A research committee consisting of four focal and 16 secondary members was formed. The stages included determining the scope of the study, developing guideline (a qualitative study and a systematic review, triangulation of the data, and producing a preliminary draft), consultation stage (validation of the guideline in three rounds of the Delphi study), as well as revision and publication stages. RESULTS The clinical guideline of spiritual care with 84 evidence-based recommendations was developed in three main areas, including the human resources, care settings, and the process of spiritual care. CONCLUSIONS We are hoping by applying this clinical guideline in oncology settings to move towards an integrated spiritual care plan for cancer patients in the context of our health system. Healthcare organizations should support to form spiritual care teams under supervision of the oncology nurses with qualified healthcare providers and a trained clergy. Through holistic care, they can constantly examine the spiritual needs of cancer patients alongside their other needs by focusing on the phases of the nursing process.PURPOSE The incidence and time of onset of acute chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (ACIPN) caused by oxaliplatin remain unclarified. METHODS The study cohort comprised patients receiving oxaliplatin for CRC at our hospital between April 2017 and August 2018. Patients were instructed not to touch and/or drink cold things and were monitored for ACIPN symptoms in the hospital for 24 h after chemotherapy. ACIPN symptoms that appeared > 24 h after chemotherapy were recorded at the next visit. Symptom appearance time was defined as the duration from the administration of chemotherapy until the appearance of paresthesia classified as grade 1 using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events. RESULTS Forty-five patients received chemotherapy, comprising 23 men and 22 women, aged 67 years (29-88 years). The location of ACIPN was the fingers in 55.

  • Surfactants with their diverse activities have been recently involved in controlling the spread of new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as they are capable of disrupting the membrane surrounding the virus. Using hybrids approach, we constructed a novel series of cationic surfactant-sulfonamide conjugates (3a-g) through quaternization of the as-prepared sulfonamide derivatives (2a-g) with n-hexadecyl iodide followed by structural characterization by spectroscopy (IR and NMR). Being collective properties required in petroleum-processing environment, the petro-collecting/dispersing capacities on the surface of waters with different degrees of mineralization, and the antimicrobial performance against microbes and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) that mitigate microbiological corrosion were investigated for the synthesized conjugates. This paper presents a systematic review of a largely scattered yet quickly burgeoning body of knowledge in the policy sciences, which broadly asks what capacities engender effectiveness at the multiple levels of policy design? The findings bring to light lessons about design effectiveness at the level of formulation spaces, policy mixes and policy programs. Further, this review points to a future research agenda for design studies that is sensitive to the relative orders of policy capacity, temporality and complementarities between the various dimensions of policy capacity.This study contains synthesis, antimicrobial activity, density functional modelling and molecular docking studies of benzoxazole derivative 2-(p-chloro-benzyl)-5-[3-(4-ethly-1-piperazynl) propionamido]-benzoxazole. The synthetic procedure of investigated compound is given in detail. The newly synthesized benzoxazole compound and standard drugs were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against some Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and fungus C. albicans and their drug-resistant isolates. The benzoxazole compound has been characterized by using 1H-NMR, IR and MASS spectrometry and elemental analysis techniques. The molecular structure of the compound in the ground state has been modelling using density functional theory (DFT) with B3LYP/6-311++g(d,p) level. The molecular docking of 2-(p-chloro-benzyl)-5-[3-(4-ethly-1-piperazynl) propionamido]-benzoxazole with COVID-19 main protease has been also performed by using optimized geometry and the experimentally determined dimensional structure of the main protease (M-pro) of COVID-19.Early warning is a vital component of emergency response systems for infectious diseases. However, most early warning systems are centralized and isolated, thus there are potential risks of single evidence bias and decision-making errors. In this paper, we tackle this issue via proposing a novel framework of collaborative early warning for COVID-19 based on blockchain and smart contracts, aiming to crowdsource early warning tasks to distributed channels including medical institutions, social organizations, and even individuals. Our framework supports two surveillance modes, namely, medical federation surveillance based on federated learning and social collaboration surveillance based on the learning markets approach, and fuses their monitoring results on emerging cases to alert. By using our framework, medical institutions are expected to obtain better federated surveillance models with privacy protection, and social participants without mutual trusts can also share verified surveillance resources such as data and models, and fuse their surveillance solutions. We implemented our proposed framework based on the Ethereum and IPFS platforms. Experimental results show that our framework has advantages of decentralized decision-making, fairness, auditability, and universality. It also has potential guidance and reference value for the early warning and prevention of unknown infectious diseases.Methods for quantifying gene expression1 and chromatin accessibility2 in single cells are well established, but single-cell analysis of chromatin regions with specific histone modifications has been technically challenging. In this study, we adapted the CUT&Tag method3 to scalable nanowell and droplet-based single-cell platforms to profile chromatin landscapes in single cells (scCUT&Tag) from complex tissues and during the differentiation of human embryonic stem cells. We focused on profiling polycomb group (PcG) silenced regions marked by histone H3 Lys27 trimethylation (H3K27me3) in single cells as an orthogonal approach to chromatin accessibility for identifying cell states. We show that scCUT&Tag profiling of H3K27me3 distinguishes cell types in human blood and allows the generation of cell-type-specific PcG landscapes from heterogeneous tissues. Furthermore, we used scCUT&Tag to profile H3K27me3 in a patient with a brain tumor before and after treatment, identifying cell types in the tumor microenvironment and heterogeneity in PcG activity in the primary sample and after treatment.

The unique room-temperature NO2 sensing under visible light emanates from the localized surface plasmonic resonance effect of Au nanoparticles, thereby enabling the design of new transparent oxide-based gas sensors without external heaters or light sources. The patterning of nanofibers with extremely low coverage provides a general strategy to design diverse compositions of gas sensors, which can facilitate the development of a wide range of new applications in transparent electronics and smart windows wirelessly connected to the Internet of Things.In this work, by combining the superiority of polyoxometalates (POMs) and catalytic single-metal site Co of metalloporphyrin, a series of mixed-valence POM-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) composites is synthesized by a post-modification method.     Different root modifiers have been proposed in the literature with an attempt to improve the healing process and the success rate of root coverage procedures. The aim of the present retrospective study was to evaluate the effect of three different types of root surface conditioning, namely, tetracycline (TTC), ethylene-di-amino-tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) and saline, on the outcome of root coverage procedures applying the same surgical technique.

    Twenty-nine patients with 60 Classes I, II, or III recession defects were treated using connective tissue with a partial-thickness double-pedicle graft. In 21 recession defects root surface was treated with TTC and, in other 21, with EDTA, while in the remaining, saline solution was applied. Statistical analysis consisted of descriptive statistics and Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, and chi-square tests.

    Differences between pre- and postoperative values were statistically significant only within but not between groups. Mean root coverage was 73.25%, 69.19%, and 82.17% in the TTC, the EDTA, and the saline groups, respectively. The study revealed no statistically significant differences for all evaluated parameters between groups.

    Within the limits of this study, root conditioning, prior to root coverage procedures, does not significantly affect their outcome.

By using two different short cations to compete with the large spacer cation, the phase composition can be continuously tailored from thin multiple quantum wells (MQWs) dominated to 3D perovskite dominated. The phase ordering can be reversed from small n phases' prior to large n phases' prior near the substrate. Finally, with the same amount of large spacer cation protection, the perovskite can be tailored for both high-performance electroluminescence and photovoltaics with favorable energetic landscape for the corresponding desired first-order excitonic recombination and second-order free electron-hole recombination, respectively.

  • BACKGROUND As the use of intramedullary nails (IMNs) has become more common, there are an increasing number of patients requiring total knee arthroplasty (TKA) who have an indwelling tibial IMN. The purpose of this study is to compare implant survivorship, clinical outcomes, and complications in patients undergoing primary TKA with a history of tibial IMN to those without. METHODS We retrospectively identified 24 TKAs performed between 2000 and 2017 after ipsilateral tibial IMN. Patients were matched 12 to patients undergoing primary TKA without history of tibial IMN based upon age, gender, body mass index, and year of surgery. Mean follow-up was 7 years. RESULTS The 10-year survivorship free of any revision was 100% for the tibial IMN cohort, and 96% for the control cohort, while the 10-year survivorship free of any reoperation was 91% and 89%, respectively (P = .72). Patients with a history of tibial IMN had similar Knee Society Scores to matched controls at 2 years (P = .77) and 5 years (P = .09). Acquired idiopathic stiffness trended toward being more common (17% vs 6%, P = .21) and operative time trended toward being longer (135 vs 118 min, P = .07) when the tibial IMN was removed, but there was no overall difference in complication rate between cohorts. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/uamc-3203.html CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, this is the first report of primary TKA in patients with a history of ipsilateral tibial IMN. METHODS Between 2002 and 2016, 165 patients (165 hips) who had a hip infection during childhood were treated with THAs with cementless implants. The average duration of follow-up was 93.5 months (range 26-206). Clinical results were evaluated via the Harris Hip Score and radiographic results were analyzed with postoperative serial X-rays. RESULTS The average Harris Hip Score increased from 27 (range 8-53) before surgery to 91 (range 45-100) at the latest follow-up examination (P less then .001). At the latest follow-up evaluation, 9 cementless acetabular components demonstrated partial, nonprogressive radiolucencies. No subsidence of more than 2 mm or evidence of a radiolucent line was observed around the femoral components. Intraoperative periprosthetic fractures occurred in 11 hips, including 3 acetabular fractures, 2 fractures of greater trochanter, 1 femoral shaft fracture, and 5 fractures of femoral calcar. Postoperative complications included 3 cases of periprosthetic infection, 1 episode of dislocation, 1 case of a femoral periprosthetic fracture, 5 cases of sciatic nerve injury, 1 case of femoral nerve injury, and 1 case of squeaking from a ceramic bearing surface. CONCLUSION Cementless THA for adult patients with sequelae from childhood hip infection presents significant technical challenges and a relatively high complication rate. With meticulous surgical planning and anticipation for the key technical challenges frequently encountered, the medium-term clinical and radiographic results of THA in this setting were good with high implant survivorship and patient satisfaction. We sought to determine if this RAT is associated with the need for post-acute care (PAC) services defined as inpatient rehabilitation and skilled nursing facility, home health, and none (home) following total joint arthroplasty. METHODS The study sample comprised of a total of 1438 primary TJA patients included in a bundled payment model. The RAT score, which ranges from 0 to 100, with higher scores representing healthier, more independent patents, was the key independent variable and post-acute service was the primary outcome variable. RESULTS The median RAT score was 83 (interquartile range 78-87.5) for no PAC discharges compared to 74 (interquartile range 67-81) for inpatient PAC discharges (P less then .0001). After adjusting for the effects of length of hospital stay, surgery type, and patient gender, there was 6× increased odds of inpatient PAC for higher risk patients compared to low risk patients. A RAT score of 74 predicts discharges without PAC 87% of the time. CONCLUSION The RAT that is based on psychosocial, cognitive, environmental factors, and health status was significantly associated with the need for PAC services. The next step is to build and validate a real time, risk adjustment model to assist physicians and patients with planning post-discharge resources. Human walking consists of two major sequential events (i.e., single- and double-support phases). Although there have been many studies relating to basic principles of the each stage, how the two distinct but continuous phases interact with each other remains to be clarified. We examined the change in walking strategy with varying walking speed on a local reference frame with telescoping and tangential axes; we expect that the telescoping directional dynamics at the end of a single-support phase change with walking speed to facilitate the modulation of the push-off work during a double-support phase. The telescoping directional force and power are calculated using two methods model simulation and kinematic configuration. The empirical walking data for eight healthy young subjects and the corresponding model parameters obtained from a data-fit optimization were used to investigate the changing trend of each factor (i.e., force and power) with the increase in speed. The resulting force at the end of the single-support phase significantly increased with the walking speed for both methods, whereas the resulting power remained nearly unchanged and was close to zero for the entire range of walking speeds. This result implies that the positive amount of the telescoping directional force at the end of the single-support phase may be a certain type of preparation for the double-support phase, which can contribute to a larger push-off.

In this study, synthetic arsenic-contaminated water was prepared in the laboratory with varying concentrations of arsenic (100 to 1000 μg/L) and treated by nanosize adsorbent (copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs)). The colloidal and powder form of CuO NPs were synthesized in the laboratory by the hydrothermal technique on a large scale and their shape and size were confirmed by XRD, FTIR, FESEM, and HRTEM analysis. It was found 30 ± 2 nm as size and spherical shape. The equilibrium adsorption of As (III) occurred at 90 min of contact time, pH 7.5, and 4 g/L adsorbent dosage. The maximum percent removal of As (III) was reached to 97.8, 94.6, 91.5, and 88.4% at an initial arsenic concentration of 100, 200, 500, and 1000 μg/L, respectively. The adsorption of As (III) followed pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm model. Moreover, the overall cost of the synthesized CuO NPs (including material, operational, manpower, and transport cost with other overhead charges) was Rs. 281.832 g-1, which is lesser than the market price (Rs. 500.018 g-1). Hence, the optimized adsorption design would help for the efficient removal of As (III) from aqueous medium.
    Bioaerosols play an important role in incidence of infections in indoor and outdoor air of hospitals. Microorganisms
    human beings and they are found everywhere in the environment, including different wards of a hospital. So, quantitative and qualitative analysis of microorganisms is highly important in hospital air. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diversity and density of bacteria and fungi in the air of Shohadaye Mehrab Hospital in Yazd City, Iran.

    Sampling was performed using a single-stage pump (Quick Take30) at a flow rate of 28.3l per minute for five minutes. As a result, 288 indoor and outdoor hospital air samples were collected. Numbers and types of bacterial and fungal colonies were identified using colony morphology, gram staining, and standard microbial tests. Chi-square test, PCA and linear mixed model were run by SPSS version 24.0 for data analysis.

This study presents new methods for the identification of outlier data and smoothing as an effective pre-processing technique prito to modelling. This new data processing method uses a combination of the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model and -the adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system with fuzzy C-means clustering (FCM) (ANFIS-FCM). These new pre-processing methodsare compared to previously employed non-linear approaches for modelling of wastewater influent/effluent 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total suspended solids (TSS). Linear modelling of each parameter, 242 linear models, were investigated, and a linear model for each parameter was selected. The results of the non-linear models led to an acceptable prediction for qualitative parameters so that the high coefficient of determination (R 2 ) was observed for the influent and effluent BOD and TSS, respectively. The range of the R 2 for all models was recorded as 0.8-0.87 and 0.83-0.89, respectively. By a combination of the linear and non-linear mothods a hybrid model was introduced. The proposed hybrid model for the influent BOD with the highest correlation between the observed and predicted values, and limited scattering was identified as the optimal model (R2 = 0.95). The use of hybrid models to predict wastewater quality parameters improved the performance and efficiency of the models. The colloidal and powder form of CuO NPs were synthesized in the laboratory by the hydrothermal technique on a large scale and their shape and size were confirmed by XRD, FTIR, FESEM, and HRTEM analysis. It was found 30 ± 2 nm as size and spherical shape. The equilibrium adsorption of As (III) occurred at 90 min of contact time, pH 7.5, and 4 g/L adsorbent dosage. The maximum percent removal of As (III) was reached to 97.8, 94.6, 91.5, and 88.4% at an initial arsenic concentration of 100, 200, 500, and 1000 μg/L, respectively. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diversity and density of bacteria and fungi in the air of Shohadaye Mehrab Hospital in Yazd City, Iran. Sampling was performed using a single-stage pump (Quick Take30) at a flow rate of 28.3l per minute for five minutes. As a result, 288 indoor and outdoor hospital air samples were collected. Numbers and types of bacterial and fungal colonies were identified using colony morphology, gram staining, and standard microbial tests. Chi-square test, PCA and linear mixed model were run by SPSS version 24.0 for data analysis. Linear modelling of each parameter, 242 linear models, were investigated, and a linear model for each parameter was selected. The range of the R 2 for all models was recorded as 0.8-0.87 and 0.83-0.89, respectively. By a combination of the linear and non-linear mothods a hybrid model was introduced. The proposed hybrid model for the influent BOD with the highest correlation between the observed and predicted values, and limited scattering was identified as the optimal model (R2 = 0.95). The use of hybrid models to predict wastewater quality parameters improved the performance and efficiency of the models.     To assess the efficiency of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) and photobiomodulation (PBM) interventions in accelerating orthodontic tooth movement during clear aligner therapy (CAT).

    This retrospective study was carried out on the records of 84 subjects who were treated using CAT. Twenty-eight patients were treated using CAT with a daily use of LIPUS for 20 minutes, 28 patients were treated using CAT with a daily use of PBM for 10 minutes, and 28 patients were treated using CAT alone. The total duration of treatment was recorded for all patients. One-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey test were used to assess whether there was any significant difference in total treatment duration among the three groups (P < .05).

    The mean treatment durations in days were 719 ± 220, 533 ± 242, and 528 ± 323 for the control, LIPUS, and PBM groups, respectively. All prevalence ratios (PRs) were compared with large MSAs and adjusted for demographics and risk factors. The PRs of hypertension were 1.07 (95% CI= 0.99-1.14) for adults residing in medium to small MSAs and 1.06 (95% CI=0.99- 1.13) for adults residing in non-MSAs, For stage II hypertension, the PRs were higher for adults residing in medium to small MSAs 1.21 (95% CI =1.06-1.36) but not for adults residing in non-MSAs 1.06 (95% CI= 0.88-1.29). One-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey test were used to assess whether there was any significant difference in total treatment duration among the three groups (P < .05). The mean treatment durations in days were 719 ± 220, 533 ± 242, and 528 ± 323 for the control, LIPUS, and PBM groups, respectively. The LIPUS group showed a 26% reduction, on average, in treatment duration when compared with the control group, whereas the PBM group showed an average 26.6% reduction in the treatment duration when compared with the control group. A two-dose Ad26.COV2.S regimen induced higher peak binding and neutralizing antibody responses compared with a single dose. In one-dose regimens, neutralizing antibody responses were stable for at least 14 wk, providing an early indication of durability. Ad26.COV2.S induced humoral immunity and T helper cell (Th cell) 1-skewed cellular responses in aged NHPs that were comparable to those in adult animals. Currently available risk assessment tools and analytical instrumentation were found to be lacking the risk preparedness and characterization readiness for active nanomaterials, respectively. Limited prior data suggest that preexisting liver disease is associated with adverse outcomes among patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) is a noninvasive index of readily available laboratory measurements that represents hepatic fibrosis. We evaluated the association between FIB-4 at the early stage of infection and COVID-19 outcomes. FIB-4 was evaluated at admission in a cohort of 267 patients admitted with early-stage COVID-19 confirmed through reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction assay. Hazard of ventilator use and of high-flow oxygen was estimated using Cox regression models controlled for covariates. Risks of progression to severe disease and of death/prolonged hospitalization were estimated using multivariable logistic regression models. Forty-one (15%) patients progressed to severe disease, 36 (14%) required high-flow oxygen support, 10 (4%) required mechanical ventilator support, and 1 died.   • We propose a homomorphic search protocol based on quantum homomorphic encryption, in which a client Alice with limited quantum ability can give her encrypted data to a powerful but untrusted quantum server and let the server search for her without decryption. By outsourcing the interactive key-update process to a trusted key center, Alice only needs to prepare and encrypt her original data and to decrypt the ciphered search result in linear time. Besides, we also present a compact and perfectly secure quantum homomorphic evaluation protocol for Clifford circuits, where the decryption key can be calculated by Alice with polynomial overhead with respect to the key length.Flowing plasma jets are increasingly investigated and used for surface treatments, including biological matter, and as soft ionization sources for mass spectrometry. They have the characteristic capability to transport energy from the plasma excitation region to the flowing afterglow, and therefore to a distant application surface, in a controlled manner. The ability to transport and deposit energy into a specimen is related to the actual energy transport mechanism. In case of a flowing helium plasma, the energy in the flowing afterglow may be carried by metastable helium atoms and long-lived helium dimer ions. In this work a systematic investigation of the optical and spectroscopic characteristics of a supersonic flowing helium plasma in vacuum and its afterglow as function of the helium gas density is presented. The concentrations of trace metals and THCs in the tissues were subjected to principal component analysis (PCA), in conjunction with hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), backed up by correlation analysis (CA). High capture rates suggest high abundances of all species. The relative numbers of each species collected changed over the years and differed seasonally, reflecting targeting by Ionides. Sex ratios and age-class distributions differed among species and were affected by factors such as month of collection and time of day. Habitat use was affected by species, sex and body size for example, arboreality became less common with increasing body size in the rhinoceros viper and black mamba, and males were found in arboreal sites more often than were females. In both D. jamesoni and D. polylepis, adult males and females were recorded together in September-October, suggesting reproductive activity at this time of year. The proposed Fredkin gate consists of a photonic system (single photon) and quantum dots (QDs) confined in single-sided cavities (two electron spin states). In our scheme, the control qubit is the polarization state of the single photon, and two electron spin states in QDs play the role of target qubits (swapped states by control qubit). The interaction between a photon and an electron of QD within the cavity (QD-cavity system) significantly affects the performance of Fredkin gate. Thus, through the analysis of the QD-cavity system under vacuum noise and sideband leakage, we demonstrate that reliable interaction and performance of the QD-cavity system with photonic state (photon) can be acquired in our scheme. Consequently, the Fredkin gate proposed in this paper can be experimentally implemented with high feasibility and efficiency.

    There is limited Canadian evidence on the impact of socio-environmental factors on psychosis risk. We sought to examine the relationship between area-level indicators of marginalization and the incidence of psychotic disorders in Ontario.

    We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all people aged 14 to 40 years living in Ontario in 1999 using health administrative data and identified incident cases of psychotic disorders over a 10-year follow-up period. Age-standardized incidence rates were estimated for census metropolitan areas (CMAs). Poisson regression models adjusting for age and sex were used to calculate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) based on CMA and area-level marginalization indices.

    There is variation in the incidence of psychotic disorders across the CMAs. Our findings suggest a higher rate of psychotic disorders in areas with the highest levels of residential instability (IRR = 1.26, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.18 to 1.35), material deprivation (IRR = 1.30, 95% CI, 1.16 to 1.45), ethnicorders, and marginalization attenuates the differences in risk across geographic location. With further study, replication, and the use of the most up-to-date data, a case may be made to consider social policy interventions as preventative measures and to direct services to areas with the highest risk. Future research should examine how marginalization may interact with other social factors including ethnicity and immigration.

    Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings are believed to be associated with low **** pain (LBP). This study sought to develop a new predictive classification system for low **** pain.

    Normal subjects with repeated lumbar MRI scans were retrospectively enrolled. A new classification system, based on the radiological features on MRI, was developed using an unsupervised clustering method.

    One hundred and fifty-nine subjects were included. Three distinguishable clusters were identified with unsupervised clustering that were significantly correlated with LBP (

Here, we present a set of simulation frameworks that explore the use of DMDs in conjunction with coherent light sources, motivated by their application in SIM, but which are generalizable to other light patterning applications. This framework provides all the tools to explore and compute DMD-based diffraction effects and to simulate possible system alignment configurations computationally, which simplifies the system design process and provides guidance for setting up DMD-based microscopes. The configuration termed as laser-free super-resolution microscopy (LFSM) is an extension of single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) techniques and allows single molecules to be switched on and off (a phenomenon termed as 'blinking'), detected and localized. The use of a short burst of deep blue excitation (350-380 nm) can be further used to reactivate the blinking, once the blinking process has slowed or stopped. A resolution of 90 nm is achieved on test specimens (mouse and amphibian meiotic chromosomes). Finally, we demonstrate that stimulated emission depletion and LFSM can be performed on the same biological sample using a simple commercial mounting medium. It is hoped that this type of correlative imaging will provide a basis for a further enhanced resolution. This special issue aims to recap recent developments as well as outline future trends. In addition to SIM, we cover related topics such as complementary super-resolution microscopy techniques, computational imaging, visualization and image processing methods. This article is part of the Theo Murphy meeting issue 'Super-resolution structured illumination microscopy (part 1)'.We report that high-density single-molecule super-resolution microscopy can be achieved with a conventional epifluorescence microscope set-up and a mercury arc lamp. The configuration termed as laser-free super-resolution microscopy (LFSM) is an extension of single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) techniques and allows single molecules to be switched on and off (a phenomenon termed as 'blinking'), detected and localized. The use of a short burst of deep blue excitation (350-380 nm) can be further used to reactivate the blinking, once the blinking process has slowed or stopped. A resolution of 90 nm is achieved on test specimens (mouse and amphibian meiotic chromosomes). Finally, we demonstrate that stimulated emission depletion and LFSM can be performed on the same biological sample using a simple commercial mounting medium. It is hoped that this type of correlative imaging will provide a basis for a further enhanced resolution.   • Our work expands the repertoire of model systems to study dynamic aspects of the notochord in vivo, and provides new insights in its development and regeneration properties. New drugs for the treatment of human leishmaniasis are urgently needed, considering the limitations of current available options. However, pre-clinical evaluation of drug candidates for leishmaniasis is challenging. The use of luciferase-expressing parasites for parasite load detection is a potentially powerful tool to accelerate the drug discovery process. We have previously described the use of Leishmania amazonensis mutants expressing firefly luciferase (Luc2) for drug testing. Here, we describe three new mutant L. amazonensis lines that express different variants of luciferases NanoLuc, NanoLuc-PEST and RedLuc. We investigated potential routes of mosquito-borne virus exchange between urban and sylvatic transmission cycles by characterizing mosquito communities in three urban forest parks that receive heavy traffic from both humans and monkeys in Manaus, Brazil. Parks were stratified by both distance from the urban-forest edge (0, 50, 100, and 500 m) and relative Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) (low, medium, or high), and mosquitoes were sampled at randomly selected sites within each stratum using BG-Sentinel traps. Additionally, temperature, relative humidity, and other environmental data were collected at each site. A total of 1,172 mosquitoes were collected from 184 sites sampled in 2018, of which 98 sites were resampled in 2019. Between July 2018 to June 2019, blood samples from 184 male and female camels (Camelus dromedarius) were collected from 3 regions of South-East Algeria and serum samples were tested for antibodies against Coxiella burnetii using indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. The positive sera and a total of 60 ticks were tested by quantitative PCR (qPCR) for detection of C. burnetii with primers and probes specific to the transposon-like repetitive region (IS1111 gene). Positive samples were genotyped by amplification and sequencing of partial sequences based on the IS1111 gene. The seroprevalence of antibodies against C. burnetii was 75.5%. Statistical analysis pointed out three potential risk factors associated with Q fever infection geographic location, age class and season. No positive DNA of camel blood sample was observed. However, five Hyalomma dromedarii, one H. impeltatum and one H. excavatum tick species were detected positive for Coxiella burnetii DNA by qPCR, with an overall prevalence rate of 11.66% (7/60). The revealed Algerian strains by phylogenetic and comparative analysis of the IS1111 nucleotide sequences were clustered with several pathogenic C. burnetii strains isolated from ticks, human, and cattle located in Tunisia, Greece and in some Mediterranean countries, respectively. The study results clearly indicate that camels and their ticks in Algeria may play an important role as a reservoir for C. burnetii and can be considered as a significant source of Q fever transmission to other animal species and humans. INTRODUCTION The work has been reported in line with the SCARE criteria. Thoracoabdominal impalement injuries are uncommon and very few cases have been reported. Impalement injuries result when a rigid object penetrates and remains lodged within the body. It has complex anesthetic and surgical management. We describe the successful surgical and anesthetic management of a major impalement injury of the torso. CASE REPORT A 21-year old male construction worker brought to emergency with two iron construction rods impaled in torso due to fall from 2nd floor while working. Both were 1 m long and 12 mm in diameter. One had penetrated from right anterior axillary fold, deep to pectoralis major, exiting from left sternal border. Second entered below the tip of right scapula and exiting from left of xiphoid process. ATLS protocols were followed and patient resuscitated, immediately shifted to operating room, intubated in semi left lateral position. Rod impacted in right pectoral area was superficial with no injury to ribs or pleural space. Other was removed through laparotomy, thoracotomy and Hepatotomy, as it had pierced diaphragm and liver. Post-operative recovery was uneventful. DISCUSSION Resuscitation and close monitoring prior to and during surgery are vital with anticipation of major organ and vascular injuries. Hypovolemia should be corrected in the OR. Progressive dyspneacan be the most important symptom in patients with penetrating chest injury. CONCLUSION Penetrating abdominothoracic injuries demand immediate life-saving measures, appropriate resuscitative care, urgent shifting of patient to tertiary care center, prompt diagnosis and immediate surgical intervention. Regulation of safety rules at construction site and early intervention in case of accidents can improve the patient outcome and minimize mortality.

  • Quantitative analysis of the concentration of excess molybdenum, estimated with secondary ion mass spectroscopy, is commensurate to the additional heat capacity needed to explain the anomalous time response of the detectors.The aim of this study was to examine the association among representations of the COVID-19 pandemic, self-efficacy to cope with the anti-pandemic measures (e.g., general lockdown), and psychological distress in the Greek general population. The study was conducted online, during the general lockdown in the country, and 358 individuals (239 females) participated (mean age = 36.89; SD = 12.15). A perception of personal control over the condition, negative emotions towards the pandemic, and self-efficacy to cope with the current anti-pandemic measures were related to psychological distress. Also, a significant interaction between representation clusters and self-efficacy to cope with potential future difficulties (i.e., after the anti-pandemic measures are ended), was found. Specifically, the association between this type of self-efficacy and psychological distress was significant only for the 'low-impact' representations cluster (i.e., a perception of the pandemic as less burdensome and more controllable). The findings indicate that the factors which, according to previous research and theory, are significantly related to psychological distress during a health threat, are important also in times of a pandemic. They also suggest a potential adaptation-promoting synergy between pandemic-related self-efficacy and a more positive representation of COVID-19, as far as psychological distress is conerned. Thus, these factors may serve as the basis for the development of pandemic-related health behavior promotion programs.The coronavirus pandemic has caused unemployment to skyrocket, exposed the longstanding inequalities in health care services and working conditions, and mainly affected the poor in different parts of the world. The findings showed that stronger identification with all humanity, higher awareness of socio-economic status-based privilege, and less endorsement of classist attitudes predict more support for socio-economic equality policies in the post-pandemic period, after controlling for socio-demographic and socio-political characteristics of participants. Study 2 (N = 212) replicated the findings in a different context, namely the U.S. Our findings extend previous studies by showing the importance of a global identity, such as shared human identity, in the ongoing and potentially in the aftermath of the pandemic. In addition, our findings highlight the joint contributions of socio-economic factors such as classist attitudes and awareness of class-based privilege to the support for socio-economic policies.Mental health problems like anxiety, depression, and stress have been increasing in many countries and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated their toll. Mindfulness-based interventions have been shown to provide evidence-based treatments for anxiety and depression, and accumulating evidence is emerging in support of using mindfulness apps yielding small-to-moderate treatment effects. The study was a 4-week randomized controlled trial with 561 university students and staff as participants, divided into a treatment group (mindfulness app) and an active control group (psychoeducational online content). Depression, anxiety, and stress were evaluated as primary study outcomes. Saliva cortisol samples were also collected from a subgroup of the treatment arm (n = 29). Using the mindfulness app for four weeks resulted in small reductions in stress (d = .16), and depression (d = .16). Attrition was 28.0%. Subjects who practiced more did not experience additional improvement in wellbeing. Mindfulness apps offer modest but clear benefits to users in terms of improved mental health. They present a promising supplement to traditional mental health services.Triboelectric energy harvesting is a relatively new technology showing promise for biomedical applications. This study investigates a triboelectric energy transducer for potential applications in total knee replacement (TKR) both as an energy harvester and a sensor. The sensor can be used to monitor loads at the knee joint. The proposed transducer generates an electrical signal that is directly related to the periodic mechanical load from walking. The proportionality between the generated electrical signal and the load transferred to the knee enables triboelectric transducers to be used as self-powered active load sensors. We analyzed the performance of a triboelectric transducer when subjected to simulated gait loading on a joint motion simulator. Two different designs were evaluated, one made of Titanium on Aluminum, (Ti-PDMS-Al), and the other made of Titanium on Titanium, (Ti-PDMS-Ti). The Ti-PDMS-Ti design generates more power than Ti-PDMS-Al and was used to optimize the structural parameters. Our analysis found these optimal parameters for the Ti-PDMS-Ti design external resistance of 304 MΩ, a gap of 550 μm, and a thickness of the triboelectric layer of 50 μm. Those parameters were optimized by varying resistance, gap, and the thickness while measuring the power outputs. Using the optimized parameters, the transducer was tested under different axial loads to check the viability of the harvester to act as a self-powered load sensor to estimate the knee loads. The forces transmitted across the knee joint during activities of daily living can be directly measured and used for self-powering, which can lead to improving the total knee implant functions.
