    To examine the relationship between self-care and bimanual performance in children aged 8 to 12 years with cerebral palsy (CP).

    This was a cross-sectional study of 74 children with CP (unilateral n=30, bilateral n=44; 48 males, 26 females; median age 9y 8mo [25th, 75th centiles 9y 1mo, 10y 8mo], Manual Abilities Classification System level I=30, II=28, III=16). The establishment of quality control materials and a quality assurance scheme are recommended to provide reliability. This will ensure that the ETK activity assay remains an important method for the assessment of thiamine status.
    To investigate the effects of electroencephalography (EEG) power and functional connectivity analysis on cerebral cortex function in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), and to identify the neurobiological indicators of neural development in HIE.

    We recruited 20 mild HIE neonates, 15 moderate HIE neonates, and 30 controls. EEG was performed about 72hr after birth. The power spectral density (PSD) and imaginary part of coherency (ICOH) were analyzed. Gesell developmental schedule (GDS) was used to evaluate the neural development in the mild and moderate HIE groups at 1year of age, and the correlation between the quantitative EEG results and the state of neural development was analyzed.

Our protein screen clearly defined two cohorts of putative targets either in the presence of magnesium ions or in metal-free conditions. We endogenously tagged four protein candidates and immunopurified them to assess whether 5-IP7 -driven phosphorylation is conserved in T. cruzi. Among the most interesting targets, we identified a choline/o-acetyltransferase domain-containing phosphoprotein that undergoes 5-IP7 -mediated phosphorylation events at a polyserine tract (Ser578-580 ).     Accurate segmentation of lung and infection in COVID-19 computed tomography (CT) scans plays an important role in the quantitative management of patients. Most of the existing studies are based on large and private annotated datasets that are impractical to obtain from a single institution, especially when radiologists are busy fighting the coronavirus disease. Furthermore, it is hard to compare current COVID-19 CT segmentation methods as they are developed on different datasets, trained in different settings, and evaluated with different metrics.

    To promote the development of data-efficient deep learning methods, in this paper, we built three benchmarks for lung and infection segmentation based on 70 annotated COVID-19 cases, which contain current active research areas, for example, few-shot learning, domain generalization, and knowledge transfer. For a fair comparison among different segmentation methods, we also provide standard training, validation and testing splits, evaluation metrics and, the corresponding code.

  • Gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-based systems have been extensively investigated as diagnostic and therapeutic agents due to their tunable properties and easy surface functionalization. Upon cell uptake, AuNPs present an inherent cell impairment potential based on organelle and macromolecules damage, leading to cell death. Such cytotoxicity is concentration-dependent and completely undesirable, especially if unspecific. However, under non-cytotoxic concentrations, internalized AuNPs could potentially weaken cells and act as antitumor agents. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the antitumor effect of ultrasmall AuNPs (~3 nm) stabilized by the anionic polysaccharide gum arabic (GA-AuNPs). Other than intrinsic cytotoxicity, the focus was downregulation of cancer hallmarks of aggressive tumors, using a highly metastatic model of melanoma. We first demonstrated that GA-AuNPs showed excellent stability under biological environment. Non-cytotoxic concentrations to seven different cell lines, including tumorigenic and non-tumorigenic cells, were determined by standard 2D in vitro assays. Gold concentrations ≤ 2.4 mg L-1 (16.5 nM AuNPs) were non-cytotoxic and therefore chosen for further analyses. Cells exposed to GA-AuNPs were uptaken by melanoma cells through endocytic processes. Next we described remarkable biological properties using non-cytotoxic concentrations of this nanomaterial. Invasion through an extracellular matrix barrier as well as 3D growth capacity (anchorage-independent colony formation and spheroids growth) were negatively affected by 2.4 mg L-1 GA-AuNPs. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/NVP-AUY922.html Additionally, exposed spheroids showed morphological changes, suggesting that GA-AuNPs could penetrate into the preformed tumor and affect its integrity.     The developing field of osteoimmunology supports importance of an interferon (IFN) response pathway in osteoblasts. Clarifying osteoblast-IFN interactions is important because IFN is used as salvage anti-tumor therapy but systemic toxicity is high with variable clinical results. In addition, osteoblast response to systemic bursts and disruptions of IFN pathways induced by viral infection may influence bone remodeling. ZIKA virus (ZIKV) infection impacts bone development in humans and IFN response in vitro. Consistently, initial evidence of permissivity to ZIKV has been reported in human osteoblasts.

    Multiple approaches were used to assess whether Saos-2 cells are permissive to ZIKV infection and exhibit IFN-mediated ZIKV suppression. Proteomic methods were used to evaluate impact of ZIKV and IFN on Saos-2 cells.

Cell labeling using AuNPs and tracking of the labeled cells using CT has become a time-efficient and cost-effective method. Actively targeted AuNPs can enhance CT contrast and sensitivity, and further reduce the radiation dosage needed during CT imaging. In this review, we summarize the state-of-the-art use of AuNPs in CT for cell tracking, including the precautionary steps necessary for their use and the difficulty in translating the process into clinical use.The efficacy of Gold/Zinc and Silver/Zinc vacuum metal deposition (VMD) protocols were assessed as stand-alone methods of fingermark enhancement on ballistic brass materials. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of VMD enhancement on a large pool of donors (n = 20), with potentially identifiable marks recovered for the majority of donors, including samples aged up to two months. Of the 20 donors a subset of six donors were selected to assess the capability of VMD enhancement on brass fired cartridge cases, from which some friction ridge detail (FRD) was recovered. Lastly, an attempt to understand which fingermark components are facilitators of VMD enhancement was made. Fingermark residue was extracted from brass tiles and fired cartridge cases before analysing chromatographically (GC-MS). Although some key components were indicated, further evaluation of all fingermark components is needed to draw firm conclusions as to the role each plays in VMD enhancement.
    Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are important for comprehensive assessment of chronic liver disease (CLD). Latin America and the Caribbean have a high burden of CLD, but PROs are lacking. We assessed health-related quality of life (HRQL) in Cuban patients with compensated CLD.

    A cross sectional study performed of adult patients with a diagnosis of chronic viral infection B and C (HBV, HCV), non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD) and autoimmune liver diseases (AILD) including autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and overlap syndrome (AIH+PBC). PROs were collected using Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-F), Work Productivity and Activity-Specific Health Problem (WPAI SHP), and the Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire (CLDQ)-disease-specific.

    543 patients enrolled, n=91 (HBV), n=188 (HCV), n=221 (NAFLD), n=43 (AILD). Of those with AILD, 22 had AIH, 14 PBC, and 7 overlap AIH/PBC. Mean age was 53.5 years, 64.1% female, 69.2% white, and 58.0% employed.

  • Actinobacteria that inhabit lichen symbionts are considered a promising yet previously underexplored source of novel compounds. Here, for the first time, we conducted a comprehensive investigation with regard to strain isolation and identification of lichen-associated actinobacteria from Tibet Plateau, antimicrobial activity screening, biosynthetic genes detection, bioactive metabolites identification and activity prediction. A large number of culturable actinomycetes were isolated from lichens around Qinghai Lake, in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Twenty-seven strains with distinct morphological characteristics were preliminarily studied. 16S rRNA gene identification showed that 13 strains were new species. The PCR-screening of specific biosynthetic genes indicated that these 27 isolates had abundant intrinsic biosynthetic potential. The antimicrobial activity experiment screened out some potential biological control antagonistic bacteria. The metabolites of 13 strains of Streptomyces with antibacterial activity were analyzed by LC-HRMS, and further 18 compounds were identified by NMR and / or LC-HRMS. The identified compounds were mainly pyrrolidine and indole derivatives, as well as anthracyclines. Seven compounds were identified with less biological activity, then predicted and evaluated their biological activity. The predicted results showed that compound 2 had excellent inhibitory activity on HIV-1 reverse transcriptase. Overall, the results indicate actinobacteria isolated from unexploited plateau lichen are promising sources of biological active metabolite, which could provide important bioactive compounds as potential antibiotic drugs.

However, there remain gaps in our understanding of the fate of infectious faecal pathogens during composting, particularly in tropical climates. This study investigated the influence of different locally available bulking agents on the inactivation efficiency of composting by tracking the fate of four key indicator organisms (E. coli, Salmonella spp., Enterococci spp., and viable helminth eggs). Dewatered FS was mixed with different bulking agents - i.e. Sawdust (SD), Coffee husks (CH) and Brewery waste (BW). Compost piles of FSSD, FSCH, and FSBW in a volumetric ratio of 12 were set-up in duplicate (3 m3 each), composted on a pilot scale and monitored weekly for the survival of pathogen indicators for a period of 15 weeks. The study findings suggest that the different bulking agents have a statistically significant (p less then 0.05) effect on the temperature evolution and survival of pathogen indicators in compost. CH was the most suitable bulking agent for composting with FS as piles containing CH exhibited higher pathogen inactivation efficiency and shorter inactivation periods of 6 weeks compared to 8 weeks for SD and BW piles. Time-temperature was the most important factor responsible for pathogen inactivation. However, other mechanisms such as indigenous microbial and toxic by-products such as NH4+-N also played an important role in the inactivation of pathogens. The results suggest that co-composting of FS with a sawdust, coffee husk or brewery waste for 8 weeks with thermophilic temperatures of about 48-60 °C sustained in the composting piles for more than 38 days, using 7 days turning frequency, is sufficient to ensure complete sanitization of FS before reuse in agriculture.
    Actinobacteria that inhabit lichen symbionts are considered a promising yet previously underexplored source of novel compounds. Here, for the first time, we conducted a comprehensive investigation with regard to strain isolation and identification of lichen-associated actinobacteria from Tibet Plateau, antimicrobial activity screening, biosynthetic genes detection, bioactive metabolites identification and activity prediction. A large number of culturable actinomycetes were isolated from lichens around Qinghai Lake, in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Twenty-seven strains with distinct morphological characteristics were preliminarily studied. 16S rRNA gene identification showed that 13 strains were new species. The PCR-screening of specific biosynthetic genes indicated that these 27 isolates had abundant intrinsic biosynthetic potential. The antimicrobial activity experiment screened out some potential biological control antagonistic bacteria. The metabolites of 13 strains of Streptomyces with antibacterial activity were analyzed by LC-HRMS, and further 18 compounds were identified by NMR and / or LC-HRMS. The identified compounds were mainly pyrrolidine and indole derivatives, as well as anthracyclines. Seven compounds were identified with less biological activity, then predicted and evaluated their biological activity. The predicted results showed that compound 2 had excellent inhibitory activity on HIV-1 reverse transcriptase.   • Implementation of an ERP for colorectal surgery was associated with lower variable costs compared to pre-ERP.The combined contribution to highway safety of pavement surface and geometric design indicators is not well investigated due to the complexity of data collection and high time variability of pavement surface conditions. Introduction of high efficiency equipment for comprehensive road surveys is mitigating this issue, expanding possibilities of data integration. In this framework, the present study developed crash modification functions (CMFs) of pavement surface and geometric design indicators for different crash types (total, run-off-the-road, and others), pavement conditions (dry and wet), and lighting conditions (daytime and nighttime) based on data from two-lane rural highways in Italy. Geometric and pavement data were surveyed with the Automatic Road Analyzer and the Grip Tester. Pavement surface condition data were corrected to the crash time by pavement performance deterioration models based on traffic load to account for the variation in pavement conditions over time. Crash, traffic and weather data wially when wet, run-off-the-road or nighttime crashes are overrepresented. Study results allow to effectively integrate pavement management systems and safety management systems. When developing paving schedules, transportation agencies often base their decisions on asset management condition targets but do not explicitly account for the role of pavement conditions in highway safety. Availability of CMFs for both pavement surface parameters as well as geometric design parameters is crucial to improve pavement and geometric characteristics considering their safety effects.Nonsurgical rhinoplasty is one choice for cases in which open surgery may be harmful, the deformity is not indicated to correct with open surgery, or in patients who have phobia of general anesthesia or any type of surgery. Similarly, fluorine-18-radiolabeled fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography combined to computed tomography (18F-FDG-PET/CT) can be useful in this setting, either as a first-line diagnostic technique, or in addition to cross-sectional imaging. In this article, which is thought as an aid for nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists, we aim to present, based on the ITMIG classification, the main mediastinal pathologies that can be observed with 18F-FDG-PET/CT, and the additional diagnostic value that can be expected from this technique. For this purpose, we segmented the mediastinum according to the ITMIG classification, and reviewed the available literature for each of the corresponding organs and/or disease. Given the importance of the clinical context for the interpretation of PET imaging, we presented each of the diseases according to (1) their suggestive clinical context; (2) the suggestive features on nonenhanced CT (which is the standard in PET imaging); and (3) the typical 18F-FDG characteristics. The purpose of this article is to depict the main features of the most common mediastinal diseases that can be encountered with 18F-FDG-PET/CT, and to highlight its diagnostic value in this setting, alone or in combination with other imaging modalities.

  • We discuss how the capacity of a population to cope with multiple stressors may be underestimated unless both sexes are considered simultaneously.Bees rely on floral pollen and nectar for food. Therefore, pollinator friendly plantings are often used to enrich habitats in bee conservation efforts. As part of these plantings, non-native plants may provide valuable floral resources, but their effects on native bee communities have not been assessed in direct comparison with native pollinator friendly plantings. In this study, we performed a common garden experiment by seeding mixes of 20 native and 20 non-native pollinator friendly plant species at separate neighboring plots at three sites in Maryland, USA, and recorded flower visitors for 2 years. A total of 3,744 bees (120 species) were collected. Bee abundance and species richness were either similar across plant types (midseason and for abundance also late season) or lower at native than at non-native plots (early season and for richness also late season). The overall bee community composition differed significantly between native and non-native plots, with 11 and 23 bee species being found exclusively at one plot type or the other, respectively. Additionally, some species were more abundant at native plant plots, while others were more abundant at non-natives. Native plants hosted more specialized plant-bee visitation networks than non-native plants. Three species out of the five most abundant bee species were more specialized when foraging on native plants than on non-native plants. Overall, visitation networks were more specialized in the early season than in late seasons. Our findings suggest that non-native plants can benefit native pollinators, but may alter foraging patterns, bee community assemblage, and bee-plant network structures.The Omei wood frog (Rana omeimontis), endemic to central China, belongs to the family Ranidae. In this study, we achieved detail knowledge about the mitogenome of the species. The length of the genome is 20,120 bp, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes, and a noncoding control region. Similar to other amphibians, we found that only nine genes (ND6 and eight tRNA genes) are encoded on the light strand (L) and other genes on the heavy strand (H). Totally, The base composition of the mitochondrial genome included 27.29% A, 28.85% T, 28.87% C, and 15.00% G, respectively. The control regions among the Rana species were found to exhibit rich genetic variability and A + T content. R. omeimontis was clustered together with R. chaochiaoensis in phylogenetic tree. One of the most conspicuous traits in butterflies is their wing color pattern, which has been shown to be important in speciation. The evolution of many taxa in the Neotropics has also been influenced by major geological events. Using a dated, species-level molecular phylogenetic hypothesis for Preponini, a colorful Neotropical butterfly tribe, we evaluated whether diversification rates were constant or varied through time, and how they were influenced by color pattern evolution and biogeographical events. We found that Preponini originated approximately 28 million years ago and that diversification has increased through time consistent with major periods of Andean uplift. Even though some clades show evolutionarily rapid transitions in coloration, contrary to our expectations, these shifts were not correlated with shifts in diversification. Involvement in mimicry with other butterfly groups might explain the rapid changes in dorsal color patterns in this tribe, but such changes have not increased species diversification in this group. However, we found evidence for an influence of major Miocene and Pliocene geological events on the tribe's evolution. Preponini apparently originated within South America, and range evolution has since been dynamic, congruent with Andean geologic activity, closure of the Panama Isthmus, and Miocene climate variability.The absence of some species from small habitat patches has long posed a challenge for conservationists, yet the underlying mechanisms that cause this "area-sensitivity" remain poorly understood. Capacity of a species to extend their activities into the surrounding matrix habitat represents one potential determinant of area-sensitivity. Species may be able to occupy smaller patches if they can utilize matrix habitat beyond patch boundaries, whereas area-sensitive species may be restricted to larger patches due to their inability to utilize the surrounding matrix. We investigated the potential role of matrix utilization in determining area-sensitivity by mapping the movements of two shrubland-obligate passerines with contrasting patch area requirements in shrub-dominated forest openings ranging in area by nearly an order of magnitude. Our findings were consistent with our predictions; the less area-sensitive chestnut-sided warbler (Setophaga pensylvanica) exhibited greater use of matrix habitat than the highly area-sensitive prairie warbler (S. discolor). Furthermore, chestnut-sided warblers that occupied smaller openings used mature forest more than conspecifics in larger patches, yet forest use by prairie warblers was unrelated to opening size. Chestnut-sided warblers foraged as frequently in mature forest as within shrubland, whereas prairie warblers foraged significantly more in openings compared to forest. The findings of this study suggest that the ability or inclination of a species to utilize surrounding matrix habitat explains at least some of the observed variation in area-sensitivity in songbirds and potentially other taxa.
    We discuss how the capacity of a population to cope with multiple stressors may be underestimated unless both sexes are considered simultaneously.Bees rely on floral pollen and nectar for food. Therefore, pollinator friendly plantings are often used to enrich habitats in bee conservation efforts. As part of these plantings, non-native plants may provide valuable floral resources, but their effects on native bee communities have not been assessed in direct comparison with native pollinator friendly plantings. In this study, we performed a common garden experiment by seeding mixes of 20 native and 20 non-native pollinator friendly plant species at separate neighboring plots at three sites in Maryland, USA, and recorded flower visitors for 2 years. A total of 3,744 bees (120 species) were collected. Bee abundance and species richness were either similar across plant types (midseason and for abundance also late season) or lower at native than at non-native plots (early season and for richness also late season). The overall bee community composition differed significantly between native and non-native plots, with 11 and 23 bee species being found exclusively at one plot type or the other, respectively. Additionally, some species were more abundant at native plant plots, while others were more abundant at non-natives. Native plants hosted more specialized plant-bee visitation networks than non-native plants. Three species out of the five most abundant bee species were more specialized when foraging on native plants than on non-native plants. Overall, visitation networks were more specialized in the early season than in late seasons. Our findings suggest that non-native plants can benefit native pollinators, but may alter foraging patterns, bee community assemblage, and bee-plant network structures.The Omei wood frog (Rana omeimontis), endemic to central China, belongs to the family Ranidae. In this study, we achieved detail knowledge about the mitogenome of the species. The length of the genome is 20,120 bp, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes, and a noncoding control region. Similar to other amphibians, we found that only nine genes (ND6 and eight tRNA genes) are encoded on the light strand (L) and other genes on the heavy strand (H). The evolution of many taxa in the Neotropics has also been influenced by major geological events. Using a dated, species-level molecular phylogenetic hypothesis for Preponini, a colorful Neotropical butterfly tribe, we evaluated whether diversification rates were constant or varied through time, and how they were influenced by color pattern evolution and biogeographical events. We found that Preponini originated approximately 28 million years ago and that diversification has increased through time consistent with major periods of Andean uplift. Even though some clades show evolutionarily rapid transitions in coloration, contrary to our expectations, these shifts were not correlated with shifts in diversification. Involvement in mimicry with other butterfly groups might explain the rapid changes in dorsal color patterns in this tribe, but such changes have not increased species diversification in this group. However, we found evidence for an influence of major Miocene and Pliocene geological events on the tribe's evolution. We investigated the potential role of matrix utilization in determining area-sensitivity by mapping the movements of two shrubland-obligate passerines with contrasting patch area requirements in shrub-dominated forest openings ranging in area by nearly an order of magnitude. Our findings were consistent with our predictions; the less area-sensitive chestnut-sided warbler (Setophaga pensylvanica) exhibited greater use of matrix habitat than the highly area-sensitive prairie warbler (S. discolor). Furthermore, chestnut-sided warblers that occupied smaller openings used mature forest more than conspecifics in larger patches, yet forest use by prairie warblers was unrelated to opening size. Chestnut-sided warblers foraged as frequently in mature forest as within shrubland, whereas prairie warblers foraged significantly more in openings compared to forest. The findings of this study suggest that the ability or inclination of a species to utilize surrounding matrix habitat explains at least some of the observed variation in area-sensitivity in songbirds and potentially other taxa.

The virtual rotations that the authors participated in allowed for active participation in various resident educational activities such as journal club, grand rounds, and morning conferences. One critical aspect of virtual rotations was the one-on-one meetings with the program leadership. In addition to a virtual tour of the hospital and campus, many programs offered virtual social hours with the residents to converse about the program, the city, and the match process. A few programs even allowed applicants to attend virtually live-streamed surgeries. These rotations offer students, especially those without a corresponding home program, an invaluable opportunity to express their interest in a particular program and gain foundational knowledge about the specialty. Virtual rotations also provide underrepresented minorities and international medical graduates with clinical exposure, mentorship, and networking opportunities, mitigating some of the challenges presented by COVID-19.

    In this monocentric retrospective study, the number and the characteristics of patients received for a first consultation for a breast or gynecologic tumor were compared between the containment period and a control period. The times from diagnosis to treatment and the type of initial care were compared too.

    During the outbreak, 91patients were seen for a new request, versus 159during the control period, a decrease of 43.5%. Patients were older (62.9versus 60.9years old) but this difference was not significant. Tumor stage was not modified. We describe the use of 3D augmented reality software combined with 3D printed models to assess the anatomy of difficult airways and to assist in the formulation of the most optimal airway management strategy in such patients. The reported patients had computed tomograms (CT) of the neck prior to their anaesthetic and surgical management. DICOM files of the respective scans were imported to 3D rendering software (OsiriX, Pixmeo). We constructed volume rendered models for initial assessment of the airway then generated serial surface rendered models to create a virtual endoscopic path of the airway to simulate the fibreoptic approach. To further facilitate the study of difficult airways we have subsequently printed 3D models of those that were most difficult using rapid prototyping. Head and neck tumours significantly distort the airway. Thorough study of the relevant anatomy prior to airway management for operating reasons enhances communication between the surgeon and anaesthetist, and aids selection of the most appropriate intubation approach. In conclusion, this paper highlights a useful and novel pre-assessment strategy that allows a virtual, visual, 3-dimensional assessment of the airway anatomy combined with 3D modelling and 3D printing.   • Dietary patterns are well known risk factors involved in cancer initiation, progression, and in cancer protection. Previous in vitro and in vivo studies underline the link between a diet rich in resistant starch (RS) and slowing of tumor growth and gene expression in pancreatic cancer xenograft ****. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of a diet rich in resistant starch on miRNAs and miRNAs-target genes expression profile and on biological processes and pathways, that play a critical role in pancreatic tumors of xenografted ****. miRNA expression profiles on tumor tissues displayed 19 miRNAs as dysregulated in **** fed with RS diet as compared to those fed with control diet and differentially expressed miRNA-target genes were predicted by integrating (our data) with a public human pancreatic cancer gene expression dataset (GSE16515). Functional and pathway enrichment analyses unveiled that miRNAs involved in RS diet are critical regulators of genes that control tumor growth and cell migration and metastasis, inflammatory response, and, as expected, synthesis of carbohydrate and glucose metabolism disorder. Mostly, overall survival analysis with clinical data from TCGA (n = 175) displayed that almost four miRNAs (miRNA-375, miRNA-148a-3p, miRNA-125a-5p, and miRNA-200a-3p) upregulated in tumors from **** fed with RS were a predictor of good prognosis for pancreatic cancer patients. These findings contribute to the understanding of the potential mechanisms through which resistant starch may affect cancer progression, suggesting also a possible integrative approach for enhancing the efficacy of existing cancer treatments.This study investigated the effects of different citric acid content on the physico-mechanical and biological durability of rubberwood particleboard. Particleboards with density of 700 kg/m3 were produced with three different citric acid contents, namely 10, 15 and 20 wt%. Particleboards made from 10 wt% urea formaldehyde (UF) resin were served as control for comparison purposes. FTIR analysis was carried out and the formation of ester linkages between -OH on cellulose and carbonyl groups of citric acid was confirmed. The peak intensity increased along with increasing citric content, which indicated that a higher amount of ester linkages were formed at higher citric acid content. Citric acid-bonded particleboard had inferior physical properties (water absorption and thickness swelling) and mechanical properties (internal bonding strength, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity) compared to that of the UF-bonded particleboard. However, the performance of particleboard was enhanced with increasing citric acid content. Meanwhile, citric acid-bonded particleboard displayed significantly better fungal and termite resistance than UF-bonded particleboard owing to the acidic nature of citric acid. It can be concluded that citric acid is a suitable green binder for particleboard but some improvement is needed during the particleboard production process.Most studies consider entrepreneurship in Chinese a happier career choice, while the adverse effects of entrepreneurship on wellbeing have been overlooked. Job-related wellbeing is regarded as consisting of job satisfaction, subjective wellbeing, and physical wellbeing. The data were obtained using the Chinese Labor-Force Dynamic Survey, and the sample consisted of 6108 employees and 2075 entrepreneurs from 29 provinces and cities in China. T-test, chi square test, and ordinal logistic regression were conducted. The analysis in the first section reveals significant differences in job-related wellbeing between employees and entrepreneurs along with differences in autonomy and perceived equity. Entrepreneurs are found to be less satisfied and unhappier than employees. The heterogeneity of the motives for entrepreneurship is highlighted in the second part, and its significant role in the wellbeing of entrepreneurs is explored. Subsistence entrepreneurs have been found to constitute up to 64% of all entrepreneurs. In field conditions, the biorational insecticides produced similar or better control than Emacot 19 EC. However, the highest maize grain yields of 7387 and 5308 kg/ha were recorded, respectively, with Dezone (N'Dali) and Emacot 19 EC (Adjohoun). A cost-benefit analysis showed that, compared to an untreated control, profits increased by up to 90% with the biorational insecticides and 166% with Emacot 19 EC. Therefore, the use of Palmida soap at 0.5% concentration, neem oil at 4.5 L/ha, and Dezone at 7.5 kg/ha could provide an effective, environmentally friendly, and sustainable management of S. frugiperda in maize.

  • The term 'bacteriophage' (devourer of bacteria) was coined by Félix d'Herelle in 1917 to describe both the phenomenon of spontaneous destruction of bacterial cultures and an agent responsible. Debates about the nature of bacteriophages raged in the 1920s and 1930s, and there were extensive attempts to use the phenomenon to fight infections. Whereas it eventually became a crucial tool for molecular biology, therapeutic uses of 'phage' declined sharply in the West after World War II, but persisted in the Soviet Union, particularly Georgia. Increasingly isolated from Western medical research, Soviet scientists developed their own metaphors of 'phage', its nature and action, and communicated them to their peers, medical professionals, and potential patients. In this article, I explore four kinds of narrative that shaped Soviet phage research the mystique of bacteriophages in the 1920s and 1930s; animated accounts and military metaphors in the 1940s; Lysenkoist notions on bacteriophages as a phase in bacterial development; and the retrospective allocation of credit for the discovery of the bacteriophage during the Cold War. Whereas viruses have been largely seen as barely living, phage narratives consistently featured heroic liveliness or 'animacy', which framed the growing consensus on its viral nature. Post-war narratives, shaped by the Lysenkoist movement and the campaigns against adulation of the West, had political power-although many microbiologists remained sceptical, they had to frame their critique within the correct language if they wanted to be published. The dramatic story of bacteriophage research in the Soviet Union is a reminder of the extent to which scientific narratives can be shaped by politics, but it also highlights the diversity of strategies and alternative interpretations possible within those constraints.Vladimir Sertić was a pioneer of bacteriophage research in the period between the two world wars. He was born and educated in Croatia, where he made his initial discoveries, and joined Félix d'Herelle's Laboratoire du ****ériophage in Paris in 1928. Original documents and a box with hundreds of sealed bacteriophages samples were kept in Sertić's Zagreb home for decades. Following Vladimir's death, his sister passed this archival material to Professor Zdravko Lacković in 1989. Some years later, these artefacts were opened and studied. Additionally, we conducted a literature search using the term 'Vladimir Sertić' in the databases PubMed and Google Scholar. After a detailed examination of these data, we established a chronology of his work and compiled a list of his scientific publications. A complete bibliography, with the exception of those publications already cited here, is provided as an appendix. Sertić's key contributions included the exploration of the properties of phage lysins, the devising of a uniform bacteriophage classification system and, in collaboration with his protégé, Nikolai Boulgakov, the isolation of numerous bacteriophage strains, including the famous φX174. Finally it was Sertić's pioneering work in Zagreb that offered confirmation that phages are live agents.A novel method for facile postpolymerization functionalization of synthetic polymers using terminal norbornadiene (NBD) building blocks is presented. Incorporation of the NBD functionality streamlines the synthesis of a wide array of block polymers utilizing multistep click chemistry strategies. Previously, the use of NBD-functionalized initiators produced polymers that underwent a cascade of Diels-Alder (DA) reactions to unveil a reactive cyclopentadiene (Cp) chain end. When coupled with a maleimide-bearing counterpart, a highly efficient DA cycloaddition with the terminal Cp can occur. To extend this concept to a range of polyacrylates and commercially available poly(ethylene glycol) systems, we developed a novel NBD acid building block for postpolymerization functionalization. Employing this process, we have demonstrated straightforward access to a library of block polymers that leverage this NBD click platform.This is a review of the clinical and histopathological published data on very rare heterotopic acinic cell carcinomas (AcCCs) with suggested optimal management. Extrasalivary AcCCs originate primarily in parotid lymph nodes. They present at low clinical stage, show mostly low-grade histopathology and are circumscribed with a complete nodal capsule. Longer term follow-up is essential.To explore the perioperative nursing methods of treating femoral head necrosis with autologous stem cells, 5 cases of femoral head necrosis were selected, one case of bilateral and 4 cases of single femoral head necrosis. Five patients underwent stem cell transplantation. Harris score, VAS score, and imaging examination were used to observe the nursing effect of autologous stem cells in the treatment of femoral head necrosis. The results showed that the pain of the patients was alleviated and the score of hip joint function was improved significantly after the treatment. There were no complications in the monitoring period after the treatment proving that the transplantation of autologous stem cells had a good therapeutic effect.To explore the value of prenatal ultrasound in the diagnosis of twin pregnancy with foetal heart malformation, 30 foetuses with congenital heart disease of twin pregnancy who were 19-37 weeks between July 2016 and January 2018 were selected for prenatal ultrasound examination. The prenatal ultrasound was carried out and the data were collected and analyzed statistically. The results showed that there were 11 cases of ventricular septal defect (VSD), 3 cases of endocardial cushion defect, 3 cases of left cardiac dysplasia, 4 cases of right ventricular double outlet, 5 cases of aortic stenosis, 2 cases of tetralogy of Fallot, and 2 cases of aortic disconnection. It was found that VSD had the highest detection rate amongst foetal congenital heart disease. Therefore, prenatal ultrasound is the most effective method to diagnose foetal congenital heart disease.

  • People with persistently asymptomatic severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection experience no symptoms throughout the course of infection, and pre-symptomatic individuals become infectious days before they report symptoms. Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from individuals without symptoms contributes to pandemic spread, but the extent of transmission from persistently asymptomatic individuals remains unknown. We describe three methodological issues that hinder attempts to estimate this proportion. First, incomplete symptom assessment probably overestimates the asymptomatic fraction. Second, studies with inadequate follow-up misclassify pre-symptomatic individuals. Third, serological studies might identify people with previously unrecognised infection, but reliance on poorly defined antibody responses and retrospective symptom assessment might result in misclassification. We provide recommendations regarding definitions, detection, documentation, and follow-up to improve the identification and evaluation of people with persistently asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection and their contacts. Accurate characterisation of the persistently asymptomatic fraction of infected individuals might shed light on COVID-19 pathogenesis and transmission dynamics, and inform public health responses.
    Countries have restricted international arrivals to delay the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). These measures carry a high economic and social cost, and might have little effect on COVID-19 epidemics if there are many more cases resulting from local transmission compared with imported cases. Our study aims to investigate the extent to which imported cases contribute to local transmission under different epidemic conditions.

    To inform decisions about international travel restrictions, we calculated the ratio of expected COVID-19 cases from international travel (assuming no travel restrictions) to expected cases arising from internal spread, expressed as a proportion, on an average day in May and September, 2020, in each country.
