  • The main purpose was to investigate the intra- and inter-rater reliability of the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society (ASAS) definition of positive MRI for active sacroiliitis (ASAS-positive MRI), in a sample of patients with inflammatory **** pain (IBP) and suspected axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), who underwent sacroiliac joints (SIJ) MRI.     The in-hospital mortality rate among patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody-associated vasculitis (AAV) is high. Unfortunately, there is no reliable prognostic biomarker. This study aimed to investigate whether elevated D-dimer levels can predict hospitalisation outcomes among patients with AAV.

    We performed a retrospective analysis at a tertiary medical centre in Seoul, South Korea, between 2005 and 2019. Patients with AAV requiring hospitalisation, whose D-dimer levels were available within one week of hospitalisation, were included; patients with known alternative reasons for elevated D-dimer were excluded. Death and intensive care unit requirements were defined as adverse outcomes.

    In total, 61 AAV patients with a total of 100 episodes of hospitalisation were included. Median D-dimer levels were significantly higher in patients with adverse outcomes than in those without adverse outcomes (1.84 vs. 0.42 mg/dL; p=0.006). Consistently, the incidence of the adverse outcomes was significantly higher in the high D-dimer group (≥0.699 mg/dL; n = 40) than in the low D-dimer group (<0.699 mg/dL; n = 60) (35% vs. 10%; p=0.002). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that a high D-dimer level was a significant risk factor for adverse outcomes (hazard ratio, 4.852; 95% confidence interval, 1.320-17.833; p=0.017). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed that the high D-dimer group was associated with more 30-day in-hospital adverse outcomes than the low D-dimer group (p=0.008).

  • The COVID-19 pandemic continues to rise. In order to control the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare professionals have been subjected to increased exposure to work stress. In this systematic review, we aimed at investigating the prevalence and determinants of immediate and long-term post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) effects on healthcare professionals by the COVID-19 (SARS CoV-2) and SARS-2003 (SARS CoV-1) pandemics.

    This systematic review was conducted according to the recommendations of the Protocols for Systemic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement. Only studies reporting the prevalence of PTSD (frequency, percentage) and related risk factors (adjusted odds ratio (OR)) in healthcare professionals (HCPs) during the SARS CoV-2 and SARS CoV-1 pandemics were included. The following databases were screened Medline, Embase, PsychINFO, and Health Psychosocial Instrument (HaPI).

    A comprehensive understanding of the prevalence and determinants of immediate or long-term pandemic PTSD for healthcare workers can improve prevention, diagnosis, and management. Rigorous research measuring the prevalence of PTSD and its associated risk factors (adjusted OR) for the CoV-2 pandemic are envisaged. Although strategies to resolve immediate PTSD are key, long-term PTSD must not be overlooked.In this study, a superabsorbent polymer (SAP) comprising poly (IA-co-cellulose-co-VSA-co-AA; ICVA) core-SAP (CSAP) was synthesized through radical polymerization using itaconic acid (IA), acrylic acid (AA), cellulose, and vinyl sulfonic acid (VSA) as monomers. The absorption performances and relative biodegradability of various compositions prepared by adjusting the amounts of cellulose and VSA with constant IA and AA content were compared. Increasing the cellulose content in CSAP contributed to improved biodegradation of the surface-crosslinked SAP (SSAP) and gel strength, although the free absorbency (FA) and centrifuge retention capacity (CRC) decreased. Increasing the VSA content resulted in strong anionicity, which enables the absorption of large amounts of water. Surface-crosslinking technology was applied to the CSAP synthesized with the optimal composition ratio to increase its absorption performance and gel strength. Improved performance of the synthesized SSAP (a CRC of 30.4 g/g, absorbency under load (AUL) of 23.3 g/g, and permeability of 55 s) was achieved by selecting the optimal surface-crosslinking treatment time and the amount of distilled water in the surface-crosslinking solution as the latter was increased in the surface-crosslinking solution, the AUL and permeability of the SSAP were improved, and its biodegradability was found to be 54% compared to the 100% biodegradable cellulose hydrogel in the control group.This paper presents a framework for processing, modeling, and fusing underwater sensor signals to provide a reliable perception for underwater localization in structured environments. Submerged sensory information is often affected by diverse sources of uncertainty that can deteriorate the positioning and tracking. By adopting uncertain modeling and multi-sensor fusion techniques, the framework can maintain a coherent representation of the environment, filtering outliers, inconsistencies in sequential observations, and useless information for positioning purposes. We evaluate the framework using cameras and range sensors for modeling uncertain features that represent the environment around the vehicle. We locate the underwater vehicle using a Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) method initialized from the GPS location obtained on the surface. The experimental results show that the framework provides a reliable environment representation during the underwater navigation to the localization system in real-world scenarios. This study aims to validate a short self-report questionnaire focused on assessing binge-watching behavior and determining whether it shows characteristics similar to addictive behavior, the Binge-Watching Addiction Questionnaire (BWAQ). An online survey was adopted to administer the questionnaire in the general population (N = 1277). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses assessed both the validity and the structure of the scale in two independent samples. The statistical analyses confirmed a four-factor model (i.e., "Craving", "Dependency", "Anticipation", "Avoidance") of the BWAQ with good psychometric properties. The BWAQ can differentiate between people who adopt maladaptive watching activities from those who use TV-series as leisure and entertainment activities.

    Total shoulder arthroplasty has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for arthritis of the glenohumeral joint. Prior studies have identified longer operative times as a risk factor for complications after numerous types of procedures. We hypothesized that increased operative time, in 20-min intervals, would be associated with complications following total shoulder arthroplasty.

    Patients undergoing total shoulder arthroplasty from 2006 to 2015 were identified from the ACS-NSQIP database. Patient demographic information, perioperative parameters, and 30-day outcomes were retrieved. Pearson's Chi-square test and multivariate Poisson regression with robust error variance were used to analyze the relationship of operative time and outcomes.

    A total of 10,082 patients were included. Multivariate analysis revealed that for each increase in 20 min of operative time, there were significantly increased rates of any complication (relative risk (RR) 1.24, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.19-1.26), anemia requiring transfusion (RR 1.33, 95%CI 1.26-1.4), peripheral nerve injury (RR 1.88, 95%CI 1.53-2.31), and urinary tract infection (RR 1.24, 95%CI 1.09-1.41).

    This study indicates that increasing operative time confers increased risk for postoperative complications following total shoulder arthroplasty. We anticipate the results of this manuscript will be used for provider education, policy decision-making, and potentially to derive algorithms that can improve safety and efficiency in total shoulder arthroplasty.

    Early reports of stemless shoulder arthroplasty have shown promising clinical and radiological outcomes. The purpose of this study was to report on the mid-term results of an implant that utilises a ceramic humeral head.

    A total of 207 patients were eligible for study inclusion; 62.8% were female and mean age was 64.8 years (range 30-86). Radiolucencies were present in 2.7% of humeral zones and 14% of glenoid zones at 48-month follow-up. The revision rate was 6.3% with rotator cuff failure (2.9%) the most common indication.

Prior studies have identified longer operative times as a risk factor for complications after numerous types of procedures. We hypothesized that increased operative time, in 20-min intervals, would be associated with complications following total shoulder arthroplasty. Patients undergoing total shoulder arthroplasty from 2006 to 2015 were identified from the ACS-NSQIP database. Patient demographic information, perioperative parameters, and 30-day outcomes were retrieved. Pearson's Chi-square test and multivariate Poisson regression with robust error variance were used to analyze the relationship of operative time and outcomes. A total of 10,082 patients were included. Multivariate analysis revealed that for each increase in 20 min of operative time, there were significantly increased rates of any complication (relative risk (RR) 1.24, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.19-1.26), anemia requiring transfusion (RR 1.33, 95%CI 1.26-1.4), peripheral nerve injury (RR 1.88, 95%CI 1.53-2.31), and urinary tract infection (RR 1.24, 95%CI 1.09-1.41).   • The present investigation was aimed at exploring the phytoconstituents using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy and to evaluate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the leaf extracts.

    The extracts were obtained sequentially with petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and water using soxhlet apparatus. The anti-inflammatory property of the identified compounds using GC- MS spectroscopy was evaluated in silico. The antioxidant activity was performed by DPPH and H2O2 method whereas anti-inflammatory study was carried out by HRBC membrane stabilization method. Terpenoids were found to be major constituents in petroleum ether extract while, phenols and flavonoids were predominantly found in ethyl acetate extract.

    The GC-MS analysis of the extract revealed six major molecules including Squalene, 19β, 28- epoxyleanan-3-ol and 2-tu-Butyl-5-chloromethyl-3-methyl-4-oxoimidazolidine-1-carboxylic acid. The ethyl acetate extract showed a significant antioxidant activity (P<0.01) in both DPPH method (70.87 %) and H2O2 method (73.58%) at 200 µg mL-1 . Increased membrane stabilization of petroleum ether extract was observed in the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity study. A strong relationship between the terpenoid content and anti-inflammatory activity was obtained from the correlation (0.971) and docking study.

    In the treatment of head and neck cancer (HNC), ionizing radiation is an important modality in achieving curative objectives. However, the effective use of radiation is compromised by the side effects resulting from the damage to the adjacent normal tissue. Preclinical studies carried out in the recent past have shown that the age old dietary agent honey, which also possess myriad medicinal use is beneficial in mitigating diverse radiation-induced side effects like mucositis, xerostomia, fatigue, weight loss and to promote healing of refractory wounds.

    The objective of this memoir is to review the beneficial effects of honey in mitigating radiation-induced side effects in HNC and to emphasize on the underlying mechanism of action for the beneficial effects Methods Two authors searched Google Scholar, PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for publications up to December 2019 to assess the ability of honey in reducing the severity of radiation-induced ill effects in the treatment of HNC. Subsequently, thetail molecular mechanisms responsible for the beneficial effects using validated cell culture and animal models of study. Large multi centric clinical trials with standardised honey is also needed to understand the clinical use of honey.

Overuse of LEV leads to its frequent occurrence in the water environment. In this study, the transformation characteristics of LEV in water during the simulated chlorination disinfection treatment were explored. Fifteen major transformation products (TPs) of LEV were identified, and their plausible formation pathways were proposed. The reaction pathways were strongly dependent on pH condition, and LEV removal was relevant to free available chlorine (FAC) dose. Antibacterial activity of chlorination system was dramatically declined when FAC was more than 3-equivalent (eq) due to the elimination of antibacterial related functional groups. Genotoxicity of chlorination system increased more than 3 times at 0.5-eq of FAC and then decreased with increasing FAC dose, which were in accordance with the relative concentration of toxic TPs estimated by QSAR model. These results implied that the combination of bioassay, QSAR computation and chemical analysis would be an efficient method to screen toxic TPs under chlorination treatment. It is anticipated that the results of this study can provide reference for optimizing operational parameters for water disinfection treatment, and for scientifically evaluating the potential risk of quinolone antibiotics.In biological fluids, micro- or nano-size particles are prone to adsorb proteins and form a layer. The ambient air fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is inhaled via the lung, penetrates biological barriers and eventually reaches systemic blood circulation. However, there are very few data available regarding the adsorption of proteins on PM2.5. Here, we compared protein corona formed in plasma after bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) exposure with those formed in plasma alone. Using purified coronal proteins, we explored their adsorption behaviors on PM2.5 and their influence on biological reactivity of PM2.5. Liquid-chromatography tandem mass-spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis revealed that exposure to BALF significantly changed the blood protein profile on PM2.5. Regardless of the presence of BALF, the protein corona on PM2.5 contained an abundance of serum albumin, hemoglobin (Hb) and fibrinogen (Fg) proteins. Using Fg as a corona surrogate, we found that van der Waals interactions, hydrophobic interactions, π-π stacking and electrostatic attractions contributed to the Fg adsorption and led to the conformational changes of Fg. In addition, Fg decoration decreased cellular internalization of PM2.5 and corresponding subsequent oxidative stress responses in a murine RAW264.7 macrophage. The objective of this study was to analyze the association between the density of different types of food stores and ultra-processed food and SSB (taxed beverages) purchases in a representative sample of Mexican households. Results show that the density of convenience stores (national and in urban areas) was significantly associated with higher purchases of ultra-processed food and that supermarkets were marginally associated. Our findings are stronger for beverages where we found that convenience stores, discount stores, small grocery stores and stores speciliazed in selling candies, popsicles, soft drinks and other food were associated with higher purchases of taxed beverages. To enhance our understanding of potential sub-lethal effects of exposure to chemically dispersed-oil, sub-adult red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) were continuously exposed to a Corexit 9500 DWH crude oil chemically enhanced water accommodated fraction (CEWAF) for 3-days and transcriptomic responses were assessed in the liver. Differential expressed gene (DEG) analysis demonstrated that 63 genes were significantly impacted in the CEWAF exposed fish. Of these, 37 were upregulated and 26 downregulated. The upregulated genes were primarily involved in metabolism and oxidative stress, whereas several immune genes were downregulated. Quantitative real-time RT-PCR further confirmed upregulation of cytochrome P450 and glutathione S-transferase, along with downregulation of fucolectin 2 and chemokine C-C motif ligand 20. Genotoxicity of chlorination system increased more than 3 times at 0.5-eq of FAC and then decreased with increasing FAC dose, which were in accordance with the relative concentration of toxic TPs estimated by QSAR model. Here, we compared protein corona formed in plasma after bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) exposure with those formed in plasma alone. Using purified coronal proteins, we explored their adsorption behaviors on PM2.5 and their influence on biological reactivity of PM2.5. Liquid-chromatography tandem mass-spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis revealed that exposure to BALF significantly changed the blood protein profile on PM2.5. Regardless of the presence of BALF, the protein corona on PM2.5 contained an abundance of serum albumin, hemoglobin (Hb) and fibrinogen (Fg) proteins. Using Fg as a corona surrogate, we found that van der Waals interactions, hydrophobic interactions, π-π stacking and electrostatic attractions contributed to the Fg adsorption and led to the conformational changes of Fg. In addition, Fg decoration decreased cellular internalization of PM2.5 and corresponding subsequent oxidative stress responses in a murine RAW264.7 macrophage. These results support the view that the formation of PM2.5 corona should be considered for toxicity assessment of PM2.5.In Mexico, purchases of ultra-processed food and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) and the number of large supermarkets, discount and convenience stores are growing. The objective of this study was to analyze the association between the density of different types of food stores and ultra-processed food and SSB (taxed beverages) purchases in a representative sample of Mexican households. Results show that the density of convenience stores (national and in urban areas) was significantly associated with higher purchases of ultra-processed food and that supermarkets were marginally associated. Our findings are stronger for beverages where we found that convenience stores, discount stores, small grocery stores and stores speciliazed in selling candies, popsicles, soft drinks and other food were associated with higher purchases of taxed beverages. To enhance our understanding of potential sub-lethal effects of exposure to chemically dispersed-oil, sub-adult red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) were continuously exposed to a Corexit 9500 DWH crude oil chemically enhanced water accommodated fraction (CEWAF) for 3-days and transcriptomic responses were assessed in the liver. Differential expressed gene (DEG) analysis demonstrated that 63 genes were significantly impacted in the CEWAF exposed fish. Of these, 37 were upregulated and 26 downregulated. The upregulated genes were primarily involved in metabolism and oxidative stress, whereas several immune genes were downregulated. Quantitative real-time RT-PCR further confirmed upregulation of cytochrome P450 and glutathione S-transferase, along with downregulation of fucolectin 2 and chemokine C-C motif ligand 20.   • To compare the diagnostic value of high frame rate contrast-enhanced ultrasound (H-CEUS) in distinguishing gallbladder adenomas from cholesterol polyp lesions with that of CEUS.

    This study enrolled 94 patients with gallbladder polyp lesions (GPLs) who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. CEUS and H-CEUS were performed before surgery. The perfusion features of GPLs and the final diagnosis as determined by both technologies were compared.

    There were differences in vascular types between gallbladder adenomas and cholesterol polyp lesions observed on H-CEUS (p < 0.05), while there were no differences in vascular types between gallbladder adenomas and cholesterol polyp lesions observed on CEUS (p > 0.05). In the cholesterol polyp lesion group, there were no differences in vascular types between CEUS and H-CEUS (p > 0.05), while the vascular types were different between CEUS and H-CEUS in the gallbladder adenoma group (p < 0.05). The diagnostic value of H-CEUS in distinguishing gallbladder adenUS helps patients with gallbladder polyp lesions to choose the appropriate treatment means.
    To develop and validate a multiparametric MRI-based radiomics nomogram for pretreatment predicting the axillary sentinel lymph node (SLN) burden in early-stage breast cancer.

    A total of 230 women with early-stage invasive breast cancer were retrospectively analyzed. A radiomics signature was constructed based on preoperative multiparametric MRI from the training dataset (n = 126) of center 1, then tested in the validation cohort (n = 42) from center 1 and an external test cohort (n = 62) from center 2. Multivariable logistic regression was applied to develop a radiomics nomogram incorporating radiomics signature and predictive clinical and radiological features. The radiomics nomogram's performance was evaluated by its discrimination, calibration, and clinical use and was compared with MRI-based descriptors of primary breast tumor.

    The constructed radiomics nomogram incorporating radiomics signature and MRI-determined axillary lymph node (ALN) burden showed a good calibration and outperformed the MRI-deredicting of SLN burden in patients with early-stage breast cancer.

    This study included 82 CTEPH patients who underwent both CTPA and right heart catheterization (RHC) before and at the scheduled time of 6 months after BPA. The diameters of the main pulmonary artery (dPA), ascending aorta (dAA), right atrium (dRA), right ventricular free wall thickness (dRVW), and right and left ventricles (dRV, dLV) were measured on CTPA. The correlation of the New York Heart Association functional class (NYHA FC), 6-minute walking distance (6MWD), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) level, and calculated CT metrics with a decrease in mean pulmonary artery pressure (ΔmPAP) using RHC (used as the reference for BPA effect) was investigated. Using multiple regression analysis, independent variables were also identified.

    To develop and compare several machine learning models to predict occult cervical lymph node (LN) metastasis in early-stage oral tongue squamous cell cancer (OTSCC) from preoperative MRI texture features.

    We retrospectively enrolled 116 patients with early-stage OTSCC (cT1-2N0) who had been surgically treated by tumor excision and elective neck dissection (END). For each patient, we extracted 86 texture features from T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted imaging (ceT1WI), respectively. Dimension reduction was performed in three consecutive steps reproducibility analysis, collinearity analysis, and information gain algorithm. Models were created using six machine learning methods, including logistic regression (LR), random forest (RF), naïve Bayes (NB), support vector machine (SVM), AdaBoost, and neural network (NN).   • Nanomaterials could be a robust candidate for the removal of an array of environmental contaminants in water.A lot of studies on spinel ferrites (MFe2O4, M = divalent metal ion) and their binary nanocomposites as photocatalysts in the decontamination of wastewater have been performed, because MFe2O4 nanoparticles are relatively stable, biocompatible and low-cost efficient photocatalyst. The separation of MFe2O4 photocatalyst is easy owing to its excellent magnetic behavior. With this background, the recent developments on photocatalytic performances of MFe2O4 based binary nanocomposites were comprehensively reviewed. Especially, a focus on MFe2O4/metal oxides, MFe2O4/carbon based materials, MFe2O4/polymers, MFe2O4/metal nanoparticles and MFe2O4/other compounds for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes, emerging contaminants and inorganic pollutants has been thoroughly given. The advantages of MFe2O4 based nanocomposites as photocatalysts were also discussed. In addition, the possible pathway of active free radical generation by these photocatalysts under visible and ultraviolet irradiation has been explained. A comparison of photocatalytic activities of MFe2O4 based binary nanocomposites with recent reports has been carried out. This review concludes that MFe2O4 based binary nanocomposites have potential capacity in water purification technology. N was considered as a promising candidate for tailoring the bandgap of ZnO due to the similar atomic radius as well as lower ionization energy and electronegativity compared to oxygen, which resulted in the formation of a shallow acceptor level in ZnO. Moreover, Ag NPs could enhance the optical properties of the ZnO materials as a consequence of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect. The synthesized ZnON/Ag composite materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) analysis. The photocatalytic activity of the ZnON/Ag materials was evaluated for the efficient degradation of Rhodamine B (Rh.B) under solar light irradiation. The optimized ZnON/Ag-2 nanocomposite exhibited six times higher Rh·B degradation rate than pure ZnO. This was attributed to the enhanced absorption behavior in the solar region as well as the formation of the Schottky junction between ZnON and Ag NPs, which resulted in effective charge separation. In addition, the scavenger study revealed that •O2- radicals facilitated the degradation of Rh.B. The reusability test of the ZnON/Ag nanocomposite confirmed high photostability and efficiency of the material in each successive cycle. The present investigation illustrates a rational design of metal and nonmetal-codoped ZnO nanostructures employing a pulsed laser-assisted technique for effective application in photocatalytic remediation of wastewater.Bisphenol A (BPA), a typical endocrine disrupting chemical, widely exists in water and threatens human health. The degradation of BPA by ozone in water is limited by the gas-mass transfer due to the low solubility of ozone. In this study, a rotating packed bed (RPB) was employed to create a high gravity environment to intensify the ozone mass transfer and BPA degradation. The effects of operational parameters (rotation speed of RPB, pH of the solution, ozone concentration, BPA concentration, gas volumetric flow rate and liquid volumetric flow rate) on BPA degradation efficiency and overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient of ozone were investigated. The results show that RPB effectively promoted the ozone mass transfer and BPA degradation and can be used for the ozonation of micropollutants that have fast reaction rates with ozone. Quenching experiments suggest that both ozone and HO∙ participated in BPA degradation from acidic to alkaline environments. In addition, the effects of co-existing chemicals on BPA degradation efficiency were studied. The addition of H2O2 or Cl- had no obvious impact on BPA degradation; the addition of HCO3- is beneficial for BPA degradation while the addition of fulvic acid suppressed the degradation. These results indicate that the pH value, which affects the reaction rate between ozone and BPA, is a major factor to be considered during the ozonation of BPA in RPB.

Moreover, Ag NPs could enhance the optical properties of the ZnO materials as a consequence of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect. The synthesized ZnON/Ag composite materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) analysis. The photocatalytic activity of the ZnON/Ag materials was evaluated for the efficient degradation of Rhodamine B (Rh.B) under solar light irradiation. The optimized ZnON/Ag-2 nanocomposite exhibited six times higher Rh·B degradation rate than pure ZnO. This was attributed to the enhanced absorption behavior in the solar region as well as the formation of the Schottky junction between ZnON and Ag NPs, which resulted in effective charge separation. In addition, the scavenger study revealed that •O2- radicals facilitated the degradation of Rh.B. The degradation of BPA by ozone in water is limited by the gas-mass transfer due to the low solubility of ozone. In this study, a rotating packed bed (RPB) was employed to create a high gravity environment to intensify the ozone mass transfer and BPA degradation. The effects of operational parameters (rotation speed of RPB, pH of the solution, ozone concentration, BPA concentration, gas volumetric flow rate and liquid volumetric flow rate) on BPA degradation efficiency and overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient of ozone were investigated. The results show that RPB effectively promoted the ozone mass transfer and BPA degradation and can be used for the ozonation of micropollutants that have fast reaction rates with ozone. Quenching experiments suggest that both ozone and HO∙ participated in BPA degradation from acidic to alkaline environments. In addition, the effects of co-existing chemicals on BPA degradation efficiency were studied. The addition of H2O2 or Cl- had no obvious impact on BPA degradation; the addition of HCO3- is beneficial for BPA degradation while the addition of fulvic acid suppressed the degradation. These results indicate that the pH value, which affects the reaction rate between ozone and BPA, is a major factor to be considered during the ozonation of BPA in RPB.

  • Metal-organic framework (MOFs), also known as porous coordination polymers (PCPs), is a new kind of crystalline porous materials, which has received extensive attention in the past few decades. As a new type of sensing material, MOFs stand out from many other traditional fluorescence sensors because of its crystal characteristics, structural diversity, stable porosity and adjustable functional characteristics. In this work, the bi-functional building block containing aromatic carboxylic acid and triazole moieties, namely 3-(1H-1,3,4-triazol-1-yl) benzoic acid, was selected as the linker to synthesize [Cd(µ5-L)⋅In (1, HL = 3-(1H-1,3,4-triazol-1-yl)benzoic acid) by hydrothermal method with transition CdII metal centers. Firstly, the preliminary characterization of 1 was carried out by means of PXRD, FT-IR, and then the UV and fluorescence tests were conducted to study the fluorescence properties of 1. The crystal structure analysis indicates that CdII is the center and the ligand is bridged to form a two-dimensional porous structure. In addition, 1 has good selectivity for Fe3+ and Cr2O72-, meanwhile, it has high detection sensitivity (Ksv quenching efficiency for Fe3+ 1.2 × 104 M-1 and Cr2O72- 1.85 × 104 M-1) and low detection limit (Fe3+ 19.21 μM and Cr2O72- 12.46 μM). The results of photoluminescence test show that 1 can detect cations and anions with high sensitivity, resist the interference of other ions, and have good reusability. The chemosensor 1 has only a low potential barrier in the S1 state, indicating that it could undergo an ultra-fast excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. Furthermore, the reaction sites of chemosensor 1 and Cu2+ is theoretically predicted by the electrostatic potential analysis and the coordination mode of 1 + Cu2+-H+ is confirmed.     The aim of this study was to compare the visual outcomes of phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation (IOL) surgery in patients with and without diabetes mellitus (DM) in Malaysia over a 12-year period and to identify factors that may contribute to poor visual outcome.

    Data was retrieved from the webbased Malaysian Cataract Surgery Registry (CSR). Perioperative data for cataract surgery performed from 2007- 2018 were analysed. Inclusion criteria were age ≥40 years, phacoemulsification and IOL and senile cataract. Combined surgeries, surgeries performed by trainees and ocular comorbidities were excluded. Post-operative Best-Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) were compared. Factors affecting poor visual outcomes among those with DM were analysed using multivariate logistic regression to produce adjusted odds ratio (OR) for variables of interest.

This appears to reflect the changing times, mindsets and work expectations of millennials who comprise this cohort reflecting a need to consider possibilities of career shifts especially so in these uncertain times. This study explores the perceptions, awareness and interest in alternative career options amongst recent graduates and house officers.

    This was a study done between 2018 and 2019 using a questionnaire which was shared on various social platforms. Data analysis was done using Excel spreadsheet.

    A total of 450 house officers and 657 medical graduates responded. Expectedly 66.8% claimed lifelong passion whilst another 12.1% claimed family influence as their reason to do medicine. Most were aware of their career challenges and 40% of them were keen to consider career chising dropout rates amongst internees. Early career change engagements will give them insight into their true career goals whilst opening up opportunities for those who wish to change.

The majority of asthma-related viruses include respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinovirus, and parainfluenza. Inflammatory cytokines are supposed to play a vital role in causing inflammation of the respiratory tract as regulators of proliferation, chemotaxis, and activation of inflammatory cells.

    The aim of this study is to assess the role of Granulocyte Macrophage-Colony Stimulating Factor (GMCSF) in asthmatic airway hyper-responsiveness associated with RSV infections.

    Forty five asthmatic cases and 45 healthy individuals were studied in a cross-sectional design. All asthmatics underwent symptom score assessment.GMCSF concentrations in sputum and RSV-IgM/IgG in serum samples were measured for all participants by Enzyme Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay (ELISA).

    The GM-CSF concentration level was significantly higher in asthmatics (270.27± 194.87pg/mL) especially among moderate and seve-CSF level is associated with eosinophilia and indicates asthma severity that might be evident during RSV infection .The distinctive GM-CSF features observed in the sputum from asthmatics with RSV may be useful as a diagnostic methods to help match patients with antibody therapy.
    Maintaining good quality CPR while transporting out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients is very challenging. We aim to determine how different ambulance speed can affect the quality of chest compression performed either manually or mechanically.

    This was an observational manikin-based study. A total of 96 participants as well as two types of mechanical compression devices Lucas-2 and AutoPulse, performed one minute of continuous chest compression on BT-CPEA programmed manikin while the ambulance travelled at different speeds, i.e., idle state, 30km/hr and 60km/hr. Seven outcome variables of chest compression were measured. Performance data of different groups of compressor were compared and analysed using repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA).

    In manual chest compression, significant variation were noted among different speeds in term of average compression rate (p<0.001), average compression depth (p=0.007), fraction of adequate/insufficient compression depth and fraction of normal hands poort.
    Streptococcus pyogenes has a variety of virulence factors and the predominant invasive strains differ according to specific emm types and geographical orientation. Although emm typing is commonly used as the gold standard method for the molecular characterisation, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) has become an important tool for comparing the genetic profiles globally. This study aimed to screen selected virulence genes from invasive and non-invasive clinical samples and to characterise the molecular epidemiology by emm typing and MLST methods.

    A total of 42 S. pyogenes isolates from invasive and non-invasive samples collected from two different tertiary hospitals were investigated for the distribution of virulence factors and their molecular epidemiology by emm and multilocus sequence typing methods. Detection of five virulence genes (speA, speB, speJ, ssa and sdaB) was performed using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using the standard primers and established protocol. Phylogenetic tree branchh as emm71/ST318 (n=2), emm70.1/ST318 (n=1), emm44/ST31 (n=1) and emm18/ST442 (n=1) have clustered within a common group (Virulotype A) for both hospitals studied.

Streptococcus pyogenes has a variety of virulence factors and the predominant invasive strains differ according to specific emm types and geographical orientation. Although emm typing is commonly used as the gold standard method for the molecular characterisation, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) has become an important tool for comparing the genetic profiles globally. This study aimed to screen selected virulence genes from invasive and non-invasive clinical samples and to characterise the molecular epidemiology by emm typing and MLST methods. A total of 42 S. pyogenes isolates from invasive and non-invasive samples collected from two different tertiary hospitals were investigated for the distribution of virulence factors and their molecular epidemiology by emm and multilocus sequence typing methods. Detection of five virulence genes (speA, speB, speJ, ssa and sdaB) was performed using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using the standard primers and established protocol. Phylogenetic tree branchh as emm71/ST318 (n=2), emm70.1/ST318 (n=1), emm44/ST31 (n=1) and emm18/ST442 (n=1) have clustered within a common group (Virulotype A) for both hospitals studied. The present study showed that group A streptococcci (GAS) are genetically diverse and possess virulence genes regardless of their invasiveness. Majority of the GAS exhibited no restricted pattern of virulotypes except for a few distinct clusters. Therefore, it can be concluded that virulotyping is partially useful for characterising a heterogeneous population of GAS in hospitals. The present study showed that group A streptococcci (GAS) are genetically diverse and possess virulence genes regardless of their invasiveness. Majority of the GAS exhibited no restricted pattern of virulotypes except for a few distinct clusters. Therefore, it can be concluded that virulotyping is partially useful for characterising a heterogeneous population of GAS in hospitals.
