  • The frequency of bacteremia in children hospitalized due to respiratory syncytial virus infection (RSV) rarely exceeds 1%, but a recent study reported a 10% risk of bacteremia. In this study, we set out to verify the frequency, usefulness, and costs of blood cultures in RSV infections. We addressed the issue by reviewing medical files of 512 children, aged 8 days-121 months, who were hospitalized during January 2010 and June 2017. The RSV-related diagnoses included bronchiolitis (390 patients), RSV pneumonia (65 patients), and bronchitis (57 patients). There were 212 blood cultures performed in 185 patients (36%). In 10 cultures (5.4%), the following pathogens were identified Staphylococcus haemolyticus, 4; Staphylococcus epidermidis, 1; Staphylococcus hominis, 1; Corynebacterium, 1 Streptococcus parasanguinis, 1; Rothia mucilaginosa, 1; Micrococcus luteus, 1; and Streptococcus hominis, 1 case. However, all of these pathogens were identified as a contamination of samples only. Therefore, both positive blood cultures turned out in fact negative, and the patients having either result of blood culturing showed no clinically relevant differences. The total cost of blood cultures in the pediatric ward amounted to €1980. If performed in each and every patient, the costs would have reached €5490. In conclusion, the frank frequency of bacteremia in children with RSV infection, with no sepsis, seems exceedingly low, which confirms the earlier findings. Thus, blood culturing, generating high costs, is of negligible clinical value. The study provides no evidence supporting a routine blood culture in case of children hospitalized due to RSV infection.This article reviews the epidemiological situation in Poland during the 2017-2018 influenza season in the context of viral spread from the neighboring countries. It was found that virus type B predominated in 13 out of the 16 Polish provinces, type A predominated in just 1 province, and both types predominated equally in another 2 provinces. Data on influenza type B virus did not enable the drawing of a clear-cut conclusion on the way of its spread. This technique is important because of its remarkable ability to perfectly mimic the natural extracellular matrix (ECM). ECM-based scaffolds/hydrogels provide structural support for cell differentiation and maturation. Therefore, novel natural-based bioinks, ECM-based hydrogels, and particulate forms of the ECM provide promising strategies for whole organ regeneration. Despite its efficacious characteristics, removal of residual detergent and the presence of various protocols make this technique challenging for scientists and regenerative medicine-related programs. This chapter reviews the most effective physical, chemical, and enzymatic protocols used to remove the cellular components and their challenges. We discuss the applications of decellularized ECM (dECM) in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine with an emphasis on hard tissues.New nanomedicine formulations and novel applications of nanomedicinal drugs are reported on an almost daily basis. While academic progress and societal promise continue to shoot for the stars, industrial acceptance and clinical translation are being looked at increasingly critically. We here discuss five key challenges that need to be considered when aiming to promote the clinical translation of nanomedicines. We take the perspective of the end-stage users and consequently address the developmental path in a top-down manner. We start off by addressing central and more general issues related to practical and clinical feasibility, followed by more specific preclinical, clinical, and pharmaceutical aspects that nanomedicinal product development entails. We believe that being more aware of the end user's perspective already early on in the nanomedicine development path will help to better oversee the efforts and investments needed, and to take optimally informed decisions with regard to market opportunities, target disease indication, clinical trial design, therapeutic endpoints, preclinical models, and formulation specifications. Critical reflections on and careful route planning in nanomedicine translation will help to promote the success of nanomedicinal drugs. Graphical abstract.Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a viral disease of the brain associated with immunodeficiency, immune suppressing medications, and malignancy. In the absence of effective anti-viral therapy for the causative JC virus, immune restoration has emerged as the critical therapeutic alternative. The evolving treatment of PML (and other rare JC virus-associated neurologic syndromes) requires consideration of baseline immune functioning and comorbid diseases while selecting from a number of therapeutic options to restore an effective immune response. This review focuses on the current options for management of PML in typical situations where this disease presents, including several where immune restoration is a standard therapeutic approach such as in PML associated with HIV/AIDS and in multiple sclerosis associated with natalizumab. Other circumstances in which PML occurs including associated with primary immunodeficiencies, malignancies, and transplants present greater challenges to immune reconstitution, but emerging concepts may enhance therapeutic options for these situations.

    Acellular dermal matrix (ADM) allografts are commonly used in the surgical treatment of complex and irreparable rotator cuff tears. Multiple studies report that superior capsule reconstruction (SCR) using ADM has resulted in short-term clinical success as assessed via radiographic and patient-reported outcomes. However, limited information is available regarding the biologic fate of these grafts in human subjects. This case series describes histologic results from 8 patients who had reoperations, during which the previously implanted ADMs were removed. These explanted ADMs were subjected to histologic analysis with the hypothesis that they would have evidence of recellularization, revascularization, and active remodeling.

    Eight patients, 38-82 years old, underwent reoperation 6-38 months after undergoing SCR. ADM explants were voluntarily shipped to the manufacturer for histologic analysis. Each graft's structure and composition were qualitatively evaluated by 1 or more of the following histologic stains incorporation of ADMs used in SCR.
    The present histologic analysis suggests that ADMs used in SCR undergo active recellularization, revascularization, and remodeling as early as 6 months after implantation, and that graft recellularization positively correlates with duration of implantation. These results represent a significant advancement in our knowledge regarding biologic incorporation of ADMs used in SCR.
    The purpose of this study was to evaluate how patients treated with reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) achieve internal rotation (IR) using video assessment and to compare this to patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs).

    We reviewed 215 preoperative and 657 postoperative videos (3-78 months) for 215 patients who underwent primary RSA, performing IR using the modified vertebral level method. Their functional motion pattern was then grouped into 3 types type I, could not reach behind their ****; type II, able to reach to at least waist level, with assistance; and type III, able to reach to a minimum of waist level in an uninterrupted fashion. Patients completed functional questions (put on a coat, wash ****, tuck in a shirt, and manage toileting) and a diagram of perceived IR. Patients' functional motion types were compared to PROM answers. Pre- and postoperative scores were also compared to assess the effect of surgery on patients' perception of IR function.

    Patients undergoing RSA will achieve IR in 3 distinct motion patterns. Analysis of self-reported IR indicated statistically significant difference between the 3 functional types of IR (P < .001). Patient-perceived IR was not significantly different between the 3 studied IR functional types (P = .076) in the analysis of preoperative measures but was significantly different in the postoperative setting (P < .001).

    Anemia has been demonstrated as a modifiable risk factor for postoperative complications following various types of primary and revision total joint arthroplasties. However, at present, we are not aware of any studies assessing postoperative complications following total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) in patients with varying severity of anemia. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of preoperative anemia severity on 30-day postoperative complications following primary TSA.

    Adult patients undergoing primary TSA from 2012 to 2018 were identified in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. Patients undergoing TSA were substratified into 3 cohorts nonanemia (hematocrit >36% for women, >39% for men), mild anemia (hematocrit 33%-36% for women, 33%-39% for men), and moderate to severe anemia (hematocrit <33% for both women and men), based on World Health Organization definitions of anemia. In this analysis, 30-day wound, cardiac, pulmonary, renal, and thromboembolic croximately 2-fold increase in the odds of postoperative complications for patients undergoing primary TSA. Patients with moderate to severe anemia should be medically optimized before they undergo TSA.

    Shoulder osteoarthritis can be divided into different glenoid types (A, B, C, and D) and subtypes. The aim of this study was to investigate if there is an association between the prearthropathy scapular anatomy, shoulder osteoarthritis, and different glenoid types and subtypes.

  • A 5-year-old boy presented with intermittent fever for 1 month, painful neck swelling associated with dysphagia, hoarseness of voice for 3 weeks and dyspnoea of 1-day duration. On evaluation, he had elevated serum thyroglobulin levels and inflammatory markers. There was a diffuse glandular thyroid enlargement with hypoechoic areas on neck ultrasonography. Fine-needle aspiration cytology was suggestive of subacute thyroiditis (SAT), and MRI of the neck confirmed narrowing of the trachea by the enlarged thyroid. He received steroids to relieve airway compression. Levothyroxine was started. On follow-up, he was symptom-free and euthyroid; steroids and levothyroxine were discontinued. SAT presenting with compression of trachea is rare in children. This highlights the need for identifying the type of thyroiditis to determine treatment modality.A 14-year-old boy, a known case of perinatal hypoxic cerebral palsy, presented to paediatric emergency with acute melaena and blood staining around feeding gastrostomy site. Physical examination revealed pallor, but no signs of distress with an unremarkable abdominal examination. Routine blood tests revealed normochromic. Abdominal ultrasound scan and Meckel's scan were unremarkable. The patient underwent examination under anaesthesia of the perianal area and joint upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. Streak-like gastritis with no signs of active bleeding lesions were noted and patchy areas of colitis involving the descending and sigmoid colon and the rectum. Spontaneous compartment syndrome in patients with GYG1 gene mutation does not appear to have been previously recognised. Although a direct causality cannot be confidently drawn, this gene is involved in muscle energy utilisation and is known to cause metabolic defect. Acute compartment syndrome, once diagnosed, warrants emergency surgical decompression.     A 5-year-old boy presented with intermittent fever for 1 month, painful neck swelling associated with dysphagia, hoarseness of voice for 3 weeks and dyspnoea of 1-day duration. On evaluation, he had elevated serum thyroglobulin levels and inflammatory markers. There was a diffuse glandular thyroid enlargement with hypoechoic areas on neck ultrasonography. Fine-needle aspiration cytology was suggestive of subacute thyroiditis (SAT), and MRI of the neck confirmed narrowing of the trachea by the enlarged thyroid. He received steroids to relieve airway compression. Levothyroxine was started. On follow-up, he was symptom-free and euthyroid; steroids and levothyroxine were discontinued. SAT presenting with compression of trachea is rare in children. This highlights the need for identifying the type of thyroiditis to determine treatment modality.A 14-year-old boy, a known case of perinatal hypoxic cerebral palsy, presented to paediatric emergency with acute melaena and blood staining around feeding gastrostomy site. Physical examination revealed pallor, but no signs of distress with an unremarkable abdominal examination. Routine blood tests revealed normochromic.   • Cancer is one of the most prevalent diseases in theworld. Tumors arise due to important genes changing their activity, e.g., when inhibited or over-expressed. But these gene perturbations are difficult to observe directly. Molecular profiles of tumors can provide indirect evidence of gene perturbations. However, inferring perturbation profiles from molecular alterations is challenging due to error-prone molecular measurements and incomplete coverage of all possible molecular causes of gene perturbations.

    We have developed a novel mathematical method to analyze cancer driver genes and their patient-specific perturbation profiles. We combine genetic aberrations with gene expression data in a causal network derived across patients to infer unobserved perturbations. We show that our method can predict perturbations in simulations, CRISPR perturbation screens, and breast cancer samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas.

    Cerebral malaria (CM) pathogenesis remains incompletely understood. Having shown low systemic levels of tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), an enzymatic cofactor for neurotransmitter synthesis, we hypothesized that BH4 and BH4-dependent neurotransmitters would likewise be low in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in CM.

    We prospectively enrolled Tanzanian children with CM and children with nonmalaria central nervous system conditions (NMCs). We measured CSF levels of BH4, neopterin, and BH4-dependent neurotransmitter metabolites, 3-O-methyldopa, homovanillic acid, and 5-hydroxyindoleacetate, and we derived age-adjusted z-scores using published reference ranges.

    Cerebrospinal fluid BH4 was elevated in CM (n = 49) compared with NMC (n = 51) (z-score 0.75 vs -0.08; P < .001). Neopterin was increased in CM (z-score 4.05 vs 0.09; P < .001), and a cutoff at the upper limit of normal (60 nmol/L) was 100% sensitive for CM. Neurotransmitter metabolite levels were overall preserved. A higher CSF BH4/BH2 ratio was associated with increased odds of survival (odds ratio, 2.94; 95% confidence interval, 1.03-8.33; P = .043).

    Despite low systemic BH4, CSF BH4 was elevated and associated with increased odds of survival in CM. Coma in malaria is not explained by deficiency of BH4-dependent neurotransmitters. Elevated CSF neopterin was 100% sensitive for CM diagnosis and warrants further assessment of its clinical utility for ruling out CM in malaria-endemic areas.

Regularized approaches are classically used to perform variable selection in high-dimensional linear models. However, these methods can fail in highly correlated settings.

    We propose a novel variable selection approach called WLasso, taking these correlations into account. It consists in rewriting the initial high-dimensional linear model to remove the correlation between the biomarkers (predictors) and in applying the generalized Lasso criterion. The performance of WLasso is assessed using synthetic data in several scenarios and compared with recent alternative approaches. The results show that when the biomarkers are highly correlated, WLasso outperforms the other approaches in sparse high-dimensional frameworks. The method is also illustrated on publicly available gene expression data in breast cancer.

    Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have attracted worldwide attention due to their carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic effects, environmental persistence, and bioaccumulation characteristics. Therefore, the sensitive, reliable, and rapid detection of PAHs in sediment is of great importance.

    To develop a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence and ultraviolet detection after Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe (QuEChERS) treatment for simultaneous determination of 16 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency priority PAHs in sediment samples.

    The samples were ultrasonically extracted with acetone and then the supernatant was purified with a modified QuEChERS method. After centrifugation, the supernatant was injected into the HPLC system for analysis. The separation was accomplished on a ZORBAX Eclipse PAH column (150 × 4.6 mm, 3.5 μm) and the column temperature was set at 30 °C. The flow rate of the mobile phase consisting of water and acetonitrile in gradient eluAHs in sediment samples and the proposed method has been successfully applied to the analysis PAHs in real sediment samples.

The sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP) is well known for its role in cryptococcal adaptation to hypoxia through its regulation of ergosterol and lipid biosynthesis. The regulation of metabolic reprogramming under hypoxia, however, is largely unknown. While the portal has been visualized in mature capsids, we aimed to elucidate its role in the assembly and maturation of procapsids using cryo-electron tomography (cryoET). We identified the portal vertex in individual procapsids, calculated a subtomogram average, and compared that with the portal vertex in empty mature capsids (A-capsids). The resulting maps show the portal on the interior surface with its narrower end facing outwards, while maintaining close contact with the capsid shell. In the procapsid, the portal is embedded in the underlying scaffold, suggesting that assembly involves a portal-scaffold complex. During maturation, the capsid shell angularizes with a corresponding outward movement of the vertices. We found that in A-capsids, the portal translocates outward further inside one vertex interacting with the scaffold protein in the procapsid. On maturation, the scaffold is cleaved and dissociates, the capsid angularizes, and the portal moves outward, interacting closely with the capsid shell. Here, we present the crystal structure of the ChiS DBD at a resolution of 1.28 Å. We find that the ChiS DBD contains an HTH domain that is structurally similar to those found in other DNA-binding proteins, like the LacI repressor. While the portal has been visualized in mature capsids, we aimed to elucidate its role in the assembly and maturation of procapsids using cryo-electron tomography (cryoET). We identified the portal vertex in individual procapsids, calculated a subtomogram average, and compared that with the portal vertex in empty mature capsids (A-capsids). The resulting maps show the portal on the interior surface with its narrower end facing outwards, while maintaining close contact with the capsid shell. In the procapsid, the portal is embedded in the underlying scaffold, suggesting that assembly involves a portal-scaffold complex. During maturation, the capsid shell angularizes with a corresponding outward movement of the vertices. We found that in A-capsids, the portal translocates outward further inside one vertex interacting with the scaffold protein in the procapsid. On maturation, the scaffold is cleaved and dissociates, the capsid angularizes, and the portal moves outward, interacting closely with the capsid shell. Here, we present the crystal structure of the ChiS DBD at a resolution of 1.28 Å. We find that the ChiS DBD contains an HTH domain that is structurally similar to those found in other DNA-binding proteins, like the LacI repressor. Under UV light irradiation, EPFRs were generated very quickly and reached the maximum value in 4 d, which was related to the photocatalytic property of the particle. However, these EPFRs dissipated quickly in 14 d. On the contrary, the intensities of EPFRs generated in dark were 2 times higher, and stabled for over 2 months. Therefore, the environmental impacts of EPFRs in dark may be widespread and long-lasting, which should be monitored more carefully. It should be noted that for CuO-coated silica, a significant amount of EPFRs (20% of the maximum) survived the UV-light irradiation and stabled during the experimental period (45 d).   • Previous genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have established several susceptibility genes for venous thromboembolism (VTE) and suggested many others. However, a large proportion of the genetic variance in VTE remains unexplained. Here, we report genome-wide single- and multimarker as well as gene-level associations with VTE in 964 cases and 899 healthy controls of European ancestry. We report 19 loci at the genome-wide level of association (p ≤ 5 × 10-8). Our results add to the strong support for the association of genetic variants in F5, NME7, ABO, and FGA with VTE, and identify several loci that have not been previously associated with VTE. Altogether, our novel findings suggest that 20 susceptibility genes for VTE were newly discovered by our study.     We recently developed a double-balloon device, using widely available existing technology, to facilitate endoscopic ultrasound-guided gastroenterostomy (EUS-GE). Our aim is to assess the feasibility of this modified approach to EUS-guided double-balloon-occluded gastroenterostomy bypass (M-EPASS).

    This was a single-center retrospective study of consecutive patients undergoing M-EPASS from January 2019 to August 2020. The double-balloon device consists of two vascular balloons that optimize the distension of a targeted small-bowel segment for EUS-guided stent insertion. The primary end point was the rate of technical success.

    11 patients (45 % women; mean [standard deviation (SD)] age 64.9 [8.6]) with malignant gastric outlet obstruction were included. Technical and clinical success (ability to tolerate an oral diet) were achieved in 91 % (10/11) and 80 % (8/10) of patients, respectively. There was one adverse event (9 %) due to stent migration. Two patients (18 %) required re-intervention for stent obstruction secondary to food impaction. The mean (SD) time to a low residue diet was 3.5 (2.4) days.

    M-EPASS appears to facilitate the technique of EUS-GE, potentially enhancing its safety and clinical adoption. Larger studies are needed to validate this innovative approach to gastric outlet obstruction.

For example, dauer larvae (DL) of the obligate entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) Heterorhabditis and Steinernema can invade insects, evade their defenses, and cause death. Although DL were long assumed to be the only infective stage of nematodes, recent reports suggest that L2-L3 larvae of facultative EPNs are also capable of killing insects. There are no studies, to our knowledge, about the role of nonimmunological barriers (the exoskeleton and its openings) in avoiding infection by DL and L2-L3 larvae, or whether these larval stages evade the host immune system in the same way. The objective of this study was to examine these questions by infecting Galleria mellonella with the facultative parasitic nematode Rhabditis regina. DL or L2-L3 larvae were either deposited on or near the moths or injected into their hemocoel. Once nematodes reached the hemocoel, the following host immune response parameters were quantified prophenoloxidase, phenoloxidase, lytic activity, and the number of granular hemocytes. DL showed a greater ability to penetrate the exoskeleton than L2-L3 larvae. Once inside, however, both went unnoticed by the immune system and killed the insect. A higher number of granular hemocytes was activated by L2-L3 larvae than DL. We show for the first time that L2-L3 larvae can penetrate and evade the insect immune system. Further research is needed to compare facultative and specialized EPNs to determine which is more likely, with both DL and L2-L3 larvae, to evade insect defense barriers and produce death. The results will contribute to understanding the evolution of virulence in entomopathogenic nematodes.A commercially available active extremity dosemeter is a promising candidate for medical staff aid individual monitoring of the eye lens. We investigated the applicability of the newly developed active extremity dosemeter, which uses a low-energy photon probe, to eye lens dose monitoring by performing a complete characterization of the dosemeters. Performance tests revealed that the active extremity dosemeter would overestimate personal dose equivalent, Hp(3), when the probe is worn close to the lens of the eye of a medial worker without any improvement in the response. Introducing an appropriate filter into the probe for low-energy photon has proven to improve the response. The dosemeter then satisfies the criteria of the personal dosemeter for eye lens dosimetry and can be applicable to individual monitoring of eye lens dose. This article also discusses the applicability of the dosemeter to area monitoring for decision making regarding additional monitoring of the eye lens and the extremities.

    Children conceived by ART weigh less and are shorter at the time of delivery. The extent to which differences in growth according to mode of conception persist during childhood, and the role of underlying parental subfertility, remains unclear.

    We conducted a prospective study population-based study. We studied 81461 children participating in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and 544113 adolescents screened for military conscription.

    Conception by ART as registered in the Medical Birth Registry. We compared maternally reported length/height and weight among children in MoBa from mid-pregnancy to age 7 according to mode of conception using mixed-effects linear regression. Differences in self-reported height and weight at 17 years of age at screening for military conscription were assessed with linear regression.

We studied 81461 children participating in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and 544113 adolescents screened for military conscription. Conception by ART as registered in the Medical Birth Registry. We compared maternally reported length/height and weight among children in MoBa from mid-pregnancy to age 7 according to mode of conception using mixed-effects linear regression. Differences in self-reported height and weight at 17 years of age at screening for military conscription were assessed with linear regression.

  • A year ago, we began a project designed to align public messages from 10 organizations involved in advance care planning (ACP), palliative care (PC), and hospice to increase public engagement. By public messaging, we are referring to a well-established evidence-driven method of disseminating information at scale that enables the public to take action to protect their health. Our project plan was upended by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic-but we used the opportunity to conduct focus groups during the pandemic that, compared with focus groups conducted before the pandemic, provide an important portrait of public perceptions of serious illness care that can be used to design for greater public engagement. Our findings can be summarized in three observations. First, misunderstanding of ACP, PC, and hospice is wide ranging and deep. Second, COVID-19 evokes its own brand of confusion and ambivalence that is distinct from other serious illnesses. And third, distrust of the health care system has become the new normal. Despite these findings, our focus group participants strongly endorsed five messaging principles (1) talk up the benefits, (2) present choices for every step, (3) use stories that are positive and aspirational, (4) invite dialogue-more than once, and (5) invoke a new team-of people who matter, clinicians, medical institutions, and community organizations who are ready to help. After listening to 100-word stories describing real patient experiences with ACP, PC, and hospice, our focus group participants expressed interest and appreciation. But to improve public engagement broadly, we need to explain our work to the general public in a way that makes them want to know more.Understanding metabolic function requires knowledge of the dynamics, interdependence, and regulation of metabolic networks. However, multiple professional societies have recognized that most undergraduate biochemistry students acquire only a surface-level understanding of metabolism. We hypothesized that guiding students through interactive computer simulations of metabolic systems would increase their ability to recognize how individual interactions between components affect the behavior of a system under different conditions. The computer simulations were designed with an interactive activity (i.e., module) that used the predict-observe-explain model of instruction to guide students through a process in which they iteratively predict outcomes, test their predictions, modify the interactions of the system, and then retest the outcomes. We found that biochemistry students using modules performed better on metabolism questions compared with students who did not use the modules. The average learning gain was 8% with modules and 0% without modules, a small to medium effect size. We also confirmed that the modules did not create or reinforce a gender bias. Our modules provide instructors with a dynamic, systems-driven approach to help students learn about metabolic regulation and equip students with important cognitive skills, such as interpreting and analyzing simulation results, and technical skills, such as building and simulating computer-based models.Maintaining your research team's productivity during the COVID-19 era can be a challenge. Developing new strategies to mentor your research trainees in remote work environments will not only support research productivity and progress toward degree, but also help to keep your mentees' academic and research careers on track. We describe a three-step process grounded in reflective practice that research mentors and mentees can use together to reassess, realign, and reimagine their mentoring relationships to enhance their effectiveness, both in the current circumstances and for the future. Drawing on evidence-based approaches, a series of questions for mentees around documented mentoring competencies provide structure for remote mentoring plans. Special consideration is given to how these plans must address the psychosocial needs and diverse backgrounds of mentors and mentees in the unique conditions that require remote interactions.A central focus in science education is to foster the success of students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC). However, representation and achievement gaps relative to the majority still exist for minoritized students at all levels of science education and beyond. We suggest that majority groups defining the definitions and measures of success may exert "soft power" over minoritized student success. Using a hegemonic and critical race theory lens, we examined five years of research articles in CBE-Life Sciences Education to explore how success was defined and measured and what frameworks guided the definitions of student success. The majority of articles did not explicitly define success, inherently suggesting "everyone knows" its definition. The articles that did define success often used quantitative, academic outcomes like grade point average and exam scores, despite commonly cited frameworks with other metrics. When students defined success, they focused on different aspects, such as gaining leadership skills and building career networks, suggesting a need to integrate student voice into current success definitions. Using these results, we provide suggestions for research, policy, and practice regarding student success. We urge self-reflection and institutional change in our definitions of success, via consideration of a diversity of student voices.While student stress and anxiety are frequently cited as having negative effects on students' academic performance, the role that instructors can play in mitigating these challenges is often underappreciated. When coupled with strategies to change student evaluation and assessment, these approaches may collectively reduce student stress and anxiety, as well as improve student performance. We then discuss the roles that instructors may play in empowering students with skills that improve their time management, studying, and approach toward learning, with an eye toward ensuring their success across all their academic endeavors.

By using suitable Lyapunov functions and LaSalle's invariance principle, it is shown that when time delay is equal to zero, the immunity-inactivated reproduction ratio is a threshold determining the global dynamics of the model. By means of the persistence theory for infinite dimensional systems, it is proven that if the immunity-inactivated reproduction ratio is greater than unity, the model is permanent. Choosing time delay as the bifurcation parameter and analyzing the corresponding characteristic equation of the linearized system, the existence of a Hopf bifurcation at the immunity-activated equilibrium is established. Numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the theoretical results and reveal the effects of some key parameters on viral dynamics.Aiming at the problems of data transmission, storage, and processing difficulties in the fault diagnosis of bearing acoustic emission (AE) signals, this paper proposes a weak fault feature enhancement diagnosis method for processing bearing AE signals in the compressed domain based on the theory of compressed sensing (CS). This method is based on the frequency band selection scheme of CS and particle swarm optimization (PSO) method. Firstly, the method uses CS technology to compress and sample the bearing AE signal to obtain the compressed signal; then, the compressed AE signals are decomposed by the compression domain wavelet packet decomposition matrix to extract the characteristic parameters of different frequency bands, and then the weighted sum of the characteristic parameters is carried out. At the same time, the PSO method is used to optimize the weight coefficient to obtain the enhanced fault characteristics; finally, a feature-enhanced-support vector machine (SVM) fault diagnosis model is established. Different feature parameters are feature-enhanced to form a feature set, which is used as input, and the SVM method is used for pattern recognition of different types and degrees of bearing faults. The experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively extract the fault features in the bearing AE signal while improving the efficiency of signal processing and analysis and realize the accurate classification of bearing faults.A new method for lightweight gear design based on Michell Trusses Design method was investigated in this research to compare with the traditional Topology Optimization method. A workflow with detailed steps was established using example of constructing Michell Trusses to make lightening holes at the gear's web. In this workflow, Michell Trusses are generated from a set of concentric circles. By solving the equation with the variables of concentric circles (complexity), the optimal orthogonality of trusses can be determined. Real experiments were conducted to compare the two design methods in the aspects of design costs and product mechanical property, including recording the time consumed in each link and detecting the force of failure of gears by a testing platform. In this paper, we propose a novel label propagation algorithm, called WRWPLPA (Parallel Label Propagation Algorithm based on Weight and Random Walk). WRWPLPA proposes a new similarity calculation method combining weights and random walks. It uses weights and similarities to update labels in the process of label propagation, improving the accuracy and stability of community detection. First, weight is calculated by combining the neighborhood index and the position index, and the weight is used to distinguish the importance of the nodes in the network. Then, use random walk strategy to describe the similarity between nodes, and the label of nodes are updated by combining the weight and similarity. Finally, parallel propagation is comprehensively proposed to utilize label probability efficiently. Experiment results on artificial network datasets and real network datasets show that our algorithm has improved accuracy and stability compared with other label propagation algorithms.This paper tackles a recent challenge in smart city that how to improve the accuracy of short-term natural gas load forecasting. Existing works on natural gas forecasting mostly reply on a combined forecasting model by simply integrating several single-forecasting models. To address the problem, we design a new natural gas load forecasting scheme based on ensemble multilayer perceptron (EMLP) with adaptive weight correction. Our method firstly normalizes multi-source data as original data set, which is further segmented by a window model. Then, the abnormal data is removed and subsequently interpolated to form a complete normalized data set. Furthermore, we integrate a series of multilayer perceptron (MLP) network to construct an ensemble forecasting model. An adaptive weight correction function is introduced to dynamically modify the weight of the previous predicted result. Since the correction function can match well the volatility characteristics of load data, the prediction accuracy is significantly improved.
