    The lenses were successfully repositioned to the ciliary sulcus and sutured to the scleral wall (1 case) or the iris (2 cases), and the IOL was stable in the sulcus without the need for further sutured fixation in 1 case, with effective vision restored in all cases..

Subsequently, the right visual acuity declined from 20/25 to 20/70 and the left to hand motions due to corneal interstitial keratitis. There was limitation of left infraduction. Neuroimaging revealed dural thickening of the internal auditory canals, cavernous sinuses, cerebellum, and along the optic nerves. There was fusiform enhancing enlargement of the left inferior and medial rectus muscles and pathologic enlargement of the left lacrimal gland. Biopsy of the left lacrimal gland and left inferior rectus revealed fibrosis and lymphocytic infiltration. The patient was diagnosed with atypical Cogan syndrome and treated with oral prednisone, with improvement in visual acuity of the right eye, motility of the left eye, and systemic weakness.
    Free skin grafts are frequently used in reconstructive surgery. However, little is known about the course of reperfusion due to the previous lack of reliable perfusion monitoring techniques. The aim of this study was to use state-of-the-art laser speckle contrast imaging to monitor free skin grafts in the periocular area.

    Seven patients needing surgery due to tumor removal or cicatricial ectropion in the periocular region underwent reconstructive surgery using free skin grafts from either the contralateral upper eyelid or the upper inner arm. The free skin grafts measured 10-30 mm horizontally and 9-30 mm vertically. Blood perfusion was monitored using laser speckle contrast imaging immediately postoperatively (0 weeks) and at follow-up after 1, 3, and 7 weeks.

    All grafts were reperfused gradually during healing, the median value being 46% in the central part of the graft after 1 week and 79% after 3 weeks. The grafts were completely reperfused after 7 weeks. No difference was observed in the rate of reperfusion between the center and periphery of the grafts (p = not significant). The cosmetic and functional outcome was excellent in all but 1 patient, who developed ectropion that had to be surgically corrected.

  • OBJECTIVE YouTube is currently the second most popular website in the world and thus it is often used by patients to access health information regarding their condition(s). Our aim was to evaluate the content-quality of YouTube videos relating to hydrocephalus. METHODS We chose the first 35 videos for four different search phrases "water on the brain," "hydrocephalus," "pediatric hydrocephalus" and "adult hydrocephalus." Video contents were evaluated by two independent final year medical students with more than 5 years of experience using the DISCERN criteria (scoring system from 1-5 per question). Qualitative data, quantitative data and the upload source about each video was recorded for quality and optimization analysis. RESULTS Out of the total 140 videos, 63 videos met our inclusion criteria and were evaluated. The mean DISCERN score was 29.9 out of a total of 75 possible points. This indicates that the quality of YouTube videos on hydrocephalus is currently poor. Reliability between the two raters was excellent (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.96). Most videos had clear information (90%), a doctor speaking (70%), and described the symptoms (62%). Videos were most commonly uploaded by hospitals (44%) or by educational channels (43%). Our study found that videos that contained the results of treatment had a **** higher average daily view (P=0.0229) than videos that did not. CONCLUSION The quality of YouTube videos on hydrocephalus is poor, however, we indicated the top-quality videos in our paper as they may be effective tools for patient education. Our optimization analysis found that including diagrams and explaining the results of hydrocephalus treatment results in a higher audience engagement (in the form of likes, comments and views). BACKGROUND Nonlethal neural tube defects are developmental malformations with complex pathogenesis usually manifested at birth or in childhood. CASE DESCRIPTION We report the case of a 61-year-old woman without significant previous clinical history presenting for neck pain and stiffness. An extensive workup detected multiple lytic lesions within the occipital bone and cervical vertebrae, suspicious for multiple myeloma or metastatic disease. Surgical resection of the occipital bone lesions revealed ectopic cerebellar tissue, some containing folia with mature cortical lamination, and no evidence of malignancy. CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, this study describes the oldest individual presenting with ectopic cerebellar tissue and the only instance in which oncologic workup for malignancy was carried out prior to resection. It also proposes surgical resection as a diagnostic and curative approach for this complex basicranium and neural developmental defect, and discusses retinoic acid toxicity as a possible cause of its occurrence. https://www.selleckchem.com/ BACKGROUND Intraoperative manipulation of the craniocervical junction with the Cervical Management Base Unit (CMBU) has been used as an adjunct for achieving optimal anatomic alignment during instrumented fusion procedures in a variety of disease settings. Here, we present our experience using the CMBU as a supplement to achieving a successful reduction and fixation of a reducible craniocervical subluxation with associated basilar impression/medullary compression in the setting of Grisel syndrome. CASE DESCRIPTION Under fluoroscopy and neuromonitoring guidance, the elevator and axial translation mechanisms of the CMBU safely allowed for presurgical assessment of reducibility and facilitated complete reduction of the deformity with restitution of a normal atlantodental interval, spinolaminar line, and clivoaxial angle. Magnetic resonance imaging acquired 1 month after surgery and antibiotic therapy showed resolution of a large epidural abscess in the region of the dens and no evidence of residual neural impingement. Upright plain films at 9 months showed maintenance of the desired craniocervical alignment. CONCLUSIONS Intraoperative manipulation of the craniocervical junction using the CMBU, when implemented under fluoroscopy and neuromonitoring, can safely facilitate an enduring anatomic correction of craniocervical deformity in the setting of Grisel syndrome. The dynamic utility of the CMBU for translation of the head and neck obviated the need to apply forces directly to hardware-bone interfaces, and its utility may extend to craniocervical disorders of other etiologies, especially those of a reducible nature and in the setting of poor bone quality and joint laxity. Perimedullary arteriovenous fistulas (pAVFs) of the anterior cervical spinal cord are rare and difficult to eradicate by surgery due to the limitations of the approach routes. Because of the anatomical relationships, an anterior approach with corpectomy can provide direct observation. However, a narrow corridor to the lesion is the drawback of this approach. Therefore, to overcome this limitation, we introduced angled endoscopes integrated with fluorescence video angiography to observe the real-time blood flow. A 47-year-old woman was incidentally found to have a pAVF fed by multiple radicular arteries, and she underwent direct surgery via the anterior approach. Although observation of the entire lesion was difficult with the microscope alone, the introduction of the angled endoscope made it possible to observe the lateral portion of the spinal cord hidden behind the dura mater. Furthermore, endoscopic fluorescein video angiography visualized residual fine feeding arteries that were then electrocoagulated, which contributed to complete obliteration of the shunt. The anterior approach with endoscopic assistance is a reasonable strategy for the treatment of ventrally located cervical pAVFs. Furthermore, integration of a fluorescence video angiography system with the endoscope enables confirmation of the complicated real-time hemodynamics of the pAVFs, contributing to reliable treatment. Afterward, we reviewed the results to certify that they were relevant to the purposes of our research protocol. The 100 most cited papers were chosen and further analyzed. RESULTS Our search resulted in 11,579 articles, published from 1975 until the completion of our survey. The most cited article, by Patchell et al., was published in 1990, with 1862 citations, and an average of 62.07 citations per year, whereas the last in our list, by Gaspar et al.

Here we report a three-generation family with 13 patients affected by osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) type I, short stature and advanced bone age, with or without early-onset osteoarthritis and/or osteochondritis dissecans (SSOAOD) or both. Panel sequencing of the proband revealed mutations in two extracellular matrix related genes COL1A1 and ACAN. When comparing the quantitative trait, height within the family of different mutation carrier groups, we found an interesting cumulative effect, the ones with both mutations manifest shortest stature. Panel sequencing of the proband revealed mutations in two extracellular matrix related genes COL1A1 and ACAN. When comparing the quantitative trait, height within the family of different mutation carrier groups, we found an interesting cumulative effect, the ones with both mutations manifest shortest stature.     Medication-overuse headache (MOH) as a secondary chronic headache imposes a considerable burden on both individuals and societies. Nevertheless, little is known about the burden of MOH in Iran. Therefore, in the current study, we aimed to quantify the annual cost of MOH among Iranian patients.

    In this cross-sectional study, 84 patients were recruited. Demographic data, headache attack characteristics, related disability, and information about the economic burden of MOH were collected through face-to-face interview. Direct medical and nonmedical costs as well as indirect costs were included in our cost analysis. The prevalence-based approach was applied to estimate the economic burden of MOH.

    We found that MOH patients in Iran spend averagely $1046 for medical services, $132 for nonmedical services, and $1432 due to lost productivity per year. The per-person annual cost of MOH was US$2610, and the total annual cost for Iran was $10,179,000,000, with direct and indirect cost accounting for 45% and 55%, respectively.

    MOH leads to substantial healthcare costs and significant loss of productivity in Iran. Therefore, raising awareness in this area especially for policymakers can use in future health planning and lead to resource allocation in the field of disabling type of headache disorders such as MOH. Our findings also provide a different insight into the burden of MOH, which are likely closer to the actual costs in middle- and low-income countries, and also it could be a sample of such a study in western Asia.

    This study was carried out to determine the paramphistome species parasitizing water buffaloes (WBs) grazing in the Kızılırmak Delta in Samsun Province, Turkey, and the intermediate hosts of the parasites.

    Between August 2016 and July 2018, abattoirs in Samsun Province were visited weekly and 139 slaughtered WBs were examined for paramphistome species. In the same period, 550 snails (300 Galba truncatula, 200 Physella (Physa) acuta and 50 Planorbis planorbis) were collected from pastures grazed by WBs during monthly sampling in the spring and autumn. Adult parasites were identified through the use of histological and molecular methods and larval stages were identified with a molecular method.

    Forty-five of the 139 WBs (32.4%) were infected with species of the family Paramphistomidae and a total of 4761 (mean 105.8) parasites were collected from them. The genera Paramphistomum and Calicophoron were distinguished from each other by examining the development status of the pars musculosa and the degree of lixed infections in only three animals.

In the context of traumatic brain injury (TBI), we hypothesized that the regional abundance of soluble monomeric α-synuclein is altered over a chronic time period post-injury. To this end, we evaluated α-synuclein in the cortex, hippocampus, and striatum of adult rats at 6 h, 1 day, 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks after controlled cortical impact (CCI) injury. Western blot analysis demonstrated decreased levels of monomer α-synuclein protein in the ipsilateral hippocampus at 6 h, 1 day, 1, 2, and 8 weeks, as well as in the ipsilateral cortex at 1 and 2 weeks and in the ipsilateral striatum at 6 h after CCI compared with sham animals. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed lower α-synuclein and a modest reduction in synaptophysin staining in the ipsilateral hippocampus at 1 week after CCI compared with sham animals, with no evidence of intracellular or extracellular α-synuclein aggregates. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that monomeric α-synuclein protein abundance in the hippocampus is reduced over an extensive (acute-to-chronic) post-injury interval. As depression has received more attention in recent years, it has become imperative to develop automatic methods for detecting depression. Although numerous machine learning methods have been proposed for estimating the levels of depression via audio, visual, and audiovisual emotion sensing, several challenges still exist. For example, it is difficult to extract long-term temporal context information from long sequences of audio and visual data, and it is also difficult to select and fuse useful multi-modal information or features effectively. In addition, how to include other information or tasks to enhance the estimation accuracy is also one of the challenges. In this study, we propose a multi-modal adaptive fusion transformer network for estimating the levels of depression. Transformer-based models have achieved state-of-the-art performance in language understanding and sequence modeling. Thus, the proposed transformer-based network is utilized to extract long-term temporal context information from uni-modal audio and visual data in our work. This is the first transformer-based approach for depression detection. We also propose an adaptive fusion method for adaptively fusing useful multi-modal features. Furthermore, inspired by current multi-task learning work, we also incorporate an auxiliary task (depression classification) to enhance the main task of depression level regression (estimation). The effectiveness of the proposed method has been validated on a public dataset (AVEC 2019 Detecting Depression with AI Sub-challenge) in terms of the PHQ-8 scores. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method achieves better performance compared with currently state-of-the-art methods. Our proposed method achieves a concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) of 0.733 on AVEC 2019 which is 6.2% higher than the accuracy (CCC = 0.696) of the state-of-the-art method.This paper proposes a method to improve the angular velocity measured by a low-cost magnetic rotary encoder attached to a brushed direct current (DC) motor. The low-cost magnetic rotary encoder used in brushed DC motors use to have a small magnetic ring attached to the rotational axis and one or more fixed Hall-effect sensors next to the magnet. Then, the Hall-effect sensors provide digital pulses with a duration and frequency proportional to the angular rotational velocity of the shaft of the encoder. The drawback of this mass produced rotary encoder is that any structural misalignment between the rotating magnetic field and the Hall-effect sensors produces asymmetric pulses that reduces the precision of the estimation of the angular velocity. The hypothesis of this paper is that the information provided by this low-cost magnetic rotary encoder can be processed and improved in order to obtain an accurate and precise estimation of the angular rotational velocity. The methodology proposed has been validated in four compact motorizations obtaining a reduction in the ripple of the estimation of the angular rotational velocity of 4.93%, 59.43%, 76.49%, and 86.75%. This improvement has the advantage that it does not add time delays and does not increases the overall cost of the rotary encoder. As depression has received more attention in recent years, it has become imperative to develop automatic methods for detecting depression. Although numerous machine learning methods have been proposed for estimating the levels of depression via audio, visual, and audiovisual emotion sensing, several challenges still exist. For example, it is difficult to extract long-term temporal context information from long sequences of audio and visual data, and it is also difficult to select and fuse useful multi-modal information or features effectively. In addition, how to include other information or tasks to enhance the estimation accuracy is also one of the challenges. In this study, we propose a multi-modal adaptive fusion transformer network for estimating the levels of depression. Transformer-based models have achieved state-of-the-art performance in language understanding and sequence modeling. Thus, the proposed transformer-based network is utilized to extract long-term temporal context information from uni-modal audio and visual data in our work. This is the first transformer-based approach for depression detection. We also propose an adaptive fusion method for adaptively fusing useful multi-modal features. Furthermore, inspired by current multi-task learning work, we also incorporate an auxiliary task (depression classification) to enhance the main task of depression level regression (estimation). The effectiveness of the proposed method has been validated on a public dataset (AVEC 2019 Detecting Depression with AI Sub-challenge) in terms of the PHQ-8 scores. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method achieves better performance compared with currently state-of-the-art methods. Our proposed method achieves a concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) of 0.733 on AVEC 2019 which is 6.2% higher than the accuracy (CCC = 0.696) of the state-of-the-art method.This paper proposes a method to improve the angular velocity measured by a low-cost magnetic rotary encoder attached to a brushed direct current (DC) motor. The low-cost magnetic rotary encoder used in brushed DC motors use to have a small magnetic ring attached to the rotational axis and one or more fixed Hall-effect sensors next to the magnet. Then, the Hall-effect sensors provide digital pulses with a duration and frequency proportional to the angular rotational velocity of the shaft of the encoder. The drawback of this mass produced rotary encoder is that any structural misalignment between the rotating magnetic field and the Hall-effect sensors produces asymmetric pulses that reduces the precision of the estimation of the angular velocity. The hypothesis of this paper is that the information provided by this low-cost magnetic rotary encoder can be processed and improved in order to obtain an accurate and precise estimation of the angular rotational velocity. The methodology proposed has been validated in four compact motorizations obtaining a reduction in the ripple of the estimation of the angular rotational velocity of 4.93%, 59.43%, 76.49%, and 86.75%. This improvement has the advantage that it does not add time delays and does not increases the overall cost of the rotary encoder. Several antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) impair the liver function to different degrees, such as valproic acid, lamotrigine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, and carbamazepine. Various techniques are available to the endoscopist that can increase the accuracy of colonoscopic evaluation. These include luminal inflation and deflation, looking behind and pressing haustral folds, and repetitive passage of the scope over poorly visualized areas. To our knowledge, only 3 cases have been reported in the literature describing the discovery of obscure appendiceal polyps using colonoscopic techniques. Here we describe three cases of appendiceal orifice polyps missed on initial visualization but subsequently protruded into the cecum following prolonged examination and gentle deflation in the cecum. The endoscopist should consider the possibility of an appendiceal neoplasm, especially if other colonic polyps have been found. Angiography of the superior rectal artery and left internal iliac artery showed vascular hyperplasia and nidus. Thus, rectal arteriovenous malformation was diagnosed. If bleeding from arteriovenous malformation was out of control, surgical resection was necessary. However, due to the age of the patient, we performed transcatheter arterial embolization and abdominoperineal resection was not needed. Embolization from the left superior rectal artery, middle rectal artery and inferior rectal artery was performed to control the bleeding and to avoid surgery. EEG signals were recorded using 21 channels. Based on the fact that EEG signals are time series, an approach has been developed for their analysis using nonlinear dynamics tools calculating the Lyapunov exponent's spectrum, multiscale entropy, and Lempel-Ziv complexity. The calculation of the first Lyapunov exponent is carried out by three methods Wolf, Rosenstein, and Sano-Sawada, to obtain reliable results. The seven Lyapunov exponent spectra are calculated by the Sano-Sawada method. For the observed patient, studies showed that with medical treatment, his condition did not improve, and as a result, it was recommended to switch from conservative treatment to surgical. The obtained results of the patient's EEG study using the indicated nonlinear dynamics methods are in good agreement with the medical report and MRI data. We analyzed 23 subjects performing two tasks describing the positive consequences (PC) of abstinence and the negative consequences (NC) of using cocaine. We perform two main experiments first, we analyzed whether acoustic and semantic features can infer clinical variables such as the Cocaine Selective Severity Assessment; then, we analyzed the main problem of interest to see if these features are powerful enough to infer if the subjects remains abstinent. Our results show that speech features have potential to be used as a proxy to monitor cocaine users under treatment to recover from their addiction.

It is demonstrated that a 4.0 mol L-1 LiN(SO2 F)2 /dimethyl carbonate electrolyte enables the stable charge-discharge cycling of a graphite anode and a high-capacity LiNi0.6 Co0.2 Mn0.2 O2 cathode and the corresponding full cell in a wide temperature range from -20 to 100 °C owing to the highly thermal stable solvation structure of the concentrated electrolyte together with the robust and Li+ -conductive passivation interphase it offered that alleviate various challenges at high temperatures. This work demonstrates the potential for the development of safe LIBs without the need for bulky and heavy thermal management systems, thus significantly increasing the overall energy density.As a research hotspot, the development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents has attracted great attention over the past decades for improving the accuracy of diagnosis. On top of these merits, USPIO nanoparticles are used for developing not only T1 contrast agents, but also T2 /T1 switchable contrast agents via assembly/disassembly approaches. In recent years, as a new type of contrast agents, USPIO nanoparticles have shown considerable applications in the diagnosis of various diseases such as vascular pathological changes and inflammations apart from malignant tumors. In this review, we are focusing on the state-of-the-art developments and the latest applications of USPIO nanoparticles as MRI contrast agents to discuss their advantages and future prospects.     A reduced mismatch negativity (MMN) response is a promising electrophysiological endophenotype of schizophrenia that reflects neurocognitive impairment. Dopamine dysfunction is associated with symptoms of schizophrenia. However, whether the dopamine system is involved in MMN impairment remains controversial. In this study, we investigated the effects of the dopamine D2-like receptor agonist quinpirole on mismatch responses to sound frequency changes in an animal model.

    Event-related potentials were recorded from electrocorticogram electrodes placed on the auditory and frontal cortices of freely moving rats using a frequency oddball paradigm consisting of ascending and equiprobable (ie, many standards) control sequences before and after the subcutaneous administration of quinpirole. To detect mismatch responses, difference waveforms were obtained by subtracting nondeviant control waveforms from deviant waveforms.

    Here, we show the significant effects of quinpirole on frontal mismatch responses to sound frequency deviations in rats. Quinpirole delayed the frontal N18 and P30 mismatch responses and reduced the frontal N55 MMN-like response, which resulted from the reduction in the N55 amplitude to deviant stimuli. Importantly, the magnitude of the N55 amplitude was negatively correlated with the time of the P30 latency in the difference waveforms. In contrast, quinpirole administration did not clearly affect the temporal mismatch responses recorded from the auditory cortex.

    These results suggest that the disruption of dopamine D2-like receptor signaling by quinpirole reduces frontal MMN to sound frequency deviations and that delays in early mismatch responses are involved in this MMN impairment.

Low-level mosaicism of the target variant c.553C>G (p.Gln185Glu) was detected in the father's sperm with allele fraction of 2.8% by amplicon-based deep sequencing, which was not detected in either parents' blood or saliva specimens. Heterozygosity of this variant was confirmed in the proband. This is the first report of paternal germline mosaicism for a SMARCA2 disease-causing variant. In addition, the missense variant c.553C>G (p.Gln185Glu) in the QLQ domain causes mainly neurological and developmental phenotypes with unremarkable characteristic facial features and limb abnormalities. A reduced mismatch negativity (MMN) response is a promising electrophysiological endophenotype of schizophrenia that reflects neurocognitive impairment. Dopamine dysfunction is associated with symptoms of schizophrenia. However, whether the dopamine system is involved in MMN impairment remains controversial. In this study, we investigated the effects of the dopamine D2-like receptor agonist quinpirole on mismatch responses to sound frequency changes in an animal model. Event-related potentials were recorded from electrocorticogram electrodes placed on the auditory and frontal cortices of freely moving rats using a frequency oddball paradigm consisting of ascending and equiprobable (ie, many standards) control sequences before and after the subcutaneous administration of quinpirole. To detect mismatch responses, difference waveforms were obtained by subtracting nondeviant control waveforms from deviant waveforms. Here, we show the significant effects of quinpirole on frontal mismatch responses to sound frequency deviations in rats. Quinpirole delayed the frontal N18 and P30 mismatch responses and reduced the frontal N55 MMN-like response, which resulted from the reduction in the N55 amplitude to deviant stimuli. Importantly, the magnitude of the N55 amplitude was negatively correlated with the time of the P30 latency in the difference waveforms. In contrast, quinpirole administration did not clearly affect the temporal mismatch responses recorded from the auditory cortex. These results suggest that the disruption of dopamine D2-like receptor signaling by quinpirole reduces frontal MMN to sound frequency deviations and that delays in early mismatch responses are involved in this MMN impairment. In this pilot study, the Nano3 method was further applied in processing 10-1000 HeLa cells for bottom-up proteomics, producing 441 ± 263 (n = 4) (MS/MS) and 983 ± 292 (n = 4) [match between runs (MBR)+MS/MS] protein identifications from only 10 HeLa cells using a Q-Exactive HF mass spectrometer. Consequently, this MOF-based electrode possesses a high capacity of 138 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1 and a long life span (93.5% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 3000 mA g-1) due to the above advantages. Such distinct Zn2+ ion storage performance surpasses those of most of the recently reported MOF cathodes. Herein, a simple and highly efficient strategy, which combines HF etching of Ti3AlC2 powder and subsequent amine-assisted delamination at a low temperature, is developed to synthesize 2D Ti3C2Tx MXenes. The comprehensive results demonstrate that the enlarged interlayer spacing and the presence of more -O-containing functional groups synergistically contribute to the improvement of capacitive performance in neutral electrolytes. The 2D Ti3C2Tx MXenes show excellent electrochemical performance in various neutral electrolytes, and a high specific gravimetric capacitance of 149.8 F/g is achieved in 1.0 M Li2SO4. Furthermore, the flexible solid-state supercapacitors (SCs) with a neutral PVA/LiCl gel electrolyte possess a superior areal capacitance (163.1 mF/cm2) and high energy density (17.6 μWh/cm2 at 0.07 mW/cm2), together with high user safety. This work provides a promising guideline of synthesis strategy for high-capacitive MXenes used in neutral electrolytes, which may promote the development of safe and flexible power sources with a high energy density.

  • The article deals with the analysis of the fractional COVID-19 epidemic model (FCEM) with a convex incidence rate. Keeping in view the fading memory and crossover behavior found in many biological phenomena, we study the coronavirus disease by using the noninteger Caputo derivative (CD). Under the Caputo operator (CO), existence and uniqueness for the solutions of the FCEM have been analyzed using fixed point theorems. Sensitivity analysis is carried out to highlight the most sensitive parameters corresponding to basic reproduction number. Simulations are performed via first-order convergent numerical technique to determine how changes in parameters affect the dynamical behavior of the system.This paper presents a novel model to detect the COVID-19 infected person from a Markovian feedback persons in a limited department capacity. The persons arrive one by one to the department and the balking and the retention of reneged person approaches are considered. There exists one server presents the service to these persons according to first-come, first-served (FCFS) discipline. An efficient and novel algorithm is presented to get the exact value of the probability of n persons in the department at any time interval. This algorithm depends on the Laplace transform to solve a probabilistic dynamical system of differential equations. By considering the exponential detection function and if the probability of the infected person in the department is equal to the probability of each one, then this algorithm is useful to obtain the detection probability of the infected one. Under steady state, the detection probability of the infected person is described. The usefulness of this model is illustrated for different capacities by using a numerical example to describe the behavior of probabilities of the persons in the department, the detection probabilities of the infected person as functions in time, and the mean time to detection.Coronavirus disease 2019 and related lockdown policies in 2020 shocked food industry firms' supply chains in developing regions. Firms "pivoted" to e-commerce to reach consumers and e-procurement to reach processors and farmers. "Delivery intermediaries" copivoted with food firms to help them deliver and procure. This was crucial to the ability of the food firms to pivot. The pandemic was a "crucible" that induced this set of fast-tracking innovations, accelerating the diffusion of e-commerce and delivery intermediaries, and enabling food industry firms to redesign, at least temporarily, and perhaps for the long term, their supply chains to be more resilient, and to weather the pandemic, supply consumers, and contribute to food security. We present a theoretical model to explain these firm strategies, and then apply the framework to classify firms' practical strategies. We focus on cases in Asia and Latin America. Enabling policy and infrastructural conditions allowed firms to pivot and copivot fluidly.In this paper we descriptively investigate the Covid-19 pandemic's early impact on the fruit and vegetable supply chain in Senegal, using trade statistics and survey data collected through online questionnaires and telephone interviews with smallholder farmers, agro-industrial companies, agricultural workers, traders, importers, and consumers. Our results point to major differences in how Covid-19 and containment measures disrupt supply chains between the modern export-oriented supply chain that is centered around a few large vertically integrated agro-industrial companies, and the more traditional domestic-oriented supply chain with a large number of smallholder farmers and informal traders-with the former being more resilient to the Covid-19 shock. We show that both the modern and the traditional supply chain innovate to cope with the Covid-19 containment measures. While our study is subject to some limitations, our findings bring nuance in the debate on the resilience of the food system to the pandemic, and have important policy and research implications toward international trade, social safety measures, and food and nutrition security.This study assesses the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on poverty, food insecurity, and diets, accounting for the complex links between the crisis and the incomes and living costs of vulnerable households. Key elements are impacts on labor supply, effects of social distancing, shifts in demand from services involving close contact, increases in the cost of logistics in food and other supply chains, and reductions in savings and investment. These are examined using IFPRI's global general equilibrium model linked to epidemiological and household models. The simulations suggest that the global recession caused by COVID-19 will be **** deeper than that of the 2008-2009 financial crisis. The increases in poverty are concentrated in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa with impacts harder in urban areas than in rural. The COVID-19-related lockdown measures explain most of the fall in output, whereas declines in savings soften the adverse impacts on food consumption. Almost 150 million people are projected to fall into extreme poverty and food insecurity. Decomposition of the results shows that approaches assuming uniform income shocks would underestimate the impact by as **** as one-third, emphasizing the need for the more refined approach of this study.We study how individual decisions are affected by those of other members of the society. We use the vaccine against COVID-19 as a case study and empirically estimate the magnitude of three key forces Herding, Social Norms, and Free-riding. We find that Free-riding is dominated by the other two forces, and that Social Norms are a key driver of behavior. There is, however, substantial heterogeneity and systematic differences between people by demographics and their political preferences.The objective prevalence of and subjective vulnerability to infectious diseases are associated with greater ingroup preference, conformity, and traditionalism. However, evidence directly testing the link between infectious diseases and political ideology and partisanship is lacking. Across four studies, including a large sample representative of the U.S. population (N > 12,000), we demonstrate that higher environmental levels of human transmissible diseases and avoidance of germs from human carriers predict conservative ideological and partisan preferences. During the COVID-19 pandemic (N = 848), we replicated this germ aversion finding and determined that these conservative preferences were primarily driven by avoidance of germs from outgroups (foreigners) rather than ingroups (locals). Moreover, socially conservative individuals expressed lower concerns of being susceptible to contracting infectious diseases during the pandemic and worried less about COVID-19. These effects were robust to individual-level and state-level controls.

    Penile cancer is an uncommon disease with poor prognosis when spread to more than one inguinal lymph node. Recommendations on chemo- and radiotherapy in treatment guidelines are based on low-grade evidence. There are to our knowledge no described population-based cohort with detailed information on given oncological treatment and survival data. The aim of this study is to investigate in detail how men with metastatic penile cancer have been treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy over time, and how survival varies with N-stage and given treatment.

    For this observational cohort study all men in Sweden diagnosed with penile cancer with lymph node- or distant metastases 2000-2015 were identified through the Swedish National Penile Cancer Register (NPECR). Medical records were retrieved and 325 men were confirmed to have metastatic penile cancer (T
    , c or pN1-3 and/or M1). Information on treatments was collected. Causes of death were retrieved from the National Cause of Death Register (CDR).

    Chemotherapd. Treatment was given predominantly to men with c/pN2-3 and M1-disease. When upgrade occurs, it is correlated with older age, higher CCI, smoking history, and prior surgery and is associated with worse clinical outcomes.Muscle dysmorphia is characterised by a strong preoccupation with being lean and muscular, with negative psychological and social consequences. The condition mostly affects men, mainly because of sociocultural messages promoting hyper-muscular forms as ideal male figures. Relatively few studies have examined muscle dysmorphia in transgender people. Using a sample of 293 Italian adults, in this study we compared muscle dysmorphia symptoms (drive for size, appearance anxiety/avoidance and functional impairment) across 60 binary transgender (women and men whose gender identity did not conform to their biological sex), 217 cisgender (women and men whose biological sex aligns with their gender identity) and 16 non-binary people (those whose gender identity did not fall within the binary gender system). We also investigated the effect of the internalisation of body ideals on the development of muscle dysmorphia, analysing the moderating role of gender identity. Findings showed that i) transgender and cisgender men scored similarly higher on drive for size, ii) transgender men scored higher on appearance anxiety/avoidance, compared to other gender groups, iii) no differences were found in functional impairment. The effect of internalisation of body ideals on drive for size was stronger in cisgender men. Although SYNCRIP has been identified as a component of cytoplasmic RNA granules in dendrites of mammalian neurons, only little is known about the specific SYNCRIP target mRNAs that mediate its effect on neuronal morphogenesis and function. Here, we present a comprehensive characterization of the cytoplasmic SYNCRIP mRNA interactome using iCLIP in primary rat cortical neurons. We identify hundreds of bona fide SYNCRIP target mRNAs, many of which encode for proteins involved in neurogenesis, neuronal migration and neurite outgrowth. From our analysis, the stabilization of mRNAs encoding for components of the microtubule network, such as doublecortin (Dcx), emerges as a novel mechanism of SYNCRIP function in addition to the previously reported control of actin dynamics. Furthermore, we found that SYNCRIP synergizes with pro-neural miRNAs, such as miR-9. Thus, SYNCRIP appears to promote early neuronal differentiation by a two-tier mechanism involving the stabilization of pro-neural mRNAs by direct 3'UTR interaction and the repression of anti-neural mRNAs in a complex with neuronal miRISC. Together, our findings provide a rationale for future studies investigating the function of SYNCRIP in mammalian brain development and disease.Among all emerging contaminants, pharmaceutical compounds as tetracycline (TC) can cause potential environmental impact in water quality. In this work, the removal of TC drug on activated carbon from aqueous solution was studied and the best operating parameters were obtained. In addition, a real aqueous matrix was enriched with TC and the optimized conditions were applied to study the adsorption process efficiency. For this, the influence of pH, contact time between phases and dosage of adsorbent solid was evaluated. The investigation of kinetics, equilibrium and thermodynamic was also performed. The adsorbent material was characterized by SEM analysis and N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms to confirm its properties. Batch experiments showed that the most suitable experimental conditions for adsorption in aqueous solution were pH 4.0, contact time 90 min and dosage of adsorbent solid 30 g.L-1. Under these conditions, it was possible to obtain 92.7% of TC removal with predominance of a spontaneous, favorable and endothermic chemisorption process.

  • We report on an optical nitrogen oxide (NO) gas sensor device using cobalt tetraphenylporphyrin (CoTPP) dispersed in three kinds of hydrophobic polymer film matrix (polystyrene (PSt), ethylcellulose (EC), and polycyclohexyl methacrylate (PCHMA)) to improve humidity resistance. Our approach is very effective because it allows us to achieve not only high humidity resistance, but also a more than sixfold increase in sensitivity compared with CoTPP film due to the high dispersion of CoTPP in the polymer film. The limit of detection was calculated as 33 ppb for the CoTPP-dispersed EC film, which is lower than that of CoTPP film (92 ppb).We investigated a prototype virtual-pinhole positron emission tomography (PET) system for small-animal imaging applications. The PET detector modules were made up of 1.3 mm lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) arrays, and the insert detectors consisted of 0.6 mm pixelated cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe). To validate the imaging experiment, we did a Monte Carlo simulation for the virtual-pinhole PET (VP-PET) system in the Geant4 Application for Emission Tomography (GATE). For a point source of 22Na with a 0.5 mm diameter, the filtered ****-projection algorithm-reconstructed PET image showed a resolution of 0.7 mm full-width-at-half-maximum. The system sensitivity was 0.46 cps/kBq at the center of the field view of the PET system with a source activity of 0.925 MBq and an energy window of 350 to 650 keV. A rod source phantom and a Derenzo phantom with 18F were also simulated to investigate the PET imaging ability. GATE simulation indicated that sources with 0.5 mm diameter could be clearly detected using 0.6 mm pixelated CdZnTe detectors as insert devices in a VP-PET system.Evidence of psychosocial stress at work as a risk factor for diabetes and prediabetes is restricted. METHODS A prospective study was carried out with data from 7503 active workers from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) study in the period 2008-2014. Work stress was measured by two stress models. Glycemic levels were evaluated by glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in two moments and classified in four groups normal, maintenance of prediabetes, incident prediabetes, and incident diabetes. https://www.selleckchem.com/ Multinomial logistic regression was analyzed with 5% significance levels stratified by sex, and multiplicative interactions were investigated. RESULTS Work stress and glycemic alterations were more frequent in women. Psychosocial stress at work was shown to be associated to the risk of prediabetes and diabetes only among women. For women, the combination of models enlarged the magnitude of the association prediabetes (DC-ERI = OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.15-1.99) and diabetes (DC-ERI = OR 2.10, 95% CI 1.20-3.65). Highly-educated women exposed to ERI-OC were four times more likely to have diabetes. Mycotoxicity mechanisms of action (MOA) are largely unknown, and co-contamination, which is often the case, raises the likelihood of mycotoxin interactions. Mitigation strategies for reducing the risk of mycotoxicity are diverse and may not necessarily provide protection against all mycotoxins. These factors, as well as the species-specific risk of toxicity, collectively make an assessment of exposure, toxicity, and risk mitigation very challenging and costly; thus, in-vitro cell culture models provide a useful tool for their initial assessment. Since ingestion is the most common route of mycotoxin exposure, the intestinal epithelial barrier comprised of epithelial cells (IECs) and immune cells such as macrophages, represents ground zero where mycotoxins are absorbed, biotransformed, and elicit toxicity. This article aims to review different in-vitro IEC or co-culture models that can be used for assessing mycotoxin exposure, toxicity, and risk mitigation, and their suitability and limitations for the safety assessment of animal foods and food by-products.Amynthas triastriatus (Oligochaete Megascolecidae) is a widely distributed endemic species in Southern China. To shed light on the population genetic diversity and to elucidate the population differentiation and dispersal of A. triastriatus, a population genetic structure study was undertaken based on samples from 35 locations collected from 2010 to 2016. Two exclusive lineages within A. triastriatus-lineage A and lineage B-were revealed. Lineage A was mainly distributed at high altitudes while lineage B was mainly distributed at low altitudes in Southeast China. The genetic diversity indices indicated that the populations of A. triastriatus had a strong genetic structure and distinct dispersal histories underlying the haplogroups observed in this study. Combined with morphological differences, these results indicated a new cryptic subspecies of A. triastriatus. Lineage A was almost degenerated to parthenogenesis and lineage B had a trend to parthenogenesis, which suggested that parthenogenesis could be an internal factor that influenced the differentiation and dispersal of A. triastriatus. The divergence time estimates showed that A. triastriatus originated around Guangxi and Guangdong provinces and generated into two main lineages 2.97 Ma (95% 2.17-3.15 Ma) at the time of Quaternary glaciation (2.58 Ma), which suggested that the Quaternary glaciation may have been one of main factors that promoted the colonization of A. triastriatus.With a rapidly changing climate, new leaders must be trained to understand and act on emerging environmental threats. In California's Imperial Valley, a collaborative of community members, researchers, and scientists developed a community air monitoring network to provide local residents with better air quality information. To expand the reach of the project and to prepare the next generation of youth leaders we developed an internship program to increase environmental health literacy and civic leadership. In the 10-week program, high school students learned about air quality science, respiratory health, community air monitoring, and policies intended to improve air quality. The students learned to present this information to their peers, neighbors, family, and community leaders. The program used participatory approaches familiar to community-engaged research to center the students' experience. Surveys and interviews with the students were used to assess the program and found that the students became more familiar with air quality policies, increased their ability to use air monitoring resources, and increased their own confidence in their ability to effect change.
