In this study, we investigated the effects of microbial interactions and in-culture produced antibiotics on the production of secondary metabolites by Vibrio coralliilyticus and Photobacterium galatheae, two co-occurring marine Vibrionaceae. In co-culture, production of andrimid by V. coralliilyticus and holomycin by P. galatheae, were, compared to monocultures, increased 4.3 and 2.7 fold, respectively. Co-cultures with the antibiotic deficient mutant strains (andrimid- and holomycin-) did not reveal a significant role for the competitor's antibiotic as stimulator of own secondary metabolite production. Furthermore, we observed that V. coralliilyticus detoxifies holomycin by sulphur-methylation.     Illumina ® Omni2.5 BeadChip and imputed data were compared between 21 children with severe OM (multiple episodes chronic suppurative OM and/or perforations or tympanic sclerosis) and 370 individuals without this phenotype, followed by FUnctional Mapping and Annotation (FUMA). Exome data filtered for common (EXaC_all≥0.1) putative deleterious variants influencing protein coding (CADD-scaled scores ≥ 15) were used to compare 15 severe OM cases with 9 mild cases (single episode of acute OM recorded over ≥ 3 consecutive years). Rare (ExAC_all≤0.01) such variants were filtered for those present only in severe OM. Enrichr was used to determine enrichment of genes contributing to pathways/processes relevant to OM.

    FUMA analysis identified two plausible genetic risk loci for severe OM NR3C1 (Pimputed_1000G=3.62x10 -6) encoding the glucocorticoid receptor, and NREP (Pimputed_1000G=3.67x10 -6) encoding neuronal regeneration related protein. Exome analysis showed (i) association of severe OM with variants influencing protein coding (CADD-scaled ≥ 15) in a gene-set (GRXCR1, CDH23, LRP2, FAT4, ARSA, EYA4) enriched for Mammalian Phenotype Level 4 abnormal hair cell stereociliary bundle morphology and related phenotypes; (ii) rare variants influencing protein coding only seen in severe OM provided gene-sets enriched for "abnormal ear" (LMNA, CDH23, LRP2, MYO7A, FGFR1), integrin interactions, transforming growth factor signalling, and cell projection phenotypes including hair cell stereociliary bundles and cilium assembly.

Histone 3 lysine 9 methylation (H3K9me) and histone hypoacetylation are conserved epigenetic hallmarks of heterochromatin. In fission yeast, RNA interference (RNAi) plays a key role in H3K9 methylation and heterochromatin silencing. However, how RNAi machinery and histone deacetylases (HDACs) are coordinated to ensure proper heterochromatin assembly is still unclear. Previously, we showed that Dpb4, a conserved DNA polymerase epsilon subunit, plays a key role in the recruitment of HDACs to heterochromatin during S phase. Here, we identified a novel RNA-binding protein Dri1 that interacts with Dpb4. GFP-tagged Dri1 forms distinct foci mostly in the nucleus, showing a high degree of colocalization with Swi6/Heterochromatin Protein 1. Deletion of dri1+ leads to defects in silencing, H3K9me, and heterochromatic siRNA generation. We also showed that Dri1 physically associates with heterochromatic transcripts, and is required for the recruitment of the RNA-induced transcriptional silencing (RITS) complex via interacting with the complex. Furthermore, loss of Dri1 decreases the association of the Sir2 HDAC with heterochromatin. We further demonstrated that the C-terminus of Dri1 that includes an intrinsically disordered (IDR) region and three zinc fingers is crucial for its role in silencing. Together, our evidences suggest that Dri1 facilitates heterochromatin assembly via the RNAi pathway and HDAC.

  • To the best of our knowledge, the proposed DSRAE is among the early efforts in developing unified models that can extract connectome-scale spatial-temporal networks from 4D fMRI data simultaneously.To investigate whether dynamic functional connectivity (DFC) metrics can better identify minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) patients from cirrhotic patients without any hepatic encephalopathy (noHE) and healthy controls (HCs). Resting-state functional MRI data were acquired from 62 patients with cirrhosis (MHE, n = 30; noHE, n = 32) and 41 HCs. We used the sliding time window approach and functional connectivity analysis to extract the time-varying properties of brain connectivity. Three DFC characteristics (i.e., strength, stability, and variability) were calculated. For comparison, we also calculated the static functional connectivity (SFC). A linear support vector machine was used to differentiate MHE patients from noHE and HCs using DFC and SFC metrics as classification features. The leave-one-out cross-validation method was used to estimate the classification performance. The strength of DFC (DFC-Dstrength) achieved the best accuracy (MHE vs. noHE, 72.5%; MHE vs. HCs, 84%; and noHE vs. HCs, 88%) compared to the other dynamic features. Compared to static features, the classification accuracies of the DFC-Dstrength feature were improved by 10.5%, 8%, and 14% for MHE vs. noHE, MHE vs. HC, and noHE vs. HCs, respectively.     GDP-D-mannose pyrophosphorylase (GMP) is one of the key enzymes determining ascorbic acid (AsA) biosynthesis. However, little information about GMP genes is currently available for the Rosaceae species, especially in the AsA-riched cultivated octoploid strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa).

    To identify the all the GMP genes in Rosaceae, as well as the predominant homologues and the role of GMP genes in strawberry AsA accumulation.

    In the present study, we performed genome-wide identification and comprehensive analysis of the duplicated GMP genes in strawberry and other Rosaceae species by bioinformatics methods, the expression of the GMP genes from cultivated strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa, FaGMP) was specifically analyzed by qPCR. Finally, the FaGMP4 was transiently overexpressed in strawberry to estimate the role of GMP in regulating AsA accumulation in strawberry.

    As results, a total of 28 GMP genes were identified in the five Rosaceae species. The origins of duplication events analysis suggested that of FaGMP paralogs during fruit ripening, while FaGMP4 expressed higher in the variety containing higher AsA. Overexpression of FaGMP4 in strawberry significantly enhanced AsA accumulation. Furthermore, the expression of FaGMP4 under the treatment of blue and red light was largely increased in leaves while significantly inhibited in fruit. These results revealed the vital role of FaGMP4 in regulating AsA in strawberry.
    To analyse the current provision of lower extremity amputations (LEA) in Irish public hospitals by patient characteristics and assess the potential savings for reducing numbers if a national multi-disciplinary foot protection clinic (MDFPC) was established nation-wide.

    Patient characteristics of LEA conducted during 2016-2019 were analysed based on discharge data from the national hospital inpatient enquiry system. Reported consequences from existing literature were used to extrapolate national consequences.

    Public hospitals registered 3104 hospital admissions with LEA during 2016-2019. 68% (n=2099) of these were minor amputations. About 76% (n=1592) of minor amputations and 52% (n=525) of major amputations were performed on patients with a diagnosis of diabetes. If the implementation of a national MDFPC programmed could reduce the number of diabetic amputations by 20%, 80 minor and 26 major amputations could be avoided annually. This would avoid nearly 3000 hospital bed days and correspond to a potential annual saving of €3M.

So, the current study aimed to explore the effect of reminiscence therapy on cognitive impairment, anxiety, depression, and disease recurrence in AIS patients.

    A total of 216 first-ever AIS patients were enrolled and randomized into reminiscence therapy group or control group in 11 ratio. MMSE, HADS, and Zung SAS/SDS scales were evaluated at the discharge from hospital (M0), 3months (M3), 6months (M6), 9months (M9), and 12months (M12), respectively. Besides, patients were further followed up to 36months for recurrence-free survival (RFS) calculation.

    Reminiscence therapy group showed higher MMSE score at M9 and M12, lower cognitive impairment rate by MMSE at M12 compared to control group. As to anxiety, HADS-anxiety score and anxiety rate by HADS were of no difference at each time point, while SAS score and anxiety rate by SAS were lower at M12 in reminiscence therapy group compared with control group. Regarding depression, HADS-depression score and depression rate by HADS at M12, SDS score at M9 and M12, and depression rate by SDS at M12 were all lower in reminiscence therapy group compared with control group.   • The success of implementing next-generation sequencing (NGS) into routine clinical practice depends on the accuracy of the testing. Different assays and NGS platforms can achieve differing results. Each assay's limitations need to be considered to ensure the quality of precision medicine in clinical practice.Reablement is described as a person-centred, goal-directed intervention with a view to regain, maintain or improve the independence of older clients. Although evidence to support the use of reablement as a multidisciplinary, home-based intervention for community-dwelling older adults is increasing, there is limited knowledge about what it means for care staff who provide client-based services. This study, which was nested in a larger program evaluation, used a descriptive qualitative approach to explore direct care staff and care coordinator experiences of translating a reablement training program into practice for older people in a regional Australian community. Two months after the training program four focus groups were conducted with 13 care coordinators to assimilate staff experiences with development of care plans, systems, processes and practices of reablement. In addition, four direct care staff took part in individual interviews, which centred on eliciting their experience using the reablement approach with clients. Results from the care coordinator focus groups and the direct care staff interviews highlight the importance of reablement staff training and the involvement of staff in the development and delivery of a reablement approach to client-centred care. A number of organisational and client-centred challenges such as communication, functional partnerships, staff education and resourcing are also uncovered in this research into the development of a reablement-focused care service in a regional setting. Overall there is support for the dominating discourse around healthy ageing and the policy approach of ageing in place to support wellness.The spatial accuracy of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) may be as small as a few millimeters. Despite such great potential, navigated TMS (nTMS) mapping is still underused for the assessment of motor plasticity, particularly in clinical settings. Here, we investigate the within-limb somatotopy gradient as well as absolute and relative reliability of three hand muscle cortical representations (MCRs) using a comprehensive grid-based sulcus-informed nTMS motor mapping. We enrolled 22 young healthy male volunteers. Two nTMS mapping sessions were separated by 5-10 days. Motor evoked potentials were obtained from abductor pollicis brevis (APB), abductor digiti minimi, and extensor digitorum communis. In addition to individual MRI-based analysis, we studied normalized MNI MCRs. For the reliability assessment, we calculated intraclass correlation and the smallest detectable change. Our results revealed a somatotopy gradient reflected by APB MCR having the most lateral location. Reliability analysis showed that the commonly used metrics of MCRs, such as areas, volumes, centers of gravity (COGs), and hotspots had a high relative and low absolute reliability for all three muscles. For within-limb TMS somatotopy, the most common metrics such as the shifts between MCR COGs and hotspots had poor relative reliability. However, overlaps between different muscle MCRs were highly reliable. We, thus, provide novel evidence that inter-muscle MCR interaction can be reliably traced using MCR overlaps while shifts between the COGs and hotspots of different MCRs are not suitable for this purpose. In this paper, we focus on the airborne spread of disease and investigate the likelihood of transmission in school environments. It is crucial to understand the risk airborne infection from COVID-19 might pose to pupils, teachers, and their wider social groups. We use monitored CO2 data from 45 classrooms in 11 different schools from within the UK to estimate the likelihood of infection occurring within classrooms regularly attended by the same staff and pupils. We determine estimates of the number of secondary infections arising via the airborne route over pre/asymptomatic periods on a rolling basis. Results show that, assuming relatively quiet desk-based work, the number of secondary infections is likely to remain reassuringly below unity; however, it can vary widely between classrooms of the same school even when the same ventilation system is present. Crucially, the data highlight significant variation with the seasons with January being nearly twice as risky as July.   • Historic observations suggest that survivors of smallpox maintained lifelong immunity and protection to subsequent infection compared to vaccinated individuals. Although protective immunity by vaccination using a related virus (vaccinia virus (VACV) strains) was the key for smallpox eradication, it does not uniformly provide long term, or lifelong protective immunity (Heiner et al., 1971). To determine differences in humoral immune responses, **** were inoculated with VACV either systemically, using intranasal inoculation (IN), or locally by an intradermal (ID) route. We hypothesized that sub-lethal IN infections may mimic systemic or naturally occurring infection and lead to an immunodominance reaction, in contrast to localized ID immunization. The results demonstrated systemic immunization through an IN route led to enhanced adaptive immunity to VACV-expressed protein targets both in magnitude and in diversity when compared to an ID route using a VACV protein microarray. In addition, cytokine responses, assessed using a Luminex® mouse cytokine multiplex kit, following IN infection was greater than that stemming from ID infection. Overall, the results suggest that the route of immunization (or infection) influences antibody responses. The greater magnitude and diversity of response in systemic infection provides indirect evidence for anecdotal observations made during the smallpox era that survivors maintain lifelong protection. We studied the membrane interaction of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) nsP1 and show that both the CHIKV nsP1 protein and the amphipathic peptide specifically bind to negatively charged phospholipid vesicles. Using cryo-electron microscopy, we further show that nsP1 forms a contiguous coat on lipid vesicles and induces structural reorganization, while the amphipathic peptide alone failed to deform the membrane bilayer. This suggests that although amphipathic helix of nsP1 is required for initial membrane binding, the remaining cytoplasmic domain of nsP1 is involved in the subsequent membrane reorganization. HERV transcription has been detected in various cancers and diseases. However, the interaction between HERV expression and viral infection has not been fully elucidated. Here, we provided the first transcriptional profile of HERVs in dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV-2) infected A549 cells by using high-throughput RNA sequencing. The results showed that a number of HERVs and human genes were significantly differentially expressed in response to DENV-2 infection. Further bioinformatic analyses indicated a correlation between HERVs and human genes. In particular, the genes near the HERVs activated by dengue infection were dominantly enriched in the antiviral immune response. Taken together, our findings suggest that activated HERVs may be involved in the cellular immune response to viral infection by coexpressing with nearby host genes. The 2MG and 2MG3 tandemers had similar activity to GRFT against cell-free and cell-associated viruses, while 3MG and 4MG were significantly more potent. Herein, by analyzing a set of ORF2 truncated proteins expressed in Escherichia coli, we found that the highly conserved C-terminal cysteines play a crucial role in the oligomerization of the truncated ORF2 proteins and in their assembly into VLPs, through the formation of dimer-dimer disulfide bonds; and the treatment of native HEV particles with dithiothreitol (DTT) induced the disassembly of the viral capsid, suggesting that the disulfide bonding is required for stabilizing the native HEV capsid. Although protective immunity by vaccination using a related virus (vaccinia virus (VACV) strains) was the key for smallpox eradication, it does not uniformly provide long term, or lifelong protective immunity (Heiner et al., 1971). To determine differences in humoral immune responses, mice were inoculated with VACV either systemically, using intranasal inoculation (IN), or locally by an intradermal (ID) route. We hypothesized that sub-lethal IN infections may mimic systemic or naturally occurring infection and lead to an immunodominance reaction, in contrast to localized ID immunization. The results demonstrated systemic immunization through an IN route led to enhanced adaptive immunity to VACV-expressed protein targets both in magnitude and in diversity when compared to an ID route using a VACV protein microarray. In addition, cytokine responses, assessed using a Luminex® mouse cytokine multiplex kit, following IN infection was greater than that stemming from ID infection. Overall, the results suggest that the route of immunization (or infection) influences antibody responses. HERV transcription has been detected in various cancers and diseases. However, the interaction between HERV expression and viral infection has not been fully elucidated. Here, we provided the first transcriptional profile of HERVs in dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV-2) infected A549 cells by using high-throughput RNA sequencing. The results showed that a number of HERVs and human genes were significantly differentially expressed in response to DENV-2 infection. Further bioinformatic analyses indicated a correlation between HERVs and human genes. In particular, the genes near the HERVs activated by dengue infection were dominantly enriched in the antiviral immune response. Herein, by analyzing a set of ORF2 truncated proteins expressed in Escherichia coli, we found that the highly conserved C-terminal cysteines play a crucial role in the oligomerization of the truncated ORF2 proteins and in their assembly into VLPs, through the formation of dimer-dimer disulfide bonds; and the treatment of native HEV particles with dithiothreitol (DTT) induced the disassembly of the viral capsid, suggesting that the disulfide bonding is required for stabilizing the native HEV capsid. The present study sheds light on the structural role of the C-terminal region of the HEV capsid protein and contributes to the full understating of the viral capsid assembly process.

  • Mosses are a major component of Arctic vegetation today, with >500 species known to date. However, the origins of the Arctic moss flora are poorly documented in the fossil record, especially prior to the Pliocene. Here, we present the first anatomically preserved pre-Cenozoic Arctic moss and discuss how the unique biology of bryophytes has facilitated their success in polar environments over geologic time.

    A permineralized fossil moss gametophyte within a block of Late Cretaceous terrestrial limestone, collected along the Colville River on the North Slope of Alaska, was studied in serial sections prepared using the cellulose acetate peel technique.

    The moss gametophyte is branched and has leaves with a broad base, narrow blade, and excurrent costa. We describe this fossil as Cynodontium luthii sp. nov., an extinct species of a genus that is known from the High Arctic today. Cynodontium luthii is the oldest evidence of the family Rhabdoweisiaceae (by ≥18 Ma) and reveals that genera of haplolepideous mosses known in the extant Arctic flora also lived in high-latitude temperate deciduous forests during the Late Cretaceous.

We aimed to (a) quantify the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on accelerometer-assessed physical activity and sleep in people with type 2 diabetes and (b) identify predictors of physical activity during COVID-19 restrictions.

    Participants were from the UK Chronotype of Patients with type 2 diabetes and Effect on Glycaemic Control (CODEC) observational study. Participants wore an accelerometer on their wrist for 8days before and during COVID-19 restrictions. Accelerometer outcomes included the following overall physical activity, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), time spent inactive, days/week with ≥30-minute continuous MVPA and sleep. Predictors of change in physical activity taken pre-COVID included the following age, sex, ethnicity, body mass index (BMI), socio-economic status and medical history.

    In all, 165 participants (age (mean±S.D=64.2±8.3years, BMI=31.4±5.4kg/m

Fluorescence measurements revealed that more tryptophan on the protein surface decreased with increasing temperature, which indicated that exposure to tryptophan could increase the hydrophobicity of the protein gels. Whey proteins formed stronger, gummier, more elastic, and more cohesive gels at 70 ℃ under initial pH 9 conditions, which also increased with the addition of fructose.
    Mild non-immediate reactions (NIRs) to beta-lactams (BLs) are the most frequent manifestation of drug allergy in children. The diagnostic approach is complex as the utility of skin tests (STs) and lymphocyte transformation tests (LTTs) is controversial. Drug provocation test (DPT) is the gold standard, although no standardized protocols exist. We aimed to investigate the utility of DPT in a unique dose without previous STs, and LTTs in the diagnosis of NIRs to BLs in children.

    We prospectively evaluated children 0-14years old referred to the Regional University Hospital of Málaga during 2017-2020 reporting NIRs to BLs. We performed a DPT with a unique dose followed by regular treatment at home. If positive, STs and LTTs were done after the reaction had disappeared.

    We included 194 children, having 24 (12.4%) a positive DPT. The main culprit was AX (70.1%) followed by AX-clavulanic acid (CLV) (26.8%) and the main symptoms maculopapular exanthema (MPE) (49.5%) and delayed-urticaria (48.5%). A decrease (p=0.013) in the interval of days between drug administration and onset of symptoms was observed in positive DPT compared with the original reaction (3.5 vs 6days), with no differences in the overall percentage of MPE and delayed-appearing urticaria (p=0.551). No severe reactions occurred during DPT. Moreover, STs were positive in 13.33% and LTTs in 52.9%.

    Single-dose DPT without previous STs is a safe and useful way to assess NIRs to BLs in children. LTT has shown to be useful, confirming a T-cell mechanism involved in these reactions.

Therefore, we sought to investigate whether hostile attributions within clinical samples are better understood as a persistent characteristic or one that varies across contexts.

    Psychodermatology is an emerging subspeciality of dermatology. Psychodermatology clinics use a multidisciplinary approach to deal with psychological or psychiatric elements related to skin disease. Two previous studies in 2004 and 2012 highlighted the deficiency of psychodermatology services in the UK, despite the evidence that these services have high demand and are cost-effective.

    To reassess psychodermatology service provision in the UK and outline the developments that have been made.

    In conjunction with ****Radio 5 Live, a survey questionnaire was distributed via email to the UK membership of the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) and Psychodermatology UK. The survey consisted of 13 questions asking about the availability of psychodermatology services.

    Basic percentages were used to analyse quantitative data, and content analysis was used for qualitative data. Our results showed that less than a quarter of the respondents (24%) have access to a nearby dedicated psychodermatology service.or vulnerable individuals such as children and dermato-oncology patients.Azathioprine is an immunosuppressant drug used in many dermatological and nondermatological pathologies. The vector tick has also developed sophisticated molecular mechanisms to serve as a competent vector for pathogens, including the spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae. Evidence is still inadequate concerning tick-rickettsiae-host interactions and saliva-assisted transmission of the pathogen to the mammalian host. Rickettsia parkeri, of the SFG rickettsia, can cause a milder version of Rocky Mountain spotted fever known as American Boutonneuse fever. The Gulf Coast tick (Amblyomma maculatum) often transmits this pathogenic rickettsia in the USA. This review discusses the knowledge gap concerning tick-rickettsiae-host interactions by highlighting the SFG rickettsia and the Am maculatum model system. The recent sequencing of many algal genomes allows the detailed reconstruction of the sterol metabolic pathways. Here, we characterized sterol synthesis in two sequenced Chlorella spp., the free-living C. sorokiniana, and symbiotic C. variabilis NC64A. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was included as an internal control and Coccomyxa subellipsoidea as a plant-like outlier. The rats received periodontal disease induction, and after 7 days, the ligature was removed, and the animals were divided into groups/treatments NT-receive no treatment; SRP-submitted only to SRP; DOX-submitted to SRP and DOX irrigation; LIL-submitted to SRP and LIL irradiation; and DOX + LIL-submitted to SRP treatments, DOX irrigation and LIL irradiation. The animals were sacrificed at 7, 15 and 30 days, and then, the analyses were performed. Rickettsia parkeri, of the SFG rickettsia, can cause a milder version of Rocky Mountain spotted fever known as American Boutonneuse fever. The Gulf Coast tick (Amblyomma maculatum) often transmits this pathogenic rickettsia in the USA. This review discusses the knowledge gap concerning tick-rickettsiae-host interactions by highlighting the SFG rickettsia and the Am maculatum model system. Filling this knowledge gap will provide a better understanding of the tick-rickettsiae-host interactions in disease causation, which will be crucial for developing effective methods for preventing tick-borne diseases.Animals and fungi produce cholesterol and ergosterol, respectively, while plants produce the phytosterols stigmasterol, campesterol, and β-sitosterol in various combinations. The recent sequencing of many algal genomes allows the detailed reconstruction of the sterol metabolic pathways. Here, we characterized sterol synthesis in two sequenced Chlorella spp., the free-living C. sorokiniana, and symbiotic C. variabilis NC64A. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was included as an internal control and Coccomyxa subellipsoidea as a plant-like outlier. The presence of CAS1, CPI1, and HYD1 in the four algal genomes suggests the higher plant cycloartenol branch for sterol biosynthesis, confirming that algae and fungi use different pathways for ergosterol synthesis. Phylogenetic analysis for 40 oxidosqualene cyclases (OSCs) showed that the nine algal OSCs clustered with the cycloartenol cyclases, rather than the lanosterol cyclases, with the OSC for C. subellipsoidea positioned in between the higher plants and the eight other algae. With regard to why C. subellipsoidea produced phytosterols instead of ergosterol, we identified 22 differentially conserved positions where C. subellipsoidea CAS and A. thaliana CAS1 have one amino acid while the three ergosterol producing algae have another. Together, these results emphasize the position of the unicellular algae as an evolutionary transition point for sterols.This study evaluated the influence of Doxycycline (DOX) and Low-Intensity Laser (LIL) (InGaAlP diode laser) as scaling and root planing (SRP) adjuvants in the treatment of periodontitis induced in rats. The rats received periodontal disease induction, and after 7 days, the ligature was removed, and the animals were divided into groups/treatments NT-receive no treatment; SRP-submitted only to SRP; DOX-submitted to SRP and DOX irrigation; LIL-submitted to SRP and LIL irradiation; and DOX + LIL-submitted to SRP treatments, DOX irrigation and LIL irradiation. The animals were sacrificed at 7, 15 and 30 days, and then, the analyses were performed. A lower concentration of Alpha-glycoprotein acid and Complement 3 was observed in the DOX + LIL group compared to all the other groups in all the periods, and for Complement 4 at 15 and 30 days (P less then 0.01). A lower bone loss (BL) was observed in the DOX + LIL group compared to all the other groups in all the periods (P less then 0.01). It can be concluded that LIL was effective in the reduction of proteins, and its association with DOX was effective in the reduction of proteins and BL, in the treatment of periodontal induction in rats.

  • Potato consumption is highly prevalent around the world. Previous studies have reported a positive association of potato intake with hypertension and type 2 diabetes. However, data are scarce on potato consumption and risk of coronary artery disease (***).

We used a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire to assess consumption of baked, boiled, and mashed potatoes. The incidence of *** was assessed through electronic health record.     Nutritional metabolism is complex in pediatric patients with severe motor and intellectual disability (SMID), and therefore, appropriate estimation of the energy requirements is difficult. Focusing on ghrelin's role in energy metabolism regulation, we investigated plasma ghrelin levels in pediatric SMID patients and analyzed its nutritional significance as a regulatory marker of energy reserve.

    Fasting plasma total, acyl, and des-acyl ghrelin levels in 40 patients with SMID, including cerebral palsy (CP) (n=20) and muscular disease (MD) (n=8), and healthy controls (n=13) were investigated. The correlations of plasma ghrelin levels with anthropometry, blood nutritional markers, energy intake, and resting energy expenditure (REE) measured with indirect calorimetry were analyzed. A p value<0.05 was considered significant.

    SMID patients had significantly higher acyl ghrelin, and lower body mass index (BMI), z-scores of body weight (BW), body height and BMI, and albumin than controls. CP patients had signnversely reflected total body fat mass, resulting in strongly positive correlations with REE/BW. The measurement of plasma ghrelin may be useful to assess nutritional metabolism and energy reserve in pediatric SMID patients, such as CP and MD patients.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between overweight/obesity and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet score in a representative sample of Brazilian adolescents.

    Data from the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (ERICA), a national school-based survey, were used. A total of 71,553 adolescents (12-17 years old), of both sexes, participated in the study; they had their anthropometric measurements taken and responded to a 24-h dietary recall. Eight food components of the DASH score were evaluated. 1) fruits (except fruit juices), 2) vegetables (except potatoes and beans), 3) pulses/nuts, 4) whole grains, 5) low-fat and diet/light dairy products, 6) sodium, 7) red and processed meats, and 8) sugary drinks and fruit juices. A higher score was indicative of greater accordance with the DASH diet, with a final score ranging from eight to 40 points.
