Landmark and sustainable eco-friendly dye treatment processes are highly desirous to ameliorate their effect on the environment. The present study investigated the azo dye degradation efficiency of adapted Enterobacter hormaechei SKB 16 from textile effluent polluted soil in optimized culture conditions. The adapted bacteria strain was identified by standard microbiological and molecular techniques. E. hormaechei was tested individually for the decolourizing of Reactive Yellow 145 (RY 145) and Reactive Red F3B (RR 180) dyes under optimized conditions of pH, temperature and dye concentration on decolourization were studied. The adapted bacteria strain exhibited maximum decolourization (98 %) of Reactive yellow 145 and Reactive red 180 in 100 ppm concentration at pH 7, temperature 37 °C after 98 h of incubation. The enzyme analyses revealed that azo reductase and laccase played major roles in the cleavage of the azo bond and desulfonation respectively of both dyes during degradation. The metabolites were further characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS). Thereafter, degradation was deduced based on changes of the functional group, variation in retention times and mass/charge ratio and molecular weight. This study elucidated the promising potentials of adapted SKB 16 strain in the eco-friendly removal of textile azo dyes. Here, we examined the usefulness of a novel and short (3 min) eye tracking device to evaluate the cognitive function of normal control (NC, n = 52), mild cognitive impairment (MCI, n = 52), and Alzheimer's disease (AD, n = 70) subjects. Eye tracking total score declined significantly in MCI (**p less then 0.01 vs NC) and AD (**p less then 0.01 vs NC, ##p less then 0.01 vs MCI), and correlated well with the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) score (r = 0.57, *p less then 0.05). Furthermore, the eye tracking test, especially memory and deductive reasoning tasks, effectively discriminated NC, MCI and AD. The present novel eye tracking test clearly discriminated cognitive functions among NC, MCI, and AD subjects, thereby providing an advantage for the early detection of MCI and AD in screening.
Post-stroke seizures (PSS) are associated with significant morbidity and mortality across the globe. There is a paucity of data on PSS in Africa.
To assess the frequency and factors associated with PSS by stroke types across 15 hospitals in Nigeria and Ghana.
We analyzed data on all stroke cases recruited into the Stroke Investigative Research and Educational Network (SIREN). We included adults aged ≥18years with radiologically confirmed ischemic stroke (IS) or intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). PSS were defined as acute symptomatic seizures occurring at stroke onset and/or during acute hospitalization up until discharge. We used logistic regression to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aOR) with 95% Confidence Interval.
Among 3344 stroke patients, 499 (14.9%) had PSS (95% CI 13.7-16.2%). The mean duration of admission in days for those with PSS vs no PSS was 17.4±28.6 vs 15.9±24.7, p=0.72. There were 294(14.1%) PSS among 2091 ischemic strokes and 159(17.7%) among 897 with ICH, p=0.01. The factors associated with PSS occurrence were age<50years, aOR of 1.

The performance of 50 Brazilian bilingual children in the Rapid Automatized Naming Task, whose L1 was Brazilian Portuguese and who were exposed to English daily at school, was assessed. Forty-seven monolingual (Brazilian Portuguese) children were grouped according to age.
Language switching interfered with the performance of the bilingual children in the Rapid Automatized Naming Task in terms of speed and accuracy. No correlations were found between the performance in the RAN task and Reading Speed.

Cigarette filters are believed by many to reduce the health risks of smoking. This article outlines the history of the technology of filters and discusses the impacts of these cigarette design features and their regulation. We conducted a literature review to assess the impacts of this technology. The results show that filters were initially developed for aesthetic purposes and later improved and marketed as a harm reduction technology. The most widely-used filters are those made of cellulose acetate with or without activated carbon. Despite smokers' beliefs and advertising claims, filters have no health benefits and filter tip ventilation can increase the health risks of smoking. Filters can also make cigarettes more appealing and cause significant environmental impacts. Cigarette filters have no health benefits and lull smokers into a false sense of security and should therefore be banned.The study described the cross-cultural adaptation process of the American Cooking Skills and Healthy Eating questionnaire to Brazil. Six stages were followed Translation; Synthesis of translations; ****-translations; Expert Committee; Synthesis of final version; and the Pretest (self-administered online questionnaire in a Brazilian University). Participants responded to the translated questionnaire twice for test-retest. The "time" variable was treated as an independent variable along with other possible predictors (gender, age bracket, nutritional status, socioeconomic level, head of household education, physical activity and screen time). BACKGROUND MenACYW-TT is an investigational quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine intended for use in individuals ≥6 weeks of age. We evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of MenACYW-TT when compared to a licensed quadrivalent conjugate meningococcal vaccine (Menveo®; MCV4-CRM; GlaxoSmithKline, Italy), and when co-administered with tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap) and human papilloma virus (HPV4) vaccines in healthy meningococcal vaccine-naïve adolescents (10-17 years old) in the United States of America. METHODS In this pivotal Phase II, open-label, multicenter study, 1715 participants were randomized to receive MenACYW-TT, MCV4-CRM, MenACYW-TT co-administered with Tdap and HPV4, or Tdap and HPV4 vaccines alone (NCT02199691). The primary objective was to evaluate whether antibody responses to MenACYW-TT antigens were non-inferior to antibody responses after MCV4-CRM administration. Meningococcal antibody titers were determined using human complement serum bactericidal assay (hSBA) witable when MenACYW-TT was administered with or without Tdap and HPV4 vaccines in meningococcal vaccine-naïve adolescents. CASE DESCRIPTION The authors present a series of 5 cases wherein using calcium hydroxide as a disinfection strategy in endodontics caused serious neurologic injury to the treated patients. The mechanism in all cases was the inappropriate use of needle applications resulting in significant overfill into the inferior alveolar nerve space. Although calcium hydroxide has been recognized and used as a meaningful disinfectant in endodontic therapy for many years, the dangers and risks associated with a needle delivery technique are discussed and analyzed with recommendations based on current research to minimize risk. The conceptual distance to a theoretical major reflection site, termed effective reflection distance (ERD), has been associated with aging and augmentation index (AIx) clinically. However, it remains unclear whether and how ERD varies and associates with AIx when the hemodynamic condition is acutely perturbed in a patient. The objective of this study was to address this issue in rigorously controlled animal experiments. In 13 anesthetized dogs, we measured arterial pressure, aortic flow and femoral arterial flow, while altering the hemodynamic condition over wide ranges by administering zatebradine (bradycardic agent), nitroprusside (vasodilator), noradrenaline (vasoconstrictor), dobutamine (inotrope), and dextran (volume-expander). Using the measured data, we determined ERD based on an arterial model comprising a tube with a complex frequency-dependent load (ERDTL), which has been considered a physiologically valid model. We also determined ERD based on wave separation (ERDWSA) and pressure-based analyses (ERDAW). ERDTL was shortened significantly in response to nitroprusside or dobutamine infusion, and was significantly and negatively associated with AIx in multiple regression analysis using pooled data. ERDWSA or ERDAW did not necessarily correlate with ERDTL in terms of responses to drug administration or association with AIx. In conclusion, under diverse hemodynamic conditions, ERDTL changes sensitively and shows physiologically reasonable association with AIx. This result substantiates the importance of paying close attention to medications during clinical analysis of wave reflection. Caution is required when using ERDWSA or ERDAW as an alternative to ERDTL. Fourteen of the patients with pathological lymphangiographic patterns were chosen for surgery and 12 of them were operated with one to four LVAs each. BACKGROUND MenACYW-TT is an investigational quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine intended for use in individuals ≥6 weeks of age. We evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of MenACYW-TT when compared to a licensed quadrivalent conjugate meningococcal vaccine (Menveo®; MCV4-CRM; GlaxoSmithKline, Italy), and when co-administered with tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap) and human papilloma virus (HPV4) vaccines in healthy meningococcal vaccine-naïve adolescents (10-17 years old) in the United States of America. METHODS In this pivotal Phase II, open-label, multicenter study, 1715 participants were randomized to receive MenACYW-TT, MCV4-CRM, MenACYW-TT co-administered with Tdap and HPV4, or Tdap and HPV4 vaccines alone (NCT02199691). The primary objective was to evaluate whether antibody responses to MenACYW-TT antigens were non-inferior to antibody responses after MCV4-CRM administration. Although calcium hydroxide has been recognized and used as a meaningful disinfectant in endodontic therapy for many years, the dangers and risks associated with a needle delivery technique are discussed and analyzed with recommendations based on current research to minimize risk. To date, no study has investigated whether autogenous and reactive obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) types are different entities in terms of oxidative stress and inflammatory processes. The aim of this study is to compare them in terms of these features.
The study was conducted in subjects with reactive OCD (n=19), autogenous OCD (n=14), and a control group (n=17). All participants were non-smokers. Sociodemographic data were collected and the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-****), **** Anxiety Inventory (BAI), **** Depression Inventory (BDI), Obsessive Beliefs Questionnaire (OBQ), and Overvalued Ideas Scale (OVIS) were administered. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-10 (IL-10), paraoxonase (PON1), total oxidant status (TOS), and total antioxidant status (TAS) were measured.
There were no significant differences in TAS, TOS, or oxidative stress index (OSI) between the OCD and control groups. PON1 and hs-CRP levels were higher in the OCD group, whereas IL-6 and IL-10 levels were lower. Comparison across the three groups revealed no differences in TAS, TOS, OSI, or PON1 levels; however, hs-CRP was significantly higher while IL-6 and IL-10 were significantly lower in the reactive group compared to controls.

Latent growth curve modeling was used to assess the dynamic and developing effects of religiosity on after-treatment abstinence. Secular-based treatment emphasized the role of biological, psychological, and environmental determinants of substance abuse and provided detoxification interventions, such as counseling and group therapies, skill training, health care, and social support, however also relying on religious and spiritual growth to help recovery. Faith-based treatment fundamentally emphasized the Christian theory of addiction to consider substance abuse a sin caused by one's spiritual void and separation from God, although it also acknowledged the importance of biological, psychological, and social needs of rehabilitants.
Recovering addicts in faith-based treatment had significantly higher levels of religiosity at each wave (intercept factor) and better religious development across the three waves (slope factor). This contributed to after-treatment abstinence and mediated the effect of treatment mode on after-treatment abstinence.

We conducted a prospective case-control study nested within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort. Participants were 513 pancreatic cancer cases and 1020 matched controls. Concentrations of 22 POPs were measured in plasma collected at baseline.
Some associations were observed at higher concentrations of p, p'-DDT, trans-nonachlor, β-hexachlorocyclohexane and the sum of six organochlorine pesticides and of 16 POPs. The odds ratio (OR) for the upper quartile of trans-nonachlor was 1.55 (95% confidence interval 1.06-2.26; P for trend = 0.025). Associations were stronger in the groups predefined as most valid (participants having fasted >6 h, with microscopic diagnostic confirmation, normal weight, and never smokers), and as most relevant (follow-up ≥10 years). Among participants having fasted >6 h, the ORs were relevant for 10 of 11 exposures. Higher ORs were also observed among cases with microscopic confirmation than in cases with a clinical diagnosis, and among normal-weight participants than in the rest of participants. Among participants with a follow-up ≥10 years, estimates were higher than in participants with a shorter follow-up (for trans-nonachlor OR = 2.14, 1.01 to 4.53, P for trend = 0.035). Overall, trans-nonachlor, three PCBs and the two sums of POPs were the exposures most clearly associated with pancreatic cancer risk.

In particular, there is evidence supporting a critical role of astroglial activation and astrocytosis in AD. However, to this date, no studies have assessed whether astrocytosis is independently related to either Aβ or tau pathology, respectively, in vivo. To address this question, we determined the levels of the astrocytic marker glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 217 Aβ-negative cognitively unimpaired individuals, 71 Aβ-positive cognitively unimpaired individuals, 78 Aβ-positive cognitively impaired individuals, 63 Aβ-negative cognitively impaired individuals and 75 patients with a non-AD neurodegenerative disorder from the Swedish BioFINDER-2 study. Subcompared to other groups (p less then 0.05) and correlated with Aβ-PET only in Aβ-positive cognitively impaired individuals (p = 0.005). Finally, plasma GFAP was associated with both longitudinal Aβ-PET and cognitive decline, and mediated the effect of Aβ-PET on tau-PET burden, suggesting that astrocytosis secondary to Aβ aggregation might promote tau accumulation. Altogether, these findings indicate that plasma GFAP is an early marker associated with brain Aβ pathology but not tau aggregation, even in cognitively normal individuals with a normal Aβ status. Here, the available evidence on the association of PTSD with CVD from population, basic, and genomic research as well as from clinical and translational research are reviewed, seeking to identify major research gaps, barriers, and opportunities in knowledge acquisition and technology as well as research too magnitude, and direction of causal associations between PTSD and CVD outcomes. Some associations were observed at higher concentrations of p, p'-DDT, trans-nonachlor, β-hexachlorocyclohexane and the sum of six organochlorine pesticides and of 16 POPs. The odds ratio (OR) for the upper quartile of trans-nonachlor was 1.55 (95% confidence interval 1.06-2.26; P for trend = 0.025). Associations were stronger in the groups predefined as most valid (participants having fasted >6 h, with microscopic diagnostic confirmation, normal weight, and never smokers), and as most relevant (follow-up ≥10 years). Among participants having fasted >6 h, the ORs were relevant for 10 of 11 exposures. Higher ORs were also observed among cases with microscopic confirmation than in cases with a clinical diagnosis, and among normal-weight participants than in the rest of participants. Among participants with a follow-up ≥10 years, estimates were higher than in participants with a shorter follow-up (for trans-nonachlor OR = 2.14, 1.01 to 4.53, P for trend = 0.035). Overall, trans-nonachlor, three PCBs and the two sums of POPs were the exposures most clearly associated with pancreatic cancer risk. However, to this date, no studies have assessed whether astrocytosis is independently related to either Aβ or tau pathology, respectively, in vivo. To address this question, we determined the levels of the astrocytic marker glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 217 Aβ-negative cognitively unimpaired individuals, 71 Aβ-positive cognitively unimpaired individuals, 78 Aβ-positive cognitively impaired individuals, 63 Aβ-negative cognitively impaired individuals and 75 patients with a non-AD neurodegenerative disorder from the Swedish BioFINDER-2 study. Subcompared to other groups (p less then 0.05) and correlated with Aβ-PET only in Aβ-positive cognitively impaired individuals (p = 0.005). Finally, plasma GFAP was associated with both longitudinal Aβ-PET and cognitive decline, and mediated the effect of Aβ-PET on tau-PET burden, suggesting that astrocytosis secondary to Aβ aggregation might promote tau accumulation. Altogether, these findings indicate that plasma GFAP is an early marker associated with brain Aβ pathology but not tau aggregation, even in cognitively normal individuals with a normal Aβ status. There is a growing body of evidence for associations of PTSD with major risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD), such as hypertension and diabetes, as well as with major CVD outcomes, such as myocardial infarction and heart failure. However, it is unclear whether these associations are causal or confounded. Furthermore, the biological and behavioral mechanisms underlying these associations are poorly understood. Here, the available evidence on the association of PTSD with CVD from population, basic, and genomic research as well as from clinical and translational research are reviewed, seeking to identify major research gaps, barriers, and opportunities in knowledge acquisition and technology as well as research too magnitude, and direction of causal associations between PTSD and CVD outcomes. Four brands of nickel-titanium (NiTi) endodontic files were selected WaveOne Primary (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland), WaveOne Gold Primary (Dentsply Sirona), ProTaper Universal F2 (Dentsply Sirona), and ProTaper Next X2 (Dentsply Sirona). A tempered steel block containing artificial canals with 4 different canal curvatures (15°, 25°, 35°, and 45°) was constructed. Each file was used according to the manufacturer's instructions in the dynamic model, with an added 15 axial up-and-down movements of 4mm at the end of the canal. The generated torque was recorded, and the total and maximum torque values were measured. Two-way analysis of variance and the Duncan post hoc comparison test were performed at a significance level of 95%.
A significant correlation between the curvature angle and the type of file system was observed (P<.05). As the degree of canal curvature increased, the generated total and maximum torque increased. At 15° and 25°, the NiTi files with reciprocating motion generated a higher total and maximum torque than files with continuous rotation. ProTaper Universal of conventional NiTi alloy showed the steepest increase in the generated total and maximum torque with the increasing curvature angle. The ProTaper Next file had the lowest torque values at the higher canal angles of 35° and 45° (P<.05).

The aim of this study was to investigate the fracture resistance of endodontically treated and restored permanent mandibular molars with minimally invasive access cavities subjected to thermocycling and dynamic loading.
Forty first and second mandibular molars were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n=10/group) as follows group 1, control (intact teeth); group 2, traditional access cavity (TradAC); group 3, conservative access cavity (ConsAC); and group 4, truss access cavity (TrecAC). After endodontic treatment, teeth were restored with SDR core (Dentsply Caulk, Milford, DE) and subjected to thermocycling followed by dynamic and static loading with a multiaxial fatigue testing machine (Instron, Canton, MA). The maximum load to fracture and pattern of failure (restorable/unrestorable) were recorded. Data were evaluated with analysis of variance and the Tukey post hoc test for multiple comparisons.
Fracture resistance of the samples in the control group were higher than those in the experimental groups (P<.005). TradAC exhibited the least resistance to fracture (P<.005). There was no statistically significant difference in the fracture resistance of ConsAC and TrecAC (P=.361) Unrestorable fractures were more frequent in the TradAC group compared with all other groups.

Technological advances in developing experimentally controlled models of traumatic brain injury (TBI) are prevalent in rodent models and these models have proven invaluable in characterizing temporal changes in brain and behavior after trauma. To date no long-term studies in non-human primates (NHPs) have been published using an experimentally controlled impact device to follow behavioral performance over time.
We have employed a controlled cortical impact (CCI) device to create a focal contusion to the hand area in primary motor cortex (M1) of three New World monkeys to characterize changes in reach and grasp function assessed for 3 months after the injury.
The CCI destroyed most of M1 hand representation reducing grey matter by 9.6mm

and underlying corona radiata by 7.4mm

This study is unique in establishing a CCI model of TBI in an NHP resulting in persistent impairments in motor function evident in volitional use of the hand.
Establishing an NHP model of TBI is essential to extend current rodent models to the complex neural architecture of the primate brain. Moving forward this model can be used to investigate novel therapeutic interventions to improve or restore impaired motor function after trauma.

In this review paper, we provide an up-to-date summary of progress on the anticancer mechanisms and therapeutic strategies for azurin and p28.Typical ischemic damage to neurons were detected in the focus of experimental photothrombosis and in the transition zone. They were associated with symptoms of impaired motor functions and dysfunction of pelvic organs. The applied method of focal photothrombosis can be used for simulation of spinal cord ischemia for the development of methods for pharmacological correction and restoration of impaired sensorimotor functions.We examined the functional and structural changes of auditory neurons (ANs) in adult **** after conductive hearing loss (CHL). Earplugs (EPs) were bilaterally inserted in male 8-week-old **** for 4 weeks [EP(+) group] and subsequently removed for 4 weeks [EP(+/-) group]. We examined the control **** [EP(-) group] with no EPs inserted at 12 weeks. The auditory brainstem response (ABR) was measured to determine the cochlear function before and after EP insertion, after EP removal, and at 4 weeks following EP removal. We examined the cochleae for hair cell (HC) and spiral ganglion neuron survival, synaptic and neural properties, and AN myelination. There was a significant elevation of the ABR threshold across all tested frequencies after EP insertion. After removing the occlusion, these threshold shifts were fully recovered. Compared with the EP(-) ****, the EP(+) **** showed a significant decrease in the ABR peak 1 amplitude and a significantly prolonged latency at all tested frequencies. There was no significant effect of auditory deprivation on the survival of HCs and ANs. Conversely, auditory deprivation caused significant damage to the synapses and myelin and a significant decrease in the AN size. Although functional changes in the ABR amplitude and latency did not fully recover in the EP(+/-) ****, almost all anatomical changes were fully recovered in the EP(+/-) ****; however, cochlear synapses only showed partial recovery. These results suggest that auditory activities are required to maintain peripheral auditory synapses and myelination in adults. Instead of simply dismissing it as yet another example of Stalinist deviationism, Yugoslav mičurinci carefully weighed its political and ideological implications, trying to negotiate the Stalinist origins of Michurinist biology with political and ideological reconfigurations in post-Stalinist Yugoslavia. The essay examines the strategies employed by supporters and opponents of Lysenko's doctrine, as well as those sympathetic to it but yet unconvinced of its scientific validity and political appropriateness. It emphasizes globally unique attempts to de-Stalinize Michurinist biology and use it in the political-ideological struggle against the Stalinist Soviet Union, pointing to local agency and the bottom-up nature of attempts both in support of and against the doctrine.Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant that affects biota in remote settings due to atmospheric deposition of inorganic Hg, and its conversion to methylmercury (MeHg), the bioaccumulating and toxic form. Aquatic insects possess many qualities desired for MeHg biomonitoring, but are not widely used, largely because of limited information regarding percentages of total mercury (THg) composed of MeHg (i.e., MeHg%) in various taxa. Here, we examine taxonomic, spatial, and seasonal variation in MeHg% of stream-dwelling predator and primary-consumer insects from nine streams in the Adirondack region (NY, USA). Predator MeHg% was high (median 94%) and did not differ significantly among five taxa. MeHg% in selected dragonflies (the most abundant predators, Odonata Aeshnidae and Libellulidae) exhibited little seasonal and spatial variation, and THg concentration was strongly correlated with aqueous (filtered) MeHg (FMeHg; rs = 0.76). In contrast, MeHg% in primary consumers-shredders (northern caddisflies [Trichoptera Limnephilidae]) and scrapers (flathead mayflies [Ephemeroptera Heptageniidae]), were lower (medians 52% and 35%, respectively), and differed significantly between taxa, among sites, and seasonally. Correlations of THg with FMeHg were weak (shredders, rs = 0.45, p = 0.09) or not significant (scrapers, p = 0.89). The higher MeHg% of predators corresponded with their higher trophic positions (indicated by nitrogen stable isotopes). In contrast, MeHg% in primary consumers-shredders (northern caddisflies [Trichoptera Limnephilidae]) and scrapers (flathead mayflies [Ephemeroptera Heptageniidae]), were lower (medians 52% and 35%, respectively), and differed significantly between taxa, among sites, and seasonally. Correlations of THg with FMeHg were weak (shredders, rs = 0.45, p = 0.09) or not significant (scrapers, p = 0.89). INTRODUCTION In children with pneumonia, chest x-ray (CXR) is typically the first imaging modality used for diagnostic work-up. Repeated CXR or computed tomography (CT) are often necessary if complications such as abscesses or empyema arise, thus increasing radiation exposure. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the potential of radiation-free chest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to detect complications at baseline and follow-up, compared to CXR with and without additional lung ultrasound (LUS). METHODS Paired MRI and CXR scans were retrospectively reviewed by two blinded readers for presence and severity of pulmonary abscess, consolidation, bronchial wall thickening, mucus plugging and pleural effusion/empyema using a chest MRI scoring system. The scores for MRI and CXR were compared at baseline and follow-up. Furthermore, the MRI scores at baseline with and without contrast media were evaluated. RESULTS 33 pediatric patients (6.3±4.6 years), who had 33 paired MRI and CXR scans at baseline and 12 at follow-up were included. MRI detected significantly more lung abscess formations with a prevalence of 72.7% compared to 27.3% by CXR at baseline (p = 0.001), whereas CXR+LUS was nearly as good as MRI. MRI also showed a higher sensitivity in detecting empyema (p = 0.003). At follow-up, MRI also showed a slightly better sensitivity regarding residual abscesses. The overall severity of disease was rated higher on MRI. Contrast material did not improve detection of abscesses or empyema by MRI. CONCLUSION CXR and LUS seem to be sufficient in most cases. In cases where LUS cannot be realized or the combination of CXR+LUS might be not sufficient, MRI, as a radiation free modality, should be preferred to CT. We have identified 3 distinct phases of SCI acute (first 2 days), inflammatory (starting day 3) and resolution (>3 months) in 16 weeks follow up. Actively phagocytizing, CD68+/CD163- macrophages infiltrate myelin-rich necrotic areas converting them into cavities of injury (COI) when deep in the spinal cord. Alternatively, superficial SCI areas are infiltrated by granulomatous tissue, or arachnoiditis where glial cells are obliterated. In the COI, CD68+/CD163- macrophage numbers reach a maximum in the first 4 weeks and then decline. Myelin phagocytosis is present at 16 weeks indicating ongoing inflammatory damage. The COI and arachnoiditis are defined by a wall of progressively hypertrophied astrocytes. MR imaging indicates persistent spinal cord edema that is linked to the severity of inflammation. Microhemorrhages in the spinal cord around the lesion are eliminated, presumably by reactive astrocytes within the first week post-injury. Acutely increased levels of TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, IFN-gamma and other pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and proteases decrease and anti-inflammatory cytokines increase in later phases. In this study we elucidated a number of fundamental mechanisms in pathogenesis of SCI and have demonstrated a close association between progressive astrogliosis and reduction in the severity of inflammation.

By elaborating the idea of "affective spaces of health", we investigate not only how the affective potential of running bodies enables a therapeutic and individualised form of selfhood in response to China's post-socialist transformation, but also how affective atmospheres might condition and discipline runners' affective capacities for health. The paper therefore questions the simplistic association of health with particular qualities of place, and calls for research to focus on the affective, dispersed and fluid spaces of health instead.Digital technologies have long impacted the field of health, causing fundamental changes for the geographies of the production, movement, and consumption of health. Despite this, there is limited health geography engagement with digital health, and an understanding of how digital health affects the spatialities of health remains underdeveloped. Here, using autoethnography, I reflect on personal encounters with digital health in the UK to initiate analytical attention into the geographies of digital health. I demonstrate that digital health technologies are interconnected and increasingly structure access to health, impacting the equality of health; and that digital health disrupts existing, and creates new, therapeutic landscapes and mobilities.
Lymph node metastasis is crucial for gastric cancer. We aim to explore the value of preoperative gastroscopic carbon nanoparticles labeling in patients undergoing laparoscopic radical gastric cancer surgery.
1199 cases undergoing laparoscopic radical gastric cancer surgery were retrospectively analyzed. 214 cases received preoperative gastroscopic carbon nanoparticles labeling. The number of total lymph nodes detected, positive lymph nodes, N staging, and operation time were analyzed.
The patients received carbon nanoparticles labeling had more total lymph nodes detected (27.9±6.5 vs 22.2±4.0; P < 0.001) and shorter operation time (185.9±27.8min vs 218.7±69.2min; P < 0.001) compared with the control group. In addition, preoperative endoscopic carbon nanoparticles labeling improved the diagnosis rate of synchronous multiple gastric cancer (2.8% vs 0.4%; P < 0.001).
Preoperative endoscopic carbon nanoparticles tracer labeling is of great value in patients undergoing laparoscopic radical gastric cancer surgery. We amplified the amelogenin gene and performed a high resolution melting analysis to determine their human origin and characterize their sex. We also analyzed a fragment (16209-16402) from the HVR-1 region to identify the mtDNA haplogroups present in the tsantsa collection. Our exploratory results show that all the tsantsas are human and that the collection is comprised of 13 males and 1 female. A total of seven mtDNA haplogroups were found among the tsantsa collection using the mtDNA EMPOP database. These results show a predominance of the Amerindian mtDNA haplogroups B, C and D. Additional principal component analysis, genetic distance tree and haplotype network analyses suggest a relationship between the tsantsa specimens and Native American groups.Resource recovery from piggery biogas slurry has become an inevitable demand for sustainable development of pig industry. Microalgae show great potential in recovering nitrogen and phosphorus from piggery slurry, but struggle to utilize organic pollutants, as most of them are inert components (e.g., humic acids, HAs). In this study, nano-TiO2 was used to enhance the utilization of HAs by microalgae from piggery biogas slurry. Results showed that the optimal conditions for microalgal growth and HAs removal by the microalgae-TiO2 coupling system were TiO2 dosage of 0.30 g/L, microalgal inoculation concentration of 0.40 g/L, light intensity of 360 µmol photon/(m2·s) and temperature of 30 °C, with the microalgal chlorophyll concentration of 6.51 mg/L and HAs removal efficiency of 50.14%. Analysis of HAs composition variations in the piggery biogas slurry indicated that the decrease of HAs was caused by their decomposition into small molecules under the photocatalytic reactions of TiO2.

Critical illness waxes and wanes in stages, creating a dynamic flux in energy needs that we have only begun to examine. Furthermore, response to nutrition support likely differs greatly at the level of the individual patient in regard to genetic status, disease stage, comorbidities, and more. We review the observational and randomized literature concerning timing in nutrition support, discuss mechanisms of harm in feeding critically ill patients, and highlight the role of precision nutrition for moving the literature beyond the realm of blunt population averages into one that accounts for the patient-specific complexities of critical illness and host genetics. With direct electrostatic gate tuning, these vdW resonators exhibit exceptional tunability, in general, Δf/f0 > 200%, for continuously tuning the same device and the same mode (e.g., from ∼23 to ∼107 MHz), up to Δf/f0 ≈ 370%, the largest fractional tuning range in such resonators to date. This remarkable electromechanical resonance tuning is investigated by two different analytical models and finite element simulations. Furthermore, we carefully perform clear control experiments and simulations to elucidate the difference in frequency tuning between the heterostructure and single-material resonators. At a given initial strain level, the tuning range depends on the two-dimensional (2D) Young's moduli of the constitutive crystals; devices built on materials with lower 2D moduli show wider tuning ranges. Six compounds were identified as EcR agonists and another two as antagonists using a transgenic ecdysteroid reporter gene assay. The present results demonstrate that commercial C. arachnoidea extracts are rich in new, unusual bioactive ecdysteroids. Because of the lack of an authentic plant material, the truly biosynthetic or artifactual nature of these compounds cannot be confirmed.A new method for converting terminal epoxides and primary alcohols into α-alkylated ketones under borrowing hydrogen conditions is reported. Whereas molecular dynamics (MD) represents a powerful tool in studying assembly mechanisms, its predictions depend on the accuracy of underlying force fields, which are known to overly promote protein assembly. We here examine villin headpiece domain, HP36, which remains soluble at concentrations amenable to MD studies. The experimental characterization of soluble HP36 at concentrations of 0.05 to 1 mM reveals concentration-independent 90% monomeric and 10% dimeric populations. Extensive all-atom MD simulations at two protein concentrations, 0.9 and 8.5 mM, probe the HP36 dimer population, stability, and kinetics of dimer formation within two MD force fields, Amber ff14SB and CHARMM36m. MD results demonstrate that whereas CHARMM36m captures experimental HP36 monomer populations at the lower concentration, both force fields overly promote HP36 association at the higher concentration. Moreover, contacts stabilizing HP36 dimers are force-field-dependent. CHARMM36m produces consistently higher HP36 monomer populations, lower association rates, and weaker dependence of these quantities on the protein concentration than Amber ff14SB. Nonetheless, the highest monomer populations and dissociation constants are observed when the TIP3P water model in Amber ff14SB is replaced by TIP4P/2005, showcasing the critical role of the water model in addressing the protein solubility problem in MD.We report a bimodal imaging method that can spatially resolve and concurrently correlate SERS and background-free Mie scattering signals. By examining two types of nanoparticle assemblies with different types of plasmonic junctions, namely raspberry-like metamolecules (raspberry-MMs) containing intraparticle nanogaps and groups of Au nanocubes forming interparticle gaps, we were able to rapidly screen SERS-active particles among the entire population of nanoparticles. Ratiometric analysis of SERS/Mie scattering revealed distinct behaviors for these intra- and interparticle nanogaps. In particular, raspberry-MMs showed a high fraction of SERS-active particles with the SERS intensity essentially insensitive to the nanoparticle aggregation state and a predictable environmental dependence. In comparison, nanocube clusters exhibited highly heterogeneous SERS/Mie scattering ratios and unpredictable intensity fluctuations but higher maximum SERS intensity. This dual-imaging approach constitutes an in situ visualization tool that enables simultaneous and stoichiometric analysis of dual signals consisting of elastic and inelastic scattering, which can significantly improve the reliability of SERS measurements.

Critical illness waxes and wanes in stages, creating a dynamic flux in energy needs that we have only begun to examine. Furthermore, response to nutrition support likely differs greatly at the level of the individual patient in regard to genetic status, disease stage, comorbidities, and more. We review the observational and randomized literature concerning timing in nutrition support, discuss mechanisms of harm in feeding critically ill patients, and highlight the role of precision nutrition for moving the literature beyond the realm of blunt population averages into one that accounts for the patient-specific complexities of critical illness and host genetics. With direct electrostatic gate tuning, these vdW resonators exhibit exceptional tunability, in general, Δf/f0 > 200%, for continuously tuning the same device and the same mode (e.g., from ∼23 to ∼107 MHz), up to Δf/f0 ≈ 370%, the largest fractional tuning range in such resonators to date. This remarkable electromechanical resonance tuning is investigated by two different analytical models and finite element simulations. Furthermore, we carefully perform clear control experiments and simulations to elucidate the difference in frequency tuning between the heterostructure and single-material resonators. At a given initial strain level, the tuning range depends on the two-dimensional (2D) Young's moduli of the constitutive crystals; devices built on materials with lower 2D moduli show wider tuning ranges. Our study shed more light on epigenetic mechanism of PCOS and provided valuable reference for its diagnosis and treatment.Basal-like breast cancer is characterized by an aggressive clinical outcome and presence of metastasis, for which effective therapies are unavailable. We have previously shown that chondroitin 4-O-sulfotransferase-1 (C4ST-1) controls the invasive properties of the basal-like breast cancer cell line BT-549 by inducing matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression through the N-cadherin/β-catenin pathway. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/shield-1.html Here we report that C4ST-1 controls the proliferation of BT-549 cells via the MMP-dependent cleavage of syndecan-1. This review examines the heterogeneity of stromal cells within the lymph node and non-lymphoid tissues during both homeostatic and inflammatory conditions, in particular autoimmunity and cancer, with the goal of better understanding the complex and apparently paradoxical relationship between these two classes of diseases. The review surveys potential novel mechanisms involving the interactions between stromal cells and immune cells which may contribute to the development, pathology and underlying connection between autoimmunity and cancer, including potential pathways from autoimmune inflammation to either "hot" or "cold" tumors. These interactions may provide some insights to explain the rising incidence of both autoimmunity and cancer in young women in industrialized countries and have the potential to be exploited in the development of new interventions for preventions and treatments of both autoimmune diseases and cancer.Despite decades of research, the complex processes of embryonic development are not fully understood. The study of mammalian development poses particular challenges such as low numbers of embryos, difficulties in culturing embryos in vitro, and the time to generate mutant lines. With new approaches we can now address questions that had to remain unanswered in the past. One big contribution to studying the molecular mechanisms of development are two- and three-dimensional in vitro model systems derived from pluripotent stem cells. These models, such as blastoids, gastruloids, and organoids, enable high-throughput screens and straightforward gene editing for functional testing without the need to generate mutant model organisms. Furthermore, their use reduces the number of animals needed for research and allows the study of human development. Here, we outline and discuss recent advances in such in vitro model systems to investigate pre-implantation and post-implantation development.Engineered cardiac tissues (ECTs) are 3D physiological models of the heart that are created and studied for their potential role in developing therapies of cardiovascular diseases and testing cardio toxicity of drugs. Recreating the microenvironment of the native myocardium in vitro mainly involves the use of cardiomyocytes. However, ECTs with only cardiomyocytes (CM-only) often perform poorly and are less similar to the native myocardium compared to ECTs constructed from co-culture of cardiomyocytes and nonmyocytes. One important goal of co-culture tissues is to mimic the native heart's cellular composition, which can result in better tissue function and maturity. In this review, we investigate the role of nonmyocytes in ECTs and discuss the mechanisms behind the contributions of nonmyocytes in enhancement of ECT features.The α1-adrenergic receptors (ARs) are G-protein coupled receptors that bind the endogenous catecholamines, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. They play a key role in the regulation of the sympathetic nervous system along with β and α2-AR family members. While all of the adrenergic receptors bind with similar affinity to the catecholamines, they can regulate different physiologies and pathophysiologies in the body because they couple to different G-proteins and signal transduction pathways, commonly in opposition to one another. While α1-AR subtypes (α1A, α1B, α1C) have long been known to be primary regulators of vascular smooth muscle contraction, blood pressure, and cardiac hypertrophy, their role in neurotransmission, improving cognition, protecting the heart during ischemia and failure, and regulating whole body and organ metabolism are not well known and are more recent developments. These advancements have been made possible through the development of transgenic and knockout mouse models and more selective ligands to advance their research. Here, we will review the recent literature to provide new insights into these physiological functions and possible use as a therapeutic target.This study demonstrates, and confirms, that chromosome territory positioning is altered in primary senescent human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). The chromosome territory positioning pattern is very similar to that found in HDFs made quiescent either by serum starvation or confluence; but not completely. A few chromosomes are found in different locations. One chromosome in particular stands out, chromosome 10, which is located in an intermediate location in young proliferating HDFs, but is found at the nuclear periphery in quiescent cells and in an opposing location of the nuclear interior in senescent HDFs. We have previously demonstrated that individual chromosome territories can be actively and rapidly relocated, with 15 min, after removal of serum from the culture media. These chromosome relocations require nuclear motor activity through the presence of nuclear myosin 1β (NM1β). We now also demonstrate rapid chromosome movement in HDFs after heat-shock at 42°C. Others have shown that heat shock genes are actively relocated using nuclear motor protein activity via actin or NM1β (Khanna et al.
