  • This study investigated the accuracy of sixteen models of commercial dental radiometers (DR) in measuring the output of thirty-eight LED light curing units (LCUs) compared with a 'gold standard' laboratory-grade spectrometer integrating-sphere (IS) assembly. Nineteen Type I (fiber-bundle light guide) and nineteen Type II (light source in head) LED LCUs were tested, some using different output modes and light guides, resulting in 61 test subsets per radiometer. Gold standard (GS) output measurements (n = 3) were taken using the IS and confirmed with two types of laboratory-grade power meter (PowerMax-Pro 150 HD and PM10-19C; Coherent). Individual LCU irradiance values were normalized against IS data. The GS method yielded reproducible data with a 0.4% pooled coefficient of variation for the LCUs. Mean power values ranged from 0.19 W to 2.40 W. Overall power values for the laboratory-grade power meters were within 5% of GS values. Individual LCU/DR normalized irradiance values ranged from 7% to 535% of the GS; an order of magnitude greater than previous reports. BM II was the only radiometer to average within 20% of normalized pooled GS irradiance values, whereas other radiometers differed by up to 85%. Ten radiometers failed to provide any reading for 1 LCU. When tested with the PowerMax-Pro in high speed (20 kHz) mode, eight LCUs demonstrated pulsing outputs undetectable at the standard (10 Hz) data acquisition rate. Sufficient light exposure is critical for the successful curing of dental resin-based materials. Substantial discrepancies may occur between actual and estimated radiometric data using current DRs. More accurate DRs need to be developed. Manufacturers' accuracy claims for DRs should specify compatible LCUs and testing parameters.
    Maternal stressful life events during pregnancy have been associated with immune dysregulation and increased risk for asthma and atopy in offspring. Few studies have investigated whether prenatal stress is associated with increased overall or specific infectious diseases in childhood, nor explored sex differences. We sought to examine the relationship between the nature and timing of maternal stress in pregnancy and hospitalisation with infection in offspring.

Univariate logistic regression found that the odds ratio (OR) for the slower walking speed ( less then 1 m/sec) in the VI individuals was significantly higher at 7.40 (3.36-16.30;95% CI, P less then 0.001) than in non-VI individuals. A total of 3 patients (1.4%) suffered AKI, including 2 patients in 30 less then eGFR≤60 ml·min-1·1.73m-2 group and 1 patient in 60 less then eGFR≤90 ml·min-1·1.73m-2 group. The incidence of AKI in eGFR less then 60 ml·min-1·1.73m-2 group was 2.4% (2/82). Among the 217 patients, AKR occurred in 85(39.2%) patients, 3(1.4%) experienced AKI and renal function remained unchanged in 129 (59.4%) patients post TAVR. CYP2C19 gene variations in patients with coronary heart disease were compared with the 1000 Genomes Browse database and the sequencing results of healthy controls to determine whether the gene variation was a genetic mutation or a genetic polymorphism. After that, PolyPhen-2 prediction softwand one new mutation G27V (1 case), no corresponding gene mutation was found in healthy controls. It was found that T130K and M136K were probably damaging, G27V was possibly damaging, and N277K and V472I were benign mutations. In vitro, we demonstrated that the platelet aggregation rate of the M136K gene mutation group was 24.83% lower than that of the wild type (59.58% vs. 34.75%; P0.05). The incidence of RAT was observed. The patients were divided into the RAT group and non-RAT group, clinical data were collected and compared. Moreover, the types and distributions of thrombus in radial artery as well as the acute radial artery injuries under OCT were observed. Univariate analysis followed by multivariate analysis were performed to identify potential risk factors. The presence and location of myocardial fibrosis were identified by CMR gadolinium contrast delayed enhancement (LGE). The range of LGE (LGE%) was calculated by visual analysis. The levels of N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) in peripheral blood were measured.

  • Our results demonstrate theta rhythmicity in typing (around 6.5 Hz) through the two different behavioral analyses. Synchronization between typing and neuronal oscillations occurred at frequencies ranging from 4 to 15 Hz, but to a larger extent for lower frequencies. However, peak synchronization frequency was idiosyncratic across participants, therefore not specific to theta nor to midfrontal regions, and correlated somewhat with peak typing frequency. Errors and trials associated with stronger cognitive control were not associated with changes in synchronization at any frequency.     Our results demonstrate theta rhythmicity in typing (around 6.5 Hz) through the two different behavioral analyses. Synchronization between typing and neuronal oscillations occurred at frequencies ranging from 4 to 15 Hz, but to a larger extent for lower frequencies. However, peak synchronization frequency was idiosyncratic across participants, therefore not specific to theta nor to midfrontal regions, and correlated somewhat with peak typing frequency. Errors and trials associated with stronger cognitive control were not associated with changes in synchronization at any frequency.     A total of 11 patients diagnosed with COVID-19-induced ARDS who were admitted to the intensive care units (ICUs) of two hospitals enrolled in this study.     Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global problem to which the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic may further contribute. With resources deployed away from antimicrobial stewardship, evidence of substantial pre-emptive antibiotic use in COVID-19 patients and indirectly, with deteriorating economic conditions fuelling poverty potentially impacting on levels of resistance, AMR threat remains significant.

    In this paper, main AMR countermeasures are revisited and priorities to tackle the issue are re-iterated. The need for collaboration is stressed, acknowledging the relationship between human health, animal health and environment ("One Health" approach). Among the stated priorities, the initiative by the European Medicines Regulatory Network to further strengthen the measures in combatting AMR is highlighted. Likewise, it is asserted that other emerging health threats require global collaboration with the One Health approach offering a valuable blueprint for action.

  • Collagen membranes have been used as bioresorbable barrier membranes in guided tissue/bone regeneration. However, the collagen membranes currently used in clinics lack an active antibacterial function, although infection at surgical sites presents a realistic challenge for guided tissue/bone regeneration. In this study, we successfully prepared novel and advanced collagen composite membranes from collagen and complexes of heparin and chelates of minocycline and Ca2+ ions. These membranes were characterized for chemical structures, morphology, elemental compositions and tensile strength. In vitro release studies were conducted to evaluate the release kinetics of minocycline from these membranes. Agar disk diffusion assays were used to assess their sustained antibacterial capability against model pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. The chemical and physical characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of minocycline-loaded collagen composite membranes, namely NCCM-1 and NCCM-2. Both membranes had weaker tensile strength as compared with commercial collagen membranes. They achieved sustained release of minocycline for at least 4 weeks in simulated body fluid (pH 7.4) at 37°C. Moreover, both membranes demonstrated potent sustained antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus. These results suggested that the advanced collagen composite membranes containing minocycline can be exploited as novel guided tissue regeneration membranes or wound dressing by providing additional antibacterial functions.Novel dual redox/pH-sensitive star-like amphiphilic sucrose-oligo(butyl fumarate) (thioglycolic acid conjugate)-SS-poly(ethylene glycol) (Suc-OBF(TGA)-SS-PEG) copolymers and their self-assembled micelles were prepared and utilized for intracellular doxorubicin delivery. This study aimed to understand which different population groups of adults in the United States consider several key restriction policies as necessary to combat COVID-19. Survey data from Wave 64 (March 19-24, 2020) of the Pew Research Center's American Trends Panel (n=10,609) and logistic regression were used to evaluate the association between socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, employment status, political party affiliation, news exposure, census region, and opinions about COVID-19 restriction policies. The policies included restricting international travel, imposing business closures, banning large group gatherings, cancelling entertainment events, closing schools, limiting restaurants to carry-out only, and postponing state primary elections. Most survey respondents viewed COVID-19 restriction policies as necessary. Views on each restriction policy varied substantially across some population segments such as age, race, and ethnicity. Regardless of population segments, those who followed news closely or considered themselves Democrat/lean Democrat were more likely to consider all the policies as necessary than those not following the news closely or those who considered themselves Republican/lean Republican. The effectiveness of key COVID-19 restriction policies is likely to vary substantially across population groups given that views on the need to implement these policies vary widely. We will also describe how such side-effects should be monitored and managed.     Collagen membranes have been used as bioresorbable barrier membranes in guided tissue/bone regeneration. However, the collagen membranes currently used in clinics lack an active antibacterial function, although infection at surgical sites presents a realistic challenge for guided tissue/bone regeneration. In this study, we successfully prepared novel and advanced collagen composite membranes from collagen and complexes of heparin and chelates of minocycline and Ca2+ ions. These membranes were characterized for chemical structures, morphology, elemental compositions and tensile strength. In vitro release studies were conducted to evaluate the release kinetics of minocycline from these membranes. Agar disk diffusion assays were used to assess their sustained antibacterial capability against model pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. The chemical and physical characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of minocycline-loaded collagen composite membranes, namely NCCM-1 and NCCM-2. Both membranes had weaker tensile strength as compared with commercial collagen membranes. They achieved sustained release of minocycline for at least 4 weeks in simulated body fluid (pH 7.4) at 37°C. Moreover, both membranes demonstrated potent sustained antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus. Survey data from Wave 64 (March 19-24, 2020) of the Pew Research Center's American Trends Panel (n=10,609) and logistic regression were used to evaluate the association between socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, employment status, political party affiliation, news exposure, census region, and opinions about COVID-19 restriction policies. The policies included restricting international travel, imposing business closures, banning large group gatherings, cancelling entertainment events, closing schools, limiting restaurants to carry-out only, and postponing state primary elections. Most survey respondents viewed COVID-19 restriction policies as necessary. Views on each restriction policy varied substantially across some population segments such as age, race, and ethnicity. Regardless of population segments, those who followed news closely or considered themselves Democrat/lean Democrat were more likely to consider all the policies as necessary than those not following the news closely or those who considered themselves Republican/lean Republican. Patient characteristics were summarized, and diagnosis was confirmed by chest CT or PET/CT follow-up. RESULTS. A total of 260 pulmonary intravascular metastases were found, which were classified as type I (no significant abnormality, n = 5), type II (abrupt and uneven thickening of the pulmonary vessel, n = 118), type III (simultaneous invasion of adjacent pulmonary vessel, n = 121), and type IV (large strip-shaped high-density mass, n = 16). The majority were located in peripheral pulmonary vessels (94.2% [245/260]). FDG up-take was increased in 252 lesions, and the mean SUVmax was 4.6 ± 2.5. CONCLUSION. The combination of PET/CT and chest HRCT is an effective approach for detecting pulmonary intravascular metastasis. Using a 5-point scale, the readers scored their confidence in the malignancy of the vertebral lesions. The diagnostic performance (AUC) of the two image sets was assessed via ROC curve analyses. Sensitivities, specificities, and accuracies (for both image sets) were compared using the McNemar test. Kappa coefficients were calculated to assess interobserver agreement. RESULTS. Both readers showed improved diagnostic performance after PDFF was added (AUC, 0.840-0.912 and 0.805-0.895 for readers 1 and 2, respectively). However, adding PDFF did not significantly improve the sensitivity and specificity of either reader (p > .05). Interobserver agreement significantly improved from moderate (κ = 0.563) to excellent (κ = 0.947) after PDFF was added. CONCLUSION.   • Tracheal intubation in COVID-19 patients is a potentially high-risk procedure for healthcare professionals. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is recommended to minimize contact with critical patients with COVID-19 infection. This study aimed to primarily examine the effect of PPE use on intubation time and success rate among prehospital healthcare professionals; additionally, we compared intubation times among prehospital health care professionals using PPE with direct laryngoscopy and video laryngoscopy assistance.

    In this prospective simulation study, we compared the intubation times and success rates among prehospital healthcare professionals who were or were not using PPE. Furthermore, demographic data, previous intubation experience, and previous intubation experience with PPE were recorded.

    Overall time to intubation with PPE use was 51.28 ±â€¯3.89 s, which was significantly higher than that without PPE use (33.03 ±â€¯2.65 s; p < 0.001). In addition, the overall success rate with PPE use was 74.4%, which was significantly lower than that without PPE use (93%;p < 0.001). PPE use increased the average intubation time by 19.73 ±â€¯2.59 s with direct laryngoscopy and by 16.81 ±â€¯2.86 s with video laryngoscopy (p < 0.001).

    PPE use is associated with increased intubation time and decreased success rate. Video laryngoscopy assistance in cases where PPE use is required facilitates faster endotracheal intubation than does direct laryngoscopy assistance.

    Latinas are at an increased risk for diabetes and reproductive health (RH) complications with sexuality and pregnancy. This study explored the understanding of diabetes related to RH, pregnancy, unplanned pregnancies, preconceptioncounseling, tight-control, and family planning among Latina adolescents with diabetes and their mothers and explored converging themes.

    To determine whether manifest refractive astigmatism (RA) or anterior corneal astigmatism (CA) is the best value for excimer laser programming in cases of ocular residual astigmatism (ORA).

    Patients who had undergone LASIK surgery with a disagreement between manifest refractive and corneal cylinder (ocular residual astigmatism ORA)>0.75 D were included retrospectively in this study. We calculated target induced astigmatism vector (TIA), surgically induced astigmatism vector (SIA), difference vector between the astigmatism correction programmed in the excimer laser and refractive astigmatism (DVRA), difference vector between the astigmatism correction programmed in the excimer laser and corneal astigmatism (DVCA) and difference vector between TIA and SIA (DV), by the Alpins method. Vectorial differences between DV and DVRA, and between DV and DVCA, were then calculated to determine whether RA or CA was closest to the ideal cylinder for laser programming.

    Of a total of 104 eyes undergoing LASIK, 22 eyes of 12 patients (21.1%) had an ORA>0.75 D and were included. Mean ORA was 0.9±0.2 D and mean postoperative subjective cylinder was 0.45 D.     As the obesity epidemic worsens, the prevalence of fatty liver disease has increased. However, minimal data exist on the impact of combined fatty liver and metabolic syndrome on hepatectomy outcomes. Therefore, the aim of this analysis is to measure the outcomes of patients who do and do not have a fatty liver undergoing hepatectomy in the presence and absence of the metabolic syndrome.

    Patients with fatty and normal livers undergoing major hepatectomy (≥3 segments) were identified in the 2014 to 2018 American College of Surgeon National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. After propensity matching, 863 patients with fatty and 863 with normal livers were compared. Multiple outcomes were significantly worse in patients with fatty livers (P <.05), including serious morbidity (32% vs 24%), postoperative invasive biliary procedures (15% vs 10%), organ space infections (11% vs 7.8%), and pulmonary complications. Patients with fatty livers and the metabolic syndrome had significantly increased postoperative cardiac arrests, pulmonary embolisms, and mortality (P < .05).

Overall time to intubation with PPE use was 51.28 ±â€¯3.89 s, which was significantly higher than that without PPE use (33.03 ±â€¯2.65 s; p < 0.001). Patients who had undergone LASIK surgery with a disagreement between manifest refractive and corneal cylinder (ocular residual astigmatism ORA)>0.75 D were included retrospectively in this study. We calculated target induced astigmatism vector (TIA), surgically induced astigmatism vector (SIA), difference vector between the astigmatism correction programmed in the excimer laser and refractive astigmatism (DVRA), difference vector between the astigmatism correction programmed in the excimer laser and corneal astigmatism (DVCA) and difference vector between TIA and SIA (DV), by the Alpins method. Vectorial differences between DV and DVRA, and between DV and DVCA, were then calculated to determine whether RA or CA was closest to the ideal cylinder for laser programming. Patients with fatty and normal livers undergoing major hepatectomy (≥3 segments) were identified in the 2014 to 2018 American College of Surgeon National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. Patients undergoing partial hepatectomy and those with missing liver texture data were excluded. Propensity matching was used and adjusted for multiple variables. The studies performed so far demonstrated the potential of this type of investigations for the discovery of both potential epigenetic biomarkers for patient stratification and novel epigenetic mechanisms potentially targetable for cancer therapy. Although traditionally the analysis of histones in clinical samples was performed through antibody-based methods, mass spectrometry (MS) has emerged as a more powerful tool for the unbiased, comprehensive, and quantitative investigation of histone PTMs and variants. MS has been extensively used for the analysis of epigenetic marks in cell lines and animal tissue and, thanks to recent technological advances, is now ready to be applied also to clinical samples. In this review, we will provide an overview on the quantitative MS-based analysis of histones, their PTMs and their variants in cancer clinical samples, highlighting current achievements and future perspectives for this novel field of research. Among the different MS-based approaches currently available for histone PTM profiling, we will focus on the 'bottom-up' strategy, namely the analysis of short proteolytic peptides, as it has been already successfully employed for the analysis of clinical samples.We here report an autopsy case of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with p.Arg487His mutation in the valosin-containing protein (VCP) gene (VCP), in which upper motor neurons (UMNs) were predominantly involved. Moreover, our patient developed symptoms of frontotemporal dementia later in life and pathologically exhibited numerous phosphorylated transactivation response DNA-binding protein of 43 kDa (p-TDP-43)-positive neuronal cytoplasmic inclusions and short dystrophic neurites with a few lentiform neuronal intranuclear inclusions, sharing the features of frontotemporal lobar degeneration with TDP-43 pathology type A pattern. A review of previous reports of ALS with VCP mutations suggests that our case is unique in terms of its UMN-predominant lesion pattern and distribution of p-TDP-43 pathology.     To evaluate glucagon, insulin, ACTH, and cortisol response to fasting and carbohydrate administration in healthy foals.

    Twenty-two healthy Standardbred foals ≤4 days of age.

    Foals were assigned to fasted (n = 6), IV glucose (IVGT; n = 5), PO glucose (OGT; n = 5), and PO lactose (OLT; n = 6) test groups. Blood samples were collected frequently for 210 minutes. The endocrine pancreas and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPAA) are central to energy homeostasis, but information on their dynamics in response to energy challenges in healthy newborn foals is lacking. To evaluate glucagon, insulin, ACTH, and cortisol response to fasting and carbohydrate administration in healthy foals. Twenty-two healthy Standardbred foals ≤4 days of age. Foals were assigned to fasted (n = 6), IV glucose (IVGT; n = 5), PO glucose (OGT; n = 5), and PO lactose (OLT; n = 6) test groups. Blood samples were collected frequently for 210 minutes. Plasma glucagon concentration decreased relative to baseline at 45, 90, and 180 minutes during the OLT (P = .03), but no differences occurred in other test groups. Nursing stimulated marked increases in plasma glucagon, serum insulin, and glucose concentrations in all test groups (P < .001). Plasma ACTH concentration increased relative to baseline at 180 minutes (P < .05) during fasting and OLT, but no differences occurred in other test groups. Serum cortisol concentration increased relative to baseline during OLT at 180 minutes (P = .04), but no differences occurred in other test groups. Nursing resulted in decreased plasma ACTH and serum cortisol concentrations in all test groups (P < .01). The endocrine response to enterally and parenterally administered carbohydrates, including the major endocrine response to nursing, suggests that factors in milk other than carbohydrates are strong stimulators (directly or indirectly) of the endocrine pancreas and HPAA.
