Although clear distinction has been accepted between cotton gauze and calcium alginates, there is still no formally recognised distinction between calcium alginates and the more rapidly gelling fibre dressings.

    Scientific and clinical evaluations were used to differentiate two different fibrous wound care products. One is derived from polymer extraction of algae (alginate dressings); the other has been manufactured from a uniquely patented carboxymethylation process that produces 100% carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based dressings. Structural differences between these dressings were evaluated with respect to three important areas of wound care management optimal wound moisture control; the ability to reduce risk of complication by locking away harmful components (e.g. bacteria); and reducing the overall cost of wound care by promoting more efficient use of nursing time.

    A third of people with diabetes will develop a foot ulcer during their lifetime. The absence of pain secondary to neuropathy often leads to a delay in diagnosis and treatment. Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) complications, such as infection and amputation, increase mortality and strain the financial resources of health systems across the world. Cellular and/or tissue products (CTPs) have played an important role in the closure of DFUs. Investigators continue to search for new CTPs that facilitate healing. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of a porcine peritoneum-derived matrix in DFU treatment.

    Patients with longstanding DFUs participated in this institutional review board-approved, multicentre, prospective pilot study evaluating the time to healing over 12 weeks. In addition to weekly assessments for wound size, investigators analysed bacterial burden using the MolecuLight procedure (MLiX) and bacterial protease (BPA) testing. As HBOT patients often require daily treatment sessions for a period of months, it is necessary for facilities providing HBOT services to adjust to the COVID-19 pandemic while still maintaining availability of this important service. Modification of HBOT session timing and chamber decontamination procedures, utilisation of telehealth services for initial patient evaluations, and acceptance of novel patient populations and diagnoses are mechanisms by which HBOT centers can adapt to the evolving model of health care delivery throughout a pandemic. While COVID-19 is not a currently accepted indication for HBOT, patients may be referred for HBOT consultation due to the post-infectious sequelae of the virus, and thus HBOT facilities must be aware of the potential uses of this treatment for post-viral complications.

Some histological patterns of KS may be difficult to recognize and must be differentiated from other vascular neoplasms. We report on a 56-year-old Peruvian man who had been diagnosed with classical KS on the right foot 2 years before the present episode. He presented in our clinic with new lesions on the left foot. Histopathological findings included areas showing epithelioid cells with moderate pleomorphism, growing in solid sheets. Immunohistochemistry showed strong nuclear staining with a granular nuclear staining pattern for human herpesvirus 8 in the epithelioid cells. A diagnosis of epithelioid Kaposi sarcoma was made, which should be considered a new histological variant.

In this article, we present a case of an S100 protein/CD34-positive spindle cell neoplasm harboring a rare BRAF gene rearrangement (KIAA1549-BRAF fusion) and discuss the clinical, histopathological, and molecular variations associated with such neoplasms.

In this article, we present a case of an S100 protein/CD34-positive spindle cell neoplasm harboring a rare BRAF gene rearrangement (KIAA1549-BRAF fusion) and discuss the clinical, histopathological, and molecular variations associated with such neoplasms.

We present 2 cases of reactive angioproliferation in the context of end-stage renal failure (ESRF) manifesting as painful cutaneous ulceration. The first case demonstrates histologic features of diffuse dermal angiomatosis. The second case illustrates a nonspecific pattern of vascular proliferation which does not conform to any of the classically described subtypes, therefore reinforcing the concept of a spectrum of histopathologic changes in reactive angioproliferations. Diffuse dermal angiomatosis has been described in ESRF alone and in association with calciphylaxis, a life-threatening condition. Recognizing the patterns of reactive angioproliferation in the context of ESRF therefore has clinical relevance.     Leiomyosarcoma is a common sarcoma of both organs and soft tissues; however, large intradermal tumors are extremely rare. Presented is a pleomorphic leiomyosarcoma in a 64-year-old man, initially considered to be a ruptured epidermal inclusion cyst. The patient had a mildly tender, enlarging soft-tissue mass with a central pore on his right upper ****. Incomplete extirpation showed a 5 × 5 cm heterogeneous, predominantly pleomorphic sarcoma with areas of fascicular and storiform spindled cells infiltrating the subcutaneous soft tissue to the underlying fascia and extending upward into the middle and upper dermis with prominent extension into pilosebaceous units. There were small foci with myxoid stroma and large areas of necrosis. CD31 demonstrated thin-walled curvilinear vessels throughout the tumor. The first desmin immunohistochemical stain near areas with myxoid stroma was negative but smooth muscle actin positive. However, desmin positivity was strong and diffuse in the spindled and more pleomorphic areas on 2 additional tissue sections.

    Dizziness after concussion is primarily attributed to effects on the brain, but traumatic inner ear disorders can also contribute. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a common vestibular disorder that can result from minor head trauma and can be easily diagnosed and rapidly treated in an office setting. The role of BPPV in pediatric postconcussive dizziness has not been well-studied.

    To evaluate the prevalence and clinical features of BPPV in a group of pediatric patients with concussion and prolonged dizziness after concussion.

  • The aim of this study was to determine the chemical profile of the essential oils (EOs) of three Moroccan lavender species (Lavandula pedunculata, LP; Lavandula angustifolia, LA; and Lavandula maroccana, LM) and to investigate, for the first time, the synergistic effect of the optimal mixture of the EOs with conventional antibiotic ciprofloxacin against three pathogenic foodborne bacteria. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis showed that eucalyptol (39·05%), camphor (24·21%) and borneol (8·29%) were the dominant compounds of LA-EO. LP-EO was characterized by the abundance of camphor (74·51%) and fenchone (27·06%), whereas carvacrol (42·08%), camphor (17·95%) and fenchone (12·05%) were the main constituents of LM-EO. EOs alone or combined showed a remarkable antimicrobial activity against the tested bacteria with minimum inhibitory concentrations (****) ranging from 3·53 to 15·96 mg ml-1 . The optimal mixture, calculated using a mixture design, corresponded to 19% LA, 38% LP and 43% LM. All combination of the EOs and the best EO mixture with ciprofloxacin exhibited a total synergism with fractional inhibitory concentration index values ranging from 0·27 to 0·37. The best EO mixture showed the highest gain of 128-fold, especially against Salmonella spp., more than that found testing the EOs separately. These findings should be taken into consideration for a possible application in the pharmaceutical and food industries.

    Data derived from 831 study participants across research published throughout March 2009 to November 2019 were amassed to examine the biological relevance of ex vivo assessments under standard conditions, ie physiological temperatures of 37°C and respiratory chamber oxygen concentrations of ~250 to 500μmol/L.

    Standard ex vivo-derived measures are lower (Z≥3.01, P≤.0258) en masse than corresponding in vivo-derived values. Correcting respiratory values to account for mitochondrial temperatures 10°C higher than skeletal muscle temperatures at maximal exercise (~50°C) (i) transforms data permeabilized human muscle. These findings detail how cross-procedural comparisons of human skeletal muscle mitochondrial function may be collectively scrutinized in their relationship to human health and lifespan.Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) are two main types of primary liver cancer, and reliable discrimination is important for optimal treatment. Aberrant glycosylation was detected in HCC and ICC. Both cross-sectional and follow-up studies were performed to establish a differential diagnosis model using N-glycans. A total of 420 participants were enrolled, with 310 patients in training cohort and 110 patients in validation cohort. The follow-up cohort was used to assess the prognosis of ICC. As the results, the diagnostic efficacy of the model was superior to alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) when identifying ICC from HCC (AUC of the nomogram 0.845, 95%CI 0.788-0.902; AFP 0.793, 95%CI 0.732-0.854; CEA 0.592, 95%CI 0.496-0.687; CA 19-9 0.674, 95%CI 0.582-0.767) in training cohort. In validation cohort, this model (AUC 0.810, 95% CI 0.728-0.891) also demonstrated high efficacy in distinguishing ICC from HCC. Furthermore, the nomogram helps to stratify ICC into two subgroups with high or low risk of survival and recurrence.     Although metered-dose inhalers (pMDI) therapy is convenient and widely prescribed, its use usually results in repetitive inhalation technique errors. One of the most repetitive errors is inhaling too fast through the pMDI. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of Clip-tone
    along with smartphone visual feedback application on the subject's inhalation time.

    Two hundred subjects were included in the study. They were randomised into four groups. Group 1 received only verbal counselling; group 2 received verbal counselling with resistance (a modified Clip-tone
    that does not produce whistle attached to their pMDI); group 3 received verbal counselling plus whistle (as audio feedback) from ordinary Clip-tone
    and group 4 received verbal counselling plus audio feedback (whistle) from Clip-tone
    and visual feedback (smartphone application). Inhalation time through the pMDI for each subject was recorded three times and inter and intra-subjects variations were calculated.

    Verbal counselling plus audio feedback and verbal counselling plus audio and visual feedbacks groups had 45/50 (90%) and 37/50 (74%) subjects respectively, having correct inhalation flow (inhaling at between 3 to 7seconds).

  • Cyanotic congenital heart disease is occasionally associated with kidney dysfunction, which is known as cyanotic nephropathy or cyanotic glomerulopathy. The clinical presentation of cyanotic nephropathy includes proteinuria, decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate, hyperuricemia, thrombocytopenia, or polycythemia. Although advances in surgical procedures have improved the prognosis of cyanotic congenital heart diseases, adult cases of cyanotic nephropathy are still rare, and there are few reports of kidney biopsy in adults with cyanotic nephropathy. Here, we present the case of a 41-year-old patient with Fontan palliation who developed nephrotic range proteinuria and had a kidney biopsy, which showed glomerular hypertrophy with segmental glomerulosclerosis around vascular poles, suggesting adaptive focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. This case provides further understanding of kidney dysfunction due to cyanotic congenital heart disease and shows the need for attention in the management for prevention of progression to end-stage renal disease and in the selection of renal replacement therapy.In the past few years there has been a rapid expansion of interest in the study of single cells, especially through the new techniques that involve single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). Recently, these techniques have provided new insights into kidney health and disease, including insights into diabetic kidney disease (DKD). However, despite the interest and the technological advances, the study of individual cells in DKD is not a new concept. Many clinicians and researchers who work within the DKD space may be familiar with experimental techniques that actually involve the study of individual cells, but may be unfamiliar with newer scRNA-seq technology. Here, with the goal of improving accessibility to the single-cell field, we provide a primer on single-cell studies with a focus on DKD. We situate the technology in its historical context and provide a brief explanation of the common aspects of the different technologies available. Then we review some of the most important recent studies of kidney (patho)biology that have taken advantage of scRNA-seq techniques, before emphasizing the new insights into the molecular pathogenesis of DKD gleaned with these techniques. Finally, we highlight common pitfalls and limitations of scRNA-seq methods and we look toward the future to how single-cell experiments may be incorporated into the study of DKD and how to interpret the findings of these experiments.A comprehensive, hands-on hemodialysis curriculum during nephrology training is necessary for effective learning and optimal patient care. Traditional instructive approaches are unable to fully meet the needs of the digitally inclined learner and are limited by time constraints and increasing clinical workload. Internet based learning (E-learning) is becoming increasingly popular in medical education and nephrology and gaining even greater relevance in the COVID era. However, it presents technical challenges and may create an environment of social isolation. A 'blended learning approach' combines E-learning with traditional methods of teaching and offers advantages over either approach alone. We have designed and implemented a formalized hemodialysis curriculum at our institution that is based on blended learning, utilizing faculty-created E-learning tools combined with traditional pedagogical methods (bed-side and classroom). The web-based tools discuss hemodialysis adequacy, principles of urea transport, hemodialysis access examination and access complications. These tools are open access and structured around the science of cognitive learning using animation, interactivity, self-assessment and immediate feedback features.     Omeprazole (OME), a most frequently used proton pump inhibitor in gastric acidosis, is evident to show many adverse effects, including genetic instability. This study evaluated toxicogenic effects of OME in Mus musculus.

    Cyanotic congenital heart disease is occasionally associated with kidney dysfunction, which is known as cyanotic nephropathy or cyanotic glomerulopathy. Although advances in surgical procedures have improved the prognosis of cyanotic congenital heart diseases, adult cases of cyanotic nephropathy are still rare, and there are few reports of kidney biopsy in adults with cyanotic nephropathy. Here, we present the case of a 41-year-old patient with Fontan palliation who developed nephrotic range proteinuria and had a kidney biopsy, which showed glomerular hypertrophy with segmental glomerulosclerosis around vascular poles, suggesting adaptive focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. Many clinicians and researchers who work within the DKD space may be familiar with experimental techniques that actually involve the study of individual cells, but may be unfamiliar with newer scRNA-seq technology. Here, with the goal of improving accessibility to the single-cell field, we provide a primer on single-cell studies with a focus on DKD. We situate the technology in its historical context and provide a brief explanation of the common aspects of the different technologies available. Then we review some of the most important recent studies of kidney (patho)biology that have taken advantage of scRNA-seq techniques, before emphasizing the new insights into the molecular pathogenesis of DKD gleaned with these techniques. Also, functional imaging with DOTANOC-PET/CT may promise of greater accuracy in the detection or exclusion of recurrent/residual JNA.

    In this prospective study, five JNA patients who underwent a DOTANOC-PET-CT scan both preoperatively and postoperatively during June 2018-March 2020 were included. Postcontrast enhancement of a definite lesion was considered residual/recurrent tumor in contrast-enhanced MRI (CEMRI). In DOTANOC-PET/CT, any abnormal uptake apart from physiological sites was considered as residual lesions. Radiological results were categorized as negative, suspicious or definite residual/recurrent tumors. Any discrepancy was resolved by endoscopic biopsies.

    The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of TP53-inducible glycolysis and apoptosis regulator (TIGAR) and its relationship with clinical pathology and prognosis; and to analyze the correlation between TIGAR expression and 18F-labeled fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (18F-FDG) PET/computed tomography (CT) parameters in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC).

    We retrospectively analyzed the data of 23 patients who underwent preoperative 18F-FDG PET/CT examinations and were confirmed to have PDAC by postoperative pathology. TIGAR was detected using immunohistochemistry. The relationships between TIGAR expression and clinicopathology and its value in predicting the prognosis of patients with PDAC were analyzed. The correlations between TIGAR expression and 18F-FDG PET/CT parameters [standard uptake value (SUV) max, SUVmean, SUVpeak, metabolic tumor volume (MTV), and total lesion glycolysis (TLG)] were analyzed.

    The expression of TIGAR was low in 34.8% of patients and high in 65.2% of patients. There was no correlation between TIGAR expression and clinicopathology. The objective of the present review is to review the hypothetical mechanisms of action and etiopathogenesis of dysgeusia in COVID-19 patients.

    Multiple scientific databases were explored, including PubMed, Medline, Scopus, Cochrane-library, LILACS, Livivo and OpenGrey. All types of articles that discussed the pathogenesis of dysgeusia were included, while articles that described dysgeusia without detail about its mode of action were excluded.

    A total of 47 articles, with different designs, were included in this review. These articles suggested direct viral neural invasion to olfactory and gustatory nerves, viral cytotoxicity to taste buds, angiotensin II imbalance, augmented pro-inflammatory cytokines, and disturbances in salivary glands and sialic acid. COVID-19 induced-dysgeusia was also associated with systemic diseases, medications, zinc, chemicals, and disinfectants.

By reviewing and analyzing the literature, we analyzed the influence of temperature on sperm, the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in the testes, and the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the male reproductive system.

    The aim of the present study was to assess the value of inflammatory factors procalcitonin (PCT), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and C-reactive protein (CRP) in the early diagnosis and evaluation of novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19).

    The data of 140 patients with pneumonia in our hospital, including 70 who had COVID-19 and 70 who had community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), were statistically analyzed. The levels of PCT, IL-6, and CRP were measured and statistically analyzed to determine the differences between the two groups. The differences in the COVID-19 group were analyzed after subgrouping into the ordinary type, severe type, and critical type.

    The PCT and CRP levels in the COVID-19 group were statistically lower than those in the CAP group (p < 0.05), but IL-6 was not statistically different between the two groups (p > 0.05). Statistically significant differences existed in IL-6 and CRP when comparing the COVID-19 subgroups of the critical type, severe type, and ordinary type (p < 0.05). However, there was no clinical meaning in the evaluation of the difference in PCT levels among the three subgroups with COVID-19.

All types of articles that discussed the pathogenesis of dysgeusia were included, while articles that described dysgeusia without detail about its mode of action were excluded. A total of 47 articles, with different designs, were included in this review. These articles suggested direct viral neural invasion to olfactory and gustatory nerves, viral cytotoxicity to taste buds, angiotensin II imbalance, augmented pro-inflammatory cytokines, and disturbances in salivary glands and sialic acid. Safety assessments (antibiotic susceptibility, biofilm activity and hemolytic activity) indicated that Virgibacillus spp. do not present a risk to human health, and this isolate can be confidently recommended as safe starter cultures for the food industry. Then, the two strains were cultured separately as starters and applied to the Gssp to analyze their influence on the flavor and quality of the product. As far as the bad flavors in Gssp such as sulfur-organic and sulf-chlor were concerned, the response values in the starter groups by G25 and G38 were significantly reduced by 39% and 65%, respectively. For the ability of strains to degrade BAs in Gssp, G25 degraded 11.1% of histamine, 11.3% of tyramine, 15.5% of putrescine and 4.1% of cadaverine; G38 significantly degraded 10.1% of histamine, 21.8% of tyramine, 18.1% of putrescine and 5.0% of cadaverine. This study aimed to explore the asthma networks of parents of children with asthma-specifically to gain insights into whom parents select to be within their networks and why; how individuals within parents' networks influence the way in which they manage their children's asthma medications, and factors driving the development of these networks.

    A qualitative research methodology utilizing semi-structured interviews with parents of children with asthma was employed to fulfil the objectives of this study.

    Twenty-six face-to-face interviews with parents of children with asthma were conducted, recorded, and transcribed. Transcriptions were independently coded for concepts and themes by the research team. Fish were fed diet supplemented with 0 Se-NP and Zn-NP (control group, CG), while fish in the other experimental groups were fed diet supplemented with 1 mg/kg diet Se-NP (Se-NP group), 10 mg/kg diet ZnO-NP (Zn-NP group), and a mixture of 1 and 10 mg/kg diet Se-NP and Zn-NP, respectively (Se/Zn-NP group) for 60 days. Fish fed diet containing Se-NP, Zn-NP, and Se/Zn-NP showed higher final body weight, weight gain, weight gain rate, specific growth rate, and lower feed conversion ratio with respect to CG (P less then 0.05) with the highest being in fish fed with Se/Zn-NP. Fish fed with Se/Zn-NP showed higher hemoglobin, red blood cells, and globulin (P less then 0.05). The new effective medium models proposed in this paper predict the individual relaxation Debye parameters based on the cooperative motion dynamics and self-associative properties of each mixture, and therefore explain the deviation of the dielectric functions of the solutions from the traditional effective medium models. Myco-Cys was able to monitor the cysteine level, apart from the oxidative stress present in the form of H2O2 in A549 cells.The potential energy surfaces (PESs) of three nitrotoluene isomers, such as p-nitrotoluene, m-nitrotoluene, and o-nitrotoluene, have been theoretically built at the CCSD(T)/CBS level. The geometries of reactants, transition states (TSs) and products are optimized at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. Results show that reactions of -NO2 isomerizing to ONO, and C-NO2 bond dissociation play important roles among all of the initial channels for p-nitrotoluene and m-nitrotoluene, and that the H atom migration and C-NO2 bond dissociation are dominant reactions for o-nitrotoluene. In addition, there exist pathways for three isomer conversions, but with high energy barriers. Rate constant calculations and branching ratio analyses further demonstrate that the isomerization reactions of O transfer are prominent at low to intermediate temperatures, whereas the direct C-NO2 bond dissociation reactions prevail at high temperatures for p-nitrotoluene and m-nitrotoluene, and that H atom migration is a predominant reaction for o-nitrotoluene, while C-NO2 bond dissociation becomes important by increasing the temperature.Metal-coordinated hydrogels are physical hydrogels entirely crosslinked by complexes between ligand decorated polymers and metal ions. The mechanical properties of these hydrogels strongly depend on the density and dynamics of metal-coordinated interactions. Most commonly, telechelic metal-coordinated hydrogels contain catechol or histidine ligands, although hydrogels containing a stronger complexation agent, nitrocatechol, have been reported. Here, we introduce a pyrogallol end-functionalized polymer that can be crosslinked with di- and trivalent ions, in contrast to previously reported metal-coordinated hydrogels. We can tune the mechanical properties of the hydrogels with the types of ions used and the density of crosslinking sites. Ions form nm-sized precipitates that bind to pyrogallols and impart distinct properties to the hydrogels strong ion-pyrogallol interactions that form in the presence of Al3+, V3+, Mn2+, Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+ and Cu2+ result in long relaxation times. The resulting hydrogels display solid-like yet reversible mechanical properties, such that they can be processed into macroscopic 3D structures that retain their shapes. Weak ion-pyrogallol interactions that form in the presence of Ca2+ or Zn2+ result in short relaxation times. The resulting hydrogels display a fast self-healing behavior, suited for underwater glues, for example. The flexibility of tuning the mechanical properties of hydrogels simply by selecting the adequate ion-pyrogallol pair broadens the mechanical properties of metal-coordinated hydrogels to suit a wide range of applications that require them to retain their shape for a given time to act as dampers.Two Pt(iv) conjugates containing one or two molecules of perillic acid (4-isopropenylcyclohexene-1-carboxylic acid), an active metabolite of limonene, were synthesized both with traditional and microwave-assisted methods and characterized. However, so far, the development of an optically enhanced protein microarray (OEPM) toward widespread commercial availability is mainly hampered by insufficient detection reproducibility. Here, we develop an OEPM platform with an order of magnitude optical enhancement induced by the interference effect. High assay reproducibility of the OEPM is achieved by optimizing the protein immobilization schemes, linking to the surface energy of the substrate, surfactant-tuned wetting ability, and the washing and drying dynamics. As a result, smearing-free and uniform spot arrays with a coefficient of variation less than 7% can be achieved. Furthermore, we demonstrate the assay performance of the OEPM by detecting five biomarkers, showing an order of magnitude higher sensitivity, many-fold higher throughput, and 10 times less analyte consumption than those of the commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Our results provide new insight for improving the reproducibility of OEPMs toward practical and commercial diagnostic assays.There are many effective medium models that accurately describe the dielectric properties of mixtures. However, these models assume that the components are non-interacting. This assumption is not valid for solutions of polar liquids, resulting in significant deviations between the measured and theoretically predicted values of the complex index of refraction of the mixtures. We present three effective medium theories by expanding the well-known Debye relaxation model for solutions of polar liquids in the terahertz (THz) regime. The new effective medium models proposed in this paper predict the individual relaxation Debye parameters based on the cooperative motion dynamics and self-associative properties of each mixture, and therefore explain the deviation of the dielectric functions of the solutions from the traditional effective medium models.
