We propose using regression-based estimators that borrow based on assuming exchangeability of the regression coefficients and parameters between data sources. Borrowing is accomplished with multisource exchangeability models and Bayesian model averaging. We show via simulation that a Bayesian linear model and Bayesian additive regression trees both have desirable properties and borrow under appropriate circumstances. We apply the estimators to recently completed trials of very low nicotine content cigarettes investigating their impact on smoking behavior.Intergroup contact is key to social cohesion, yet psychological barriers block engagement with diversity even when contact opportunities are abundant. We lack an advanced understanding of contact seeking because intergroup contact is often an independent variable in research, and studies on contact seeking have favoured experimental probing of selected factors or measured only broad behavioural intentions. This research carried out the first ecological tests of a novel multilayer-multivariate framework to contact seeking/avoiding. These tests were centred on a Muslim-led community contact-based initiative with visible support from local authorities following a terrorist attack. Non-Muslim Australian women (N = 1,347) contributed field data on their situated contact motivations, choices, and attendance at an intercultural educational stall; many (N = 559) completed a profiling test battery. Among those who responded to the initiative invite, the rate of taking up the high-salience contact opportunity in this heated setting was high and reflected multiple approach/avoidance motivations. Contact seeking/avoiding was not just allophilia/prejudice; it presented as new typologies of politicized solidarity, courage, apathy, and moral outrage. While intergroup predictors were significant across all profiling analyses, intrapersonal and interpersonal predictors also regularly contributed to explain variance in non-Muslims' contact motivations and choices, confirming their multilayer-multivariate nature.Dealing with high-dimensional censored data is very challenging because of the complexities in data structure. This article focuses on developing a variable selection procedure for censored high-dimensional data with the AFT models using the Modified Correlation Adjusted coRrelation (MCAR) scores method. Performances of variable selection by the MCAR method have been compared with other existing regularized techniques in literature-such as the lasso, elastic net and with a machine learning technique called boosting and with the censored CAR by a number of simulation studies and a real microarray data set called diffuse large-B-cell lymphoma. Results indicate that when correlation exists among the covariates, the MCAR method outperforms all five techniques while for uncorrelated data, the MCAR performs quite similar to the CAR method but clearly outperforms the other three methods. The empirical study further reveals that the MCAR method exhibits the best predictive performance among the methods.
Estimation of genetic parameters of lumbosacral transitional vertebrae based on data derived from radiographic screening of 27,597 German shepherd dogs.
Results of radiographic screening for lumbosacral transitional vertebrae classified according to a published scheme were collected. Obtained data were used for estimating variance components in single and multiple trait linear animal models to obtain heritabilities and additive genetic correlations for different types of lumbosacral transitional vertebrae.
Estimations indicated a moderate heritability of lumbosacral transitional vertebrae of h
= 0.27. Trait definitions reflecting the different types of lumbosacral transitional vertebrae revealed positive additive genetic correlations of r

Just as hippocampal lesions are principally responsible for "temporal lobe" amnesia, lesions affecting the anterior thalamic nuclei seem principally responsible for a similar loss of memory, "diencephalic" amnesia. Compared with the former, the causes of diencephalic amnesia have remained elusive. A potential clue comes from how the two sites are interconnected, as within the hippocampal formation, only the subiculum has direct, reciprocal connections with the anterior thalamic nuclei. We found that both permanent and reversible anterior thalamic nuclei lesions in male rats cause a cessation of subicular spatial signaling, reduce spatial memory performance to chance, but leave hippocampal CA1 place cells largely unaffected. We suggest that a core element of diencephalic amnesia stems from the information loss in hippocampal output regions following anterior thalamic pathology.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT At present, we know little about interactions between temporal lobe and diencephalic memory systems. Here, we focused on the subiculum, as the sole hippocampal formation region directly interconnected with the anterior thalamic nuclei. We combined reversible and permanent lesions of the anterior thalamic nuclei, electrophysiological recordings of the subiculum, and behavioral analyses. Our results were striking and clear following permanent thalamic lesions, the diverse spatial signals normally found in the subiculum (including place cells, grid cells, and head-direction cells) all disappeared. Anterior thalamic lesions had no discernible impact on hippocampal CA1 place fields. Thus, spatial firing activity within the subiculum requires anterior thalamic function, as does successful spatial memory performance. Our findings provide a key missing part of the **** bigger puzzle concerning why anterior thalamic damage is so catastrophic for spatial memory in rodents and episodic memory in humans.
Ten randomized controlled trials over the last 2 decades support treating low-risk pediatric distal radius fractures with removable immobilization and without physician follow-up. We aimed to determine the proportion of these fractures being treated without physician follow-up and to determine whether different hospital and physician types are treating these injuries differently.
We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study using ICES data. We included children aged 2-14 years (2-12 yr for girls and 2-14 yr for boys) with distal radius fractures having had no reduction or operation within a 6-week period, and who received treatment in Ontario emergency departments from 2003 to 2015. Proportions of patients receiving orthopedic, primary care and no follow-up were determined. Multivariable log-binomial regression was used to quantify associations between hospital and physician type and management.
We analyzed 70 801 fractures. A total of 20.8% (
= 14 742) fractures were treated without phywithout follow-up, the majority of these fractures in Ontario were not managed according to the latest research evidence. Canadian guidelines are required to improve care of these fractures and to reduce the substantial overutilization of physician resources we observed.
It has been suggested that the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened socioeconomic disparities in access to primary care. Given these concerns, we investigated whether the pandemic affected visits to family physicians differently across sociodemographic groups.
We conducted a retrospective cohort study using electronic medical records from family physician practices within the University of Toronto Practice-Based Research Network. We evaluated primary care visits for a fixed cohort of patients who were active within the database as of Jan. 1, 2019, to estimate the number of patients who visited their family physician (visitor rate) and the number of distinct visits (visit volume) between Jan. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/bi-3406.html 1, 2019, to June 30, 2020. We compared trends in visitor rate and visit volume during the pandemic (Mar. 14 to June 30, 2020) with the same period in the previous year (Mar. 14 to June 30, 2019) across sociodemographic factors, including age, sex, neighbourhood income, material deprivation and ethnic concentration.

Home blood pressure monitoring is increasingly used for pregnant individuals; however, there are no guidelines on such monitoring in this population. We assessed current practices in the prescription and use of home blood pressure monitoring in pregnancy.
We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We conducted a structured search through the MEDLINE (from 1946), Embase (from 1974) and CENTRAL (from 2018) databases up to Oct. 19, 2020. We included trials comparing office and home blood pressure monitoring in pregnant people. Outcomes included patient education, home blood pressure device, monitoring schedule, adherence, diagnostic thresholds for home blood pressure, and comparison between home and office measurements of blood pressure.
We included in our review 21 articles on 19 individual studies (1 RCT, 18 observational) that assessed home and office blood pressure in pregnant individuals (
= 2843). We observed variation in practice patterns in terms of how home monitoring was prescribed. Eight (42%) of the studies used validated home blood pressure devices. Across all studies, measurements were taken 3 to 36 times per week. Third-trimester home blood pressure corresponding to office blood pressure of 140/90 mm Hg after application of a conversion factor ranged from 118 to 143 mm Hg (systolic) and from 76 to 92 mm Hg (diastolic), depending on the patient population and methodology. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure values measured at home were lower than office values by 4 (95% confidence interval [CI] -6 to -3) mm Hg and 3 (95% CI -4 to -2) mm Hg, respectively.
Many issues related to home blood pressure monitoring in pregnancy are currently unresolved, including technique, monitoring schedule and target values. Future studies should prioritize the use of validated home measuring devices and standardized measurement schedules and should establish treatment targets.

These findings suggest that HAL is a useful tool for shoulder rehabilitation in patients with postoperative C5 palsy.Stroke remains a major factor causing death and disabilities such as cognitive impairment. There is conflicting evidence on the role and dynamics of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), an acute phase pro-inflammatory protein, in post-stroke cognitive impairment. This study evaluated cognitive impairment and examined its relationship with serum hsCRP in the first three months following stroke. Cognition was assessed using Montreal Cognitive Assessment test, while serum hsCRP concentrations were assessed using enzyme link immunosorbent assay kit. Data were processed using SPSS Statistics version 20.0. Sixty subjects, comprising of 30 stroke patients and 30 healthy subjects, matched for age, sex and level of education were studied. Cognitive impairment was observed among the stroke patients, while the healthy subjects showed normal cognitive function; and the difference in the cognitive scores of the two groups was highly significant (P = 0.001). There was higher prevalence of cognitive impairment among the stroke survivors compared to the non-stroke subjects. Serum hsCRP was significantly higher among the stroke survivors compared to the healthy subjects (P = 0.001). The high hsCRP level correlates well with duration of stroke and working memory domain of cognition. The data revealed a high prevalence of cognitive impairment and concurrent high serum hsCRP levels among stroke survivors in the first three months following stroke, in contrast with normal subjects. The high hsCRP level correlates with duration of stroke and working memory domain of cognition. The data suggest a role for serum hsCRP and inflammation in the development of post-stroke cognitive impairment.Strict compliance with medication and life style modification are integral to secondary stroke prevention. This study was undertaken to find out medication adherence among stroke survivors and factors associated with it. Cross sectional survey among stroke survivors was conducted. Interview based self-reported medication adherence was defined as consumption at least >80% of their medications for last two weeks, based on last prescription. Structured interview using pretested interview schedule was done to collect other data. Sequential step wise logistic regression analysis was done to find out the facilitators and barriers to medication adherence. Two hundred and forty stroke survivors (mean age 58.64 ± 10.96 years; 25.4% females) with a mean post-stroke period of 6.65 ± 3.36 months were participated. Overall medication adherence was 43.8% (n = 105). Medication adherence was 34.3% (n = 134), 52.6% (n = 190) and 56.7% (n = 224) for antidiabetics, antihypertensives and statins respectively and was associated with risk factor control (Diabetes Odds Ratio (OR) = 4.85; 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 2.12-11.08, Hypertension OR = 3.42; 95% CI 1.83-6.4, Dyslipidaemia OR = 3.88; 95% CI 1.96-4.04). Having daily routine (OR = 2.82; 95% CI 1.52-5.25), perceived need of medication (OR = 2.33; 95% CI 1.04-5.2) and perceived poor state of health (OR = 2.65; 95% CI 1.30-5.40) were facilitators. Memory issues (OR = 0.34; 95% CI 0.16-0.71), side effects (OR = 0.24; 95% CI 0.11-0.42) and financial constraints (OR = 0.46; 95% CI 0.24-0.91) were barriers to medication adherence. All patients underwent preoperative pulmonary functional tests (PFT) and biplanar stereoradiography. Vital capacity (VC) and forced vital capacity (FVC) pulmonary functional data were collected. Rib-cage parameters (maximum thickness, maximum width, thoracic index (TI), rib hump (RH), rib-cage volume (RCV), spinal penetration index (SPI), endothoracic hump ratio (EHR), vertebra-sternum angle (VSA), rib vertebral angle difference (RVAD), and vertebral lateral decentering (VLD)) were quantified from 3D images. Patients were divided into two groups restrictive lung disorder (RLD) (%FVC less then 80%) and non-RLD (%FVC ≥ 80%). The maximum width and RCV were significantly correlated with VC (p less then 0.0001), and FVC (p less then 0.0001). RH, EHR, and VSA were negatively correlated with %FVC (p less then 0.01). TI, SPI, and RVAD were not correlated with any pulmonary parameters. The maximum widths of RLD patients were significantly shorter than those of the non-RLD patients (218.3 mm vs. 229.7 mm, p less then 0.01). A total of 4763 patients were evaluated retrospectively, 200 patients had cerebellar ischemia and 22 patients of these cerebellar ischemias (11%) had a headache at initial presentation. Ataxia, dysarthria, dysmetria were the most common neurological findings. There was no significant difference whether ischemic lesion single or multiple and whether above or below 1.5 cm diameter. Ischemic lesions generally were in cortical/ juxtacortical layer. According to vascular perfusion areas, 54.5% patients' ischemia was located in PICA (posterior inferior cerebellar artery) territory.

There is conflicting evidence on the role and dynamics of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), an acute phase pro-inflammatory protein, in post-stroke cognitive impairment. This study evaluated cognitive impairment and examined its relationship with serum hsCRP in the first three months following stroke. Cognition was assessed using Montreal Cognitive Assessment test, while serum hsCRP concentrations were assessed using enzyme link immunosorbent assay kit. Data were processed using SPSS Statistics version 20.0. Sixty subjects, comprising of 30 stroke patients and 30 healthy subjects, matched for age, sex and level of education were studied. Cognitive impairment was observed among the stroke patients, while the healthy subjects showed normal cognitive function; and the difference in the cognitive scores of the two groups was highly significant (P = 0.001). There was higher prevalence of cognitive impairment among the stroke survivors compared to the non-stroke subjects. Serum hsCRP was significantly higher among the stroke survivors compared to the healthy subjects (P = 0.001). The high hsCRP level correlates well with duration of stroke and working memory domain of cognition. The data revealed a high prevalence of cognitive impairment and concurrent high serum hsCRP levels among stroke survivors in the first three months following stroke, in contrast with normal subjects. The high hsCRP level correlates with duration of stroke and working memory domain of cognition. The data suggest a role for serum hsCRP and inflammation in the development of post-stroke cognitive impairment.Strict compliance with medication and life style modification are integral to secondary stroke prevention. This study was undertaken to find out medication adherence among stroke survivors and factors associated with it. Cross sectional survey among stroke survivors was conducted. Interview based self-reported medication adherence was defined as consumption at least >80% of their medications for last two weeks, based on last prescription. Structured interview using pretested interview schedule was done to collect other data. Sequential step wise logistic regression analysis was done to find out the facilitators and barriers to medication adherence. Two hundred and forty stroke survivors (mean age 58.64 ± 10.96 years; 25.4% females) with a mean post-stroke period of 6.65 ± 3.36 months were participated. Overall medication adherence was 43.8% (n = 105). Medication adherence was 34.3% (n = 134), 52.6% (n = 190) and 56.7% (n = 224) for antidiabetics, antihypertensives and statins respectively and was associated with risk factor control (Diabetes Odds Ratio (OR) = 4.85; 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 2.12-11.08, Hypertension OR = 3.42; 95% CI 1.83-6.4, Dyslipidaemia OR = 3.88; 95% CI 1.96-4.04). Having daily routine (OR = 2.82; 95% CI 1.52-5.25), perceived need of medication (OR = 2.33; 95% CI 1.04-5.2) and perceived poor state of health (OR = 2.65; 95% CI 1.30-5.40) were facilitators. Memory issues (OR = 0.34; 95% CI 0.16-0.71), side effects (OR = 0.24; 95% CI 0.11-0.42) and financial constraints (OR = 0.46; 95% CI 0.24-0.91) were barriers to medication adherence. Rib-cage parameters (maximum thickness, maximum width, thoracic index (TI), rib hump (RH), rib-cage volume (RCV), spinal penetration index (SPI), endothoracic hump ratio (EHR), vertebra-sternum angle (VSA), rib vertebral angle difference (RVAD), and vertebral lateral decentering (VLD)) were quantified from 3D images. Patients were divided into two groups restrictive lung disorder (RLD) (%FVC less then 80%) and non-RLD (%FVC ≥ 80%). The maximum width and RCV were significantly correlated with VC (p less then 0.0001), and FVC (p less then 0.0001). RH, EHR, and VSA were negatively correlated with %FVC (p less then 0.01). TI, SPI, and RVAD were not correlated with any pulmonary parameters. Intervention with fruit extracts may lower glucose and lipid levels, as well as blood pressure. We reviewed the efficacy of bilberry and grape seed extracts to affect these outcomes across populations with varying health status, age and ethnicity, across intervention doses and durations, in 24 intervention studies with bilberry and blackcurrant (n = 4) and grape seed extract (n = 20). Bilberry and blackcurrant extract lowered average levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), at least in Chinese subjects, especially in those who were older, who were diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and who were participating in longer-term studies. We also found good evidence that across studies and in subjects with hypercholesterolemia, T2DM or metabolic syndrome, intervention with bilberry and blackcurrant extract, and to some extent grape seed extract, significantly lowered total and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels after four weeks. Intervention with grape seed extract may reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure in subjects with hypertension or metabolic syndrome. Differential responsiveness in cholesterol and blood pressure outcomes between stratified populations could not be explained by age, dose or study duration. In this review, the innate and adaptive immune responses to TMEV are discussed to better understand the pathogenic mechanisms of viral infections. Professional (dendritic cells (DCs), macrophages, and B cells) and non-professional (microglia, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes) antigen-presenting cells (APCs) are the major cell populations permissive to viral infection and involved in cytokine production. The levels of viral loads and cytokine production in the APCs correspond to the degrees of susceptibility of the **** to the TMEV-induced demyelinating diseases. TMEV infection leads to the activation of cytokine production via TLRs and MDA-5 coupled with NF-κB activation, which is required for TMEV replication. These activation signals further amplify the cytokine production and viral loads, promote the differentiation of pathogenic Th17 responses, and prevent cellular apoptosis, enabling viral persistence. Among the many chemokines and cytokines induced after viral infection, IFN α/β plays an essential role in the downstream expression of costimulatory molecules in APCs. The excessive levels of cytokine production after viral infection facilitate the pathogenesis of TMEV-induced demyelinating disease. In particular, IL-6 and IL-1β play critical roles in the development of pathogenic Th17 responses to viral antigens and autoantigens. These cytokines, together with TLR2, may preferentially generate deficient FoxP3+CD25- regulatory cells converting to Th17. These cytokines also inhibit the apoptosis of TMEV-infected cells and cytolytic function of CD8+ T lymphocytes (CTLs) and prolong the survival of B cells reactive to viral and self-antigens, which preferentially stimulate Th17 responses.We recently discovered an anti-ferroptotic mechanism inherent to M1 macrophages whereby high levels of NO● suppressed ferroptosis via inhibition of hydroperoxy-eicosatetraenoyl-phosphatidylethanolamine (HpETE-PE) production by 15-lipoxygenase (15LOX) complexed with PE-binding protein 1 (PEBP1). However, the mechanism of NO● interference with 15LOX/PEBP1 activity remained unclear. Here, we use a biochemical model of recombinant 15LOX-2 complexed with PEBP1, LC-MS redox lipidomics, and structure-based modeling and simulations to uncover the mechanism through which NO● suppresses ETE-PE oxidation. Our study reveals that O2 and NO● use the same entry pores and channels connecting to 15LOX-2 catalytic site, resulting in a competition for the catalytic site. We identified residues that direct O2 and NO● to the catalytic site, as well as those stabilizing the esterified ETE-PE phospholipid tail. The functional significance of these residues is supported by in silico saturation mutagenesis. We detected nitrosylated PE species in a biochemical system consisting of 15LOX-2/PEBP1 and NO● donor and in RAW264.7 M2 macrophages treated with ferroptosis-inducer RSL3 in the presence of NO●, in further support of the ability of NO● to diffuse to, and react at, the 15LOX-2 catalytic site. The results provide first insights into the molecular mechanism of repression of the ferroptotic Hp-ETE-PE production by NO●.

Results suggest that emotion malleability beliefs predict avoidance and related psychological outcomes across the academic year.We investigated the effect of second language use on the experienced vividness and emotionality of negative autobiographical memories. Fifty native Swedish speakers with English as their second language were asked to recall a negative episodic memory from their past in their native language. Half the participants were then asked to reactivate the same memory in their first language while the other half were asked to reactivate it in their second language, and then rate their experienced vividness and emotionality a second time. Following this reactivation, experienced emotionality was reduced for both groups of participants, with a similar magnitude of reduction for both groups. Experienced vividness, however, was only reduced for the group who reactivated the memory in their second language. No difference in intrusion frequency was found between the groups at a one-week follow-up. The results provide increased insight into how a second language can affect the experienced emotionality and vividness of a negative autobiographical memory.WDR45 and WDR45B are β-propeller proteins belonging to the WIPI (WD repeat domain, phosphoinositide interacting) family. Mutations in WDR45 and WDR45B are genetically linked with beta-propeller protein-associated neurodegeneration (BPAN) and intellectual disability (ID), respectively. WDR45 and WDR45B are homologs of yeast Atg18. Atg18 forms a complex with Atg2 for autophagosome biogenesis, probably by transferring lipids from the ER to phagophores. We revealed that WDR45 and WDR45B are critical for autophagosome-lysosome fusion in neural cells. WDR45 and WDR45B, but not their disease-related mutants, bind to the tether protein EPG5 and facilitate its targeting to late endosomes/lysosomes. In Wdr45 Wdr45b-deficient cells, the formation of tether-SNARE fusion machinery is compromised. The macroautophagy/autophagy deficiency in wdr45 wdr45b DKO cells is ameliorated by suppression of O-GlcNAcylation, which promotes autophagosome maturation. Thus, our results provide insights into the pathogenesis of WDR45- and WDR45B-related neurological diseases.During spliceosome assembly, interactions that bring the 5' and 3' ends of an intron in proximity are critical for the production of mature mRNA. We find that SL3 and SL4 bind distinct spliceosomal proteins and combining a U1 snRNA activity assay with siRNA-mediated knockdown, we demonstrate that SL3 and SL4 act through the RNA helicase UAP56 and the U2 protein SF3A1, respectively. In vitro analysis using UV crosslinking and splicing assays indicated that SL3 likely promotes the SL4-SF3A1 interaction leading to enhancement of A complex formation and pre-mRNA splicing. Overall, these results highlight the vital role of the distinct contacts of SL3 and SL4 in bridging the pre-mRNA bound U1 and U2 snRNPs during the early steps of human spliceosome assembly.Breastfeeding is a health promoting social behavior but statistics suggest a persistent disparity of lower rates among African American mothers. The Theory of Normative Social Behavior (TNSB) explains when and how norms influence behaviors, but has produced inconsistent results with respect to proposed moderators group identity and injunctive norms (IN), limiting its predictive value in diverse cultural groups. Cultural norms are one of many influences on breastfeeding behaviors, yet little is known about their mechanisms of influence. The TNSB has not been tested in the breastfeeding context or within an exclusively African American cultural group. Given this knowledge gap, a survey of 528 African American mothers in the Washington, D.C. area was conducted to test the moderating effects of IN and subjective norms (SN) and social identity on the descriptive norms (DN) to intentions relationship as predicted by the TNSB. Structural equation modeling was used to show that when controlling for education and breastfeeding history, norms significantly predicted 26.4% of the variance in breastfeeding intentions. SN and DN interacted negatively to enhance breastfeeding intentions. Latent profile analysis using ethnic pride, collectivism, and religiosity scales detected four profiles of African American social identity. Social identity profile membership was a significant moderator on the DN to intentions pathway in the structural equation model. Profiles with the highest ethnic pride were significantly influenced by DN to intend to breastfeed. Implications from this study for public health intervention and communication messaging are discussed.The year 2020 will be synonymous with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) for many global citizens. Through elements of events study and document and critical discourse analysis, this paper investigates the COVID-19 vaccines' regulatory emergency use authorisation and/or conditional marketing authorisation (regulatory authorisation) regimes and the contestations thereof. The key finding is that there was a regulatory authorisation rush, with at least 62, mostly high-income countries, doing so in 40 days from 2 December 2020-10 January 2021. The Theory of Normative Social Behavior (TNSB) explains when and how norms influence behaviors, but has produced inconsistent results with respect to proposed moderators group identity and injunctive norms (IN), limiting its predictive value in diverse cultural groups. Cultural norms are one of many influences on breastfeeding behaviors, yet little is known about their mechanisms of influence. The TNSB has not been tested in the breastfeeding context or within an exclusively African American cultural group. Given this knowledge gap, a survey of 528 African American mothers in the Washington, D.C. area was conducted to test the moderating effects of IN and subjective norms (SN) and social identity on the descriptive norms (DN) to intentions relationship as predicted by the TNSB. Structural equation modeling was used to show that when controlling for education and breastfeeding history, norms significantly predicted 26.4% of the variance in breastfeeding intentions. SN and DN interacted negatively to enhance breastfeeding intentions. Latent profile analysis using ethnic pride, collectivism, and religiosity scales detected four profiles of African American social identity. Social identity profile membership was a significant moderator on the DN to intentions pathway in the structural equation model. Profiles with the highest ethnic pride were significantly influenced by DN to intend to breastfeed. Perceptions of the legitimacy of a society's legal system help explain individual responses to courts and legal actors. Normative considerations such as fair and respectful treatment as well as social identification have demonstrated the ability to enhance perceived legal legitimacy and future cooperation. Veterans treatment courts (VTCs) are a rapidly disseminating and understudied intervention. Their targeting of a socially esteemed group presents an interesting venue to explore normative theories of justice. The present study tested a modified version of Tyler's theory of procedural justice in this setting.
We hypothesized that procedural justice, social bonds, and receipt of gratitude for military service would be positively associated with veteran identity and legal legitimacy. We further hypothesized that participants' identification as veterans would mediate the relationships between the three independent variables and legitimacy.

Research on plea bargaining is increasing, yet **** of this work examines how the process unfolds in adult court. Plea bargaining in juvenile court has several notable differences such as parental involvement. Including parents throughout the adjudicatory process is encouraged but ultimately left up to the attorney. Research has not explored whether attorneys include parents in plea bargain discussions with their clients. The present study examined parental involvement in the juvenile plea bargain process.
We did not have any formal a priori hypotheses for this exploratory study.
The first author conducted qualitative interviews with eighteen defense attorneys from the juvenile division of a public defender's office on the East Coast where we discussed their most recent case that resulted in a plea bargain.
Parents were included in plea negotiations and hearings. Attorneys described seeking parental input because parents may be impacted by the terms of the plea and because the court often seeks parental approval.

Acute and chronic liver diseases are a major global public health problem; nevertheless, the etiology of 12-30% of cases remains obscure. The purpose of this research was to study the incidence of human herpesviruses (HHVs) cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and HHV-6 in patients with hepatitis and to examine the effect of HHV on the disease severity. We studied the clinical materials of 259 patients with hepatitis treated in Infectious Clinic n.1 (Moscow) and the archived materials of 118 patients with hepatitis C. HHV DNA was detected in the whole blood in 13.5% of patients with hepatitis B or C and in 10.1% of patients with hepatitis of unspecified etiology. EBV demonstrated the highest incidence (58.1%). Cirrhosis was diagnosed in 50% of patients with HHV and in 15.6% of patients without HHV. In patients with hepatitis C, the frequency of HHV was higher in liver biopsy (38.7%) compared to blood. Results The baseline ECG predictors of LVR, identified in univariate analysis, included the number of leads with ST-segment elevation (odds ratio (OR) 1.19, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03-1.38, p = 0.0212), number of leads with Q-waves (OR 1.21, 95% CI 1.07-1.37, p = 0.0033), sum of ST-segment elevation (OR 1.04, 95% CI 1.00-1.08; p = 0.0253) and maximal ST-segment elevation (OR 1.14; 95% CI 1.00-1.29; p = 0.0446). When added to demographic, clinical and angiographic data, the number of leads with ST-segment elevation (OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.01-1.36; p = 0.0413), number of leads with Q-waves (OR 1.15, 95% CI 1.01-1.32; p = 0.0354) and the sum of ST-segment elevation (OR 1.04, 95% CI 1.00-1.08; p = 0.0331) successfully predicted development of LVR in multivariate logistic regression models. Multivariate analysis of variance and chi-square difference tests found that self-identified Democrats reported significantly higher pro-environmental values and norms, but sustainability program engagement, sponsored initiatives awareness, and influence of initiatives on behavior were politically neutral. Path analysis found that ascription of responsibility was a significant predictor of sustainability-related engagement and behaviors for both Independents and Republicans. Numerical calculations were carried out in the Ansys® software and involved the application of bilinear and multilinear isotropic hardening. It has been revealed that the temperature increase in a statically indeterminate system causes a decrease in the load-carrying capacity of the profile. An increase in temperature by 27 °C causes a reduction of the load-carrying capacity by 10%, while compression at temperature 300 °C reduces the nominal load-carrying capacity of the profile by half. Most of the proposed numerical procedures allowed for accurate estimation of reaction forces during heating and maximum compressive forces recorded during compression at elevated temperatures. The correctness of the determined material characteristics and the suitability of shell models for estimation of the response of a thin-walled structure subjected to thermomechanical loading was confirmed.Multi-parameter water quality monitoring is crucial in resource-limited areas to provide persistent water safety. Here, we develop a multi-parameter water quality monitoring system (MWQMS) that includes an array of low-cost, easy-to-use, high-sensitivity electrochemical sensors, as well as custom-designed sensor readout circuitry and smartphone application with wireless connectivity. The system overcomes the need of costly laboratory-based testing methods and the requirement of skilled workers. The proposed MWQMS system can simultaneously monitor pH, free chlorine, and temperature with sensitivities of 57.5 mV/pH, 186 nA/ppm and 16.9 mV/°C, respectively, as well as sensing of BPA with less then 10 nM limit of detection. The system also provides seamless interconnection between transduction of the sensors' signal, signal processing, wireless data transfer and smartphone app-based operation.

The objective of this study was to examine the impacts of different appraisal processes for two RDTs.
A case study analysis was conducted using countries with different forms of appraisal processes for RDTs for which public health technology assessment (HTA) reports were available. Two contrasting RDTs were chosen according to the criteria rare versus ultra-rare treatment, affecting child versus adult, life-threatening versus disabling. Information from public HTA reports for each country's RDT appraisal was extracted into templates, allowing a systematic comparison of the appraisals across countries and identification of the impact of the different processes in practice.
Reports from Belgium, England, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Scotland, Sweden, and the USA were selected for nusinersen (for spinal muscular atrophy) and voretigene neparvovec (for inherited retinal disorders). Countries with separate or adapted processes had more consistent approaches for managing RDT-related issues during appraisal, such as stakeholder involvement and criteria to address the specificities of RDTs, creating more transparency in decision-making.
Findings suggest that separate or adapted approaches for RDT appraisal may facilitate more structured, consistent decision-making and better management of RDT specificities.

This qualitative study aimed to understand the impact of subcontracting from the perspective of care workers. We interviewed 11 care workers employed in subcontracted facilities to explore their perceptions of caring and working under these conditions. Our overarching finding was one of loss. Care workers lost wages, benefits, security, and voice. Their working conditions worsened, with workload and turnover increasing, resulting in a loss of experienced staff and a loss of time to provide care. These findings call into question the promises of quality and flexibility that legitimated policies permitting subcontracting, while adding to the mounting evidence that subcontracting LTC harms both workers and residents.

Several studies have assessed the Quality of Life (QoL) in Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children and adolescents. The findings from these studies, however, vary from DHH children reporting lower QoL than their typically hearing (TH) peers to similar QoL and even higher QoL. These differences have been attributed to contextual and individual factors such as degree of access to communication, the participants' age as well as measurement error. Using written instead of sign language measures has been shown to underestimate mental health symptoms in DHH children and adolescents. It is expected that translating generic QoL measures into sign language will help gain more accurate reports from DHH children and adolescents, thus eliminating one of the sources for the observed differences in research conclusions. Hence, the aim of the current study is to translate the Inventory of Life Quality in Children and Adolescents into Norwegian Sign Language (ILC-NSL) and to evaluate the psychometric properties of the self-report of the ILC-NSL and the written Norwegian version (ILC-NOR) for DHH children and adolescents.

Biological therapies have been developed to target T2-inflammation in asthma. IL-13 is a key component of T2-inflammation in asthma, driving mucus hypersecretion, IgE-induction, and smooth muscle contraction. Early phase clinical trials for treatments that target T2-inflammation require biomarkers to assess pharmacological effects. The aim of this study was to examine levels of IL-13 inducible biomarkers in the airway epithelium of patients with mild asthma compared to healthy controls. Ten patients with mild asthma with high blood eosinophil and high fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) were recruited, and six healthy subjects. Blood eosinophil and FeNO reproducibility was assessed prior to bronchoscopy. Epithelial brushings were collected and assessed for IL-13 inducible gene expression. Blood eosinophil and FeNO levels remained consistent in both patients with asthma and healthy subjects. Of the 11 genes assessed, expression levels of 15LOX1, POSTN, CLCA1, SERPINB2, CCL26, and NOS2 were significantly higher in patients with asthma compared to healthy controls. These six genes, present in patients with mild asthma with T2 inflammation, have the potential to be used in translational early phase asthma clinical trials of novel therapies as bronchial epithelial biomarkers.Aqueous Zn ion batteries (AZIBs), featuring low cost, long-term cycling stability, and superior safety are promising for applications in advanced energy storage devices. Herein, the use of monoclinic MnV2 O6 (MVO) is reported, which can be activated for high-capacity Zn ions storage by electrochemically oxidizing part of the Mn2+ to Mn3+ or Mn4+ while the remaining Mn2+ ions act as binders/pillars to hold the layer structure of MVO and maintain its integrity during charging/discharging process. Moreover, after introducing carbon nanotubes (CNT), the MVOCNT composite not only provides robust 3D Zn-ion diffusion channels but also shows enhanced structural integrity. As a result, a MVOCNT cathode delivers a high midpoint voltage (1.38 V after 3000 cycles at 2 A g-1 ) and a high energy density of 597.9 W h kg-1 . A model combining exciton, charge separation, transport, and most critical the voltage driven electron filling of the in-band trap states with drain-source voltage (VDS ) above a threshold, is proposed to understand this unusual PPC-NPC transform mechanism, which is different from that of any known nanomaterial system. Palliative Care Consult Service (PCCS) programme was established in Hungary to provide palliative care to hospitalised patients with complex needs and to coordinate integrated care across providers. The aim of this study was to measure the association of PCCS with healthcare costs from payer's perspective.
Study population consisted of patients with metastatic cancer, who were admitted to the Clinical Centre of the University of Pécs between 2014 and 2016. Patients who did not die within 180days from enrolment were excluded. Patients receiving services from PCCS team (intervention patients) were compared to patients receiving usual care (controls). The two populations were matched using propensity scores. Data were obtained from electronic medical records linked to claims data.
For patients who were involved in PCCS at least 60days before their death, the costs of care outside the acute hospital were higher. However, this was offset by savings in hospital costs so that the total healthcare cost was significantly reduced (p=0.
