Despite the availability of different ionization sources, alternatives to classical electrospray ionization (ESI), such as atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) or photoionization (APPI), have been neglected. In particular, APPI has been described for its ionization efficiency on non-polar molecules bearing no acid or basic groups. For that reason, we investigated APPI potential to generate molecular network and compare it to ESI on several criteria that are generation of ion species, sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for different extracts rich in highly conjugated natural products. We first optimized APPI experimental conditions on crude extract from a fungus, Penicillium sclerotiorum, producing polyketones belonging to the azaphilone family. In contrast, the firstly eluted enantiomer of the same molecule exhibited the traditional convex-downward van Deemter curve. A detailed kinetic and thermodynamic investigation has revealed that this unusual phenomenon, which however has already been observed in chiral chromatography, originates when the adsorption of the compound is very strong and the solid-phase diffusion negligible. Experimentally, the intraparticle diffusion of the more retained enantiomer of the sulfoxide was found to be one order of magnitude smaller than that of the first eluted one. Overall, this translates into very little longitudinal diffusion (b-term of van Deemter curve) accompanied by high solid-liquid mass transfer resistance (c-term). The Fe3O4@SiO2-MIPs showed high adsorption capacity (3.84 mg/g) for kaempferol, and the adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 50 min. The specific recognition capacity of Fe3O4@SiO2-MIPs was 3.02 times as high as that of Fe3O4@SiO2-NIPs. The Fe3O4@SiO2-MIPs showed high selectivity towards kaempferol over structural analogues. The recoveries of proposed method at three spiked levels analysis were ranged from 90.5% to 95.4% with the relative standard deviations (RSD) less than 5%. The obtained Fe3O4@SiO2-MIPs were successfully applied for the extraction and determination of kaempferol from apple samples. The established method was simple and feasible, which showed high selectivity, fast separation and satisfactory recoveries for real sample analysis.

  • The result showed that out of 144 isolates, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae were predominant isolates with the percentage of 47.9 and 25%, respectively. The prevalence of ESBL was higher in K. pneumonia (38.9%) than E. coli (34.8%). All isolated E. coli were sensitive to nitrofurantoin and tigecycline. There was a high prevalence of MDR Enterobacteriaceae, and only one isolate was XDR, while PDR was zero for all isolated bacteria. Active antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) observation through constant data sharing and management of all stakeholders is crucial to recognize and control the AMR global burden. Also, effective antibiotic stewardship procedures would be applied to limit the unreasonable expenditure of antibiotics in Sudan.Since the spread of multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (MDRKP) strains is considered as a challenge for patients with weakened or suppressed immunity, the emergence of isolates carrying determinants of hypervirulent phenotypes in addition may become a serious problem even for healthy individuals. The aim of this study is an investigation of the nonoutbreak K. pneumoniae emergence occurred in early 2017 at a maternity hospital of Kazan, Russia. Ten bacterial isolates demonstrating multiple drug resistance phenotypes were collected from eight healthy full-term breastfed neonates, observed at the maternity hospital of Kazan, Russia. All the infants and their mothers were dismissed without symptoms or complaints, in a satisfactory condition. Whole-genome shotgun (WGS) sequencing was performed with the purpose to track down a possible spread source(s) and obtain detailed information about resistance determinants and pathogenic potential of the collected isolates. Microdilution tests have confirmed production of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) and their resistance to aminoglycoside, β-lactam, fluoroquinolone, sulfonamide, nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim, and fosfomycin antibiotics and Klebsiella phage. The WGS analysis has revealed the genes that are resistant to aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, macrolides, sulfonamides, chloramphenicols, tetracyclines, and trimethoprim and ESBL determinants. The pangenome analysis had split the isolates into two phylogenetic clades. The first group, a more heterogeneous clade, was represented by 5 isolates with 4 different in silico multilocus sequence types (MLSTs). The second group contained 5 isolates from infants born vaginally with the single MLST ST23, positive for genes corresponding to hypervirulent phenotypes yersiniabactin, aerobactin, salmochelin, colibactin, hypermucoid determinants, and specific alleles of K- and O-antigens. The source of the MDRKP spread was not defined. Infected infants have shown no developed disease symptoms.Treating infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa is challenging. In addition to its intrinsic ability to develop resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics, it also produces extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL). Saliva analysis (unstimulated saliva flow (USF), clinical saliva viscosity (CSV), and pH) and microbiological (total Streptococcus (TS) and Streptococcus of the mutans group (SMG)) tests were performed using unstimulated saliva. The data were analyzed by the Wilcoxon and Spearman Correlation tests (α = 5%). The patients were predominantly of the female sex (n = 15; 57.7%), adolescents (n = 15; 57.7%), and patients with hematological tumors (n = 21; 80.8%). SOM was more frequent in the tenth week (n = 7; 28.6%). The values of USF, CSV, pH, TS, and SMG were not changed by the institution of chemotherapy (p > 0.05).     Sialadenitis is a frequent occurrence after radioactive iodine therapy (RAI). However, reports on its predictors and risk factors in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO) are scarce.

    This study aimed to identify risk factors for early sialadenitis in patients receiving RAI for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) at the American University of Beirut Medical Center. It also aimed to determine the prevalence and characteristics of such patients receiving RAI at our institution.

    This was a retrospective study conducted at the American University of Beirut Medical Center. Medical charts were reviewed for all patients 18-79 years of age admitted to receive RAI for DTC between 01/01/2012 and 31/12/2015. Sialadenitis was deemed present if there were any records of neck swelling/pain, dry mouth, or difficulty swallowing within 48 hours of RAI administration. Characteristics between patients with sialadenitis and those without were compared to determine predictors.

The ability of ICD to elicit adaptive immunity heavily relies on the immunogenicity of dying cells, implying that such cells must encode and present antigens not covered by central tolerance (antigenicity), and deliver immunostimulatory molecules such as damage-associated molecular patterns and cytokines (adjuvanticity). Moreover, the host immune system must be equipped to detect the antigenicity and adjuvanticity of dying cells.     Gastritis is a prevalent disease and commonly classified into autoimmune (A), bacterial (B), and chemical (C) type gastritis. While the former two subtypes are associated with an increased risk of developing gastric intestinal adenocarcinoma, the latter subtype is not. In this study, we evaluated the capability to classify common gastritis subtypes using convolutional neuronal networks on a small dataset of antrum and corpus biopsies.

    1230 representative 500 × 500 µm images of 135 patients with type A, type B, and type C gastritis were extracted from scanned histological slides. Patients were allocated randomly into a training set (60%), a validation set (20%), and a test set (20%). One classifier for antrum and one classifier for corpus were trained and optimized. After optimization, the test set was analyzed using a joint result from both classifiers.

    Overall accuracy in the test set was 84% and was particularly high for type B gastritis with a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 93%.

Average Annual Percent Changes (AAPC) were calculated by the period before and after 2008. The expected rates of 2009-2016 and the observed-to-expected rate ratios (RR) were calculated. Correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were used to test the impact of socio-economic variables on health outcomes; (3) Results A reverse in downwards trends of PNM, IMR, and NNMR is observed since 2009. All observed values of 2009-2016 were found significantly higher than the expected ones by 12-34%. All indicators except SBR were found negatively correlated with GDP and DHI. A positive correlation was found between IMR, NNMR, and LBW and long-term unemployment, and no association with public health expenditure; (4) Conclusions Economic crisis was associated with remarkable adverse effects on perinatal outcomes and infant mortality, mainly determined by long-term unemployment and income reduction.   • The main aims of our research were to determine the polyphenolic profile of three fractions, coming from stages of beer production, the mashing process (must), the filtration process (prehopping solution), and the boiling process with the addition of hops (posthopping solution), and to evaluate the effects of these fractions on Dental-derived Stem Cells (D-dSCs) and human intestinal epithelial lines (Caco-2 cells). Furthermore, we underline the bioavailability of beer fraction polyphenols by carrying out the in vitro intestinal absorption using the Caco-2 cell model. We found an antioxidant, proliferating, and antisenescent effects of the fractions deriving from the brewing process on D-dSCs and Caco-2 cells.     Chronic renal artery stenosis is considered one of the most common causes of renovascular hypertension (RH). Chronic hypoxia can lead to irreversible damage to renal tissue and to a progressive deterioration of renal function. We have previously shown that bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) improved renal parenchyma and function in a model of RH (2 kidneys, 1 clip model (2K-1C) in rats. Microvesicles (MVs) and exosomes (EXs) released by **** have been shown to induce effects similar to those induced by whole cells but with fewer side effects. In this study, we compared the effects of adipose-derived **** (ASCs) with those of the MVs and EXs released by ASCs on tissue inflammation and renal function in 2 K-1C rats.

    Flow cytometry analysis showed that even after 15 days, ASCs were still detected in both kidneys. The expression of a stem cell homing marker (SDF1-

The largely nonspecific symptoms and delayed presentation pose a serious diagnostic challenge. Medical management with either anticoagulation or antiplatelet therapy is recommended, but there are no reports of successful dual therapy. We report a case of spontaneous bilateral vertebral artery dissections (VADs) treated with both anticoagulation and antiplatelet therapy and a literature review on clinical presentation and the current medical and surgical management options. A 37-year-old healthy female presented to the emergency department with worsening neck pain and headache for two weeks despite over-the-counter medication, block therapy, yoga, and deep tissue neck massage. She denied any trauma but admitted to multiple roller coaster rides over the past few months. CT angiography was concerning for VADs, and MRI brain revealed multiple strokes in the left posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) territory. Cerebral arteriography confirmed the diagnosis of VADs. The patient was initiated on warfarin, along with atorvastatin and aspirin. She was discharged home with no complications and followed up with neurology as an outpatient. MR angiography after three months revealed complete resolution of the dissection. The patient did not report any bleeding complications from dual therapy.
    T cell cytokines play important roles in the development and progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Loss of Th1/Th2 and Th17/Treg balance has been reported in several inflammatory autoimmune diseases. However, their role in RA within hitherto rare Ghanaian context has not been explored. Here, we evaluated the intracytoplasmic CD4+ T cell cytokine patterns in rheumatoid arthritis patients in Ghana and determined their relationship with disease activity.

    This case-control study included 48 newly diagnosed RA patients and 30 apparent healthy controls from two major hospitals in Ghana. Validated structured questionnaires were administered to obtain demographic data; blood samples were collected and processed for flow cytometric analysis.

    The main aims of our research were to determine the polyphenolic profile of three fractions, coming from stages of beer production, the mashing process (must), the filtration process (prehopping solution), and the boiling process with the addition of hops (posthopping solution), and to evaluate the effects of these fractions on Dental-derived Stem Cells (D-dSCs) and human intestinal epithelial lines (Caco-2 cells). Furthermore, we underline the bioavailability of beer fraction polyphenols by carrying out the in vitro intestinal absorption using the Caco-2 cell model. The largely nonspecific symptoms and delayed presentation pose a serious diagnostic challenge. Medical management with either anticoagulation or antiplatelet therapy is recommended, but there are no reports of successful dual therapy. We report a case of spontaneous bilateral vertebral artery dissections (VADs) treated with both anticoagulation and antiplatelet therapy and a literature review on clinical presentation and the current medical and surgical management options. A 37-year-old healthy female presented to the emergency department with worsening neck pain and headache for two weeks despite over-the-counter medication, block therapy, yoga, and deep tissue neck massage. She denied any trauma but admitted to multiple roller coaster rides over the past few months. CT angiography was concerning for VADs, and MRI brain revealed multiple strokes in the left posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) territory. Cerebral arteriography confirmed the diagnosis of VADs. The patient was initiated on warfarin, along with atorvastatin and aspirin. She was discharged home with no complications and followed up with neurology as an outpatient. MR angiography after three months revealed complete resolution of the dissection. The patient did not report any bleeding complications from dual therapy. T cell cytokines play important roles in the development and progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Loss of Th1/Th2 and Th17/Treg balance has been reported in several inflammatory autoimmune diseases. However, their role in RA within hitherto rare Ghanaian context has not been explored. Here, we evaluated the intracytoplasmic CD4+ T cell cytokine patterns in rheumatoid arthritis patients in Ghana and determined their relationship with disease activity. This case-control study included 48 newly diagnosed RA patients and 30 apparent healthy controls from two major hospitals in Ghana. Validated structured questionnaires were administered to obtain demographic data; blood samples were collected and processed for flow cytometric analysis. For this purpose, a total of 80 fresh water bighead carp (Aristicthys nobilis) received from commercial fish center were randomly divided and kept in four groups (A-D). Fish in groups (B-D) were exposed to different levels of BPA for a period of 60 days while fish of group A served as control group. Treated fish exhibited different physical and behavioral ailments in a time and treatment manners. Results showed significantly (p less then 0.05) increased quantity of different oxidative stress biomarkers such as thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS), reduced glutathione (GSH) and the contents of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in gills, liver, kidneys and brain of exposed fish. Concentration of different antioxidant enzymes like catalase, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and total proteins was significantly (p less then 0.05) decreased in gills, liver, kidneys and brain of exposed fish. Results showed significantly (p less then 0.05) increased frequency of morphological alterations, nuclear changes in red blood cells and increased DNA damage potential of bisphenol A in gills, liver, kidneys and brain tissues. Fixed-site measurements near an urban intersection were conducted to examine the variations in particles of various sizes through traffic signal cycles. This process aids in the identification of major PM dispersion patterns on the roadside. In addition, mobile measurements of pedestrian exposure to PM were conducted across six time intervals that correspond to different segments of a pedestrian's journey when passing through the intersection. Measurement results are used to estimate and compare the cumulative deposited doses of PM by size categories and journey segments for pedestrians at an intersection. Furthermore, comparisons of pedestrian exposure to PM on a sunny day and a cloudy day were analyzed. The distribution patterns of PAH emissions across different age groups largely reflected the time periods for constructing coal-fired units in Anhui and for the transition of small units to large ones. The accomplishment of ultralow emission technologies and phase-out of outdated coal-fired units were responsible for the decreasing trend of PAH emissions between 2012 and 2017.

  • The objective of this study is to report the clinical characteristics and treatment of patients with progressive cerebellar ataxia associated with anti-GAD antibodies. We performed a retrospective review of all patients with anti-GAD ataxia managed at the Sheffield Ataxia Centre over the last 25 years. We identified 50 patients (62% females) with anti-GAD ataxia. The prevalence was 2.5% amongst 2000 patients with progressive ataxia of various causes. Mean age at onset was 55 and mean duration 8 years. Gaze-evoked nystagmus was present in 26%, cerebellar dysarthria in 26%, limb ataxia in 44% and gait ataxia in 100%. Nine patients (18%) had severe, 12 (24%) moderate and 29 (58%) mild ataxia. Ninety percent of patients had a history of additional autoimmune diseases. Family history of autoimmune diseases was seen in 52%. Baseline MR spectroscopy of the vermis was abnormal at presentation in 72%. Thirty-five patients (70%) had serological evidence of gluten sensitivity. All 35 went on gluten-free diet (GFD). Eighteen (51%) improved, 13 (37%) stabilised, 3 have started the GFD too recently to draw conclusions and one deteriorated. Mycophenolate was used in 16 patients, 7 (44%) improved, 2 stabilised, 6 have started the medication too recently to draw conclusions and one did not tolerate the drug. There is considerable overlap between anti-GAD ataxia and gluten ataxia. For those patients with both, strict GFD alone can be an effective treatment. Patients with anti-GAD ataxia and no gluten sensitivity respond well to immunosuppression.A colorimetric paper-based sensor is proposed for the rapid monitoring of six major organophosphate and carbamate pesticides. The assay was constructed by dropping gold and silver nanoparticles on the hydrophilic zones of a paper substrate. The nanoparticles were modified by L-arginine, quercetin, and polyglutamic acid. The mechanism of sensing is based on the interaction between the pesticide and the nanoparticles. The color of nanoparticles changed during the interactions. A digital camera recorded these changes. The assay provided a unique response for each studied pesticide. This method can determine six individual pesticides including carbaryl, paraoxon, parathion, malathion, diazinon, and chlorpyrifos. The limit of detection for these pesticides were 29.0, 22.0, 32.0, 17.0, 45.0, and 36.0 ng mL-1, respectively. The assay was applied to simultaneously determine the six studied pesticides in a mixture using the partial least square method (PLS). The root mean square errors of prediction were 11, 8.7, 9.2, 10, 12, and 11 for carbaryl, paraoxon, parathion, malathion, diazinon, and chlorpyrifos, respectively. The paper-based device can differentiate two types of studied pesticide (organophosphate and carbamate) as well as two types of organophosphate structures (oxon and thion). Furthermore, this sensor showed high selectivity to the pesticides in the presence of other potential species (e.g., metal ions, anions, amino acids, sugar, and vitamins). This assay is capable of determining the pesticide compounds in tap water, apple juice, and rice samples.Graphical abstract.During a homicide investigation in which fire has been used to reduce the size of the cadaver and conceal the evidence of injuries, the identification of perimortem trauma presents a challenge, in particular in cases when the perpetrator has dismembered the body followed by burning the remains. It is therefore important to understand the effects which heat causes on fresh bone. The aim of this paper is to perform a pilot study on the survival ratio of toolmarks in different anatomical regions associated with dismemberment, and a descriptive analysis of the variables that may potentially influence the post-burning survival and detection. To achieve this, three donated embalmed cadavers were used to simulate a case in which an attempted dismemberment and burning had occurred. Fifty-five pre-burning injuries were manually induced 30 using a machete to inflict chopping trauma, and 25 with a serrated bread knife to inflict sharp force trauma, on the thigh, knee, ankle and wrist. The cadavers were cremated in a furnace at Madrid's Cementerio Sur and the burnt remains were analysed at the Laboratorio de Antropología y Odontología Forense of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Not all pre-burning injuries inflicted were visible after the cremation process; only 13% were detected in this experiment. Toolmarks can be masked, modified, destroyed or overlooked from the outset of the procedure due to several factors which influence the post-burning survival and detection of toolmarks and contribute to conceal the evidence of trauma. Additional research should be done to study further variables which affect the post-burning visibility of sharp force trauma.Flowering time has a critically important effect on the reproduction of plants, and many components involved in flowering-time regulation have been identified in multiple plant species. However, studies of the flowering-time genes in mungbean (Vigna radiata) have been limited. Here, we characterized a novel mungbean gene, VrLELP, involved in flowering-time regulation in transgenic Arabidopsis. Subcellular localization analysis revealed that VrLELP was localized in the membrane, cytoplasm and nucleus and the nucleus and membrane contained higher signal than cytoplasm, similar to the empty vector control. It is therefore important to understand the effects which heat causes on fresh bone. The aim of this paper is to perform a pilot study on the survival ratio of toolmarks in different anatomical regions associated with dismemberment, and a descriptive analysis of the variables that may potentially influence the post-burning survival and detection. To achieve this, three donated embalmed cadavers were used to simulate a case in which an attempted dismemberment and burning had occurred. Fifty-five pre-burning injuries were manually induced 30 using a machete to inflict chopping trauma, and 25 with a serrated bread knife to inflict sharp force trauma, on the thigh, knee, ankle and wrist. The cadavers were cremated in a furnace at Madrid's Cementerio Sur and the burnt remains were analysed at the Laboratorio de Antropología y Odontología Forense of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Not all pre-burning injuries inflicted were visible after the cremation process; only 13% were detected in this experiment. Toolmarks can be masked, modified, destroyed or overlooked from the outset of the procedure due to several factors which influence the post-burning survival and detection of toolmarks and contribute to conceal the evidence of trauma. Additional research should be done to study further variables which affect the post-burning visibility of sharp force trauma.Flowering time has a critically important effect on the reproduction of plants, and many components involved in flowering-time regulation have been identified in multiple plant species. Subcellular localization analysis revealed that VrLELP was localized in the membrane, cytoplasm and nucleus and the nucleus and membrane contained higher signal than cytoplasm, similar to the empty vector control.     Patients with MS have a higher rate of SD than the healthy control population, especially for the female population. There is a growing need for clinical advice on the issue of SD.In this report, we present a patient whose positive symptoms did not improve despite being treated with clozapine monotherapy at a therapeutic dose for 4 months, and whose symptoms began to resolve after aripiprazole long-acting injection adjunction to clozapine. A 22-year-old man was diagnosed as having schizophrenia last year in his first admission, with symptoms of auditory hallucinations, persecutory delusions, and associated social withdrawal. His positive symptoms did not improve despite being treated with risperidone, olanzapine, and paliperidone. Oral clozapine monotherapy was planned, and the daily dose was increased to provide a therapeutic plasma clozapine concentration and measured as effective (545 mg/dL). Aripiprazole long-acting injection 400 mg monthly was combined with the ongoing clozapine treatment for augmentation. One week after the third injection, a psychiatric examination revealed a significant improvement in the positive symptoms, and his caregivers confirmed an increase in the social interaction of the patient. Although we cannot postulate on a single exact mechanism for the increased efficacy of clozapine and aripiprazole combination, we may suggest that, at least for a subgroup of patients with schizophrenia who respond clinically to clozapine at a suboptimal level, combination with aripiprazole may be an effective therapeutic strategy.Sexual dysfunction is a common adverse effect in selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors users. Lithium is associated with teratogenic risks to the developing fetus; however, recently revised downward estimates of its teratogenic risk of causing fetal cardiac malformation suggest that its potential therapeutic benefit to both mothers with bipolar disorder and their offspring should be considered in at least some cases. A 43-year-old woman previously diagnosed with bipolar disorder and MS was treated with lithium and thyroid hormone supplementation as her sole medications during her pregnancy. The patient remained euthymic throughout her pregnancy and over the course of her 5-year follow-up evaluations on this medication regimen.     The aim of the study was to investigate the role of L-DOPA/carbidopa (CD) therapy on vitamin B6 levels in patients with Parkinson disease (PD).

    This is a cross-sectional retrospective study of vitamin B6 plasma levels in 24 patients with PD treated with L-DOPA/CD for 3 or more years, orally or intraduodenally. Vitamin B6 levels in plasma were measured by ELISA.

    All patients treated with intraduodenal L-DOPA/CD (6 of 6) and 13 of 18 patients receiving L-DOPA/CD orally had low plasma levels of vitamin B6. Eight of the 19 patients with low vitamin B6 levels had symptoms of hypovitaminosis B6. Patients with low vitamin B6 had been treated with larger doses of L-DOPA/CD, although the differences did not have statistical significance. Patients treated with intraduodenal L-DOPA/CD have vitamin B6 levels significantly lower than those treated with oral L-DOPA/CD. The variables that most correlated with vitamin B6 levels were the cumulative annual doses of CD (r = -0.36) and L-DOPA (r = -0.33) during the year preceding the study and the time to develop dyskinesias or fluctuations (r = +0.43).

    Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is an orphan disease clinically characterized by migraine, recurrent strokes, and dementia. Currently, there are no disease-modifying therapies, and it is difficult to prevent cerebral ischemic events in CADASIL patients by conventional antithrombotic medication. We hypothesized that an antimigraine agent, lomerizine hydrochloride, may prevent strokes in CADASIL patients, based on its effect on increasing cerebral blood flow.

    This was an open-labeled clinical trial in which 30 adult CADASIL patients received lomerizine at 10 mg/d. Numbers of symptomatic strokes during the 2 years after the start of lomerizine administration were compared with those in the 2 years before its initiation.   • The COVID-19 pandemic has not stopped the academic world. Since mid-March of 2020, lecturers at Universitas Indonesia have facilitated the learning process by providing teaching resources as well as guidance through teleconferencing platforms. This study shows the importance of self-tracking in academia, especially for lecturers. Our findings suggest approaches to measure lecturers' performance levels through a quiz and questions raised to understand students' behaviors.In this preliminary study, we investigate the case of COVID-19 United States confirmed cases datasets, and perform experiments with aggregations of data by county, state, and different taxonomies for U.S. regions. The overarching goals of this study is to uncover potential data quality issues due to different levels of geospatial aggregation of data.Social media has become a mainstream channel of communication during the COVID-19 pandemic. While some studies have been developed on investigating public opinion on social media data regarding COVID-19 pandemic, there is no study analyzing anti-quarantine comments on social media. This study has collected and analyzed near 80,000 tweets to understand anti-quarantine social comments. Using text mining, we found 11 topics representing different issues such as comparing COVID-19 and flu and health side effects of quarantine. We believe that this study shines a light on public opinion of people who are against quarantine.This case study aims to explore and compare two cases of virtual school programs, one asynchronized and one synchronized, regarding their pedagogical design and operationalization. Online interviews were used to examine the lived experience of people as the pandemic progressed. Areas that were explored included awareness of emerging risk, and experiences of changing conditions that impacted on working, educational, well-being and caring practices. A constructivist grounded theory frames the analysis and enables the development of themes which contribute to an emerging risk and resilience narrative. Findings from this research will provide insight into global responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, while further establishing foundational knowledge that will be useful for civil contingency, emergency services, health and education professions looking to support prepared and informed communities.As the COVID-19 pandemic has unfolded, Hate Speech on social media about China and Chinese people has encouraged social stigmatization. For the historical and humanistic purposes, this history-in-the-making needs to be archived and analyzed. Using the query "china+and+coronavirus" to scrape from the Twitter API, we have obtained 3,457,402 key tweets about China relating to COVID-19. In this archive, in which about 40% of the tweets are from the U.S., we identify 25,467 Hate Speech occurrences and analyze them according to lexicon-based emotions and demographics using machine learning and network methods. The results indicate that there are substantial associations between the amount of Hate Speech and demonstrations of sentiments, and state demographics factors. Sentiments of surprise and fear associated with poverty and unemployment rates are prominent. This digital archive and the related analyses are not simply historical, therefore. They play vital roles in raising public awareness and mitigating future crises. Consequently, we regard our research as a pilot study in methods of analysis that might be used by other researchers in various fields.ICTs are pivotal in the existing social order and especially during the COVID-19 global pandemic. This panel focuses on the use of ICTs by different actors, including individuals, nonprofit organizations, and governments around the globe in responding to this COVID crisis. We tackle three essential questions about ICTs and the global crisis. First, what role do ICTs play in a global crisis? Second, how do ICTs affect social order when tensions between control, autonomy, and power shift? Third, what are the theoretical and practical implications of ICT use during a global health crisis? Each of the panelists will discuss their ongoing research in social informatics or health informatics as relates to the panel theme and central questions in order to provide a holistic view of the role of ICTs during this global pandemic.The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of transparency, open, and timely access to information. Open Access (OA) has the potential to increase the exposure and use of not only published research but also authoritative and reliable information. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) impacted the work of journalists, scientists, and doctors while ordinary citizens are seeking trusted information sources and the truth about the new virus. Government and private institutions worldwide are reacting to the new situation where researchers, educators, students, and staff are trying to adjust to remote teaching and learning as well as telecommuting. In March 2020, a message from the White House was sent to the Scholarly Publishing Community asking them to make all COVID-19 papers openly available and machine readable. Considering the evolving and unresolved issues around OA and scholarly communications, together with the UN 2030 Agenda (a plan of action for sustainable, universal development), this panel brings together diverse perspectives to review the current landscape of OA and shed light on the role it plays in such crises. The panel will also discuss the future implications and impact of the pandemic in the overall advancement of scholarship in general.
