In this work, we characterized the meiotic TopVIB in maize (Zea mays; ZmMTOPVIB). The ZmmtopVIB mutant plants exhibited normal vegetative growth but male and female sterility. Meiotic double-strand break formation was abolished in mutant meiocytes. Despite normal assembly of axial elements, mutants showed severely affected synapsis and disrupted homologous pairing. Importantly, we showed that bipolar spindle assembly was also affected in ZmmtopVIB, resulting in triad and polyad formation. Overall, our results demonstrate that ZmMTOPVIB plays critical roles in double-strand break formation and homologous recombination. This report tests those claims by combining Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportation data and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) crime data with data on the implementation dates of sanctuary policies between 2010 and 2015. Sanctuary policies reduced deportations of people who were fingerprinted by states or counties by about one-third. Those policies also changed the composition of deportations, reducing deportations of people with no criminal convictions by half-without affecting deportations of people with violent convictions. Sanctuary policies also had no detectable effect on crime rates. Relative sperm numbers in turn predicted the relative fertilization success of rival males. Our application of stable isotopes to label ejaculates resolves a longstanding debate by revealing how rodent mating plugs promote fertilization success under competitive conditions. This approach opens new opportunities to reveal cryptic mechanisms of postcopulatory sexual selection among diverse animal taxa.Historical records reveal the temporal patterns of a sequence of plague epidemics in London, United Kingdom, from the 14th to 17th centuries. Analysis of these records shows that later epidemics spread significantly faster ("accelerated"). Between the Black Death of 1348 and the later epidemics that culminated with the Great Plague of 1665, we estimate that the epidemic growth rate increased fourfold. Currently available data do not provide enough information to infer the mode of plague transmission in any given epidemic; nevertheless, order-of-magnitude estimates of epidemic parameters suggest that the observed slow growth rates in the 14th century are inconsistent with direct (pneumonic) transmission. We discuss the potential roles of demographic and ecological factors, such as climate change or human or rat population density, in driving the observed acceleration.

Common predisposing factors for the disease are viral hepatitis, bacteria, alcohol, and certain hepatotoxic drugs. Inflammatory response and oxidative stress are critical for the pathogenesis of ALI. Pterostilbene (Pte), a natural polyphenol product extracted from blueberries and grapes, has been reported that exerted multiple biological activities, including antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-apoptotic properties. However, there is very little data showing the hepatoprotective effect of Pte on lipopolysaccharide/D-galactosamine (LPS/D-Gal)-induced ALI in ****. In this study, the possible protective effect and potential mechanisms of Pte on ALI are being investigated. It has been found that Pte markedly ameliorates LPS/D-Gal-induced inflammatory infiltration, hemorrhage, and dissociation of the hepatic cord, reducing the myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in liver tissues and serum levels of alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in ALI. Pte also inhibits LPS/D-Gal-induced secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-α), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and interleukin 1β (IL-1β) in liver tissues. Furthermore, the western blot analysis reveals that LPS/D-Gal-activated nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) is significantly inhibited by Pte, and nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) are upregulated by Pte. In conclusion, our results suggest that Pte exerts anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects, which might contribute to ameliorating LPS/D-Gal-induced ALI in ****. Pte has the potential to be a preventive hepatoprotective agent.
The prognosis of HCC depends in large measure on maximum tumor diameter (MTD).
To examine characteristics of tumor aggressiveness over an MTD range of < 2 to 8cm.
A large HCC database was examined retrospectively for trends in serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), and percent of patients with macroscopic portal vein thrombosis (PVT) or tumor multifocality.
There was a significant trend to increased serum AFP levels and percent of patients with PVT, for each, p < 0.001. Within those trends, there were clearly identifiable sub-trends for variations of AFP or percent PVT patients, associated with specific MTD ranges. Calculation of the fold increase for either AFP or percent PVT patients over distinct MTD ranges showed a greater increase of AFP or percent PVT patients compared with the related MTD increase. Interestingly, the increase in percent PVT was mainly independent of AFP.
Patterns of AFP and PVT increase can be discerned with increasing MTD, which are nonlinear. The greater fold increase in tumor aggressiveness factors compared with MTD suggests that HCCs may change with increasing size to a more aggressive phenotype. Cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (CHS) is a common complication after direct bypass surgery in patients with Moyamoya disease (MMD). Since preventive measures may be inadequate, we assessed whether the blood flow difference between the superficial temporal artery (STA) and recipient vessels (△BF) and the direct perfusion range (DPR) are related to CHS.
We measured blood flow in the STA and recipient blood vessels before bypass surgery by transit-time probe to calculate △BF. Perfusion changes around the anastomosis before and after bypass were analyzed with FLOW800 to obtain DPR. Multiple factors, such as △BF, DPR, and postoperative CHS, were analyzed using binary logistic regression.
Forty-one patients with MMD who underwent direct bypass surgery were included in the study. Postoperative CHS symptoms occurred in 13/41 patients. △BF and DPR significantly differed between the CHS and non-CHS groups. The optimal receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve cut-off value was 31.4ml/min for ΔBF, and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.695 (sensitivity 0.846, specificity 0.500). The optimal cut-off value was 3.5cm for DPR, and the AUC was 0.702 (sensitivity 0.615, specificity 0.750).

This article describes how an anesthesiology department at a large urban academic hospital rapidly adapted and deployed to meet the threat head-on. Topics included are preparatory efforts, development of a team-based staffing model, and a new strategy for resource management. While still maintaining a fully functioning operating theater, discrete teams were deployed to both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 intensive care units, rapid response/airway management team, the difficult airway response team, and labor and delivery. Additional topics include the creation of a temporary 'pop-up' anesthesiology-run COVID-19 intensive care unit utilizing anesthesia machines for monitoring and ventilatory support as well as the development of a simulation and innovation team that was instrumental in the rapid prototyping of a controlled split-ventilation system and conversion of readily available BIPAP units into emergency ventilators.

To assess the effect of therapeutic hypothermia on the outcome in term neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).
A randomized controlled trial was conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital in south India. Term infants with moderate to severe HIE were randomized to be treated with normothermia or hypothermia. Mortality, neurological abnormality or normal outcome was recorded at hospital discharge or 28 days of age, whichever was earlier, and at 18 months of age.
The baseline maternal and neonatal characteristics in the two groups were similar. The 78 infants in the hypothermia group had more normal survivors at discharge (38%) than the 84 infants in the normothermia group (30%), ratio 1.29 (95% confidence interval 0.84-1.99), and at 18 months of age (65% vs. 42%), ratio 1.54 (1.13-2.10). When these results were combined with those of a previous randomized trial in the same neonatal unit, there were significantly more normal survivors with hypothermia compared to normothermia at discharge, ratio 1.49 (1.18-1.88) and at 6-18 months of age, ratio 1.37 (1.17-1.60).

To determine the feasibility of having caregivers assist in recognition of clinical deterioration in children hospitalized with febrile illness in a resource-limited setting.
Single-center, prospective, interventional pilot study.

Caregivers were trained to recognize signs of critical illness using the Family-Assisted Severe Febrile Illness Therapy tool, which quantifies patients' work of breathing, mental status, and perfusion, producing color-coded flags to signal illness severity. Caregivers' Family-Assisted Severe Febrile Illness Therapy assessments were compared with healthcare professional assessments and to established Pediatric Early Warning Scores (PEWS). An initial study stage was followed by refinement of training and a larger second sta assessment reached the highest alert level.

To compare the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of IV midazolam after cardiac surgery between children with and without Down syndrome.
Prospective, single-center observational trial.
PICU in a university-affiliated pediatric teaching hospital.
Twenty-one children with Down syndrome and 17 without, 3-36 months, scheduled for cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.
Postoperatively, nurses regularly assessed the children's pain and discomfort with the validated COMFORT-Behavioral scale and Numeric Rating Scale for pain. A loading dose of morphine (100 µg/kg) was administered after coming off bypass; thereafter, morphine infusion was commenced at 40 µg/kg/hr. Midazolam was started if COMFORT-Behavioral scale score of greater than 16 and Numeric Rating Scale score of less than 4 (suggestive of undersedation). Plasma midazolam and metabolite concentrations were measured for population pharmacokinetic- and pharmacodynamic analysis using nonlinear mixed effects modeling (NONMEM) (Version VI; Globo of children with and without Down syndrome required additional sedation after cardiac surgery. To determine the feasibility of having caregivers assist in recognition of clinical deterioration in children hospitalized with febrile illness in a resource-limited setting. Single-center, prospective, interventional pilot study. General pediatric wards at Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya's largest public tertiary-care hospital. Children hospitalized with acute febrile illness, accompanied by caregivers available at the bedside for 24 hours soon after hospital admission. Caregivers were trained to recognize signs of critical illness using the Family-Assisted Severe Febrile Illness Therapy tool, which quantifies patients' work of breathing, mental status, and perfusion, producing color-coded flags to signal illness severity. Caregivers' Family-Assisted Severe Febrile Illness Therapy assessments were compared with healthcare professional assessments and to established Pediatric Early Warning Scores (PEWS). An initial study stage was followed by refinement of training and a larger second sta assessment reached the highest alert level. Caregiver involvement in recognition of critical illness in hospitalized children in low-resource settings may be feasible. To compare the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of IV midazolam after cardiac surgery between children with and without Down syndrome. Prospective, single-center observational trial. PICU in a university-affiliated pediatric teaching hospital. Twenty-one children with Down syndrome and 17 without, 3-36 months, scheduled for cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. Postoperatively, nurses regularly assessed the children's pain and discomfort with the validated COMFORT-Behavioral scale and Numeric Rating Scale for pain. A loading dose of morphine (100 µg/kg) was administered after coming off bypass; thereafter, morphine infusion was commenced at 40 µg/kg/hr. Midazolam was started if COMFORT-Behavioral scale score of greater than 16 and Numeric Rating Scale score of less than 4 (suggestive of undersedation). Plasma midazolam and metabolite concentrations were measured for population pharmacokinetic- and pharmacodynamic analysis using nonlinear mixed effects modeling (NONMEM) (Version VI; Globo of children with and without Down syndrome required additional sedation after cardiac surgery. This pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic analysis does not provide evidence for different dosing of midazolam in children with Down syndrome after cardiac surgery. To evaluate the functional outcomes in critically ill children with severe sepsis using the Pediatric Overall Performance Category scale and Pediatric Cerebral Performance Category scale and to evaluate the risk factors for "worse outcomes." Prospective observational cohort study. Tertiary care PICU from September 2017 to October 2019. One hundred twenty-one children with severe sepsis, 2 months to 17 years old, admitted to PICU. None. Pediatric Overall Performance Category and Pediatric Cerebral Performance Category scores were recorded at admission, PICU discharge, at 3 months and 1 year after discharge. Spasticity affects 60-80% of people with multiple sclerosis (MS), impacting activity, participation and quality of life. We developed the group delivered spasticity self-management program, "MS Spasticity Take Control" (STC), with DVDs for education and lower extremity stretching. STC is based on an international guideline and recommendations from systematic reviews and emphasizes the importance of stretching with specific stretching exercises. Our pilot trial (n = 38) compared STC followed by one month of home stretching practice to unguided use of the National MS Society (NMSS) brochure titled "Stretching for People with MS An Illustrated Manual," also followed by one month of home stretching practice. In this pilot trial, STC showed promising effects on the impact of spasticity (MS Spasticity Scale-88) and other self-report and physical performance measures. We will now carry out a fully-powered trial to evaluate the effect of STC compared to a comparably delivered control program on the impact and seversted that education and stretching help reduce the impact of spasticity. To definitively determine if this education and instructional program with daily stretching practice is effective, a fully powered trial with a comparable control intervention and facilitators who did not create STC is needed. Country-specific percentages of LP and AIDS-events/death rates (assessed with Poisson regression) observed in The Collaboration of Observational HIV Epidemiological Research Europe (COHERE) and EuroSIDA cohorts, were applied to new HIV-diagnoses reported to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. The estimated number of LP in the whole population was then calculated, as was the number of excess AIDS-events/deaths in the first 12 months following HIV-diagnosis assumed to be attributable to LP (difference in estimated events between LP and non-LP).

To evaluate the coronary plaque characteristics of coronary arteries using computed tomography angiography (CTA) in order to assess the risk of coronary artery disease and the relevance of high sensitivity C reactive protein (hs-CRP) in patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM).
The clinical data of 400 DM patients and 400 non-DM patients from January 2017 to December 2019 were collected, including the results of coronaryCTA. The plasma hs-CRP level of the two groups were divided into three groups CRP ≤ 1, 1 < CRP ≤ 2, CRP > 2. The correlation of the degree of stenosis, the number of plaques, the nature of plaques and hs-CRP value between the two groups was evaluated.
Compared with non-DM patients, the incidence of coronary artery plaques and lumen stenosis in DM patients was more higher than that in non-DM patients. DM patients were more likely to have more diseased vessels, especially diffuse vascular disease (12.00% vs 1.75%; P < 0.001). Subjects with high hs-CRP levels were more likely to have any plaque compared with individuals showing normal hs-CRP levels (p<0.01). There was no statistical significance in non calcified plaque with high level of hs-CRP, but the occurrence of plaque types in DM group was statistically significant compared with other hs-CRP levels in non DM group. Subjects with high hs-CRP were observed to be at increased risk for the presence of calcified plaque and severe narrowing in the unadjusted values.
Coronary CTA combined with hs-CRP can accurately detect the characteristics of coronary artery stenosis and plaque in DM patients, which has an important clinical value in the risk assessment of coronary heart disease in DM patients.

The management of pregnant women with sickle cell disease (SCD) poses a major challenge for maternal healthcare services owing to the potential for complications associated with morbidity and mortality. Trustworthy evidence-based clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) have a major impact on the positive outcomes of appropriate healthcare. The objective of this study was to critically appraise the quality of recent CPGs for SCD in pregnant women.
Clinical questions were identified and the relevant CPG and bibliographic databases were searched and screened for eligible CPGs. Each CPG was appraised by four independent appraisers using the AGREE II Instrument. Inter-rater analysis was conducted.
Four eligible CPGs were appraised American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE), and Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG). Among them, the overall assessments of three CPGs (NICE, RCOG, NHLBI) scored greater than 70%; these findings were consistent with the high scores in the six domains of AGREE II, including[1] scope and purpose,[2] stakeholder involvement,[3] rigor of development,[4] clarity of presentation,[5] applicability, and [6] editorial independence domains. Domain [3] scored (90%, 73%, 71%), domain [5] (90%, 46%, 47%), and domain [6] (71%, 77%, 52%) for NICE, RCOG, and NHLBI, respectively. Overall, the clinical recommendations were not significantly different between the included CPGs.
Three evidence-based CPGs presented superior methodological quality. NICE demonstrated the highest quality followed by RCOG and NHLBI and all three CPGs were recommended for use in practice.

Membrane-bound proteins have been proposed to mediate the transport of long-chain fatty acid (LCFA) transport through the plasma membrane (PM). These proposals are based largely on reports that PM transport of LCFA can be blocked by a number of enzymes and purported inhibitors of LCFA transport. Here, using the ratiometric pH indicator (2',7'-bis-(2-carboxyethyl)-5-and-6-)-carboxyfluorescein (BCECF) and acrylodated intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (ADIFAB)-based dual fluorescence assays, we investigated the effects of nine inhibitors of the putative FA transporter protein CD36 on the binding and transmembrane movement of LCFA. We particularly focused on sulfosuccidimidyl oleate (SSO), reported to be a competitive inhibitor of CD36-mediated LCFA transport. Using these assays in adipocytes and inhibitor-treated protein-free lipid vesicles, we demonstrate that rapid LCFA transport across model and biological membranes remains unchanged in the presence of these purported inhibitors. We have previously shown in live cells that CD36 does not accelerate the transport of unesterified LCFA across the PM. Our present experiments indicated disruption of LCFA metabolism inside the cell within minutes upon treatment with many of the "inhibitors", previously assumed to inhibit LCFA transport across the PM. Furthermore, using confocal microscopy and a specific anti-SSO antibody, we found that numerous intracellular and PM-bound proteins are SSO-modified in addition to CD36. Our results support the hypothesis that LCFAs diffuse rapidly across biological membranes and do not require an active protein transporter for their transmembrane movement. This prospective observational study aimed to evaluate a high definition ultrasound imaging technique to systematically identify the individual elements of the BP above the clavicle. METHODS Five healthy young volunteers underwent high definition ultrasound imaging of the BP above the clavicle. The ultrasound scan sequence (transverse oblique scan) commenced at the supraclavicular fossa after which the transducer was slowly swept cranially to the upper part of the interscalene groove and then in the reverse direction to the supraclavicular fossa. The unique sonomorphology of the C7 transverse process was used as the key anatomic landmark to identify the individual elements of the BP in the recorded sonograms. RESULTS The neural elements of the BP that were identified in all volunteers included the ventral rami of C5-T1, the three trunks, divisions of the superior trunk, and formation of the inferior trunk (C8-T1). The C6 ventral ramus exhibited echogenic internal septation with a split (bifid) appearance in four of the five volunteers. In three of the four volunteers with a bifid C6 ventral ramus, the C7 ventral ramus was also bifid. CONCLUSION We have demonstrated that it is feasible to accurately identify majority of the main components of the BP above the clavicle, including the T1 ventral ramus and the formation of the inferior trunk, using high definition ultrasound imaging. In this summary report, we present key findings and recommendations on strategies for myopia control discussed during the meeting jointly organised by the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and the Brien Holden Vision Institute. First, myopia prevalence was reported to be increasing, with up to 80% of junior school students with myopia in East Asia. However, common challenges in implementing myopia control strategies on a national level included lack of school screening programme, and paucity of accurate prevalence data. Second, there continues to be broad public misconception about myopia and myopia control, including lack of parental awareness and resistance to wearing spectacles. Third, best practices for myopia management were shared, and recommendations for policy implementation are presented in this review. Key recommendations from this meeting include increased public education to raise parent and teacher awareness; encouragement of increased outdoor time of 2-3 hours per day for schoolchildren-as a practical public health intervention that has been shown to potentially reduce onset and progression of myopia. Governments and non-governmental organisations are encouraged to collaborate, especially education and health ministries to develop national myopia prevention programme. Key recommendations from this meeting include increased public education to raise parent and teacher awareness; encouragement of increased outdoor time of 2-3 hours per day for schoolchildren-as a practical public health intervention that has been shown to potentially reduce onset and progression of myopia. Governments and non-governmental organisations are encouraged to collaborate, especially education and health ministries to develop national myopia prevention programme. Tools for rationalizing electrochemical reactivity consisting of potential dependant projected density of states, Fukui function and metallicity index are defined. The methodology and tools are applied to examples relevant to the energy domain in order the compare reactivity in the outer Helmholtz plane and at the surface. Then, the combination of HBM and reactivity create a toolbox usable to predict and investigate the different redox, degradation and ageing processes occurring at an electrochemical interface such as the one found in energy materials but also in all electrochemical applications.Hysteresis in the current response to a varying gate voltage is a common spurious effect in carbon-based field effect transistors. Here, we use electric transport measurements to probe the charge transport in networks of armchair graphene nanoribbons with a width of either 5 or 9 carbon atoms, synthesized in a bottom-up approach using chemical vapor deposition. To study the medial rectus (MR) muscle of zebrafish (
) with respect to the pattern of distribution of desmin and its correlation to distinct types of myofibers and motor endplates.
The MRs of zebrafish were examined using confocal microscopy in whole-mount longitudinal specimens and in cross sections processed for immunohistochemistry with antibodies against desmin, myosin heavy chain isoforms, and innervation markers. Desmin patterns were correlated to major myofiber type and type of innervation. A total of 1382 myofibers in nine MR muscles were analyzed.
Four distinct desmin immunolabeling patterns were found in the zebrafish MRs. Approximately a third of all slow myofibers lacked desmin, representing 8.5% of the total myofiber population. The adult zebrafish MR muscle displayed en grappe, en plaque, and multiterminal en plaque neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) with intricate patterns of desmin immunolabeling.
The MRs of zebrafish showed important similarities with the human extraocular muscles with regard to the pattern of desmin distribution and presence of the major types of NMJs and can be regarded as an adequate model to further study the role of desmin and the implications of heterogeneity in cytoskeletal protein composition.
The establishment of a zebrafish model to study the cytoskeleton in muscles that are particularly resistant to muscle disease opens new avenues to understand human myopathies and muscle dystrophies and may provide clues to new therapies.

To control virus spread, many countries temporarily suspended classes. In this context, the availability of e-tools and distance learning platforms in higher education institutions has proven very useful to facilitate the emergency switch to distance learning to ensure continuity of the educational process. We discuss here the experience of the College of Pharmacy at Qatar University in responding to suspension of classes using available educational technologies. Furthermore, we provide some reflection points for optimal implementation of technology-enhanced learning into distance education for future academic years.A series of heterogeneous catalysts consisting of highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles supported on nanosized ZrO2 (20 to 60 nm) was synthesized and investigated for the one-pot transfer hydrogenation between glycerol and cyclohexene to produce lactic acid and cyclohexane, without any additional H2. Different preparation methods were screened, by varying the calcination and reduction procedures with the purpose of optimizing the dispersion of Pt species (i.e., as single-atom sites or extra-fine Pt nanoparticles) on the ZrO2 support. The Pt/ZrO2 catalysts were characterized by means of transmission electron microscopy techniques (HAADF-STEM, TEM), elemental analysis (ICP-OES, EDX mapping), N2-physisorption, H2 temperature-programmed-reduction (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Based on this combination of techniques it was possible to correlate the temperature of the calcination and reduction treatments with the nature of the Pt species. The best catalyst consisted of subnanometer Pt clusters ( less then 1 nm) and atomically dispersed Pt (as Pt2+ and Pt4+) on the ZrO2 support, which were converted into extra-fine Pt nanoparticles (average size = 1.4 nm) upon reduction. These nanoparticles acted as catalytic species for the transfer hydrogenation of glycerol with cyclohexene, which gave an unsurpassed 95% yield of lactic acid salt at 96% glycerol conversion (aqueous glycerol solution, NaOH as promoter, 160 °C, 4.5 h, at 20 bar N2). This is the highest yield and selectivity of lactic acid (salt) reported in the literature so far. Reusability experiments showed a partial and gradual loss of activity of the Pt/ZrO2 catalyst, which was attributed to the experimentally observed aggregation of Pt nanoparticles.In heterogeneous catalysis, bifunctional catalysts often outperform one-component catalysts. The mechanism, combining all three surfaces, is used in mesoscale kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to study the turnover and yield for CO production as a function of particle size. It is shown that the reaction proceeds faster at the interface. However, including copper and the support sites in addition to the interface accelerates the conversion even further, showing that the bifunctionality of the catalyst manifests in a more complex interplay between the phases than just the interface effect, such as the hydrogen spillover. We identify three distinct effects, the electronic, cooperative, and geometric effects, and show that the surrounded smaller Cu features on the set of supporting SrTiO3 show a higher CO formation rate, resulting in a decreasing RWGS model trend with the increasing Cu island size. The findings are in parallel with experiments, showing that they explain the previously observed phenomena and confirming the size sensitivity for the catalytic RWGS reaction.Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal nanosheets are promising catalysts because of the enhanced exposure of the active species compared to their 3D counterparts. Here, we report a simple, scalable, and reproducible strategy to prepare 2D phosphate nanosheets by forming a layered structure in situ from phytic acid (PTA) and transition metal precursors. Controlled combustion of the organic groups of PTA results in interlayer carbon, which keeps the layers apart during the formation of phosphate, and the removal of this carbon results in ultrathin nanosheets with controllable layers. Applying this concept to vanadyl phosphate synthesis, we show that the method yields 2D ultrathin nanosheets of the orthorhombic β-form, exposing abundant V4+/V5+ redox sites and oxygen vacancies. We demonstrate the high catalytic activity of this material in the vapor-phase aerobic oxidation of ethyl lactate to ethyl pyruvate. Importantly, these β-VOPO4 compounds do not get hydrated, thereby reducing the competing hydrolysis reaction by water byproducts.

The findings are in parallel with experiments, showing that they explain the previously observed phenomena and confirming the size sensitivity for the catalytic RWGS reaction.Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal nanosheets are promising catalysts because of the enhanced exposure of the active species compared to their 3D counterparts. Here, we report a simple, scalable, and reproducible strategy to prepare 2D phosphate nanosheets by forming a layered structure in situ from phytic acid (PTA) and transition metal precursors. Controlled combustion of the organic groups of PTA results in interlayer carbon, which keeps the layers apart during the formation of phosphate, and the removal of this carbon results in ultrathin nanosheets with controllable layers. Applying this concept to vanadyl phosphate synthesis, we show that the method yields 2D ultrathin nanosheets of the orthorhombic β-form, exposing abundant V4+/V5+ redox sites and oxygen vacancies. We demonstrate the high catalytic activity of this material in the vapor-phase aerobic oxidation of ethyl lactate to ethyl pyruvate.
