  • As respiratory failure progressed, VV-ECMO was initiated on the 6th day. To improve the respiratory failure caused by ARDS, prone position therapy was necessary. Thus, we performed osteosynthesis on the 9th day under ECMO. Prone position therapy was started after surgery.

Pathogen identification was successful in 95·6, 91·3 and 91·3% in sRAST, dVIT and AccPh, respectively. Categorical agreement in antimicrobial susceptibility testing was 89·5, 96 and 96·6%, respectively. Time to result from sample entry to reporting ranged from an average of 4·6 h for sRAST and 6·9 h for AccPh to 10·6 h for dVIT.     Known to impact bone cell behavior, surface chemical and topography modifications target improved osseointegration and long-term success of dental implants. Very few studies assess the performance of implants presenting both micro- and nanofeatures in vivo on the animal models used in preclinical studies for medical device certification.

    Implant surfaces were characterized in terms of topography and surface chemical composition. After 4weeks and 13weeks of implantation in sheep femoral condyles, forty implants were evaluated through micro-computed tomography, histopathologic, and histomorphometric analyses.

    No local adverse effects were observed around implants. Histomorphometric analyses showed significantly higher bone-to-implant contact in the coronal region of the surface-treated implant at week 4 and week 13, respectively, was 79.

  • Citizen science, and public engagement with science, has become prominent in science policy programmes. Given the expectations attached to citizen science in academic and science policy discourses, it is worthwhile to look at where the actual work is done. The case of South Africa, the study focus, is interesting because the country follows similar programmes as many developed countries, but has a socioeconomically and educationally more unequal society. Thus, South Africa presented a test example of whether the institutional similarities of science or socioeconomic and educational differences prevail in shaping the reality of citizen science. Results from 56 projects showed that nearly all of them were limited to data collection in life science fields and were managed largely by one university and mainly communicated within the respective science communities. This led us to conclude that the ambitious rhetoric accompanying citizen science in science policy programmes is not matched by reality.
    Aortic valve sclerosis (AVSc) is defined as the thickening and calcification of aortic valve cusps, in the absence of obstruction of ventricular outflow. AVSc is linked with a clear imbalance in some trace elements.

    The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between AVSc and serum levels of iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), and copper (Cu). Additionally, this research aimed to explore the clinical significance of human serum zinc, selenium, copper, and iron concentrations as a potential new biomarker for AVSc patients and to clarify the pathophysiological role in individuals at risk of developing AVSc.

    The study included 40 subjects with AVSc (25% male and 75% female) who were compared with a healthy control group with the same gender ratio. AVSc was based on comprehensive echocardiographic assessments. Blood samples were taken and Zn and Cu concentrations were determined through the use of atomic absorption spectroscopy. Se was measured using an inductively coupled plasma mass sith the healthy group's valves. In the valve patients as compared, AVSc had a high prevalence of obesity, hypertension, and diabetes.

    A total of 85 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who received radiofrequency-assisted liver resection from February 2017 to January 2020 were retrospectively enrolled in our study, in which 45 patients received the new internal cold circulation bipolar radiofrequency (New-RF) and 40 patients received Habib-4X bipolar radiofrequency (Habib-4X). Primary outcome measures were the speed of liver transection, the width of coagulation tissue, hemorrhage volume, blood transfusion rate, and operation time.

    The baseline characteristics of patients in the New-RF and Habib-4X groups had no significant difference (

This review examines the contributions of lysosomal ion channels to lysosome function, showing how ion channel function is integral to degradation and autophagy, maintaining lysosomal membrane potential, controlling Ca2+ signaling, and facilitating exocytosis. Evidence of lysosome dysfunction in a variety of disease pathologies creates a need to understand how lysosomal ion channels contribute to lysosome dysfunction. For example, the loss of function of the TRPML1 Ca2+ lysosome channel in multiple lysosome storage diseases leads to lysosome dysfunction and disease pathogenesis while neurodegenerative diseases are marked by lysosome dysfunction caused by changes in ion channel activity through the TRPML1, TPC, and TMEM175 ion channels. Autoimmune disease is marked by dysregulated autophagy, which is dependent on the function of multiple lysosomal ion channels.   • The purpose of this study was to examine the expression of estrogen receptor α (ERα) and β (ERβ), androgen receptor (AR), SIRT1, SIRT2 and SIRT3 in prostate cancer (PCa).

    From October 2010 to January 2015, 70 patients who had undergone radical prostatectomy following a PCa diagnosis were enrolled in our study. Normal prostate tissue (NPT) and prostate cancer tissues (PCAT) were separated, and the expression of each receptor in each tissue was analyzed with immunochemical staining. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify factors affecting the development of PCa.

    ERβ and AR were highly expressed in PCAT compared with NPT (p<0.05). SIRT2 was highly expressed in NPT and PCAT (p<0.05). Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that AR and SIRT2 affect PCa development.

We evaluated dementia risk with respect to the exposure dose and duration of treatment with seven bladder antimuscarinics (oxybutynin, propiverine, tolterodine, solifenacin, trospium, darifenacin, and fesoterodine) used for at least 1 year before the index date, after adjusting for age, sex, comorbidities, and medications. The dementia risk was 2.46-fold (95% confidence interval 2.22-2.73) higher in Taiwanese patients who used bladder antimuscarinics for ≥ 1 year than in those who were not exposed to this treatment. The risk proportionally increased with increasing doses of antimuscarinics for less than 4 years. Taiwanese patients aged 55 years or more on bladder antimuscarinics exhibited a higher risk of dementia.     Classification of acute kidney injury (AKI) requires a premorbid baseline creatinine, often unavailable in studies in acute infection.

    We evaluated commonly used surrogate and imputed baseline creatinine values against a "reference" creatinine measured during follow-up in an adult clinical trial cohort. Known AKI incidence (Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes [KDIGO] criteria) was compared with AKI incidence classified by (1) ****-calculation using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation with and without a Chinese ethnicity correction coefficient; (2) ****-calculation using the Chronic Kidney Disease-Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation; (3) assigning glomerular filtration rate (GFR) from age and sex-standardized reference tables; and (4) lowest measured creatinine during admission. ****-calculated distributions were performed using GFRs of 75 and 100 ml/min.

    Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with increased health care utilization and higher costs. The Tackling AKI study was a multicenter, pragmatic, stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial that demonstrated a reduced hospital length of stay after implementation of a multifaceted AKI intervention (e-alerts, care bundle, and an education program). We tested whether this would result in cost savings.

    A decision-analytic tree model from the payer perspective (National Health Service in the United Kingdom) was generated on which cost-effectiveness analyses were performed using a probabilistic sensitivity analysis, accounting only for direct medical costs. Clinical data from the Tackling AKI study were used as inputs and economic and utility data derived from relevant published literature.

    A total of 24,059 AKI episodes occurred during the study period, and in 18,887 admissions the patient was discharged alive. When all AKI stages were considered together, the cost per AKI admission was £5065 in the control arm and £4333 in the intervention arm, representing an incremental cost saving of £732 per admission with the intervention. Similar results were obtained when AKI stages were included as separate variables. Costs per quality-adjusted life year were £61,194 in the control group and £51,161 in the intervention group. At a willingness to pay threshold of £20,000 per quality-adjusted life year, the probability of the intervention being cost-effective compared with standard care was 90%.

    In roxadustat (n= 616) and placebo (n= 306) groups, hemoglobin mean (SD) change from baseline over weeks 28-52 was significantly larger for roxadustat (2.00 [0.95]) versus placebo (0.16 [0.90]), corresponding to least-squares mean difference of 1.85 g/dl (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.74-1.97;
