    Systematic review of articles was performed using three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane) published until May 2019. After applying the selection criteria, five articles were included in the systematic review, with a total of 141 patients. Meta-analysis showed the absence of significant difference between intervention and control groups in the preoperative period (standardized mean difference = -0.28; confidence interval, CI 95% = -0.81, 0.26;
    = 0.31) and postoperative period (standardized mean difference = -0.12; 95% CI = -0.65, 0.42;
    = 0.66). In general, the heterogeneity of statistical estimates was low (

    The longevity of restorative materials depends on the resistance to masticatory forces. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the mechanical and microleakage properties of Cention-N with glass ionomer cement (GIC) and composite restorative materials.

    A total of 45 specimen blocks were prepared with 15 samples of each type of restorative material, namely Cention-N, GIC, and hybrid composite. Samples were subjected to load at crosshead speed of 0.75 ± 0.25 mm/min till the fracture of sample. Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surface of orthodontically extracted premolars followed by restoration of each test material. All the surfaces of the tooth were coated with clear nail varnish except 1 mm around the margins of the restorations. These samples were immersed in 0.5% basic fuchsine dye and longitudinally sectioned and observed under stereomicroscope to check microleakage. The obtained data were statistically evaluated.

    An appropriate traction of the target lesion is a key for a safe and secure ESD procedure. We proposed the flexible traction method (F-trac) which provided an optimal traction using an endoscopic hand-suturing (EHS) and investigated the usefulness of this technique for gastric ESD in-vivo porcine model.

    In the F-trac method, a lesion was suspended by pulling proximal side of endoscope which was connected to the contralateral side with a barbed suture using the EHS technique just before starting the submucosal dissection. A single endoscopist performed conventional ESD (C-ESD) and F-trac ESD alternately for a total of ten simulating lesions of 3cm in diameter in a live porcine stomach. The pig was rotated so that each lesion was positioned in the direction of the gravity. The procedure time, technical accuracy, adverse events, and the number of additional injection to the submucosal layer during dissection were evaluated.

    The total ESD procedure time in the F-trac group was significantly shorter than in C-ESD group (19.0min vs. 30.6min, p = 0.039). There were no significant differences between both groups in muscular layer damage, sample damage, perforation, and intraoperative bleeding. The number of additional injection in the F-trac group was significantly fewer than that in C-ESD group (0 times vs. 4.4 times, p = 0.027).

    The purpose of this study was to analyze non-dysplastic Barrett's esophagus (NDBE) biopsy tissue and compare the rate of somatic DNA copy number alterations (CNAs) in patients who subsequently progressed to high-grade dysplasia (HGD) or esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) to those patients who did not.

    A retrospectively collected database of Barrett's esophagus (BE) patients spanning a 16-year period was queried. Patients who progressed from NDBE to HGD or EAC were identified and compared to patients who did not. Initial biopsy specimens were microdissected and extracted DNA underwent Multiplex Ligation-dependent Probe Amplification (MLPA) for CNAs. Comparisons between progressors and non-progressors were made with Fisher's exact and two-sample t tests. Logistic regression assessed factors associated with progression.

    Of the 2459 patients in the BE database, 36 patients progressed from NDBE to either HGD or EAC. There were eight progressors who had biopsy specimens with adequate DNA for analysis. The progreression was associated with the presence of any CNA and specific CNAs in GATA6 or ERBB2.

The aim of this study was to compare two commonly utilized laparoscopic linear gastrointestinal staplers (Ethicon, Medtronic) with a novel linear stapler (Titan) designed to perform a sleeve gastrectomy with a single stapler firing.

    Excised gastric remnants from laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy were utilized and tissue thickness was measured from fundus to antrum. An optimized experimental staple line was then created. The greater curve remnant was insufflated to determine the staple line burst pressure and location. The doubly stapled (clinical and experimental) gastric specimen underwent staple analysis for junctional location, malformation, and height.

    The Titan stapler withstood a significantly higher burst pressure than both Ethicon and Medtronic linear cutting staplers. While the Medtronic and Ethicon staplers had a similar percentage of staples in junctions, the Titan stapler has no junctions. In considering the formation of all staples outside of junctions, the Medtronic and Titan staplers had no difference in percentage of malformed staples, while the Ethicon stapler had a significantly higher percentage. Additionally, there were no differences in mismatch between staple height and tissue thickness between experimental groups.

Aim of this article is to analyse anatomical and other factors that are important in selection of the appropriate surgical technique in treatment of benign parotid tumors. Furthermore, to discuss the risk of complications and recurrent disease according to selected operation. Finally, to define patient selection criteria to facilitate decision making in parotid surgery and become a guide for younger surgeons.

  • Despite decades of speculation, many causal aspects that contribute to the heterogeneity of alexithymia still must be clarified. In the multivariate analysis, highly alexithymic individuals appeared to report subjective deficits in emotion recognition and regulation as well as increased impulsivity; however, their empathy skills were intact, and even the proneness to experiencing empathic distress with others' suffering was increased among alexithymic individuals. We also compared the clinical and behavioral manifestations of highly alexithymic male and female subjects to those of each gender control group. As a result, in contrast to their subjective self-reports of emotion processing impairment, the RMET performance appeared to be preserved in alexithymic females; however, highly alexithymic males showed actual deficits in the emotion identification task. Future research needs to further refine the constructs of alexithymia to incorporate the phenotypic changes in affected individuals in relation to measuring instruments, the extent of empathic distress, and gender.
    Stroke has been shown to cause cardiac autonomic dysfunction. Depression is common complication after acute ischemic stroke (AIS). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether decreased heart rate variability (HRV) was related to poststroke depression (PSD) in patients with mild-moderate AIS.

    In this study, we assessed autonomic function of ischemic stroke patients within 72h from symptom onset by fractal dimension (FD). 503 patients (mean age 65.93 ± 10.19) with mild-moderate AIS underwent FD test after admission. Depressive symptoms were assessed using 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) at baseline (within 7 days) and 3 months. Depression were defined if HDRS >6 points. According to the data of FD, we investigated association with early-onset PSD status and 3-month PSD.

    59.24% (293/503) of patients had early-onset PSD status at baseline, and 38.66% (184/476) of patients had PSD at 3 months. ROC curve analysis shown that the optimal cut point of FD for early-onset PSD status and 3-month PSD were FD ≤ 1.27 and FD ≤ 1.19, respectively. In fully adjusted models, higher NIHSS [adjusted odd ratios (OR), 1.15; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.05-1.27; P=0.005], younger age (adjusted OR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.01-1.13; P=0.046), and FD ≤ 1.27 (adjusted OR, 3.31; 95% CI, 2.23-4.92; P<0.001) were associated with increased risk of early-onset PSD status. Here, we present a case of a 48-year-old male with a known history of deep venous thrombosis and a known mutation in factor V Leiden combined with mild protein S deficiency, who presented with a painful swelling in the left leg. Moreover, the patient had a history of diabetes, dyslipidemia and obesity. Prothrombin time and platelet count were within the normal range. The international normalized ratio and activated partial thromboplastin time were 3.21 and 36.7 s, respectively. The Doppler study showed a thrombus in the saphenous vein, and complementary genetic screening investigations revealed heterozygous mutation for prothrombin (G20210A). A diagnosis of multifactorial genetic thrombophilia was established. The patient was treated with warfarin, which resulted in significant improvement in the follow-ups, and at the time of reporting this case, there were no clinical or biological signs of thrombosis. A CHMF can be differentiated from a singleton partial molar pregnancy with similar ultrasound appearance by amniocentesis and karyotyping of the live fetus, which is a normal diploid. After adequate counseling, both women refused prenatal karyotyping and underwent the termination of pregnancy. The method of termination needs to be carefully decided. Surgical evacuation maybe difficult due to the well-formed fetus in the second trimester, and uterotonic agents can be associated with the risk of trophoblastic embolization and GTN. Termination with misoprostol followed by ultrasound-guided suction evacuation was successfully done in both cases. Histopathology and karyotyping confirmed the diagnosis of CHMF in the first and partial mole in the second case. βHCG normalized within 7 weeks postevacuation in both, with no increased risk of trophoblastic embolization or GTN. More studies are needed on the methods of termination in such pregnancies. Medical termination with misoprostol appears to be a viable option, though the optimal dosage is yet to be defined.

    The aim of this study was to assess the histologic reliability of tissues taken from embalmed cadavers in an anatomy laboratory.

    A total of 112 tissue samples were obtained using standard autopsy techniques from various organs (heart, lung, thyroid, skeletal muscle, bone and skin) of 11 cadavers available at the anatomy laboratory of Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, Dammam, Saudi Arabia, in 2019. Samples were prepared using the standard paraffin procedure followed by cutting sections at 4-μm thickness and staining with standard hematoxylin and eosin stain. Using predefined criteria, the quality of the samples was evaluated by two board-certified histopathologists and each slide was categorized as good, satisfactory or poor.

By a modified capture hybridization (CHART) analysis of the protein targets, we uncovered interactions of Morrbid lncRNA with the SFPQ (splicing factor proline and glutamine rich)-NONO (non-POU domain-containing octamer-binding protein) splicing complex. Existing models either homogenize the entire structure, use computationally expensive finite difference time domain (FDTD) methods, or do not consider the shape of the bounded beam, which is used to test such structures. This paper proposes a modeling technique based on combining the Multi-Gaussian beam model with the recursive stiffness matrix method to simulate the FMC signals for layered anisotropic media. The cells were first transformed by pETDuet-1/ αAmy recombinant plasmid, then the competent cells carrying this plasmid were prepared for the transformation of pETDuet-1/ βAmy plasmid. Enzymatic activities of bacterial colonies were detected on LB agar staining with iodide. Both enzymes were more produced by IPTG induction in BL21 cells and were purified using Ni-NTA agarose column. SDS-PAGE and western blot analyses showed that the molecular weight of purified α and β amylase to be approximately 60 kDa and 55kDa, respectively.

The mechanisms behind its skeletal effects and optimum intake for maintaining bone health remain poorly defined. To elucidate these two issues, we investigated the association between circulating vitamin K
    (phylloquinone) concentrations with fracture risk, bone mineral density (BMD), hip geometry and plasma dephospho-uncarboxylated-Matrix Gla Protein (dp-ucMGP), an extra-hepatic vitamin K dependent protein (VKDP), in post-menopausal osteoporosis (PMO).

    We studied 374 women aged (mean [SD]) 68.7[12.3] years with PMO. Information including demographics, lifestyle habits and previous fractures was captured through a questionnaire. Serum was analysed for vitamin K
    . BMD at the lumbar spine (LS), total hip (TH) and femoral neck (FN) (n=277) and hip structural analysis (HSA) parameters (n=263) were derived from DXA scans. VKDPs including undercarboxylated prothrombin (PIVKA-II) and dp-ucMGP were measured in a sub-gro measures of bone quality.
    Our data suggest that the positive effect of vitamin K on fracture risk may be related to its effects on bone strength. Higher concentrations of serum vitamin K1 may be required for vitamin K's skeletal effects compared to coagulation. Further prospective or interventional studies are needed for confirmation and should include measures of bone quality.

    This study evaluates temporal changes and modifiers of FGF23 concentrations from 12 to 24months, in healthy children, participating in a randomized vitamin D intervention (VIDI). Participants received vitamin D
    of 10 or 30μg/day from age 2weeks to 24months. At 12 and 24months, growth measurements and venous blood samples were obtained for analyses of intact (iFGF23) and C-terminal FGF23 (cFGF23), 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD), calcium, phosphate, parathyroid hormone, iron and ferritin. Changes in FGF23 and modifying factors were examined by linear mixed models.

    The study included 594 infants. Girls had higher iFGF23 than boys (p<0.001 for both 12 and 24months), cFGF23 did not differ between the sexes.     Noise is one of the most common harmful agents in the workplace. Exposure to excessive noise can lead to complications such as cardiovascular disorders, disturbance of body hormones' rhythm and hearing loss. This study aimed at weighing and modelling factors influencing serum cortisol and melatonin concentrations of workers that are exposed to various sound pressure levels using neural network algorithm.

    A case-control design was adopted in the current research. The required data were collected from 75 industrial and mining firm staff members. They were assigned to three groups with equal sample sizes (25 workers). In developing the conceptual model in regard to variables that may affect workers' serum cortisol and melatonin concentration, SPL, age, weight, and height were included. The influence of SPL on serum cortisol concentration as assessed in the three shifts. Moreover, radioimmunoassay (RIA) was utilized to assess serum cortisol and melatonin concentrations. Neural network algorithm was subsequentp from the beginning to the middle of the shift and then declined to the end of the shift. Considering the accuracy rates of the models developed to predict hormones, neural network algorithm is a suitable and powerful tool for weighing and modelling factors influencing serum cortisol and melatonin concentrations.Psychotria microphylla is a plant found in Africa and many parts of the world where the leaves are locally used in folk medicine for the treatment of toxicity related liver diseases. We investigated the antioxidant potentials of ethanol leaf extract of Psychotria microphylla (ELE-PM) in restoring hepatic redox dysregulations in rats exposed to heavy metals. HPLC was used in quantifying the bioactive compounds in ELE-PM. DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2 picrylhydrazyl), FRAP (Ferric reducing antioxidant power) and NO (Nitric Oxide) assays were used for in vitro studies. The in vivo studies involved 30 rats randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 6). Group 1 received normal saline (2 mg/kg), group 2, 3, 4 and 5 received a combined solution of Pb(NO3)2 (11.25 mg/kg) and HgCl2 (0.4 mg/kg) respectively. After 7 days of heavy metal exposure, groups 3, 4 and 5 received a daily bolus administration of 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg body weight of EE-PM respectively through oral intubation for 28 days.   • Public involvement in research is an established part of the research process in the UK, however there remain questions about what good public involvement in research looks and feels like. Until now public involvement practitioners, researchers and members of the public have looked for answers in examples shared across networks, published case studies, guidance and research articles. Pulling these strands together, the UK Standards for Public Involvement provides six statements (standards) about public involvement in research. They were produced by a partnership of organisations from Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England with contributions from involvement practitioners, public partners, researchers and research funders.

    Each standard has reflective questions, which are designed to encourage standard users to use approaches and behaviours that improve involvement, over time. The standards are designed to be used as a practical tool, and reflect the agreed hallmarks of good public involvement in re with concluding comments from those that tested and helped improve the standards.
    This commentary paper describes, in some detail, a process to develop a set of six standards for public involvement in research in the UK. Producing a complex, national public involvement initiative is not without its challenges, and in supplementary material partnership members reflect on and share their experiences of standards development. The next phase of integration and implementation is explored with concluding comments from those that tested and helped improve the standards.
    Addressing adolescent pregnancies associated health burden demands new ways of organizing maternal and child mental health services to meet multiple needs of this group. There is a need to strengthen integration of sustainable evidence-based mental health interventions in primary health care settings for pregnant adolescents. The proposed study is guided by implementation science frameworks with key objective of implementing a pilot trial testing a full IPT-G version along with IPT-G mini version under the mhGAP/IPT-G service framework and to study feasibility of the integrated mhGAP/IPT-G adolescent peripartum depression care delivery model and estimate if a low cost and compressed version of IPT-G intervention would result in similar size of effect on mental health and family functioning as the Full IPT-G.     Acquired brain injury (ABI) affects approximately 79.3 million individuals annually and is linked with elevated rates of depression and low mood. Existing methods for treating depression in ABI have shown mixed efficacy. Behavioural activation (BA) is a potentially promising intervention. Its premise is that individuals with low mood avoid planning and engaging in activities due to low expectations of a positive outcome. Consequently, their exposure to positive reinforcement is reduced, exacerbating low mood. BA aims to break this cycle by encouraging activity planning and engagement. It is unknown whether cognitive demands of traditional BA may undermine efficacy in ABI. Here, we assess the feasibility and acceptability of two groups designed to increase activity engagement. In the activity planning group (traditional BA), the importance of meaningful and positive activity will be discussed and participants encouraged to plan/engage in activities in everyday life. The activity engagement group (experientia the Health Research Authority of the NHS in the UK (East of England-Cambridge Central, REF 18/EE/0305). Results will inform future research on interventions for mood in ABI and be disseminated broadly via peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations and social media.

    This paper describes a pilot non-randomised controlled study of a highly tailored 56-day textmessaging and smartphone app prototype intervention to increase adherence to anti-hypertensive medication in primary care. The aim of this study was to evaluate the acceptability of the intervention and obtain patients' views about the intervention content, the delivery mode, and the mechanisms by which the intervention supported medication adherence.

    Patients diagnosed with hypertension were invited and recruitedto the study via general practice text messages and attended aface to face meeting with a member ofthe researcher team. Participants were asked to test the textmessaging intervention for 28 consecutive days and switch to the smartphone app for 28 more days. Participants completed baseline and follow-up questionnaires and took part in semi-structured telephone interviews. Digital log files captured patients' engagement with the intervention.     The life expectancy for people with sickle cell disease (SCD) has improved tremendously over the last 50 years. This population experiences hemolysis and vaso-occlusion in multiple organs that lead to complications such as cardiopulmonary disease, strokes, and avascular necrosis. These complications can limit mobility and aerobic endurance, similar to limitations that often occur in geriatric populations. These sickle-cell and age-related events lead to frequent hospitalization, which further increases the risk of functional decline. We have few tools to measure functional decline in people with SCD. The purpose of this paper is to describe a protocol to evaluate the feasibility of sickle cell disease geriatric assessment (SCD-GA).

    We will enroll 40 adults with SCD (20 age 18-49.99 years and 20 age ≥ 50 years) in a prospective cohort study to assess the feasibility of SCD-GA. The SCD-GA includes validated measures from the oncology geriatric assessment enriched with additional physical and cognitive measures.
