  • The extracellular matrix glycosaminoglycan hyaluronan (HA) accumulates in human and mouse islets during the onset of autoimmune type 1 diabetes (T1D). HA plays a critical role in T1D pathogenesis, as spontaneous disease is blocked in **** fed the HA synthesis inhibitor 4-methylumbelliferone (4MU). The present study demonstrates the involvement of HA in T cell-mediated autoimmune responses to transplanted islets and in in vivo and in vitro T cell activation. Scaffolded islet implants (SIs) loaded with RIP-mOVA mouse islets expressing chicken ovalbumin (OVA) on their β cells were grafted into T and B cell-deficient RIP-mOVA ****, which subsequently received CD4+ T cells from DO11.10 transgenic **** bearing OVA peptide-specific T cell receptors (TcRs), followed by injection of OVA peptide to induce an immune response to the OVA-expressing islets. By affinity histochemistry (AHC), HA was greatly increased in grafted islets with T cell infiltrates (compared to islets grafted into **** lacking T cells) and a portio. Collectively, our results demonstrate that T cell-derived HA plays a significant role in T cell immune responses, and that expression of T cell HAS isoforms changes in a locale-specific manner during in vivo priming and functional phases of the T cell response. In this article, we report the observation of an air-encapsulating elastic mechanism of Dandelion spherical seed heads, namely blowballs, when submerged underwater. This peculiarity seems to be fortuitous since Taraxacum is living outside water; nevertheless, it could become beneficial for a better survival under critical conditions, e.g. of temporary flooding. The scaling of the volume of the air entrapped suggests its fractal nature with a dimension of 2.782 and a fractal air volume fraction of 4.82 × 10-2 m0.218, resulting in nominal air volume fractions in the range of 14-23%. This aspect is essential for the optimal design of bioinspired materials made up of Dandelion-like components. The miniaturization of such components leads to an increase in the efficiency of the air encapsulation up to the threshold (efficiency = 1) achieved for an optimal critical size. Thus, the optimal design is accomplished using small elements, with the optimal size, rather than using larger elements in a lower number. The described phenomenon, interesting per se, also brings bioinspired insights toward new related technological solutions for underwater air-trapping and air-bubbles transportation, e.g. the body surface of a man could allow an apnea (air consumption of 5-10 l/min) of about 10 min if it is covered by a material made up of a periodic repetition of Dandelion components of diameter ≅ 18 μm and having a total thickness of about 3-6 cm.Over the years, scientific and legal scholars have called for the implementation of algorithms (e.g., statistical methods) in forensic science to provide an empirical foundation to experts' subjective conclusions. Despite the proliferation of numerous approaches, the practitioner community has been reluctant to apply them operationally. Reactions have ranged from passive skepticism to outright opposition, often in favor of traditional experience and expertise as a sufficient basis for conclusions. In this paper, we explore why practitioners are generally in opposition to algorithmic interventions and how their concerns might be overcome. We accomplish this by considering issues concerning human-algorithm interactions in both real world domains and laboratory studies as well as issues concerning the litigation of algorithms in the American legal system. Taking into account those issues, we propose a strategy for approaching the implementation of algorithms, and the different ways algorithms can be implemented, in a responsible and practical manner.
Knowing the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies across geographic regions before vaccine administration is one key piece of knowledge to achieve herd immunity. While people of all ages, occupations, and communities are at risk of getting infected with SARS-CoV-2, the health care workers (HCWs) are possibly at the highest risk. Most seroprevalence surveys with HCWs conducted worldwide have been limited to Europe, North America, and East Asia. We aimed to understand how the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies varied across these geographic regions among HCWs based on the available evidences.

By searching through PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases, eligible studies published from January 1, 2020 to January 15, 2021 were included for the systematic review and meta-analysis. The random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled proportion of IgG seropositive HCWs. Publication bias was assessed by funnel plot and confirmed by Egger's test. Heterogeneity was quantified using Icreased transmission.

Opium and its pyrolysates have been investigated as potential carcinogenic material through several studies in different body systems; however, the results were controversial and no consensus was achieved with this regard. Thus, we aimed to systematically review and meta-analyze all existed evidence regarding association between opium consumption and cancer.

Four major electronic databases including ISI Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Embase along with Magiran and SID were searched thoroughly for all published articles from inception up to September 25, 2020. All studies were appraised critically by Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS) checklist. Relevant demographic data and the intended results of the selected studies were extracted and their Odds ratios (OR) were pooled using Comprehensive Meta-analysis (CMA). The cumulative risk of opium for developing different cancers was calculated.

34 studies comprised of 18,230 individuals were entered in our systematic review and finally 32 publications were enrolled in meta-analysis. Overall, using the random effects model, opium consumption was associated with increased rate of malignancies in both minimally[OR=4.14 95%CI=(3.32-5.15)] and fully adjusted [OR=4.35 95%CI=(3.36-5.62)] analyses. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/cddo-im.html Moreover, using random effects fully adjusted model, the subgroup analysis revealed increased risk for larynx [OR=9.58 95%CI=(6.31-14.53)], respiratory [OR=9.02 95%CI=(6.27-12.96)], head and neck [OR=8•03 95%CI=(4.03-16.00)], and colon [OR=5.58 95%CI=(3.14-9.92)] cancers for opium consumers compared to non-consumers.

Opium consumption is highly associated with all reported types of cancers, especially in fully adjusted model; however, basic pathophysiology should be further investigated.

  • Becoming critically ill represents not just a great upheaval for the patient in question, but also for the patient's closest family. In recent years, there has been a change in how the quality of the public health service is measured. There is currently a focus on how patients and their families perceive the quality of treatment and care. It can be challenging for patients to evaluate their stay in an intensive care unit (ICU) due to illness and treatment. Earlier studies show that the perceptions of the family and the patient may concur. It is important, therefore, to ascertain the family's level of satisfaction with the ICU stay. The aim of the study was to describe how the family evaluate their satisfaction with the ICU stay. A further aim was to identify which demographic variables were associated with differences in family satisfaction.

The study had a cross-sectional design. A sample of 57 family members in two ICUs in Norway completed the questionnaire Family satisfaction in the intensive care unitdentified as having potential for improvement. The results showed that some of the family demographic variables were significant for family satisfaction. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/nsc-23766.html The findings are clinically relevant since the results can strengthen intensive care nurses' knowledge when meeting the family of the intensive care patient.
Recent studies have reported the effects of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components on atrial fibrillation (AF), but the results remain controversial. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the relationship between MetS and AF risk.

Studies were searched from the Cochrane library, PubMed, and Embase databases through May 2020. Adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and its corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were extracted and then pooled by using a random effects model.

A total of 6 observational cohort studies were finally included. In the pooled analysis, MetS was associated with an increased risk of AF (HR 1.57; 95% CI 1.40-1.77; P < 0.01). And the components of MetS including abdominal obesity (HR 1.37; 95% CI 1.36-1.38; P < 0.01), elevated blood pressure (HR 1.56; 95% CI 1.46-1.66; P < 0.01), elevated fasting glucose (HR 1.18; 95% CI 1.15-1.21; P < 0.01) and low high density cholesterol (HDL) (HR 1.18; 95% CI 1.06-1.32; P < 0.01) was also associated with an increased risk of AF, while high triglyceride (HR 0.99; 95% CI 0.87-1.11, P = 0.82) was not.

Our present meta-analysis suggested that MetS, as well as its components including abdominal obesity, elevated blood pressure, elevated fasting glucose and low HDL cholesterol were associated with an increase in the risk of AF.

The impact of reduction in glycemic excursion on coronary plaques remains unknown. This study aimed to elucidate whether a dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor could reduce the glycemic excursion and stabilize the coronary plaques compared with conventional management in coronary artery disease (***) patients with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT).

This was a multicenter, randomized controlled trial including *** patients with IGT under lipid-lowering therapy receiving either vildagliptin (50mg once a day) or no medication (control group) regarding glycemic treatment. The primary endpoint was changes in the minimum fibrous cap thickness and lipid arc in non-significant native coronary plaques detected by optical coherence tomography at 6months after intervention. Glycemic variability expressed as the mean amplitude of glycemic excursion (MAGE) measured with a continuous glucose monitoring system was evaluated before and 6months after intervention.

Genetic connectedness is a critical component of genetic evaluation as it assesses the comparability of predicted genetic values across units. Genetic connectedness also plays an essential role in quantifying the linkage between reference and validation sets in whole-genome prediction. Despite its importance, there is no user-friendly software tool available to calculate connectedness statistics.

We developed the GCA R package to perform genetic connectedness analysis for pedigree and genomic data. The software implements a large collection of various connectedness statistics as a function of prediction error variance or variance of unit effect estimates. The GCA R package is available at GitHub and the source code is provided as open source.

The GCA R package allows users to easily assess the connectedness of their data. It is also useful to determine the potential risk of comparing predicted genetic values of individuals across units or measure the connectedness level between training and testing sets in genomic prediction.

Red clover (Trifolium pratense) is globally used as a fodder plant due its high nutritional value and soil improving qualities. In response to mowing, red clover exhibits specific morphological traits to compensate the loss of biomass. The morphological reaction is well described, but the underlying molecular mechanisms and its role for plants grown in the field are unclear.

Here, we characterize the global transcriptional response to mowing of red clover by comparing plants grown under greenhouse conditions with plants growing on agriculturally used fields. Unexpectedly, we found that biotic and abiotic stress related changes of plants grown in the field overlay their regrowth related transcriptional changes and characterized transcription related protein families involved in these processes. Further, we can show that gibberellins, among other phytohormones, also contribute to the developmental processes related to regrowth after biomass-loss.

Our findings show that massive biomass loss triggers less transcriptional changes in field grown plants than their struggle with biotic and abiotic stresses and that gibberellins also play a role in the developmental program related to regrowth after mowing in red clover.

  • We present a new nozzle design for an improved brilliance of laser-produced gas plasmas emitting in the soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet spectral regime. A rotationally asymmetric gas jet is formed by employing two closely adjacent nozzles facing each other under the angle of 45°. The generated three-dimensional gas density distribution is tomographically analyzed using a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor. A comparison with numerical simulations accomplishes an optimization of the nozzle arrangement. The colliding gas jets create an optimized gas distribution with increased density, leading to a significant brilliance enhancement of the extreme ultraviolet, soft X-ray plasma.Purposely tailored thin film stacks sustaining surface waves have been utilized to create a unique link between emission angle and wavelength of fluorescent dye molecules. The knowledge of the thin film stack's properties allows us to derive the intrinsically emitted luminescence spectrum as well as to gain information about the orientation of fluorophores from angularly resolved experiments. This corresponds to replacing all the equipment necessary for polarized spectroscopy with a single smart thin film stack, potentially enabling single shot analyses in the future. The experimental results agree well with those from other established techniques, when analyzing the Rubrene derivative in a 2,4,6-tris(biphenyl-3-yl)-1,3,5-triazine (T2T) host used for the fabrication of optimized organic light-emitting diodes. The findings illustrate how resonant layered stacks can be applied to integrated spectroscopic analyses. We present a bi-directionally 793-nm diode-pumped Tm3+, Ho3+-codoped silica polarization maintaining double-clad all-fiber laser based on a single-oscillator architecture emitting 195 W at 2.09 µm in continuous wave mode of operation, with a beam quality near the diffraction limit (M2 = 1.08). The power scaling of the laser is only pump-power-limited in the range of the total available pump power (540 W).A combination of advanced light engineering concepts enables a substantial improvement in photon extraction efficiency of micro-cavity-based single-photon sources in the telecom O-band at ∼1.3 µm. We employ a broadband bottom distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) and a top DBR formed in a dielectric micropillar with an additional circular Bragg grating in the lateral plane. This device design includes a doped layer in pin-configuration to allow for electric carrier injection. It provides broadband (∼8-10 nm) emission enhancement with an overall photon-extraction efficiency of ∼83% into the upper hemisphere and photon-extraction efficiency of ∼79% within numerical aperture NA=0.7. The efficiency of photon coupling to a single-mode fiber reaches 11% for SMF28 fiber (with NA=0.12), exceeds 22% for 980HP fiber (with NA=0.2) and reaches ∼40% for HNA fiber (with NA=0.42) as demonstrated by 3D finite-difference time-domain modeling.Focusing light into highly disordered biological tissue is a major challenge in optical microscopy and biomedical imaging due to scattering. However, correlations in the scattering matrix, known as "memory effects", can be used to improve imaging capabilities. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Hesperadin.html Here we discuss theoretically and numerically the possibility to achieve three-dimensional ultrashort laser focusing and scanning inside forward scattering media, beyond the scattering mean free path, by simultaneously taking advantage of the angular and the chromato-axial memory effects. The numerical model is presented in details, is validated within the state of the art theoretical and experimental framework and is finally used to propose a scheme for focusing ultra-short laser pulses in depth through forward scattering media. We experimentally present mid-infrared Raman soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) process in a Tm-doped fiber amplifier using sideband-suppressed conventional solitons as seed pulses. The strong Kelly sidebands of the soliton oscillator were efficiently suppressed (more than 21 dB) using a home-made all-fiber Lyot filter (AFLF). As a result, the Raman solitons with a continuously tunable wavelength of 1.95-2.34 µm were achieved, with a high soliton energy conversion of >93% over the range of 1.95-2.24 µm. The conversion efficiency and tunable range of Raman solitons were both significantly improved, comparing to the same amplifier seeded with sideband-unsuppressed pulses. We propose a helically twisted pig-nose-shaped core microstructured optical fiber (HPC-MOF) for orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode generation. It comprises seven air-hole rings hexagonally arranged with two air holes and one air-hole ring replaced, forming two cores in a line 3 µm from the fiber center and one ring-shaped core. The fiber is helically twisted along the rotation axis. In this fiber, supermodes in inner dual-core can be coupled to high-order modes in outer ring-core, yielding OAM ring-shaped modes at different certain wavelengths, and various OAM modes at different twist rates were investigated in this paper. We demonstrate the distinct coupling differences of symmetric and antisymmetric supermodes in inner dual-core when the supermode coupled to ring-core mode. A modal matching rule is presented to characterize the coupling differences, which is suitable for describing supermode coupling characteristics in HPC-MOFs. Compared to conventional methods, these properties indicate that the fiber can generate higher-order OAM modes and more easily integrate into all-fiber optical communication systems, with potential in OAM generators, light-controlling devices, and integrated optics applications. We report a high efficiency Brillouin random fiber laser (BRFL) enabled by a random fiber grating (RFG) with demonstration of replica symmetry breaking (RSB). The RFG was characterized by optical coherence tomography (OCT) method, which measured the spatially resolved reflectivity of RFG by a tunable delay line. Multiple narrow linewidth peaks appeared in reflection spectrum of RFG, created by frozen scattering centers acting as narrow linewidth filters to select random modes in random fiber lasers based on Brillouin gain. With the scattering from RFG as disordered feedback, a BRFL with slope efficiency of 29.3% and lasing threshold of 10.2 mW was demonstrated with 1 kHz linewidth. Intensity dynamics show that RFG can reduce the noise of BRFL with a symmetric phase portrait, indicating the increased mean path length and coherence time of the Stokes photons. The probability distribution of the Parisi overlap parameter of intensity fluctuation spectra from trace to trace reveal a photonic spin-glass phase with RSB in the RFG enabled BRFL, providing a photonic platform to study the photon glassy behavior of random fiber lasers.

  • One of the most characteristic properties of many vertebrate neural systems is the layered organization of different cell types. This cytoarchitecture exists in the cortex, the retina, the hippocampus, and many other parts of the central nervous system. The developmental mechanisms of neural layer formation have been subject to substantial experimental efforts. Here, we provide a general computational model for cortical layer formation in 3D physical space. We show that this multiscale, agent-based model, comprising two distinct stages of apoptosis, can account for the wide range of neuronal numbers encountered in different cortical areas and species. Our results demonstrate the phenotypic richness of a basic state diagram structure. Importantly, apoptosis allows for changing the thickness of one layer without automatically affecting other layers. Therefore, apoptosis increases the flexibility for evolutionary change in layer architecture. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/lanifibranor-iva-337.html Notably, slightly changed gene regulatory dynamics recapitulate the characteristic properties observed in neurodevelopmental diseases. Overall, we propose a novel computational model using gene-type rules, exhibiting many characteristics of normal and pathological cortical development.Mechanical models of adipose tissue are important for various medical applications including cosmetics, injuries, implantable drug delivery systems, plastic surgeries, biomechanical applications such as computational human body models for surgery simulation, and blunt impact trauma prediction. This article presents a comprehensive review of in vivo experimental approaches that aimed to characterize the mechanical properties of adipose tissue, and the resulting constitutive models and model parameters identified. In particular, this study examines the material behavior of adipose tissue, including its nonlinear stress-strain relationship, viscoelasticity, strain hardening and softening, rate-sensitivity, anisotropy, preconditioning, failure behavior, and temperature dependency. This study investigated impact-induced strain fields within brain tissue surrogates having different cortical gyrification. Two elastomeric surrogates, one representative of a lissencephalic brain and the other of a gyrencephalic brain, were drop impacted in unison at four different heights and in two different orientations. Each surrogate contained a radiopaque speckle pattern that was used to calculate strain fields. Two different approaches, digital image correlation (DIC) and a particle tracking method, enabled comparisons of full-field and localized strain responses. The DIC results demonstrated increased localized deviations from the mean strain field in the surrogate with a gyrified cortex. Particle tracking algorithms, defining four-node quadrilateral elements, were used to investigate the differences in the strain response of three regions the base of a sulcus, the adjacent gyrus, and the internal capsule of the surrogates. The results demonstrated that the strains in the cortex were concentrated at the sulcal base. This mechanical mechanism of increased strain is consistent with neurodegenerative markers observed in postmortem analyses, suggesting a potential mechanism of local damage due to strain amplification at the sulcal bases in gyrencephalic brains. This strain amplification mechanism may be responsible for cumulative neurodegeneration from repeated subconcussive impacts. The observed results suggest that lissencephalic animal models, such as rodents, would not have the same modes of injury present in a gyrencephalic brain, such as that of a human. As such, a shift toward representative mild traumatic brain injury animal models having gyrencephalic cortical structures should be strongly considered.Balloon dilation catheters are often used to quantify the physiological state of peristaltic activity in tubular organs and comment on their ability to propel fluid which is important for healthy human function. To fully understand this system's behavior, we analyzed the effect of a solitary peristaltic wave on a fluid-filled elastic tube with closed ends. A reduced order model that predicts the resulting tube wall deformations, flow velocities, and pressure variations is presented. This simplified model is compared with detailed fluid-structure three-dimensional (3D) immersed boundary (IB) simulations of peristaltic pumping in tube walls made of hyperelastic material. The major dynamics observed in the 3D simulations were also displayed by our one-dimensional (1D) model under laminar flow conditions. Using the 1D model, several pumping regimes were investigated and presented in the form of a regime map that summarizes the system's response for a range of physiological conditions. Finally, the amount of work done during a peristaltic event in this configuration was defined and quantified. The variation of elastic energy and work done during pumping was found to have a unique signature for each regime. An extension of the 1D model is applied to enhance patient data collected by the device and find the work done for a typical esophageal peristaltic wave. This detailed characterization of the system's behavior aids in better interpreting the clinical data obtained from dilation catheters. Additionally, the pumping capacity of the esophagus can be quantified for comparative studies between disease groups.Complaints of severe damage by whiteflies in soybean fields containing genetically engineered (GE) varieties led us to investigate the role of transgenic soybean varieties expressing resistance to some insects (Cry1Ac Bt toxin) and to herbicide (glyphosate) on the population growth and feeding behavior of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) MEAM1 (Hemiptera Aleyrodidae). In the laboratory, the whiteflies reared on the GE Bt soybeans had a net reproductive rate (R0) 100% higher and intrinsic rate of population increase (rm) 15% higher than those reared on non-GE soybeans. The increased demographic performance was associated with a higher lifetime fecundity. In electrical penetration graphs, the whiteflies reared on the GE soybeans had fewer probes and spent 50% less time before reaching the phloem phase from the beginning of the first successful probe, indicating a higher risk of transmission of whitefly-borne viruses. Data from Neotropical fields showed a higher population density of B. tabaci on two soybean varieties expressing glyphosate resistance and Cry1Ac Bt toxin.

  • Currently, the availability of a wide variety of universal adhesives makes it difficult for clinicians to choose the correct system for specific bonding situations to dentin substrate. This study aimed to determine whether there are any alternative techniques or additional strategies available to enhance the bond strength of universal adhesives to dentin through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Two reviewers executed a literature search up to September 2020 in four electronic databases PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Scopus, and EMBASE. Only in vitro studies that reported the dentin bond strength of universal adhesives using additional strategies were included. An analysis was carried out using Review Manager Software version 5.3.5 (The Nordic Cochrane Centre, The Cochrane Collaboration, Copenhagen, Denmark). The methodological quality of each in vitro study was assessed according to the parameters of a previous systematic. A total of 5671 potentially relevant studies were identified. After title and abstrave techniques or additional strategies may be beneficial for improving their bonding performance to dentin. This research received no external funding. Considering that this systematic review was carried out only with in vitro studies, registration was not performed. In this paper, we consider the space-time of a charged mass endowed with an angular momentum. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/CHIR-258.html The geometry is described by the exact Kerr-Newman solution of the Einstein equations. The peculiar symmetry, though exact, is usually described in terms of the gravito-magnetic field originated by the angular momentum of the source. A typical product of this geometry is represented by the generalized Sagnac effect. We write down the explicit form for the right/left asymmetry of the times of flight of two counter-rotating light beams along a circular trajectory. Letting the circle shrink to the origin the asymmetry stays finite. Furthermore it becomes independent both from the charge of the source (then its electromagnetic field) and from Newton's constant it is then associated only to the symmetry produced by the gravitomagnetic field. When introducing, for the source, the spin of a Fermion, the lowest limit of the Heisenberg uncertainty formula for energy and time appears.Malnutrition and intestinal parasites continue to have serious impacts on growth and cognitive development of children in Angola. A longitudinal four-arm randomized parallel trial was conducted to investigate if deworming with a single annual dose of albendazole (annual-ALB) or a four-monthly test-and-treat (4TT) intestinal parasites approach at individual or household levels improve nutritional outcomes of pre-school children in Bengo province. Children with intestinal parasites (n = 121) were randomly assigned (1111) to arm A1 annual-ALB*individual level; A2 annual-ALB*household level; A3 4TT*individual; and A4 4TT*household level. At baseline, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 months of follow-up, growth was assessed by height, weight, height-for-age, weight-for-height, weight-for-age, and mid-upper arm circumference. Intention-to-treat analysis was done using non-parametric approach, mixed effect models, and generalized estimating equations (GEE). Initially, 57% and 26% of the children were infected by Giardia lamblia and Ascaris lumbricoides, respectively. This study did not show that a 4TT intestinal parasites approach results on better growth outcomes of children (height, weight, HAZ, WAZ, WHZ and MUACZ) when compared with annual ALB, with exception of height and WHZ using GEE model at 5% level. Positive temporal effects on most nutrition outcomes were observed. Implementing a longitudinal study in a poor setting is challenging and larger sample sizes and 'pure and clean' data are difficult to obtain. Nevertheless, learned lessons from this intensive study may contribute to future scientific research and to tailor multidisciplinary approaches to minimize malnutrition and infections in resource-poor countries. This paper studies the effective dielectric properties of heterogeneous materials of the type particle inclusions in a host medium, using the Maxwell Garnet and the Bruggeman theory. The results of the theories are applied at polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films, nanoparticles (NP)-doped LCs, and developed for NP-doped PDLC films. The effective permittivity of the composite was simulated at sufficiently high frequency, where the permittivity is constant, obtaining results on its dependency on the constituents' permittivity and concentrations. The two models are compared and discussed. The method used for simulating the doped PDLC retains its general character and can be applied for other similar multiphase composites. The methods can be used to calculate the effective permittivity of a LC composite, or, in the case of a composite in which one of the phases has an unknown permittivity, to extract it from the measured composite permittivity. The obtained data are necessary in the design of the electrical circuits.Herein, we investigated the surface characterization and biocompatibility of a denture-lining material containing Cnidium officinale extracts and its antifungal efficacy against Candida albicans. To achieve this, a denture-lining material containing various concentrations of C. officinale extract and a control group without C. officinale extract were prepared. The surface characterization and biocompatibility of the samples were investigated. In addition, the antifungal efficacy of the samples on C. albicans was investigated using spectrophotometric growth and a LIVE/DEAD assay. The results revealed that there was no significant difference between the biocompatibility of the experimental and control groups (p > 0.05). However, there was a significant difference between the antifungal efficiency of the denture material on C. albicans and that of the control group (p less then 0.05), which was confirmed by the LIVE/DEAD assay. These results indicate the promising potential of the C. officinale extract-containing denture-lining material as an antifungal dental material. There was an error in the original article [...].

  • In air testing, the sensor exhibited an immense sensitivity of 0.973 kΩ/%RH and excellent linearity of ∼0.98 with a change of humidity from 30 to 73 %RH, and a constant resistance deviation with an inaccuracy rate of 0.13% over 400 h of continual measurements. In oil, the sensor showed a high sensitivity of 1.596 kΩ/%RH and stable repeatability for an RH concentration range between 34 and 63 %RH. The obtained results via the sensor interface were very similar to those measured with a digital multimeter, denoting that our developed total sensor system is a very promising candidate for real-time monitoring of the operational status of power transformers.Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) are used extensively for the detection and quantification of biomolecules in clinical diagnostics as well as in basic research. Although broadly used, the inherent complexities of ELISAs preclude their utility for straightforward point-of-need testing, where speed and simplicity are essential. With this in mind, we developed a bioluminescence-based immunoassay format that provides a sensitive and simple method for detecting biomolecules in clinical samples. We utilized a ternary, split-NanoLuc luciferase complementation reporter consisting of two small peptides (11mer, 13mer) and a 17 kDa polypeptide combined with a luminogenic substrate to create a complete, shelf-stable add-and-read assay detection reagent. Directed evolution was used to optimize reporter constituent sequences to impart chemical and thermal stability, as well as solubility, while formulation optimization was applied to stabilize an all-in-one reagent that can be reconstituted in aqueous buffers or sample matrices. The result of these efforts is a robust, first-generation bioluminescence-based homogenous immunoassay reporter platform where all assay components can be configured into a stable lyophilized cake, supporting homogeneous, rapid, and sensitive one-step biomolecule quantification in complex human samples. This technology represents a promising alternative immunoassay format with significant potential to bring critical diagnostic molecular detection testing closer to the point-of-need.Highly soluble d8-d10 heteronuclear phosphors afford an alternative approach to achieve high-efficiency organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) through a solution process. In this work, four highly phosphorescent d8-d10 heteronuclear complexes with significant Pt-Au interactions were prepared. By judicious selection of sterically hindered and π-conjugated substituents in triphosphine ligands, the phosphorescence is dramatically promoted through effectively prohibiting nonradiative thermal relaxation with an efficiency of 0.94-0.99 in doping films. Exploiting highly emissive Pt-Au complexes as phosphorescent dopants, ultrahigh-efficiency solution-processed OLEDs were attained. The peak current efficiency, power efficiency, and external quantum efficiency are 96.2 cd A-1, 65.0 lm W-1, and 26.4% for the green-emitting PtAu2 phosphor and 68.6 cd A-1, 42.5 lm W-1, and 25.1% for the orange-emitting Pt2Au phosphor, which represent the state-of-art for solution-processed OLEDs based on non-iridium phosphors. The combination of ion/ion chemistry with commercially available ion mobility/mass spectrometry systems has allowed rich structural information to be obtained for gaseous protein ions. Recently, the simple modification of such an instrument with an electrospray reagent source has allowed three-dimensional gas-phase interrogation of protein structures through covalent and noncovalent interactions coupled with collision cross section measurements. https://www.selleckchem.com/ However, the energetics of these processes have not yet been studied quantitatively. In this work, previously developed Monte Carlo simulations of ion temperatures inside traveling wave ion guides are used to characterize the energetics of the transition state of activated ubiquitin cation/sulfo-benzoyl-HOAt reagent anion long-lived complexes formed via ion/ion reactions. The ΔH‡ and ΔS‡ of major processes observed from collisional activation of long-lived gas-phase ion/ion complexes, namely collision induced unfolding (CIU), covalent bond formation, or neutral loss of the anionic reagent via intramolecular proton transfer, were determined. Covalent bond formation via ion/ion complexes was found to be significantly lower energy compared to unfolding and bond cleavage. The ΔG‡ values of activation of all three processes lie between 55 and 75 kJ/mol, easily accessible with moderate collisional activation. Bond formation is favored over reagent loss at lower activation energies, whereas reagent loss becomes competitive at higher collision energies. Though the ΔG‡ values between CIU of a precursor ion and covalent bond formation of its ion/ion product complex are comparable, our data suggest covalent bond formation does not require extensive isomerization.Aβ1-42-conjugated magnetic nanoparticles, Aβ1-42@MNP, were prepared by covalently coupling Aβ1-42 to hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified magnetic nanoparticles via N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N'-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC). Aβ1-42's high binding capacity to glycosyl groups facilitates Aβ1-42@MNP composite to be a promising selective adsorbent for glycoproteins in egg whites. In our study, under conditions of pH 4.0, the adsorption efficiency of Aβ1-42@MNP composite for ovalbumin (100 μg mL-1) was 98.4% and its maximum adsorption capacity was 344.8 mg g -1; under the condition of pH 4.0 and 200 mmol L-1 NaCl, its adsorption efficiencies for ovalbumin and ovotransferrin were 96.9% and 60.0%, respectively. According to these primary data, in practice, ovalbumin was removed from egg white by Aβ1-42@MNP composite at pH 4.0 (step I), and then after adding NaCl until the final salt concentration reached 200 mmol L-1 (pretreated egg white), we utilized the same adsorbent to further isolate/purify glycoproteins (step II). SDS-PAGE results showed that Aβ1-42@MNP composite could largely remove ovalbumin in step I and could isolate/purify the remaining ovalbumin and ovotransferrin in step II. LC-MS/MS analysis results showed that the removal of ovalbumin reduced its percentage in egg white samples from 32.93% to 11.05% in step I and the remaining ovalbumin and ovotransferrin were enriched in step II, where the final percentage reached 11.6% and 12.6%, respectively. In summary, 81 protein species were identified after two-step extraction with Aβ1-42@MNP on egg white, while only 46 protein species were identified directly from raw egg white without any pretreatment. This work well illustrates the excellent adsorption performance of Aβ1-42@MNP composite to glycoproteins and its potential in the application of proteomic studies on low-abundance proteins in egg white.

  • Classical circulating LyC6high murine monocytes differentiate progressively from inflammatory tissue monocytes to mature macrophages (Mϕ) after entry into gut mucosa. This protocol provides a two-step in vitro culture method that replicates the human monocyte maturation cascade. First, purified circulating CD14+ CD16- monocytes exposed to granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interferon gamma (IFNγ), and interleukin 23 (IL-23) differentiate into tissue-like inflammatory monocytes. Next, addition of transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) plus interleukin 10 (IL-10) promotes their maturation into tissue-like Mϕ. Methods to sort these cells after culture are also provided. Here, a periosteum mimicking bone aid (PMBA) with similar structure and function to natural periosteum is developed by electrospinning photocrosslinkable methacrylated gelatin (GelMA), l-arginine-based unsaturated poly(ester amide) (Arg-UPEA), and methacrylated hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (nHAMA). • The device was linear (R2 = 0.925) with a low dispersion of the values (n = 11) with a cut-off of 7.1 for hypoxia in vivo and ex vivo. Statistics with one-way ANOVA (α = 0.05), shows statistical differences between hypoxia and normoxia states and the good performance of the pH sensor, which demonstrated good agreement with the standard device. The sensor was stable and functional after 18 months. The excellent results demonstrated the feasibility of the sensors in real-time monitoring of intramuscular tissue and blood for medical applications. We have investigated the expression of nucleolin (NCL) in liquid biopsies of prostate cancer (PCa) patients and healthy controls to determine its correlation with tumor prognosis. To detect NCL we used a modified AS1411 aptamer designated by AS1411-N5. In presence of NCL, AS1411-N5 increases the fluorescence by assuming a G-quadruplex (G4) structure, while in the absence of NCL the fluorescence signal remains quenched. The structural characterization of AS1411-N5 was performed by biophysical studies, which demonstrated the formation of G4 parallel conformation in the presence of 100 mM K+ and the ability to recognize NCL with high affinity (KD = 138.1 ± 5.5 nM). Furthermore, the clinical relevance of NCL in PCa liquid biopsies was assessed by using an NCL-based ELISA assay. The protein was measured in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) cell lysate of 158 individuals, including PCa patients and healthy individuals. The results depicted a remarkable increase of NCL levels in the PBMC's lysate of PCa patients (mean of 626.1 pg/mL whole blood) when compared to healthy individuals (mean of 198.5 pg/mL whole blood). The ELISA results also provided evidence for the usefulness of determining NCL levels in advanced PCa stages. Furthermore, a microfluidic assay showed the ability of AS1411-N5 in recognizing NCL in spiked human plasma samples. The illicit consumption of heroin is an increasing concern in our society. For this reason, rapid analytical methods to seize heroin samples in the field are of paramount importance to hinder drug trafficking, and thus prevent the availability of heroin in the drug market. The present work reports on the enriched electrochemical fingerprint of heroin, allowing its selective detection in street samples, based on the use of electrochemical pretreated screen printed electrodes (p-SPE). The voltammetric identification is built on two oxidation peaks of both heroin and its degradation product 6-monoacetylmorphine (6-MAM), generated in alkaline conditions. Interestingly, an anodic pretreatment of the screen printed electrodes (SPE) shifts the peak potential of paracetamol (the most encountered cutting agent in heroin seizures), allowing the detection of 6-MAM peak, overlapping with the paracetamol signal in the case of untreated SPE. Subsequently, the characterization of the p-SPE with scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is provided to demonstrate local changes on the surface of the electrode. From an analytical perspective, p-SPE provide higher sensitivity (0.019 μA μM-1), excellent reproducibility (6-MAM, RSD = 2.85%, and heroin RSD = 0.91%, n = 5) and lower limits of detection (LOD) (5.2 μM) in comparison to untreated SPE. The proposed protocol which integrates a tailor-made script is interrogated against common cutting agents, and finally, validated with the screening of 14 street samples, also analyzed by standard methods. Besides, a comparison with portable spectroscopic techniques on the confiscated samples shows the better performance of the electrochemical strategy. Overall, this sensing approach offers promising results for the rapid on-site profiling of suspicious heroin samples, also in the presence of paracetamol.A tandem ion mobility spectrometer was used to mobility isolate ions at the drift time for trinitrotoluene (TNT) in a first mobility stage, remove an interfering compound by ion decomposition in a middle reactive stage, and mobility characterize the remaining TNT ions in a second mobility stage. This sequential processing of ions provided decisive detection of TNT in the presence of an interfering peak differing from TNT in reduced mobility coefficient (Ko) by only 0.02 cm2/V. Even though ions of TNT (as M - 1)- and the interfering compound were more than 90% convolved, TNT could be selectively detected with more than 95% decomposition of the interferent at 123 Td to an ion now separated by ΔKo of 0.2 cm2/V from TNT. Ions for TNT were not decomposed in these electric fields though transmission efficiency was decreased by 20% through a wire grid assembly (the reactive stage). Diagnosis of transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs) can be difficult. There is consensus on classic symptoms (eg, motor weakness, dysphasia, hemianopia, monocular visual loss) but no consensus on several monosymptomatic events with sudden-onset, non-progressive, focal negative symptoms (eg, isolated diplopia, dysarthria, vertigo, ataxia, sensory loss, and bilateral visual disturbance), with **** variation in investigation and treatment.

Cluster randomised studies of booster vaccines would be ideal to evaluate the efficacy of trained immunity in preventing COVID-19 infections and mortality in vaccinated populations and on community transmission.
Little is known about how flood risk of health-care facilities (HCFs) is evaluated by emergency preparedness professionals and HCFs administrators. This study assessed knowledge of emergency preparedness and HCF management professionals regarding locations of floodplains in relation to HCFs. A Web-based interactive map of floodplains and HCF was developed and users of the map were asked to evaluate it.

An online survey was completed by administrators of HCFs and public health emergency preparedness professionals in Illinois, before and after an interactive online map of floodplains and HCFs was provided.

Forty Illinois HCFs located in floodplains were identified, including 12 long-term care facilities. Preparedness professionals have limited knowledge of whether local HCFs were in floodplains, and few reported availability of geographic information system (GIS) resources at baseline. Respondents intended to use the interactive map for planning and stakeholder communications.

Given that HCFs are located in floodplains, this first assessment of using interactive maps of floodplains and HCFs may promote a shift to reliable data sources of floodplain locations in relation to HCFs. Similar approaches may be useful in other settings.

The present study aimed to assess the current state of breast-feeding promotion in hospitals and the prevalence of breast-feeding during the first year of life in Germany and to compare the results with a study 20 years earlier.

In the studies on 'breast-feeding and infant nutrition in Germany' named 'SuSe', a cross-sectional survey in hospitals was combined with a subsequent prospective survey of breast-feeding and infant nutrition during the first year of life (0·5, 2, 4, 6 and 12 months after birth) in mother-infant pairs who were recruited in the hospitals. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/mhy1485.html Written questionnaires and phone calls were used in SuSe I and web-based questionnaires in SuSe II. Breast-feeding promotion and prevalence were evaluated using recommendations from the WHO and the UNICEF.

Two nationwide surveys SuSe I (1997-1998) and SuSe II (2017-2019).

In SuSe I, 177 hospitals and 1717 mother-infant pairs and in SuSe II 109 hospitals and 962 mother-infant pairs were included.

In SuSe II, hospitals implemented seven of the WHO 'Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding' to a greater extent than the hospitals in SuSe I. More mothers exclusively breastfed for 4 months (57 % v. 33 %) and continued breast-feeding until 6 (78 % v. 48 %) and 12 months (41 % v. 13 %). In both studies, exclusive breast-feeding decreased between 4 and 6 months of age due to the introduction of complementary feeding.

In Germany, breast-feeding habits have come closer to the recommendations over the last 20 years.

To describe strategies used to recruit and retain young adults in nutrition, physical activity and/or obesity intervention studies, and quantify the success and efficiency of these strategies.

A systematic review was conducted. The search included six electronic databases to identify randomised controlled trials (RCT) published up to 6 December 2019 that evaluated nutrition, physical activity and/or obesity interventions in young adults (17-35 years). Recruitment was considered successful if the pre-determined sample size goal was met. Retention was considered acceptable if ≥80 % retained for ≤6-month follow-up or ≥70 % for >6-month follow-up.

From 21 582 manuscripts identified, 107 RCT were included. Universities were the most common recruitment setting used in eighty-four studies (79 %). Less than half (46 %) of the studies provided sufficient information to evaluate whether individual recruitment strategies met sample size goals, with 77 % successfully achieving recruitment targets. Reporting for retention was slightly better with 69 % of studies providing sufficient information to determine whether individual retention strategies achieved adequate retention rates. Of these, 65 % had adequate retention.

This review highlights poor reporting of recruitment and retention information across trials. Findings may not be applicable outside a university setting. Guidance on how to improve reporting practices to optimise recruitment and retention strategies within young adults could assist researchers in improving outcomes.

The aim of this study was to provide insights learned from disaster research response (DR2) efforts following Hurricane Harvey in 2017 to launch DR2 activities following the Intercontinental Terminals Company (ITC) fire in Deer Park, Texas, in 2019.

A multidisciplinary group of academic, community, and government partners launched a myriad of DR2 activities.

The DR2 response to Hurricane Harvey focused on enhancing environmental health literacy around clean-up efforts, measuring environmental contaminants in soil and water in impacted neighborhoods, and launching studies to evaluate the health impact of the disaster. The lessons learned after Harvey enabled rapid DR2 activities following the ITC fire, including air monitoring and administering surveys and in-depth interviews with affected residents.

Embedding DR2 activities at academic institutions can enable rapid deployment of lessons learned from one disaster to enhance the response to subsequent disasters, even when those disasters are different. Our experience demonstrates the importance of academic institutions working with governmental and community partners to support timely disaster response efforts.
This suggests that the population-level associations may be further confounded by differences in structural health systems and policies.
