    Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) has been demonstrated to be effective in body weight control in individuals with obesity. Most clinical trials on rTMS provided a reassuring safety profile. In the present work, we present an extensive analysis on both severe and mild Adverse Events (AEs) in obese individuals treated with rTMS.

    We examined the intensity, duration, correlation with the treatment, up to 1 year after the end of rTMS treatment.

We aimed to evaluate the incidence and risk factors of umbilical TSH after laparoscopic TAPP hernioplasty in patients with and without an associated umbilical hernia.

    A retrospective analysis of a prospectively collected database of all patients who underwent laparoscopic inguinal TAPP repair during 2013-2018 was performed. After TAPP repair, the umbilical fascia was closed either by a figure-of-eight stitch with absorbable suture (G1) or by umbilical hernioplasty if it was present (G2). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the TSH risk factors. Comparative evaluation regarding demographics, and operative and postoperative variables was performed.

    A total of 535 laparoscopic TAPP repairs were included. There were 359 (67.1%) patients in G1 and 176 in G2 (32.9%). Surgical site infection was higher in G2 (G1 0.6% vs G2 5.7%, p = 0.001). Overall TSH rate was 3.9% after a mean follow-up of 20 (12-41) months. Performing a concomitant umbilical repair significantly increased the risk of umbilical TSH (G1 2.2% vs G2 7.4%, p = 0.004). TSH rates in G2 were similar in patients with simple suture or mesh repairs (p = 0.88). Rectus abdominis diastasis (OR 37.8, 95% CI8.22-174.0, p < 0.001) and inguinal recurrence (OR 13.5, 95% CI2.04-89.5, p = 0.007) were independent risk factors for TSH.

  • Purpose To report the effects of a single intravitreous injection of bevacizumab for the treatment of secondary choroideal neovascularisation due to large optic disc drusen. Methods A 14-year-old female patient with painless loss of vision in one eye presented with unusually large optic disc drusen and juxtapapillary choroidal neovascularisation with subretinal hemorrhage. She was treated with a single intravitreous injection of bevacizumab. Results Visual acuity increased from 20/100 to 20/25 within 4 weeks after injection and remained at this level during the 12-month follow-up period. Conclusions Bevacizumab is a possible primary treatment option for secondary choroidal neovascularisation due to large optic disc drusen in children as an alternative to other more invasive or complex procedures.Wooden foreign bodies penetrating through the orbit into paranasal sinuses are rare. We report a case of a young male who complained of double vision, pain and redness after a fall from a tree. There was no external wound over periocular skin. The clinical and radiological examination was suggestive of an inferior orbito-sinal wooden foreign body with floor fracture, which was managed by surgical removal of the foreign body and orbital floor fracture repair using a silicon sheet in a single sitting.Purpose To present a 65-year-old patient with macular hole (MH) and submacular hemorrhage (SMH) secondary to a ruptured retinal arterial macroaneurysm (RAM) which was successfully treated with a novel surgical technique. Patient A 65-year-old woman presented with a 1-week history of sudden-onset visual loss in her right eye. Her best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was hand motion in the right eye. Her fundus examination revealed intraretinal and massive subretinal hemorrhage with macular involvement. An MH with an approximate diameter of 600 microns was also noted. The patient was treated by a standard pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling, followed by 10 µg recombinant tissue plasminogen activator injection into the submacular space via the MH with a 25-gauge vitrectomy probe. BCVA of the patient increased to 20/320 and 20/60, one and four weeks after surgery, respectively. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) images confirmed the complete anatomical closure of the MH and the restoration of the outer retinal layers such as the external limiting membrane and the ellipsoid zone. Conclusion This case report expands our knowledge about the management of MH in combination with SMH after a ruptured RAM. We suggest the use of a vitrectomy probe and MH for subretinal recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) injection.Objective To emphasize the importance of an early diagnosis and an adequate treatment in conjunctival tumors. However, when the diagnosis of CIN is late, the epithelial basement membrane will be affected, resulting in SCC. SCC may have poorer results due to its capacity to infiltrate near tissues and create distant metastasis. Conclusion It is not common today to treat patients with orbital extension of SCC; however, it is crucial to note the importance of an early diagnosis of conjunctival malignancies.   • Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are known to transport DNA, but their implications in embryonic implantation are unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate EVs production and secretion by preimplantation embryos and assess their DNA cargo. Murine oocytes and embryos were obtained from six- to eight-week-old females, cultured until E4.5 and analyzed using transmission electron microscopy to examine EVs production. EVs were isolated from E4.5-day conditioned media and quantified by nanoparticle tracking analysis, characterized by immunogold, and their DNA cargo sequenced. Multivesicular bodies were observed in murine oocytes and preimplantation embryos together with the secretion of EVs to the blastocoel cavity and blastocyst spent medium. The introductionof SDN provides a global view of network topology and centralized control, which enables a stable transmission layer connection when a handover takes place, so that the upper layer performance isnot influenced by the network changes. By employing ****server, the data are cached in advance before a handover happens, so that the vehicle can restore normal communication faster.     Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are known to transport DNA, but their implications in embryonic implantation are unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate EVs production and secretion by preimplantation embryos and assess their DNA cargo. Murine oocytes and embryos were obtained from six- to eight-week-old females, cultured until E4.5 and analyzed using transmission electron microscopy to examine EVs production. EVs were isolated from E4.5-day conditioned media and quantified by nanoparticle tracking analysis, characterized by immunogold, and their DNA cargo sequenced. Multivesicular bodies were observed in murine oocytes and preimplantation embryos together with the secretion of EVs to the blastocoel cavity and blastocyst spent medium.   • In order to gain further insight into the pathogenesis and transmission of ovine neosporosis, the serological response of 13 naturally infected pregnant sheep was monitored. All sheep were euthanized upon the detection of a sharp increase in the level of specific antibodies against N. caninum in order to study the maternal immune response after the recrudescence of a chronic infection. Ten sheep were euthanized between 84 and 118 days of gestation, whereas the three remaining and three control not infected, pregnant sheep were euthanized at 135 days of gestation after no sharp increase in antibodies was detected. Vertical transmission was confirmed in 11 sheep by detection of N. caninum-DNA in at least one fetus, confirming recrudescence. Not all of fetuses showed pathologic microscopic lesions, however, multifocal non-purulent encephalitis was the main finding. Furthermore, nine out of the 11 vertical transmission positive sheep had lesions in placentomes (mainly multifocal necrotic foci), and the parasite was a consequence, between protection against vertical transmission of the parasite and a milder maternal serological response together with a high level of transcription of IL-17 in the placenta.Duckweed is a potential biomass source for alternative energy production. This work reports the effects of trophic modes on growth rates, biomass accumulation, and removal rates of pollutant by duckweed. Glucose, fructose, galactose, sucrose, and maltose all supported heterotrophic and mixotrophic growth of duckweed. The mixotrophic growth rate was 4.98 and 6.22 times higher than those in heterotrophic and photoautotrophic conditions, respectively. Among these methods, adsorption approach is one of the most efficient techniques for the elimination of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. There are a number of low cost absorbent such as agricultural and industrial solid waste such as lingo-cellulosic materials, wheat bran, peanut shell, moss peat, fly ash, bagasse, tree fern, gram husk, nanostructures (such as TiO2, SiO2, SnO2, ZnO, etc.), 3D porous structures (aerogels), etc. which have been developed and tested to efficient removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater. In this study, a critical review of the applications of aerogels in water and sewage purifications is performed. For this reason, different kinds of aerogel namely organic, inorganic and organic-inorganic hybrid aerogels are investigated. It is concluded that the most applicable aerogels used in these studies are graphene-based aerogels due to more porous structure as well as simplification of their modification. Also, in this review paper, for the first time we summarized and highlighted the recent literature information about heavy metal ions and theirs removal methods from aqueous pollutants and wastewater/water, adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics models by different type of three dimensional (3D) porous structure. In additional, in this review article, the influence of various parameters such as pH solution, temperature, initial concentration of heavy metal ions, composition, contact time, coexisting ions and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption process of heavy metal ions were investigated.This historical perspective overviews the dispersion stability and rheological properties of fumed and colloidal silica suspensions in aqueous solutions as a function of the volume fraction of silica (Ï•) (where Ï• is ≤0.1). The silica suspensions exist in a gel state at lower Ï• in acidic conditions than at alkaline pH. The steady-state shear viscosities of silica suspensions at acid conditions exhibit shear thinning behavior at lower Ï• than in alkaline conditions; the magnitudes of the dynamic moduli of the silica suspensions at acidic pH are larger than those at alkaline pH. Changes in the dispersion stability and rheological behavior of the silica suspensions may be attributable to the addition of salt, which decreases electrostatic repulsion. Furthermore, the effects of polymer adsorption on the dispersion stability and rheological behavior of hydrophilic or hydrophobic silica suspensions are discussed.
    The aim of this study was to construct a gene co-expression network to identify key modules and genes in people with generalized aggressive periodontitis.

    We used database GSE79705 to construct a co-expression network by weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). In addition, Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis were conducted.

    A total of 51 co-expression modules were conducted, darkseagreen1 and blue1 modules were the most significantly related to generalized aggressive periodontitis. Genes in the darkseagreen1 module enriched in affecting cellular response to tumor necrosis factor and vascular endothelial growth factor production, and the blue1 module enriched in the regulation of ion transport, proteinaceous extracellular matrix and neuropeptide binding. Besides, we found that 4 hub genes (SNRPG, MRPL22, MRPS18C and CEP290) played an important role in the occurrence of generalized aggressive periodontitis.

    Through this study, we identified two modules and four hub genes associated with generalized aggressive periodontitis.

  • Cancer seems to have an independent adverse prognostic effect on COVID-19-related mortality, but uncertainty exists regarding its effect across different patient subgroups. We report a population-based analysis of patients hospitalised with COVID-19 with prior or current solid cancer versus those without cancer.

    We analysed data of adult patients registered until 24 May 2020 in the Belgian nationwide database of Sciensano. The primary objective was in-hospital mortality within 30 days of COVID-19 diagnosis among patients with solid cancer versus patients without cancer. Severe event occurrence, a composite of intensive care unit admission, invasive ventilation and/or death, was a secondary objective. These endpoints were analysed across different patient subgroups. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to analyse the association between cancer and clinical characteristics (baseline analysis) and the effect of cancer on in-hospital mortality and on severe event occurrence, adjusting for clinicidities. Patients with solid cancer should be prioritised in vaccination campaigns and in tailored containment measurements.

    Clinical and research utility of non-cardiac ultrasound (US) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been widely investigated. However, there is no systematic review assessing the clinical values of non-cardiac US techniques in COPD.

    We systematically searched electronic databases from inception to 24 June 2020. Two independent reviewers in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines extracted data. A narrative synthesis of the results was conducted considering non-cardiac US techniques that looked for diaphragm, muscles and bones in patients with COPD.

    In total, 2573 abstracts were screened, and 94 full-text papers were reviewed. A total of 54 studies met the inclusion criteria. Thirty-five studies assessed the diaphragm, while 19 studies evaluated different muscles, including limb muscles and pulmonary lesions in COPD using US. Of the 54 included studies, 30% (16/54) evaluated the changes in either limb muscles or diaphragmatic features before and after physical interventions; 67% (36/54) assessed the correlations between sonographic features and COPD severity.

We report a population-based analysis of patients hospitalised with COVID-19 with prior or current solid cancer versus those without cancer. The primary objective was in-hospital mortality within 30 days of COVID-19 diagnosis among patients with solid cancer versus patients without cancer. Surgical resection is sometimes necessary to treat this neoplasm. We report a method for performing minimally invasive gastrectomy with preservation of the proximal residual stomach through laparotomy for cancer in the distal side of gastric conduit after Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy. Furthermore, Roux-en-Y reconstruction was performed after gastrectomy. This minimally invasive partial gastrectomy for early gastric conduit cancer and followed Roux-en-Y reconstruction may lead to a favorable clinical outcome.URG-4/URGCP is a gene that may be associated with the onset of tumorigenesis and cell cycle regulation.     To analyse the frequency of power Doppler (PD) enthesitis in active axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients and its potential usefulness in clinical practice.

    A prospective multicentre cross-sectional study in patients with axSpA and PsA with active disease was undertaken. Patients underwent bilateral ultrasound (US) examination of the peripheral entheses according to the Madrid Sonographic Enthesis Index (MASEI). The MASEI and Outcome Measures in Rheumatology (OMERACT) PD enthesitis definitions were checked. An inter-reader analysis of recorded videos was performed to determine reliability.

    Sixty-four consecutive patients were included. The mean DAS28 (3.9 ± 1.3) for peripheral involvement, mean BASDAI (5.6 ± 2.2) for axial involvement, and CRP values (10 ± 10.9) reflected moderate-high disease activity at baseline. The mean global MASEI score was 29.4 (± 11.4), and 55 patients (86%) scored ≥ 18 (proposed cut-off point to diagnose SpA). At the patient level, abnormal US fD definitions were useful in detecting active enthesitis. These findings support the usefulness of a PD US evaluation of entheses in the assessment of axSpA and PsA. To analyse the frequency of power Doppler (PD) enthesitis in active axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients and its potential usefulness in clinical practice. A prospective multicentre cross-sectional study in patients with axSpA and PsA with active disease was undertaken. Patients underwent bilateral ultrasound (US) examination of the peripheral entheses according to the Madrid Sonographic Enthesis Index (MASEI). The MASEI and Outcome Measures in Rheumatology (OMERACT) PD enthesitis definitions were checked. An inter-reader analysis of recorded videos was performed to determine reliability. Sixty-four consecutive patients were included. The mean DAS28 (3.9 ± 1.3) for peripheral involvement, mean BASDAI (5.6 ± 2.2) for axial involvement, and CRP values (10 ± 10.9) reflected moderate-high disease activity at baseline. The mean global MASEI score was 29.4 (± 11.4), and 55 patients (86%) scored ≥ 18 (proposed cut-off point to diagnose SpA). At the patient level, abnormal US fD definitions were useful in detecting active enthesitis. These findings support the usefulness of a PD US evaluation of entheses in the assessment of axSpA and PsA. Overall, if biopsies would have been performed only in men with an mpMRI suspicious for malignancy between 7.4% and 58.5% of the biopsies could have been avoided, but 2.3%-36% of any PCa and 0%-30.8% of csPCa would have been missed. The sensitivity, specificity, positive LR, and negative LR ofmpMRIfor any PCa detection were 0.86 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.78-0.91), 0.67 (95% CI, 0.40-0.86), 2.6 (95% CI, 1.2-5.5), and 0.2 (95% CI, 0.12-0.32), respectively. The AUC for any PCa detection was 0.84 (95% CI, 0.75-0.90). The pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive LR, and negative LR ofmpMRIfor csPCa detection was 0.94 (95% CI, 0.83-0.98), 0.54 (95% CI, 0.42-0.65), 2 (95% CI, 1.5-2.7), and 0.1 (95% CI, 0.02-0.35), respectively. The aim of this study was to construct phylogenetic trees based on the structural polyprotein and non-structural RNA dependent RNA polymerase gene regions and to make a molecular characterization of the Tur/***/Sac01 and Tur/***/Sac02 strains identified in Apis mellifera in Turkey. As a result of the study, the tree based on the structural polyprotein region separated into four lineages Tur/***/Sac01 and Tur/***/Sac02 were in the same branch as the Turkish sacbrood virus strains identified in previous studies and formed the Turkish clade. Strains isolated from adjacent geographical areas were in the same clade in this tree. The phylogenetic tree based on the non-structural RNA dependent RNA polymerase gene region divides into two main branches, reflecting host affiliation Apis cerana and A. mellifera. Strains formed clusters based on their geographic distribution and host affiliation. The Tur/***/Sac01 and Tur/***/Sac02 strains formed a separate cluster among the European strains.     The MRI-assessed tumor regression grade (mrTRG) is limited due to its subjectivity and poor consistency on pathological tumor regression grade (pTRG). A new MRI criterion was established to predict the prognosis of locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC).

    The new MRI criterion magnetic resonance imaging tumor response score (mrTRS) was based on the retrospective sample of 214 LARC patients (unpublished data). Subsequently, 878 LARC patients were enrolled for a prospective, multicenter study. Baseline and postoperative MRI were obtained, and imaging features were measured by collecting the pathological, clinical and follow-up data. Kaplan-Meier method with log-rank estimate and multivariate cox regression model was used to determine the prognosis of mrTRS in LARC patients with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NACRT). The predictive capability of 3-year prognosis between mrTRS and mrTRG was determined by time-dependent ROC curves.

    The results demonstrated that mrTRS acted as an independent predictor of survival outcomes. mrTRS stratified by good and moderate responders showed significantly lower risk of death (HR=0.04, 95%CI 0.01-0.31; HR=0.35, 95%CI 0.23-0.52), distant metastasis (HR=0.25, 95%CI 0.13-0.52; HR=0.42, 95%CI 0.30-0.58), and local recurrence when compared with poor responders(HR=0.01 95%CI 0.23-0.52;HR=0.38, 95%CI 0.16-0.90). In contrast, no significant difference was observed among mrTRG stratified groups. Excellent and substantial interobserver agreement for mrTRS and mrTRG evaluation was observed (κ=0.92 and 0.62), respectively.

    Radiation-related heart disease (RRHD) can occur many decades after thoracic radiotherapy for Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) or childhood cancer (CC). To quantify the likely risk of RRHD for patients treated today, dose-response relationships derived from patients treated in previous decades are used. Publications presenting these dose-response relationships usually include estimates of uncertainties in the risks but ignore the effect of uncertainties in the reconstructed cardiac doses.

    We assessed the systematic and random uncertainties in the reconstructed doses for published dose-response relationships for RRHD risk in survivors of HL or CC. Using the same reconstruction methods as were used in the original publications, we reconstructed mean heart doses and, wherever possible, mean left-ventricular doses for an independent case-series of test patients. These patients had known, CT-based, cardiac doses which were compared with the reconstructed doses to estimate the magnitude of the uncertainties and their effect on the dose-response relationships.

  • Prior research has examined consumer willingness to fly in a variety of situations, including during disease outbreaks. However, to date, no study that we know of has identified what type of person is willing to fly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Six hundred and thirty-two participants from the United States were asked to complete a survey designed to capture demographics, personality measures, emotional states and travel purposes. The data were collected in two stages in order to both develop a descriptive regression equation and a predictive model.

    Regression equations were created for both business and pleasure travel, and the following predictors were significant for both scenarios perceived threat from COVID-19, agreeableness, affect, and fear. These models accounted for 66-67% of the variance in willingness to fly.

    Airlines and governments could use these findings to help control the message to potential passengers on actions being taken to provide a safe flying experience, such as mask wearing policies and aircraft disinfectant procedures.

Most of the participants were university-educated women. The themes demonstrate the power of neoliberal discourses in framing parenting. Parenting during a pandemic, especially mothering, is constructed as an overwhelming project that requires detailed organization and management. There is also resistance to neoliberal governmentality through redefining successful parenthood. Furthermore, the gendered nature of domestic work is questioned, especially the traditional, inactive father who prioritizes his own needs only to fail comically in the domestic sphere. The study contributes to our understanding of gendered parenthood in neoliberal, pandemic times.This article is a personal reflection of how the coronavirus exposes 'shocking' levels of racism against us, and our vulnerability as Chinese women living in Britain. By reflecting our experiences of verbal and physical race-based violence connected to coronavirus, we explore the fluidity of our racial identities, the taken-for-granted racial stereotypes and white privilege, and everyday racism in the UK. Can the vulnerable use vulnerability as an agent to shift the moment of helplessness? We contribute to the uncomfortable yet important debate on racism against Chinese women living in the UK through voicing up our embodied vulnerability as invisible and disempowered subjects to this viral anti-Chinese racism. This is a form of resistance where we care for the racialised and marginalised others. In doing so, we lift the painted veil of pandemic, race and racism to collectively combat racial inequalities.COVID-19 affects women in ways unique to the impacts of structural inequalities related to gender, sexuality, disability, race, and socioeconomic status. In this article, we reflect on our own experiences of the pandemic, as feminist students, workers, and sexual assault resistance educators located in a Canadian post-secondary setting. Situating ourselves within feminist responses to sexual violence prevention, as facilitators of the EAAA sexual assault resistance education program for university women, we reflect on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on our work as EAAA facilitators in our Canadian university. We explore the theoretical possibilities that critical disability theory and queer theory present to the EAAA program, and argue that incorporating concepts from these frameworks will complement the goals of the EAAA program and improve inclusivity of queer, trans, and disabled participants. We conclude with a look into the future by anticipating the impacts of COVID-19 on our future work.COVID-19 and the associated lockdowns meant many working parents were faced with doing paid work and family care at home simultaneously. To investigate how they managed, this paper draws a subsample of parents in dual earner couples (n=1,536) from a national survey of 2,722 Australian men and women conducted during lockdown in May 2020. It asked how **** time respondents spent in paid and unpaid labour, including both active and supervisory care, and about their satisfaction with work-family balance and how their partner shared the load. Overall, paid work time was slightly lower, and unpaid work time was very **** higher, during lockdown than before it. These time changes were most for mothers, but gender gaps somewhat narrowed because the relative increase in childcare was higher for fathers. More mothers than fathers were dissatisfied with their work-family balance and partner's share before COVID-19. For some the pandemic improved satisfaction levels, but for most they became worse. Again, some gender differences narrowed, mainly because more fathers also felt negatively during lockdown than they had before.School and daycare closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic have increased caregiving responsibilities for working parents. As a result, many have changed their work hours to meet these growing demands. In this study, we use panel data from the U.S. Current Population Survey to examine changes in mothers' and fathers' work hours from February through April, 2020, the period of time prior to the widespread COVID-19 outbreak in the U.S. and through its first peak. Using person-level fixed effects models, we find that mothers with young children have reduced their work hours four to five times more than fathers. Consequently, the gender gap in work hours has grown by 20 to 50 percent. These findings indicate yet another negative consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the challenges it poses to women's work hours and employment.

We explore the theoretical possibilities that critical disability theory and queer theory present to the EAAA program, and argue that incorporating concepts from these frameworks will complement the goals of the EAAA program and improve inclusivity of queer, trans, and disabled participants. We conclude with a look into the future by anticipating the impacts of COVID-19 on our future work.COVID-19 and the associated lockdowns meant many working parents were faced with doing paid work and family care at home simultaneously. To investigate how they managed, this paper draws a subsample of parents in dual earner couples (n=1,536) from a national survey of 2,722 Australian men and women conducted during lockdown in May 2020. It asked how much time respondents spent in paid and unpaid labour, including both active and supervisory care, and about their satisfaction with work-family balance and how their partner shared the load. Overall, paid work time was slightly lower, and unpaid work time was very much higher, during lockdown than before it. These time changes were most for mothers, but gender gaps somewhat narrowed because the relative increase in childcare was higher for fathers. More mothers than fathers were dissatisfied with their work-family balance and partner's share before COVID-19. For some the pandemic improved satisfaction levels, but for most they became worse. Again, some gender differences narrowed, mainly because more fathers also felt negatively during lockdown than they had before.School and daycare closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic have increased caregiving responsibilities for working parents. As a result, many have changed their work hours to meet these growing demands. In this study, we use panel data from the U.S. Current Population Survey to examine changes in mothers' and fathers' work hours from February through April, 2020, the period of time prior to the widespread COVID-19 outbreak in the U.S. and through its first peak. Using person-level fixed effects models, we find that mothers with young children have reduced their work hours four to five times more than fathers. Consequently, the gender gap in work hours has grown by 20 to 50 percent. These findings indicate yet another negative consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the challenges it poses to women's work hours and employment.

The aim of this retrospective study was to analyse the failure rate after osteosynthesis of proximal humeral fractures over a year in a level-1 trauma centre. Furthermore, parameters that are presumed to be related to osteosynthesis failure will be investigated and discussed. METHODS After meeting the exclusion criteria, 134 patients were operatively treated with angular stable osteosynthesis between January 2017 and January 2018 at the University Hospitals of Leuven. RESULTS Circa 16% of the proximal humeral osteosyntheses failed. Our study showed that the most significant parameter for osteosynthesis failure was smoking. The odds of failure were significantly lower if treated by a shoulder surgeon compared to another trauma surgeon in the plate and nail group combined. CONCLUSION The management of proximal humeral fracture osteosynthesis remains a controversial subject. In this retrospective analysis, a failure rate of 15.7% was calculated. Smoking is a statistically significant parameter related to osteosynthesis failure. The subspecialty of the treating trauma surgeon affected the failure rate significantly. A lower failure rate was noted after osteosynthesis by a shoulder surgeon compared to another trauma surgeon.PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the necessity of achieving acceptable radiographic alignment by preoperative closed reduction in unstable distal radius fractures (DRFs) to improve preoperative pain and obtain satisfactory outcomes after surgery. Patients were classified into acceptable and non-acceptable reduction groups based on immediate post-reduction radiographs. To avoid potential bias, a matched-pair analysis was performed, and paired patients were categorized into non-acceptable reduction (group A) and acceptable reduction (group B) groups. Preoperative pain level, mean length of stay, operation time, postoperative complications, and surgical outcomes were analysed. The preoperative pain level and functional results were assessed by the visual analogue scale (VAS) and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) scores. RESULTS Of the 239 patients, 80 had non-acceptable and 159 had acceptable reductions.

In the present study, we tested whether it is possible to improve rhythmic voluntary sway persistency in old age by actively tracking the complex (i.e. persistent) motion of a visual target. Twenty healthy young and 20 older adults performed 132 cycles of anterior-posterior sway under two conditions a) self-paced sway and b) sway while tracking the vertical motion of a complex visual target. The persistency of sway cycle amplitude and duration, detected from the center of pressure displacement, was quantified using the Fractal exponent α. We also recorded body kinematics in order to assess the intersegmental coordination that was quantified in the Mean Absolute Relative Phase (MARP) and the Deviation Phase (DPh) between the trunk and the lower limbs. In self-paced sway, older adults showed a lower persistency of cycle duration and a higher MARP and DPh between the trunk and the lower limbs compared to young adults. Tracking the complex visual target motion increased the persistency of cycle amplitude, in young but not in older adults, when compared to the self-paced sway while it decreased the persistency of cycle duration in both groups. The G273R mutation increases the aggregation propensity of 4-repeat (4R) tau and alters the tau binding affinity towards microtubules (MTs) and F-actin. Tau aggregates in PSP and CBD are predominantly 4R tau. Our data suggest that the G273R mutation induces a shift in pool of 4R tau by lower F-actin affinity, alters the conformation of MT bound 4R tau, while increasing chaperoning of 3R tau by binding stronger to F-actin. The mutation augmented fibrillation of 4R tau initiation in vitro and in glial cells in Drosophila and showed preferential seeding of 4R tau in vitro suggestively causing a late onset 4R tauopathy reminiscent of PSP and CBD.
    Inflammasome-mediated neuroinflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of early brain injury (EBI) following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The activation of the TGR5 receptor has been shown to be neuroprotective in a variety of neurological diseases. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the specific synthetic TGR5 agonist, INT-777, in attenuating NLRP3-ASC inflammasome activation and reducing neuroinflammation after SAH.

    One hundred and eighty-four male Sprague Dawley rats were used. SAH was induced by the endovascular perforation. INT-777 was administered intranasally at 1h after SAH induction. To elucidate the signaling pathway involved in the effect of INT-777 on inflammasome activation during EBI, TGR5 knockout CRISPR and PKA inhibitor H89 were administered intracerebroventricularly and intraperitoneally at 48h and 1h before SAH. The SAH grade, short- and long-term neurobehavioral assessments, brain water content, western blot, immunofluorescence staining, and Nissl staining wertially via TGR5/cAMP/PKA signaling pathway. Early administration of INT-777 may serve as a potential therapeutic strategy for EBI management in the setting of SAH.Since the first descriptions of hepatocyte-released exosome-like vesicles in 2008, the number of publications describing Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) released by liver cells in the context of hepatic physiology and pathology has grown exponentially. This growing interest highlights both the importance that cell-to-cell communication has in the organization of multicellular organisms from a physiological point of view, as well as the opportunity that these circulating organelles offer in diagnostics and therapeutics. In the present review, we summarize systematically and comprehensively the myriad of works that appeared in the last decade and lighted the discussion about the best opportunities for using EVs in liver disease therapeutics.

This growing interest highlights both the importance that cell-to-cell communication has in the organization of multicellular organisms from a physiological point of view, as well as the opportunity that these circulating organelles offer in diagnostics and therapeutics. In the present review, we summarize systematically and comprehensively the myriad of works that appeared in the last decade and lighted the discussion about the best opportunities for using EVs in liver disease therapeutics.
