Copyright © 2020 Fuda Huang et al.The aim of this study was to determine the combined effect of fermentation parameters and enhance the production of cellular biomass and antibacterial compounds from Paludifilum halophilum SMBg3 using the response surface methodology (RSM). Eight variables were screened to assess the effects of fermentation parameters on growth and metabolite production by Taguchi experimental design. Among these, the initial pH, temperature, and the percentage of MgSO4·7H2O in the medium were found to be most influential. The Box-Behnken design was applied to derive a statistical model for the optimization of these three fermentation parameters. The optimal parameters were initial pH 8.3, temperature growth 44°C, and MgSO4·7H2O 1.6%, respectively. The maximum yield of biomass and metabolite production were, respectively, 11 mg/mL dry weight and 15.5 mm inhibition zone diameter against Salmonella enterica, which were in agreement with predicted values. The bioactive compounds were separated by the thick-layer chromatography technique and analyzed by GC/MS, NMR (1D and 2D), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). In addition to several fatty acids, N-(1-carboxy-ethyl)-phthalamic acid was identified as the main antibacterial compound. This element exhibited a potent activity against the ciprofloxacin-resistant Salmonella enterica CIP 8039 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027 with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value range of 12.5-25 μg/mL. Results demonstrated that P. halophilum strain SMBg3 is a promising resource for novel antibacterial production due to its high-level yield potential and the capacity for large-scale fermentation. The GI.3 infections were significantly higher than non-GI.3 infections in the age groups of 0-5 and 6-18 years. The phylogenetic analysis of the ****tree revealed that VP1 genes were divided into 3 groups the GI.P3-GI.3 strains in Taiwan were genetically close to Japan and the GI.Pd-GI.3 strains were segregated into 2 other groups which were genetically closely related to China. Many of these countries lack the resources (viral strains, clinical specimens, etc.) needed for the research that could help cope with the threat imposed by flaviviruses, and therefore, an alternative approach is needed. Using an in silico approach to global databases, we aimed to design and develop flavivirus NS1 recombinant proteins with due consideration towards antigenic variation. NS1 genes analyzed in this study included a total of 6,823 sequences, from Dengue virus (DENV), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), West Nile virus (WNV), Zika virus (ZIKV), and Yellow fever virus (YKV). We extracted and analyzed 316 DENV NS1 sequence types (STs), 59 JEV STs, 75 WNV STs, 30 YFV STs, and 43 ZIKV STs using a simple algorithm based on phylogenetic analysis. STs were reclassified according to the variation of the major epitope by ****II binding. 78 DENV epitope type (EpT), 29 JEV EpTs, 29 WNV EpTs, 12 YFV EpTs, and 5 ZIKV EpTs were extracted according to their major epitopes. Also, frequency results showed that there were dominant EpTs in all flavivirus. PCK1 has been established to be involved in various physiological and pathological processes, including glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, diabetes, and tumorigenesis. Nonetheless, the association of PCK1 with aging process and the detailed underlying mechanisms of PCK1 on aging are still far to be elucidated. Hence, we herein constructed the PCK1-deficient (pck1Δ) and PCK1 overexpression (PCK1 OE) Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The results unveiled that PCK1 deficiency significantly shortened the replicative lifespan (RLS) in the S. cerevisiae, while overexpression of PCK1 prolonged the RLS. Additionally, we noted that the ROS level was significantly enhanced in PCK1-deficient strain and decreased in PCK1 OE strain. Then, a high throughput analysis by deep sequencing was performed in the pck1Δ and wild-type strains, in an attempt to shed light on the effect of PCK1 on the lifespan of aging process.

A T-maze test is an experimental approach that is used in congenital research. However, the food reward-based protocol for the T-maze test in fish has low efficiency and a long training period. The aim of this study is to facilitate the T-maze conditions by using a combination of the principles of passive avoidance and a spatial memory test. In our modified T-maze settings, electric shock punishment (1-2 V, 0.3-0.5 mA) is given at the left arm, with a green cue at the right arm. Also, the depth of both arms of the T-maze was increased. The parameters measured in our T-maze design were latency, freezing time, and time spent in different areas of the T-maze. We validated the utility of our modified T-maze protocol by showing the consistent finding of memory impairment in ZnCl2-treated fish, which has been previously detected with the passive avoidance test. In addition, we also tested the spatial memory performance of leptin a (lepa) mutants which displayed an obesity phenotype. The results showed that although the learning and memory performance for lepa KO fish were similar to control fish, they displayed a higher freezing behavior during the training phase. In conclusion, we have established a modified T-maze protocol that can be used to evaluate the anxiety, learning, and memory capacity of adult zebrafish within three days, for the first time.To further improve the precision and efficiency of structural health monitoring technology and the theory of large-scale structures, full-field non-contact structural geometry morphology monitoring is expected to be a breakthrough technology in structural safety state monitoring and digital twins, owing to its economic, credible, high frequency, and holographic advantages. This study validates a proposed holographic visual sensor and algorithms in a computer-vision-based full-field non-contact displacement and vibration measurement. Using an automatic camera patrol experimental device, original segmental dynamic and static video monitoring data of a model bridge under various damage/activities were collected. According to the temporal and spatial characteristics of the series data, the holographic geometric morphology tracking algorithm was introduced. Additionally, the feature points set of the structural holography geometry and the holography feature contours were established. Experimental results show that the holographic visual sensor and the proposed algorithms can extract an accurate holographic full-field displacement signal, and factually and sensitively accomplish vibration measurement, while accurately reflecting the real change in structural properties under various damage/action conditions. The proposed method can serve as a foundation for further research on digital twins for large-scale structures, structural condition assessment, and intelligent damage identification.The treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a challenge due to limited knowledge about the mechanisms underlying neuronal regeneration. This current study compared the expression of WNT genes during regeneration of injured cortical neurons. Recombinant WNT3A showed positive effect in promoting neuronal regeneration via in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo TBI models. Intranasal administration of WNT3A protein to TBI **** increased the number of NeuN+ neurons without affecting GFAP+ glial cells, compared to control ****, as well as retained motor function based on functional behavior analysis. Our findings demonstrated that WNT3A, 8A, 9B, and 10A promote regeneration of injured cortical neurons. Among these WNTs, WNT3A showed the most promising regenerative potential in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro.Capacitive MEMS accelerometers with area-variable periodic-electrode displacementtransducers found wide applications in disaster monitoring, resource exploration and inertialnavigation. In this work, we propose the theory,simulation and experiment of a method that can alleviate both the stress and the warpage byapplying different bonding temperature on the bonded slices. A quasi-zero warpage is achievedexperimentally, proving the feasibility of the method. As a benefit of the flat surface, the spacing ofthe capacitive displacement transducer can be precisely controlled, improving the self-noise of theaccelerometer to 6 ng/√Hz @0.07 Hz, which is about two times lower than that of the accelerometerusing a uniform-temperature bonding process.Few studies assess dog ownership and walking with both self-reported or perceived and audited or objective walkability and physical activity measures. Across two years, we examined both types of walkability and activity measures for residents living within 2km of a "complete street"-one renovated with light rails, bike lanes, and sidewalks. Audited walkability (Irvine-Minnesota Inventory) was more consistently related to dog ownership and walking groups than perceived walkability (Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale-Abbreviated). Self-reported leisure walking was **** higher (289-383 min per week) among dog walkers than among other groups (100-270 min per week), despite no difference in accelerometer-measured light or moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). CONCLUSIONS Palliative care needs strengthening in rural areas, and increased competence for all healthcare professionals is vital to increase equality in care. Geographical conditions require locally adapted solutions. Access to guidelines and interprofessional collaboration are essential. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Rural palliative care needs in Norway are improving, as exemplified by at least 1 cancer nurse assigned to each local authority, and access to guidelines and palliative tools and interprofessional collaboration.BACKGROUND Patients with cancer have high symptom burden and unmet needs and therefore can benefit from palliative care. Oncology nurses are consistent providers of care to patients with cancer and can provide palliative care to these patients. However, oncology nurses' knowledge on palliative care has not been systematically evaluated. OBJECTIVE To synthesize the current state of the science of oncology nurses' knowledge on palliative care. METHODS A systematic literature search was completed using PubMed, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and PsycINFO databases using the following key words (oncology nurs*) AND (knowledge OR attitude OR belief OR perception) and (palliative care OR supportive care OR terminal care OR end-of-life care OR hospice). The quality of identified studies was rated on a 7-point scale using Fineout-Overholt's hierarchy of evidence. RESULTS Twenty studies from 10 different countries were identified and synthesized for this review. Seventeen studies were quantitative, whereas 3 were qualitative studies. Results revealed that oncology nurses lacked knowledge on several aspects of palliative care. CONCLUSIONS Overall oncology nurses did not possess adequate knowledge on palliative care. Factors influencing oncology nurses' knowledge on palliative care included nurses' sociodemographic factors, educational status, years of experience, palliative care education/training, and clinical setting. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE This review provides evidence on gaps of oncology nurses' knowledge on palliative care and helps inform the design of interventions targeted toward enhancing oncology nurses' knowledge on palliative care.BACKGROUND Application of patient-reported outcome measures (PROM) seems to be a step toward person-centered care and identifying patients' unmet needs. OBJECTIVE To investigate the experiences of nurses when PROMs were introduced in a hematological clinical practice as part of a multimethod intervention study. METHODS The qualitative framework was guided by the interpretive description (ID) methodology, including a focused ethnographic approach with participant observations and interviews. The instruments introduced were the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 and the Outcomes and Experiences Questionnaire. Analysis was inspired by Habermas' critical theory. RESULTS The analysis revealed 2 predominant themes of nurses' experiences "PROMs are only used when there is time-which there rarely is" and "PROMs cannot be used without a strategy, just because they are present." CONCLUSIONS Nurses' experiences with PROMs depended on the systems' rationale, resulting in limited capacity to use and explore PROMs. Nurses believed that PROMs might have the potential to support clinical practice, as PROMs added new information about patients' conditions but also identified needs within supportive care, leaving the potential of PROMs uncertain. Simply introducing PROMs to practice does not necessarily actuate their potential because use of PROMs is dependent on institutional conditions and mandatory tasks are prioritized. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE This study contributes knowledge of nurses' experiences when introducing PROMs in a hematological outpatient clinical practice. However, oncology nurses' knowledge on palliative care has not been systematically evaluated. OBJECTIVE To synthesize the current state of the science of oncology nurses' knowledge on palliative care. METHODS A systematic literature search was completed using PubMed, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and PsycINFO databases using the following key words (oncology nurs*) AND (knowledge OR attitude OR belief OR perception) and (palliative care OR supportive care OR terminal care OR end-of-life care OR hospice). The quality of identified studies was rated on a 7-point scale using Fineout-Overholt's hierarchy of evidence. RESULTS Twenty studies from 10 different countries were identified and synthesized for this review. Seventeen studies were quantitative, whereas 3 were qualitative studies. Results revealed that oncology nurses lacked knowledge on several aspects of palliative care. CONCLUSIONS Overall oncology nurses did not possess adequate knowledge on palliative care. Factors influencing oncology nurses' knowledge on palliative care included nurses' sociodemographic factors, educational status, years of experience, palliative care education/training, and clinical setting. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE This review provides evidence on gaps of oncology nurses' knowledge on palliative care and helps inform the design of interventions targeted toward enhancing oncology nurses' knowledge on palliative care.BACKGROUND Application of patient-reported outcome measures (PROM) seems to be a step toward person-centered care and identifying patients' unmet needs. OBJECTIVE To investigate the experiences of nurses when PROMs were introduced in a hematological clinical practice as part of a multimethod intervention study. METHODS The qualitative framework was guided by the interpretive description (ID) methodology, including a focused ethnographic approach with participant observations and interviews. The instruments introduced were the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 and the Outcomes and Experiences Questionnaire. Analysis was inspired by Habermas' critical theory. RESULTS The analysis revealed 2 predominant themes of nurses' experiences "PROMs are only used when there is time-which there rarely is" and "PROMs cannot be used without a strategy, just because they are present." CONCLUSIONS Nurses' experiences with PROMs depended on the systems' rationale, resulting in limited capacity to use and explore PROMs. Nurses believed that PROMs might have the potential to support clinical practice, as PROMs added new information about patients' conditions but also identified needs within supportive care, leaving the potential of PROMs uncertain. Simply introducing PROMs to practice does not necessarily actuate their potential because use of PROMs is dependent on institutional conditions and mandatory tasks are prioritized. A large number of epidemiological investigations have shown that the prevalence of AR is increasing, resulting in a large social burden. Importantly, the impact of air pollution on health is a widespread concern. We aim to evaluate association of air pollution and AR risk. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This prospective study includes patients undergoing AR. The exclusion criteria will be as follows Patients with nasal infection, nasal polyps, nasal tumors, mental disorders, and immunodeficiency will be excluded. Air pollution levels of ambient air pollutants including PM2.5, PM10, sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon dioxide (CO), and O3, and patient data will be collected. The correlation analysis will be performed in air pollutants and AR risk. DISCUSSION This study will provide correlation of NO2, SO2, PM10, and PM2.5 for AR in several aspects, including symptom score, drug score, quality of life score, asthma control score, side effects, and laboratory examination such as nasal function test, serum total immunoglobulin E, and nasal secretion smear.As detection rates of non-albicans Candida species are increasing, determining their pathogen profiles and antifungal susceptibilities is important for antifungal treatment selection. The postoperation histological examination showed arranged spindle cells, adipose tissue, and nests of immature small cells embedded in a myxoid background, which is the characteristic triphasic histology of FHI. INTERVENTIONS Under general anesthesia, hip and lower extremity amputation was performed. OUTCOMES The patient was followed-up for 6 years and no signs of recurrence were found, suggesting a favorable prognosis, although a part of the residual tumor was present after the surgery. LESSONS FHI exhibits pathological and clinical characteristics.

Rotator cuff tissue was collected at the time of surgery from 140 patients. Patients were tracked for a minimum of 6 months to identify those with good or poor outcomes, using clinical functional scores and follow-up magnetic resonance imaging to confirm failure to heal or retear. The interaction between these factors is not fully characterized. We investigated the interaction between these factors to determine how to optimize reduction of transmission. We estimate that under idealistic assumptions 70% of transmission may be averted, but under realistic assumptions only 7% may be averted. We show that programmes that overwhelm laboratory capacity or reduce isolation of those with minor symptoms have increased transmission compared with those that do not programmes need to be designed to avoid these issues, or they will be ineffective or even counter-productive. Our model allows optimal selection of whom to test, quantifies the balance between accuracy and timeliness, and quantifies potential impacts of behavioural interventions. We show that the performance of a convolutional neural network (CNN), designed to detect song notes (calls) in short-duration audio segments, can be improved by combining it with a recurrent network designed to process sequences of learned representations from the CNN on a longer time scale. The combined system of independently trained CNN and long short-term memory (LSTM) network models exploits the temporal patterns between song notes. Medics volunteered to complete a demographic worksheet and have the contents of their aid bag photographed and inventoried. We spoke with medic unit leadership prior to their participation and asked that the medics bring their aid bags in the way they would pack for a combat mission. We categorized medic aid bag contents in the following manner (1) hemorrhage control; (2) airway management; (3) pneumothorax treatment, or (4) volume resuscitation. Wress the common causes of preventable death on the battlefield. However, most materiels stowed in aid bags were not TCCC-preferred items. Maximum acetate production rates of 0.12, 0.09 and 0.04 mM h-1 were achieved in the controls without sulfide at pH 7, pH 6 and pH 5. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50 qAc ) was 0.86, 1.16 and 1.36 mM [TDS] for pH 7, pH 6 and pH 5. The RSV G and F sequences were analyzed by a bioinformatic pipeline and compared to the USA samples from the same three-year period. RESULTS Both RSV A and RSV ****-circulated in South Africa during 2015-2017, with a shift from RSV A (58%-61% in 2015-2016) to RSV B (69%) in 2017. RSV A ON1 and RSV B BA9 genotypes emerged as the most prevalent genotypes in 2017. The MV adapts to new MR increasing its area to cover the enlarged annular area (mitral plasticity). As this process is often incomplete, we aimed to evaluate if augmenting the anterior leaflet (AL) and cutting the second-order chords (CC) together with restrictive mitral annuloplasty, a strategy we call "surgical mitral plasticity," could improve the midterm results of MV repair for IMR. MATERIALS AND METHODS From November 2017 to October 2019, 22 patients with chronic IMR underwent surgical mitral plasticity. Mean age was 73 ± 7 years and six were female. Mean ejection fraction was 32% ± 11%, IMR grade was moderate in 10 and severe in 12. Mean clinical and echocardiographic follow-up was 12 ± 6 months. RESULTS There was no early death, and one patient died 6 months after surgery. Ejection fraction improved from 32% ± 15% to 40% ± 6% (P = .031). IMR was absent or mild in all patients, and none showed recurrent moderate or more IMR. Tenting area decreased significantly from 2.5 ± 0.5 to 0.5 ± 0.3 cm² and coaptation length increased from 1.9 ± 0.7 to 7.8 ± 1.6 mm. All patients were in New York Heart Association class I or II. CONCLUSIONS Mitral plasticity, if uncomplete, is ineffective in preventing IMR to become significant. To examine the hypothesis that macrophage-derived MMP-9 may affect atherosclerosis, we created MMP-9 transgenic (Tg) rabbits to overexpress the rabbit MMP-9 gene under the control of the scavenger receptor A enhancer/promoter and examined their susceptibility to cholesterol diet-induced atherosclerosis. Tg rabbits along with non-Tg rabbits were fed a cholesterol diet for 16 and 28 weeks, and their aortic and coronary atherosclerosis was compared. Gross aortic lesion areas were significantly increased in female Tg rabbits at 28 weeks; however, pathological examination revealed that all the lesions of Tg rabbits fed a cholesterol diet for either 16 or 28 weeks were characterized by increased monocyte/macrophage accumulation and prominent lipid core formation compared with those of non-Tg rabbits.

As this process is often incomplete, we aimed to evaluate if augmenting the anterior leaflet (AL) and cutting the second-order chords (CC) together with restrictive mitral annuloplasty, a strategy we call "surgical mitral plasticity," could improve the midterm results of MV repair for IMR. MATERIALS AND METHODS From November 2017 to October 2019, 22 patients with chronic IMR underwent surgical mitral plasticity. Mean age was 73 ± 7 years and six were female. Mean ejection fraction was 32% ± 11%, IMR grade was moderate in 10 and severe in 12. Mean clinical and echocardiographic follow-up was 12 ± 6 months. RESULTS There was no early death, and one patient died 6 months after surgery. Ejection fraction improved from 32% ± 15% to 40% ± 6% (P = .031). IMR was absent or mild in all patients, and none showed recurrent moderate or more IMR. Tenting area decreased significantly from 2.5 ± 0.5 to 0.5 ± 0.3 cm² and coaptation length increased from 1.9 ± 0.7 to 7.8 ± 1.6 mm. All patients were in New York Heart Association class I or II. CONCLUSIONS Mitral plasticity, if uncomplete, is ineffective in preventing IMR to become significant. Conclusions In aesthetically pleasing breasts, the areolar diameter is proportional to both the breast base width and nipple diameter. Breast base width is commonly measured preoperatively in aesthetic breast procedures, and is not typically modified. Employment and good housing circumstances may destigmatize persons coping with mental illnesses. Mental health and social services should encourage paid employment, quality housing and other paths to community integration.Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an ever-increasing role in radiology (more so in the adult world than in pediatrics), to the extent that there are unfounded fears it will completely take over the role of the radiologist. In relation to musculoskeletal applications of AI in pediatric radiology, we are far from the time when AI will replace radiologists; even for the commonest application (bone age assessment), AI is more often employed in an AI-assist mode rather than an AI-replace or AI-extend mode. AI for bone age assessment has been in clinical use for more than a decade and is the area in which most research has been conducted. Most other potential indications in children (such as appendicular and vertebral fracture detection) remain largely in the research domain. This article reviews the areas in which AI is most prominent in relation to the pediatric musculoskeletal system, briefly summarizing the current literature and highlighting areas for future research. Pediatric radiologists are encouraged to participate as members of the research teams conducting pediatric radiology artificial intelligence research.In many surgical specialities, e.g., visceral surgery or urology, the use of robotic assistance is widely regarded as standard for many interventions. Interdisciplinary treatment is determined by the clinical situation, anatomical conditions and tumor entity and has the goal of reducing toxicity. Magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography-CT are used to diagnose brain metastases. Neurosurgery is used for accessible, symptomatic metastases. For localized metastases, including multiple metastases, that are surgically inaccessible, radiosurgery is used. If possible, partial brain irradiation is preferred to whole-brain irradiation. Protection of the hippocampus during whole-brain radiotherapy reduces therapy toxicity. In emergency situations, steroids provide effective support and a neurosurgical intervention may be life-saving. The options for systemic drug therapy are increasing.Biological nitrogen fixation is limited to several groups of prokaryotes, some of them reduce nitrogen as free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Male sterility is used in the development of cotton hybrids to reduce the cost of hybrid seed production by eliminating the process of emasculation. From the transcriptome analysis of genic male sterile mutant (ms1) and its background C312 of G. hirsutum, a gene encoding germin-like protein (GhGLP4) was found significantly down-regulated in different developmental stages of ms1 anthers. To explore the gene function in cotton fertility, GhGLP4 was further studied and interfered by virus-induced gene silencing. In the GhGLP4 interfered cotton lines, the expression level of GhGLP4 was significantly decreased in the stamens, and the down-regulation of GhGLP4 resulted in pollen sac closure, stigma exertion, ficoding germin-like protein (GhGLP4) was found significantly down-regulated in different developmental stages of ms1 anthers. To explore the gene function in cotton fertility, GhGLP4 was further studied and interfered by virus-induced gene silencing. Flavonoids could up regulate the low expression of autophagy related proteins (Beclin 1 (Bcl-2-interacting protein with a coiled-coil domain 1) and LC3 (microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3)) caused by AlCl3 exposure. Flavonoids could also adjust the change in adenosine triphosphatase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and malondialdehyde induced by intake of AlCl3. The results of inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) suggested that flavonoids could effectively reduce the high Al level in brain and serum of AlCl3 exposed rats. In conclusion, three flavonoids may improve learning and memory function by inhibiting excessive apoptosis and oxidative stress in AlCl3 exposed rats.The influence of peripheral physiology on goal-directed behavior involves specialized interoceptive sensory neurons that signal internal state to the brain. Here, we review recent progress to examine the impact of these specialized cell types on neurons and circuits throughout the central nervous system. To clarify the safety and effectiveness of antipsychotic medication for delirium in patients with advanced cancer receiving palliative care.
This was a prospective observational study involving consecutive patients with advanced cancer and delirium receiving antipsychotics in inpatient hospices or psycho-oncology settings. Adjusted mean scores of the Delirium Rating Scale Revised-98 (DRS; range 0-39) were calculated at baseline and Day 3 using generalized estimating equations. Adverse events over 7days were evaluated.

This study aimed to investigate the associations between OSA and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which accounts for the majority of lymphoma, using the Korea National Health Insurance Service database. This retrospective cohort study analyzed the data from the Korea National Health Insurance Service database. A total of 198,574 patients aged ≥ 20 years who were newly diagnosed with OSA between 2007 and 2014 were included. The control group comprising 992,870 subjects was selected using propensity score matching by age and sex. The mean follow-up duration was 4.8 ± 2.3 years. The primary endpoint was newly diagnosed non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The hazard ratio [95 % confidence interval] of OSA for the incidence of non-Hodgkin lymphoma was calculated based on Cox proportional hazard model. The incidence of non-Hodgkin lymphoma among patients with OSA was significantly higher than that among the controls (1.40 [1.16-1.69]). In particular, the incidence was higher in women than that in men (1.62 vs. 1.28). There was no difference in hazard ratio by age. In conclusion, OSA may be a risk factor for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Incorporating a Decision Aid (DA) about nutrition support into the general pediatric healthcare setting may improve parent and patient understanding about the risks and benefits of nutrition support options. We aimed to evaluate the acceptability and usability of our newly developed DA for parents of children in the general pediatric healthcare setting who require nutrition support.
Participants were 18 parents with a child who had received nutrition support; and 12 Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) involved in pediatric nutrition support discussions. Parents' and HCPs' ratings of acceptability and feasibility of the booklet, and parents' perceived knowledge acquisition after reading the booklet were assessed.
Parents were satisfied with the DA, reporting that it was an appropriate length and unbiased. Most parents felt the DA was relevant to their decision-making, improved understanding, and would recommend it to other parents. HCPs felt that the booklet clearly described the essential information for nutrition support options, but less certain of the booklets' impact on parent decision-making. Regardless, most HCPs would recommend the booklet to other clinicians.
Our decision aid appears to be acceptable and useful for parents deciding on nutrition support for their child in the general pediatric hospital setting.
A DA may facilitate shared decision-making through improved understanding of the risks and benefits of different nutrition support options in the pediatric setting.
