Directly discharging low-concentration rare-earth wastewater not only wastes rare-earth resources but also pollutes the environment. In this study, the biosorption behavior of Serratia marcescens for Eu(III) was studied with emphasis on the optimization of adsorption conditions, adsorption kinetics, and adsorption isotherm. It was shown that the maximum adsorption capacity of Serratia marcescens reached 115.36 mg·g-1 under an optimal condition, indicating the good adsorption capability of Serratia marcescens for Eu(III). The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm analysis showed that the adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm, indicating that the adsorption of Eu(III) by Serratia marcescens is a monolayer chemical adsorption process. In addition, the adsorption mechanism was investigated by using characterizations of zeta potential, scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. It was revealed that the adsorption of Eu(III) by S. marcescens is a combination of electrostatic attraction, ions exchange and coordination. In this paper, a deep neural network combining long short-term memory (LSTM) layers and fully connected layers was proposed to predict the prevalence of bronchopneumonia in children in Chengdu based on environmental factors and previous prevalence rates. The objective was to explore the accumulation of TE in the various parts of vegetable crop plants (tomato, French bean, radish, potato, spinach, and leek) intercropped with phytostabilizing plant species (ryegrass and white clover, respectively). Field studies were conducted in a multicontaminated French urban wasteland with Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, and an alkaline soil pH. Analyses of the respective non-edible parts of monocultured vegetable crops showed accumulation of all TE, mostly Zn, then Pb and Cu, and finally Cd. The corresponding TE accumulation factors (soil to plant) were all below 0.25. In the edible parts, average concentrations for TE were above the limit values, according to European and Chinese standards. TE contents in the phytostabilizing species chosen were in the same orders of magnitude and the same ranking as described for vegetable crops and most accumulation was in the roots. Unexpectedly, the presence of the phytostabilizing plants had a very strong positive impact on the soil to plant accumulation factor. Moreover, the edible plant parts were poorly impacted by the co-cropping with phytostabilizing plants.The aim of this study was to access the Mn contamination in soil, forages, and animals. Heavy metal pollution is a matter of prime significance in natural environment. Through food chain, toxicity of heavy metals and their bioaccumulation potential are transferred into humans. Higher concentrations of metallic compounds are toxic to living organisms but these are essential to maintain body metabolism. Intake of food crops polluted with heavy metals is chief food chain channel for human exposure. Animals are exposed to heavy metal stress by the intake of richly contaminated food crops; those are chief part of food chain. Samples of soil, plant, animal blood, hair, and feces were collected to find contamination through wet digestion process in lab and metal analysis. Different forages were collected to study Mn content that was our major concern in this study. The present findings also emphasized on the assessment of bio-concentration factor (BCF). Other significant indices of mobility and pollution of metal were also calculated, i.e. pollution load index (PLI), daily intake of metal (DIM), health risk index (HRI), and enrichment factor (EF). The experimentation result showed different concentrations of metal in different seasons. The Mn concentration in forages was 20.01-28.29 mg/kg and in soil was 5.27-8.90 mg/kg. Soil samples showed higher level of (PLI) Pollution load index. Bio-concentration of MN was 2.59-4.21 mg/kg. It can be concluded that regular monitoring of the metal is essential to evaluate the contamination status. Mn contents were in the safe limits in soil and plants; however, its toxic level was observed in animals.

Pneumomediastinum/pneumothorax developed in 10.5% of subjects affected by SARS-coV2-ARDS. Dyspnea affected 40% and cough affected 37% of subjects. High resolution computed tomography of the chest showed bilateral diffuse ground glass opacities (GGO) in 100% of subjects. Traction bronchiolectasis, reticulation, crazy paving and distortion were observed in 64%. Furthermore, 36% showed subcutaneous emphysema. Non-severe ARDS cases received HFNC, and 76% patients recovered from pneumomediastinum/pneumothorax over a median follow up of 5 days. Among severe ARDS cases the recovery rate of pneumomediastinum/pneumothorax was 70% with the HFNC approach, and 10% with IMV.
HFNC is a safe and effective ventilatory approach for critical COVID-19 and has a positive role in associated complications such as pneumomediastinum and pneumothorax.

Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic, attempting to assess the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on diseases caused by complex immune mechanisms has become important. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the course of AD, including immunosuppressive therapy, in patients with a severe form of the disease. Materials and Methods A retrospective analysis of 21 adults aged 18 to 52 years with AD diagnosed with COVID-19, including patients requiring hospitalization, was performed. Results During SARS-CoV-2 infection, temporary exacerbation of skin lesions and/or skin pruritus was observed in nine (43%) patients but without the need for systemic treatment intervention. Patients with severe AD who received immunosuppressive therapy most often manifested mild exacerbation of skin symptoms. The skin condition improved in three patients. There was no significant effect of disease severity on the risk of severe COVID-19 (HR = 0.45; 95% CI 0.32-0.65). Conclusions The course of atopic dermatitis during SARS-CoV-2 infection may be different from the severity of its symptoms due to the lack of a significant influence. The immunosuppressive treatment used in patients with severe AD did not significantly affect the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection.In the last decade, the number of full-time registered dietitians (RDs) serving intercollegiate athletes in the United States has more than quadrupled. However, many student athletes may be at increased risk of nutrition-related problems that impact physical and academic performance, which include inadequate macronutrients, inadequate micronutrients, and excessive macronutrients. This narrative review reports the current literature to date on nutrition-related knowledge in collegiate athletes and the impact of sports RDs on student athletes' nutrition knowledge and behaviors. To date, only observational and quasi-experimental studies have been published with regard to changes in nutrition knowledge and behaviors in NCAA athletes. While these studies report benefits of the RD as a member of the interdisciplinary student athlete support team, more well-designed randomized control trials are warranted to determine benefits related to health outcomes and sport-specific performance outcomes.Individual factors like gender and familiarity can affect the kind of environmental representation that a person acquires during spatial navigation. Men seem to prefer relying on map-like survey representations, while women prefer using sequential route representations. Moreover, a good familiarity with the environment allows more complete environmental representations. This study was aimed at investigating gender differences in two different object-position learning tasks (i.e., Almeria Boxes Tasks) assuming a route or a survey perspective also considering the role of environmental familiarity. Two groups of participants had to learn the position of boxes placed in a virtual room. Participants had several trials, so that familiarity with the environment could increase. In both tasks, the effects of gender and familiarity were found, and only in the route perspective did an interaction effect emerge. This suggests that gender differences can be found regardless of the perspective taken, with men outperforming women in navigational tasks. However, in the route task, gender differences appeared only at the initial phase of learning, when the environment was unexplored, and disappeared when familiarity with the environment increased. This is consistent with studies showing that familiarity can mitigate gender differences in spatial tasks, especially in more complex ones.Syringa vulgaris L. The chemical profile of the ethanolic extracts was investigated using chromatographic (HPLC-DAD-ESI+, GC-MS) and spectral (UV-Vis, FT-IR) methods, while the protective effect against free radicals was evaluated in vitro by different chemical assays (DPPH, FRAP, CUPRAC). The cytotoxic activity was tested on two tumoral cell lines, HeLa, B16F10, using the MTT assay. Significant amounts of free or glycosylated chemical components belonging to various therapeutically important structural classes, such as phenyl-propanoids (syringin, acteoside, echinacoside), flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol derivatives) and secoiridoids (secologanoside, oleuropein, 10-hydroxy oleuropein, demethyloleuropein, syringalactone A, nuzhenide, lingstroside) were obtained for the flowers, leaves and bark extracts, respectively. Furthermore, MTT tests pointed out a significant cytotoxic potential expressed in a non-dose-dependent manner toward the tumoral lines. The performed methods underlined that S. vulgaris extracts, in particular belonging to flowers and leaves, represent valuable sources of compounds with antioxidant and antitumoral potential.

The high environmental risk for exposure to azithromycin, clarithromycin, and sulfamethoxazole to both cyanobacteria and eukaryotic species in effluents and/or receiving water was noted. Following the obtained results, we suggest extending the watch list of the Water Framework Directive for Union-wide monitoring with sulfamethoxazole.Multiple studies have shown that psychological distress in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) patients is associated with worse quality of life and poor treatment adherence. This may influence chemotherapy response and prognosis. Moreover, although stress hormones can reduce cisplatin efficacy in EOC treatment, their effect on the integrity of DNA remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated whether norepinephrine and epinephrine can induce DNA damage and modulate cisplatin-induced DNA damage in three EOC cell lines. Our data show that norepinephrine and epinephrine exposure led to increased nuclear γ-H2AX foci formation in EOC cells, a marker of double-strand DNA breaks. We further characterized norepinephrine-induced DNA damage by subjecting EOC cells to alkaline and neutral comet assays. Norepinephrine exposure caused DNA double-strand breaks, but not single-strand breaks. Interestingly, pre-treatment with propranolol abrogated norepinephrine-induced DNA damage indicating that its effects may be mediated by β-adrenergic receptors. Lastly, we determined the effects of norepinephrine on cisplatin-induced DNA damage. Our data suggest that norepinephrine reduced cisplatin-induced DNA damage in EOC cells and that this effect may be mediated independently of β-adrenergic receptors. Taken together, these results suggest that stress hormones can affect DNA integrity and modulate cisplatin resistance in EOC cells.Cutaneous stem cells, gained great attention in the field of regenerative medicine as a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of skin and hair disorders and various types of skin cancers. The topical route with high patient compliance and several other benefits is gaining increasing importance in basic and applied research. However, the major obstacle for topical drug delivery is the effective barrier provided by skin against penetration of the vast majority of exogenous molecules. The research in this field is focusing more and more on new strategies to circumvent and pass this barrier effectively. In this article the existing approaches are discussed considering physical and chemical methods along with utilization of novel drug delivery systems to enhance penetration of drugs to the skin. In particular, attention has been paid to studies finalized to the delivery of molecules to cutaneous stem cells with the aim of transferring signals, modulating their metabolic program, inducing physiological modifications and stem cell gene therapy.University food environments typically offer an abundance of unhealthy foods, including through vending machines. This review evaluated the effectiveness of nutrition interventions in vending machines in the university setting. Ten databases were searched for experimental studies published up to July 2019, evaluating nutrition interventions that aimed to encourage the purchase or consumption of healthier foods and drinks in vending machines in the university setting. In total, 401 articles were identified, and 13 studies were included. Studies were pre-post test (n = 7, 54%), randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (n = 5, 38%), and non-randomized controlled trial (n = 1, 8%). Most studies were from the USA (n = 10, 77%) and were published between 2014 and 2018 (n = 9, 69%). Eight interventions (62%) reported positive change in outcomes, including increased number/proportion of sales or revenue from healthier items (n = 6), improved adherence to guidelines for the ratio of healthy/unhealthy products available (n = 1), and improved consumer perception of items available (n = 1). The high environmental risk for exposure to azithromycin, clarithromycin, and sulfamethoxazole to both cyanobacteria and eukaryotic species in effluents and/or receiving water was noted. This may influence chemotherapy response and prognosis. Moreover, although stress hormones can reduce cisplatin efficacy in EOC treatment, their effect on the integrity of DNA remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated whether norepinephrine and epinephrine can induce DNA damage and modulate cisplatin-induced DNA damage in three EOC cell lines. Our data show that norepinephrine and epinephrine exposure led to increased nuclear γ-H2AX foci formation in EOC cells, a marker of double-strand DNA breaks. We further characterized norepinephrine-induced DNA damage by subjecting EOC cells to alkaline and neutral comet assays. Norepinephrine exposure caused DNA double-strand breaks, but not single-strand breaks. Interestingly, pre-treatment with propranolol abrogated norepinephrine-induced DNA damage indicating that its effects may be mediated by β-adrenergic receptors. Lastly, we determined the effects of norepinephrine on cisplatin-induced DNA damage. Our data suggest that norepinephrine reduced cisplatin-induced DNA damage in EOC cells and that this effect may be mediated independently of β-adrenergic receptors. This review evaluated the effectiveness of nutrition interventions in vending machines in the university setting. Ten databases were searched for experimental studies published up to July 2019, evaluating nutrition interventions that aimed to encourage the purchase or consumption of healthier foods and drinks in vending machines in the university setting. In total, 401 articles were identified, and 13 studies were included. Studies were pre-post test (n = 7, 54%), randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (n = 5, 38%), and non-randomized controlled trial (n = 1, 8%). Most studies were from the USA (n = 10, 77%) and were published between 2014 and 2018 (n = 9, 69%). Eight interventions (62%) reported positive change in outcomes, including increased number/proportion of sales or revenue from healthier items (n = 6), improved adherence to guidelines for the ratio of healthy/unhealthy products available (n = 1), and improved consumer perception of items available (n = 1). During the last decade, the fields of advanced and personalized therapeutics have been constantly evolving, utilizing novel techniques such as gene editing and RNA therapeutic approaches. However, the method of delivery and tissue specificity remain the main hurdles of these approaches. Exosomes are natural carriers of functional small RNAs and proteins, representing an area of increasing interest in the field of drug delivery. It has been demonstrated that the exosome cargo, especially miRNAs, is at least partially responsible for the therapeutic effects of exosomes. Exosomes deliver their luminal content to the recipient cells and can be used as vesicles for the therapeutic delivery of RNAs and proteins. Synthetic therapeutic drugs can also be encapsulated into exosomes as they have a hydrophilic core, which makes them suitable to carry water-soluble drugs. In addition, engineered exosomes can display a variety of surface molecules, such as peptides, to target specific cells in tissues. The exosome properties present an added advantage to the targeted delivery of therapeutics, leading to increased efficacy and minimizing the adverse side effects. Furthermore, exosomes are natural nanoparticles found in all cell types and as a result, they do not elicit an immune response when administered. Exosomes have also demonstrated decreased long-term accumulation in tissues and organs and thus carry a low risk of systemic toxicity. This review aims to discuss all the advances in exosome therapies in ophthalmology and to give insight into the challenges that would need to be overcome before exosome therapies can be translated into clinical practice.

The Japanese difficulty scoring system (DSS) was developed to assess the difficulty of laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (LDP). The study aimed to validate a modified DSS (mDSS) in a European high-volume center.
Patients' clinical data underwent LDP for benign and malignant pancreatic lesion between September 2013 and February 2020 were reviewed. Expert laparoscopic surgeons performed the procedures. The mDSS consisted of seven variables, such as type of operation, malignancy, neoadjuvant therapy, pancreatic resection line, tumor close to major vessels, tumor extension to peripancreatic tissue, and left-sided portal hypertension and/or splenomegaly. According to the difficulty level and previous score, the mDSS was subdivided into three classes low, intermediate, and high. Surrogates of case complexity (operative time, intraoperative blood loss and blood transfusion requirements, conversion rate) were used to validate the new scoring system.
The study population included 140 LDP. Ninety-five (68%), 35 (25%) and 10 (7%) patients belonged to low, intermediate, and high difficulty groups. The mDSS identified the complexity of the surgical case of the series for all the surrogates of complexity considered, namely conversion rate (P=.004), operative time (P=.033) and intraoperative blood loss (P=.009). No differences were recorded in the postoperative outcomes (P>.05).
The mDSS for LDP better stratified the pancreatic procedures according to their complexity. The new scoring system may allow an appropriate preoperative evaluation of surgical difficulty, facilitating LDP's training program. Future prospective studies are needed to validate the mDSS.

The current study aimed to examine alterations in linoleic acid (LA)-derived lipid metabolites in the plasma of individuals who are heavy drinkers and to evaluate associations between these molecules and markers of liver injury and systemic inflammation. Analysis of plasma LA-derived metabolites was performed on 66 individuals who were heavy drinkers and 29 socially drinking but otherwise healthy volunteers. Based on plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, 15 patients had no liver injury (ALT ≤ 40 U/L), 33 patients had mild nguish individuals with mAH from those with mild ALD.**** of the current data on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are derived from biopsy-based studies that may introduce ascertainment and selection bias. Selection of patients for liver biopsy has implications for clinical practice and the reported epidemiology of NAFLD. The aim of this study was to determine patient factors predictive of histologic versus empiric clinical diagnosis of NAFLD in real-world practice. Adults from TARGET-NASH were included in this study. Descriptive statistics are provided for the cohort and compare the characteristics of histologic NAFLD versus patients with clinically diagnosed NAFLD, followed by logistic regression and machine-learning models to describe predictors of liver biopsy. The records of 3,474 subjects were analyzed; median age was 59 years, 59% were female, 75% were White, and median body mass index was 32 kg/m2. Using histologic and/or clinical criteria, a diagnosis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis was made in 37%, and cirrhosis in 33%. Comorbid conditions included cardiovascular disease (19%), mental health diagnoses (49%), and osteoarthritis (10%). Predictors of a biopsy diagnosis included White race, female sex, diabetes, and elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT). ALT increased the odds of liver biopsy by 14% per 10-point rise. Machine-learning analyses showed non-White patients with ALT less then 69 had only a 0.06 probability of undergoing liver biopsy. ALT was the dominant variable that determined liver biopsy. Conclusions In this real-world cohort of patients with NAFLD, two-thirds of patients did not have a liver biopsy. The hourly DI was estimated based on air temperature and relative humidity data obtained from the next-generation global reanalysis from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and in-house high-resolution regional reanalysis generated using an assimilative Weather Research Forecast (WRF) model. The DI exceeds 28°C, that is, the threshold for human discomfort, in all summer months (June to September) over most parts of the KSA due to a combination of consistently high temperatures and relative humidity. The DI is greater than 28°C for 8-16 h over the western parts of KSA and north of the central Red Sea. A DI of >28°C persistes for 7-9 h over the Red Sea and western KSA for 90% of summer days. The spatial extent and number of days with DI > 30°C, that is, the threshold for severe human discomfort, are significantly lower than those with DI > 28°C.

Analysis of plasma LA-derived metabolites was performed on 66 individuals who were heavy drinkers and 29 socially drinking but otherwise healthy volunteers. Based on plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, 15 patients had no liver injury (ALT ≤ 40 U/L), 33 patients had mild nguish individuals with mAH from those with mild ALD.Much of the current data on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are derived from biopsy-based studies that may introduce ascertainment and selection bias. Selection of patients for liver biopsy has implications for clinical practice and the reported epidemiology of NAFLD. The aim of this study was to determine patient factors predictive of histologic versus empiric clinical diagnosis of NAFLD in real-world practice. Adults from TARGET-NASH were included in this study. Descriptive statistics are provided for the cohort and compare the characteristics of histologic NAFLD versus patients with clinically diagnosed NAFLD, followed by logistic regression and machine-learning models to describe predictors of liver biopsy. The records of 3,474 subjects were analyzed; median age was 59 years, 59% were female, 75% were White, and median body mass index was 32 kg/m2. Using histologic and/or clinical criteria, a diagnosis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis was made in 37%, and cirrhosis in 33%. Comorbid conditions included cardiovascular disease (19%), mental health diagnoses (49%), and osteoarthritis (10%). Predictors of a biopsy diagnosis included White race, female sex, diabetes, and elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT). ALT increased the odds of liver biopsy by 14% per 10-point rise. Machine-learning analyses showed non-White patients with ALT less then 69 had only a 0.06 probability of undergoing liver biopsy. ALT was the dominant variable that determined liver biopsy. Conclusions In this real-world cohort of patients with NAFLD, two-thirds of patients did not have a liver biopsy. These patients were more likely to be non-White, older, with a normal ALT, showing potential gaps in or knowledge about this population.Frailty has emerged as a powerful predictor of clinical outcomes (e.g., decompensation, hospitalization, mortality) in patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD). This article aims to provide a practical overview of the recent advances in the clinical, radiological, and remote assessment tools of the frail patient with ESLD. Historically, clinicians have incorporated an assessment of frailty using the "end-of-the-bed test" or "eyeball test" into their clinical decision making. The DI exceeds 28°C, that is, the threshold for human discomfort, in all summer months (June to September) over most parts of the KSA due to a combination of consistently high temperatures and relative humidity. The DI is greater than 28°C for 8-16 h over the western parts of KSA and north of the central Red Sea. A DI of >28°C persistes for 7-9 h over the Red Sea and western KSA for 90% of summer days. The present study aimed to examine prospectively the occurrence of hypercalciuria and changes in bone metabolite markers in pediatric patients during immobilization.
In total, 13 children with an orthopedic disease requiring immobilization longer than two weeks were enrolled. Blood samples were collected after breakfast. Urine samples were collected at the second voiding after waking. The urine Ca/Cr ratio and various bone metabolite parameters were measured before, and every one to four weeks after, the start of immobilization.
The median patient age was 7 years with a range of 2 to 13 years. Orthopedic diseases in the patients were dislocated hip joint (N=7), slipped capital femoral epiphysis (N=2), etc. The urine Ca/Cr ratio increased significantly within a week after immobilization (p<0.01) and continued to increase for two more weeks. Once immobilization ended, the urine Ca/Cr ratio fell gradually and returned to the normal range about six weeks after mobility was achieved (p<0.01). Serum ALP and bone-specific ALP significantly decreased after immobilization began (p<0.01). After immobilization ended, the serum ALP returned to pre-immobilization levels in two to four weeks (p<0.01). Serum NTX did not change significantly during immobilization.

Comparing to PPT (IC50 = 234.90 ± 20.7 nM), eight derivatives had better performance in inhabiting proliferation of PC-3M cells, six of them belong to ****amino acid ester derivatives, and the derivative named V-05 (IC50 = 1.28 ± 0.1 nM) had the strongest inhibitation effect. Changes in cell proliferation and apoptotic signaling pathways were studied by DAPI staining, colony formation assay, migration assay, flow cytometry and western blot analysis. We found that V-05 were able to inhibit PC-3M cells proliferation and migration, and induced apoptosis by downregualting p-PI3K, p-Akt and Bcl-2, and upregulating Cleaved caspase-3 and Bax. Studies of multiple species have found that adverse early life experiences, including childhood trauma and maternal separation, can result in accelerated telomere shortening. The objective of this study was to determine if premature separation from the mother affected telomere length in domestic kittens (
). Subjects were 42 orphaned kittens and 10 mother-reared kittens from local animal rescue groups and shelters. DNA was extracted from whole blood collected from kittens at approximately 1 week and 2 months of age. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) were analyzed to examine the expression and prognostic value of TYMS and BCL2L1 in colorectal cancer. C-BioPortal analysis was used to detect the TYMS and BCL2L1 alterations. Through The Human Protein Atlas (THPA), the TYMS and BCL2L1 protein levels were also assessed. The protein protein interaction (PPI) network was built using GeneMANIA analysis, while co-expression genes correlated with TYMS and BCL2L1 were identified using LinkedOmics analysis. Finally, we collected clinical samples to verify the expressions of TYMS and BCL2L1 in colorectal cancer.
TYMS and BCL2L1 were up-regulated, and TYMS and BCL2L1 genomic alterations were not associated with the occurrence of colorectal cancer. TYMS and BCL2L1 were significantly connected with the prognosis of colorectal cancer patients. The genes interacted with TYMS and BCL2L1 were linked to functional networks involving pathway of apoptosis, apoptosis-multiple species, colorectal cancer, platinum drug resistance and p53 signaling pathway. qRT-PCR verification results of TYMS were consistent with the result of TCGA and GEO analysis.

In the current paper, the result of an alignment of the primary introduction pathways of all alien plants in Europe included in the EASIN catalogue is presented, based on the CBD framework. In total, 6,250 alien plant taxa (marine plants excluded), both alien to Europe (native range outside Europe) and alien in Europe (native range partially in Europe) are reported. Altogether 5,175 plant taxa had their primary introduction pathway aligned based on the CBD framework, while for the rest the pathway remains unknown. In addition, the taxonomy, year and country of its first record in the wild are provided for each taxon. Our analyses reveal that the main primary introduction pathways of alien plants into Europe are linked to accidental escapes from ornamental and horticultural activities. Northwestern European countries seem to act as the main gateway areas of alien plants into Europe. In total, 6,250 alien plant taxa (marine plants excluded), both alien to Europe (native range outside Europe) and alien in Europe (native range partially in Europe) are reported. Altogether 5,175 plant taxa had their primary introduction pathway aligned based on the CBD framework, while for the rest the pathway remains unknown. In addition, the taxonomy, year and country of its first record in the wild are provided for each taxon. Our analyses reveal that the main primary introduction pathways of alien plants into Europe are linked to accidental escapes from ornamental and horticultural activities. Northwestern European countries seem to act as the main gateway areas of alien plants into Europe. Simulations of coiling in four patient-specific aneurysms agreed well with the patient angiograms. To test the influence of coil pre-shape on P3, we performed hemodynamic simulations in aneurysms with coils deployed by P3 using the generic pre-shape, P3 using a coil-specific pre-shape, and full finite-element-method simulation. We found that the generic pre-shape was sufficient to produce results comparable to virtual coiling by finite element modeling. Based on these findings, P3 can rapidly simulate coiling in patient-specific aneurysms with good accuracy and is thus a potential candidate for clinical treatment planning.Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) has been established as an approved druggable target for the treatment of patients with diverse gynecological tumors such as ovarian, cervical and breast cancers. In this study, we demonstrate that the H3 peptide can be converted from nonbinder to a moderate binder of HER2 by just adding an orthogonal noncovalent interaction system (X⋯O┄H) between a halogen bond (X⋯O) and a hydrogen bond (H┄O) involving peptide Phe358 residue and HER2 Val948/Trp951 residues. High-level calculations are utilized to rigorously characterize and rationally design the X⋯O┄H system, which is then optimized with different halogen atoms and at different substituting positions. It is revealed that there is a synergistic effect between the X⋯O and H┄O of the orthogonal interaction system; formation of the halogen bond can enhance the interaction strength of the hydrogen bond. In silico analysis and in vitro assay reach a consistence that Br-substitution at the m-position of peptide Phe358 phenyl moiety is the best choice that can render strong interaction for the X⋯O┄H system, which also makes the peptide 'bindable' to HER2 kinase domain, while F/Cl/I-substitution at the same position can only improve the peptide affinity moderately or modestly. Qualitative semi-structured interviews analysed with thematic analysis.
Twenty-three pregnant women in Malang City, Indonesia were interviewed between December 2018 and January 2019.
Four key themes emerged concerning pregnant women's nutrition information-seeking behaviour (i) Most women passively received nutrition information rather than actively seeking it; (ii) Women sought and received nutrition information from multiple sources including health professionals, social networks and the Internet, with varying levels of trust; (iii) Health professionals, including doctors, midwives and nutritionists, did not provide consistent and timely information; and (iv) Most women could identify gaps between nutrition information provided by health professionals and their expectations.

Alcohol use among survivors of head and neck cancer (HNC) negatively impacts patient outcomes and is an important risk factor for recurrent and second primary tumors. Despite recommendations from several cancer societies, alcohol consumption remains a common problem in this population.
A cross-sectional study was performed with the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) Self-Report questionnaire. Patients with HNC completed surveys at pre-treatment and follow-up appointments every 3-6months for at least 2-years after treatment.
796 surveys were available for analysis. Most participants were male (75.7%) and had either oropharyngeal (34.5%) or laryngeal (16.7%) cancer. The percentage of alcohol drinkers decreased from 56.1% at pre-treatment to 40.4% at 0-3months post-treatment, but then increased and surpassed baseline levels by 24+months post-treatment (64.4%, p=0.0079). Concurrently, moderate drinkers (AUDIT=1 - 3) decreased from 34.2% at pre-treatment to 25.2% at 0-3months post-treatment, but then increased and surpassed baseline levels at 24+months post-treatment (39.

Essential oils (EOs) from Citrus are the main by-product of Citrus-processing industries. In addition to food/beverage and cosmetic applications, citrus EOs could also potentially be used as an alternative to antibiotics in food-producing animals. A commercial citrus EO-Brazilian Orange Terpenes (BOT)-was fractionated by vacuum fractional distillation to separate BOT into various fractions F1, F2, F3, and F4. Next, the chemical composition and biological activities of BOT and its fractions were characterized. Results showed the three first fractions had a high relative amount of limonene (≥10.86), even higher than the whole BOT. Conversely, F4 presented a larger relative amount of BOT's minor compounds (carvone, cis-carveol, trans-carveol, cis-p-Mentha-2,8-dien-1-ol, and trans-p-Mentha-2,8-dien-1-ol) and a very low relative amount of limonene (0.08-0.13). Antibacterial activity results showed F4 was the only fraction exhibiting this activity, which was selective and higher activity on a pathogenic bacterium (E. coli) than on a beneficial bacterium (Lactobacillus sp.). However, F4 activity was lower than BOT. Similarly, F4 displayed the highest antioxidant activity among fractions (equivalent to BOT). These results indicated that probably those minor compounds that detected in F4 would be more involved in conferring the biological activities for this fraction and consequently for the whole BOT, instead of the major compound, limonene, playing this role exclusively.The aim was to explore how midwives, public health nurses and nurses view caring in antenatal care (ANC) as provided for mothers and fathers/partners. Based on Noblit and Hare (1988), meta-ethnography was used to address meaning by synthesizing knowledge and understanding inductively through selected qualitative studies (n = 16). Four core themes were identified (1) supporting the parents to awaken to parenthood and creating a firm foundation for early parenting and their new life situation; (2) guiding parents on the path to parenthood and new responsibility; (3) ensuring normality and the bond between baby and parents while protecting life; and (4) promoting the health and wellbeing of the family today and in the future. The overarching theme can be expressed as "helping the woman and her partner prepare for their new life with the child by providing individualized, shared care, firmly grounded and with a view of the future". Caring in antenatal care (ANC) is being totally present, listening and using multidimensional professional competence but also being open-minded to new aspects and knowledge. The health promotion and positive health aspects should be considered an important part of supporting parents and the whole family now and in the future. A more conscious salutogenic approach to ANC would lead to more favorable results and could be a fruitful research topic in the future. There is a need to provide midwives/nurses with enough time to allow them to concentrate on specific needs and support for different kind of families in ANC but also training for midwives to make them more familiar with online and other options.In this study, two strains of the yeast P. pastoris were constructed, one of which produced authentic recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (ryGM-CSF), and the other was a chimera consisting of ryGM-CSF genetically fused with mature human apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-I) (ryGM-CSF-ApoA-I). In this work, a kind of liquid-infused anisotropic microgrooved slippery surface (LIAMSS) was fabricated through one-step femtosecond laser irradiation and lubricant coating technology. On the inclined LIAMSS, the underwater bubbles show great directional motion and anisotropic spreading ability under the effect of buoyancy. It should be noted that the interaction between the air and the lubricant layer plays a dominant role in determining the attachment and the movement of the underwater bubble, which could be ascribed to the competition between the adhesion resistance induced by contact angle hysteresis and the drive force induced by buoyancy. Additionally, the bubble shows obvious anisotropy on the LIAMSS with the increase in volume because of the restriction of the slippery area, and the bubble contact angle perpendicular to the grooved region is about 88â—‹ when the bubble volume is 5 μL. We believe that the present findings would accelerate the application of this kind of bubble slippery surface in underwater gas collection and tail gas treatment.

BACKGROUND The distal radius is an optional site for evaluation of bone quality in postmenopausal women before cementless total hip arthroplasty. We hypothesized that dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and pulse-echo ultrasonometry of the distal radius may help discriminate subjects at high risk of femoral stem subsidence. METHODS A prospective cohort of postmenopausal women with primary hip osteoarthritis underwent total hip arthroplasty with implantation of a parallel-sided femoral stem. Postoperative stem migration was measured using radiostereometric analysis. Preoperatively, subjects had multisite DXA measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) and pulse-echo ultrasonometry of the cortical-bone thickness. The diagnostic abilities of these methods to discriminate less then 2 mm and ≥2 mm femoral stem subsidence were tested. RESULTS The accuracy of the distal radius BMD and cortical-bone thickness of the distal radius were moderate (area under the curve, 0.737 and 0.726, respectively) in discriminating between less then 2 mm and ≥2 mm stem subsidence. Women with low cortical-bone thickness of the radius were more likely (odds ratio = 6.7; P = .002) to develop stem subsidence ≥2 mm. These subjects had lower total hip BMD (P = .007) and reduced thickness of the medial cortex of the proximal femur (P = .048) with lower middle (P less then .001) and distal (P = .004) stem-to-canal fill ratios. CONCLUSION Femoral stem stability and resistance to subsidence are sensitive to adequate bone stock and unaltered anatomy. DXA and pulse-echo ultrasonometry of the distal radius may help discriminate postmenopausal women at high risk of stem subsidence. Therefore our study aimed to (1) define the optimal protocol for identifying patients with mobile hips and stiff lumbar spines and (2) determine clinical and standing radiographic parameters predicting these patients. METHODS A cohort of 113 patients with end-stage hip osteoarthritis awaiting THA was prospectively studied. Clinical data, patient-reported outcome measures, and spinopelvic radiographs were assessed with the patient in the standing, "relaxed-seated," and "deep-flexed seated" position. A "hip user index" was calculated quantifying the percentage of sagittal hip movement compared to overall movement between the standing and deep-flexed seated position. RESULTS Radiographs in the relaxed-seated position had an accuracy of 56% (95% confidence interval 46-65) to detect patients with stiff lumbar spines, compared to a detected rate of 100% in the deep-flexed seated position. A standing pelvic tilt of ≥19° was the only predictor for being a hip user with a sensitivity of 90% and specificity of 71% (area under the curve 0.83). Patients with a standing pelvic tilt ≥19° and an unbalanced spine with a flatback deformity had a 30× fold relative risk (95% confidence interval 4-226, P less then .001) of being a hip user. CONCLUSION Patients awaiting THA and having combined high hip and reduced lumbar spine mobility can be screened for with lateral standing radiographs of the spinopelvic complex. Hip user verification should be done utilizing radiographs in the deep-flexed seated position due to a higher accuracy compared to relaxed-seated radiographs. CASE REPORT An 81-year-old female patient presented to the Emergency Department with history of a fall. She had a known case of hypertension and was recently started on hydrochlorothiazide. When evaluated at the hospital, her sodium level was measured as 106 mmol/L and her clinical symptoms were unremarkable. She was simultaneously diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, for which she was treated with intravenous ciprofloxacin. A few hours after administration, her sodium level fell even further, and she quickly developed symptoms of hyponatremia. After discontinuation of ciprofloxacin and treatment with hypertonic saline (3% NS), she improved and made a full recovery. WHY SHOULD AN EMERGENCY PHYSICIAN BE AWARE OF THIS? BACKGROUND The distal radius is an optional site for evaluation of bone quality in postmenopausal women before cementless total hip arthroplasty. We hypothesized that dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and pulse-echo ultrasonometry of the distal radius may help discriminate subjects at high risk of femoral stem subsidence. METHODS A prospective cohort of postmenopausal women with primary hip osteoarthritis underwent total hip arthroplasty with implantation of a parallel-sided femoral stem. Postoperative stem migration was measured using radiostereometric analysis. Preoperatively, subjects had multisite DXA measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) and pulse-echo ultrasonometry of the cortical-bone thickness. The diagnostic abilities of these methods to discriminate less then 2 mm and ≥2 mm femoral stem subsidence were tested. RESULTS The accuracy of the distal radius BMD and cortical-bone thickness of the distal radius were moderate (area under the curve, 0.737 and 0.726, respectively) in discriminating between less then 2 mm and ≥2 mm stem subsidence. Women with low cortical-bone thickness of the radius were more likely (odds ratio = 6.7; P = .002) to develop stem subsidence ≥2 mm. These subjects had lower total hip BMD (P = .007) and reduced thickness of the medial cortex of the proximal femur (P = .048) with lower middle (P less then .001) and distal (P = .004) stem-to-canal fill ratios. CONCLUSION Femoral stem stability and resistance to subsidence are sensitive to adequate bone stock and unaltered anatomy. DXA and pulse-echo ultrasonometry of the distal radius may help discriminate postmenopausal women at high risk of stem subsidence. The recent identifications of a subset of proinflammatory neutrophils, low-density granulocytes, and their ability to readily form neutrophil extracellular traps led to a resurgence of interest in neutrophil dysregulation in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This article presents an overview on how neutrophil dysregulation modulates the innate and adaptive immune responses in SLE and their putative roles in disease pathogenesis. The therapeutic potential of targeting this pathogenic process in the treatment of SLE is also discussed.Skewing of type I interferon (IFN) production and responses is a hallmark of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Genetic and environmental contributions to IFN production lead to aberrant innate and adaptive immune activation even before clinical development of disease. Basic and translational research in this arena continues to identify contributions of IFNs to disease pathogenesis, and several promising therapeutic options for targeting of type I IFNs and their signaling pathways are in development for treatment of SLE patients.Professor Eugene Braunwald, often referred to as the 'Father of Modern Cardiology', has contributed significantly to medicine and cardiology. He is best known for the acclaimed textbook Braunwald's Heart Disease and for being the founding chairman of the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) Study Group. Our primary aim is to highlight his experiences and the guidance that he has to offer to future generations of medical trainees and professionals. An interview with Prof. Braunwald provided the authors with an insight into his journey in medicine. A range of questions were posed pertaining to his struggles and accomplishments in cardiology, his perspectives on the future of cardiology and research, as well as his advice to current and future medical professionals.1 Positive role models are an inspiration to all, regardless of the stage in their career. With hard work, unwavering dedication and a strong desire to make a positive difference to patients and the field, the opportunities are endless. Whether it is clinical or bench research, advances in clinical cardiology and research usually go hand-in-hand. Although primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease remain of critical importance, it is now time to focus on primordial prevention to step **** and reduce the development of the risk factors for the future development of cardiovascular disease in the first place. There have been significant advances in cardiology over the past two-thirds of the century during which Prof. Braunwald trained and then led the field. However, there is still **** work to be done. Mentors and medical institutions alike must work towards a common goal of 'igniting the fire' within the new generation of clinicians and investigators who will then propel this important specialty to ever greater heights.The term work-life balance may cause physicians to feel inadequate in pursuing a reality in which work and life each have equal importance. Furthermore, the term implies competition between these 2 realms. Instead, work-life integration is a more constructive and realistic term. Achieving harmonious integration requires self-reflection on the current state, goals, and resources and strategies needed to achieve and maintain such a state. Prioritizing aspects of both, and aligning them with individual requirements, while incorporating consistent and intentional investment of time and efforts in both professional and personal arenas is crucial to cultivate and sustain longitudinal well-being.Women lag in leadership roles in many fields, but in academic medicine, and particularly in Otolaryngology, women are even further behind. Understanding personal and cultural biases, changing institutional and systemic practices that perpetuate the challenges, and developing and supporting individual skills will all be necessary to improve the representation of women leaders in academic medicine.Adverse health behaviors are potent drivers of chronic disease and premature mortality. This has led to the development of various lifestyle scores to predict clinical risk, but their complexity makes them impractical for use in clinical settings. Thus, there is a need to develop a brief lifestyle score that can assess factors such as exercise and diet within the constraints of routine medical practice. Accordingly, we assessed 19,081 patients undergoing coronary artery calcium (CAC) scanning between September 1, 1998 and December 30, 2016. Each patient completed a questionnaire that included a two-item lifestyle scale regarding patients' frequency of exercise and adherence to a low saturated fat diet. Patients' responses were used to generate a lifestyle score which ranged from very low risk to high risk. Patients were followed for a median of 11.0 years for all-cause mortality.
