandin.

This article reports on an intervention study that aimed to support communication about the use and effects of CAM between cancer patients and care providers. Methods The intervention consisted of the use of evidence-based information material (website; leaflet) about the effects of CAM for cancer. Focus groups with cancer patients, relatives, nurses and doctors (n = 50) determined the preferred content and format of materials and evaluated the intervention. The information material was informed by a related systematic metareview of literature. A survey identified patient participants' CAM use, information sources, and the extent of communication about CAM before and after the intervention. Results No significant impact of the intervention on communication about CAM for cancer patients, patients' CAM use or sources of information was identified. Health professionals disseminated the leaflet only in response to patients raising the topic; the website was not accessed during consultations. The intervention and information materials were well received. Conclusion Cancer patients and care providers wish to improve communication about CAM. Nevertheless, patients and professionals wait for the other to broach the subject of CAM. This reflects a "culture of waiting."Background/aims Prenatal microcephaly is posited to arise from aberrant mitosis of neural progenitors, which disrupts both neuronal production and survival. Although microcephaly has both a genetic and environmental etiology, the mechanisms by which dysregulation of mitosis causes microcephaly are poorly understood. We previously discovered that prolonged mitosis of mouse neural progenitors, either ex vivo or in vitro, directly alters progeny cell fate, -resulting in precocious differentiation and apoptosis. This raises questions as to whether prolonged progenitor mitosis affects cell fate and neurogenesis in vivo, and what are the underlying mechanisms? Methods/results Towards addressing these knowledge gaps, we developed an in vivo model of mitotic delay. This uses pharmacological inhibition to acutely and reversibly prolong mitosis during cortical development, and fluorescent dyes to label direct progeny. Using this model, we discovered that a causal relationship between mitotic delay of neural progenitors and altered progeny cell fate is evident in vivo. Using transcriptome analyses to investigate the state of delayed cells and their progeny, we uncovered potential molecular mechanisms by which prolonged mitosis induces altered cell fates, including DNA damage and p53 signaling. We then extended our studies to human neural progenitors, demonstrating that lengthened mitosis duration also directly alters neuronal cell fate. Conclusions This study establishes a valuable new experimental paradigm towards understanding mechanisms whereby lengthened mitosis duration may explain some cases of microcephaly.Background The Unified Dyskinesia Rating Scale (UDysRS) is a well-established tool for producing comprehensive assessments of severity and disability associated with dyskinesia in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The scale was originally developed in English, and a broad international effort has been undertaken to develop and validate versions in additional languages. Our aim was to validate the Hebrew version of the UDysRS. Methods We translated the UDysRS into Hebrew, ****-translated it into English, and carried out cognitive pretesting. We then administered the scale to non-demented native Hebrew-speaking patients who fulfilled the Brain Bank diagnostic criteria for probable PD (n = 250). Data were compared to the Reference Standard data used for validating UDysRS translations. Results The different portions of the Hebrew UDysRS showed high internal consistency (α ≥ 0.92). A confirmatory factor analysis in which we compared the Hebrew UDysRS to the Reference Standard version produced a comparative fit index (CFI) of 0.98, exceeding the threshold criterion of CFI > 0.9 indicating factor validity. A secondary exploratory factor analysis provided further support to the consistency between the factor structures of the Hebrew and Reference Standard versions of the UDysRS. Conclusion The UDysRS Hebrew version shows strong clinimetric properties and fulfills the criteria for designation as an official International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society-approved translation for use in clinical and research settings.

Conclusion HIF1α deficiency in dendritic cells attenuates symptoms and inflammatory indicators of allergic rhinitis in a SIRT1-dependent manner.Purpose Communication about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) between cancer patients and health professionals rarely takes place. This article reports on an intervention study that aimed to support communication about the use and effects of CAM between cancer patients and care providers. Methods The intervention consisted of the use of evidence-based information material (website; leaflet) about the effects of CAM for cancer. Focus groups with cancer patients, relatives, nurses and doctors (n = 50) determined the preferred content and format of materials and evaluated the intervention. The information material was informed by a related systematic metareview of literature. A survey identified patient participants' CAM use, information sources, and the extent of communication about CAM before and after the intervention. Results No significant impact of the intervention on communication about CAM for cancer patients, patients' CAM use or sources of information was identified. Health professionals disseminated the leaflet only in response to patients raising the topic; the website was not accessed during consultations. The intervention and information materials were well received. Conclusion Cancer patients and care providers wish to improve communication about CAM. Nevertheless, patients and professionals wait for the other to broach the subject of CAM. This reflects a "culture of waiting."Background/aims Prenatal microcephaly is posited to arise from aberrant mitosis of neural progenitors, which disrupts both neuronal production and survival. Although microcephaly has both a genetic and environmental etiology, the mechanisms by which dysregulation of mitosis causes microcephaly are poorly understood. We previously discovered that prolonged mitosis of mouse neural progenitors, either ex vivo or in vitro, directly alters progeny cell fate, -resulting in precocious differentiation and apoptosis. This raises questions as to whether prolonged progenitor mitosis affects cell fate and neurogenesis in vivo, and what are the underlying mechanisms? Methods/results Towards addressing these knowledge gaps, we developed an in vivo model of mitotic delay. This uses pharmacological inhibition to acutely and reversibly prolong mitosis during cortical development, and fluorescent dyes to label direct progeny. Using this model, we discovered that a causal relationship between mitotic delay of neural progenitors and altered progeny cell fate is evident in vivo. Using transcriptome analyses to investigate the state of delayed cells and their progeny, we uncovered potential molecular mechanisms by which prolonged mitosis induces altered cell fates, including DNA damage and p53 signaling. We then extended our studies to human neural progenitors, demonstrating that lengthened mitosis duration also directly alters neuronal cell fate. Conclusions This study establishes a valuable new experimental paradigm towards understanding mechanisms whereby lengthened mitosis duration may explain some cases of microcephaly.Background The Unified Dyskinesia Rating Scale (UDysRS) is a well-established tool for producing comprehensive assessments of severity and disability associated with dyskinesia in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The scale was originally developed in English, and a broad international effort has been undertaken to develop and validate versions in additional languages. Our aim was to validate the Hebrew version of the UDysRS. Methods We translated the UDysRS into Hebrew, back-translated it into English, and carried out cognitive pretesting. We then administered the scale to non-demented native Hebrew-speaking patients who fulfilled the Brain Bank diagnostic criteria for probable PD (n = 250). Data were compared to the Reference Standard data used for validating UDysRS translations. Results The different portions of the Hebrew UDysRS showed high internal consistency (α ≥ 0.92). A confirmatory factor analysis in which we compared the Hebrew UDysRS to the Reference Standard version produced a comparative fit index (CFI) of 0.98, exceeding the threshold criterion of CFI > 0.9 indicating factor validity. A secondary exploratory factor analysis provided further support to the consistency between the factor structures of the Hebrew and Reference Standard versions of the UDysRS. Conclusion The UDysRS Hebrew version shows strong clinimetric properties and fulfills the criteria for designation as an official International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society-approved translation for use in clinical and research settings.0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 17 Views 0 previzualizare
