Superoxide dismutases (SODs) are the first line of defense against oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species and are associated with stress tolerance. Accordingly, many studies have focused on SODs, especially those from extreme habitats. In this study, we reported a novel Cu,Zn-*** from the new species Benthodytes marianensis sp. nov (hereafter denoted as Bm-Cu,Zn-***) collected from the Mariana Trench. The purified recombinant enzyme with an approx. Mr. of 38 kDa was intracellular and dimeric, and it expressed activity at an optimal temperature of 30 °C and optimum pH of 7.4. The Km and Vmax values of Bm-Cu,Zn-*** were 0.046 ± 0.004 mM and 1209.151 ± 24.057 U/mg, respectively. Under the tested conditions, Bm-Cu,Zn-*** resisted interference from chemicals (β-mercaptoethanol and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid), denaturants (urea and guanidine hydrochloride), and high salinity, showing high kinetic stability. Furthermore, Bm-Cu,Zn-*** could be activated by high hydrostatic pressure. All these properties suggested adaptation to the deep-sea environment and thus indicated its potential future applications.In this study, inhibitory kinetics of Nuciferine and Methyl Ganoderate extrated from Lotus Leaves and Ganoderma lucidum on Mucor miehei Lipase were studied first. The molecular structure of Nuciferine and Methyl Ganoderate were determined. The inhibitory effects of two extracts on lipase were reversible, with the IC50 values of 0.194 and 0.332 mg/mL, respectively. The inhibition kinetic analysis by Lineweaver-Burk plots showed that they were a mixed-type inhibitor of lipase, with inhibition constants KI of 0.16 and 0.29 mg/mL, and KIS of 0.36 and 0.49 mg/mL, respectively. Results of spectral analysis showed that the UV absorption and the molecule fluorescence spectrum of the lipase hydrolyzate were significantly decreased after the inhibitor was added. The molecular docking further suggested that the interaction site between the active substance and inhibitor was located in an α-helix and a β-sheet of the lipase, and the lipase active site was interfered by the inhibitor near the cap structure. In addition, the proliferation and differentiation of 3 T3-L1 preadipocytes were inhibited by two extracts. Total triglycerides and cholesterol were significantly reduced in the cells. A linear relationship between the time at the maximum rate of fluorescence change and L-Arg concentrations, which ranged from 2.5 to 100 μM, was found with R2 = 0.9988. The measurement time was within 0.15-4 min. Determination of L-Arg concentration in fetal bovine serum could be achieved by the standard addition method and without sample pre-treatment. The CMC/PVA solutions with 90/10, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40 and 50/50 ratios were considered for electrospinning. Two integration methods were studied for loading FFA on the nanofibers during the electrospinning process. The characterization techniques of SEM, AFM, fluorescence microscopy and FT-IR spectroscopy were used to study the produced nanofibers, indicating a uniform distribution of FFA throughout the samples. The resulting nanofibers were formed in a diameter range of 176-285 nm and exhibited a 5 h degradation time in the PBS buffer solution. A standard diagram of drug loading was obtained for the samples. The drug release pattern was examined using a dialysis tube method. UV-visible spectroscopy revealed a time-dependent drug release behavior in CMC/PVA/FFA nanofibers where a sharp release occurred over the first 20 min.

We evaluated changes in mood state before and after the experiment. NIRS was measured in each participant while they listened to their peers in the experimental condition (gratitude letter) and control condition (talking about the weather and date). The results suggested that negative mood state decreased after the experiment. Moreover, there were interaction effects between conditions and periods. Although further studies are needed to confirm the interpretation, our findings suggested that experience of being thanked was accompanied by prefrontal cortex activation.
Concerns over the safety of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use during severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection have been raised. We studied whether use of NSAIDs was associated with adverse outcomes and mortality during SARS-CoV-2 infection.
We conducted a population-based cohort study using Danish administrative and health registries. We included individuals who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 during the period 27 February 2020 to 29 April 2020. NSAID users (defined as individuals having filled a prescription for NSAIDs up to 30 days before the SARS-CoV-2 test) were matched to up to 4 non-users on calendar week of the test date and propensity scores based on age, sex, relevant comorbidities, and use of selected prescription drugs. The main outcome was 30-day mortality, and NSAID users were compared to non-users using risk ratios (RRs) and risk differences (RDs). Secondary outcomes included hospitalization, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, mechanical ventilatcontinuously, and possible residual confounding by indication, as NSAIDs may generally be prescribed to healthier individuals due to their side effects, but on the other hand may also be prescribed for early symptoms of severe COVID-19.
Use of NSAIDs was not associated with 30-day mortality, hospitalization, ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, or renal replacement therapy in Danish individuals who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2.

Millions of people have undergone direct-to-consumer genetic testing (DTC-GT), but little is known about individuals' motivations and experiences (e.g., discussion topics and emotions after obtaining the test results) in engaging with DTC-GT services. Previous studies either involved only a small number of DTC-GT consumers or were based on hypothetical scenarios.
Our study aimed to fill this gap by investigating online discussions about DTC-GT that developed naturally among tens of thousands of social media users.
We focused on the posts that were published in the r/23andme and r/AncestryDNA subreddits, which correspond to the two companies with the largest number of consumers in the DTC-GT market. We applied computational methods to infer and examine the topics discussed, temporal trends in posting rates and themes (e.g., aggregation of related topics), and emotions expressed in these online forums.
We collected 157,000 posts published by 16,500 Reddit users between 2013 and 2019. We found that the pnd that future investigations should consider how DTC-GT challenges our understanding of kinship structure and function, genomic privacy, and the interpretation of health risks.
This research demonstrates that online social media platforms can serve as a rich resource for characterizing actual DTC-GT experiences. The findings suggest that DTC-GT consumers' purchasing behaviors are associated with societal events and that future investigations should consider how DTC-GT challenges our understanding of kinship structure and function, genomic privacy, and the interpretation of health risks.
Schistosomiasis is a chronic parasitic disease, that affects over 207 million people and causes over 200,000 deaths annually, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. Although many health measures have been carried out to limit parasite transmission, significant numbers of non-human primates such as Chlorocebus aethiops (Ch. aethiops) (vervet) and Papio anubis (baboon) are infected with S. mansoni, notably in Ethiopia, where they are expected to have potentially significant implications for transmission and control efforts.
The objective of this study was to assess and compare the genetic diversity and population structure of S. mansoni isolates from human and non-human primates free-ranging in close proximity to villages in selected endemic areas of Ethiopia.
A cross-sectional study was conducted in three transmission sites Bochesa, Kime and Fincha. A total of 2,356 S. mansoni miracidia were directly isolated from fecal specimens of 104 hosts (i.e. 60 human hosts and 44 non-human primates). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ms-275.html We performed DNA extra-human primates likely play a role in local transmission and maintenance of infection. Occurrence of infection of a single host with multiple S. mansoni strains and inter- and intra-host genetic variations was observed. Substantial genetic diversity and gene flow across the S. mansoni population occurred at each site and non-human primates likely play a role in local transmission and maintenance of infection. Therefore, public health and wildlife professionals should work together to improve disease control and elimination strategies.Learning to avoid harmful consequences can be a costly trial-and-error process. In such situations, social information can be leveraged to improve individual learning outcomes. Here, we investigated how participants used their own experiences and others' social cues to avoid harm. Participants made repeated choices between harmful and safe options, each with different probabilities of generating shocks, while also seeing the image of a social partner. Some partners made predictive gaze cues towards the harmful choice option while others cued an option at random, and did so using neutral or fearful facial expressions. We tested how learned social information about partner reliability transferred across contexts by letting participants encounter the same partner in multiple trial blocks while facing novel choice options. Participants' decisions were best explained by a reinforcement learning model that independently learned the probabilities of options being safe and of partners being reliable and combined these combined these estimates to generate choices.

Trafficking of photoreceptor membrane proteins from their site of synthesis in the inner segment (IS) to the outer segment (OS) is critical for photoreceptor function and vision. Here we evaluate the role of syntaxin 3 (STX3), in trafficking of OS membrane proteins such as peripherin 2 (PRPH2) and rhodopsin. Photoreceptor-specific Stx3 knockouts [Stx3 f/f(iCre75) and Stx3 f/f(CRX-Cre) ] exhibited rapid, early-onset photoreceptor degeneration and functional decline characterized by structural defects in IS, OS, and synaptic terminals. https://www.selleckchem.com/ Critically, in the absence of STX3, OS proteins such as PRPH2, the PRPH2 binding partner, rod outer segment membrane protein 1 (ROM1), and rhodopsin were mislocalized along the microtubules to the IS, cell body, and synaptic region. Here we used a diet-induced murine model of T2D to investigate the underlying mechanisms of TB/T2D comorbidity and to evaluate the protective capacity of two experimental TB vaccines in comparison to conventional BCG. Using modeled global warming stabilization scenarios (from 1.5 to 6 °C warming), we project that the current sink of atmospheric C (0.10 ± 0.02 Pg C⋅y-1) in northern peatlands will shift to a C source as 0.8 to 1.9 million km2 of permafrost-affected peatlands thaw. The projected thaw would cause peatland greenhouse gas emissions equal to ∼1% of anthropogenic radiative forcing in this century. The main forcing is from methane emissions (0.7 to 3 Pg cumulative CH4-C) with smaller carbon dioxide forcing (1 to 2 Pg CO2-C) and minor nitrous oxide losses. We project that initial CO2-C losses reverse after ∼200 y, as warming strengthens peatland C-sinks. Trafficking of photoreceptor membrane proteins from their site of synthesis in the inner segment (IS) to the outer segment (OS) is critical for photoreceptor function and vision. Here we evaluate the role of syntaxin 3 (STX3), in trafficking of OS membrane proteins such as peripherin 2 (PRPH2) and rhodopsin. Photoreceptor-specific Stx3 knockouts [Stx3 f/f(iCre75) and Stx3 f/f(CRX-Cre) ] exhibited rapid, early-onset photoreceptor degeneration and functional decline characterized by structural defects in IS, OS, and synaptic terminals. https://www.selleckchem.com/ Critically, in the absence of STX3, OS proteins such as PRPH2, the PRPH2 binding partner, rod outer segment membrane protein 1 (ROM1), and rhodopsin were mislocalized along the microtubules to the IS, cell body, and synaptic region. The etiologic agent SARS-CoV-2 has caused the outbreak of COVID-19 which is spread widely around the world. It is vital to uncover and investigate the full genome sequence of SARS-CoV-2 throughout the world to track changes in this virus. To this purpose, SARS-CoV-2 full genome sequence profiling of 20 patients in Iran and different countries that already had a travel history to Iran or contacts with Iranian cases were provided from the GISAID database. The bioinformatics analysis showed 44 different nucleotide mutations that caused 26 nonsynonymous mutations in protein sequences with regard to the reference full genome of the SARS-CoV-2 sequence (NC_045512.2). R207C, V378I, M2796I, L3606F, and A6407V in ORF1ab were common mutations in these sequences. Also, some of the detected mutations only were found in Iranian data in comparison with all the available sequences of SARS-CoV-2. The position of S protein mutations showed they were far from the binding site of this protein with angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) as the host cell receptor. These results can be helpful to design specific diagnostic tests, trace the SARS-CoV-2 sequence changes in Iran, and explore therapeutic drugs and vaccines.

Exposure to 10 mT and 15 mT electromagnetic field increased the expression of

Recent studies have further revealed an unexpected oncogenic activity of PLK4 in regulating cancer cell migration and invasion. Our previous work demonstrated that an intact CEP85-STIL binding interface is necessary for robust PLK4 activation and centriole duplication. Here we show that CEP85 and STIL are also required for directional cancer cell migration. Mutational and functional analyses reveal that the interactions between CEP85, STIL and PLK4 are essential for effective directional cell motility. Mechanistically, we show that PLK4 can drive the recruitment of CEP85 and STIL at the leading edge of cells to promote protrusive activity, and that downregulation of CEP85 and STIL leads to a reduction in ARP2 phosphorylation and reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton, which in turn impairs cell migration. The efficacy of transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block compared with thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) in abdominal surgery has been controversial. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to assess outcomes of TAP block and TEA in a procedure-specific manner in colorectal surgery.
A systematic literature search of the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases was conducted through July 10, 2020, to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing TAP block with TEA in colorectal surgery. Primary outcomes were pain scores at rest and movement at 24h postoperatively. Secondary outcomes included postoperative pain scores at 0-2 and 48h, opioid consumption, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), functional recovery, hospital stay, and adverse events.
Six RCTs with 568 patients were included. Methodological quality of these RCTs ranged from moderate to high. TAP block provided comparable pain control, lower 24h and total opioid consumption, shorter time to ambulation and urinary catheter time, and lower incidence of sensory disturbance and postoperative hypotension compared with TEA. Meanwhile, the 48-h opioid consumption, PONV incidence, and hospital stay were similar between groups. When laparoscopic surgery was the only surgical approach employed, TAP block provided additional benefits of shorter time to first flatus and lower incidence of PONV compared with TEA.

However, other types of boats, such as the felucca, use different biomechanical techniques, which have not been studied in the scientific literature. Consequently, in this study, we sought to determine the benefits of felucca rowing on the physical, psychological, and emotional well-being of patients with ** and healthy persons.
A pre- and post-intervention, single-arm study without a control group with a 4-month intervention was carried out in Spain in 2019. The study sample included six women with ** and 15 healthy women. The following questionnaires were administered before and after the intervention Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH), Constant-Murley score (CMS), and the European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions (EQ-5D, rate your health today). Differences were determined before and after the intervention using the paired t test.
Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found in the results of all the questionnaires for the women with ** and for the healthy women DASH (- 13.8 ** and - 6.7 healthy), CMS (+ 12.0 ** and 9.2 healthy), and EQ-5D (+ 8.5 ** and 10.5 healthy).

The aim of the present study was to investigate the validity and reliability of the deep lateral femoral notch sign (DLFNS) in identifying a concomitant anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)/anterolateral ligament (ALL) rupture and predicting the clinical outcomes following an anatomical single-bundle ACL reconstruction. It was hypothesized that patients with a concomitant ACL/ALL rupture would have an increased DLFNS compared to patients without a concomitant ACL/ALL rupture.
The lateral preoperative radiographs and MRI images of 100 patients with an ACL rupture and 100 control subjects were evaluated for the presence of a DLFNS and ACL/ALL rupture, respectively. The patients were evaluated clinically preoperatively and at a minimum 1 year following the ACL reconstruction. Lymphoma of the nervous system is rare and usually involves the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves. Hence, it has varied clinical presentations, and correct diagnosis is often challenging. Incorrect diagnosis delays the appropriate treatment and affects prognosis. We report 5 patients with delayed diagnosis of lymphoma involving the central and/or peripheral nervous system, initially evaluated for other neurological diagnoses. We also discuss the challenge of diagnosis and appropriate testing.

We present 5 adult patients initially evaluated for inflammatory myelopathy, inflammatory lumbosacral plexopathy, atypical parkinsonism, and demyelinating disease of the CNS. Final diagnosis of the nervous system lymphoma was delayed by 4 to 18 months and was based on tissue biopsy in 4, and on CSF and bone marrow examination in 1 patient.
Lymphoma may imitate various central and peripheral nervous system disorders. We suggest several red flags that indicate the need to consider lymphoma, including subacute but progressive symptomatic evolution, painful neurological deficit, unclear clinical diagnosis, and transient steroid responsiveness. Correct diagnosis often requires a combination of diagnostic tests, while pathology testing is crucial for early diagnosis and is strongly recommended in the appropriate clinical setting.

We sought to test the hypothesis that a recently proposed pattern standard deviation (PSD) metric, based upon the 24-2 visual field (VF) test, as well as the PSD of the 10-2 VF, will miss central glaucomatous damage confirmed with an objective structure-function method.
Cross-sectional study.
A glaucoma (G) group (70 eyes/patients) diagnosed with glaucoma and a 24-2 mean deviation better than-6 dB and a healthy (H) group (45 eyes/patients) had 24-2 and 10-2 VFs and optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans twice within 4weeks. The PSD(C24-2), based upon the central 12 points of the 24-2, was compared with the PSD(10-2). To evaluate central damage (CD) in G eyes with normal PSD(C24-2) values, a post hoc analysis was combined with a CD reference standard (CD-RS), which was based upon an objective, topographic comparison between abnormal points on the 10-2 VF and OCT probability maps.
The 115 PSD(C24-2) and PSD(10-2) values were significantly correlated (Spearman correclation coefficient rho= 0.55; P < .001) and the number of G eyes (19) identified as abnormal by the PSD(C24-2) was not significantly different from the number (22) identified by the PSD(10-2) (P= .15). However, based upon the CD-RS, 44 of 70G eyes were classified as abnormal. The PSD(C24-2) missed 27 (61%) of these 44 eyes, and the PSD(10-2) missed 23 (52%) of these eyes. Post hoc analysis revealed clear CD in most of these eyes.

Retinal vascular change is associated with changes in the brains of patients with dementia; however, there is limited evidence regarding the relationship between retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and risk of dementia. This study investigated the association between RVO and subsequent risk of dementia using a cohort consisting of the entire Korean population.
Retrospective cohort study.
This study was based on the data from participants ≥40 years of age who underwent health examinations between 2009 and 2010 provided by the South Korean National Health Insurance Service. The RVO group (n= 46,259) consisted of patients whose initial diagnoses were between 2006 and 2010. The comparison group (3 per RVO patient; n= 138,777) was selected using propensity score matching according to age, sex, and systolic blood pressure. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models were performed.
During a mean follow-up of 6.6 years, 14,727 cases of dementia developed. From the Kaplan-Meier curves, probabilities of cases for all types of dementia were significantly increased in the RVO group, relative to the comparison group (all log-rank P <.001). After all confounding variables were adjusted, the RVO group exhibited increased risks of subsequent all-cause dementia (hazard ratio [HR] 1.16; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.12-1.21), Alzheimer's disease (HR 1.15; 95% CI 1.11-1.20), and vascular dementia (HR 1.24; 95% CI 1.12-1.37), relative to the comparison group. The presence of RVO was significantly associated with increased risks of all 3 types of dementia both in hypertensive and nonhypertensive individuals.

To determine the changes in optical coherence tomography (OCT) color probability codes and diagnostic ability for peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) analysis after applying Chinese and white subjects normative databases.

This study enrolled 219 healthy eyes (108 white and 111 Chinese patients) to construct an ethnicity-specific normative database for pRNFL and macular GCC thickness, which was tested then in 180 eyes with or without glaucoma (102 white and 78 Chinese patients). MPS testing was offered as an alternative to immediate biopsy in men referred to the University of Michigan for prostate biopsy from October 2013 through October 2016. The primary endpoint was the decision to perform biopsy. The proportion of patients undergoing biopsy was compared to predicted risk scores from the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial risk calculator (PCPTrc). Analyses were stratified by the use of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI). The associations of PCPTrc, MPS, and mpMRI with the decision to undergo biopsy were explored in a multivariable logistic regression model.

The PSD(C24-2), based upon the central 12 points of the 24-2, was compared with the PSD(10-2). To evaluate central damage (CD) in G eyes with normal PSD(C24-2) values, a post hoc analysis was combined with a CD reference standard (CD-RS), which was based upon an objective, topographic comparison between abnormal points on the 10-2 VF and OCT probability maps. The 115 PSD(C24-2) and PSD(10-2) values were significantly correlated (Spearman correclation coefficient rho= 0.55; P < .001) and the number of G eyes (19) identified as abnormal by the PSD(C24-2) was not significantly different from the number (22) identified by the PSD(10-2) (P= .15). However, based upon the CD-RS, 44 of 70G eyes were classified as abnormal. The PSD(C24-2) missed 27 (61%) of these 44 eyes, and the PSD(10-2) missed 23 (52%) of these eyes. This study investigated the association between RVO and subsequent risk of dementia using a cohort consisting of the entire Korean population. Retrospective cohort study. This study was based on the data from participants ≥40 years of age who underwent health examinations between 2009 and 2010 provided by the South Korean National Health Insurance Service. The RVO group (n= 46,259) consisted of patients whose initial diagnoses were between 2006 and 2010. The comparison group (3 per RVO patient; n= 138,777) was selected using propensity score matching according to age, sex, and systolic blood pressure. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models were performed. During a mean follow-up of 6.6 years, 14,727 cases of dementia developed. From the Kaplan-Meier curves, probabilities of cases for all types of dementia were significantly increased in the RVO group, relative to the comparison group (all log-rank P <.001). With the aggravation of aging of global population and increase of incidence of various chronic diseases and injuries, patients with chronic wounds due to different causes (malnutrition, abnormal metabolism, compression, infection, tumor, etc.) have grown. Especially in some patients at the end of life, chronic wounds have the characteristics of difficult to heal and even unable to heal. There is an urgent need for palliative treatment for such wounds. Palliative treatment of chronic wounds focuses on the management of smell, pain, exudate, bleeding, and infection with the hope to effectively prevent infection, relief pain, improve quality of life, and reduce the economic burden of medical treatment for patients. This paper reviews the related studies of palliative treatment in chronic wounds at home and abroad, and explores the evaluation and management of palliative treatment of different wounds with the aim to provide new management strategies, new materials, and new concept for the treatment of chronic wounds.The maintenance of posture and anti-contracture treatment are the critical elements of comprehensive burn rehabilitation in the overall treatment period of pediatric burns. Although domestic experts in burn discipline have formulated guidelines for burn rehabilitation, the maintenance of posture and design and manufacture of splints for anti-scar contractures in children with burns are different from that for adults with burns in many ways. Starting with paying the attention to the rehabilitation problems in pediatric burns, especially considering the anatomical, psychological, and social behavior characteristics of children in developmental period, the author's team effectively applies splints to maximize the prevention of contractures in children and maintain and improve the range of their joint movements. The splints designed to prevent contractures in pediatric burns shall fit the small limb and meet their expected goals of rehabilitation. In each aspect of the production and use of splints, it is necessary to fully evaluate and consider the scar characteristics, growth and development status, activity level, and compliance of children, and adaptability and fixation methods of the splints, so as to select the appropriate splint type and formulate the wearing plan.A 58-year-old male patient with diabetic foot ulcer was admitted to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine on December 11, 2018. The patient was treated with local debridement, vacuum sealing drainage treatment, and dressing change and discharged after basic wound healing. On January 15, 2019, the patient was hospitalized again due to local infection and rupture of wound surface. He underwent a surgical debridement on the third day after second admission and was given intravenous infusion of 0.4 g teicoplanin twice daily. Histopathological examination after surgery showed keratinizing squamous-cell carcinoma. An extended squamous-cell carcinoma resection plus autologous split-thickness skin grafting and vacuum sealing drainage treatment was carried out on the 10th day after second admission. The patient's whole body turned red after surgery with rash, recurrent fever over 39 ℃, leucopenia, and thrombocytopenia. A multi-disciplinary consultation of physicians attributed these symptoms to teicoplanin-induced hypersensitivity syndrome. After withdrawal of teicoplanin and administration of hormone, the patient's temperature returned to normal, and the leucocyte count and platelet count recovered gradually. The patient was cured and discharged on the 49th day after second admission. The case presented reminds us of need to strictly follow the indications of teicoplanin prior to medication, be resolute to the administration and withdrawal, and be alert to adverse drug reactions when above-mentioned abnormalities occur, meanwhile, infection and rheumatic diseases are excluded.On April 26, 2018, a 55-year-old male patient with severe phenol burn complicated with acute poisoning was admitted to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. The patient quickly developed the symptoms of central nervous system including blurred consciousness and restlessness, anuria, and respiratory failure. After self-rescue before admission and a series of measures in hospital including wound decontamination to reduce phenol absorption, rapid massive infusion and hemodialysis+ hemoperfusion, continuous renal replacement therapy for speeding up phenol excretion and organ function maintenance, the poisoning symptoms were effectively alleviated, and the patient was finally rescued successfully and discharged on post injury day 29. This case suggests that early hemodialysis combined with hemoperfusion and continuous renal replacement therapy are effective methods for treating severe phenol burn complicated with acute poisoning.On March 14, 2017, a thirty years old male severe burn patient accompanied by asphyxia, sudden cardiac arrest, and acute respiratory distress syndrome was admitted to Zhengzhou First People's Hospital. This study was performed to investigate the physicochemical quality characteristics of honey produced in Southeastern Anatolia of Turkey. A total of 68 honey samples collected from different beekeepers were analyzed for sugar components, moisture, pH, HMF, electrical conductivity, free acidity, proline values, and diastase number using the methods recommended by the International Honey Commission. The color value was determined by the Hanna HI 96785 color identification device using the Pfund scale. The mean values of fructose + glucose, fructose/glucose ratio, sucrose, and maltose were 70.97 ± 3.27%, 1.21 ± 0.15, 0.90 ± 1.35%, and 2.88 ± 1.42%, respectively. The moisture, pH, electrical conductivity, free acidity, diastase number, proline, and HMF values were 15.91 ± 1.05%, 4.10 ± 0.73, 0.21 ± 0.04 mS/cm, 14.94 ± 6.81 meq/kg, 10.68 ± 4.61, 420±, 174 mg/kg, and 18.5 ± 31.43 mg/kg, respectively. All of the samples met the international standards and legal limits set in Turkey for fructose + glucose, sucrose, moisture, electrical conductivity, and free acidity, whereas 20.58%, 25%, 10.29%, and 8.82% of the samples did not meet the standards and legal limits for the diastase number, proline value, HMF value, and fructose/glucose ratio, respectively. It has been considered to be important to raise awareness of the producer about good production practices and to ensure continuity of inspections for high-quality honey production.
We retrospectively compared the incidence of isolated elective nodal failure (IENF) and toxicity rates and survival outcomes after elective nodal irradiation (ENI) versus involved-field RT (IFRT) by employing the propensity score matching (PSM) methodology in stage IIIB/C inoperable non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy (C-CRT).
Our PSM examination included 1048 stage IIIB/C NSCLC patients treated with C-CRT from January 2007 to December 2016 a total dose of 66 Gy (2 Gy/fraction) radiotherapy and 1-3 cycles of platinum-based doublet chemotherapy concurrently. The primary and secondary endpoints were the IENF and toxicity rates and survival outcomes after ENI versus IFRT, respectively. Propensity scores were calculated for each group to adjust for confounding variables and facilitate well-balanced comparability by creating 1 1 matched study groups.

This study was performed to investigate the physicochemical quality characteristics of honey produced in Southeastern Anatolia of Turkey. A total of 68 honey samples collected from different beekeepers were analyzed for sugar components, moisture, pH, HMF, electrical conductivity, free acidity, proline values, and diastase number using the methods recommended by the International Honey Commission. The color value was determined by the Hanna HI 96785 color identification device using the Pfund scale. The mean values of fructose + glucose, fructose/glucose ratio, sucrose, and maltose were 70.97 ± 3.27%, 1.21 ± 0.15, 0.90 ± 1.35%, and 2.88 ± 1.42%, respectively. The moisture, pH, electrical conductivity, free acidity, diastase number, proline, and HMF values were 15.91 ± 1.05%, 4.10 ± 0.73, 0.21 ± 0.04 mS/cm, 14.94 ± 6.81 meq/kg, 10.68 ± 4.61, 420±, 174 mg/kg, and 18.5 ± 31.43 mg/kg, respectively. All of the samples met the international standards and legal limits set in Turkey for fructose + glucose, sucrose, moisture, electrical conductivity, and free acidity, whereas 20.58%, 25%, 10.29%, and 8.82% of the samples did not meet the standards and legal limits for the diastase number, proline value, HMF value, and fructose/glucose ratio, respectively. It has been considered to be important to raise awareness of the producer about good production practices and to ensure continuity of inspections for high-quality honey production. We retrospectively compared the incidence of isolated elective nodal failure (IENF) and toxicity rates and survival outcomes after elective nodal irradiation (ENI) versus involved-field RT (IFRT) by employing the propensity score matching (PSM) methodology in stage IIIB/C inoperable non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy (C-CRT). Our PSM examination included 1048 stage IIIB/C NSCLC patients treated with C-CRT from January 2007 to December 2016 a total dose of 66 Gy (2 Gy/fraction) radiotherapy and 1-3 cycles of platinum-based doublet chemotherapy concurrently. The primary and secondary endpoints were the IENF and toxicity rates and survival outcomes after ENI versus IFRT, respectively. Propensity scores were calculated for each group to adjust for confounding variables and facilitate well-balanced comparability by creating 1 1 matched study groups. Surgical procedures place children of all ages at risk for pediatric medical traumatic stress. Although medical play has proven effective in pediatric care, little is known about the impacts of a group medical play intervention on children's preoperative fear and anxiety. Therefore, the purpose of this pre-post quasi-experimental study was to explore the relationship between a group medical play activity and children's preoperative fear and anxiety.
Fifty children (aged 5-10 years) scheduled for a medical procedure participated in a group medical play session facilitated by a Certified Child Life Specialist.
Statistically significant decreases in anxiety and self-reported fear were observed after the intervention, suggesting that medical play may generate additional coping benefits when offered in group formats.
Providing children with the opportunity to explore and become familiar with medical equipment through group medical play can help to minimize preoperative anxiety and improve the patient experience for children and their families.

We investigated the predictors of patient-experienced and preferred roles for decision making, and the association between patient-experienced role in decision making and patient outcomes among congestive heart failure (HF) patients in a multi-ethnic Asian population.
We surveyed 246 HF patients classified as New York Heart Association class 3/4. Multivariable regressions were used to analyse the associations between patient-experienced roles and patient outcomes.
Patients who were male, attained higher education, and had a higher cognitive score were more likely to experience and prefer active roles in decision making. Younger patients and patients with lower symptom burden were more likely, while married patients were less likely to prefer leading decision making. Patients with collaborative (family and/or physician) decision making reported higher emotional well-being and sense of meaning/peace. Collaborative and patient-led decision making were associated with higher perceived control over illness. Those who were led by others or made decisions alone reported lower quality of physician communication.

Many are banking on this massive volume of diverse molecular data for breakthroughs in drug discovery and predicting sensitivity to risk factors, response to therapies and susceptibility to diabetes complications, as well as the development of disease-monitoring tools and surrogate outcomes. To realise these possibilities, it is essential that omics technologies are applied to well-designed epidemiological studies and that the emerging data are carefully analysed and interpreted. One might view this as next-generation epidemiology, where complex high-dimensionality data analysis approaches will need to be blended with many of the core principles of epidemiological research. In this article, we review the literature on omics in diabetes epidemiology and discuss how this field is evolving. Graphical abstract.Digital pathology with whole-slide imaging (WSI) has a large potential to make the process of expert consultation and expert panel diagnosis more rapid and more efficient. However, comparison with the current methods is necessary for validation of the technique. In this study, we determined if digital assessment of whole-slide images of hematopathology specimens with a focus on the assessment of lymphoma can be used for consultation and panel diagnostics. Ninety-three histological specimens with a suspicion for lymphoma were assessed both with conventional microscopy and digital microscopy with a wash out period between assessments. A consensus diagnosis was based on full concordance between the pathologists or, in case of discordances, was reached at a joint session at a multi-headed microscope. In 81% of the cases, there was a full concordance between digital and light microscopical assessment for all three pathologists. Discordances between conventional microscopy and digital pathology were present in 3% of assessments. In comparison with the consensus diagnosis, discordant diagnoses were made in 5 cases with digital microscopy and in 3 cases with light microscopy. The reported level of confidence and need for additional investigations were similar between assessment by conventional and by digital microscopy. In conclusion, the performance of assessment by digital pathology is in general comparable with that of conventional light microscopy and pathologists feel confident using digital pathology for this subspecialty.The concept of facial aesthetic has been around for centuries, popularised in the Renaissance period by artists such as Da Vinci. Periprosthetic infection remains the most common complication after implant-based breast reconstruction. Objectives of the study were to (1) describe our clinical approach and treatment protocol for managing patients with suspected periprosthetic infection, (2) identify the microorganisms causing periprosthetic infections at our institute, and (3) report on outcomes of implant salvage versus explantation.
A retrospective chart review of patients who were treated with parenteral antibiotics for periprosthetic infection was carried out. Patient characteristics, clinical and laboratory findings, outcomes, treatment modalities and complications were extracted from electronic medical records. Data were compared between patients whose implants were salvaged versus explanted.
Fifty-nine patients with 67 tissue expander (TE)/implants underwent parenteral antibiotic treatment for suspected infection. Thirty-three (49%) of the TE/implants were salvaged. The investigated individuals were at similar developmental stages and reared in adjacent ( less then 50 m) aquaculture cages; each cage had 15 kg fish m-3. The diets were nutritionally similar to support optimal growth for each fish species. DNA from the midgut of 3-6 individuals per fish species was extracted and sequenced for the V3-V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA. Only 3.9% of the total 181 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were shared among all fish. Between 5 and 74 OTUs were unique to each fish species. Each of the investigated fish species had a distinct profile of dominant OTUs, i.e. cumulative relative abundance of ≥ 80%. Co-occurrence network analysis for each fish species showed that all networks were strongly dominated by positive correlations between the abundances of their OTUs. However, each fish species had different network characteristics suggesting the differential significance of the OTUs in each of the five fish species midgut. The results of the present study may provide evidence that adult fish farmed in the Mediterranean Sea have a rather divergent and species-specific gut microbiota profile, which are shaped independently of the similar environmental conditions under which they grow.

The investigated individuals were at similar developmental stages and reared in adjacent ( less then 50 m) aquaculture cages; each cage had 15 kg fish m-3. The diets were nutritionally similar to support optimal growth for each fish species. DNA from the midgut of 3-6 individuals per fish species was extracted and sequenced for the V3-V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA. Only 3.9% of the total 181 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were shared among all fish. Between 5 and 74 OTUs were unique to each fish species. Each of the investigated fish species had a distinct profile of dominant OTUs, i.e. cumulative relative abundance of ≥ 80%. Co-occurrence network analysis for each fish species showed that all networks were strongly dominated by positive correlations between the abundances of their OTUs. However, each fish species had different network characteristics suggesting the differential significance of the OTUs in each of the five fish species midgut. The hydrogels were tested versus eight pathogenic strains of Gram +ve and Gram -ve bacteria and two fungi. The results revealed that hydrogels (CS-3) and (CS-3 NPs) showed higher antimicrobial activities than virgin (CS) and (CS-NPs). The lignin showed maximal UV-Vis at ~280 nm, 22.27 L/g·cm of absorptivity and, 2,503 kDa of molecular weight. Phenolic compounds (41.33 ± 0.65 mg GAE/g) and indications of a guaiacyl-syringyl-hydroxyphenyl (GSH)-type composition were found. Antioxidant activities of lignin to TAA (40±1.2%) and to DPPH (16.9±0.2%) was high and showed antifungal potential, especially against Candida spp. (IC50 = 31.3 μg/mL) and C. neoformans (15.6 μg/mL). In mouse splenocytes, the lignin was not cytotoxic and stimulated the cell proliferation and cytokine release. The complexation of the wide-spectrum antibiotic nalidixic acid (NA) with oxidovanadium(IV) ion and its incorporation into hybrid nanoparticulate systems were explored. The V-NA complex proved to be a stronger antimicrobial agent against E. coli, B. cereus, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa than NA, based on inhibition experiments. Myristyl myristate nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) and polymeric nanoparticles of Eudragit NE30D (EuNPs) were hybridized with chitosan (chi) to increase their stability and mucoadhesivity. They showed V-NA encapsulation of 97.8 ± 0.5% and 96.1 ± 0.1% respectively. TEM and DLS characterization ascertained the presence of spherical positive charged NPs ranging from 170 to 330 nm. Controlled release of V-NA from NPs was observed with 30-40% release in 3 days. A considerable potentiation of V-NA antimicrobial activity from 5 to 10 times was elucidated against P. aeruginosa with ****values of 59.3 and 129.9 μM for NLC/chi and EuNPs/chi respectively, in comparison with 625 μM of the free complex. The pH was adjusted to 3.50 or 5.50 as required. Systems were inoculated with Zygosaccharomyces bailii. The effect of additives alone and combined on Z. bailii growth was studied. In some cases, the possible use of additives as yeast nutrients was evaluated. Furthermore, systems rheological characterization was performed. Additives and the structure given by gellan gum significantly affected yeast growth. Gellan gum initially slowed Z. bailii development, but as storage progressed, it acted as yeast carbon source, promoting its growth. A similar trend was observed when xylitol effect was studied. Natamycin inhibited yeast growth in all systems assayed. Additives modified the rheological characteristics of the gels and this effect depended on gellan gum concentration and pH.
