  • During the years 2015 and 2016, 113 patients with an UGA (unreferenced genomic alteration) were discussed in MTB. In this study, an optimization method for the groundwater exploitation layout in coastal areas was proposed. Based on the numerical simulation model of variable-density groundwater, a multiobjective groundwater management model was constructed with the objectives of maximizing groundwater exploitation and minimizing seawater intrusion. The optimization model was solved by nondominated sorted genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). To improve the computational efficiency of the optimization model, the surrogate models of the groundwater simulation model were built by using three different methods kriging, support vector regression (SVR), and kernel extreme learning machines (KELM). Finally, the above methods were tested in Longkou City of China. The results show that the use of surrogate models can greatly reduce the computing time for solving seawater intrusion management problems. The surrogate model of the variable-density groundwater simulation model based on the SVR method has the best performance. The groundwater exploitation layout optimized by the above method is reasonable and can reflect the actual hydrogeological conditions in the study area. This study provides a reliable way to optimize the groundwater exploitation layout in coastal areas.

In a go/no-go interception task human observers (n=42) judged whether a briefly-presented moving target would pass (interceptive hand movement required) or miss (no hand movement required) a strike box while their eye and hand movements were recorded. Go/no-go decision formation had to occur within the first few hundred milliseconds to allow time-critical interception. We found that the earliest time point at which eye movements started to differentiate actions (go vs. no-go) preceded hand movement onset. Moreover, eye movements were related to different stages of decision making. Whereas higher eye velocity during smooth pursuit initiation was related to more accurate interception decisions (whether or not to act), faster pursuit maintenance was associated with more accurate timing decisions (when to act). These results indicate that pursuit initiation and maintenance are continuously linked to ongoing sensorimotor decision formation.Stimulating cutaneous nerves, causing tactile sensations, reduces the perceived heaviness of an object, suggesting that either descending commands are facilitated or the perception of effort is reduced when tactile sensation is enhanced. In the current paper, we will review recent advances in this area and discuss the complexity of IL-10 manipulation for cancer therapy.Information about human papillomavirus (HPV) disease and its vaccination has been increasingly communicated and discussed on social media platforms. The current study aims to investigate the coverage of HPV-related information on one of the most popular Chinese social media - Zhihu. Data for this study were user-generated articles, which were identified and collected by a Python web crawler with keyword searching. The final sample included a total of 115 articles, covering a two-year period between 2017 and 2018. Each article was coded for several key characteristics, including HPV epidemiological information, health belief model (HBM) constructs, framing strategy, and responses to the article. Results suggested that most of the articles reported HPV's relationship to cervical cancer, HPV severity, and vaccination benefits. Thematic framing was more often used by the Zhihu articles to disseminate HPV-related issues, and a significant relationship between framing strategy and information coverage was found. The study has not only theoretically extended the literature of online HPV vaccine information coverage, but also practically suggested the needs to communicate comprehensive and detailed knowledge about HPV vaccination on Chinese social media.While the study of unconstrained movements has revealed important features of neural control, generalizing those insights to more sophisticated object manipulation is challenging. Humans excel at physical interaction with objects, even when those objects introduce complex dynamics and kinematic constraints. This study examined humans turning a horizontal planar crank (radius 10 cm) at their preferred and three instructed speeds (with visual feedback), both in clockwise and counterclockwise directions. To explore the role of neuro-mechanical dynamics, the instructed speeds covered a wide range fast (near the limits of performance), medium (near preferred speed), and very slow (rendering dynamic effects negligible). Because kinematically-constrained movements involve significant physical interaction, disentangling neural control from the influences of biomechanics presents a challenge. To address it, we modeled the interactive dynamics to 'subtract off' peripheral biomechanics from observed force and kinematic data, thereby estimating aspects of underlying neural action that may be expressed in terms of motion.

Many high-quality studies related to TCM for MetS have been conducted in recent years; however, no overall efficacy analysis has been reported. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of TCM against MetS, we reviewed randomized controlled trials of MetS published in the past decade and then selected and analyzed 16 high-quality articles from over 800 papers. The results showed that TCM might be beneficial in improving body weight as well as in regulating glucose and lipid metabolisms; thus, TCM might be an ideal alternative therapy for MetS management. Published by BMJ.BACKGROUND Despite obesity being a major risk factor for ischaemic stroke (IS), the association between body mass index (BMI) and IS in patients with hypertension remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE To assess the association between BMI and IS among elderly hypertensive patients in China. METHODS AND RESULTS We recruited 3500 hypertensive patients aged ≥60 between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2011 in China and ascertained their stroke status until December 2016. Multivariate Cox regression was used to evaluate the association between BMI and IS with interaction tests for exposure and covariates. A total of 3315 subjects (mean age 71.41±7.20 years, 44.5% were men) were included for data analysis. During an average follow-up period of 5.5 years, there were 206 onset cases (6.21%) of IS. When BMI was treated as a continuous variable, it was positively associated with the incidence of new onset IS (HR=1.14; 95% CI 1.05 to 1.34; p=0.005) after adjusting for potential confounders. Meanwhile, when BMI was treated as a categorical variable, the highest category (≥28 kg/m2) was strongly associated with an increased risk for IS compared with normal BMI category (18.5 to 24 kg/m2) (HR=1.36, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.80; p less then 0.001) in the fully adjusted model. Subgroup and interaction analysis also demonstrated that BMI independently associated with IS among males, smokers, alcohol drinkers, diabetic patients, people with uncontrolled blood pressure, decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate and those aged ≥70 years. This pilot study presents the findings of a real-time self-reporting tool to map a group of Foundation doctors' elective activities. Self-reporting is efficient, low cost to run and allows for repeated measures and scalability. It aimed to example how a time-map could be used by departments to address any work imbalances and improve both well-being and future workforce planning. METHOD Foundation doctors', at a busy District General Hospital, were asked to contemporaneously report their work activities over an 'elective' day. Outcomes measures included the mean duration per task and the time of day these were performed. RESULTS Nine Foundation doctors' returned 26 timesheet days. Foundation doctors' time was split between direct patient tasks (18.2%, 106.8 min per day), indirect patient tasks (72.9%, 428.6 min per day) and personal or non-patient activities. Indirect tasks were the most frequent reason for Foundation doctors leaving late. No clinical experience was recorded at all and only an average of 4% (23.4 min per day) of a Foundation doctors' time was spent in theatre. CONCLUSIONS This particular cohort performed a high proportion of indirect tasks. These have been associated with burnout. Time-mapping is a low-cost, acceptable and seemingly scalable way to elucidate a clearer understanding of the type of activities Foundation doctors may perform. Many high-quality studies related to TCM for MetS have been conducted in recent years; however, no overall efficacy analysis has been reported. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of TCM against MetS, we reviewed randomized controlled trials of MetS published in the past decade and then selected and analyzed 16 high-quality articles from over 800 papers. The results showed that TCM might be beneficial in improving body weight as well as in regulating glucose and lipid metabolisms; thus, TCM might be an ideal alternative therapy for MetS management. Published by BMJ.BACKGROUND Despite obesity being a major risk factor for ischaemic stroke (IS), the association between body mass index (BMI) and IS in patients with hypertension remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE To assess the association between BMI and IS among elderly hypertensive patients in China. METHODS AND RESULTS We recruited 3500 hypertensive patients aged ≥60 between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2011 in China and ascertained their stroke status until December 2016. Multivariate Cox regression was used to evaluate the association between BMI and IS with interaction tests for exposure and covariates. A total of 3315 subjects (mean age 71.41±7.20 years, 44.5% were men) were included for data analysis. During an average follow-up period of 5.5 years, there were 206 onset cases (6.21%) of IS. When BMI was treated as a continuous variable, it was positively associated with the incidence of new onset IS (HR=1.14; 95% CI 1.05 to 1.34; p=0.005) after adjusting for potential confounders. Meanwhile, when BMI was treated as a categorical variable, the highest category (≥28 kg/m2) was strongly associated with an increased risk for IS compared with normal BMI category (18.5 to 24 kg/m2) (HR=1.36, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.80; p less then 0.001) in the fully adjusted model. Subgroup and interaction analysis also demonstrated that BMI independently associated with IS among males, smokers, alcohol drinkers, diabetic patients, people with uncontrolled blood pressure, decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate and those aged ≥70 years. No patient underwent cardiac resynchronization therapy or required mechanical ventricular assistance. RESULTS At baseline, median (25th-75th) LVDD was 64 mm (59-70), and median LVEF was 33.2% (26.4-40.1). LVRR was detected in 24.5% of patients in a 40-month (26-64) median follow-up. In the LVRR group, LVDD decreased from 64mm (59-68) to 60 mm (56-65; p 0.05 for all comparisons). The Cox proportional hazard model analysis identified only cardiogenic shock (hazard ratio [HR] 2.41; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.51-3.85; p less then 0.001) and serum sodium level (hazard ratio, 0.91; 95% CI 0.86-0.96; p less then 0.001) as independent predictors of all-cause mortality. CONCLUSIONS Left ventricular reverse remodeling occurs in one quarter of patients with Chagas cardiomyopathy and have no impact on the outcome of patients with this condition.BACKGROUND Regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) is the recommended standard for continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). This study assesses its efficacy in patients admitted to critical care following cardiovascular surgery and the influence of standard antithrombotic agents routinely used in this specific group. METHODS Consecutive cardiovascular surgery patients treated with post-dilution hemofiltration with RCA were included in this prospective observational study. The primary outcome of the study was CRRT circuit life-span adjusted for reasons other than clotting. The secondary outcome evaluated the influence of standard antithrombotic agents (acetylsalicylic acid [ASA], low molecular weight heparin [LMWH] or fondaparinux as thromboprophylaxis or treatment dose with or without ASA) on filter life. RESULTS Fifty-two patients underwent 193 sessions of CVVH, after exclusion of 15 sessions where unfractionated heparin was administered. The median filter life span was 58 hours. Filter life span was significantly longer in patients receiving therapeutic dose of LMWH or fondaparinux (79 h [2-110]), in comparison to patients treated with prophylactic dose of LMWH or fondaparinux (51 h [7-117], p less then 0.001), and patients without antithrombotic prophylaxis (42 h [2-91], p less then 0.0001). 12 bleeding episodes were observed; 8 occurred in patients receiving treatment dose anticoagulation, 3 in patients receiving prophylactic dose anticoagulation and 1 in a patient with no antithrombotic prophylaxis. CONCLUSIONS A post dilution hemofiltration with RCA provides prolonged filter life span when adjusted for reasons other than clotting. The aim of this trial was to evaluate whether oral co-administration of an anti-opioid agent, naloxone, can be considered a successful approach to overcome 'the morphine effect'. METHODS Consecutive unstable angina patients receiving ticagrelor and morphine with or without orally administered naloxone underwent assessment of platelet reactivity using Multiplate analyzer as well as evaluation of the pharmacokinetic profile of ticagrelor and its active metabolite, AR-C124910XX, at nine pre-defined time points within the first 6 hours following oral intake of the ticagrelor loading dose. RESULTS The trial shows no significant differences regarding the pharmacokinetics of ticagrelor between both study arms throughout the study period. AR-C124910XX plasma concentration was significantly higher 120 min after the ticagrelor loading dose administration (p = 0.0417). However, the evaluation of pharmacodynamics did not show any statistically significant differences between the study arms. CONCLUSIONS To conclude, this trial shows that naloxone co-administration in ticagrelor-treated acute coronary syndrome patients on concomitant treatment with morphine shows no definite superiority in terms of ticagrelor pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profile.BACKGROUND We aim to study the association between QRS duration and mortality in our Asian heart failure cohort with HFpEF and HFrEF. All patients were followed-up for 5-7 years. Outcomes studied were overall mortality and cardiovascular mortality. RESULTS A total of 666 HFpEF and 1032 HFrEF were included. In patients with HFpEF, the 5-year overall and cardiovascular mortality was 57% (n=381) and 28% (n=189) respectively. QRS duration was a significant predictor of cardiovascular (adjusted HR 1.010 (95% CI1.002-1.018), p=0.011) but not overall mortality (p=0.190). In patients with HFrEF, the 5-year overall and cardiovascular mortality was 65% (n=673) and 43.0% (n=444). QRS duration was a significant predictor of both overall (adjusted HR 1.005 (95% CI1.001-1.008), p=0.004) and cardiovascular mortality (adjusted HR 1.006 (95% CI1.002-1.010), p=0.003). A cut-off of 100ms was found to provide the optimal discriminatory AUC in both cohorts. CONCLUSIONS In our Asian heart failure cohort, QRS duration is a significant predictor of cardiovascular mortality in both HFpEF and HFrEF patients.   • Error monitoring is crucial for the conscious error perception, however, the role of early error monitoring in error awareness remains unclear. Here, we investigated the relation between the ERN and error-related theta oscillations and the emergence of error awareness by conducting time- and phase-locked averaging analysis based on 4-8 Hz filtered data and phase-locked time frequency analysis. Results showed that while the ERN did not differ significantly between aware and unaware errors, theta power was stronger for aware errors than for unaware errors. Further, when continuous EEG was filtered outside the theta band, the ERN results confirmed this pattern. Additionally, when the non-phase-locked component was removed from continuous EEG, stronger theta power was still observed in aware errors compared to unaware errors. Collectively, these findings may suggest that (1) the ERN emerges from phase-locked component of theta band EEG activities; (2) the ERN engages in conscious error perception and serves the emerging error awareness through the activity of theta oscillations. Thus, early error monitoring is a precursor to error awareness, but this relationship is masked by high-frequency activity in aware errors when the ERN is not filtered outside the theta band in the Go/No-go task.This article has been retracted.The spleen is a large lymphoid organ located in the abdomen that filters blood and regulates the immune system. The extent of mobilization of splenic immune cells to peripheral tissues in health and disease, however, remains poorly understood. This is due, in large part, to a lack of in vivo, spleen-specific lineage tagging strategies. Here, we describe a detailed practical protocol of spleen transplantation and its evaluation for long-term graft survival. Unlike implantation of splenic morsels in the great omentum, our approach uses arterial and venous anastomoses which rapidly restores blood flow and facilitates long-term survival of the graft.     Error monitoring is crucial for the conscious error perception, however, the role of early error monitoring in error awareness remains unclear. Here, we investigated the relation between the ERN and error-related theta oscillations and the emergence of error awareness by conducting time- and phase-locked averaging analysis based on 4-8 Hz filtered data and phase-locked time frequency analysis. Results showed that while the ERN did not differ significantly between aware and unaware errors, theta power was stronger for aware errors than for unaware errors. Further, when continuous EEG was filtered outside the theta band, the ERN results confirmed this pattern. Additionally, when the non-phase-locked component was removed from continuous EEG, stronger theta power was still observed in aware errors compared to unaware errors. Collectively, these findings may suggest that (1) the ERN emerges from phase-locked component of theta band EEG activities; (2) the ERN engages in conscious error perception and serves the emerging error awareness through the activity of theta oscillations. The extent of mobilization of splenic immune cells to peripheral tissues in health and disease, however, remains poorly understood. This is due, in large part, to a lack of in vivo, spleen-specific lineage tagging strategies. Here, we describe a detailed practical protocol of spleen transplantation and its evaluation for long-term graft survival. Unlike implantation of splenic morsels in the great omentum, our approach uses arterial and venous anastomoses which rapidly restores blood flow and facilitates long-term survival of the graft. The adhesives were applied for 20 seconds and bonded with a resin Transbond XT (3M/ESPE). After this, the teeth were submitted to 20,000 cycles at 5°C and 55°C. Afterwards, the shear bond strength test was performed in a universal test machine (Instron 3342). The adhesive remnant index (ARI) was evaluated under a stereomicroscope at 10x magnification and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM, Hitachi 3030). The shear bond strength data were submitted to One-Way ANOVA (α = 0.05) and the ARI to the Kruskal-Wallis test (α = 0.05) and the ARI to the Kruskal-Wallis test (. There were 13 men and 56 women, and their mean age was 86.23 ± 7.02. Oral functions were measured and evaluated according to the Japanese insurance system. Data were analyzed by item response theory analysis, ROC analysis, and decision analysis. Results By the item response theory analysis, tongue pressure and swallowing functions had high discrimination ability. The subjects who had malfunction of the tongue and labium all had processed food. The subjects with difficulty in swallowing, even without malfunction of the tongue and labium, all had processed food. Ten rabbits received four titanium cylinders in their calvaria and randomly divided into the following groups Group I Bio-Oss (100%), Group II Bio-Oss (75%) + autogenous bone (25%), Group III Bio-Oss (50%) + autogenous bone (50%), and Group IV autogenous bone (100%). After twelve weeks, the animals were euthanized, and samples were collected for clinical and histological analysis. Results Clinical analysis showed that Groups I (90.43 ± 8.99) and II (90.87 ± 7.43) had greater dimensional stability compared to Group IV (P=0.0005). Histologically, Groups I, II, and III showed areas of bone formation with particles of biomaterial remaining in close contact with the newly formed bone. However, there were no significant differences between the groups regarding the newly formed bone area. Conclusion It was concluded that the use of Bio-Oss either alone or associated with the autogenous bone at a proportion of 25% showed superior dimensional stability compared to the use of autogenous bone in the proposed experimental model. Objectives In this paper, we present the clinical results of pediatric pneumonia and describe their etiology by using molecular diagnosis. Study design Tracheal secretion was collected from infants presenting respiratory distress isolated or associated with systemic signs, attending the unit of Neonatology between December 1, 2016, and Mai 31, 2018. Samples were tested with the multiplex RespiFinder® SMART 22 FAST which potentially detects 18 viruses and 4 bacteria. Results Of the 86 infants considered in this study (mean age 31 ± 19 days) suspected of acute respiratory tract infections, 71 (83%) were positive for one or multiple viruses or/and bacteria. The majority of acute respiratory tract infections had a viral origin (95%) respiratory syncytial viruses (A and B) (49%), rhinovirus (21%), coronaviruses 229E (11%), humain metapneumovirus (5%), influenza A (3%), influenza H1N1 (1%), adenovirus (2%), and parainfluenza virus type 4 (2%). Among our patients, 6% had Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Coinfections were not associated with severe respiratory symptoms. Conclusion The clinical spectrum of respiratory infections is complex and often nonspecific. Thus, the early and fast detection of related causative agents is crucial. The use of multiplex real time polymerase chain reaction may help choose an accurate treatment, reduce the overall use of unnecessary antibiotics, preserve intestinal flora, and decrease nosocomial infection by reducing the length of hospitalization.   • This study evaluates the potential area and the key environmental factors supporting Sargassum bed restoration (SBR) in the highly turbid northwestern Arabian Gulf where rapid coastal development impinges on the marine ecosystem functioning. Water depth was a primary environmental factor governing the distribution of the subtidal macroalgae beds in these turbid waters. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/cpi-0610.html The relationship between Sargassum coverage and water depth measured by an echo sounder indicated optimal water depths where the maximum coverage was observed. The availability of stable hard substrate was another key factor introducing heterogeneity in Sargassum coverage. The outcomes of this study offer beneficial information toward implementation of the SBR as a part of mitigation measures in future coastal development plans in the region. The levels of some persistent organic pollutants (POPs) along the Lebanese coastal zone (LCZ) were assessed by collecting15 surface sediments from five hotspot stations. Such stations were influenced by various industrial units, riverine input, and touristic activities. The levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (∑16PAHs), their methylated derivatives (∑18Me-PAHs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (∑28PCBs) were in the range of 537-3773 μg∙kg-1 dw, 187-1541 μg∙kg-1 dw, and 143-303 μg∙kg-1 dw respectively. Significant contamination was found at Beirut Port that is surrounded by a densely populated area and is subjected to multidisciplinary activities. Source identification of PAHs was confirmed by using the diagnostic ratio of PAHs with low molecular weight and high molecular weight (LMW/HMW). For PCBs, LCZ is polluted by higher chlorinated congeners with 4 to 9 chlorinated atoms generated from volatilization and combustion processes. Toxicity and biological risks were assessed using toxic equivalent quantity (TEQcarc) and sediment quality guideline quotient (SQGq). During the summer of 2017 we visited 33 sites with substantial coral cover across Hong Kong waters. At six sites where coral bleaching was observed, video-transect surveys were conducted, which revealed 18.7% to 56.1% bleached colonies and 5.9% to 57.6% bleached coral covered area per site. Mainly affected were three plate-like and three massive coral species. Water quality parameters were analyzed, which indicated that hyposalinity might have triggered the bleaching event. Tagging and follow-up field observation revealed a pattern of recovery depending on coral growth form, with high recovery rates (>93%) at five sites dominated by massive and submassive corals, but moderate (70%) at a site dominated by plate-like corals. Our study shows that the corals of Hong Kong exhibit differential susceptibility to bleaching and ability to recover, therefore it is imperative to establish a long-term monitoring programme to detect the changes in community structure over time. We report on concentrations of polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) measured in the adipose fins of returning adult Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and sea trout (Salmo trutta) to the river Tees in the Northeast of England. Overall, higher concentrations of these contaminants were found in sea trout samples, where detected congeners reflected the more widely used commercial formulations, in particular for the PBDEs. Our results suggest that these fish could be bioaccumulating persistent organic pollutants via diet during their migratory routes (North Sea and the Norwegian Sea) and, in addition, some level of re-mobilisation of these compounds could still be occurring in the UK eastern coastal areas. The use of adipose fin of returning salmonids could be further developed as a non-lethal approach to assess whether persistent contaminants are being accumulated during the juvenile to adult phase of salmonids originating from UK rivers. Based on the projection of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), present natural seawater conditions (pHNBS = 8.10 ± 0.03) and three laboratory-controlled OA conditions (OA1, ΔpHNBS = - 0.3 units; OA2, ΔpHNBS = - 0.4 units; OA3, ΔpHNBS = - 0.5 units) were employed. After 60-day incubation, our results showed that (1) OA significantly repressed the growth of adult S. intermedius; (2) food consumption tended to be decreased with pH decline; (3) intestinal morphology was changed, and activities of intestinal cellulase and lipase were decreased under acidified conditions; (4) expression levels of two immune-related genes (SiTNF14 and SiTGF-β) were altered; (5) rate-limiting enzyme activities of the glycolytic pathway and tricarboxylic acid cycle (TAC) were changed in all OA treatments compared to those of controls. Little attention has been drawn toward the effects of marine debris ingestion in relation to nutrient acquisition and fitness consequences. We tested whether anthropogenic debris ingestion influence the nutritional niches of endangered green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in estuarine and reef habitats on the Brazilian coast. Our results showed that estuarine turtles consumed diets with lower proportional wet mass composition of protein (P) and water (W) than their reef conspecifics. The amounts of debris, mostly plastics, retrieved from the digestive tracts of estuarine turtles were higher compared with those individuals from reefs. The realized nutritional niche from estuarine turtles was subject to the debris density in the environment, lack of benthic food resources available and the surface foraging behavior, likely preventing them from reaching their nutritional goals and resulting in lower fitness. The study provides critical information for the management and conservation of ecologically threatened individuals, populations, and their natural habitats.

The levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (∑16PAHs), their methylated derivatives (∑18Me-PAHs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (∑28PCBs) were in the range of 537-3773 μg∙kg-1 dw, 187-1541 μg∙kg-1 dw, and 143-303 μg∙kg-1 dw respectively. Significant contamination was found at Beirut Port that is surrounded by a densely populated area and is subjected to multidisciplinary activities. Source identification of PAHs was confirmed by using the diagnostic ratio of PAHs with low molecular weight and high molecular weight (LMW/HMW). For PCBs, LCZ is polluted by higher chlorinated congeners with 4 to 9 chlorinated atoms generated from volatilization and combustion processes. Toxicity and biological risks were assessed using toxic equivalent quantity (TEQcarc) and sediment quality guideline quotient (SQGq). During the summer of 2017 we visited 33 sites with substantial coral cover across Hong Kong waters. At six sites where coral bleaching was observed, video-transect surveys were conducted, which revealed 18.7% to 56.1% bleached colonies and 5.9% to 57.6% bleached coral covered area per site. Mainly affected were three plate-like and three massive coral species. Water quality parameters were analyzed, which indicated that hyposalinity might have triggered the bleaching event. Tagging and follow-up field observation revealed a pattern of recovery depending on coral growth form, with high recovery rates (>93%) at five sites dominated by massive and submassive corals, but moderate (70%) at a site dominated by plate-like corals. Our study shows that the corals of Hong Kong exhibit differential susceptibility to bleaching and ability to recover, therefore it is imperative to establish a long-term monitoring programme to detect the changes in community structure over time. We report on concentrations of polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) measured in the adipose fins of returning adult Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and sea trout (Salmo trutta) to the river Tees in the Northeast of England. Overall, higher concentrations of these contaminants were found in sea trout samples, where detected congeners reflected the more widely used commercial formulations, in particular for the PBDEs. Our results suggest that these fish could be bioaccumulating persistent organic pollutants via diet during their migratory routes (North Sea and the Norwegian Sea) and, in addition, some level of re-mobilisation of these compounds could still be occurring in the UK eastern coastal areas. The use of adipose fin of returning salmonids could be further developed as a non-lethal approach to assess whether persistent contaminants are being accumulated during the juvenile to adult phase of salmonids originating from UK rivers. Crown All rights reserved.Strongylocentrotus intermedius cultured in the northern Yellow Sea in China was utilized to evaluate the effects of chronic CO2-driven ocean acidification (OA) on adult sea urchins. Based on the projection of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), present natural seawater conditions (pHNBS = 8.10 ± 0.03) and three laboratory-controlled OA conditions (OA1, ΔpHNBS = - 0.3 units; OA2, ΔpHNBS = - 0.4 units; OA3, ΔpHNBS = - 0.5 units) were employed. After 60-day incubation, our results showed that (1) OA significantly repressed the growth of adult S. intermedius; (2) food consumption tended to be decreased with pH decline; (3) intestinal morphology was changed, and activities of intestinal cellulase and lipase were decreased under acidified conditions; (4) expression levels of two immune-related genes (SiTNF14 and SiTGF-β) were altered; (5) rate-limiting enzyme activities of the glycolytic pathway and tricarboxylic acid cycle (TAC) were changed in all OA treatments compared to those of controls. Little attention has been drawn toward the effects of marine debris ingestion in relation to nutrient acquisition and fitness consequences. We tested whether anthropogenic debris ingestion influence the nutritional niches of endangered green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in estuarine and reef habitats on the Brazilian coast. Our results showed that estuarine turtles consumed diets with lower proportional wet mass composition of protein (P) and water (W) than their reef conspecifics. The amounts of debris, mostly plastics, retrieved from the digestive tracts of estuarine turtles were higher compared with those individuals from reefs. The realized nutritional niche from estuarine turtles was subject to the debris density in the environment, lack of benthic food resources available and the surface foraging behavior, likely preventing them from reaching their nutritional goals and resulting in lower fitness. The study provides critical information for the management and conservation of ecologically threatened individuals, populations, and their natural habitats.
