The current work is part of a larger research study designed to explore environmental stressors, coping, and social supports for Black youth residing in low-resource urban communities. The broad objective of the research is to develop a trauma-informed community intervention to improve adolescent mental health. The initial phase of this university-community research, which entails the YAB, CAB, and university discussion groups, is outlined in this paper. Community engagement and trust are key factors described in the literature when collaborating with communities of color. These themes were reiterated by research partners in this study. The research team created coding terms to identify themes from YAB and CAB transcript data, respectively. YAB themes regarding stressors centered around financial strain, anger, and loss/violence. CAB themes regarding adolescent mental health and resources centered around trauma, trust, and sustainability. Initial steps to utilize the themes identified thus far are described. The unique advantages of an HBCU and CBPR to address mental health disparities in ethnic minority communities are also highlighted.
    There are many clinical associations and potential mechanisms of injury resulting in recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy (RLNP) after thyroidectomy. One possible cause of RLNP is focal intralaryngeal compression of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), which may be associated with the tracheal tube (TT). Therefore, we examined current RLNP rates to investigate potential associations, including intralaryngeal, airway, anaesthetic and anthropometric factors.

    We analysed 1003 patients undergoing thyroid surgery at The Alfred from 2010 to 2017, who had anatomically intact RLNs at the conclusion of thyroidectomy. All included patients underwent pre- and post-operative flexible nasendoscopy. The primary outcome was RLNP rate. We analysed potential associated factors including age, sex, operative time, surgical indication, pathology, American Society of Anaesthesiologists Physical Status, Mallampati scores, body mass index, intubation grade, TT size and specimen weight. The independent risk factors were identified by logistic regression analysis.

    Overall, RLNP occurred in 83 patients (8.3%) of which one was permanent (0.1%). On univariate analysis, RLNP was associated with male sex (P = 0.02), and duration of surgery (P = 0.002). On multivariate analysis, both male sex (P = 0.047) and duration of surgery (P = 0.04) remained significant. Further, factors postulated to cause intralaryngeal compression of the RLN, including TT size, body mass index, intubation grade and Mallampati score, were not significantly associated with RLNP.

    Current available treatment modes against dermatophytoses are often tedious and sometimes unsatisfactory. As an emerging and promising approach, antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) attracts **** attention in the treatment of superficial or localised infections.

    This work investigated the photodynamic efficacy and effects of haematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME) on microconidia of Trichophyton rubrum in vitro.

    The photodynamic killing efficacy of HMME on microconidia of two T rubrum strains was assessed by MTT assay. The effects of HMME-mediated aPDT on the growth of T rubrum and cellular structure of microconidia were also investigated. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and flow cytometry were employed to study the intracellular localisation of HMME and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

    HMME showed no obvious toxicity in the dark, but after light irradiation it inactivated the T rubrum microconidia in a light energy dose-dependent manner, and inhibited the growth of T rubrum. CLSM demonstrated that HMME initially bound to the cell envelop and entered into the cell after light irradiation. HMME-mediated aPDT also damaged the cell cytoplasm and increased the accumulation of intracellular ROS, resulting in cell death.

    Chronic viral hepatitis is a leading cause of worldwide liver-related morbidity and mortality, despite the availability of effective treatments that reduce or prevent complications in most patients. Electronic-health (eHealth) technologies have potential to intervene along the whole cascade of care. We aimed to summarize available literature on eHealth interventions with respect to conventional screening, diagnostic and treatment outcomes in chronic hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV).

    We systematically reviewed MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and international conference abstracts, including studies published from 2009 - 2020. Overall 80 studies were included, covering electronic medical record (EMR) interventions (n=39), telemedicine (n=20), mHealth (n=5), devices (n=4), clinical decision support (n=3), web-based (n=5), social media (n=1) and electronic communication (n=3).

    Compared to standard care, EMR alerts increase screening rates in eligible populations including birth cohort screening in HCV, universal HCV screening in Emergency Departments, ethnic groups with high HBV prevalence, and HBV screening prior to immunosuppression. Direct messaging alerts to providers and automated testing may have a greater effect. No significant difference was found in sustained virological response outcomes between telemedicine and face-to-face management for community, rural and prison cohorts in HCV in the direct acting antiviral era of treatment, with higher patient satisfaction in telemedicine groups.

Nintedanib, a tyrosine-kinase inhibitor, was first developed as an anticancer drug because it suppresses angiogenesis. It was then recognized as an anti-fibrotic agent and approved for the treatment of IPF. On the basis of in vitro studies of the drug, we performed a bioinformatic analysis of all targeted tyrosine kinases with the aim of highlighting common molecular pathways modulated by the drug in LC and IPF. The results show that MAPK, PI3K/AKT, JAK/STAT, TGF-β, VEGF and WNT/β-catenin signalling are the main molecular pathways modulated by the drug. Interestingly, these pathways include that controlled by intercellular adherence junctions (compromised in LC and IPF), and by central carbon metabolism (usually studied more in relation to the pathogenesis of cancer than IPF). On the basis of the tyrosine kinases considered, our bioinformatic analysis highlighted five microRNAs influencing VEGF-A signalling and epithelial to mesenchymal transition mechanisms. Comparison of our results with those of previous studies highlighted correlations between microRNAs and the development of LC and IPF.
    Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a useful tool for the evaluation of structure and function of the kidney, but the image quality can be effected by many factors.

    The objective of this study was to assess the image quality of different OCT systems in OCT imaging of the living kidney.

    One swept-source OCT (SSOCT) of 1300 nm, one spectral domain OCT (SDOCT) of 1300 nm and another of 900 nm were used. A FeO phantom was used to establish the point spread function (PSF). Rat kidneys were imaged for image quality assessment. Light penetration in the kidney and the optical attenuation coefficient were also evaluated. The quantification of uriniferous tubules was carried out via the threshold segmentation of 3D OCT images.

    The quality of kidney images was resolution dependent. SDOCT of 900 nm showed higher peak signal-to noise ratio and dynamic range. The spatial resolution in the light field could be derived from the PSF distribution along three mutually orthogonal axes. In conjunction with the PSF, the Lucy-Richardson algorithm could improve image quality but could not reveal more microstructural information. The penetration depth of 1300 nm was deeper than that of 900 nm. The attenuation coefficient of the kidney was 29 cm

We have analysed a unique RNA-Seq dataset generated on the susceptible rice variety IR24 under combined exposure of Xoo with low 29/21 °C (day/night) and high 35/31 °C (day/night) temperatures. Differentially regulated key genes and pathways in rice plants during both the stress conditions were identified. Differential dynamics of the regulatory network topology showed that WRKY and ERF families of transcription factors play a crucial role during signal crosstalk events in rice plants while responding to combined exposure of Xoo with low temperature vs. Xoo with high temperatures.   • In western countries, one patient on twenty will develop a nosocomial infection during his hospitalization at health care facilities. Classical antibiotics being less and less effective, this phenomenon is expanding year after year. Prevention of bacteria colonization of implantable medical devices constitutes a major medical and financial issue. In this study, we developed an antibacterial coating based on self-assembled Fmoc-tripeptide. Fmoc-FFpY peptides (F phenylalanine; Y tyrosine; p PO42-) are dephosphorylated enzymatically into Fmoc-FFY by action of alkaline phosphatase functionalized silica nanoparticles (NPs@AP), previously deposited on a surface. Fmoc-FFY peptides then self-assemble through π-π stacking interactions, hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions adopting β-sheets secondary structures. The obtained hydrogel coatings show fibrillary structures observed by cryo-scanning electron microscopy with a thickness of few micrometers. At low concentration (≤0.5 mg.mL-1), self-assembled Fmoc-FFY has a superior antibacterial activity than Fmoc-FFpY peptide in solution. After 24 h of incubation, Fmoc-FFY hydrogel coatings fully inhibit the development of Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The antibacterial effect is maintained on an in vitro model of repetitive infection in the case of S. aureus. This coating could serve in infections were Gram positive bacteria are prevalent, e.g., intravascular catheter infections. In the last decade, significant growth in the fields of polymer sciences, nanotechnology, and biotechnology has resulted in the development of new nano-biomaterials. At the interface of nanomaterials and biological systems, the organic and synthetic worlds have merged over the past two decades, forming a new scientific field incorporating nano-material design for biological applications. For this field to evolve, there is a need to understand the dynamic forces and molecular components that shape these interactions and influence function, while also considering safety. While there is still **** to learn about the bio-physicochemical interactions at the interface, we are at a point where pockets of accumulated knowledge can provide a conceptual framework to guide further exploration and inform future product development. This review is intended as a resource for academics, scientists, and physicians working in the field of orthopedics and bone repair.Mixed culture wine fermentations combining species within the Saccharomyces genus have the potential to produce new market tailored wines. They may also contribute to alleviating the effects of climate change in winemaking. Species, such as S. kudriavzevii, show good fermentative properties at low temperatures and produce wines with lower alcohol content, higher glycerol amounts and good aroma. However, the design of mixed culture fermentations combining S. cerevisiae and S. kudriavzevii species requires investigating their ecological interactions under cold temperature regimes. Here, we derived the first ecological model to predict individual and mixed yeast dynamics in cold fermentations. The optimal model combines the Gilpin-Ayala modification to the Lotka-Volterra competitive model with saturable competition and secondary models that account for the role of temperature. The nullcline analysis of the proposed model revealed how temperature shapes ecological dynamics in mixed co-inoculated cold fermentations. For this particular medium and species, successful mixed cultures can be achieved only at specific temperature ranges or by sequential inoculation. The proposed ecological model can be calibrated for different species and provide valuable insights into the functioning of alternative mixed wine fermentations.
    In western countries, one patient on twenty will develop a nosocomial infection during his hospitalization at health care facilities. Classical antibiotics being less and less effective, this phenomenon is expanding year after year. Prevention of bacteria colonization of implantable medical devices constitutes a major medical and financial issue. In this study, we developed an antibacterial coating based on self-assembled Fmoc-tripeptide. Fmoc-FFpY peptides (F phenylalanine; Y tyrosine; p PO42-) are dephosphorylated enzymatically into Fmoc-FFY by action of alkaline phosphatase functionalized silica nanoparticles (NPs@AP), previously deposited on a surface. Fmoc-FFY peptides then self-assemble through π-π stacking interactions, hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions adopting β-sheets secondary structures. The obtained hydrogel coatings show fibrillary structures observed by cryo-scanning electron microscopy with a thickness of few micrometers. At low concentration (≤0.5 mg.mL-1), self-assembled Fmoc-FFY has a superior antibacterial activity than Fmoc-FFpY peptide in solution. After 24 h of incubation, Fmoc-FFY hydrogel coatings fully inhibit the development of Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The antibacterial effect is maintained on an in vitro model of repetitive infection in the case of S. aureus. This coating could serve in infections were Gram positive bacteria are prevalent, e.g., intravascular catheter infections.   • Objective The objective of this study was to address whether preoperative chemotherapy (PECT) plus surgery prolongs overall survival (OS) compared with surgery plus postoperative chemotherapy (POCT) among gastric cancer (GC) patients in Northwest China. Materials and Methods The authors included 157 GC patients confirmed histologically or by gastroscopic pathological examination treated at the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University of China between 2012 and 2018. All patients were followed up by telephone in January 2019 within a 2-week period. The endpoint was death due to GC or its complications. Results Thirty-eight patients received PECT, 41 patients received POCT, 40 patients received surgery alone, and 38 patients received chemotherapy alone. Surgery was performed with R0 resection and subsequent extended lymph node dissection. Chemotherapy was performed with the S-1, oxaliplatin capecitabine regimen. Patients who received PECT had longer OS than those with POCT treatment (hazard ratio = 2.409, p = 0.037). The 5-year OS rate was 32.7% higher in the PECT group than in the POCT group. Conclusions PECT was associated with better OS in GC patients and should be considered by clinicians in GC treatment, although prospective studies are needed for confirmation.Background Colorectal peritoneal carcinomatosis (CRPC) is a primary cause of death in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. In the past, computed tomography (CT) has been the primary method used to evaluate the distribution of CRPC. This study uses 18F-FDG positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) to investigate the distribution characteristics of CRPC. Materials and Methods The distribution characteristics of 46 patients with CRC who were treated in the authors' hospital were retrospectively analyzed using the peritoneal cancer index (PCI). Results The 46 patients in the study showed CRPC involvement in 203 of the 598 abdominal and pelvic regions studied (33.9%, 203/598). The regional proportions of CRPC involvement, from high to low, were as follows region 6 (13.8%), region 0 (10.3%), region 1 (9.9%), region 5 (8.9%), region 7 (8.4%), region 3 (8.4%), region 2 (7.4%), region 4 (7.4%), region 11 (6.9%), region 8 (6.4%), region 12 (5.4%), region 9 (3.4%), and region 10 (3.4%). Thirty-three patients had a PCI of less then 20, and 13 patients had a PCI of ≥20. Those 13 were among the 17 (37% 17/46) who had CRPC involvement in all three regions. According to the location of the primary CRC focus, the 46 patients were divided into three groups right hemicolon, left hemicolon, and rectum. The frequency of CRPC was greater in the rectum group than in the left hemicolon group, and the SUVmax of CRPC was greater in the right hemicolon group than in the left hemicolon group; these differences were statistically significant (p  less then  0.05). Conclusions The distribution of CRPC has certain characteristics in the abdominal and pelvic cavities. Methods Data were collected through a novel phone app. Participants were asked to take photos of meals/snacks on the day of and day after scheduled exercise, enter carbohydrate estimates, and categorize meals as low, typical, or high protein and fat. Glycemia was measured via continuous glucose monitoring. Results Participants (n = 48) were 15-68 years (34 ± 14 years); 40% were female. The phone app plus RFPM© analysis captured 88% ± 29% of participants' estimated total energy expenditure. The majority (70%) of both low-protein and low-fat meals were accurately classified. Only 22% of high-protein meals and 17% of high-fat meals were accurately classified. Forty-nine percent of meals with less then 30 g of carbohydrates were overestimated by an average of 25.7 ± 17.2 g. The majority (64%) of large carbohydrate meals (≥60 g) were underestimated by an average of 53.6 ± 33.8 g. Glycemic response to large carbohydrate meals was similar between participants who underestimated or overestimated carbohydrate content, suggesting that factors beyond carbohydrate counting may impact postprandial glycemic response. Conclusions Accurate estimation of total macronutrients in meals could be leveraged to improve insulin decision support tools and closed loop insulin delivery systems; development of tools to improve macronutrient estimation skills should be considered.Several immunotherapies have demonstrated endogenous insulin preservation in recent-onset type 1 diabetes (T1D). C-peptide 2-h area under the curve means were modeled using analysis of covariance. The experimental treatment group effect for each study, compared with its internal control, was estimated after adjusting for baseline C-peptide and age. Percentage increase in C-peptide over placebo and the absolute difference within study were calculated to compare and contrast effect size among interventions. Low-dose ATG (55% and 103%) and teplizumab (48% and 63%) ranked highest in C-peptide preservation at 1 and 2 years, respectively.   • We found that Bip expression significantly increased in the spinal cord at 7 days after SCI, which served as a pro-survival chaperone. Our results also showed that CHOP expression significantly decreased in the spinal cord at 7 days after SCI, which was identified as a protein involved in apoptosis. Taken together, our data demonstrate that ATF6 may contribute to the functional recovery after SCI in adult zebrafish, via up-regulation of Bip and down-regulation of CHOP to restore the homeostasis of ER.
    Person-centred care has been shown to be cost-effective compared to usual care for several diseases, including acute coronary syndrome, in a short-term time perspective (< 2years). The cost-effectiveness of person-centred care in a longer time perspective is largely unknown.

    To estimate the mid-term cost-effectiveness of person-centred care compared to usual care for patients (< 65) with acute coronary syndrome, using a 2-year and a 5-year time perspective.

    The mid-term cost-effectiveness of person-centred care compared to usual care was estimated by projecting the outcomes observed in a randomized-controlled trial together with data from health registers and data from the scientific literature, 3 years beyond the 2-year follow-up, using the developed simulation model. Probabilistic sensitivity analyses were performed using Monte Carlo simulation.

    Person-centred care entails lower costs and improved effectiveness as compared to usual care, for a 2-year time and a 5-year perspective. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that the likelihoods of the person-centred care being cost-effective compared to usual care were between 80 and 99% and between 75 and 90% for a 2-year and a 5-year time perspective (using a 500,000 SEK/QALY willingness-to-pay threshold).

The aim of this review was to determine the effectiveness of interventional cancer education programs delivered to school students aged 8-19 years. Various databases were searched to identify controlled and uncontrolled studies published in English language articles between January 2000 and January 2020. Selected publications were then critically appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Systematic Reviews. A total of 12 studies meeting these criteria were identified. Of these, eight were randomized, and five included control groups. All of the studies conducted the intervention over the course of 1, 3, or 4 days, and there was no follow-up phase in seven studies. Various modes and materials were used in the delivery of the interventions, including children's books and booklets, expert talks or presentations, videos, discussions, role-playing exercises, hands-on activities, group work, quizzes, and homework. There was some evidence to indicate that the interventions enhanced short-term knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, and behavioral intentions; however, there was less evidence regarding their long-term effectiveness, particularly in terms of help-seeking barriers. Interventional education programs are important to increase knowledge of cancer among school students aged 8-19 years. Decision-makers should consider including relevant topics within the educational curricula. Both healthcare providers and non-educational organizations should work together to support effective cancer interventional education programs for school students as part of their long-term cancer prevention efforts.
    Approximately half of Kawasaki disease patients are expected to have transitioned to adulthood, and an increasing number of patients with cardiovascular sequelae have gotten pregnant. Management of women with Kawasaki disease who have residual coronary artery disease is poorly established. Thus, we conducted detailed analysis of these cases.

    We reviewed 19 pregnancies in 13 such women in two tertiary perinatal facilities, Saitama Medical Center and National Cardiovascular Center. The medical records were reviewed in all women with Kawasaki disease and coronary artery lesion between 1998 and 2015, with regard to age of diagnosis, types of coronary artery lesion, location, previous treatment, pregnancy course and medical management for coronary lesion, cardiac function, and planned mode of delivery.

    Fourteen parturients attempted vaginal delivery, and all but one received neuraxial analgesia, providing stable hemodynamics. Four elective and two emergency cesarean deliveries were performed due to obstetric indications, while one woman required cesarean delivery at preterm due to maternal cardiac indication. Among 14 attempted vaginal deliveries, instrumental vaginal delivery was performed in 50%. Cardiac events were noted in four women, all in post-partum period, such as non-sustained ventricular tachycardia or chest discomfort without ECG changes.     To evaluate the effect of hepatitis D virus (HDV) on hepatitis B virus-hepatocellular carcinoma (HBV-HCC) co-recurrence in patients undergoing living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) for HBV alone or HBV-HDV coinfection.

    Between 2002 and 2019, 254 HBV-HCC patients underwent LDLT. The patients were divided into two groups after the application of the exclusion criteria HBV-HCC (Group B; n = 163) and HBV-HDV-HCC (Group D; n = 31). The aim of this review was to determine the effectiveness of interventional cancer education programs delivered to school students aged 8-19 years. Various databases were searched to identify controlled and uncontrolled studies published in English language articles between January 2000 and January 2020. Selected publications were then critically appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Systematic Reviews. A total of 12 studies meeting these criteria were identified. Of these, eight were randomized, and five included control groups. All of the studies conducted the intervention over the course of 1, 3, or 4 days, and there was no follow-up phase in seven studies. Various modes and materials were used in the delivery of the interventions, including children's books and booklets, expert talks or presentations, videos, discussions, role-playing exercises, hands-on activities, group work, quizzes, and homework. There was some evidence to indicate that the interventions enhanced short-term knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, and behavioral intentions; however, there was less evidence regarding their long-term effectiveness, particularly in terms of help-seeking barriers. We reviewed 19 pregnancies in 13 such women in two tertiary perinatal facilities, Saitama Medical Center and National Cardiovascular Center. The medical records were reviewed in all women with Kawasaki disease and coronary artery lesion between 1998 and 2015, with regard to age of diagnosis, types of coronary artery lesion, location, previous treatment, pregnancy course and medical management for coronary lesion, cardiac function, and planned mode of delivery. Fourteen parturients attempted vaginal delivery, and all but one received neuraxial analgesia, providing stable hemodynamics. Four elective and two emergency cesarean deliveries were performed due to obstetric indications, while one woman required cesarean delivery at preterm due to maternal cardiac indication.   • To compare the safety and efficacy of transfemoral transcaval liver biopsies (TFTC) with that of transjugular liver biopsies (TJLB) at a single tertiary-care institution.

    A retrospective review was performed of 500 consecutive transvenous liver biopsies between December 2010 and December 2018. The cases included 286 TFTC patients at a median age of 54 years old (interquartile range [IQR], 42-63 years of age), 37.4% were female; and 214 TJLB patients at a median age of 55 years old (IQR, 46-61 years of age), 45.4% female. Patient demographic and laboratory data and technical and histopathological success, fluoroscopy times, and complications were recorded. Comparative statistical analyses were performed using a 2-sample test or a Wilcoxon ranked sum test for continuous variables and a chi-square test or Fisher exact test for categorical variables when appropriate.

    Percutaneous reduction, cannulated screw fixation and calcium sulfate cement grafting (PR+CSC) for treatment of displaced and intra-articular calcaneal fractures (DIACFs) is a difficult technique, because the minimally invasive treatment has limited exposure and cannot be used to reduce articular surface under direct vision. The goal of this study was to apply 3D printing technology to preoperative planning and surgery of DIACFs, and to evaluate its effectiveness, feasibility and safety in fracture repair.

    We enrolled 81 patients with DIACFs in the study from August 2015 to August 2017. Patients with DIACFs in our hospital were randomly divided into the 3D printing group (40 cases) and the conventional group (41 cases). The operation duration, blood loss volume and the number of fluoroscopy were compared. Radiological results were evaluated using radiographs and functional results were evaluated using the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score. The complications were also assessed. In addition, we made a questionnaire to verify the usefulness of the 3D printed model for both doctors and patients.

    The operation duration, blood loss volume and the number of fluoroscopy in 3D printing group were significantly less than that in the conventional group. Besides, 3D printing group achieved significantly better radiological results than conventional group both postoperatively and at the final follow-up except the calcaneal width at the final follow-up. The AOFAS score in the 3D printing group was significantly higher than that in the conventional group. In addition, the questionnaire from doctors and patients exhibited high scores of overall satisfaction of the 3D printed models. As for complications, there was no significant difference among the two groups.

    This study suggested the clinical feasibility of PR+CSC assisted by 3D printing technology in the treatment of DIACFs.

    Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors primarily cause tumor-induced osteomalacia, a rare paraneoplastic syndrome, and half occur in soft tissues. There are few reports about the surgical margins of these tumors. This study aimed to clarify the optimal surgical margin for phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors by analyzing radiological and histopathological features.

    This study included eight cases, seven primary and one recurrent, of tumor-induced osteomalacia caused by soft-tissue phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors that were surgically treated between January 2000 and January 2019. We evaluated the radiological and histopathological features of all tumors and investigated the correlation of these features, the surgical margin, and recurrence of hypophosphatemia.

    The tumors were located in superficial (n=5) and deep (n=3) tissues. Six of the eight tumors had a clear boundary, but five had an irregular margin. Three tumors had a hypointense rim on T2-weighted images, indicating fibrous tumor encapsulation. Histopathological analysis revealed infiltrative growth in six of the eight tumors, which correlated with an irregular margin seen on imaging.

Aims of our study were the assessment of the response to exercise in patients with Transthyretin amyloid (ATTR) cardiomyopathy (CA), and the correlation of clinical, biohumoral and echocardiographic parameters with CPET parameters, such as VO2 peak and VE/VCO2 slope. From February 2018 to March 2019, 72 cardiac ATTR patients were prospectively enrolled and underwent a complete clinical, biohumoral, echocardiographic and CPET assessment. All patients completed the exercise stress test protocol, without any adverse event. At CPET, they achieved a mean VO2 peak of 14 mL/Kg/min and a mean VE/VCO2 slope of 31. The blood pressure response to exercise was inadequate in 26 (36%) patients (flat in 25 and hypotensive in 1), while 49/72 patients (69%) showed an inadequate heart rate recovery. In multivariate analysis, s' tricuspidalic was the only independent predictor of VO2 peak, while in the two test models performed to avoid collinearity, both TAPSE and s' tricuspidalic were the strongest independent predictors of VE/VCO2 slope. The improvement of BTH in the perilesional area over time may be the result of targeted treatment interventions and tissue regeneration. Few studies with a limited number of subjects and conflicting results, analyzed the role of CPET in patients with systemic amyloidosis. Aims of our study were the assessment of the response to exercise in patients with Transthyretin amyloid (ATTR) cardiomyopathy (CA), and the correlation of clinical, biohumoral and echocardiographic parameters with CPET parameters, such as VO2 peak and VE/VCO2 slope. From February 2018 to March 2019, 72 cardiac ATTR patients were prospectively enrolled and underwent a complete clinical, biohumoral, echocardiographic and CPET assessment. All patients completed the exercise stress test protocol, without any adverse event. At CPET, they achieved a mean VO2 peak of 14 mL/Kg/min and a mean VE/VCO2 slope of 31. The blood pressure response to exercise was inadequate in 26 (36%) patients (flat in 25 and hypotensive in 1), while 49/72 patients (69%) showed an inadequate heart rate recovery. In multivariate analysis, s' tricuspidalic was the only independent predictor of VO2 peak, while in the two test models performed to avoid collinearity, both TAPSE and s' tricuspidalic were the strongest independent predictors of VE/VCO2 slope. Our data demonstrate the role of right ventricular function as an independent predictor of exercise capacity and ventilatory efficiency in ATTR. The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic impact of standard and novel PET parameters in a multicenter cohort of patients.

    The established PET parameters metabolic tumor volume (MTV), total lesion glycolysis (TLG) and maximal standardized uptake value (SUVmax) as well as the novel parameter tumor asphericity (ASP) were evaluated in a retrospective multicenter cohort of 114 NPC patients with FDG-PET staging, treated with (chemo)radiation at 8 international institutions. Uni- and multivariable Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier analysis with respect to overall survival (OS), event-free survival (EFS), distant metastases-free survival (FFDM), and locoregional control (LRC) was performed for clinical and PET parameters.

    When analyzing metric PET parameters, ASP showed a significant association with EFS (p = 0.035) and a trend for OS gh MTV and ASP improved prognostic value for OS compared to each single variable significantly (p = 0.005 and p = 0.04, respectively). Here, we present a simple method to establish biofilms using the cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC6803 under standard laboratory conditions to be directly used for photosynthetic activity measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We found that glass microfiber filters (GMF) with somewhat coarse surface features provided a suitable skeleton to form Synechocystis PCC6803 biofilms. Being very fragile, untreated GMFs were unable to withstand the processing steps needed for SEM.     Heart failure (HF) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. However, **** of the clinical data is unstructured in the form of radiology reports, while the process of data collection and curation is arduous and time-consuming.

    We utilized a machine learning (ML)-based natural language processing (NLP) approach to extract clinical terms from unstructured radiology reports. Additionally, we investigate the prognostic value of the extracted data in predicting all-cause mortality (ACM) in HF patients.

    This observational cohort study utilized 122,025 thoracoabdominal computed tomography (CT) reports from 11,808 HF patients obtained between 2008 and 2018. 1,560 CT reports were manually annotated for the presence or absence of 14 radiographic findings, in addition to age and gender. Thereafter, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) was trained, validated and tested to determine the presence or absence of these features. Further, the ability of CNN to predict ACM was evaluated using Cox regression analysis on the extracted features.

    11,808 CT reports were analyzed from 11,808 patients (mean age 72.8 ± 14.8 years; 52.7% (6,217/11,808) male) from whom 3,107 died during the 10.6-year follow-up. The CNN demonstrated excellent accuracy for retrieval of the 14 radiographic findings with area-under-the-curve (AUC) ranging between 0.83-1.00 (F1 score 0.84-0.97). Cox model showed the time-dependent AUC for predicting ACM was 0.747 (95% confidence interval [CI] of 0.704-0.790) at 30 days.

The application of immune scoring in evaluating the clinical prognosis of liver cancer patients has not yet been explored. This study sought to clarify the association between immune score and prognosis and construct a clinical nomogram to predict the survival of patients with liver cancer.

    A total of 346 patients were included in our analysis datasets downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) dataset. A Cox proportional-hazards regression model was used to estimate the adjusted hazard ratios (HRs). A nomogram was built based on the results of multivariate analysis and was subjected to bootstrap internal validation. The predictive accuracy and discriminative ability were measured by the concordance index (C-index) and the calibration curve. Through the functional analysis of differential expression of genes with different immune scores, the target genes were screened out.

    Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, university instruction was transitioned online, including an undergraduate nursing clinical course. Charged with developing and executing virtual simulations, an online clinical course was conceived.

    Simulated clinical experiences were crafted using a combination of student preassignments and video-conferencing facilitated by faculty. Each experience included the collective review of a case study and student-developed care plans before viewing and debriefing a series of videos. Students summarized their experience in a weekly written reflection.

    Student feedback was examined through their reflections and verbal responses. The videos served as catalysts for robust discussion. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive related to an interactive experience, a heightened sense of teamwork, and enhanced comprehension by sharing differing perspectives of common experiences.

    This educational innovation was successful in creating an engaging environment that facilitated student learning and a sense of togetherness during a global pandemic. The use of technology enabled the continuity of a productive teaching-learning experience. [J Nurs Educ. 2020;59(9)522-525.].

    Faculty created a telehealth postnatal triage simulation in response to a need for client interaction due to COVID-19 social isolation restrictions.

    Telehealth triage is an inexpensive, engaging teaching strategy and formative assessment method that can be easily created with existing resources and implemented in a postnatal simulation experience.

    Faculty concluded that this telehealth simulation experience is valuable in meeting student clinical learning outcomes and its continued use after social restrictions are removed is recommended.     Using a variety of both web-based and app-based virtual platforms, a nationally accredited fellowship program converted traditional in-seat learning modalities to elearning platforms using both synchronous and asynchronous education.

    In Canada, nursing programs have not kept pace with the growing rates and changing patterns of substance use.

    To get a sense of the current state of substance use education in nursing programs, we conducted a survey of nursing students.

    Our findings indicate that (a) substance use education is minimal, 1 to 5 hours (43%) or none (20%); (b) students had more working knowledge of legal and prescribed substances than illegal ones; (c) of 22 content areas deemed essential for practice, only seven were covered; (d) students were able to identify statements consistent with a harm reduction philosophy despite limited substance use education; and (e) the majority of students wrongfully believed that illegal substances are more harmful than legal substances.

    The complexity of the current health care system has resulted in increasing demands on nurses to act as patient advocates and moral agents. Understanding faculty's experiences teaching ethics is instrumental to deliver ethically competent care. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of nursing faculty teaching ethics content in the classroom setting to prelicensure baccalaureate nursing students.

    This qualitative, descriptive phenomenological design asked 11 nursing faculty with recent experience teaching ethics within prelicensure baccalaureate nursing programs to complete qualitative interviews.

    Participants expressed the importance of teaching ethics in undergraduate nursing curricula but experienced significant challenges. Three main themes were identified in the data analysis Lacking Prior Preparation, Difficult Content, and No Place Holder for Ethics Content.

Through prompt reevaluation and restructuring, virtual platforms can replace in-seat didactic lectures, patient case studies, mentoring, and even simulation, while ensuring program continuation and compliance with accreditation standards. [J Nurs Educ. 2020;59(9)514-517.]. In Canada, nursing programs have not kept pace with the growing rates and changing patterns of substance use. To get a sense of the current state of substance use education in nursing programs, we conducted a survey of nursing students. Our findings indicate that (a) substance use education is minimal, 1 to 5 hours (43%) or none (20%); (b) students had more working knowledge of legal and prescribed substances than illegal ones; (c) of 22 content areas deemed essential for practice, only seven were covered; (d) students were able to identify statements consistent with a harm reduction philosophy despite limited substance use education; and (e) the majority of students wrongfully believed that illegal substances are more harmful than legal substances. The complexity of the current health care system has resulted in increasing demands on nurses to act as patient advocates and moral agents. Understanding faculty's experiences teaching ethics is instrumental to deliver ethically competent care. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of nursing faculty teaching ethics content in the classroom setting to prelicensure baccalaureate nursing students. This qualitative, descriptive phenomenological design asked 11 nursing faculty with recent experience teaching ethics within prelicensure baccalaureate nursing programs to complete qualitative interviews. Participants expressed the importance of teaching ethics in undergraduate nursing curricula but experienced significant challenges. Three main themes were identified in the data analysis Lacking Prior Preparation, Difficult Content, and No Place Holder for Ethics Content. Intentional curriculum design incorporating ethics content is necessary for the preparation of prelicensure nursing students, along with formal and informal opportunities for faculty to explore ethics including philosophical underpinnings.
