Laypersons were recruited via crowdsourcing to view photographs of normal ears or one of the following ear deformities, pre- and post-molding constricted, cryptotia, cupped/lopped, helical rim deformity, prominent, and Stahl. Participants answered questions regarding perceptions and treatment preferences for the ear. Statistical analyses included multiple linear and logistic regressions and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests.

It is understudied whether the posed association of oral antibiotics with colorectal cancer (CRC) varies between antibiotic spectrums, colorectal continuum, and if a non-linear dose-dependent relationship is present.
Three electronic databases and a trial platform were searched for all relevant studies, from inception until February 2020, without restrictions. Random-effects meta-analyses provided pooled effect-sizes (ES) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Dose-response analyses modelling the relationship between number of days exposed to antibiotics and CRC risk were extended to non-linear multivariable random-effects models.
Of 6483 identified publications ten were eligible, including 4.1 million individuals and over 73,550 CRC cases. The pooled CRC risk was increased among individuals who ever-used antibiotics (ES = 1.17, 95%CI 1.05-1.30), particularly for broad-spectrum antibiotics (ES = 1.70, 95%CI 1.26-2.30), but not for narrow-spectrum antibiotic (ES = 1.11, 95% 0.93-1.32). The dose-response analysis did not provide strong evidence of any particular dose-response association, and the risk patterns were rather similar for colon and rectal cancer.

We conducted a nested case-control study with 286 pairs of T2DM cases and matched controls nested in the Rural Chinese Cohort Study. Conditional logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident T2DM risk according to ABCG1 methylation level at baseline and its dynamic change at follow-up examination. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were used to analyze the association between ABCG1 methylation and its possible risk factors in the control group. We found that T2DM risk increased by 16% (OR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.02-1.31) with each 1% increase in DNA methylation levels of the ABCG1 loci CpG13 and CpG14. DNA methylation change of the ABCG1 locus CpG15 during the 6-year follow-up was associated with increased T2DM risk T2DM risk increased by 78% in the upper tertile group (methylation gain ≥5%) versus lower tertile group (methylation gain less then 1%) (OR = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.01-3.15). Furthermore, body mass index was positively correlated with the DNA methylation level of the ABCG1 loci CpG13, CpG14 and CpG15. Three kinds of the composite matrix material have been used NBR, HNBR and FKM. The reduced graphene oxide in the form of crumped flakes has been applied as the filler influencing on thermal conductivity of the composites. Two values of graphene oxide weight concentration have been taken into account in the investigation. Thermal conductivity of the composites and basic matrix has been measured by the professional apparatus with the use of the guarded heat plate method. Before measurements the preliminary tests using the simplified comparative method have been performed. The results obtained, both from preliminary tests and using the guarded heat plate method, show an increase in thermal conductivity with increasing the reduced graphene oxide content in the composite. The experimental investigation allowed to determine not only the increase in thermal properties of graphene oxide/rubber composites compared to the basic matrix, but also the absolute values of thermal conductivities. Additionally, the SEM analysis showed that the tested composite samples contain agglomerates of the rGO nanoparticles. The occurrence of agglomerates could affect the composite thermal properties. This was noticed in the comparatively measurements of the temperature of different composites during the heating of samples tested. The maximum enhancement of thermal conductivity obtained was about 11% compared to the basis matrix of the composites tested.Some clinical trials showed that omega-3 fatty acid (FA) reduced cardiovascular events, but it remains unknown whether omega-3 FA supplementation changes the composition of FAs and their metabolites in the heart and how the changes, if any, exert beneficial effects on cardiac structure and function. In this article, an ultrafast power Doppler imaging method based on a nonlinear compounding framework, called frame-multiply-and-sum (UPDI-FMAS), is proposed to improve contrast resolution. In UPDI-FMAS, unlike conventional channel-domain delay-multiply-and-sum (DMAS) beamforming, the signal coherence is estimated based on autocorrelation function over plane-wave angle frames. To avoid phase distortion of blood flow signals during the autocorrelation process, clutter filtering is preferentially applied to individual beamformed plane-wave data set. Therefore, only coherent blood flow signals are emphasized, while incoherent background noise is suppressed. The performance of the UPDI-FMAS was evaluated with simulation, phantom, and in vivo studies. For the simulation and phantom studies with a constant laminar flow, the UPDI-FMAS showed improvements in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) to those of UPDI-CC, i.e., over 10 and 7 dB for 13 plane waves, respectively, and the performances were improved as the number of plane waves increased. Moreover, the enhancement of the image quality due to the increased SNR and CNR in UPDI-FMAS was more clearly depicted with the in vivo study, in which a human kidney and a tumor-bearing mouse were evaluated. In this article, an ultrafast power Doppler imaging method based on a nonlinear compounding framework, called frame-multiply-and-sum (UPDI-FMAS), is proposed to improve contrast resolution. In UPDI-FMAS, unlike conventional channel-domain delay-multiply-and-sum (DMAS) beamforming, the signal coherence is estimated based on autocorrelation function over plane-wave angle frames. To avoid phase distortion of blood flow signals during the autocorrelation process, clutter filtering is preferentially applied to individual beamformed plane-wave data set. Therefore, only coherent blood flow signals are emphasized, while incoherent background noise is suppressed. The performance of the UPDI-FMAS was evaluated with simulation, phantom, and in vivo studies. For the simulation and phantom studies with a constant laminar flow, the UPDI-FMAS showed improvements in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) to those of UPDI-CC, i.e., over 10 and 7 dB for 13 plane waves, respectively, and the performances were improved as the number of plane waves increased. Moreover, the enhancement of the image quality due to the increased SNR and CNR in UPDI-FMAS was more clearly depicted with the in vivo study, in which a human kidney and a tumor-bearing mouse were evaluated. It is well known that exercise can improve the glycemic profile in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, the optimal timing of exercise is often debated. Our aim in this study was to compare the effects of exercise performed at different times of the day and different timing in relation to meals on 24-hour glucose profiles in people with T2D.

MorEx had a lower respiratory exchange ratio compared with AftEx and EveEx (p<0.01). The decrease in glucose during exercise was less pronounced for MorEx compared with AftEx (p<0.05).

Voice therapy faces a double challenge, interventions using telepractice, and delivering rehabilitation services to a growing population of patients at risk of functional impairment related to the COVID-19 disease. Moreover, as COVID-19 is transmitted through droplets, it is critical to understand how to mitigate these risks during assessment and treatment.
To promote safety, and effective clinical practice to voice assessment and rehabilitation in the pandemic COVID-19 context for speech-language pathologists.
A group of 11 experts in voice and swallowing disorders from five different countries conducted a consensus recommendation following the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery rules building a clinical guide for speech-language pathologists during this pandemic context.
The clinical guide provides 65 recommendations for clinicians in the management of voice disorders during the pandemic and includes advice from assessment, direct treatment, telepractice, and teamwork. The consensus was reached 95% for all topics.
This guideline should be taken only as recommendation; each clinician must attempt to mitigate the risk of infection and achieve the best therapeutic results taking into account the patient's particular reality.

It is a priority for local health authorities to take measures that are adapted to the particular situation and regulatory framework of their respective territory. In this article, the authors present the regenerative medicine action plan promoted by the Andalusian Transplant Coordination (i.e., the action plan for the largest region in Spain), highlighting the aspects the authors believe are fundamental to its success. The authors describe, in summary form, the methodology, phases of the plan, actions designed, key collaborators, important milestones achieved and main lessons they have drawn from their experience so that this can serve as an example for other institutions interested in promoting the ethical use of this type of therapy.
Literature on epidemiology of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) in the Middle East is scarce.
We prospectively examined the association between infection and clinical outcomes in 44 patients with idiopathic TTP, with severely deficient ADAMTS13. We also investigated seasonality of the disease, hoping to better understand the epidemiology of idiopathic TTP.
Summer demonstrated significantly lower incidence for idiopathic TTP, compared with other seasons P = 0.0003. Fourteen patients had 15 episodes with a suspected concomitant infection. Five initial episodes were triggered by an infection (33.3 %), all presenting in winter, six episodes were associated with an exacerbation (40 %) and infection triggered a relapse in the other four episodes (26.7 %), with 2 episodes presenting in winter. TTP associated infections included central line infection, urinary tract infection and post-operative infection. In neuroscience and other scientific disciplines, instructors increasingly appreciate the value of writing. Teaching students to write well helps them succeed in school, not only because they perform better on assessments but also because well-structured writing assignments improve learning. Moreover, the ability to write well is an essential professional skill, because good clear writing in conjunction with good clear thinking results in increased success in fellowship applications, grant proposals, and publications. However, teaching writing in neuroscience classrooms is challenging for several reasons. Students may not initially recognize the importance of writing, teachers may lack training in the pedagogy of writing instruction, and both teachers and students must commit substantial time and effort to writing if progress is to be made. Here, we detail effective strategies for teaching writing to undergraduates, including scaffolding of teaching assignments, both within a class and across a curriculum; use of different types of writing assignments; early integration of writing into courses; peer review and revision of assignments; mentoring by student tutors; and use of defined rubrics. We also discuss how these strategies can be utilized effectively in the context of multicultural classrooms and labs.Adverse early life experiences, i.e. abusive parenting, during postnatal development, induce long-lasting effects on the stress response systems and behavior. Such changes persist throughout an individual's life, making him/her vulnerable to suffer psychiatric disorders, including anxiety disorders and drug addiction. Rat pup maternal separation (MS) is a widely used rodent early-life stress model. MS induces changes in the dopamine and endocannabinoid systems in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) that facilitate alcohol consumption. In this study, our endeavor was to determine if social isolation during adolescence (aSI) was as efficient as MS to facilitate alcohol intake; and moreover, if their combination (MS + aSI) induces even higher alcohol intake and exacerbates anxiety-like behaviors. Also, we evaluated dopamine and endocannabinoid receptors in the NAcc to describe potential changes caused by MS, aSI or both. Wistar rats were reared under 4 different conditions non-MS + social housing (SH), MS + SH, non-MS + aSI and MS + aSI. Once these rats became adults they were submitted to a voluntary alcohol intake protocol for 10 days. Similar groups of rats with no exposure to alcohol whatsoever, were sacrificed to dissect out the NAcc to analyze the expression of cannabinoid (CB1R and CB2R) and dopamine (D2R and D3R) receptors. Results showed that MS, aSI and MS + aSI increase both CB1R, D2R and D3R expression in the NAcc and also increase alcohol intake and anxiety. Conclusively, the memory enhancement by SOV was mediated through oxidative balance, mitochondrial enzyme complex activation, and improved insulin signaling regulation. However, the primary mechanism of SOV remained attenuation of tau pathology by the upregulation of IRS-1/PI3K/AKT/GSK-3β pathway and reversal of insulin resistance in terms of IDE. However, in recent years the possibility of a therapeutic approach with vasodilators and myorelaxants, such as nitric oxide (NO) donors, has gained interest. NO controls many endothelial cell functions, including angiogenesis and vascular permeability, by regulating the expression of angiogenic factors, such as Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor. In the present study, we investigated if treatment of pregnancies complicated by IUGR with NO donors affects the expression of Epidermal Growth Factor-Like Domain 7 (EGFL7), a secreted endothelial factor, previously demonstrated to be expressed by both endothelial and trophoblast cells and involved in proper placental development. NO donor treatment induced placental levels of EGFL7 and, in association with oral fluids, significantly improved fetal growth. Ex vivo experiments confirmed that NO donors increased expression and secretion of EGFL7 by villous explants. To specifically investigate the potential response of trophoblast cells to NO, we treated HTR8-sVneo cells with NO donors and observed induction of EGFL7 expression. Altogether, our findings indicate that NO induces endothelial and trophoblast expression of EGFL7 in the placenta and improves fetal growth, suggesting a correlation between placental levels of EGFL7 and pregnancy outcome.

Wistar rats were reared under 4 different conditions non-MS + social housing (SH), MS + SH, non-MS + aSI and MS + aSI. Elevations in serum creatinine, uric acid, sodium, and potassium were reported in aged rats. Treatment with Ta-65 or pomegranate effectively ameliorated all the deteriorations induced by normal aging in male fertility and renal function. HE staining was performed to evaluate the myocardial injury caused by I/R and the effect of methionine-restricted diet (MRD) in I/R ****. IHC and Western blot were carried out to analyse the expression of CSE, CHOP and active caspase3 in I/R **** and hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) cells. TUNEL assay and flow cytometry were used to assess the apoptotic status of I/R **** and H/R cells. MTT was performed to analyse the proliferation of H/R cells. H2S assay was used to evaluate the concentration of H2S in the myocardial tissues and peripheral blood of I/R ****. I/R-induced mediated myocardial injury and apoptosis were partially reversed by methionine-restricted diet (MRD) via the down-regulation of CSE expression and up-regulation of CHOP and active caspase3 expression. The decreased H2S concentration in myocardial tissues and peripheral blood of I/R **** was increased by MRD. Accordingly, in a cellular model of I/R injury established with H9C2 cells, cell proliferation was inhibited, cell apoptosis was increased, and the expressions of CSE, CHOP and active caspase3 were dysregulated, whereas NaHS treatment alleviated the effect of I/R injury in H9C2 cells in a dose-dependent manner. This study provided a deep insight into the mechanism underlying the role of MRD in I/R-induced myocardial injury.
OptiVol fluid index was developed as a transthoracic impedance-based indicator of short-term risk for heart failure hospitalization (HFH). OptiVol is calculated as the accumulating difference between daily impedance (measured impedance) and long-term average impedance (reference impedance). Measured impedance alone was thought to have limited prognostic utility; however, measured impedance has the advantage of being simple, direct, and possibly additive to OptiVol fluid index in establishing long-term HFH risk. We tested the hypothesis that directly measured impedance has independent prognostic value in predicting long-term HFH risk and that changes in measured impedance result in a change in predicted long-term HFH risk.

This study provided a deep insight into the mechanism underlying the role of MRD in I/R-induced myocardial injury. OptiVol fluid index was developed as a transthoracic impedance-based indicator of short-term risk for heart failure hospitalization (HFH). In the current study, we aimed to test the hypothesis that unexplained female infertility is related to lipid metabolism, given the lipid signature of positive-outcome IVF patients we previously found. Assuming that FF samples from IVF patients with male factor infertility can represent a non-hindered metabolic microenvironment, we compared them to FF taken from women with unexplained infertility. FF from patients undergoing IVF was examined for its lipid composition. We found highly increased triacylglycerol levels, with a lower abundance of monoacylglycerols, phospholipids and sphingolipids in the FF of patients with unexplained infertility. The alterations in the lipid class accumulation were independent of the body mass index (BMI) and were altogether kept across the age groups. Potential lipid biomarkers for pregnancy outcomes showed a highly discriminative abundance in the FF of unexplained infertility patients. Relevant differences were found in the metabolic profiles of the different treatments with respect to the controls. A large overlap of the metabolic profiles in DT-8 vs. K and VIN vs. K suggests a similar biological response and mechanism of action, significantly diverse with respect to CDDP. On the other hand, DT8 seems to act by disorganizing the mitotic spindle and ultimately blocking the cell division, through a mechanism implying methionine depletion and/or S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) limitation.
Polypharmacy is most prevalent among the elderly population and in particular among nursing home residents. The frequency of the use of drugs with pharmacogenomics (PGx)-based dosing guidelines for CYP2D6, CYP2C9, CYP2C19 and SLCO1B1 were measured among nursing home residents in the Capital Region of Denmark as well as drug-drug interactions. The aim was to evaluate the potential of applying PGx-test as a supportive tool in medication reviews.
Drug use among nursing home residents during 2017-2018 in the Capital Region of Copenhagen, for drugs with PGx-based dosing guidelines available through the PharmGKB website, were measured. Drug-drug interactions were scored in severity by using drug interaction checkers.
The number of residents using drugs with PGx-based actionable dosing guidelines (AG) were 119 out of 141 residents (84.3%). Of these 119 residents, 87 residents used drugs with AG for CYP2C19, 47 residents for CYP2D6, and 42 residents for SLCO1B1. In addition, 30 residents used two drugs with an AG for CYP2C19, and for CYP2D6, it was only seven residents. The most used drugs with AG were clopidogrel (42), pantoprazole (32), simvastatin (30), metoprolol (25), and citalopram (24). The most frequent drug interactions found with warnings were combinations of proton pump inhibitors and clopidogrel underscoring the potential for phenoconversion.

Since 55% to 95% of DOACs are bound to plasma proteins, the in silico docking and ligand-binding properties of drugs apixaban, betrixaban, dabigatran, edoxaban, and rivaroxaban and of the prodrug dabigatran etexilate to human serum albumin (HSA), the most abundant plasma protein, have been investigated. DOACs bind to the fatty acid (FA) site 1 (FA1) of ligand-free HSA, whereas they bind to the FA8 and FA9 sites of heme-Fe(III)- and myristic acid-bound HSA. DOACs binding to the FA1 site of ligand-free HSA has been validated by competitive inhibition of heme-Fe(III) recognition. Values of the dissociation equilibrium constant for DOACs binding to the FA1 site (ie, calc KDOAC ) derived from in silico docking simulations (ranging between 1.2 × 10-8 M and 1.4 × 10-6 M) agree with those determined experimentally from competitive inhibition of heme-Fe(III) binding (ie, exp KDOAC ; ranging between 2.5 × 10-7 M and 2.2 × 10-6 M). In addition, this study highlights the inequivalence of rivaroxaban binding to mammalian serum albumin. An empathy map is a tool which aids in understanding another person's perspective. Empathy maps have up until now not been used in a medical education setting.
To assess the attitudes towards, applicability and usefulness of empathy maps as part of medical student's communication skills training.
Empathy map training was introduced to first-year medical student communication skills training at two UK-based medical schools. Twenty-eight participants in total agreed to be interviewed about their experiences using the empathy map, including sixteen students and twelve patient partners who assisted with communication skills training.
Medical students and patient partners perceive value in empathy map training. Medical students stated that the empathy map training impacted on their views of empathy and patient-centredness by highlighting the importance of patient-centred care. Medical students and patient partners enjoyed the experience of completing the empathy map and had suggestions for how it could be improved in the future.
Empathy maps could provide a cost-effective way to encourage empathic and patient-centred care in medical education. Furthermore, there is no reason why empathy maps would not aid in any caring profession. Further research is needed to confirm that empathy maps do increase empathy.

We have reviewed 11 referred diabetes mellitus patients investigated for allergic contact dermatitis reactions to medical devices and specifically Dexcom G6

Encephalitozoon intestinalis affects many physiological processes of host cells to survive, proliferate, and spread to different regions within the body. In this study, the effects of the parasite on host cell apoptosis and proliferation were investigated.
To determine the impact of the parasite on the host cell apoptosis, changes in the expression profile of genes were investigated with the qPCR array using the Human Apoptosis Panel in infected and non-infected macrophage cells. Also, the rate of apoptosis in the cells was determined by Giemsa staining method. Cell proliferation was determined by measuring the DNA concentration in infected and non-infected cells.
The thirty-six of apoptosis-related genes were down-regulated, while 20 of apoptosis-related genes were up-regulated in infected cells compared to uninfected cells. However, there were no significant changes detected in 32 analyzed genes between infected and control groups. E. intestinalis was determined to decrease cell proliferation in U937 macrophage cells.

To determine the impact of the parasite on the host cell apoptosis, changes in the expression profile of genes were investigated with the qPCR array using the Human Apoptosis Panel in infected and non-infected macrophage cells. Also, the rate of apoptosis in the cells was determined by Giemsa staining method. Cell proliferation was determined by measuring the DNA concentration in infected and non-infected cells. The thirty-six of apoptosis-related genes were down-regulated, while 20 of apoptosis-related genes were up-regulated in infected cells compared to uninfected cells. However, there were no significant changes detected in 32 analyzed genes between infected and control groups.
