  • Identifying effective sources of disease resistance is an important aspect of an effective plant protection strategy. Wild species related to cultivars constitute a rich reservoir of resistance genes. Studies conducted in oat have shown that wild species are donors of resistance genes to crown and stem rust, powdery mildew or fusarium head blight. The aim of the present study was to prove whether A. fatua could be a source of effective resistance genes to powdery mildew. The genes regulated by cold stress were characterized by progressively enhanced or decreased expression, whereas the genes associated with rewarming were characterized by rapid upregulation upon return to normal temperature (28 °C). Genes such as trib3, dusp5 and otud1 were identified as the representative molecular markers of cold-induced damages through network analysis. Biological pathways involved in cold stress responses were mined from the transcriptomic data and their functions in regulating cold resistance were validated using specific inhibitors. The autophagy, FoxO and MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) signaling pathways were revealed to be survival pathways for enhancing cold resistance, while apoptosis and necroptosis were the death pathways responsible for cold-induced mortality. Functional mechanisms of the survival-enhancing factors Foxo1, ERK (extracellular signal-regulated kinase) and p38 MAPK were further characterized by inhibiting their activities upon cold stress and analyzing gene expression though RNA-seq. These factors were demonstrated to determine the cold resistance of zebrafish through regulating apoptosis and p53 signaling pathway. CFS masks were presented at a rate of 10 Hz to the dominant eye, and participants had the task to report the target's orientation as soon as they could discriminate it. Starting in China, it is arguably the most precipitous global health calamity of modern times. The entire world has rocked **** to fight against the disease and the COVID-19 vaccine is the prime weapon. Even though the conventional vaccine development pipeline usually takes more than a decade, the escalating daily death rates due to COVID-19 infections have resulted in the development of fast-track strategies to bring in the vaccine under a year's time. Governments, companies, and universities have networked to pool resources and have come up with a number of vaccine candidates. Also, international consortia have emerged to address the distribution of successful candidates. Herein, we summarize these unprecedented developments in vaccine science and discuss the types of COVID-19 vaccines, their developmental strategies, and their roles as well as their limitations.
    This study compared the independent and combined effects of hemolysis and biotin on cardiac troponin measurements across nine high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) assays.

    Parallel cTn measurements were made in pooled lithium heparin plasma spiked with hemolysate and/or biotin using nine hs-cTn assays Abbott Alinity, Abbott ARCHITECT i2000, Beckman Access 2, Ortho VITROS XT 7600, Siemens Atellica, Siemens Centaur, Siemens Dimension EXL cTnI, and two Roche Cobas e 411 Elecsys Troponin T-hs cTnT assays (outside US versions, with and without increased biotin tolerance). Absolute and percent cTn recovery relative to two baseline concentrations were determined in spiked samples and compared to manufacturer's claims.

The finite-samples behavior is studied through Monte Carlo simulations under different scenarios, presenting a real-world problem in order to illustrate its practical application. During the 21-day delay in two-stage surgery protocols, many patients report considerably reduced quality of life because of the pedicle. This prospective case series study examined the usefulness of near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence with indocyanine green (ICG) for flap perfusion assessment and identified variables associated with time to flap perfusion. Ten patients (mean age 75.3 ± 11.6 years) with diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma (n = 9) or squamous cell carcinoma (n = 1) underwent intravenous indocyanine injection and NIR fluorescence imaging for assessment of flap vascularisation 2 to 3 weeks after stage 1 surgery. NIR fluorescence imaging showed 90% to 100% perfusion areas in all patients after 14 to 21 days. Early pedicle division occurred in two patients on postoperative days 14 and 16. One minor complication (wound healing disorder) was seen following flap takedown after 14 days. There were no associations between time to flap perfusion and defect size or flap area.

  • The laparoscopic approach is considered as standard practice in patients with body-tail pancreatic neoplasms. However, only a few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and propensity score matching (PSM) studies have been performed. Thus, additional studies are needed to obtain more robust evidence. This is a single-centre propensity score-matched study including patients who underwent laparoscopic (LDP) and open distal pancreatectomy (ODP) with splenectomy for pancreatic neoplasms. Demographic, intra, postoperative and oncological data were collected. The primary endpoint was the length of hospital stay. The secondary endpoints included the assessment of the operative findings, postoperative outcomes, oncological outcomes (only in the subset of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma-PDAC) and total costs. In total, 205 patients were analysed 105 (51.2%) undergoing an open approach and 100 (48.8%) a laparoscopic approach. After PSM, two well-balanced groups of 75 patients were analysed and showed a shorter length of hospital stay (P = 0.001), a lower blood loss (P = 0.032), a reduced rate of postoperative morbidity (P  less then  0.001) and decreased total costs (P = 0.050) after LDP with respect to ODP. Regarding the subset of patients with PDAC, 22 patients were analysed they showed a significant shorter length of hospital stay (P = 0.050) and a reduction in postoperative morbidity (P  less then  0.001) after LDP with respect to ODP. Oncological outcomes were similar. LDP showed lower hospital stay and postoperative morbidity rate than ODP both in the entire population and in patients affected by PDAC. Total costs were reduced only in the entire population. Oncological outcomes were comparable in PDAC patients.Radical treatments of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with hepatic encephalopathy (HE) can be often difficult due to poor liver function or disturbance of consciousness. An effective treatment requires a combinatorial approach incorporating a treatment for HE and radical therapy for HCC that does not compromise liver function. Here, we report a case of a 78-year-old Japanese male with HCC and HE caused by splenorenal shunt. Serum ammonia levels were high. He was not suitable for surgery, percutaneous radiofrequency ablation, or transarterial chemoembolization due to the location of the tumor and poor liver function, which included HE. Thus, he underwent BRTO, with an immediate improvement in both HE and serum ammonia levels. After BRTO, he received C-ion RT as a radical treatment for HCC. After treatment, HCC was well controlled; however, at 35 months post-initiation of C-ion RT, he developed local recurrence without a further reduction in liver function status. Therefore, we repeated C-ion RT. The patient remains alive at 3 months post-treatment, with no evidence of local recurrence, distant metastasis, or toxicity. Although this is a single case report, it suggests that a combinatorial treatment consisting of BRTO and C-ion RT may increase survival rates of patients with HCC and HE.A 76-year-old man diagnosed with early-stage colorectal cancer was referred to our hospital for endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). The patient had a low platelet count (31,000/µL) due to immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). The cancerous lesion was completely resected without any adverse events. A blood test performed 1 day post-ESD showed no progression of anemia and the initial postoperative course was uneventful. However, 7 days after ESD, dark red stools were observed, and we performed an emergency colonoscopy. We stopped the bleeding twice using hemoclips and hemostatic forceps. Since the patient's platelet count remained below 50,000/µL, we started thrombopoietin receptor agonist treatment with eltrombopag (12.5 mg/day) for thrombocytopenia. Although the platelet count increased, the patient experienced rebleeding for the fourth time and underwent an emergency colonoscopy, during which we used an over-the-scope clip (OTSC) to achieve hemostasis. No rebleeding occurred after OTSC intervention, and the platelet count stabilized at approximately 50,000/µL. We discharged the patient on Day 34 after ESD. Although the guidelines do not specify a target platelet count for performing ESD, a platelet count  less then 50,000/µL should be considered low. With the advent of computational intelligence techniques, machine learning models have made tremendous progress in brain images analysis using MRI, SPECT and PEI. However, accurate analysis of brain scans is an extremely challenging task.     The laparoscopic approach is considered as standard practice in patients with body-tail pancreatic neoplasms. However, only a few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and propensity score matching (PSM) studies have been performed. Thus, additional studies are needed to obtain more robust evidence. This is a single-centre propensity score-matched study including patients who underwent laparoscopic (LDP) and open distal pancreatectomy (ODP) with splenectomy for pancreatic neoplasms. Demographic, intra, postoperative and oncological data were collected. The primary endpoint was the length of hospital stay. The secondary endpoints included the assessment of the operative findings, postoperative outcomes, oncological outcomes (only in the subset of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma-PDAC) and total costs. In total, 205 patients were analysed 105 (51.2%) undergoing an open approach and 100 (48.8%) a laparoscopic approach. After PSM, two well-balanced groups of 75 patients were analysed and showed a shorter length of hospital stay (P = 0.001), a lower blood loss (P = 0.032), a reduced rate of postoperative morbidity (P  less then  0.001) and decreased total costs (P = 0.050) after LDP with respect to ODP. Regarding the subset of patients with PDAC, 22 patients were analysed they showed a significant shorter length of hospital stay (P = 0.050) and a reduction in postoperative morbidity (P  less then  0.001) after LDP with respect to ODP. Oncological outcomes were similar. LDP showed lower hospital stay and postoperative morbidity rate than ODP both in the entire population and in patients affected by PDAC. Total costs were reduced only in the entire population. Oncological outcomes were comparable in PDAC patients.Radical treatments of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with hepatic encephalopathy (HE) can be often difficult due to poor liver function or disturbance of consciousness. An effective treatment requires a combinatorial approach incorporating a treatment for HE and radical therapy for HCC that does not compromise liver function. Here, we report a case of a 78-year-old Japanese male with HCC and HE caused by splenorenal shunt. Serum ammonia levels were high. He was not suitable for surgery, percutaneous radiofrequency ablation, or transarterial chemoembolization due to the location of the tumor and poor liver function, which included HE. Thus, he underwent BRTO, with an immediate improvement in both HE and serum ammonia levels. After BRTO, he received C-ion RT as a radical treatment for HCC. After treatment, HCC was well controlled; however, at 35 months post-initiation of C-ion RT, he developed local recurrence without a further reduction in liver function status. Therefore, we repeated C-ion RT. The patient remains alive at 3 months post-treatment, with no evidence of local recurrence, distant metastasis, or toxicity. Although this is a single case report, it suggests that a combinatorial treatment consisting of BRTO and C-ion RT may increase survival rates of patients with HCC and HE.A 76-year-old man diagnosed with early-stage colorectal cancer was referred to our hospital for endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). The patient had a low platelet count (31,000/µL) due to immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). The cancerous lesion was completely resected without any adverse events. A blood test performed 1 day post-ESD showed no progression of anemia and the initial postoperative course was uneventful. However, 7 days after ESD, dark red stools were observed, and we performed an emergency colonoscopy. We stopped the bleeding twice using hemoclips and hemostatic forceps. Since the patient's platelet count remained below 50,000/µL, we started thrombopoietin receptor agonist treatment with eltrombopag (12.5 mg/day) for thrombocytopenia. Although the platelet count increased, the patient experienced rebleeding for the fourth time and underwent an emergency colonoscopy, during which we used an over-the-scope clip (OTSC) to achieve hemostasis. No rebleeding occurred after OTSC intervention, and the platelet count stabilized at approximately 50,000/µL. We discharged the patient on Day 34 after ESD. Although the guidelines do not specify a target platelet count for performing ESD, a platelet count  less then 50,000/µL should be considered low.   • We conclude that GWI is associated with dry eye symptoms and RNFL thinning may serve as a biomarker for disease.Sex differences in jealousy responses to sexual and emotional infidelity are robust in samples of heterosexual adults, especially in more gender egalitarian nations. However, investigations of when and how these differences develop have been scant. We applied two forced choice infidelity scenarios in a large community sample of high school students (age 16-19, N = 1266). In line with previous findings on adults using the forced choice paradigm, adolescent males found the sexual aspect of imagined infidelity more distressing than adolescent females did. Nevertheless, there was no effect of age on the jealousy responses, and age did not moderate the sex difference. There were neither any effects of three covariates (having had first sexual intercourse, being in a committed romantic relationship, and sociosexuality), neither as markers of pubertal maturation nor as psychosocial environmental stimuli. Bacterial acquisition and inoculation mechanisms are linked to X. fastidiosa biofilm formation and fluid dynamics in the functional foregut of sharpshooters, which together result in egestion (expulsion) of fluids likely carrying bacteria. One key X. fastidiosa vector is the blue-green sharpshooter, Graphocephala atropunctata (Signoret, 1854). Herein, a 3D model of the blue-green sharpshooter functional foregut is derived from a meta-analysis of published microscopy images. The model is used to illustrate preexisting and newly defined anatomical terminology that is relevant for investigating fluid dynamics in the functional foregut of sharpshooters. The vivid 3D illustrations herein and supplementary interactive 3D figures are suitable resources for multidisciplinary researchers who may be unfamiliar with insect anatomy. Clinical T status was significantly higher in the LAC group (p = 0.016). Operation time was shorter and blood loss was lower in the SILS-O group compared to the LAC group (117 vs. 197 min, p = 0.027; 10 vs. 25 mL, p = 0.024, respectively). In the SILS-O group, surgical outcomes including operation time, blood loss, number of retrieved lymph nodes, and postoperative complications were not significantly different between those performed by experts and by non-experts. Longer operation time (p = 0.041) was significantly associated with complications on univariate and multivariate analyses (odds ratio 2.514, 95%CI 1.047-6.035, p = 0.039). Recently, new statistical analyses have revealed true scale-free networks are rare. We provide a first application of these methods to data sampled from across two distinct levels of biological organization individuals and ecosystems. We analyze a large ensemble of biochemical networks including networks generated from data of 785 metagenomes and 1082 genomes (sampled from the three domains of life). The results confirm no more than a few biochemical networks are any more than super-weakly scale-free. Additionally, we test the distinguishability of individual and ecosystem-level biochemical networks and show there is no sharp transition in the structure of biochemical networks across these levels of organization moving from individuals to ecosystems. This result holds across different network projections. Our results indicate that while biochemical networks are not scale-free, they nonetheless exhibit common structure across different levels of organization, independent of the projection chosen, suggestive of shared organizing principles across all biochemical networks.Oligodendrocytes (OLs), myelin-producing glia in the central nervous system (CNS), produce a myelin extension that enwraps axons to facilitate action potential propagation. In this study using oligodendrocyte precursor cell (OPC) cultures and an ex vivo cerebellar slice system, we found that the extract from H. erinaceus mycelium (HEM) not only promoted the differentiation of OPCs to OLs in the differentiation medium, but also increased the level of myelin basic protein (MBP) on neuronal fibers. Moreover, daily oral administration of HEM into neonatal rat pups for 7 days enhanced MBP expression and OLs in the corpus callosum of the postnatal rat brain. The effect of HEM-derived bioactive compounds, the diterpenoid xylosides erinacine A (HeA) and HeC and a sesterterpene with 5 isoprene units called HeS, were further evaluated.

Furthermore, the nanocrystal core also forms a triskelion structure. The focus of our study is a colloidal quantum dot with a Cd16Se7Te3 core (and a charge of +12) capped with negatively charged surface ligands to achieve charge neutrality-in the simplest instance, 12 Cl--to form the colloidal quantum dot Cd16Se7Te3Cl12. The small size of the core (for which almost all atoms are surface atoms), the high positive charge that destabilizes the core, the mixed (Cd/Te) composition that creates mechanical strain in the core, and the inclusion of precisely three Te atoms in the predominantly Se core all play critical roles in the spontaneous formation of the triskelion structure.Many lipophilic polyphenols have low bioavailability because of their poor solubility and chemical stability within the human gut. The encapsulation of these polyphenols within digestible lipid droplets can improve their solubility and stability. However, there is currently a poor understanding of how the molecular and physicochemical properties of specific polyphenols impact these characteristics. In this study, the factors influencing the solubility and stability of different polyphenols (curcumin, resveratrol, and quercetin) under simulated gastrointestinal conditions were examined when they were delivered in the form of soybean oil-in-water nanoemulsions containing quillaja saponin-coated droplets (d32 ≈ 0.15 μm; ζ = -63 mV; pH 5). The polyphenols were loaded into the lipid droplets using a pH-driven method, which is based on the pH-dependent electrical charge, oil-water partitioning, and water-solubility of these molecules. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/cpi-203.html The encapsulation efficiency of all three polyphenols was relatively high (75-87%). However, their chemical stability under gastrointestinal conditions (i.e., the % remaining after exposure to gastrointestinal conditions) differed considerably quercetin (44%), curcumin (92%), and resveratrol (100%). This effect was mainly attributed to the lower logD value of quercetin (2.17) than those of resveratrol (3.39) and curcumin (4.12). Usually, the intercalation in 2H-NbSe2 enriches the CDW, enhances the c-axis lattice parameter, and distorts the Fermi surface, which result in a decrease in the superconducting transition temperature (Tc). The rate of decrease of Tc depends on the electronic structure, size, valence, magnetic nature, and electronegativity of the intercalating species. Herein, we report an unusual effect of Mg intercalation on the superconductivity of 2H-Mg x NbSe2 (x = 0.0, 0.02, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10, and 0.12) synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. Unlike other s- and p-block elements/species as intercalants (Rb, Sn, Ga, and Al) that have a sharp detrimental effect on the Tc of 2H-NbSe2 within 1-5% of intercalation, Mg is found to be an exception. Upon Mg intercalation up to x = 0.06, no remarkable changes in Tc as compared to the parent 2H-NbSe2 (Tc ∼ 6.7 K) are observed, and further intercalation results in a small decrease in Tc (for x = 0.12, Tc = 6.2 K). From heat-capacity measurements, it is inferred that superconducting Mg-intercalated 2H-NbSe2 exhibits strong electron-phonon coupling. Electronic structure calculations on two s-block element intercalated compounds of formula M0.125NbSe2 (M = Mg, Rb) show that Rb s-, p-, and d-states completely overlap with the Nb d states, while the Mg s states lie in a low-energy region as compared to Nb d states, indicating a weak interaction between the intercalant and the Nb sublattice in Mg0.125NbSe2 as compared to Rb0.125NbSe2. These results suggest that the electronic states of the Nb network in 2H-NbSe2 are least altered with Mg intercalation, which could be one of the reasons for the minimal effect on the Tc with intercalation.Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) and mass spectrometry (MS) techniques were used to monitor diketopiperazine (DKP) formation from the peptide FPG8K at multiple defined temperatures in methanol, ethanol, propanol, and water, with the motivation to study the effect of solvent polarity on spontaneous solution dissociation. The reaction rate increases with decreasing solvent polarity. The observed rates of trans → cis isomerization of Phe1-Pro2 and the cis-Pro2 isomer dissociation result in the cis isomer growing in abundance relative to the trans isomer throughout the reaction in all solvents. Analysis of rate constants derived from the data using a sequential unimolecular kinetics model that includes hidden intermediate states yields transition state thermodynamic values for both trans → cis isomerization of Phe1-Pro2 and dissociation. The measured thermochemistry appears to be closely correlated with these solvents' dielectric constants a lower solvent dielectric constant accelerates the reaction by reducing the enthalpic barrier, albeit with slight entropic restriction.

Herein, we report an unusual effect of Mg intercalation on the superconductivity of 2H-Mg x NbSe2 (x = 0.0, 0.02, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10, and 0.12) synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. Unlike other s- and p-block elements/species as intercalants (Rb, Sn, Ga, and Al) that have a sharp detrimental effect on the Tc of 2H-NbSe2 within 1-5% of intercalation, Mg is found to be an exception. Upon Mg intercalation up to x = 0.06, no remarkable changes in Tc as compared to the parent 2H-NbSe2 (Tc ∼ 6.7 K) are observed, and further intercalation results in a small decrease in Tc (for x = 0.12, Tc = 6.2 K). From heat-capacity measurements, it is inferred that superconducting Mg-intercalated 2H-NbSe2 exhibits strong electron-phonon coupling. Electronic structure calculations on two s-block element intercalated compounds of formula M0.125NbSe2 (M = Mg, Rb) show that Rb s-, p-, and d-states completely overlap with the Nb d states, while the Mg s states lie in a low-energy region as compared to Nb d states, indicating a weak interaction between the intercalant and the Nb sublattice in Mg0.125NbSe2 as compared to Rb0.125NbSe2.     The COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing can have adverse impacts on adult people with epilepsy (PWE).

    To investigate the seizure frequency, the perceived well-being, and the presence of anxiety symptoms in PWE during the COVID-19 pandemic period.

    Data from a questionnaire on the repercussions of COVID-19 were analyzed in relation to the clinical variables of 114 PWE, with a significance level of p<0.05.

    There were 26 cases of COVID-19 in PWE and/or family members (22.8%). During the pandemic period, 11 PWE (9.6%) reported an increase in seizures, but unrelated to COVID-19. Also, the number of crises in PWE with previous depressive disorders increased, with differences between epilepsies. Symptoms of depression, impaired well-being, and concern for their lifestyle were significant in PWE with a previous diagnosis of depression. Impaired well-being, increased anxiety, nervousness, and tiredness, and the concern with being infected were mentioned by a high number of PWE in the pandemic.

    Biomarkers associated with mucin 1, such as Krebs von den Lungen-6 and carbohydrate antigen (CA) 15-3, are increased in various interstitial lung diseases. Our aim was to determine whether CA 15-3 could be considered a biomarker of disease severity in patients with chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis (cHP).

    This was a prospective observational study involving adult patients with cHP. Serum levels of CA 15-3 were measured and were correlated with variables related to disease severity and extension. HRCT scans were quantitatively analyzed using a computational platform and an image analysis tool (Computer Aided Lung Informatics for Pathology Evaluation and Rating). CA 15-3 levels were normalized by logarithmic transformation.

    The sample comprised 41 patients. The mean age of the patients was 60.1 ± 11.6 years. The mean FVC in % of predicted was 70.3% ± 17.3%, and the median of the serum level of CA 15-3 was 48.1 U/mL. CA 15-3 levels inversely correlated with FVC in % of predicted (r = -0,30; p = 0,05), DLCO in % of predicted (r = -0,54; p < 0,01), and SpO2 at the end of a 4-min step test (r = -0,59; p < 0,01), but they directly correlated with total quantitative HRCT scores (r = 0,47; p = 0,004), especially regarding ground-glass opacities (r = 0.58; p < 0,001).

Genotoxicity was assessed by micronuclei formation, and cell alterations were analyzed using light microscopy. Both biological assays were performed using the eluate obtained from specimens after 24, 72, or 168 hours of incubation. Mechanical characterization was assessed through the ultimate tensile strength and the water sorption and solubility tests. The significance level of α = 0.05 was used for all statistical analyses. All the materials promoted a cell viability lower than 60% in all evaluated times. In general, the cell viability was significantly reduced after 72 and 168h of specimens' incubation. Considering the factor material, there were not statistical differences in the cell viability (p = 0.156). The genotoxicity was not statistically significant among the groups in the different periods of time (p > 0.05). Differences in the ultimate tensile strength values were not statistically significant different among the groups (p = 0.125). Periobond ® showed the higher water sorption values (p less then 0.001). Regarding solubility, there were no statistical differences between the groups (p = 0.098). All the periodontal dressing materials evaluated in this study exerted a cytotoxic effect against mouse fibroblasts, and their toxicity became more evident over time.     Firstly, a total of 336 Indigenous Australians aged 60 years and over from five NSW areas participated in assessments on mental health, physical activity participation, and childhood trauma. Secondly, a focus group of seven Indigenous Australians was conducted to evaluate barriers and facilitators to physical activity.

    Regression and moderation analyses examined links between depression, childhood trauma, and physical activity. Thematic analysis was conducted exploring facilitators and barriers to physical activity following the focus group.

    To evaluate 3 formulations of copper (Cu)-based self-sanitizing surfaces for antimicrobial efficacy and durability over 1 year in inpatient clinical areas and laboratories.

    Randomized control trial.

    We assessed 3 copper formulations (1) solid alloy 80% Cu-20% Ni (integral copper), (2) spray-on 80% Cu-20% Ni (spray-on) and (3) 16% composite copper-impregnated surface (CIS). In total, 480 coupons (1 cm2) of the 3 products and control surgical grade (AISI 316) stainless steel were inserted into gaskets and affixed to clinical carts used in patient care areas (including emergency and maternity units) and on microbiology laboratory bench work spaces (n = 240). The microbial burden and assessment of resistance to wear, corrosion, and material compatibility were determined every 3 months.     The study aimed to determine whether the adjusted protocol 'unwell for no clear reason' led to a safer and more efficient referral and to evaluate the efficiency and safety of the primary care protocols (PCPs). The study ran in cross-sectional design involving patients, General Practitioner Cooperatives and telephone operators. A random sample of calls to 1733 and patient referrals were assessed on efficiency and safety.

    During 6 months in 2018, 11622 calls to 1733 were registered. Seven hundred fifty-six of them were allocated to 'unwell for no clear reason', and a random sample of 180 calls was audited. To evaluate the PCPs, 202 calls were audited. The efficiency and safety of the protocol 'unwell for no clear reason' improved, and safety levels for under- and over-triage were not exceeded. The GP's judged that 9/10 of all patient encounters were correctly referred.

We assessed 3 copper formulations (1) solid alloy 80% Cu-20% Ni (integral copper), (2) spray-on 80% Cu-20% Ni (spray-on) and (3) 16% composite copper-impregnated surface (CIS). In total, 480 coupons (1 cm2) of the 3 products and control surgical grade (AISI 316) stainless steel were inserted into gaskets and affixed to clinical carts used in patient care areas (including emergency and maternity units) and on microbiology laboratory bench work spaces (n = 240). The microbial burden and assessment of resistance to wear, corrosion, and material compatibility were determined every 3 months. This study demonstrated that the 1733-telephone triage system for out-of-hours care is successful if protocols, flow charts and emergency levels are well defined, monitored and operators are trained.   • Sports-related injuries contribute to a considerable proportion of pediatric and adolescent craniofacial trauma, which can have severe and longstanding consequences on physical and mental health. The growing popularity of sports within this at-risk group warrants further characterization of such injuries in order to enhance management and prevention strategies. In this study, the authors summarized key trends in 1452 sports-related injuries among individuals aged 16 to 19 using the American College of Surgeon's Trauma Quality Improvement Program database from 2014 to 2016. The authors observed a preponderance of injuries associated with skateboarding, snowboarding, and skiing, with significantly higher percentages of traumatic brain injuries among skateboarding-related traumas. Notably, we observed that traumatic brain injurie rates were slightly higher among subjects who wore helmets.     Traumatic frontal fractures result from high force injuries and can result in significant morbidity and mortality. The purpose of the current study is to evaluate our Montreal General Hospital (MGH) experience with frontal bone fractures.

    A comprehensive review of our trauma database was performed. All adult patients (>18 years) presenting with a diagnosis of frontal sinus fracture were identified. A thorough retrospective electronic medical records search was performed and relevant data extracted. Specifically, all cases of ocular injury or sequelae were identified and an in-depth review was performed.

    Between 2008 and 2014, 10,189 trauma patients presented to the MUHC Level 1 trauma center. A total of 1277 patients presented with a facial fracture and 140 had a frontal sinus fracture. The mean age was 43.5 years, 90% were male and the mean hospitalization time was 16.2 days. A significant proportion of patients suffered concomitant craniomaxillofacial fractures including orbital (79%), maxillary (66%), nasal (64%), zygomaticomaxillary complex (34%), nasoorbitoethmoid (31%), Lefort types I-III (18%), and mandibular (8%). Associated cervical spine injuries were documented in 16% of patients. Ocular injuries were present in 30% of subjects. 26% of patients had some form of permanent sequelae from their trauma, mainly neurological.

    A 66-year old Hispanic woman with systemic lupus erythematosus presented to the plastic surgery clinic with complaints of drooling and being unable to smile. She experienced several episodes of left facial paralysis and was diagnosed with BP at an outside institution. Each episode was only partially responsive to steroid therapy. Imaging at our institution demonstrated lobulated enhancement along the vertical and extratemporal segments of the facial nerve, which prompted surgical intervention. The patient underwent left transmastoid approach for removal of the lesion involving the facial nerve followed by facial nerve reanimation via gracilis free flap without complication.

  • After multivariate Cox regression analysis, we established 2 prognostic prediction models and calculated the area under the 1-, 3-, and 5-year curve (AUC) values of DEMs and DEGs respectively.     Chrysin, one of the main active constituents of flavonoids, is known for demonstrating protective effects against various types of cancer including cervical cancer. The aim of this study was to determine apoptosis induction and antiproliferative action of chrysin on human cervical cancer cells.

    In this study, attempts have been made to establish anticancer role of chrysin on HeLa cells. MTT, mitochondrial potential, DNA fragmentation, annexin V/propidium iodide assays, qPCR and protein profiling were performed.

    Chrysin treated HeLa cells showed time and dose dependent decrease in cell viability and demonstrated profound effects on nuclear morphology and DNA fragmentation. Chrysin treatment increased the expression of proapoptotic genes BAD, BAX, BID, BOK and APAF1, TNF, FASL, FAS, FADD and caspases (like caspase 3, caspase 7, caspase 8 and caspase 9), whereas it decreased the expression level of antiapoptotic genes MCL-1, NAIP, XIAP and Bcl-2 and cell cycle regulatory genes CCNB1, CCNB2, CCND1, CCND2, CCND3, CCNE2, CDK4 and CDK2 at transcript level.     To evaluate whether gadolinium ethoxybenzyl diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA) enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the measurements of quantitative and qualitative parameters on hepatobiliary phase images can predict the risk of postoperative complications in patients underwent living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) PATIENTS AND METHODS We obtained Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced 3 Tesla MRI before living donor hepatectomy in donors (donor group; n=30) and after LDLT in their recipients (recipient group; n=30). MRIs were evaluated in terms of quantitative and qualitative variables. Quantitative parameters included relative liver enhancement value, biliary signal intensity value, and muscle signal index value. Qualitative parameters included visual evaluation of the liver and biliary enhancement on hepatobiliary phase images. Patients were followed up for postoperative biliary and vascular complications and divided according to the presence and absence of complications. The relationship between MRI parameters and postoperative complications was statistically analyzed.

Patients were followed up for postoperative biliary and vascular complications and divided according to the presence and absence of complications. The relationship between MRI parameters and postoperative complications was statistically analyzed.
