Young adults report the highest rates of heavy, risky alcohol consumption and are a priority population for alcohol prevention and intervention efforts. Alcohol strategies that leverage other health concerns and use technology may offer an innovative solution. Poor sleep is common among young adults and is a risk factor for developing an alcohol use disorder. Moreover, young adults are interested in information to help them sleep better, and behavioral sleep interventions address alcohol use as a standard practice.

    The primary aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a 2-week multimodal mobile sleep intervention for reducing drinks consumed per week among heavy-drinking young adults. We will explore the effects on alcohol-related consequences, assessing quantitative and qualitative sleep characteristics as secondary aims. The study's goals are tstitutes of Health in May 2018. Recruitment began in December 2018 and will be concluded in Spring 2021. As of February 4, 2021, we have enrolled 110 participants.

    The COVID-19 pandemic presents a great public health challenge worldwide, especially given the urgent need to identify effective drugs and develop a vaccine in a short period of time. Globally, several drugs and vaccine candidates are in clinical trials. However, because these drugs and vaccines are still being tested, there is still no definition of which ones will succeed.

    This study aimed to assess the opinions of over 1000 virus researchers with knowledge on the prevention and treatment of coronavirus-related human diseases to determine the most promising drug and vaccine candidates to address COVID-19.

    We mapped the clinical trials related to COVID-19 registered at ClinicalTrials.gov. These data were used to prepare a survey questionnaire about treatments and vaccine candidates for COVID-19. In May 2020, a global survey was conducted with authors of recent scientific publications indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection related to viruses, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, coronavtations were in line with recent results related to treatments and vaccine candidates for COVID-19.
    Young-onset colorectal cancer is a contemporary issue in need of substantial research input. The incidence of colorectal cancer in adults younger than 50 years is rising in contrast to the decreasing incidence of this cancer in older adults. People with young-onset colorectal cancer may be at that stage of life in which they are establishing their careers, building relationships with long-term partners, raising children, and assembling a financial base for the future. A qualitative study designed to facilitate triangulation with extant quantitative patient-reported data would contribute the first comprehensive resource for understanding how this distinct patient population experiences health services and the outcomes of care throughout the patient pathway.

    The aim of this study was to undertake a mixed-methods study of qualitative patient-reported data on young-onset colorectal cancer experiences and outcomes.

    This is a study of web-based unsolicited patient stories recounting experiences of health servr this study was granted by the Macquarie University Human Research Ethics Committee in June 2020. The analytical framework was established in September 2020, and data collection commenced in October 2020. We will complete the analysis in March 2021 and we aim to publish the results in mid-2021.

    The findings of this study will identify areas for improvement in the PROD methodology and inform the development of a large-scale study of young-onset colorectal cancer patient narratives. We believe that this will be the first qualitative study to identify and describe the patient pathway from symptom self-identification to help-seeking through to diagnosis, treatment, and to survivorship or palliation for people with young-onset colorectal cancer.

However, insights into organ architecture are currently hampered by an absence of standardized quantitative 3D analysis. We aimed to develop a robust technology to visualize, digitalize, and segment the architecture of two tubular systems in 3D double resin casting micro computed tomography (DUCT). As proof of principle, we applied DUCT to a mouse model for Alagille syndrome (Jag1Ndr/Ndr ****), characterized by intrahepatic bile duct paucity, that can spontaneously generate a biliary system in adulthood. DUCT identified increased central biliary branching and peripheral bile duct tortuosity as two compensatory processes occurring in distinct regions of Jag1Ndr/Ndr liver, leading to full reconstitution of wild-type biliary volume and phenotypic recovery. DUCT is thus a powerful new technology for 3D analysis, which can reveal novel phenotypes and provide a standardized method of defining liver architecture in mouse models.

  • Birth asphyxia is one of the leading causes of death in low and middle-income countries and the prominent cause of neonatal mortality in Ethiopia. Early detection and managing its determinants would change the burden of birth asphyxia. Thus, this study identified determinants of birth asphyxia among newborns delivered in public hospitals of West Shoa Zone, central Ethiopia. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/anacardic-acid.html A hospital-based unmatched case-control study was conducted from May to July 2020. Cases were newborns with APGAR (appearance, pulse, grimaces, activity, and respiration) score of less then 7 at first and fifth minute of birth and controls were newborns with APGAR score of ≥ 7 at first and fifth minute of birth. All newborns with birth asphyxia during the study period were included in the study while; two comparable controls were selected consecutively after each birth asphyxia case. A pre-tested and structured questionnaire was used to collect maternal socio-demographic and antepartum characteristics. The pre-tested checklist was used toh partograph to early identify prolonged labor, breech presentation and determine the mode of delivery that would lower the burden of birth asphyxia.The COVID-19 outbreak on the Diamond Princess (DP) cruise ship has provided empirical data to study the transmission potential of COVID-19 with the presence of pre/asymptomatic cases. We studied the changes in R0 on DP from January 21 to February 19, 2020 based on chain binomial models under two scenarios no quarantine assuming a random mixing condition, and quarantine of passengers in cabins-passengers may get infected either by an infectious case in a shared cabin or by pre/asymptomatic crew who continued to work. Estimates of R0 at the beginning of the epidemic were 3.27 (95% CI, 3.02-3.54) and 3.78 (95% CI, 3.49-4.09) respectively for serial intervals of 5 and 6 days; and when quarantine started, with the reported asymptomatic ratio 0.505, R0 rose to 4.18 (95%CI, 3.86-4.52) and 4.73 (95%CI, 4.37-5.12) respectively for passengers who might be exposed to the virus due to pre/asymptomatic crew. Results confirm that the higher the asymptomatic ratio is, the more infectious contacts would happen. We find evidence to support a US CDC report that "a high proportion of asymptomatic infections could partially explain the high attack rate among cruise ship passengers and crew." Our study suggests that if the asymptomatic ratio is high, the conventional quarantine procedure may not be effective to stop the spread of virus.The psychological impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on cancer patients, a population at higher risk of fatal consequences if infected, has been only rarely evaluated. This study was conducted at the Departments of Oncology of four hospitals located in the Verona area in Italy to investigate the psychological consequences of the pandemic on cancer patients under active anticancer treatments. A 13-item ad hoc questionnaire to evaluate the psychological status of patients before and during the pandemic was administered to 474 consecutive subjects in the time frame between April 27th and June 7th 2020. Among the 13 questions, 7 were considered appropriate to elaborate an Emotional Vulnerability Index (EVI) that allows to separate the population in two groups (low versus high emotional vulnerability) according to observed median values. During the emergency period, the feeling of high vulnerability was found in 246 patients (53%) and was significantly associated with the following clinical variables female gender, being under chemotherapy treatment, age ≤ 65 years. Compared to the pre-pandemic phase, the feeling of vulnerability was increased in 41 patients (9%), remained stably high in 196 (42%) and, surprisingly, was reduced in 10 patients (2%). Overall, in a population characterized by an high level of emotional vulnerability the pandemic had a marginal impact and only a small proportion of patients reported an increase of their emotional vulnerability.Adults under time pressure share with others generously, but with more time they act more selfishly. In the current study, we investigated whether young children already operate in this same way, and, if so, whether this changes over the preschool and early school age years. We tested 144 children in three age groups (3-, 5-, and 7-year olds) in a one-shot dictator game Children were given nine stickers and had the possibility to share stickers with another child who was absent. Children in the Time Pressure condition were instructed to share quickly, whereas children in the Delay condition were instructed to take time and consider their decision carefully. Across ages, children in the Time Pressure condition shared significantly more stickers than children in the Delay condition. Moreover, the longer children waited, the less they shared. Thus, children, like adults, are more prosocial when acting spontaneously than after considering their decision more carefully.Sequential movements are often grouped into several chunks, as evidenced by the modulation of the timing of each elemental movement. Even during synchronized tapping with a metronome, we sometimes feel subjective accent for every few taps. To examine whether motor segmentation emerges during synchronized movements, we trained monkeys to generate a series of predictive saccades synchronized with visual stimuli which sequentially appeared for a fixed interval (400 or 600 ms) at six circularly arranged landmark locations. We found two types of motor segmentations that featured periodic modulation of saccade timing. First, the intersaccadic interval (ISI) depended on the target location and saccade direction, indicating that particular combinations of saccades were integrated into motor chunks. Second, when a task-irrelevant rectangular contour surrounding three landmarks ("inducer") was presented, the ISI significantly modulated depending on the relative target location to the inducer. All patterns of individual differences seen in monkeys were also observed in humans. Importantly, the effects of the inducer greatly decreased or disappeared when the animals were trained to generate only reactive saccades (latency >100 ms), indicating that the motor segmentation may depend on the internal rhythms. Thus, our results demonstrate two types of motor segmentation during synchronized movements one is related to the hierarchical organization of sequential movements and the other is related to the spontaneous grouping of rhythmic events. This experimental paradigm can be used to investigate the underlying neural mechanism of temporal grouping during rhythm production.

  • A benzene, para- and meta-xylene-degrading Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, yellow-pigmented bacterium, designated as D2P1T, was isolated from a para-xylene-degrading enrichment culture. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA genes showed that D2P1T shares a distinct phyletic lineage within the genus Hydrogenophaga and shows highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Hydrogenophaga taeniospiralis NBRC 102512T (99.2 %) and Hydrogenophaga palleronii NBRC 102513T (98.3 %). The draft genome sequence of D2P1T is 5.63 Mb long and the genomic DNA G+C content is 65.5 %. Orthologous average nucleotide identity (OrthoANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) analyses confirmed low genomic relatedness to its closest relatives (OrthoANI less then 86 %; dDDH less then 30 %). D2P1T contains ubiquinone 8 (Q-8) as the only respiratory quinone and phospholipid, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol as major polar lipids. The main whole-cell fatty acids of D2P1T are summed feature 3 (C16  1 ω7c/C16  1 ω6c), C16  0 and summed feature 8 (C18  1 ω7c/C18  1 ω6c). The polyphasic taxonomic results indicated that strain D2P1T represents a novel species of the genus Hydrogenophaga, for which the name Hydrogenophaga aromaticivorans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is D2P1T (=LMG 31780T=NCAIM B 02655T).
    The cerebellum's involvement in AD has been under-appreciated by historically labeling as a normal control in AD research.

    We determined the involvement of the cerebellum in AD progression. Postmortem human and APPswe/PSEN1dE9 **** cerebellums were used to assess the cerebellar Purkinje cells (PC) by immunohistochemistry. The locomotor and spatial cognitive functions were assessed in 4- to 5-month-old APPswe/PSEN1dE9 ****. Aβ plaque and APP processing were determined in APPswe/PSEN1dE9 **** at different age groups by immunohistochemistry and Western blot.

    We observed loss of cerebellar PC in mild cognitive impairment and AD patients compared with cognitively normal controls. A strong trend towards PC loss was found in AD **** as early as 5months. Impairment of balance beam and rotorod performance, but no spatial learning and memory dysfunction was observed in AD **** at 4-5months. Aβ plaque in the cerebral cortex was evidenced in AD **** at 2months and dramatically increased at 6months. Less and smaller Aβ plaques were observed in the cerebellum than in the cerebrum of AD ****. Similar intracellular APP staining was observed in the cerebellum and cerebrum of AD **** at 2 to 10months. Similar expression of full-length APP and C-terminal fragments were indicated in the cerebrum and cerebellum of AD **** during aging.

(Atlas Pistachio) is an Anacardiaceae tree traditionally used in Tunisia for the treatment of ophthalmic, stomatitis, and digestive tract diseases. In the present study, the Pistacia atlantica Desf. roots extract (PR) was phytochemically analyzed, for the first time, by LC-ESI-MS for phenolic and flavonoid contents, in vitro tested for its potential antioxidant activity based on the 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and the reduced power essays (FRAP), and in vivo tested for its ability to shield against ethanol-induced gastric ulcer in ****. The LC-ESI-MS analysis proved the identification of 12 compounds, including Quinic, Gallic, and Protocatechuic, as major phenolic acids and high levels of flavonoids, such as Catechin, Epicatechin, and Cirsiliol. PR also exhibited a mild in vitro antioxidant activity when compared with ascorbic acid. A literature review was performed to determine the educational quality of plastic surgery videos found on YouTube. Articles reviewing the educational quality of videos about surgical procedures, their accuracy, and their utility for surgical trainees were included.     A benzene, para- and meta-xylene-degrading Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, yellow-pigmented bacterium, designated as D2P1T, was isolated from a para-xylene-degrading enrichment culture. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA genes showed that D2P1T shares a distinct phyletic lineage within the genus Hydrogenophaga and shows highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Hydrogenophaga taeniospiralis NBRC 102512T (99.2 %) and Hydrogenophaga palleronii NBRC 102513T (98.3 %). We determined the involvement of the cerebellum in AD progression. Postmortem human and APPswe/PSEN1dE9 mice cerebellums were used to assess the cerebellar Purkinje cells (PC) by immunohistochemistry. The locomotor and spatial cognitive functions were assessed in 4- to 5-month-old APPswe/PSEN1dE9 mice. Aβ plaque and APP processing were determined in APPswe/PSEN1dE9 mice at different age groups by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. We observed loss of cerebellar PC in mild cognitive impairment and AD patients compared with cognitively normal controls. A strong trend towards PC loss was found in AD mice as early as 5months. Impairment of balance beam and rotorod performance, but no spatial learning and memory dysfunction was observed in AD mice at 4-5months. Aβ plaque in the cerebral cortex was evidenced in AD mice at 2months and dramatically increased at 6months. Less and smaller Aβ plaques were observed in the cerebellum than in the cerebrum of AD mice.   • An increasing number of metal bioavailability models are available for use in setting regulations and conducting risk assessments in aquatic systems. Selection of the most appropriate model is dependent on the user's needs but will always benefit from an objective, comparative assessment of the performance of available models. In 2017, an expert workshop developed procedures for assessing metal bioavailability models. We found that acute Cu MLR and BLM performances are quite comparable, though there are differences in performance on a species-specific basis and in the resulting water quality criteria as a function of water chemistry. In contrast, the chronic Cu MLR performed distinctly better than the BLM. Observed differences in performance are due to the smaller effects of hardness and pH on chronic Cu toxicity compared to acute Cu toxicity. These differences are captured in the chronic MLR model but not the chronic BLM, which only adjusts for differences in organism sensitivity. In general, we continue to recommend concurrent development of both modeling approaches because they provide useful comparative insights into the strengths, limitations, and predictive capabilities of each model.     Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) is a preferred technique for analyzing complex organic mixtures. Currently, there is no consensus normalization approach, nor an objective method for selecting one, for quantitative analyses of FT-ICR-MS data. We investigate a method to evaluate and score the amount of bias various normalization approaches introduce into the data.

    We evaluate the ability of the Statistical Procedure for the Analysis of Normalization Strategies (SPANS) to guide the selection of appropriate normalization approaches for two different FT-ICR-MS data sets. Furthermore, we test the robustness of SPANS results to changes in SPANS parameter values and assess the impact of using various normalization approaches on downstream statistical analyses.

    The normalization approach identified by SPANS differed for the two data sets. Normalization methods impacted the statistical significance of peaks differently, underscoring the importance of carefully evaluating potly to the reproducibility of results than the p-value thresholds used to obtain those peaks.
    COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma (CCP) is a promising treatment for COVID-19. Blood collectors have rapidly scaled up collection and distribution programs.

    We developed a detailed simulation model of CCP donor recruitment, collection, production, and distribution processes. We ran our model using varying epidemic trajectories from 11 U.S. states and with key input parameters drawn from wide ranges of plausible values to identify key drivers of ability to scale collections capacity and meet demand for CCP.

    Utilization of available CCP collections capacity followed increases in COVID-19 hospital discharges with a lag. Utilization never exceeded 75% of available capacity in most simulations. Demand was met for most of the simulation period in most simulations, but a substantial portion of demand went unmet during early, sharp increases in hospitalizations. For epidemic trajectories that included multiple epidemic peaks, second wave demand could generally be met due to stockpiles established during the decline from an earlier peak. Apheresis machine capacity (number of machines) and probability that COVID-19 recovered individuals are willing to donate were the most important supply-side drivers of ability to meet demand. Recruitment capacity was important in states with early peaks.

    We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing allogeneic stem cell transplantation between January 1, 2005, and September 30, 2015. The primary outcome measure was the development of BSI within 30days of transplantation.

    The Japanese Gastric Cancer Treatment Guidelines recommend S-1 and S-1 plus docetaxel as postoperative chemotherapy for pathological stage II and III gastric cancer (GC). There is currently no strategy for using chemotherapy to treat high-risk recurrent pathological stage II/III. Previous studies reported that the several nutritional, immunological, and inflammatory markers examined the association with clinical outcomes after surgery for GC.

    Ninety patients with GC (stage II, n = 48; stage III, n = 42) for whom gastrectomy was performed at our institution between November 2009 and September 2018 were examined. Nutritional, immunological, and inflammatory markers were calculated from blood samples within 1 week before surgery.

    The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) status correlated with the pathological stage and disease recurrence after surgery (p = 0.015 and p < 0.0001, respectively). Thirty-three patients had disease recurrence after gastrectomy (stage II, n = 11; stage III, n = 22). The PNI was significantly lower in the recurrent group than in the non-recurrent group (p = 0.0003). The PNI correlated with overall survival and recurrence-free survival after gastrectomy (p = 0.0021 and p = 0.0001, respectively). A multivariate analysis identified the PNI as an independent prognostic factor (p = 0.006).

    The PNI may be useful for predicting the outcomes of patients with pathological stage II/III GC and may contribute to the selection of an appropriate adjuvant chemotherapy regimen.

    Previous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of the "drip-and-ship" model in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients treated with intravenous (IV) thrombolysis. We investigated and report the outcomes of the safety and efficacy of the "drip-and-ship" model in AIS patients with acute large-vessel occlusion (LVO) in the anterior circulation who underwent endovascular treatment.

    A total of 92 AIS patients with LVO who underwent endovascular treatment enrolled from April 2017 to July 2018 at a single academic comprehensive stroke center (CSC) were included. Patients were divided into 2 groups a front-door group (directly admitted to the CSC) and a drip-and-ship group (transferred to the CSC from other hospital). Logistic regression model was used to evaluate the functional outcome, mortality, and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) at 90 days.

    After adjusting for age, gender, occlusion site, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, and other potential covariates, we did not see difference in modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score between the 2 groups at 90 days. The rate of excellent functional outcome (defined as mRS 0-1) in the drip-and-ship group is lower than the front-door group (p = 0.017); however, functional outcomes (defined as mRS 0-2) have no difference (p = 0.117). There was no significant difference in sICH (p = 0.909) and mortality (p = 0.319) between the 2 groups.

    The "drip-and-ship" model has the potential to be a feasible model for patients with LVO in the anterior circulation to undergo endovascular treatment. Further large-scale prospective studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of systemic administration of decorin (DC) on facial nerve (FN) regeneration.

    A total of 32 female albino Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups control (C) group no bilateral FN neurorrhaphy (B-FNN), no DC application, sham-operated group B-FNN without DC application, DC group DC application without B-FNN, and B-FNN + DC group B-FNN and DC application. Nerve conduction studies were performed before and after skin incisions at 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th weeks in all groups. The amplitude and latency of compound muscle action potentials were recorded. FN samples were obtained and were investigated under light microscopy and immunohistochemical staining. The nerve and axon diameter, number of axons, H score, Schwann cell proliferation, and myelin and axonal degeneration were recorded quantitatively.

    In the sham group, the 3rd and 5th postoperative week, amplitude values were significantly lower than those of the B-FNN + DC group (p < 0.05). Nerve diameters were found to be significantly larger in the sham, DC, and B-FNN + DC groups than in the C group (p < 0.05). Previous studies reported that the several nutritional, immunological, and inflammatory markers examined the association with clinical outcomes after surgery for GC. Ninety patients with GC (stage II, n = 48; stage III, n = 42) for whom gastrectomy was performed at our institution between November 2009 and September 2018 were examined. Nutritional, immunological, and inflammatory markers were calculated from blood samples within 1 week before surgery. The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) status correlated with the pathological stage and disease recurrence after surgery (p = 0.015 and p < 0.0001, respectively). Thirty-three patients had disease recurrence after gastrectomy (stage II, n = 11; stage III, n = 22). The PNI was significantly lower in the recurrent group than in the non-recurrent group (p = 0.0003). The PNI correlated with overall survival and recurrence-free survival after gastrectomy (p = 0.0021 and p = 0.0001, respectively). A multivariate analysis identified the PNI as an independent prognostic factor (p = 0.006). The PNI may be useful for predicting the outcomes of patients with pathological stage II/III GC and may contribute to the selection of an appropriate adjuvant chemotherapy regimen. Previous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of the "drip-and-ship" model in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients treated with intravenous (IV) thrombolysis. We investigated and report the outcomes of the safety and efficacy of the "drip-and-ship" model in AIS patients with acute large-vessel occlusion (LVO) in the anterior circulation who underwent endovascular treatment. A total of 92 AIS patients with LVO who underwent endovascular treatment enrolled from April 2017 to July 2018 at a single academic comprehensive stroke center (CSC) were included. Patients were divided into 2 groups a front-door group (directly admitted to the CSC) and a drip-and-ship group (transferred to the CSC from other hospital). Logistic regression model was used to evaluate the functional outcome, mortality, and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) at 90 days. After adjusting for age, gender, occlusion site, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, and other potential covariates, we did not see difference in modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score between the 2 groups at 90 days. The rate of excellent functional outcome (defined as mRS 0-1) in the drip-and-ship group is lower than the front-door group (p = 0.017); however, functional outcomes (defined as mRS 0-2) have no difference (p = 0.117). There was no significant difference in sICH (p = 0.909) and mortality (p = 0.319) between the 2 groups. The "drip-and-ship" model has the potential to be a feasible model for patients with LVO in the anterior circulation to undergo endovascular treatment. Further large-scale prospective studies are warranted to confirm these findings. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of systemic administration of decorin (DC) on facial nerve (FN) regeneration. A total of 32 female albino Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups control (C) group no bilateral FN neurorrhaphy (B-FNN), no DC application, sham-operated group B-FNN without DC application, DC group DC application without B-FNN, and B-FNN + DC group B-FNN and DC application. Nerve conduction studies were performed before and after skin incisions at 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th weeks in all groups. The amplitude and latency of compound muscle action potentials were recorded. FN samples were obtained and were investigated under light microscopy and immunohistochemical staining. The nerve and axon diameter, number of axons, H score, Schwann cell proliferation, and myelin and axonal degeneration were recorded quantitatively. In the sham group, the 3rd and 5th postoperative week, amplitude values were significantly lower than those of the B-FNN + DC group (p < 0.05). Nerve diameters were found to be significantly larger in the sham, DC, and B-FNN + DC groups than in the C group (p < 0.05). The number of axons, the axon diameter, and the H scores were found to be significantly higher in the B-FNN + DC group than in the sham group (p < 0.05). To provide a scientific basis for tobacco control strategies and measures, this study investigated cancer deaths attributed to smoking from 2005 to 2017 and predicted mortality trends from 2018 to 2020 in Qingdao. We used time series analysis to evaluate the number of deaths attributed to smoking among residents over 35 years old in Qingdao and predicted mortality trends. The number of cancer deaths attributed to smoking in Qingdao from 2005 to 2016 was between 170 and 407, showing an upward trend and a certain periodicity. The best model is the ARIMA (2,1,0)×(3,1,0)12, with the lowest BIC (6.640) and the highest stationary R2 (0.500). The predicted cancer deaths curve attributed to smoking in 2017 is consistent with the actual curve, with an average relative error of 5.74%. Applying this model to further predict the number of cancer deaths attributed to smoking in Qingdao from January 2018 to December 2020, the predicted results were 5,249, 5,423 and 6,048, respectively. No differences were observed in moving directions or aggregation of midges under artificial temperature and CO2 gradients. However, midges preferred sounds at 75 Hz compared with other frequencies (all ≤300 Hz) as observed in a field experiment involving floating traps with loudspeakers. Moreover, when background noise was experimentally masked using white noise of all frequencies, midges were significantly more likely to aggregate at bright spots in the direction of the sea than in the absence of white noise. These results establish that sound is used by midges to navigate in dark seas and move toward the shore where exposed hard substrates are in abundance. Marine mammals present well-known cases of sound pollution at sea; here the finding in the insignificant marine midge is just the harbinger of the potential effects noise at shore may have to affect critical reproductive stages of marine organisms.
    Austria has high health resource use compared to similar countries. Reclassifying (switching) medicines from prescription to non-prescription can reduce pressure on health resources and aid timely access to medicines. Since Austria is less progressive in this area than many other countries, this research aimed to elucidate enablers and barriers to it reclassifying medicines and make recommendations for change in the context of similar research conducted elsewhere.

    Qualitative research using a heuristic approach was conducted in Austria in 2018. Informed by their own "insider" and "outsider" knowledge, the authors identified themes from personal interviews with 24 participants, including reclassification committee members, government officials and stakeholders, before comparing these themes with earlier research findings.

    Significant barriers to reclassification included committee conservatism, minimal political support, medical negativity and few company applications. Insufficient transparency about committee decisions, expectations of adverse committee decisions and a limited market discouraged company applications. Austria's 'social partnership' arrangement and consensus decision making aided a conservative approach, but the regulator and an alternative non-committee switch process were enabling. Pharmacy showed mixed interest in reclassification. Suggested improvements include increasing transparency, committee composition changes, encouraging a more evidence-based approach by the committee, more pharmacy undergraduate clinical training, and companies using scientific advisory meetings and submitting high quality applications.

We sought to investigate whether there were racial/ethnic disparities among pregnant women with the most severe form of alloimmunization who require intrauterine transfusions (IUT). We reviewed patients who underwent IUT for alloimmunization at a single fetal treatment center between 2015 and 2020. This "IUT cohort" was compared to an "Alloimmunization cohort" patients seen at our institution with a diagnosis of alloimmunization during pregnancy, who did not receive IUT. We collected maternal demographics including self-identified race/ethnicity and primary language, transfusion, and antibody characteristics. The cohorts were compared using unpaired t-tests, Mann-Whitney tests, and Fischer's exact tests, as appropriate. The IUT cohort included 43 patients and the alloimmunization cohort included 1049 patients. Compared to the alloimmunization cohort, there were significantly more patients of Latina descent in the IUT cohort (23.3% vs. 3.4%, p  less then  .0001), and more non-English speakers (18.6% vs. 4.6%, p = .001). Twenty-one percent (9/43) of patients had immigrated to the United States, all of whom had pregnancies or miscarriages in their country of origin. A third of patients had new antibodies identified on serial screens during the current pregnancy. Significantly more women of Latina ethnicity and non-English speakers required IUTs compared to the cohort of women with alloimmunization. Hippocampal corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) gene expression and baseline HPA axis activity were analyzed at postnatal (P) days 6, 12, 15, and 21, and in adulthood (P75); these factors were correlated with plasticity markers and adult behavior. Our results indicate that MS180 induces an increase in hippocampal CRH expression at P9, P12, and P15, whereas an increase in hypothalamic CRH expression was observed from P12 to P21. Increased arginine-vasopressin expression and corticosterone levels were observed only at P21. Moreover, MS180 caused transient alterations in hypothalamic synaptophysin expression during early life. As adults, MS180 rats showed a passive coping strategy in the forced swimming test, cognitive impairments in the object location test, increased hypothalamic CRH expression, and decreased oxytocin (OXT) expression. Spearman's analysis indicated that cognitive impairments correlated with CRH and OXT expression. In conclusion, our data indicate that MS180 induces a transient increase in hippocampal CRH expression in neonates that precedes the effects on hypothalamic neuropeptides, confirming the role of increased CRH during the temporal window of vulnerability as a mediator of some of the detrimental effects of ELS on brain development and adult behavior.
    Inappropriate request for laboratory tests is a challenging problem and an important cause for additional healthcare costs. Indeed, it may have further ambiguity for the clinicians. This study aimed to design an education-based program to reduce unnecessary laboratory testing orders and the associated costs.

    In this interventional prospective study that took place in an educational hospital, the type and frequency of selected laboratory testing requested by gynecology, and obstetrics residents in the patients with gestational diabetes mellitus, preeclampsia, preterm labor, and premature preterm rupture of the membrane as well as cesarean section and normal vaginal delivery were analyzed periodically in a 1-year interval. At the same time, continuous educational supports and monitoring were performed. The results were compared before and after interventions.

    The educational intervention regardless of the etiologies of the admission, decreased the requested laboratory testing significantly (p<0.001), except for CBC. Indeed, no near misses or delays in treatment were observed. Cost analysis showed a 31.3% reduction of expenses per inpatient day due to the decrease in the number of daily laboratory testing ordered.

    Methyldibromo glutaronitrile (MDBGN) was one of the most frequent and relevant allergens found in patch testing at the beginning of this century. In 2008, this preservative was banned from cosmetics in Europe and ever since the prevalence of contact allergy to MDBGN has progressively decreased. Despite that gradual decline, MDBGN is still patch-tested in most baseline series. This study assessed the frequency of MDBGN sensitization, epidemiological characteristics of allergic patients, and the relevance of positive patch tests in a nationwide Spanish registry (REIDAC).

    We evaluated consecutively patch-tested patients in all participating centres. Using these data, we calculated the proportion of patients with positive patch tests to MDBGN from June 2018 to June 2020 and evaluated the relevance of the positive patch tests.

In this interventional prospective study that took place in an educational hospital, the type and frequency of selected laboratory testing requested by gynecology, and obstetrics residents in the patients with gestational diabetes mellitus, preeclampsia, preterm labor, and premature preterm rupture of the membrane as well as cesarean section and normal vaginal delivery were analyzed periodically in a 1-year interval. At the same time, continuous educational supports and monitoring were performed. The results were compared before and after interventions. The educational intervention regardless of the etiologies of the admission, decreased the requested laboratory testing significantly (p<0.001), except for CBC. Indeed, no near misses or delays in treatment were observed. Cost analysis showed a 31.3% reduction of expenses per inpatient day due to the decrease in the number of daily laboratory testing ordered. In 2008, this preservative was banned from cosmetics in Europe and ever since the prevalence of contact allergy to MDBGN has progressively decreased. Despite that gradual decline, MDBGN is still patch-tested in most baseline series. This study assessed the frequency of MDBGN sensitization, epidemiological characteristics of allergic patients, and the relevance of positive patch tests in a nationwide Spanish registry (REIDAC). We evaluated consecutively patch-tested patients in all participating centres. Using these data, we calculated the proportion of patients with positive patch tests to MDBGN from June 2018 to June 2020 and evaluated the relevance of the positive patch tests. One hundred and fourteen out of 5072 (2.24 %) tested patients were sensitized to MDBGN. Clinical current relevance was confirmed in only one case. Although the frequency of contact allergy to MDBGN remains high, no clinical significance was found in most of these patients (5072 tests needed to obtain one relevant positive result).

  • Prehospital procedures (PHP) by emergency medical services (EMS) are performed regularly in penetrating trauma patients despite previous studies demonstrating no benefit. We sought to examine the influence of PHPs on outcomes in penetrating trauma patients in urban locations where transport to trauma center is not prolonged. We hypothesized that patients without PHPs would have better outcomes than those undergoing PHP.

    This was an Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma-sponsored, multicenter, prospective, observational trial of adults (18+ years) with penetrating trauma to the torso and/or proximal extremity presenting at 25 urban trauma centers. The impact of PHPs and transport mechanism on in-hospital mortality were examined.

    Of 2,284 patients included, 1,386 (60.7%) underwent PHP.     Itch is a complex and burdensome symptom in atopic dermatitis (AD). Severity of scratching/excoriation (SCORAD-scratch) has been found to be a valid measure of itch in AD. However, little is known about the longitudinal course of scratching/excoriations in AD.

    A prospective, dermatology practice-based study was performed of adults with AD (N = 399). The patients were assessed at baseline and approximately 6, 12, 18, and 24 months.

    Severity of excoriations correlated best with the Numerical Rating Scale-worst itch (Spearman correlation, ρ = 0.50), followed by a Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System Itch Questionnaire-scratching behavior T score (ρ = 0.48), Numerical Rating Scale-average itch (ρ = 0.41), relative frequency of itch (ρ = 0.36), and frequency of itch from eczema (ρ = 0.29, all P < 0.0001). Scratching severity showed good reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient range = 0.62-0.69). Overall, 30.6% and 5.5% had moderate (2) or severe (3) SCORAD-scratch scores.     To investigate the temporal pattern of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) presence on ocular surfaces using conjunctival swabs in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients.

    This study included 59 patients (32 newly admitted and 27 hospitalized for ≥2 weeks) with a COVID-19-confirmed diagnosis at the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center from March 3, 2020, to March 21, 2020. Conjunctival swab samples were collected from both eyes of all the 59 patients and were tested by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay. The range of sampling time lies widely between 1 and 50 days since symptom onset.

The initial response to islet transplantation and the subsequent acute inflammation is responsible for significant attrition of islets following both autologous and allogenic procedures. This multicentre study compares this inflammatory response using cytokine profiles and complement activation. Inflammatory cytokine and complement pathway activity were examined in two cohorts of patients undergoing total pancreatectomy followed either by autologous (n=11) or allogenic (n=6) islet transplantation. Two patients who underwent total pancreatectomy alone (n=2) served as controls. The peak of cytokine production occurred immediately following induction of anaesthesia and during surgery. There was found to be a greater elevation of the following cytokines TNF-alpha (P<0.01), MCP-1 (P=0.0013), MIP-1α (P=0.001), MIP-1β (P=0.00020), IP-10 (P=0.001), IL-8 (P=0.004), IL-1α (P=0.001), IL-1ra (0.0018), IL-10 (P=0.001), GM-CSF (P=0.001), G-CSF (P=0.0198), and Eotaxin (P=0.01) in the allogenic group compared to autografts and controls.
