Danjiangkou Reservoir is the biggest artificial reservoir in China. But spatiotemporal distribution and risks of metal(loid)s in it were still unclear after the operation of Middle Route of South-to-North Water Diversion Project. In this study, distribution pattern of fifteen metal(loid)s in the Danjiangkou Reservoir was investigated. Additionally, source identification showed agricultural activities (25.3%), industrial and mining activities (17.5%) and natural processes (57.2%) were the dominant sources of metal(loid)s burden in the sediments. Overall, the results are of significance to understanding the ecological risk and pollution sources in the Danjiangkou Reservoir, which is essential for the effective management of metal(loid)s pollution.This study investigates the use of structural and discourse contextual cues in the interpretation of third-person pronouns by children and adolescents with autism and their neurotypical peers. The median age was 69.0 years (55-79), and all were males. The median follow-up period was 66.6 months (8-121). All patients had localized disease; four patients had tumors of the ocular adnexa, whereas two had retroperitoneal tumors. Five patients were treated with irradiation (30 Gy/15 fr) (n = 4) or surgery (n = 1), resulting in tumor reduction. Two patients were treated by chemotherapy or irradiation. Among them, one commenced rituximab monotherapy, which led to an inadequate reduction of the tumor. Subsequent irradiation induced complete response (CR). The other patient experienced repeated relapses during follow-up and finally achieved CR by combination chemotherapy. Treatment was well tolerated in all cases, and none of the patients showed disease progression at the last follow-up visit. Our results indicate that the standard treatments for MZLs are generally appropriate for IgG4-producing MZL.

Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes are compounds of great interest in cancer therapy due to their unique photophysical, photochemical, and biological properties. For effective treatment, they must be able to penetrate tumor cells effectively and selectively. The development of nanoscale carriers capable of delivering Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes has the potential to passively or selectively enhance their cellular uptake in tumor cells. Many different strategies have been explored to incorporate Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes into a variety of nanosized constructs, ranging from organic to inorganic materials. Herein, recent developments in nanomaterials loaded with Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes are highlighted. Their rational design, preparation, and physicochemical properties are described, and their potential applications in cancer therapy are eventually discussed.
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted numerous facets of healthcare workers' lives. There have also been significant changes in Gastroenterology (GI) fellowship training as a result of the challenges presented by the pandemic.
We conducted a national survey of Gastroenterology fellows to evaluate fellows' perceptions, changes in clinical duties, and education during the pandemic.
A survey was sent to Gastroenterology (GI) fellows in the USA. Information regarding redeployment, fellow restriction in endoscopy, outpatient clinics and inpatient consults, impact on educational activities, and available wellness resources was obtained. Fellows' level of agreement with adjustments to clinical duties was also assessed.

Maternal fat distribution is suggested to be a better predictor than BMI of obesity-related adverse pregnancy outcomes, with central adiposity posing a greater risk than peripheral subcutaneous fat. With this study, we aimed to systematically review the evidence of what impact maternal central adiposity in early to mid-pregnancy or at most 365 days prior to conception has on infant anthropometry and perinatal morbidity. The databases PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science Core Collection, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Clinical Trials, and Open Grey were seaction. There is also some evidence of associations between central adiposity and preterm delivery ( less then 37 weeks of gestation), and admission to neonatal intensive care unit. A meta-analysis was not possible to perform due to substantial heterogeneity among the included studies regarding the exposure, outcome, and statistical methods used. Hence, central adiposity in early to mid-pregnancy or at most 365 days prior to conception could be a possible risk marker in addition to BMI for risk stratification of pregnant women. However, since the topic is only scarcely researched, and the results not unanimous, more studies are needed to further clarify the associations between maternal central adiposity and adverse neonatal complications, before any altered recommendations of guidelines could be made. To enable a future meta-analysis, studies using similar methods for central adiposity assessment,and similar outcome measures, are required.Sulfide solid electrolytes (SEs) with high Li-ion conductivities (σion) and soft mechanical properties have limited applications in wet casting processes for commercial all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) because of their inherent atmospheric and chemical instabilities. In this study, we fabricated sulfide SEs with a novel core-shell structure via environmental mechanical alloying, while providing sufficient control of the partial pressure of oxygen. This powder possesses notable atmospheric stability and chemical resistance because it is covered with a stable oxysulfide nanolayer that prevents deterioration of the bulk region. The core-shell SEs showed a σion of more than 2.50 mS cm-1 after air exposure (for 30 min) and reaction with slurry chemicals (mixing and drying for 31 min), which was approximately 82.8% of the initial σion. The ASSB cell fabricated through wet casting provided an initial discharge capacity of 125.6 mAh g-1. The core-shell SEs thus exhibited improved powder stability and reliability in the presence of chemicals used in various wet casting processes for commercial ASSBs.Glycogen storage disease type II (also known as Pompe disease (PD)) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by defects in α-glucosidase (AαGlu), resulting in lysosomal glycogen accumulation in skeletal and heart muscles. Newborn screening (NBS) is the optimal approach for early diagnosis and treatment of PD. In NBS for PD, measurement of AαGlu enzyme activity in dried blood spots (DBSs) is conducted using fluorometry, tandem mass spectrometry, or digital microfluidic fluorometry. The presence of pseudodeficiency alleles, which are frequent in Asian populations, interferes with NBS for PD, and current NBS systems cannot discriminate between pseudodeficiency and cases with PD or potential PD.

Patients assigned to the former will receive PCD when they show signs of decompensation like new-onset OF, aggravation of pre-existent OF, and persistent OF for more than a week. Strikingly, the TPC1 family followed the same conservative evolutionary path as one particular subfamily of Shaker channels (Kout) and remained highly invariant after terrestrialisation, suggesting that electrical signalling was, and remains, key to survival on land. We note that phylogenetic analyses can have pitfalls, which may lead to erroneous conclusions. To avoid these in the future, we suggest guidelines for analyses of ion channel evolution in plants.The neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) is suggested to exert a pivotal role in a variety of complex human behaviors, including trust, attachment, social perception and fear regulation. Previous studies have demonstrated that intranasal administration of OT reduces subjective and neuroendocrine stress responses and dampens amygdala reactivity. OT has also been proposed to modulate activity of the autonomic nervous system. Here, a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled study (with parallel design) was conducted with 56 healthy adult men to investigate whether a single-dose of OT (24 IU) modulates sympathetic autonomic arousal upon live dyadic gaze interactions. To do so, electrodermal recordings of skin conductance were performed during the engagement of eye contact with a live model in a two-person social context. In accordance to prior research, direct eye gaze elicited a significant enhancement in skin conductance responses, but OT did not specifically enhance or dampen the overall magnitude (amplitude) of the skin conductance response. Administration of OT did facilitate the recovery of skin conductance responses **** to baseline (reduced recovery time), indicating a role of OT in restoring homeostatic balance. Notably, the treatment-effect on autonomic recovery was most prominent in participants with low self-reported social responsiveness, indicating that person-dependent factors play an important role in determining OT treatment-responses. Exploratory, it was shown that OT also significantly reduced self-reported feelings of tension and (at trend-level) worrying about how one presents oneself. To do so, electrodermal recordings of skin conductance were performed during the engagement of eye contact with a live model in a two-person social context. In accordance to prior research, direct eye gaze elicited a significant enhancement in skin conductance responses, but OT did not specifically enhance or dampen the overall magnitude (amplitude) of the skin conductance response. Administration of OT did facilitate the recovery of skin conductance responses back to baseline (reduced recovery time), indicating a role of OT in restoring homeostatic balance. Notably, the treatment-effect on autonomic recovery was most prominent in participants with low self-reported social responsiveness, indicating that person-dependent factors play an important role in determining OT treatment-responses. Light-based 3D printing techniques could be a valuable instrument in the development of customized and affordable biomedical devices, basically for high precision and high flexibility in terms of materials of these technologies. However, more studies related to the biocompatibility of the printed objects are required to expand the use of these techniques in the health sector. In this work, 3D printed polymeric parts are produced in lab conditions using a commercial Digital Light Processing (DLP) 3D printer and then successfully tested to fabricate components suitable for biological studies. For this purpose, different 3D printable formulations based on commercially available resins are compared. The biocompatibility of the 3D printed objects toward A549 cell line is investigated by adjusting the composition of the resins and optimizing post-printing protocols; those include washing in common solvents and UV post-curing treatments for removing unreacted and cytotoxic products. It is noteworthy that not only the selection of suitable materials but also the development of an adequate post-printing protocol is necessary for the development of biocompatible devices.The psyllids Cacopsylla melanoneura and Cacopsylla picta reproduce on apple (Malus × domestica) and transmit the bacterium 'Candidatus Phytoplasma mali', the causative agent of apple proliferation. Adult psyllids were collected by the beating-tray method from lower and upper parts of the apple tree canopy in the morning and in the afternoon. There was a trend of catching more emigrant adults of C.melanoneura in the morning and in the lower part of the canopy. For C.melanoneura remigrants, no differences were observed. The findings regarding the distribution of adults were reflected by the number of nymphs collected by wash-down sampling. The density of C.picta was too low for a statistical analysis. The vector monitoring and how it is commonly performed, is suitable for estimating densities of C.melanoneura. Nevertheless, above a certain temperature threshold, prediction of C.melanoneura density might be skewed. No evidence was found that other relatively abundant psyllid species in the orchard, viz. Baeopelma colorata, Cacopsylla breviantennata, Cacopsylla brunneipennis, Cacopsylla pruni and Trioza urticae, were involved in 'Candidatus Phytoplasma mali' transmission. The results of our study contribute to an advanced understanding of insect vector behavior and thus have a practical impact for an improved field monitoring.The phase relationships of the ternary Co-Ni-In system at 673 K and 873 K were investigated by means of powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and optical microscopy. Though CoIn2 does not exist at 873 K, the ternary solid solution Co1-xNixIn2 exists at both 673 K and 873 K with different composition ranges. The Rietveld refinements were carried out to investigate the crystal structure of Co1-xNixIn2 (x = 0.540, and 0.580) and Ni2-xCoxIn3 (x = 0.200). The magnetization dependence of temperature (MT) curves of Ni2-xCoxIn3 (x = 0.200) and Co1-xNixIn2 (x = 0.540) are similar to those of the ferromagnetic shape memory alloys Ni-Mn-A (A = Ga, Sn, and In), but do not undergo martensitic transformation. The maximum magnetic entropy changes in Ni2-xCoxIn3 (x = 0.200) and Co1-xNixIn2 (x = 0.540) under 3T are 1.25 and 1.475 J kg-1K-1, respectively.The growth of industrialization, which is forced to use non-renewable energy sources, leads to an increase in environmental pollution. Therefore, it is necessary not only to reduce the use of fossil fuels to meet energy needs but also to replace it with cleaner fuels. Production of hydrogen by splitting water is considered one of the most promising ways to use solar energy. TiO2 is an amphoteric oxide that occurs naturally in several modifications. This review summarizes recent advances of doped TiO2-based photocatalysts used in hydrogen production and the degradation of organic pollutants in water. An intense scientific and practical interest in these processes is aroused by the fact that they aim to solve global problems of energy conservation and ecology.Loss of muscle mass and strength are progressing with aging. Exercise is a beneficial method to prevent physical dysfunction, and habitual exercise can improve the muscle quality. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of long-term habitual exercise's impact on sarcopenia utilizing the senescence-accelerated **** prone8 (SAMP8) model. Notably, 27 w SAMP8 were used in this study. **** were classified into 28 (28 w) and 44 weeks old. The 44-week group was divided into the sedentary group (44 w) and a group exercising for 16 weeks (44 w + Ex). The 44 w + Ex performed habitual exercise from 28 to 44 weeks. Additionally, grip strength tests were performed with **** aged 28 and 44 weeks. Muscles were harvested and measured muscle weight at 44 w. The response to treatment with calcitriol and calcidiol alone was specific for each cell line. Nevertheless, we observed an enhanced effect of combined treatment with ATRA and calcitriol in the majority of the cell lines. Although the levels of respective nuclear receptors did not correlate with the sensitivity of cells to these drugs, vitamin D receptor (VDR) upregulation induced by ATRA was found in cell lines that were the most sensitive to the combined treatment. In addition, all these cell lines showed high endogenous levels of retinoic acid receptor α (RARα). Our study confirmed that the combination of calcitriol and ATRA can achieve enhanced antiproliferative effects in human osteosarcoma cell lines in vitro. Moreover, we provide the first evidence that ATRA is able to upregulate VDR expression in human osteosarcoma cells.

Our study confirmed that the combination of calcitriol and ATRA can achieve enhanced antiproliferative effects in human osteosarcoma cell lines in vitro. Light-based 3D printing techniques could be a valuable instrument in the development of customized and affordable biomedical devices, basically for high precision and high flexibility in terms of materials of these technologies. However, more studies related to the biocompatibility of the printed objects are required to expand the use of these techniques in the health sector. In this work, 3D printed polymeric parts are produced in lab conditions using a commercial Digital Light Processing (DLP) 3D printer and then successfully tested to fabricate components suitable for biological studies. For this purpose, different 3D printable formulations based on commercially available resins are compared. The biocompatibility of the 3D printed objects toward A549 cell line is investigated by adjusting the composition of the resins and optimizing post-printing protocols; those include washing in common solvents and UV post-curing treatments for removing unreacted and cytotoxic products. It is noteworthy that not only the selection of suitable materials but also the development of an adequate post-printing protocol is necessary for the development of biocompatible devices.The psyllids Cacopsylla melanoneura and Cacopsylla picta reproduce on apple (Malus × domestica) and transmit the bacterium 'Candidatus Phytoplasma mali', the causative agent of apple proliferation. Adult psyllids were collected by the beating-tray method from lower and upper parts of the apple tree canopy in the morning and in the afternoon. There was a trend of catching more emigrant adults of C.melanoneura in the morning and in the lower part of the canopy. For C.melanoneura remigrants, no differences were observed. The findings regarding the distribution of adults were reflected by the number of nymphs collected by wash-down sampling. The density of C.picta was too low for a statistical analysis. The vector monitoring and how it is commonly performed, is suitable for estimating densities of C.melanoneura. Nevertheless, above a certain temperature threshold, prediction of C.melanoneura density might be skewed. No evidence was found that other relatively abundant psyllid species in the orchard, viz. Baeopelma colorata, Cacopsylla breviantennata, Cacopsylla brunneipennis, Cacopsylla pruni and Trioza urticae, were involved in 'Candidatus Phytoplasma mali' transmission. While individuals complying with lockdown regulations have embraced an acceptance of the concept of the common good, at a broad community level many are finding the transition from individualism to collective thinking required during a pandemic difficult to navigate. In this article, we look at government responses to the pandemic in six African countries (Malawi, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana), and highlight ethical concerns arising in these contexts.Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) remain inadequate - both globally and in South Africa (SA). We systematically scoped the available policies and guidelines for SRH-related policy for AGYW in SA. We found many available policies and guidelines to address issues of family planning, HIV prevention and care and antenatal and maternal care. Despite the wealth of guidance, SA's high rates of pregnancy and HIV transmission continue unabated. Across the two studies, 64.7% (n=649) and 47.8% (n=53) of mothers, respectively, had returned to school at the time of the study. Of these mothers, the majority had returned to school within the first 2 months post partum (study 1 67.6%; n=439; and study 2 58.5%; n=31), fewer between 2 and 6 months (16.9%; n=110; and 22.6%; n=12), and after 12 months (2.0%; n=13; and unknown). Our findings indicate a mismatch between SA's national policy recommendations and actual return patterns, showing that a large proportion of mothers returned to school **** earlier than advised. This study also highlights a particular need to amend school policies that support early-returners and their children. Additional research on the needs of mother-child dyads and studies on the impact of different timescales on educational and health outcomes are needed to further inform policy and practice regarding adolescent mothers' return to school.An HIV-positive mother infected her daughter with extensively drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Despite adhering to the then current guidelines for prevention, the infant was diagnosed with extensively drug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis at the age of 4 months and developed tuberculous meningitis. After a short delay, appropriate treatment was initiated, followed by an inhospital stay at a specialised hospital. The infant became generally well, but had delayed neurological development. Secondary hydrocephalus due to tuberculous meningitis required a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. After 2 years of microbiologically and clinically effective tuberculosis treatment and several shunt complications, the HIV-negative child died at the age of 28 months ‒ with radiological signs of a shunt infection. The reason for the fatal outcome was probably related to inadequate risk reduction of airborne mother-to-child transmission, inappropriate chemoprophylaxis and delayed initiation of adequate treatment.Antibody tests for the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV2, have been developed both as rapid diagnostic assays and for high-throughput formal serology platforms. Although these tests may be a useful adjunct to a diagnostic strategy, they have a number of limitations. Because of the antibody and viral dynamics of the coronavirus, their sensitivity can be variable, especially at early time points after symptom onset. Additional data are required on the performance of the tests in the South African population, especially with regard to development and persistence of antibody responses and whether antibodies are protective against reinfection. These tests may, however, be useful in guiding the public health response, providing data for research (including seroprevalence surveys and vaccine initiatives) and development of therapeutic strategies.The potential role for serological tests in the current COVID-19 pandemic has generated very considerable recent interest across many sectors worldwide, inter alia pathologists seeking additional weapons for their armoury of diagnostic tests; epidemiologists seeking tools to gain seroprevalence data that will inform improved models of the spread of disease; research scientists seeking tools to study the natural history of COVID-19 disease; vaccine developers seeking tools to assess vaccine efficacy in clinical trials; and companies and governments seeking tools to aid return-to-work decision-making. However, **** of the local debate to date has centred on questions surrounding whether regulatory approval processes are limiting access to serological tests, and has not paused to consider the intrinsically limiting impact of underlying fundamental biology and immunology on where and how different COVID-19 serological tests can usefully be deployed in the response to the current pandemic. We review, from an immunological perspective, recent experimental evidence on the time-dependency of adaptive immune responses following SARS-CoV-2 infection and the impact of this on the sensitivity and specificity of COVID-19 antibody tests made at different time points post infection. We interpret this scientific evidence in terms of mooted clinical applications for current COVID-19 antibody tests in identifying acute infections, in confirming recent or past infections at the individual and population level, and in detecting re-infection and protective immunity. We conclude with guidance on where current COVID-19 antibody tests can make a genuine impact in the pandemic.

Introduction Residence in a disadvantaged neighborhood associates with adverse health exposures and outcomes, and may increase risk for cognitive impairment and dementia. Utilization of a publicly available, geocoded disadvantage metric could facilitate efficient integration of social determinants of health into models of cognitive aging. Methods Using the validated Area Deprivation Index and two cognitive aging cohorts, we quantified Census block-level poverty, education, housing, and employment characteristics for the neighborhoods of 2119 older adults. We assessed relationships between neighborhood disadvantage and cognitive performance in domains sensitive to age-related change. Results Participants in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods (n = 156) were younger, more often female, and less often college-educated or white than those in less disadvantaged neighborhoods (n = 1963). Disadvantaged neighborhood residence associated with poorer performance on tests of executive function, verbal learning, and memory. Discussion This geospatial metric of neighborhood disadvantage may be valuable for exploring socially rooted risk mechanisms, and prioritizing high-risk communities for research recruitment and intervention.Introduction Preclinical testing in animal models is a critical component of the drug discovery and development process. Method Using EHR data from the University of Michigan (UM) hospitals and consensus-based diagnoses from the Michigan Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, we developed and validated a cohort discovery tool for identifying patients with AD. Applied to all UM patients, these labels were used to train an EHR-based machine learning model for predicting AD onset within 10 years. Results Applied to a test cohort of 1697 UM patients, the model achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristics curve of 0.70 (95% confidence interval = 0.63-0.77). Important predictive factors included cardiovascular factors and laboratory blood testing. Conclusion Routinely collected EHR data can be used to predict AD onset with modest accuracy. Mining routinely collected data could shed light on early indicators of AD appearance and progression.Introduction It has been reported that environmental factors such as hypoxia could contribute to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Therapeutics like hyperbaric oxygen treatment, which improves tissue oxygen supply and ameliorates hypoxic conditions in the brain, may be an alternative therapy for AD and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). The present work aims to investigate the potential therapeutic effect of hyperbaric oxygen treatment for AD and aMCI. Methods We recruited 42 AD, 11 aMCI, and 30 control AD patients in this study. AD and aMCI patients were treated with 40 minutes of hyperbaric oxygen once a day for 20 days and assessed by neuropsychiatric assessments including Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (****), and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) scale before and at 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up after treatment. Control AD patients who were not given hyperbaric oxygen treatment had similar clinical profile as hyperbaric oxygen treated AD. The ADL scale was significantly improved in AD patients after 1- and 3-month follow-up. Compared to the control AD patients, the MMSE and **** in hyperbaric oxygen treated AD patients were significantly improved after 1-month follow-up. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment also ameliorated the reduced brain glucose metabolism in some of the AD and aMCI patients. Conclusion Based on previous studies and our recent findings, we propose that hyperbaric oxygen treatment may be a promising alternative therapy for AD and aMCI.Introduction Informal caregiving is an essential element of health-care delivery. Methods We performed observational studies of community dwelling persons with dementia (PWD) to measure functional status by simultaneous assessment of physical activity (PA) and lifespace (LS). We present data from two caregiver/care-recipient dyads representing higher and average degrees of caregiver involvement. Results We acquired >42,800 (subject 1); >41,300 (subject 2) PA data points and >154,500 (subject 1); >119,700 (subject 2) LS data points over 15 months of near continuous observation. PA and LS patterns provided insights into the caregiver's role in structuring the PWD's day-to-day function and change in function over time. Discussion We show that device-enabled functional monitoring (FM) can successfully gather and display data at resolutions required for dementia care studies. Objective quantification of individual caregiver/care-recipient dyads provides opportunities to implement patient-centered care.

AD and aMCI patients were treated with 40 minutes of hyperbaric oxygen once a day for 20 days and assessed by neuropsychiatric assessments including Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) scale before and at 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up after treatment. Control AD patients who were not given hyperbaric oxygen treatment had similar clinical profile as hyperbaric oxygen treated AD. The Covid-19 pandemic especially affects cancer patients with higher incidence and mortality according to published series of original pandemic foci. The study aims to determine the mortality in our center due to covid-19 in cancer patients during the first 3 weeks of the epidemic.
The cancer patients who died of covid-19 during the analysis period have been reviewed describing the oncological and the covid-19 infection characteristics and the treatments established.
Confirmed cases covid-19 1069 with 132 deaths (12.3%). With cancer 36 patients (3.4%), 15 deceased (41.6%). Of the deceased, only 6 patients (40%) were in active treatment. The most frequent associated tumor was lung (8/15 patients, 53.3%), 11 with metastatic disease (11/15, 73.3%). No specific treatment was established in 40 % (6/15) of the patients. The rest of them received treatments with the active protocols.

An effective, point-of-care (POC) diagnostic tool could mitigate healthcare system strain, protect healthcare professionals, and support quarantine efforts. We believe that a POC tool can be developed that would be rapid, easy to use, and inexpensive. It could be used in the home, in resource-limited areas, and even in clinical settings. In this article, we summarize the current state of POC tools and propose an all-in-one, highly sensitive POC assay that integrates antibody detection, protein detection, and serum cytokine detection to diagnose COVID-19 infection. We believe this article will provide insight into the current state of POC diagnostics for COVID-19, and promote additional research and tool development that could be exceptionally impactful.

Despite a historical context of public health crises, data sharing agreements and transactional standards do not uniformly exist between institutions which hamper a foundational infrastructure to meet data sharing and integration needs for the advancement of public health.
There is a growing need to apply population health knowledge with technological solutions to data transfer, integration, and reasoning, to improve health in a broader learning health system ecosystem. To achieve this, data must be combined from healthcare provider organizations, public health departments, and other settings. Public health entities are in a unique position to consume these data, however, most do not yet have the infrastructure required to integrate data sources and apply computable knowledge to combat this pand dialogue on what steps can and should be taken to ensure that our regional and national health care systems can truly learn, in a rapid manner, so as to respond to this and future emergent public health crises.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, health systems had to quickly adopt a process for enabling targeted and patient-centered care delivery. This case study describes the utilization of Harrison's open-systems model to create an approach for rapid adoption of existing telehealth technologies in a large scale academic medical center.
An internal group of organizational developers, was enlisted to enable this effort. Local networks were employed and organized into focus groups to rapidly assess and address barriers to adoption and informal interviews with executive leadership were conducted to align organizational goals. Interventions include rapid deployment of focused and data driven provider, staff and patient support bolstered by effective communication and resource management.
There was an increase in the number of patient portal activation codes by 75% during the month of March. The number of activation codes generated expectedly decreased in April as many patients now had activated patient portalsdemic medical center.The Polyphony programme is a rapidly established collaboration whose aim is to build and maintain a collection of current healthcare knowledge about detection, diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 infections, and use Artificial Intelligence (knowledge engineering) techniques to apply the results in patient care. The initial goal is to assess whether the platform is adequate for rapidly building executable models of clinical expertise, while the longer term goal is to use the resulting COVID-19 knowledge model as a reference and resource for medical training, research and, with partners, develop products and services for better patient care. In this Polyphony progress-report we describe the first prototype of a care pathway and decision support system that is accessible on OpenClinical.net, a knowledge sharing repository. Pathfinder 1 demonstrates services including situation assessment and inference, decision making, outcome prediction and workflow management. Pathfinder 1 represents encouraging evidence that it is possible to rapidly develop and deploy practical clinical services for patient care and we hope to validate an advanced version in a collaborative internet trial.

GNE Myopathy is a recessive neuromuscular disorder characterized by adult-onset, slowly progressive distal and proximal muscle weakness, and a typical muscle pathology. Although GNE, which is the mutated gene in the disease, is well known as the key enzyme in the biosynthesis pathway of sialic acid, the pathophysiological pathway leading from GNE mutations to the muscle phenotype in GNE Myopathy is still unclear. The obvious hypothesis of impaired sialylation in patients' skeletal muscle as the cause of the disease is still controversial. In the present study we have investigated whether a distinctive altered pattern of sialylation in GNE Myopathy cultured muscle cells could be attributed to a specific glycoconjugate. Mass spectrometry based glycomic methodologies have been utilized to assess the sialylation level of protein N- and O-linked glycans and glycolipid derived glycans from patient and matched control samples. No consistent change in sialylation was detected in glycoconjugates. These results suggest potential additional roles for GNE that could account for the disease pathology.
The aim of the study was to identify the prevalence and associated factors of early sexual initiation among youth girls in Ethiopia.
From 15,683 women participants of the 2016 EDHS, a sub-sample of 6401 youth girls aged 15-24years were selected; from which 5737 youth girls who had a complete response to all variables of interest were retained for analysis. Bivariable and multivariable regression analysis were carried out.
The prevalence of early initiation of sexual intercourse among study participants was 2201(38.4%). The mean age of sexual intercourse initiation was 16.5years. The odds of early sexual initiation was higher among respondents belonging to age group of 20-24 (AOR=6.81, 95% CI (8.7, 12.13)), being from rural areas (AOR=1.68, 95%CI (1.04, 2.70)), living in Gambella (AOR=2.38, 95%CI (1.19, 4.78)), being from poorest wealth quintile (AOR=1.41, 95%CI (0.83, 2.41)), being not employed (AOR=1.59, 95%CI (1.23, 2.05)), have comprehensive HIV knowledge (AOR=1.2, 95% CI (1.74, 2.35), didn't read nehip, and awareness creation on the consequence of early initiation of sexual intercourse should be emphasized.

Individual-level analyses showed that all subclinical psychosis factors were associated with suicidal ideation. In within-pair analyses, estimates of associations were lower for MZ pairs than DZ pairs, except for the negative schizotypy-suicidal ideation association where estimates were consistent across individual-level and within-pair analyses. Findings provide evidence that the association between negative features and suicide ideation is not explained by familial factors and may be causal, though the possibility of confounding by individual-specific environmental factors and reverse causation cannot be ruled out. The relationships of positive and disorganised subclinical psychosis features with suicidal ideation cannot be explained by confounding due to environmental factors shared between siblings, but their associations may be due to shared genetic factors.
Memory is significantly impaired in schizophrenia. However, memory measures are often complex and confounded by additional impairments such as motivation and task comprehension, which can affect behavioral performance and obscure neural function during memory tasks. Neural signatures of memory encoding that are robust to potential confounds may shed additional light on neural deficits contributing to memory impairment in schizophrenia.
Here, we investigate a potential neural signature of memory-habituation-and its relationship with healthy and impaired memory function. To limit potential confounds, we used a passive depth of encoding memory task designed to elicit neural responses associated with memory encoding while limiting other cognitive demands. To determine whether habituation during encoding was predictive of intact memory processing, we first compared neural habituation over repeated encoding exposures with subsequent explicit memory in healthy individuals. We then tested whether a similar relatises that underlie behavioral memory performance.The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the relationships between upper jaw movements and nasal soft-tissue changes in patients who have undergone subspinal Le Fort I osteotomy combined with alar cinch suture. The database of our referral hospital was searched for patients who had undergone upper jaw surgery with a subspinal LFI osteotomy to correct dentoskeletal deformities between April 2012 and June 2016. Thirty-eight of the patients (15 men and 23 women) who were identified were eligible for inclusion. The average change in inter-alar width (ΔGAW) was +1.7 ± 1.2 mm. Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. (Eu) is a plant species used in traditional medicine to treat diabetes mellitus. Eu leaf extracts have been shown to regulate immuno-metabolic activities that are associated with obesity and insulin resistance. OBE100 and OBE104 are two natural Eu extracts that are rich in pentacyclic triterpenes. The major compounds identified in OBE100 are ursolic acid (UA), oleanolic acid (OA), and ursolic acid lactone (UAL), and the major compounds identified in OBE104 are UA and OA.
This study aimed to investigate the effects of two extracts from Eu leaves with different triterpene composition in a nutritional animal model of prediabetes.
A mouse model of diet-induced obesity was used to analyze the effects of the OBE100 and OBE104 treatments on metabolic markers and gene expression in liver and visceral adipose tissue.
Treating the prediabetic mouse model with OBE100 and OBE104 increased glucose tolerance. However, only the Eu extract that contained three triterpenes reduced mouse body weight, hepatic and adipose fat content, and plasma lipid levels. OBE100 treatment also led to decreased hepatic mRNA levels of PPARA, CPT1A, and SERBP1. In visceral adipose tissue, OBE100 treatment reduced expression of PPARA and ACACA and increased UCP1 expression.
These results suggest that developing a new multitargeting bioactive compound from the natural extract from Eu may help combat obesity and diabetes. Treatment with OBE100 had better effects than OBE104 in a diet-induced obesity mouse model, suggesting that the OBE100 extract, which contains three triterpenes, may be beneficial in combating obesity.

Xuebijing (XBJ) injection is a Chinese medicine containing extracts from Carthamus tinctorius L. (Carthami Flos, hong hua, Asteraceae), Paeonia lactiflora Pall. (Paeoniae radix rubra, chi shao, Ranunculaceae), Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuan xiong, Umbelliferae), Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge. (Salviae miltiorrhizae Radix Et Rhizoma, dan shen, Labiatae) and Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (Angelicae sinensis Radix, dang gui, Umbelliferae). It has been approved for the treatment of sepsis in China since 2004 and has been widely used as an add-on treatment for sepsis or septic shock with few side effects.
The aim of the present review was to analyse up-to-date information related to the treatment of sepsis with XBJ, including the bioactive constituents, clinical studies and potential mechanisms, and to discuss possible scientific gaps, to provide a reliable reference for future studies.
Scientific resources concentrating on treating sepsis with XBJ were searched through PubMed, the Chinese studies concerning the pharmacokinetics, interactions with antibiotics, real-world efficacy and safety, pharmacological mechanisms of the bioactive components and large-scale clinical trials should be conducted in the future.

We run two experiments, in which we compared the body sway while standing during the conditions of 1) wearing and non-wearing VR with eyes-opened (experiment #1), 2) wearing and no-wearing VR with eyes-closed (experiment #2), and 3) wearing VR with eyes-opened when the scene was turned on and off (experiment #2). Forty-four (experiment #1) and fifteen (experiment #2) young adults were instructed to remain as still as possible on a force plate for 60-s and performed three trials in each quiet standing condition. The center of pressure (CoP) displacement, mean velocity, root mean square (RMS), area and median frequency of sway were calculated in both experiments. In the experiment #1, wearing VR condition with eyes-opened largely increased the AP and ML CoP displacement, AP mean velocity, AP and ML RMS, and area (p less then 0.05) compared to non-wearing VR with eyes-opened. In the experiment #2, no differences were found for any conditions (eyes-closed and eyes-opened with turned on and off VR scene). In conclusion, wearing VR head-mounted goggles increased body sway of young adults during standing postural task, when the individuals were with eyes-opened. However, the effects of wearing VR head-mounted goggles on body sway disappeared when the individuals were with eyes-closed or the google scene was turned off the scene compared to not wearing VR head-mounted goggles with eyes-closed or turned on scene, respectively.
Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. (Eu) is a plant species used in traditional medicine to treat diabetes mellitus. Eu leaf extracts have been shown to regulate immuno-metabolic activities that are associated with obesity and insulin resistance. OBE100 and OBE104 are two natural Eu extracts that are rich in pentacyclic triterpenes. The major compounds identified in OBE100 are ursolic acid (UA), oleanolic acid (OA), and ursolic acid lactone (UAL), and the major compounds identified in OBE104 are UA and OA. This study aimed to investigate the effects of two extracts from Eu leaves with different triterpene composition in a nutritional animal model of prediabetes. A mouse model of diet-induced obesity was used to analyze the effects of the OBE100 and OBE104 treatments on metabolic markers and gene expression in liver and visceral adipose tissue. Treating the prediabetic mouse model with OBE100 and OBE104 increased glucose tolerance. However, only the Eu extract that contained three triterpenes reduced mouse body weight, hepatic and adipose fat content, and plasma lipid levels. OBE100 treatment also led to decreased hepatic mRNA levels of PPARA, CPT1A, and SERBP1. In visceral adipose tissue, OBE100 treatment reduced expression of PPARA and ACACA and increased UCP1 expression.
