However, the key viral factors initiating the host machinery after the virus enters the cytoplasm remain unclear. Here, we found that compounds packaged in the virions of white spot syndrome virus, such as palmitic amide, could trigger the viral life cycle in the host cytoplasm. Palmitic amide promoted virus infection by enhancing host glycolysis by binding to triosephosphate isomerase to enhance its enzymatic activity. The glycolysis enhancement resulted in lactate accumulation, thereby promoting hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) expression. HIF-1 upregulation further enhanced glycolysis, which in turn promoted virus infection. Therefore, our study presented novel insight into the initiation of the virus life cycle in host cells.Adsorption-driven osmotic heat engines offer an alternative way for harvesting low-grade waste heat below 80°C. In this study, we performed a high-throughput computational screening based on grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations to identify the high-performance metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) from 1322 computationally ready experimental MOF structures for adsorption-driven osmotic heat engines with LiCl-methanol as the working fluid. Structure-property relationship analysis reveals that MOFs exhibiting high energy efficiency possess large working capacity, pore size and surface area, and moderate adsorption enthalpy comparable to the evaporation enthalpy. Furthermore, machine learning is employed to accelerate the computational screening for satisfied MOFs via the structure properties. The optimal structure properties of the MOFs are further identified via the ensemble-based regression model by optimizing the energy efficiency via the genetic algorithm, which shed light on rationally designing and fabricating MOFs for desired heat-to-electricity conversion.Liquid metal has demonstrated an enormous potential for developing soft functional devices and machines. The approach is distinguished by (1) the encapsulation of electrolyte and multiple liquid metal droplets within an enclosed system, and (2) the creation of stable and continuous torque outside a liquid environment. In addition, a liquid metal electrical brush is introduced to operate the motor with low friction and low wear. The unique driving mechanism endows the motor with several advantages, including low friction, no sparking, low noise, versatile working environment, and being built from soft materials that could offer new opportunities for developing soft robotics.Defensive behaviors are evolved responses to threat stimuli, and a potential threat elicits risk assessment (RA) behavior. A thorough understanding on phase equilibrium of the hydrates and its variation through different materials is provided. The path toward ambient temperature and pressure hydrogen batteries with high storage capacity is elucidated. We suggest that the charging rate of H 2 in this storage medium and long cyclic performance are more immediate challenges than storage capacity for technological translation of this storage medium. This review and provided outlook establish a groundwork for further innovation on hydrogen hydrate systems for promising future of hydrogen fuel.The calcium-binding proteins parvalbumin and calbindin are expressed in neuronal populations regulating brain networks involved in spatial navigation, memory processes, and social interactions. Information about the numbers of these neurons across brain regions is required to understand their functional roles but is scarcely available. Employing semi-automated image analysis, we performed brain-wide analysis of immunohistochemically stained parvalbumin and calbindin sections and show that these neurons distribute in complementary patterns across the mouse brain. Parvalbumin neurons dominate in areas related to sensorimotor processing and navigation, whereas calbindin neurons prevail in regions reflecting behavioral states. We also find that parvalbumin neurons distribute according to similar principles in the hippocampal region of the rat and mouse brain. We validated our results against manual counts and evaluated variability of results among researchers. Comparison of our results to previous reports showed that neuron numbers vary, whereas patterns of relative densities and numbers are consistent.

To investigate the diagnostic value of different captopril challenge test (CCT) diagnostic criteria for diagnosing primary aldosteronism (PA).
We collected the clinical data of 184 patients with hypertension retrospectively in West China Hospital of Sichuan University. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to analyze the post-CCT efficacy of aldosterone renin activity ratio (ARR), plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC), plasma renin activity (PRA) and PAC suppression rate for PA diagnosis.
This study included 125 cases of primary aldehyde (PA group) and 59 cases of essential hypertension (EH group), and there were 38 normal renin primary hypertension (NREH group) and 21 low renin primary hypertension (LREH group) in EH group. The post-CCT PAC suppression rate (median (P
, P
)) of EH and PA group were 0.190 (0.083, 0.351) and 0.125 (0.024, 0.237), respectively. Compared with the NREH group, the basic and post-CCT PRA of LREH group were lower (
<0.001), and there were no signiftable as a confirmatory testing criterion of PA.

Calculated the fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index of the combined medication regimen and comparAB is resistant to polymyxin, which is related to mutations in LPS lipid A biosynthesis genes lpx A, lpx C, lpx D. Clinical treatment should adopt a combination of polymyxin+imipenem/meropenem and other drug combination to reduce the secondary infection of drug resistant bacteria.
To evaluate the clinical application of array-based comparative genomic hybridization (a-CGH) in the prenatal diagnosis of fetal chromosomal aberrations in gravidas with advanced maternal age (AMA).
A total of 3 677 amniotic fluid samples from pregnant women who underwent amniocentesis for prenatal diagnosis solely due to AMA were selected. Array-CGH was performed on the Agilent CGX
(8X60K) platform and the data were analyzed by the Genoglyphix software.
The overall detection rate of chromosomal aberration was 2.04% (75/3677), with 53.33% (40/75) being aneuploidies, including 22 cases of trisomy-21, 5 cases of trisomy-18, 8 cases with XXY, 3 cases of XYY and 2 cases of mosaic monosomy X, 32.00% (24/75) being pathogenic copy number variations (pCNVs), including 19 cases of microdeletion and 5 cases of microduplication, with the fragment size ranging from 323 kb to 26 780 kb, and 14.67% (11/75) being likely pathogenic CNVs (lpCNVs), including 7 cases of microdeletion and 7 cases of microduplication, wil age. However, no correlation was found between the detection rate of p/lpCNVs and maternal age.

The goals of this study were to (1) determine the feasibility and acceptability of using actigraphy to objectively measure sleep quality and habitual physical activity in rural Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and (2) examine the relationship between sleep parameters, self-report symptoms, daytime physical activity, and physical function, including the ability to work.
Thirty individuals were asked to wear a wrist-worn accelerometer for 5 nights and 4 days. Nighttime sleep parameters derived were average and intra-individual variability (IIV) in total sleep time (TST), sleep onset latency (SOL), sleep efficiency (SE), and wake after sleep onset (WASO). Daytime habitual physical data derived were average and peak activity and daytime napping.
Ninety-three percent (
= 28) of participants completed the study. All participants who wore the device marked sleep and wake cycles and periods of non-wear using the marker. Trauma-related symptoms were not associated with mean or IIV in TST, SE, SOL, or WASO (

There is limited evidence on the relationship between disability, experiences of gender-based violence (GBV), and mental health among refugee women in humanitarian contexts.
A cross-sectional analysis was conducted of baseline data (
= 209) collected from women enrolled in a cohort study of refugee women accessing GBV response services in the Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya. Women were surveyed about GBV experiences (past 12 months, before the last 12 months, before arriving in the refugee camps), functional disability status, and mental health (anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress), and we explored the inter-relationship of these factors.
Among women accessing GBV response services, 44% reported a disability. A higher proportion of women with a disability (69%) reported a past-year experience of physical intimate partner violence and/or physical or sexual non-partner violence, compared to women without a disability (54%). A higher proportion of women with a disability (32%) experienced non-partner physical or sexual violence before arriving in the camp compared to women without a disability (16%). Disability was associated with higher scores for depression (1.93, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.54-3.33), PTSD (2.26, 95% CI 0.03-4.49), and anxiety (1.54, 95% CI 0.13-2.95) after adjusting for age, length of encampment, partner status, number of children, and GBV indicators.

As perinatally infected children increasingly survive into adulthood, the quality of life and mental health of this population has increased in importance. This review provides a synthesis of the prevalence of mental health problems in this population and explores associated factors. A systematic database search (Medline, PsycINFO, Scopus) with an additional hand search was conducted. Peer-reviewed studies on adolescents (aged 10-19), published between 2008 and 2019, assessing mental health symptoms or psychiatric disorders, either by standardized questionnaires or by diagnostic interviews, were included. The search identified 1461 articles, of which 301 were eligible for full-text analysis. Fourteen of these, concerning HIV-positive adolescents, met the inclusion criteria and were critically appraised. Mental health problems were highly prevalent among this group, with around 25% scoring positive for any psychiatric disorder and 30-50% showing emotional or behavioral difficulties or significant psychological distress.
Both follow-up groups were found to have lower psychological, emotional and social well-being, psychological flourishing, and reduced mental health, in comparison with the baseline groups. The statistically significant decreases in the mental health and well-being of participants in this study indicate the need for substantive interventions to support student mental health and well-being. The goals of this study were to (1) determine the feasibility and acceptability of using actigraphy to objectively measure sleep quality and habitual physical activity in rural Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and (2) examine the relationship between sleep parameters, self-report symptoms, daytime physical activity, and physical function, including the ability to work. Thirty individuals were asked to wear a wrist-worn accelerometer for 5 nights and 4 days. Nighttime sleep parameters derived were average and intra-individual variability (IIV) in total sleep time (TST), sleep onset latency (SOL), sleep efficiency (SE), and wake after sleep onset (WASO). Daytime habitual physical data derived were average and peak activity and daytime napping. Ninety-three percent ( = 28) of participants completed the study. All participants who wore the device marked sleep and wake cycles and periods of non-wear using the marker. Trauma-related symptoms were not associated with mean or IIV in TST, SE, SOL, or WASO ( in the DRC. Classical ketogenic diets (KD), which reduce reliance on carbohydrates and provide ketones as fuel, have neuroprotective potential, but their high fat content reduces compliance, and experimental evidence suggests they protect juvenile brain against TBI, but not adult brain, which would strongly limit their applicability in TBI. Methods We designed a new-KD with a fat to carbohydrate plus protein ratio of 21, containing medium chain triglycerides (MCT), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), low glycaemic index carbohydrates, fibres and the ketogenic amino acid leucine, and evaluated its neuroprotective potential in adult TBI. Adult male C57BL6 **** were injured by controlled cortical impact (CCI) and assessed for 70 days, during which they received a control diet or the new-KD. Results The new-KD, that markedly increased plasma Beta-hydroxybutyrate (β-HB), significantly attenuated sensorimotor deficits and corrected spatial memory deficit. The lesion size, perilesional inflammation and oxidation were markedly reduced. Oligodendrocyte loss appeared to be significantly reduced. TBI activated the mTOR pathway and the new-KD enhanced this increase and increased histone acetylation and methylation. Results With activity stimulation and various molecular approaches, we further demonstrate activity-dependent mRNP granule dynamics involving disassembly of mRNP granules, release of mRNAs, activation of local protein translation, and the impairment of granule disassembly in cellular, animal and human models of TDP-43 proteinopathy. Although there are distinct advantages of online CME in regards to wider reach and flexibility, there are certain drawbacks beyond just technological limitations. Interactivity using ingenious ideas may be required to motivate and engage learners during online CME.Telepsychiatry is a cost-effective alternative to in-person psychiatric consultations. The COVID-19 pandemic brought about a sharp spike in the utilization of telepsychiatry due to ongoing restrictions on gatherings and traveling. In recognition of the importance of telemedicine in general, and telepsychiatry specifically, telemedicine practice guidelines and telepsychiatry operational guidelines have been released. Due to the rising trend in telemedicine, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDIA) incorporated teleconsultation health insurance coverage at a level on par with regular in-person consultations. In contrast, in the United States of America, private insurance coverage for telepsychiatry has been in vogue for some time. In this paper we draw comparisons between India and the United States on telepsychiatry and health insurance. We compare the evolving regulatory policies of these two countries in relation to existing insurances plans that are available, the challenges in implementation of new regulations and the possible ways to overcome the challenges to make telepsychiatry affordable to all.Digital psychiatry and e-mental health have proliferated and permeated vastly in the current landscape of mental health care provision. Following the above, the Indian Psychiatrists Society, Telemedicine Society of India (TSI) and National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (INI), Bangalore came together to address the specific needs of Psychiatrists practicing tele consultations, there by releasing Telepsychiatry Operational Guidelines 2020. This article discusses the guidelines outlines in the above documents with respect to prescribing psychotropics. We have discussed the thought process behind formulation of Telepsychiatry Operational guidelines, the challenges that may arise while following the above guidelines with possible solutions.Telepsychiatry and telepsychotherapy are new treatment modalities that have been used more than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although there are distinct advantages of online CME in regards to wider reach and flexibility, there are certain drawbacks beyond just technological limitations. Interactivity using ingenious ideas may be required to motivate and engage learners during online CME.Telepsychiatry is a cost-effective alternative to in-person psychiatric consultations. The COVID-19 pandemic brought about a sharp spike in the utilization of telepsychiatry due to ongoing restrictions on gatherings and traveling. In recognition of the importance of telemedicine in general, and telepsychiatry specifically, telemedicine practice guidelines and telepsychiatry operational guidelines have been released. Due to the rising trend in telemedicine, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDIA) incorporated teleconsultation health insurance coverage at a level on par with regular in-person consultations. In contrast, in the United States of America, private insurance coverage for telepsychiatry has been in vogue for some time. In this paper we draw comparisons between India and the United States on telepsychiatry and health insurance. We compare the evolving regulatory policies of these two countries in relation to existing insurances plans that are available, the challenges in implementation of new regulations and the possible ways to overcome the challenges to make telepsychiatry affordable to all.Digital psychiatry and e-mental health have proliferated and permeated vastly in the current landscape of mental health care provision. The COVID-19 crisis has accelerated this digital transformation, and changes that usually take many years to translate into clinical practice have been implemented in a matter of weeks. Systems and policies should be in place to ensure that data storage, access, and disposal are systematic and conform to data safety norms.As telemedicine gained both importance and momentum following COVID -19 pandemic, Telemedicine Practise Guidelines (TPG) March 2020 was notified by the Central Government of India. Following the above, the Indian Psychiatrists Society, Telemedicine Society of India (TSI) and National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (INI), Bangalore came together to address the specific needs of Psychiatrists practicing tele consultations, there by releasing Telepsychiatry Operational Guidelines 2020. This article discusses the guidelines outlines in the above documents with respect to prescribing psychotropics. We have discussed the thought process behind formulation of Telepsychiatry Operational guidelines, the challenges that may arise while following the above guidelines with possible solutions.Telepsychiatry and telepsychotherapy are new treatment modalities that have been used more than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic. Three different oxy-fuel glass furnaces based on oxygen transport membrane and vacuum swing adsorption systems are compared to a reference air-blown unit. The analysis shows that the most efficient membrane-based oxyfuel furnace cuts the energy demand by ~22% as compared to the benchmark air-blown case. Participants (n = 101) from three slaughterhouses were asked to rate their perceived exertion on the Borg scale during the cutting task when the knife was well and poorly sharpened. The OCRA results showed that the score for cutting with a dull knife was greater (43.57 ± 13.51) than with a sharp knife (23.79 ± 3.10) (p less then 0.001). Consequently, there was a significant increase in the risk level of acquiring upper-limb work-related musculoskeletal disorders (UL-WMSD) by using a "poorly sharpened" knife (29%; p less then 0.001; Borg scale 2-8). In Medfly, female sex determination is based on the activation of Cctransformer (Cctra). A maternal contribution of Cctra is required to activate Cctra itself in the XX embryos and to start and epigenetically maintain a Cctra positive feedback loop, by female-specific alternative splicing, leading to female development. In XY embryos, the male determining Maleness-on-the-Y gene (MoY) blocks this activation and Cctra produces male-specific transcripts encoding truncated CcTRA isoforms and male differentiation occurs.
With the aim of inducing frameshift mutations in the first coding exon to disrupt both female-specific and shorter male-specific CcTRA open reading frames (ORF), we injected Cas9 ribonucleoproteins (Cas9 and single guide RNA, sgRNA) in embryos. As this approach leads to mostly monoallelic mutations, masculinization was expected onlt of Cctra splicing from female to male mode is induced also by dCas9. Collectively, the present findings corroborate the idea that a transient embryonic inactivation of Cctra is sufficient for male sex determination.

Postoperative bleeding is a major problem in children undergoing complex pediatric cardiac surgery. The primary aim of this prospective observational study was to evaluate the effect of an institutional approach consisting of early preventive fibrinogen, prothrombin complex and platelets administration on coagulation parameters and postoperative bleeding in children. The secondary aim was to study the rate of re-intervention and postoperative transfusion, the occurrence of thrombosis, length of mechanical ventilation, ICU stay and mortality.
In fifty children (age 0-6 years) with one or more predefined risk factors for bleeding after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), thrombelastography (TEG) and standard coagulation parameters were measured at baseline (T1), after CPB and reversal of heparin (T2), at sternal closure (T3) and after 12 h in the ICU (T4). Clinical bleeding was evaluated by the surgeon at T2 and T3 using a numeric rating scale (NRS, 0-10).
After CPB and early administration of fibrinogen, prothof bleeding after CPB, an early preventive therapy with fibrinogen, prothrombin complex and platelets guided by clinical bleeding evaluation and TEG reduced bleeding and improved TEG and standard coagulation parameters significantly, with no occurrence of thrombosis or need for re-operation.

The Oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, is a highly polyphagous invasive species with a high reproductive potential. In many tropical and subtropical parts of the world it ranks as one of the major pests of fruits and vegetables. Due to its economic importance, genetic, cytogenetic, genomic and biotechnological approaches have been applied to understand its biology and to implement the Sterile Insect Technique, currently a part of area-wide control programmes against this fly. Its chromosome complement includes five pairs of autosomes and the sex chromosomes. The X and Y sex chromosomes are heteromorphic and the highly heterochromatic and degenerate Y harbours the male factor BdMoY. The characterization of the Y chromosome in this fly apart from elucidating its role as primary sex determination system, it is also of crucial importance to understand its role in male biology. The repetitive nature of the Y chromosome makes it challenging to sequence and characterise.

In fifty children (age 0-6 years) with one or more predefined risk factors for bleeding after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), thrombelastography (TEG) and standard coagulation parameters were measured at baseline (T1), after CPB and reversal of heparin (T2), at sternal closure (T3) and after 12 h in the ICU (T4). Clinical bleeding was evaluated by the surgeon at T2 and T3 using a numeric rating scale (NRS, 0-10). After CPB and early administration of fibrinogen, prothof bleeding after CPB, an early preventive therapy with fibrinogen, prothrombin complex and platelets guided by clinical bleeding evaluation and TEG reduced bleeding and improved TEG and standard coagulation parameters significantly, with no occurrence of thrombosis or need for re-operation. It has been shown that the budding phase alcohol extract of this plant contains the largest amounts of polyphenols, including rutin and rosemary acid, which promote the radical scavenging activity and antioxidant properties. In contrast, the extract from the massive flowering phase already at a concentration of 12.5 µg/mL reduces the survival of melanoma cells to 60% with 90% melanocytes survival. In addition, extracts from beginning of flowering and end of flowering at a concentration of 25 µg/mL, containing significantly less rutin and rosmarinic acid, in combination with irradiation of cells with UVB, significantly increased the lipid peroxidation process, particularly in melanoma cells. These data indicate the possibility of using extracts from S. hortensis L. to modulate/differentiate the metabolism of normal and tumor skin cells.In this manuscript, we describe a new approach to study the effect of the eating environment on food intake and eating behavior using virtual reality technology. The aim was also to quantify selected alkaloids in the investigated extracts by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The analyses of alkaloid content were performed using HPLC in reversed phase (RP) mode using Polar RP column and mobile phase containing acetonitrile, water and ionic liquid (IL). A more cohesive account of the development of audiovisual speech perception may follow from a more thorough understanding of the development of sensitivity to and use of various temporal and phonetic cues.

Scyphozoan envenomation is featured as severe cutaneous damages due to the toxic effects of venom components released by the stinging nematocysts of a scyphozoan. However, the oedematogenic property and mechanism of scyphozoan venoms remain uninvestigated. Here, we present the oedematogenic properties of the nematocyst venom from Nemopilema nomurai (NnNV), a giant stinging scyphozoan in China, for the first time, using in vivo and in vitro models with class-specific inhibitors. NnNV was able to induce remarkable oedematogenic effects, including induction of significant oedema in the footpad and thigh of mouse, and increase in vascular permeability in the dorsal skin and kidney. Moreover, batimastat, a specific metalloproteinase inhibitor, could significantly reduce the Evan's blue leakage in the damaged organs and attenuate paw oedema after 12 h, but exerted no influence on NnNV-induced thigh oedema. These observations suggested a considerable contribution of NnNV metalloproteinase-like components to the increased vasopermeability, and the participation was strongly suggested to be mediated by destroying the integrity of the vascular basement membrane. Moreover, partial isolation combined LC-MS/MS profiling led to identification of the protein species Nn65 with remarkable metalloproteinase activity. This study contributes to the understanding of the effector components underlying the cutaneous damages induced by scyphozoan stings.A recent research emphasis has been placed on the development of highly crystallized nanostructures as a useful technology for many photocatalytic applications. This short review summarizes the work on improving the efficiency of photocatalyst nanopillars through increased surface area and doping within the applications of water splitting, removal of organic pollutants from the environment, photoswitching, soot oxidation, and photothermalization.Mastitis is the most prevalent and economically important disease caused by different etiological agents, which leads to increased somatic cell count (SCC) and low milk quality. Treating mastitis cases with antimicrobials is essential to reduce SCC and improve milk quality. Non-prudent use of antimicrobials in dairy farms increased the development of antimicrobial resistant bacteria. This study's objectives were (1) to isolate and identify etiological agents of mastitis and (2) to determine antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacterial isolates. A total of 174 quarter milk samples from 151 cows with high SCC and clinical mastitis from 34 dairy farms in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi were collected. Bacterial causative agents were determined by bacteriological and biochemical tests. The antimicrobial resistance of bacterial isolates against 10 commonly used antimicrobials was tested. A total of 193 bacteria consisting of six bacterial species, which include Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus uberis, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella oxytoca and Klebsiella pneumoniae were isolated. Staphylococcus aureus was the predominant isolate followed by Strep. spp., E. coli, and Klebsiella spp. Results of this study showed that Gram-negatives (E. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/vx-561.html coli and Klebsiella spp.) were more resistant than Gram-positives (Staph. aureus and Streptococcus spp.). To elucidate the electrophysiological abnormalities caused by the mutations, the p.T1313M, p.R1448H, and wild-type (WT) SCN4A genes were transient expressed on Chinese hamster ovary (CHO-K1) cells. The detailed study on the gating defects of the mutant channels using the whole-cell patch clamping technique was performed. The mutant Nav1.4 channels impaired the basic gating properties with increasing sustained and window currents during membrane depolarization and facilitated the genesis of resurgent currents during repolarization. The mutations caused a hyperpolarization shift in the fast inactivation and slightly enhanced the slow inactivation with an increase in half-maximal inactivation voltage. No differences were found in the decay kinetics of the tail current between mutant and WT channels. In addition to generating the larger resurgent sodium current, the time to peak in the mutant channels was longer than that in the WT channels. Laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) using intracorporeal anastomosis has recently become more prevalent due to the advancements of laparoscopic surgical instruments. However, intracorporeally hand-sewn anastomosis (IHSA) is still uncommon because of technical difficulties. In this study, we evaluated various types of IHSA following LG with respect to the technical aspects and postoperative outcomes.Seventy-six patients who underwent LG using IHSA for treatment of gastric cancer between September 2014 and June 2018 were enrolled in this study. We described the details of IHSA in step-by-step manner, evaluated the clinicopathological data and surgical outcomes, and summarized the clinical experiences.Four types of IHSA have been described one for total gastrectomy (Roux-en-Y) and 3 for distal gastrectomy (Roux-en-Y, Billroth I, and Billroth II). The mean operation time and anastomotic time was 288.7 minutes and 54.3 minutes, respectively. Postoperative complications were observed in 13 patients. All of the patients recovered well with conservative surgical management. There was no case of conversion to open surgery, anastomotic leakage, or mortality.LG using IHSA was safe and feasible and had several advantages compared to mechanical anastomosis. For each trial, data on VTE, major bleeding, or bleeding were extracted by 2 reviewers independently. Pooled risk ratios (RRs) were calculated by using Review Manager 5.3 software and the significance was determined by the Z test. RESULTS A total of 6 studies with 7185 patients were included in our meta-analysis. DOACs (RR = 0.55, 95% confidence interval [95%CI] 0.34-0.90, I = 31%) had a similar prevention effect of VTE to LMWH (RR = 0.59, 95% CI 0.37-0.95, I = 59%). DOACs (RR = 1.52, 95% CI 0.99-2.33, I = 0%) yielded a similar bleeding occurrence rate compared with LMWH (RR = 1.35, 95% CI 1.07-1.70, I = 35%). DOACs (RR = 1.95, 95% CI 0.88-4.30, I = 0%) showed a sight higher major bleeding occurrence rate than LMWH (RR = 1.38, 95% CI 0.88-2.14, I = 0%). CONCLUSION DOACs show comparable efficacy to LMWH in cancer patients without VTE with a slightly higher major bleeding occurrence rate. DOACs are inclined to be an alternative thromboprophylaxis strategy in cancer patients as they have superiorities compared to traditional anticoagulation agents. A university can be an effective setting for early smoking cessation. We evaluated long-term predictors of smoking cessation among smokers in a university setting.We longitudinally followed a cohort of smokers enrolled in a university smoking cessation program in Seoul, South Korea. Sociodemographic factors, smoking-related variables, and changes in smoking habits were assessed during 6-week visit sessions and follow-up telephone interviews conducted 1 year or more later.A total of 205 participants were followed up (mean follow-up duration 27.1 months). Cessation rates were 47.3% at the end of the visit sessions and 28.8% at follow-up. The long-term persistent smoking rate was significantly higher among individuals with peers who smoked (odds ratio [OR] = 8.64; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.75, 42.80), with family members who smoked (OR = 3.28; 95% CI = 1.20, 9.00), and who smoked 10 to 19 cigarettes/day (OR = 4.83; 95% CI = 1.49, 15.69). Conversely, persistent smoking was less likely among those who attended the program regularly (OR = 0.84 per visit; 95% CI = 0.72, 0.99) and attempted quitting more frequently (OR = 0.93 per attempt; 95% CI = 0.87, 0.99). Use of smoking cessation medications (varenicline or bupropion) was not significantly associated with long-term quitting (OR = 0.71; 95% CI = 0.26, 1.93).Peer influences were the strongest predictors of failure in long-term cessation among smokers who attempted to quit. Similarly, the existence of smokers in the family was negatively associated with successful quitting. Regular attendance at a smoking cessation program and a high number of attempts to quit were positively associated with successful quitting. Targeting peer and family smoking groups together rather than targeting individual smokers alone, implementing active cessation programs encouraging regular attendance, and providing comprehensive antismoking environments might be effective strategies in a university setting.
Laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) using intracorporeal anastomosis has recently become more prevalent due to the advancements of laparoscopic surgical instruments. However, intracorporeally hand-sewn anastomosis (IHSA) is still uncommon because of technical difficulties. In this study, we evaluated various types of IHSA following LG with respect to the technical aspects and postoperative outcomes.Seventy-six patients who underwent LG using IHSA for treatment of gastric cancer between September 2014 and June 2018 were enrolled in this study. We described the details of IHSA in step-by-step manner, evaluated the clinicopathological data and surgical outcomes, and summarized the clinical experiences.Four types of IHSA have been described one for total gastrectomy (Roux-en-Y) and 3 for distal gastrectomy (Roux-en-Y, Billroth I, and Billroth II). The mean operation time and anastomotic time was 288.7 minutes and 54.3 minutes, respectively. Postoperative complications were observed in 13 patients. All of the patients recovered well with conservative surgical management. There was no case of conversion to open surgery, anastomotic leakage, or mortality.LG using IHSA was safe and feasible and had several advantages compared to mechanical anastomosis. The technique lengthened operating time, but this could be mitigated by increased surgical training and experience.BACKGROUND Patients with cancer are of a high level risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) is recommended as the normal treatment for cancer-associated venous thrombosis. For most magnetic materials, ultralow damping is of key importance for spintronic and spin-orbitronic applications, but the number of materials suitable for charge-based spintronic and spin-orbitronic applications is limited because of magnon-electron scattering. However, some theoretical approaches including the breathing Fermi surface model, generalized torque correlation model, scattering theory, and linear response damping model have been presented for the quantitative calculation of transition metallic ferromagnet damping. For the Fe-Co alloy, an ultralow intrinsic damping approaching 10-4 was first theoretically predicted using a linear response damping model by Mankovsky et al. and then experimentally observed by Schoen et al. Here, we experimentally report a damping parameter approaching 1.5 × 10-3 for traditional fundamental iron aluminide (FeAl) soft ferromagnets that is comparable to those of 3d transition metallic ferromagnets and explain this phenomenon based on the principle of minimum electron density of states.Understanding the dynamics of native forest loss and gain is critical for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services, especially in regions experiencing intense forest transformations. We quantified native forest cover dynamics on an annual basis from 1990 to 2017 in Brazil's Atlantic Forest. Despite the relative stability of native forest cover during this period (~28 Mha), the ongoing loss of older native forests, mostly on flatter terrains, have been hidden by the increasing gain of younger native forest cover, mostly on marginal lands for mechanized agriculture. Changes in native forest cover and its spatial distribution increased forest isolation in 36.4% of the landscapes. The clearance of older forests associated with the recut of 27% of younger forests has resulted in a progressive rejuvenation of the native forest cover. We highlight the need to include native forest spatiotemporal dynamics into restoration programs to better estimate their expected benefits and unexpected problems.Imaging reporter genes provides longitudinal information on the biodistribution, growth, and survival of engineered cells in vivo. A translational bottleneck to using reporter genes is the necessity to engineer cells with randomly integrating vectors. Here, we built homology-independent targeted integration (HITI) CRISPR-Cas9 minicircle donors for precise safe harbor-targeted knock-in of fluorescence, bioluminescence, and MRI (Oatp1a1) reporter genes. Our results showed greater knock-in efficiency using HITI vectors compared to homology-directed repair vectors. HITI clones demonstrated functional fluorescence and bioluminescence reporter activity as well as significant Oatp1a1-mediated uptake of the clinically approved MRI agent gadolinium ethoxybenzyl diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid. Contrast-enhanced MRI improved the conspicuity of both subcutaneous and metastatic Oatp1a1-expressing tumors before they became palpable or even readily visible on precontrast images. Our work demonstrates the first CRISPR-Cas9 HITI system for knock-in of large DNA donor constructs at a safe harbor locus, enabling multimodal longitudinal in vivo imaging of cells.Sleep is a highly conserved state, suggesting that sleep's benefits outweigh the increased vulnerability it brings. Yet, little is known about how sleep fulfills its functions. Here, we used video tracking in tethered flies to identify a discrete deep sleep stage in Drosophila, termed proboscis extension sleep, that is defined by repeated stereotyped proboscis extensions and retractions. Proboscis extension sleep is accompanied by highly elevated arousal thresholds and decreased brain activity, indicative of a deep sleep state. Preventing proboscis extensions increases injury-related mortality and reduces waste clearance. Sleep deprivation reduces waste clearance and during subsequent rebound sleep, sleep, proboscis extensions, and waste clearance are increased. Together, these results provide evidence of a discrete deep sleep stage that is linked to a specific function and suggest that waste clearance is a core and ancient function of deep sleep.5-Methylcytosine (5mC) oxidases, the ten-eleven translocation (TET) proteins, initiate DNA demethylation, but it is unclear how 5mC oxidation is regulated. We show that the protein SMCHD1 (structural maintenance of chromosomes flexible hinge domain containing 1) is found in complexes with TET proteins and negatively regulates TET activities. Removal of SMCHD1 from mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells induces DNA hypomethylation, preferentially at SMCHD1 target sites and accumulation of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC), along with promoter demethylation and activation of the Dux double-homeobox gene. In the absence of SMCHD1, ES cells acquire a two-cell (2c) embryo-like state characterized by activation of an early embryonic transcriptome that is substantially imposed by Dux Using Smchd1/Tet1/Tet2/Tet3 quadruple-knockout cells, we show that DNA demethylation, activation of Dux, and other genes upon SMCHD1 loss depend on TET proteins. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a diamond crystallization mechanism that operates under lithospheric mantle pressure-temperature conditions (6.3 and 7.5 gigapascals; 1300° to 1600°C) through the action of an electric potential applied across carbonate or carbonate-silicate melts. In this process, the carbonate-rich melt acts as both the carbon source and the crystallization medium for diamond, which forms in assemblage with mantle minerals near the cathode. Our results clearly demonstrate that electric fields should be considered a key additional factor influencing diamond crystallization, mantle mineral-forming processes, carbon isotope fractionation, and the global carbon cycle.
