  • The relationships between modeled TVOC/NOx ratios and O3 reductions, as well as the titration effect, were also discussed. The model results provided useful references for the mitigation strategy of ozone reduction in Lanzhou and other major cities in northwest China with similar climate and topography conditions. The present study assessed the association between phthalate exposure and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) polymerase γ (POLG) methylation along with the potential effect on the characteristics of body fat in children. A total of 152 children were enrolled. The urinary concentrations of phthalate metabolites were measured using ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Genomic DNA was extracted from the buffy coat, and bisulfite-treated DNA was subjected to a pyrosequencing assay. In total, 17 CpG sites in the exon 2 region of POLG were included in the analysis. A multivariable regression model was applied to determine whether characteristics of body fat were associated with phthalate exposure and methylation of POLG. After adjustment for covariates, male children with a ten-fold increase in mono-methyl phthalate (MMP) or mono-benzyl phthalate (MBzP) concentrations had significantly higher measurements for total body fat (MMP β = 6.47%; MBzP β = 3.54%), and trunk fat (MMP β = 6.67%; MBzP β = 3.90%). Male children who had hypermethylation at the 2nd CpG site in exon 2 of POLG also had high measurements for BMI (β = 1.66 kg/m2), waist (β = 4.49 cm) and hip (β = 4.81 cm) circumference, total body fat (β = 5.48%), and trunk fat (β = 6.21%). A dose-response relationship existed between methylation at the 2nd CpG site in exon 2 of POLG and characteristics of body fat (p for trend less then 0.01). This study suggested that male children who are exposed to phthalic acid esters have high body weight, BMI, and body and trunk fat percentages. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/arn-509.html Methylation of the exon 2 region of POLG is a possible mechanism behind the causal effect of endocrine-disrupting substances.Organic amines are one of the most important nitrogen-containing compounds in the atmosphere, and their reactions with tropospheric ozone contribute significantly to the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA). However, the chemical pathways of their reaction with atmospheric ozone are poorly understood. This study investigates the atmospheric ozonolysis mechanism of two typical organic amines-diethylamine and triethylamine using experimental and theoretical methods. Intermediate results from GC-MS and PTR-TOF-MS analysis confirm the formation of eight and eleven nitrogen- and oxygen-containing products during the ozonolysis of diethylamine and triethylamine, respectively. N-ethylethanimine (56.5% in average) or acetaldehyde (64.9% in average) is formed as the dominant product from the ozonolysis of each organic amine. Ozonolysis pathway results indicate that the conversion to N-ethylethanimine is the dominant pathway for diethylamine ozonolysis. At the same time, triethylamine prefers the initial transformation to diethylamine with the discharge of acetaldehyde and then converts to N-ethylethanimine. Higher SOA mass concentration is obtained from the ozonolysis of triethylamine than diethylamine, probably because the former releases a larger amount of intermediate products, especially acetaldehyde. Our results provide a deep insight into the atmospheric processing of organic amines via ozonolysis and the implications of this mechanism for SOA formation.A biomimetic Egeria-densa-like hybrid composite nanofiber membrane was fabricated to degrade organic pollutants in water, with PVDF nanofibers as stems to provide support, and ZnO nanowires as leaves to provide active sites. The Sm-doped ZnO nanowires@PVDF nanofiber membranes were characterized by FE-SEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrometer. Compared with the pure ZnO nanowires@PVDF nanofiber membrane, the Sm-doped membrane showed higher photocatalytic performance. The excellent photocatalytic activity was attributed to the increased specific surface area and the decreased bandgap of ZnO nanowires after Sm doping, which inhibited the recombination rate of electrons and holes and improved the absorption of visible light. We found that the superoxide free radicals (O2-) played a critical role in photocatalytic degradation. The Sm-doped ZnO nanowires@PVDF nanofiber membrane exhibited good stability after 5 cycles of RhB degradation. We believe such Sm-doped hybrid membrane can work as an effective photocatalyst for wastewater treatment.Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been manufactured and used for over 50 years, and now are worldwide distributed in the environment. The atmospheric environment is the main compartment for PFASs to be transported and transformed, and relevant research has highlighted the global occurrence and impacts of atmospheric PFASs in ecosystems and human health. With the phasing-out and restriction of eight‑carbon chain-length (C8) PFASs in developed countries, China has become the largest producer of C8 PFASs since 2004. Subsequently, a number of studies on PFASs in the Chinese atmospheric environment have been conducted in the recent decade. This review documented twenty-eight studies on PFASs in Chinese outdoor air published to date. Methods of sampling, extraction, cleanup, and instrumental analysis were summarized for both ionic and neutral PFASs. Levels, compositions, and spatial distribution of PFASs from different areas in China (i.e. source, urban, and remote regions, and north versus south China) were compared and discussed. Leaves and tree barks were proposed as effective bioindicators to reflect the contamination status of atmospheric PFASs. Special attention can be given to non-target screening for future research directions. The evaluation of the importance of having accurate and representative stations in a network for river water quality monitoring is always a matter of concern. The minimal budget and time demands of water quality monitoring programme may appear very attractive, especially when dealing with large-scale river watersheds. This article proposes an improved methodology for optimising water quality monitoring network for present and forthcoming monitoring of water quality under a case study of the Selangor River watershed in Malaysia, where different monitoring networks are being used by water management authorities. Knowing that the lack of financial resources in developing countries like Malaysia is one of the reasons for inadequate monitoring network density, to identify an optimised network for cost-efficiency benefits in this study, a geo-statistical technique coupled Kendall's W was first applied to analyse the performance of each monitoring station in the existing networks under the monitored water quality parameters.

  • Results There were no significant changes in all blood and biochemical parameters in the PA non-increase group at the time of follow-up when compared with baseline levels. In the PA increase group, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and γ-guanosine triphosphate levels were all significantly lower at follow-up than they were at baseline. Body weight did not change significantly from baseline to follow-up in both groups. Conclusions In the present study, hepatic inflammation improvement was accompanied by increased PA but not decreased body weight. Increasing PA may be effective for the improvement of hepatic inflammation even without body weight loss. Our results indicate the effectiveness of PA monitoring for the management of NAFLD. Methods Adult patients in Tianjin Urban Employee Basic Medical Insurance database who initiated ≥2 prescriptions of statins from 2012 through 2013 were included and grouped into primary and secondary prevention subgroups according to their cardiovascular diseases (CVD) history during the prior 12-month baseline period. Proportion of days covered (PDC) was used to measure statin adherence in the initial 12-month follow-up. Clinical outcomes were measured by the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (****) during the 13th-24th months follow-up, and were compared between the patients with PDC ≥ 0.5 and patients with PDC less then 0urther exploration is needed for secondary prevention. Background Thromboembolic ischemic stroke (IS) is one of the most feared complications of left ventricular assist device (LVAD) placement and represents a challenge to surgical management because of concomitant anticoagulant therapy. Case presentation A 39-year-old man presented with cardiogenic shock following an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. After a period of stabilization, the patient was referred for LVAD placement. Upon recovery from anesthesia, he presented with acute neurological deficits suggestive of IS. A brain computed tomography confirmed the diagnosis, and an emergency decompressive hemicraniectomy (DHC) was performed. Anticoagulation was managed empirically. The patient's neurological status progressively improved and he was referred for heart transplantation at five months from DHC. One month later, cranioplasty was performed. Conclusions This report suggests an anticoagulation management approach in combination with decompressive craniectomy after IS in a patient with LVAD placement was successful. An optimized anticoagulation management and collaborative team-based practice may contribute to successful outcomes in complex cases. Background and objectives Early bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is one of the most important predictors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) survival. There is a dearth of literature on CPR engagement in countries such as Ghana, where cardiovascular events are increasingly prevalent. In this study, we sought to evaluate Ghanaians' knowledge of and attitudes towards bystander CPR, in the context of the country's nascent emergency medicine network. Methods Capitalizing on the growing ubiquity and use of social media across the country, we used a novel social media sampling strategy for this study. We created, pre-tested, and distributed an online survey, using the two most utilized social media platforms in Ghana WhatsApp and Facebook. An airtime data incentive of 5 US dollars, worth between 5 and 10 GB of cellular data based on mobile phone carrier, was provided as incentive. Inclusion criteria were (1) ≥ 18 years of age, (2) living in Ghana. Survey participants were encouraged to distribute aware of CPR than lay respondents (96.5% vs 68.1%; p less then 0.001). Eighty-five percent of respondents were aware that CPR involves chest compressions, and almost 70% indicated that "mouth to mouth" is a necessary component of CPR. Fewer than 10% were unwilling to administer CPR. Lack of skills (44.9%) and fear of causing harm (25.5%) were barriers noted by respondents for not administering CPR. Notably, a quarter of ambulance workers reported never having received CPR training. If they were to witness a collapse, 62.0% would call an ambulance, and 32.6% would hail a taxi. Conclusion The majority of participants are willing to perform CPR. Contextualized training that emphasizes hands-only CPR and builds participants' confidence may increase bystander willingness and engagement. Background While the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study reports headache disorders as the second-highest cause of disability worldwide, the headache data in GBD come very largely from adults. This national study in Lithuania was part of a global schools-based programme within the Global Campaign against Headache contributing data from children (7-11 years) and adolescents (12-17 years). Methods The methods followed the generic protocol for the global study. The basic study design was a cross-sectional survey. Self-completed structured questionnaires were administered, within classes, in 24 schools selected from seven regions of Lithuania to be nationally representative. Headache diagnostic questions were based on ICHD-3 beta criteria but for the inclusion of undifferentiated headache (UdH). Results Of 3714 potential participants, 2505 (children 1382 [55.2%], adolescents 1123 [44.8%]; males 1169 [46.7%], females 1336 [53.3%]) completed the questionnaire. Adolescents and males were therefore relatively under-nts of headache in these age groups. Background Headache is one of the most prevalent diseases. The Global Burden of Disease Study ranks it as the seventh most common disease overall and the second largest neurological cause of disability in the world. The "Do Not Do" recommendations are a strategy for increasing the quality of care and reducing the cost of care for headache. This study aimed to identify specific low-value practices in headache care, determine their frequency, and estimate the cost overrun that they represent, in order to establish "Do not Do" recommendations specifically for headache by consensus and according to scientific evidence. Methods This was a mixed methods research study that combined qualitative consensus-building techniques, involving a multidisciplinary panel of experts to define the "Do Not Do" recommendations in headache care, and a retrospective observational study with review of a randomized set of patient records from the past 6 months in four hospitals, to quantify the frequency of these "Do Not Do" practices.

  • Aging exerted minor influence on Sirt mRNA expression levels, both in transgene carriers and in their wild-type littermates, and there was no interaction between the presence of the transgene and aging. Furthermore, there was no difference between genders. The unequivocal cerebellar Sirtuin activation with presumed compensatory role suggests that the cerebellum might be another key player in HD in addition to the most severely affected striatum. The mitochondrially acting Sirt3 may serve as an interesting novel therapeutic target in this deleterious condition.Data-intensive science comes with increased risks concerning quality and reliability of data, and while trust in science has traditionally been framed as a matter of scientists being expected to adhere to certain technical and moral norms for behaviour, emerging discourses of open science present openness and transparency as substitutes for established trust mechanisms. By ensuring access to all available information, quality becomes a matter of informed judgement by the users, and trust no longer seems necessary. This strategy does not, however, take into consideration the networks of professionals already enabling data-intensive science by providing high-quality data. In the life sciences, biological data- and knowledge bases managed by expert biocurators have become crucial for data-intensive research. In this paper, I will use the case of biocurators to argue that openness and transparency will not diminish the need for trust in data-intensive science. On the contrary, data-intensive science requires a reconfiguration of existing trust mechanisms in order to include those who take care of and manage scientific data after its production. In 1869, Johann Friedrich Miescher discovered a new substance in the nucleus of living cells. The substance, which he called nuclein, is now known as DNA, yet both Miescher's name and his theoretical ideas about nuclein are all but forgotten. This paper traces the trajectory of Miescher's reception in the historiography of genetics. To his critics, Miescher was a "contaminator," whose preparations were impure. Modern historians portrayed him as a "confuser," whose misunderstandings delayed the development of molecular biology. Each of these portrayals reflects the disciplinary context in which Miescher's work was evaluated. Using archival sources to unearth Miescher's unpublished speculations-including an analogy between the hereditary material and language, and a speculation that a series of asymmetric carbon atoms could account for hereditary variation-this paper clarifies the ways in which the past was judged through the lens of contemporary concerns. It also shows how organization, structure, function, and information were already being considered when nuclein was first discovered nearly 150 years ago.In the present work we report crack patterns formed in aqueous Laponite® gel in a rectangular box, while exposed to a uniform static electric field. The crack pattern shows a very interesting tree-like geometry extending from the positive to the negative electrode. At the positive electrode a large number of cracks appear at first and merge with each other in stages thus forming tree-like fractal structures. These structures are reminiscent of the Bethe lattice or Cayley tree. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/cpi-444.html The "trees" divide the system into peds of varying size, with numerous smaller ones on the positively charged end, gradually increasing in size, and decreasing in number towards the negative end. If the cumulative distribution of the number of peds exceeding a certain area in size, is plotted against that area, a power-law relation is obtained. This implies a scale-invariant fractal character of the pattern. For a given system size, the exponent of the power-law has a nearly constant value for different applied voltages. We present an experimental study demonstrating this behaviour and discuss how it compares with similar distributions of river-basin areas and viscous fingers in a Hele-Shaw cell.We stratified patients with newly diagnosed acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) according to a white blood cell (WBC) count of ≥ 3 × 109/L (high risk) or less then 3 × 109/L (low risk) before administering risk-adapted chemotherapy in combination with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA). In total, 27 low-risk and 23 high-risk patients were assigned to receive induction and three courses of consolidation with ATRA and anthracycline, followed by 2-year maintenance regimen. High-risk group additionally received cytarabine during 1st consolidation and another one-shot idarubicin treatment during 3rd consolidation. We prospectively monitored measurable residual disease (MRD) after induction and each consolidation. In the low-risk and high-risk groups, 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rates were 86.5% and 81.2% (p = 0.862), and 5-year overall survival rates were 100% and 84.8% (p = 0.062), respectively. In the MRD-negative and MRD-positive groups, 5-year DFS rates were 91.7% and 78.4% (p = 0.402) and 84.7% and 60.0% (p = 0.102) after induction and 1st consolidation, respectively. Relapse rates were 8.3% and 13.3% (p = 0.570) and 9.0% and 40.0% (p = 0.076) after induction and 1st consolidation, respectively. Achieving MRD-negativity after 1st consolidation, rather than after induction, was a potential predictor of relapse and DFS in patients with APL treated with ATRA + chemotherapy.Although follicular lymphoma (FL) is a pathological entity characterized by relatively uniform histological and molecular findings, its clinical course is highly variable. Establishment of therapeutic strategies based on a simple and practical prognostic model is important. C-reactive protein (CRP) is an adverse prognostic marker for various tumors and aggressive lymphomas. However, the significance of serum CRP levels as a prognostic index in low-grade lymphomas, such as FL, has not been thoroughly investigated. We retrospectively analyzed the relationship between serum CRP levels at diagnosis and the prognosis in patients with FL (n = 61) undergoing rituximab-containing chemotherapy. Elevated CRP levels showed a significant association with elevated fibrinogen (P = 0.002) in univariate analysis. Patients with higher CRP levels (> 5 mg/L) had a significantly shorter progression-free survival in multivariate analysis (P = 0.044). We concluded that serum CRP levels are important in prognostic stratification of patients with FL.

  • Many wild mushroom species are known to immune heavy metals. However, the mechanism by which this occurs remains largely unsolved. Melatonin (MT) has been proven to play an important defensive role against various abiotic stresses in plants and animals. This study reports on the presence of MT in edible fungi and its role in the response to cadmium (Cd)-induced stress. We found that melatonin was widely distributed in all experimental species and could also relieve Cd-induced damage in the Volvariella volvacea. Comparative metabolic and proteome analyses reveal that tryptophan/proline/tyrosine metabolism, the citrate cycle, nitrogen and glutathione metabolism, and oxidation-reduction processes were enriched after Cd and/or MT addition, indicating an antioxidant mechanism was aroused. Finally, different MT and cadmium treatments were studied for their effects on the expression and activity of oxidation-related enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, etc), which further verified the ameliorative influence of MT on Cd-induced oxidative stress. Background Maternal prenatal stress associates with infant developmental outcomes, but the mechanisms underlying this association are not fully understood. Alterations in the composition and function of infant intestinal microbiota may mediate some of the observed health effects, a viewpoint that is supported by animal studies along with a small human study showing that exposure to prenatal stress modifies the offspring's intestinal microbiota. In the current study, we aim to investigate the associations between maternal prenatal psychological distress (PPD) and hair cortisol concentration (HCC) with infant fecal microbiota composition in a large prospective human cohort. Methods The study population was drawn from FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study. Maternal PPD was measured with standardized questionnaires (EPDS, SCL, PRAQ-R2, Daily Hassles) three times during pregnancy (n = 398). A measure addressing the chronicity of PPD was composed separately for each questionnaire. HCC was measured from a five cm segment at gestational week 24 (n = 115), thus covering the early and mid-pregnancy. Infant fecal samples were collected at the age of 2.5 months and analyzed with 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Results Maternal chronic PPD (all symptom measures) showed positive associations (FDR less then 0.01) with bacterial genera from phylum Proteobacteria, with potential pathogens, in infants. Further, chronic PPD (SCL, PRAQ-R2, and Daily Hassles negative scale) associated negatively with Akkermansia. HCC associated negatively with Lactobacillus. Neither maternal chronic PPD nor HCC associated with infant fecal microbiota diversity. Conclusion Chronic maternal PPD symptoms and elevated HCC associate with alterations in infant intestinal microbiota composition. In keeping with the earlier literature, maternal PPD symptoms were associated with increases in genera fromProteobacteria phylum. Further research is needed to understand how these microbiota changes are linked with later child health outcomes.Elasmobranchs are particularly prone to accumulating contaminants due to their life history patterns and relatively high trophic position. However, several compounds, especially contaminants of emerging concern, have still not been well studied in this group. Here, we aimed to determine the occurrence and concentrations of several inorganic and organic contaminants in different tissues of the Brazilian guitarfish Pseudobatos horkelii. This species is a critically endangered species, endemic from the Southwest Atlantic which uses southern Brazilian waters as a nursery habitat. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), emerging pesticides, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) and trace metals were determined in five biological tissues in order to assess the accumulation and organotropism of these compounds. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ck-666.html Except for chlorothalonil and triclosan, all compounds were detected in, at least, one tissue, mostly in liver samples. All compounds differed among tissues, with liver presenting the higher concentrations of several contaminants, followed by muscle and gills. PAHs and PPCPs were the most detected analytes and presented the highest concentrations among tissues. Diclofenac levels were determined, for the first time in elasmobranchs, and were relatively high, when compared to other fishes. Finally, relatively high concentrations of PAHs, dichlofluanid and octocrylene in muscle might be suggestive of chronic exposure, presenting also human health implications. Regarding trace metals, contrary to most elasmobranch studies, Hg levels were low in all tissues, whereas Cd and Pb here higher in liver, and gills and blood samples, respectively. Our results indicate that P. horkelii is exposed to several organic and inorganic which might affect this species in a long-term scale. Concerning the determination of emerging contaminants, it is likely that other elasmobranchs are also exposed to these compounds and special attention should be given to this issue in order to predict future effects on this group.River sediments contain environmental fingerprints that provide useful ecological information. However, the geochemistry of River Atuwara sediments has received less attention over the years. One hundred and twenty-six sediments from 21 locations were collected over a two-season period from River Atuwara, and a detailed investigation of the land use and land cover (LULC) change between 1990 and 2019, analysis of selected toxic and potentially toxic metal(oid)s (TPTM) (Cu, As, Cd, Pb, Ni, Cr, Zn, Fe, Co and Al) using ICP-OES, pollution index assessment, potential source identification (using center log-transformation approach), potential ecological, and human health risk assessment were conducted. The results of the LULC change revealed that the built-up area increased by 95.58 km2, at an average rate of 3.186 km2/year over the past 30 years. The mean concentration of metal(oid)s increased in the order of Cd Fe for both seasons and the carcinogenic risk for children via ingestion route presented a value higher than the safe limits for As, Cd, Cr, and Ni during both seasons.

  • Although ambipolar materials are highly studied in organic electronics, they are rarely used in gas sensors. In the present work, we studied ammonia sensing on organic heterojunctions in a bilayer configuration composed of octachlorinated metallophthalocyanines (M(Cl8Pc); ****, Cu, and Zn) as a sublayer and lutetium bis-phthalocyanine (LuPc2) as a top layer. Despite the small effect of metal atom in M(Cl8Pc) on the device current and the interfacial energy barrier, a strong effect on the NH3 sensing behavior was found such that Co(Cl8Pc)-, Cu(Cl8Pc)-, and Zn(Cl8Pc)-based devices exhibited n-type, p-type, and ambipolar charge carrier transport, respectively. Variable carrier transport has been explained by charges hopping at the interface and subsequent heterojunction formation. In particular, the ambipolar transport regime in Zn(Cl8Pc)-based devices is triggered by the chemical doping from NH3 and water when the device is exposed longer under NH3 at high humidity turning it n-type. Gas sensing studies performed in a wide concentration range of NH3 at a variable relative humidity (rh) exhibited very high sensitivity of these devices. The best performance is obtained with Co(Cl8Pc)-based devices demonstrated by a very high relative response (13% at 10 ppm NH3) and sensitivity (1.47%.ppm-1), sub-ppm limit of detection (250 ppb), and negligible interference from rh. Such superior sensing characteristics based on a new heterojunction device make it an ideal NH3 sensor for real application. For the practical application of perovskite solar cells (PSC), it is desirable to have high efficiency, long-term stability, and low manufacturing cost. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/cepharanthine.html Therefore, it is required to develop inexpensive and well-performing hole-transporting materials (HTMs). In this study, we synthesized SFXDAnCBZ, which is a new carbazole-based spiro[fluorene-9,9'-xanthene] (SFX) derivative, where the central core and end-cap units consist of SFX and N3,N6-bis(di-4-anisylamino)-9H-carbazole (DAnCBZ), respectively, as an efficient and low-cost HTM for PSCs. Photoluminescence quenching at the SFXDAnCBZ/perovskite interface was more effective than at the perovskite/Spiro-OMeTAD (2,2',7,7'-tetrakis-(N,N-di-p-methoxy-phenyl-amine) 9,9'spiro-bifluorene) interface. We fabricated a PSC with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.87% under 1 sun illumination (100 mW cm-2) using SFXDAnCBZ as an HTM. This value is comparable to that measured for the benchmark Spiro-OMeTAD. Thus, this result confirms that SFX core-based materials can be a new kind of HTMs for high-efficiency and low-cost PSCs.Polymer hexosomes are block copolymer solution morphologies that adopt an internal structure composed of an inverse hexagonal (HII) phase. To date, most polymer hexosomes are reportedly rotationally symmetric solid structures that possess a common feature where hexagonally ordered inverted cylinders rotate along a central axis of symmetry to form circular hoops. Here, we report on the formation of polymer hexosomes whose inverted cylinders orient in an unusual manner, forming hoops that are noncircular. For topological reasons, this led to the generation of four defects in the resulting hexosome structure. We find that these defect-bearing hexosomes are hollow, thereby resembling polymer vesicles or polymersomes with an inverse hexagonal cylindrical morphology in the shell. The topological defects of these so-called "vesicular hexosomes" are enticing as they could serve as a platform to spatially anchor targeting ligands or biomolecules on the surface, while the hollow cylindrical shell and the vesicular lumen could spatially accommodate cargoes within the different domains. We propose that these vesicular hexosomes do not form via a conventional nucleation-growth self-assembly pathway, but rather via a two-step process involving first liquid-liquid phase separation followed by polymer microphase separation.ConspectusAtomic layer control of semiconductor processing is needed as critical dimensions are progressively reduced below the 10 nm scale. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) methods are meeting this challenge and produce conformal thin film growth on high aspect ratio features. Atomic layer etching (ALE) techniques are also required that can remove material with atomic layer precision. ALE processes are defined using sequential, self-limiting reactions based on surface modification and volatile release. Plasma ALE methods employ energetic ion or neutral species to release the modified material anisotropically using sputtering. In contrast, thermal ALE processes utilize gas species to release the modified material isotropically using thermal reactions. Thermal ALE can be viewed as the "reverse of ALD".There are a number of mechanisms for thermal ALE that have developed over the last five years. This Account will first examine the fluorination and ligand-exchange mechanism for thermal ALE. This mechanism is applicion processing technique.Nitrogenase is a key player in the global nitrogen cycle, as it catalyzes the reduction of dinitrogen into ammonia. The active site of the nitrogenase MoFe protein corresponds to a [MoFe7S9C-(R)-homocitrate] species designated FeMo-cofactor, whose biosynthesis and insertion requires the action of over a dozen maturation proteins provided by the NIF (for NItrogen Fixation) assembly machinery. Among them, the radical SAM protein NifB plays an essential role, concomitantly inserting a carbide ion and coupling two [Fe4S4] clusters to form a [Fe8S9C] precursor called NifB-co. Here we report on the X-ray structure of NifB from Methanotrix thermoacetophila at 1.95 Å resolution in a state pending the binding of one [Fe4S4] cluster substrate. The overall NifB architecture indicates that this enzyme has a single SAM binding site, which at this stage is occupied by cysteine residue 62. The structure reveals a unique ligand binding mode for the K1-cluster involving cysteine residues 29 and 128 in addition to histidine 42 and glutamate 65. The latter, together with cysteine 62, belongs to a loop inserted in the active site, likely protecting the already present [Fe4S4] clusters. These two residues regulate the sequence of events, controlling SAM dual reactivity and preventing unwanted radical-based chemistry before the K2 [Fe4S4] cluster substrate is loaded into the protein. The location of the K1-cluster, too far away from the SAM binding site, supports a mechanism in which the K2-cluster is the site of methylation.

  • Large bone defects or complex pseudarthrosis represent an interdisciplinary challenge. Established surgical procedures include autogenous cancellous bone graft, the Masquelet technique or bone transfer via segment transport as well as free microvascular bone transplantation. However, the successful use of all these techniques requires a specialized center with great interdisciplinary expertise. In the following case series we describe the technique of free fibula transplantation and additional allograft. In both cases a good functional result with full mechanical strength of the affected extremity and satisfactory patient comfort has been achieved. In the second case, implant failure with the necessity of revision endoprosthetics occurred during the procedure. Background The abdomen remains the most preferable donor site for autologous breast reconstruction. Many patients in this population will have had prior abdominal surgery, which is the chief risk factor for having a ventral hernia. While prior studies have examined the impact of prior abdominal surgery on breast reconstruction, limited data exist on the management of patients with a preexisting ventral hernia. The objective of this study was to investigate outcomes of performing ventral hernia repair concurrent with abdominally based microsurgical breast reconstruction. Methods A 5-year retrospective review of patients undergoing abdominally based microsurgical breast reconstruction was performed. The experimental group consisted of patients with a preexisting ventral hernia that was repaired at the time of breast reconstruction, and was compared with a historical cohort of patients without preexisting hernias. Results There were a total of 18 and 225 patients in the experimental and control groups, respectively. There was a higher incidence of prior abdominal surgery in the experimental group (p = 0.0008), but no other differences. Mean follow-up was 20.5 ± 5.2 months. There were no instances of recurrent hernia or flap loss in the experimental group. https://www.selleckchem.com/screening/fda-approved-drug-library.html No significant differences were observed between the experimental and control groups in the incidence of donor-site complications (27.8 vs. 20.9%, respectively; p = 0.55), recipient site complications (27.8 vs. 24.0%, respectively; p = 0.78), operative time (623 ± 114 vs. 598 ± 100 minutes, respectively; p = 0.80), or length of stay (3.4 ± 0.5 vs. 3.1 ± 0.4 days, respectively; p = 0.98). Conclusion Concurrent ventral hernia repair at the time of abdominally based microsurgical breast reconstruction appears to be safe and effective. Larger studies are needed to further define this relationship.Medical biobanking is concerned with establishing and maintaining large-scale repositories of biological specimens combined with comprehensive archives of clinical and biographical information on donors. This aims for controlled high and consistent quality of specimens for future biomedical research. One major objective is to assemble multiple blood components for various types of biochemical analysis and experimentation including different isolated cell types. With proper cryo-conservation, blood-derived cells can be conserved and revitalized after thawing and employed as in-vitro cell models carrying specific biological traits of donors. Optimizing pre-analytical methods can reduce pre-analytical variance thereby reducing imprecision of analytical data. This is particularly valuable for multivariate analyses of biological systems ("omics") and biomarker research. Introducing biobanking to psychiatry carries the challenge of making diagnostic allocation more compatible with biological entities than is achieved with current diagnostic categories of ICD-10 or DSM-V. Diagnostic or transdiagnostic subgroups can be stratified using biologically anchored clinical criteria. An important ethical issue of biobanking is the need for broad consent by the donors for specimen use in not yet defined future research projects. The organizational, logistic and financial costs of establishing and maintaining a biobank are considerable, but seem well warranted in view of the gainable advances in biomedical research quality, translations and clinical applications. Background By identifying occupational problems, job-related therapies may be included in rehabilitation at an early stage, increasing the return-to-work rate. The aim of the present study was to examine whether occupational problems that were identified were associated with the employment status six months after inpatient rehabilitation. Methods A total of 122 neurological patients undergoing neurological inpatient rehabilitation at the BDH-Clinic Hessisch Oldendorf were retrospectively analysed using clinical routine data from the database of the clinic. Occupational problems were identified with the help of a self-assessment (Wuerzburg Screening [WS]) and an ICF-compliant medical assessment (d850) at the beginning of neurological rehabilitation. In addition, data about the employment status six months after rehabilitation were collected. Results While the BPL identified in the WS was associated with the employment status at the time of follow-up (r=-0.288; p=.007), there was no relationship between the medical assessment of occupational impairment and the employment status. In binary logistic regression models for predicting the employment status, the duration of the incapacity to work, age, gender and an interdisciplinary assessment at the end of rehabilitation proved to be predictors for the employment status. Conclusion Occupational problems are associated with occupational reintegration six months after discharge from neurological inpatient rehabilitation. Since occupational problems are taken into account in the treatment planning, the impact on the return to work rate may be underestimated in the current study.Easier access to prenatal diagnostic procedures led to its widespread use as a screening measure. Hence, today it is more common for life-limiting illnesses to be diagnosed during fetal life. The concept of Advance Care Planning (ACP) provides a framework for caregivers, families and their multidisciplinary teams to anticipate and plan ahead for potential future medical decisions so that the affected children are reliably treated according to their parents' individual values and wishes. In the perinatal context, ACP also has the potential to tackle the needs of unborn or newborn children with life-limiting illnesses and their families better, avoid unnecessary and burdensome measures and focus upon goals that are valuable and meaningful to both child and family.

According to the international registration of pancreas transplantation center, the global total pancreas transplantation has reached more than 80,000 cases by 2017, including pure pancreas transplantation and simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPK). With the development and application of a new type of immunosuppressant, with the gradual maturity of organ preservation technology and surgical technology, the pancreas transplantation has rapidly on a global scale. However, pancreas transplantation still has more problems than limit its development compared with other organ transplantation. For example, the early diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic rejection are of considerable significance to the prognosis of pancreas transplantation. Some surveillance methods of diagnosis have been used increasingly, among which the histopathological diagnosis is particularly important. The first Banff schema for the histological diagnosis of pancreas rejection has been published, which primarily dealt with the diagnosis of acute T-cell-mediated rejection (ACMR). In recent years, antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) has been more emphasized as the primary cause of graft failure. The Banff pancreas allograft rejection grading schema was updated in 2011 by a broad-based multidisciplinary panel, presenting comprehensive guidelines for the diagnosis of AMR. 2019 Gland Surgery. Prior to this, conventional surgical options were limited to either a mastectomy or breast conserving surgery. The demand for better aesthetic outcomes had driven the development of oncoplastic breast conserving surgery where glandular rearrangement or replacement coupled with thoughtfully placed incisions became the standard approach to breast conserving surgery. As breast surgeons and patients demand for improved aesthetic outcomes, minimally invasive or minimal access breast surgery has gained **** attention over the past two decades, from endoscopic assisted to robotic-assisted breast surgery more recently. However, there has been a lack of review articles discussing this relatively recent but under-reported subset of surgical techniques in the management of breast cancer. This article aims to discuss the concept and development of minimal access breast surgery along with a review of current literature on its indications, techniques and outcome measures as well as a discussion on the strengths, limitations as well as future directions. Continued improvement in techniques and advancement of technology will definitely increase the likelihood of minimal access techniques being placed as the standard of care in the management of breast cancer. 2019 Gland Surgery. Methods In total, 69 patients who underwent total mastectomy, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and immediate prosthetic breast reconstruction from January 2015 to December 2018 in our hospital were selected, and their cosmetic effects, complications, and quality of life after reconstruction were recorded immediately after surgery and 6 months after surgery. Results Of these 69 patients, 29 were in the simple prosthesis group and 40 in the prosthesis + TCPM group. The incidence of surgical complications was 17.2% in the simple prosthesis group (5/29; including 4 cases of capsular contracture and 1 case of infection) 15.0% in the prosthesis + TCPM group (6/40; 1 case of flap necrosis, 2 cases of poor wound healing, 2 cases of hematomas, and 1 case of inadequaction with prosthesis combined with TCPM does not increase surgical complications and has a good cosmetic effect and high patient satisfaction. Thus, it is a safe and reconstruction method. 2019 Gland Surgery. High risk rates of perioperative complications make minimally invasive ablative techniques a novel perspective and alternative treatment option for pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. This study aims to present the first experience of using a microwave ablation in management of pNETs. Methods Sechenov University has an experience of treating more than 400 patients with hormone-producing tumors of the pancreas, 7 of which were treated by microwave ablation (MWA). Results In all patients that underwent MWA, a regression of hormonal symptomatic was achieved. Two patients required readmission a month later for draining of pseudocyst and abscess. Conclusions The exact role of microwave ablation in the treatment of non-metastatic pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors has not been defined yet. There is a lack of large prospective randomized studies and the reason for this is that local tumor destruction is indicated in selected cases only, thus making it difficult to analyze a large group of patients and assess long-term results of the treatment. However, microwave ablation allows to take a better control of symptoms in patients with hormone overproduction and in those with high risk of postoperative complications. 2019 Gland Surgery. • The role of inflammation in thrombotic complications of primary antiphospholipid syndrome (PAPS) is controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate levels of inflammation and coagulation markers in patients with thrombotic PAPS (t-PAPS). Patients with t-PAPS and individuals with no history of thrombosis were enrolled. The association of t-PAPS with levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interferon (IFN)-α, interleukins (IL)-6, -8, factor VIII (FVIII), von Willebrand factor (VWF) and tissue factor (TF) was evaluated by regression models. The levels of these markers were also compared between controls and subgroups of t-PAPS patients with triple positivity, recently diagnosed thrombosis, recurrent thrombosis and venous thrombosis. Patients with t-PAPS (n = 101) had a 8.6-fold increased levels of TNF-α, 90% increased levels of hs-CRP, 80% increased levels of IL-6, 30% increased levels of FVIIIAg, 50% increased levels of VWF and 66% increased levels of TF as compared to controls (n = 131), and the differences did not change after adjustments for sex, age and cardiovascular risk factors. Inflammatory markers were elevated in t-PAPS regardless of the aPL profile, number of previous thrombosis or time elapsed since diagnosis. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/sulfatinib.html TNF-α and IL-8 levels were higher in t-PAPS patients with venous thrombosis, in comparison with those with arterial thrombosis and controls. Patients with t-PAPS presented with increased levels of inflammatory and coagulation markers, which suggests that t-PAPS is associated not only with hypercoagulability but also with a persistent inflammatory state.Introduction To assess real-world effectiveness of linagliptin in persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) across a range of ages and renal function. Effectiveness was assessed in different races, with a focus on African Americans (AA). Methods This was a non-interventional retrospective cohort study using data in the Optum clinical database from adults with T2DM initiating linagliptin. Date of the first linagliptin prescription was the index date. Outcomes included change in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and the percentage of persons achieving an HbA1c less then 7% (53 mmol/mol) during the 60-180 days following linagliptin initiation. Analyses of age by renal function were conducted. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to assess change in HbA1c, controlling for an a priori list of covariates. Results Overall, 11,001 persons were included. Mean pre-index HbA1c value was 8.2% (66 mmol/mol), with higher levels in younger versus older persons and AAs versus other race groups. Persons initiating linagliptin had an average HbA1c reduction of 0.51% (5.6 mmol/mol). Without adjusting for age, renal function, race, and pre-index HbA1c, greater reductions in HbA1c were observed in younger versus older persons, persons with higher versus lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and AAs versus white or Asians. After multivariate analysis, variables significantly associated with a greater HbA1c reduction included higher pre-index HbA1c and older age. Conclusions These results support the HbA1c-lowering effectiveness of linagliptin across age, race, and renal function categories among a large real-world population of adults with T2DM.Purpose of review This review was conducted to gain insight into the history, present and future of bariatric and/or metabolic surgery and endoscopic treatments of obesity. The challenges that have been overcome, the challenges we still face and our recommendations for the future are discussed. Recent findings Over the last few decades, a number of treatment strategies have emerged for the treatment of obesity. Both endoscopic and surgical options are available and they lead to significant weight loss and comorbidity reduction. However, to remain a credible treatment alternative to the obesity pandemic, we need to perform these procedures in **** larger numbers than we currently do. Even though significant gains have been made in reducing the morbidity and mortality of surgical interventions, there is further room for improvement, especially when it comes to long-term issues. Due to its impact on almost every single organ system in the human body, bariatric surgery has attracted the attention of academics from a variety of medical disciplines. This has led to a rapidly enlarging body of high-quality scientific literature, supporting its wider use and cost-effectiveness. Conclusion Despite the advances made in bariatric surgery, the criteria determining suitability of patients for bariatric surgery in most parts of the world are still based on a consensus agreed upon in the USA in 1991. There is a need to formulate some new consensus and guidelines that would allow for a significant expansion of the pool of patients that can be offered these procedures. In June 2019, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued its final Guidance on submission of advertising and promotional materials to the Office of Prescription Drug Promotion (OPDP) in eCTD format through the electronic gateway. Our goal was to put in place a stepwise plan and clear process to submit these materials in advance of June 2021 when electronic submissions become mandatory. The first step was to test every submission type and every possible iteration, therefore, as issues arose, problems could be easily addressed and resolved. This helped build confidence and achieve a level of comfort in preparing for the first eSubmission. To accomplish this, testing was performed through the gateway including Form FDA 2253 (and accompanying promotional materials), advisory comments (launch and non-launch), enforcement actions, multiproduct submissions (grouped and ungrouped), and information request responses. The second step was to obtain internal alignment between involved functional areas to pilot a single brand. Finally, after a successful pilot program, eCTD submissions were expanded across all other brands. This paper discusses the stepwise approach taken, considerations for electronic submissions and results for improved efficiencies and cost savings. Implementing a well, laid-out plan, and starting the conversion early, allowed us to be thoughtful in our approach. The steps taken, and the successful outcomes achieved, demonstrate that there is no reason to wait for submitting promotional materials via the FDA gateway.

  • Digital innovation changed the daily living impacting Quality of Life of individuals. Our study was focused on adult and elder behavioural approach to the technology. Out study aimed to investigate the impact of technology use in not digital native in order to investigate the behavioural degree of adaptation. An observational study was conducted on adult and old subjects (age range 50-67 years) measuring computer anxiety and technology use ability variables identifying the indexes for technophobia risk in digital living. Not digital native subjects and more older ones appeared being influenced by technophobia features because of feeling themselves as inadequate in the management of technology. Oneway ANOVA and then Bonferroni's post-hoc analysis showed that non-autonomous (p less then 0.01), low-frequency (p less then 0.01), and feelingneed- for-help users (p less then 0.01) had higher levels of computer anxiety. No significant effect was in gender distribution. Finally, social networking seems related better use of technology and lower anxiety for digital solutions. Our findings highlight technophobia as a possible new risk factor for not digital native because it can affect their daily life through lower adherence to digital solutions; rather than aging successfully, they could develop fragile ageing. More, they seemed inadequate to use the digital solutions for better living in aging. In 1977 Korchinski presented a new type of shock discontinuity in conservation laws. These singular solutions were coined δ-shocks since there is a time dependent Dirac delta involved. A naive description is that such δ-shock is of the overcompressive type a single shock wave belonging to both families, the four characteristic lines of which impinge into the shock itself. In this work, we open the fan of solutions by studying two-family waves without intermediate constant states but possessing central rarefactions or comprising δ-shocks.The stimulus evoked compound action potential, recorded from ex vivo nerve trunks such as the rodent optic and sciatic nerve, is a popular model system used to study aspects of nervous system metabolism. This includes (1) the role of glycogen in supporting axon conduction, (2) the injury mechanisms resulting from metabolic insults, and (3) to test putative benefits of clinically relevant neuroprotective strategies. We demonstrate the benefit of simultaneously recording from pairs of nerves in the same superfusion chamber compared with conventional recordings from single nerves. Experiments carried out on mouse optic and sciatic nerves demonstrate that our new recording configuration decreased the relative standard deviation from samples when compared with recordings from an equivalent number of individually recorded nerves. The new method reduces the number of animals required to produce equivalent Power compared with the existing method, where single nerves are used. Adopting this method leads to increased experimental efficiency and productivity. We demonstrate that reduced animal use and increased Power can be achieved by recording from pairs of rodent nerve trunks simultaneously. Background Urgent medications are regularly prescribed using the term "stat", which indicates that the medication should be administered within 30 min after it is ordered. However, many hospitals struggle to reliably administer stat medications within 30 min after they are ordered. This study involved developing and evaluating an automated intravenous dosage medication calculation tool (AIVDMCT) for reducing the time between the order and administration of stat medications to children at a pediatric emergency department (PED) in Saudi Arabia. Methods This prospective observational study evaluated data from before (June-December 2016) and after (June-December 2017) the AIVDMCT was implemented for high-risk medications in our PED. Patients were considered eligible if they were less then 14 years old, weighed less then 40 kg, and required stat intravenous (IV) medications at the PED of our tertiary care hospital. Results Implementation of the AIVDMCT significantly reduce the intervals between the time of order (TO) and the time of preparation (TP) (average time 8.05 ± 3.42 min) and between the TP and the time of administration (TA) (average time 3.74 ± 1.70 min). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/6-aminonicotinamide.html Furthermore, the interval from the TO to the TA was significantly reduced after the AIVDMCT was implemented (average time 11.79 ± 4.48 min, P less then 0.001). Conclusion The AIVDMCT was associated with a significant reduction in the interval from the TO to the TA. This increased the proportion of stat medications that were delivered within the 30-min target window.Heterogeneous photocatalysis has become a significant green technology for water treatment. The application of Nb2O5 catalyst for the photodegradation of contaminants has merged as an important tool to this process. Furthermore, it is known that catalytic phases supported on metal oxides are an alternative method for enhancing its activity. In this work, supported Nb2O5 on mixed oxides as catalyst was applied to degrade methylene blue dye, leading to almost 100% of dye degradation without the need of any additives, after only three hours of sunlight exposure. The effect of catalyst concentration, exposure time and light source were investigated. The best catalyst activity was found at 1.5 g L-1 and for higher catalyst concentrations the degradation was kept constant. Plausible intermediates of this degradation process were observed and characterized by NMR, LC/MS and CZE techniques. After degradation, the catalyst was recovered and could be further re-applied in other three reaction cycles without significant loss of catalytic activity.Angiomyofibroblastoma is a rare mesenchymal tumor usually originating from the vulva and vagina with only one reported case arising from fallopian tube. We describe a second case of tubal angiomyofibroblastoma treated successfully with laparoscopic complete resection.Increasing electricity capacity to support economic growth has become a national development priority in Indonesia. The construction of a power plant needs to consider not only economic but also social and environmental impacts because the government can choose between fossil-based and renewable energy-based power plants. Thus, the decision to invest in a particular type of power plant technology must consider sustainability criteria. Using the social accounting matrix, this study aimed to simulate the impacts of an investment in a coal-fired power plant and compare those to the impacts of investments in renewable energy-based plants (geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar). The simulation results revealed that geothermal and wind power plants required the most significant investment and would increase the gross domestic product by 0.67% and 0.66%, respectively, representing the highest net value added to the economy compared to that of the other power plant options. The construction of a wind power plant promotes employment the most, by 0.
Digital innovation changed the daily living impacting Quality of Life of individuals. • Knowledge discovery and information extraction of large and complex datasets has attracted great attention in wide-ranging areas from statistics and biology to medicine. Tools from machine learning, data mining, and neurocomputing have been extensively explored and utilized to accomplish such compelling data analytics tasks. However, for time-series data presenting active dynamic characteristics, many of the state-of-the-art techniques may not perform well in capturing the inherited temporal structures in these data. In this paper, integrating the Koopman operator and linear dynamical systems theory with support vector machines, we develop an ovel dynamic data mining framework to construct low-dimensional linear models that approximate the nonlinear flow of high-dimensional time-series data generated by unknown nonlinear dynamical systems. This framework then immediately enables pattern recognition, e.g., classification, of complex time-series data to distinguish their dynamic behaviors by using the trajectories generated by the reduced linear systems. Moreover, we demonstrate the applicability and efficiency of this framework through the problems of time-series classification in bioinformatics and healthcare, including cognitive classification and seizure detection with fMRI and EEG data, respectively. The developed Koopman dynamic learning framework then lays a solid foundation for effective dynamic data mining and promises a mathematically justified method for extracting the dynamics and significant temporal structures of nonlinear dynamical systems. To investigate the environmental impacts of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) while it was freshly processed (i.e. hot mixed asphalt or HMA) and after being subjected to weathering, three RAP materials, namely north-RAP, central-RAP, south-RAP, from three plants and one fresh HMA loose mix samples (Fresh-HMA) throughout New Jersey, USA underwent four different weathering processes including UV and precipitation weathering on unbounded RAP, UV and precipitation weathering on compacted RAP, weathering by heat and moisture cycles, and groundwater flow-through leaching. Batch experiments were conducted to mimic releasing of trace elements in weak acidic leachate from landfills. North-RAP and central-RAP released levels of Pb greater than the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) primary drinking water maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 15 μg/L. Novel two-column experiments (a RAP column followed by a soil column) were conducted to investigate the release of trace elements from RAP and the attenuation effect of soil on potential pollutants. The results of these experiments showed that pollutants released from RAPs such as Mn and Ni were largely attenuated in the soil. The results suggest that RAP can be used as an unbound material in environments except those acidic (i.e., pH less then 5 as in mines with sulfur-containing minerals and landfills with acidic environment). We examined how **** large-scale and localized upward and downward currents contribute to the substorm current wedge (SCW), and how they evolve over time, using the THEMIS all-sky imagers (ASIs) and ground magnetometers. One type of events is dominated by a single large-scale wedge, with upward currents over the surge and broad downward currents poleward-eastward of the surge. The other type of events is a composite of large-scale wedge and wedgelets associated with streamers, with each wedgelet having comparable intensity to the large-scale wedge currents. Among 17 auroral substorms with wide ASI coverage, the composite current type is more frequent than the single large-scale wedge type. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/arn-509.html The dawn-dusk size of each wedgelet is ~ 600 km in the ionosphere (~ 3.2 RE in the magnetotail, comparable to the flow channel size). We suggest that substorms have more than one type of SCW, and the composite current type is more frequent. The literature on Sri Lankan Diopsidae is reviewed. Eight Diopsidae are now known to occur in Sri Lanka, five species in the genus Teleopsis and one species each in the genera Sphyracephala, Diopsis, and Cyrtodiopsis. The presence of Cyrtodiopsis requires confirmation to exclude the possibility of mislabelling. All five Teleopsis species are endemic, as are the Diopsis species and probably the Cyrtodiopsis species. Only Sphyracephala bipunctipennis Senior-White has a larger distribution as it also occurs in India. A key is presented for the Diopsidae of Sri Lanka. Three Teleopsis species were already known to occur in Sri Lanka T. ferruginea Röder, T. krombeini Feijen and T. maculata Feijen. These species form the T. ferruginea species group. Two new species are now described for this group Teleopsis neglectasp. nov. and Teleopsis sororasp. nov.Teleopsis ferruginea is redescribed, as an earlier redescription turned out to be based on a series of specimens of its sister species T. sororasp. nov. The other three Diopsidae of Sri Lanka are listed and illustrated. Allometric aspects of the five Teleopsis species are discussed. Three Teleopsis species are sexually dimorphic with regard to eye span, while two species are monomorphic. It is assumed that sexual dimorphism developed independently in the T. ferruginea species group. This brings the number of known cases of independent development of sexual dimorphism in the Diopsidae to ten.One-hundred-eleven new provincial and territorial Coleoptera records are reported from New Brunswick (64), Nova Scotia (20), Prince Edward Island (5), Quebec (14), Manitoba (3), British Columbia (3), and Yukon Territory (2) for the 26 following families Carabidae, Dytiscidae, Histeridae, Staphylinidae, Scarabaeidae, Buprestidae, Eucnemidae, Elateridae, Cantharidae, Erotylidae, Monotomidae, Cryptophagidae, Passandridae (first record of this family from New Brunswick), Laemophloeidae, Nitidulidae, Anamorphidae, Coccinellidae, Latridiidae, Mordellidae, Tenebrionidae, Cerambycidae, Chrysomelidae, Anthribidae, Brentidae, Dryophthoridae, and Curculionidae.
