Myxozoans are highly diverse and globally distributed cnidarian endoparasites in freshwater and marine habitats. They have adopted a heteroxenous life cycle, including invertebrate and fish hosts, and have been associated with diseases in aquaculture and wild fish stocks. Despite their importance, genomic resources of myxozoans have proven difficult to obtain due to their miniaturized and derived genome character and close associations with fish tissues. The first 'omic' datasets have now become the main resource for a better understanding of host-parasite interactions, virulence, and diversity, but also the evolutionary history of myxozoans. In this review, we discuss recent genomic advances in the field and outline outstanding questions to be answered with continuous and improved efforts of generating myxozoan genomic data.
Male breast cancer (MBC) comprises <1% of all cancers and continues to rise. Because of rarity, there is paucity in the literature; therefore, management of ****is generalized from female breast cancer (FBC).
Data from 152 VA Medical Centers were used to analyze the database of Veteran patient with breast cancer diagnosed between 1998 and 2016 using biostatistical software (SAS 9.3). Our primary objective is to compare patient's demographics, breast cancer characteristics, and outcomes for male and female Veterans.
In total, 8864 patients' records were reviewed;1528 ****were compared with 7336 FBC with a mean follow up time of 5.5 years (SD 4.17). The mean age at diagnosis was 68.6 years and 57.3 years for ****and FBC, respectively (P < .0001). Higher numbers of ****patients (95%) were >50 years of age compared to FBC patients (72%). A systematic search was undertaken of PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases to identify articles published in the past two decades (2000-2020). Of 8257 records, 4507 remained for title, abstract and full text screening after duplicates were removed. The level of evidence of selected studies was assessed using The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) guideline.
This review included eighty primary research studies examining mortality risk factors following a road traffic crash. The study identified factors in five categories; (i) demographic factors; (ii) behavioural factors; (iii) crash characteristics; (iv) environmental and timing factors; (v) injury severity and pre-injury/condition. The primary studies are summarised in a matrix. Included studies included level II to level IV levels of evidence based on the NHMRC criteria.
This study shows that there are a large number of factors associated with increased risk of mortality following diverse types of traffic crashes. Understanding these wide-ranging factors can strengthen injury and mortality prevention by guiding decision makers about where to focus strategy implementation.

We focus on four drivers of gene expression dysregulation, including mutations, transcription factors, epigenetic regulators, and RNA stability/isoform regulation, in the context of PDAC pathogenesis. Recent studies provide ****-needed insight into the role of gene expression dysregulation in dissecting tumor heterogeneity and stratifying patients for the development of personalized treatment strategies.Recent successes of immune-modulating therapies for cancer have stimulated research on information flow within the immune system and, in turn, clinical applications of concepts from information theory. Through information theory, one can describe and formalize, in a mathematically rigorous fashion, the function of interconnected components of the immune system in health and disease. Specifically, using concepts including entropy, mutual information, and channel capacity, one can quantify the storage, transmission, encoding, and flow of information within and between cellular components of the immune system on multiple temporal and spatial scales. To understand, at the quantitative level, immune signaling function and dysfunction in cancer, we present a methodology-oriented review of information-theoretic treatment of biochemical signal transduction and transmission coupled with mathematical modeling.
This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, activities, and reasons for missed nursing care in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) and the effect of intensive care unit (ICU) overflow patients.
This is a single-center, cross-sectional survey.
Nineteen PACU-registered nurses of a tertiary care hospital participated. Over a 7-month period, participants were asked to complete a validated questionnaire, which included 19 items related to missed nursing care activities and 10 items related to reasons for missed nursing care. χ

The collar is diaphragmatic in Bockiella, but vestibular in the flustrellidrids. Lophophores are similar among the investigated species with a rejection tract in the flustrellidrids. The digestive tract shows differences in the extent and proportions of the caecum, which is large in the flustrellidrids and small in Bockiella; the anus is vestibular in all species. A funicular muscle of variable location is present in each species. Elzerina binderi has additional thin strands emanating from the digestive tract to the body wall. The parietal muscles show a unique situation in E. binderi with five bundles being present, two laterals and one distal. Several features aid in defining characters for the entire superfamily and the families Flustrellidridae and Alcyonidiidae. Besides the shape of the aperture, the frontal duplicature band, the vestibular collar and the large caecum are important. The set of characters also confirms recent notions that Bockiella belongs to the Alcyonidiidae.Groundwater is the main source of water for beverages, and its quality varies depending on extraction location; this is particularly the case in regions with complex geology, topography, and multiple forms of land use. Thus, it is important to determine a suitable groundwater extraction location based on intended water use and the related water quality standards. In this study, deep neural network (DNN) models and GIS data relating to groundwater quality were applied to estimate potential maps of Gangwon Province in South Korea, where groundwater is frequently extracted for drinking purposes. These maps specify areas where the groundwater quality is conducive for being used as mineral water and water for brewing coffee (hereafter referred as "coffee water"). Sensitivity analysis identified how inputs were sensitive to model estimation and showed that land-use variables were the most sensitive. The importance of each variable quantified how good or bad its region is for the desired groundwater. The overall features of importance were similar between mineral water and coffee water. However, with differences in hydrogeological units, carbonate rock was a variable of high positive importance for mineral water; metamorphic rock was its equivalent for coffee water. Our results offer a potential map of desired groundwater quality in the absence of a detailed understanding of the underlying hydrochemical processes governing groundwater quality. Additionally, the development of such a potential mapping model can help to determine the appropriate development area of groundwater for their respective purposes.
To ascertain whether adverse effects experienced by people taking carbamazepine or oxcarbazepine could be attributed to carbamazepine- or oxcarbazepine-induced hyponatremia (COIH).
We performed an observational study, collecting data between 2017 and 2019 on serum sodium levels and adverse effects retrospectively in people with epilepsy while receiving treatment with either carbamazepine (CBZ) or oxcarbazepine (OXC). We defined hyponatremia as sodium level ≤134mEq/L and severe hyponatremia as sodium level ≤128mEq/L. Adverse effects experienced were compared between groups of individuals with and without hyponatremia.
A total of 1370 people using CBZ or OXC were identified, of whom 410 had at least one episode of hyponatremia. We checked for symptoms related to the use of CBZ and OXC in 710 people (410 with and 300 without hyponatremia) and found relevant information in 688. Adverse effects occurred in 65% of people with hyponatremia compared to 21% with normal sodium levels (odds ratio [OR] 7.5, P ≤ .001) and in 83% of people with severe hyponatremia compared to 55% in those with mild hyponatremia (P ≤ .001). Among mammals, one example is the vocalization of Alston's singing mouse (Scotinomys teguina), which consists of a series of rapidly repeated, frequency-modulated notes. The rate and duration of songs is sexually dimorphic and androgen responsive. To understand the neuronal mechanisms underlying this sexual dimorphism, we map the sites of androgen sensitivity throughout the brain, focusing analysis along a pathway that spans from limbic structures to vocal motor regions. We find widespread expression of AR immunoreactivity (AR-ir) throughout limbic structures important for social behavior and vocalization, including the lateral septum, extended amygdala, preoptic area and hypothalamus. We also find extensive AR staining along previously documented vocal motor pathways, including the periaqueductal gray, parabrachial nucleus, and nucleus ambiguus, the last of which innervates intrinsic laryngeal muscles. Lastly, AR-ir is also evident in sensory areas such as the medial geniculate, inferior, and superior colliculi. A quantitative analysis revealed that males exhibited more AR-ir than females, a pattern that was most pronounced in the hypothalamus. Despite the elaboration of vocalization in singing ****, comparison with prior literature suggests that the broad pattern of AR-ir may be conserved across a wide range of rodents. Together these data identify brain nuclei well positioned to shape the sexually dimorphic vocalization of S. teguina and suggest that such androgen modulation of vocalization is evolutionary conserved among rodents.

When analyzing the 128 double positive samples, it was found that the geometric mean of ratios (GMR) for paired observations was 0.98, which indicates a very good alignment between the two methods. The Deming regression fitted between the methods also showed a good correlation with an estimated slope being 1.1085. In the second study, HBsAg-specific CD4+ T-cell responses were analyzed in 371 samples. Of these, 100 were double positive, 195 were double negative and 76 sample results were discordant, leading to an overall agreement of 79.51%. Basophils play a major physio-pathological role in hypersensitivity related diseases. Basophils express high affinity Immunoglobulin (Ig) E receptors (FcεRI), IgG and complement regulatory. Basophils also have immunoregulatory activity through interaction with T cells. The aim of this study was to look for the expression of markers reflecting the activation status of peripheral Basophil in healthy donors.
the study was performed on 29 healthy donors, 62% females with a mean age of 50.1+17.0years. Basophils were identified on their expression of CD123 without HLA-DR and/or CD193 in two 8 colors panels including CD46, CD55, CD59, CD203c, CD32 (FcγRII), CD64 (FcγRIII), CD163, CD137L (4-1BBL), CD252 (OX40L), CD244 (2B4) and CD3 on whole blood. Basophil activation with anti IgE was performed on 14 donors.
Our results confirmed the Basophil expression of CD123, CD193 and CD203 (the latter is strongly increased under stimulation). Complement regulatory proteins (CD46, CD55, CD59) were expressed at the same levels as on other leukocytes; CD46, CD59 expression being slightly increased under stimulation. CD32 and CD163 scavenger were slightly higher than on lympho and not influenced by activation. CD252 or CD137L were expressed at low levels and significantly induced by stimulation. Most of all, CD244 was highly expressed on Basophils as compared to any other leukocytes in fresh peripheral blood.
Our study shows that human resting Basophils express IgE and IgG Fc receptors and check point receptor CD244 that could potentially play a role in their previously reported immunoregulatory activity in sensitization and even in tumor immune escape.

This article reports on a case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma initially diagnosed and treated as periodontal disease and then endodontic disease in the maxillary anterior and premolar area of a 40-year old female. A cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) image of the lesion was taken. The lesion was segmented using Mimics software (Materialise NV, Lueven, Belgium). Three-dimensional models of the tumor were printed. During the surgical phase teeth #4, 6, and 7 were extracted and biopsy samples were obtained. Histopathologic examination showed invasive sheets of large, atypical, basophilic cells strongly and diffusely positive for CD20. Three-dimensional analysis, segmentation, and printing of radiolucent lesions of the jaws assists with differential diagnosis and efficient treatment. Oral health professionals can play a crucial role in the early detection and diagnosis of oral NHL, thereby preventing extensive loss of function and esthetics, and even saving lives.

A cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) image of the lesion was taken. The lesion was segmented using Mimics software (Materialise NV, Lueven, Belgium). Three-dimensional models of the tumor were printed. During the surgical phase teeth #4, 6, and 7 were extracted and biopsy samples were obtained. Histopathologic examination showed invasive sheets of large, atypical, basophilic cells strongly and diffusely positive for CD20. Since the beginning of overseas contingency operations, the percent of service members who are considered overweight or obese has tripled to 15% for men and 20% for women. This has implications for national security if the country is unable to staff its military with fit-to-fight individuals. The purpose of this systematic review is to move policy efforts forward by illuminating the efficacy of several lifestyle interventions for active duty service members since 2001. It aims to both identify common aspects of successful interventions and also identify interventions without success so DoD leaders may replace those initiatives.
The electronic database PubMed was searched from September 11, 2001 to May 15, 2020. Studies were included if the target population was United States active duty service members from any branch, the study included an intervention, and the measured outcome was weight loss. Seven studies met final inclusion criteria.
Interventions with corresponding weight loss data are summarized on bases and possible prevention efforts.

There is concern about the risk of yellow fever (YF) establishment in Asia, owing to rising numbers of urban outbreaks in endemic countries and globalisation. Following an outbreak in Angola in 2016, YF cases were introduced into China. Prior to this, YF had never been recorded in Asia, despite climatic suitability and the presence of mosquitoes. An outbreak in Asia could result in widespread fatalities and huge economic impact. Therefore, quantifying the potential risk of YF outbreaks in Asia is a public health priority.
Using international flight data and YF incidence estimates from 2016, we quantified the risk of YF introduction via air travel into Asia. In locations with evidence of a competent mosquito population, the potential for autochthonous YF transmission was estimated using a temperature-dependent model of the reproduction number and a branching process model assuming a negative binomial distribution.
In total, 25 cities across Asia were estimated to be at risk of receiving at least one YF vutochthonous transmission during 2016. This supports the historic absence of YF in Asia and suggests it could be due to a limited number of introductions in previous years. Future increases in travel volumes or YF incidence can increase the number of introductions and the risk of autochthonous transmission. Given the high proportion of asymptomatic or mild infections and the challenges of YF surveillance, our model can be used to estimate the introduction and outbreak risk and can provide useful information to surveillance systems.
Japan's healthcare expenditures, especially on oncology, are rapidly growing; however, there are scant data on actual costs and cost-effectiveness in the real world. The aim was to assess the medical costs and outcomes of patients with advanced lung cancer.
We retrospectively investigated all patients who were diagnosed with advanced lung cancer at the Japanese Red Cross Medical Center between 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2018. Patients were classified into three cohorts according to the year of diagnosis-Cohort 1 2008-2010, Cohort 2 2011-2014 and Cohort 3 2015-2018-and assessed for medical costs and outcome. Medical costs were divided into outpatient and inpatient costs and were calculated on a monthly basis.

Since the beginning of overseas contingency operations, the percent of service members who are considered overweight or obese has tripled to 15% for men and 20% for women. This has implications for national security if the country is unable to staff its military with fit-to-fight individuals. The purpose of this systematic review is to move policy efforts forward by illuminating the efficacy of several lifestyle interventions for active duty service members since 2001. It aims to both identify common aspects of successful interventions and also identify interventions without success so DoD leaders may replace those initiatives. The electronic database PubMed was searched from September 11, 2001 to May 15, 2020. Studies were included if the target population was United States active duty service members from any branch, the study included an intervention, and the measured outcome was weight loss. Seven studies met final inclusion criteria. Interventions with corresponding weight loss data are summarized on bases and possible prevention efforts. An outbreak in Asia could result in widespread fatalities and huge economic impact. Therefore, quantifying the potential risk of YF outbreaks in Asia is a public health priority. Using international flight data and YF incidence estimates from 2016, we quantified the risk of YF introduction via air travel into Asia. In locations with evidence of a competent mosquito population, the potential for autochthonous YF transmission was estimated using a temperature-dependent model of the reproduction number and a branching process model assuming a negative binomial distribution. In total, 25 cities across Asia were estimated to be at risk of receiving at least one YF vutochthonous transmission during 2016. This supports the historic absence of YF in Asia and suggests it could be due to a limited number of introductions in previous years. Future increases in travel volumes or YF incidence can increase the number of introductions and the risk of autochthonous transmission. Given the high proportion of asymptomatic or mild infections and the challenges of YF surveillance, our model can be used to estimate the introduction and outbreak risk and can provide useful information to surveillance systems. 1 TECHNICAL EFFICACY Stage 1.Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) is one of the most common diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, characterized by a complicated pathogenesis, multiple organ failure, and high mortality. The primary aim of the present study was to observe the effect of intestinal lymphatic ligation on intestinal injury and modification in rats with SAP. Male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into (a) Saline group (SO); (b) SAP group; and (c) SAP + ligation group. We evaluated the effect of mesenteric lymphatic duct ligation on the pancreas and intestine tissue by HE. The histopathology of the pancreas in SAP + ligation rats was alleviated slightly compared with SAP rats, but aggravated in the intestine of SAP + ligation rats. Treatment of mesenteric lymphatic duct ligation resulted in an increase in the levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and myeloperoxidase compared with the small intestinal tissues of SAP rats. In addition, the expression of nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptors 3, apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain (CARD) (ASC), and caspase-1 in the intestine were higher in the SAP + ligation group. The ratio of Th1/Th2 and regulatory T cells (Tregs) in the mesenteric lymph nodes of the SAP group was lower than those in the SAP + ligation group. The present results indicated that ligation of the mesenteric lymph duct can effectively prevent intestinal inflammatory mediators entering the body through the mesenteric lymph duct, but these mediators assembled in the intestine where they induced an excessive immune response and intestinal injury during SAP.Distal 1q21.1 microdeletions have shown highly variable clinical expressivity and incomplete penetrance, with affected individuals manifesting a broad spectrum of nonspecific features. The goals of this study were to better describe the phenotypic spectrum of patients with distal 1q21.1 microdeletions and to compare the clinical features among affected individuals. We performed a retrospective chart review of 47 individuals with distal 1q21.1 microdeletions tested at a large clinical genetic testing laboratory, with most patients being clinically evaluated in the same children's hospital. Health information such as growth charts, results of imaging studies, developmental history, and progress notes were collected. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher's exact test to compare clinical features among study subjects. Common features in our cohort include microcephaly (51.2%), seizures (29.8%), developmental delay (74.5%), failure to thrive (FTT) (68.1%), dysmorphic features (63.8%), and a variety of congenital anomalies such as cardiac abnormalities (23.4%) and genitourinary abnormalities (19.1%). Compared to prior literature, we found that seizures, brain anomalies, and FTT were more prevalent among our study cohort. Females were more likely than males to have microcephaly (p = 0.0199) and cardiac abnormalities (p = 0.0018). To report visual and anatomical outcomes and determine predictors of good visual acuity (VA) recovery after macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD).
Prospective multicentre study including 115 eyes from 115 patients successfully operated on for RD, with assessment of VA and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) macular images at 1, 3, 6 and 12months after surgery.
Over the follow-up period, VA significantly improved from median [IQR] 62 [46; 72] ETDRS letters at 1month to 75 [67; 80] ETDRS letters at 12months (p<0.001) with a concomitant decreased number of eyes with any SD-OCT lesions (p<0.001). The presence of subretinal fluid (SRF) significantly decreased (p<0.001), as did the number of photoreceptor (PR) layer lesions (p=0.04). At 12months, lesions in the PR layer and poor VA recovery were significantly associated with a longer time to surgery (p=0.007 and p<0.001, respectively). The rate of patients without PR lesions increased from 40.9% at 1month to 60.0% at 6months and 73.9% at 12months (p<0.001). The incidence of epiretinal membrane (ERM) significantly increased (p<0.001), while cystoid macular oedema (CME) remained stable over time. Visual acuity (VA) at 3months postoperatively was a good reflection of final VA recovery (p<0.001).

Over the last few years, there have been plenty of contrasting results from studies involving P. aeruginosa and S. aureus co-cultures. The general concept that P. aeruginosa outcompetes S. aureus has been challenged and there is more evidence now that they can co-exist. Nevertheless, it still remains difficult to mimic polymicrobial infections in vitro and in vivo. In this review, we discuss recent advances in regard to Pa-Sa molecular interactions, their physical responses, and in vitro and in vivo models. We believe it is important to optimize growth conditions in the laboratory, determine appropriate bacterial starting ratios, and consider environmental factors to study the co-existence of these two pathogens. Ideally, optimized growth media should reflect host-mimicking conditions with or without host cells that allow both bacteria to co-exist.

We evaluated the effect of mesenteric lymphatic duct ligation on the pancreas and intestine tissue by HE. The histopathology of the pancreas in SAP + ligation rats was alleviated slightly compared with SAP rats, but aggravated in the intestine of SAP + ligation rats. Treatment of mesenteric lymphatic duct ligation resulted in an increase in the levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and myeloperoxidase compared with the small intestinal tissues of SAP rats. In addition, the expression of nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptors 3, apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain (CARD) (ASC), and caspase-1 in the intestine were higher in the SAP + ligation group. We performed a retrospective chart review of 47 individuals with distal 1q21.1 microdeletions tested at a large clinical genetic testing laboratory, with most patients being clinically evaluated in the same children's hospital. Over the follow-up period, VA significantly improved from median [IQR] 62 [46; 72] ETDRS letters at 1month to 75 [67; 80] ETDRS letters at 12months (p<0.001) with a concomitant decreased number of eyes with any SD-OCT lesions (p<0.001). The presence of subretinal fluid (SRF) significantly decreased (p<0.001), as did the number of photoreceptor (PR) layer lesions (p=0.04). The diagnosis of vulval lichen sclerosus (VLS) is often delayed, and little is known about quality of life (QoL) of women with it prior to receiving diagnosis and treatment. This study aimed to investigate the impact on QoL on patients with previously untreated VLS using the Vulval Quality of Life Index (VQLI).
A prospective cross-sectional survey of patients attending a dermato-gynaecology practice in Sydney, Australia from March 2018 to November 2019. Patients with a new biopsy-proven diagnosis of VLS not previously commenced on topical corticosteroid treatment were invited to complete the VQLI.
A total of 68 participants with median age of 58 (interquartile range, IQR 48-67) years. Median symptom duration was 24 (IQR 11-60) months. Scarring was present in 53% of participants. The median total score was 13.5 (IQR 7.5-22.0), global score 1.0 (IQR 1.0-2.0). Twelve per cent had nil to minimal effect on QoL, 38% had a mild effect on QoL, 28% had a moderate effect on QoL, 22% had a severe effect on QoL, and none had a very severe effect on QoL. The highest-scoring domains were symptoms, followed by sexuality, anxiety and activities of daily living.

Most experienced moderate-to-severe impairment as a result of the disease and approximately half had already developed scarring at the time of diagnosis. Our responses are based on the principles of social distancing, hand hygiene, respiratory etiquettes, surface disinfection protocol, and rational use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). We describe our response in terms of administrative controls, clinical protocols, staff protection, environmental controls, and social distancing measures. We also discuss our communication strategies and monitoring systems, to ensure compliance to protocols.
Administrative control is mainly related to formation of task force and its functions. Clinical protocols are related to patient triaging methods and clinical examination guidelines in Outpatient, Inpatient and Operating Room. Staff protection is focused on training staff on the protocols to be followed in hospital as well as at home, and use of PPE. Environmental protocol is focused on cleaning and disinfectant methods to be used in the hospital. In addition, there are systems for communication as well as monitoring compliance to protocols.
We hope that these protocols and our experience would help the ophthalmic community globally and serve as a guide to protect ophthalmologists and ophthalmic care personnel, and their patients across the world.

US federal, state, and local governments implemented numerous COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders (lockdowns) starting in March 2020 to ensure social distancing regulations and help stop the spread of COVID-19. It is important to know how these lockdowns affected businesses, such as restaurants, in regions that vary in terms of poverty status and geography. In this paper, we analyze the differential changes in rural and urban restaurant visits by the restaurants' NAICS codes following the COVID-19 lockdowns. Our analysis contributes to the public policy literature and helps operational planning for food distribution during a pandemic.
Since urban and rural consumer behavior and food resources are significantly different, it is crucial to conduct a comparative analysis. Our study applies a difference-in-differences model to capture the differential effects lockdowns have on urban and rural restaurants.

Our responses are based on the principles of social distancing, hand hygiene, respiratory etiquettes, surface disinfection protocol, and rational use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). We describe our response in terms of administrative controls, clinical protocols, staff protection, environmental controls, and social distancing measures. We also discuss our communication strategies and monitoring systems, to ensure compliance to protocols. Administrative control is mainly related to formation of task force and its functions. Clinical protocols are related to patient triaging methods and clinical examination guidelines in Outpatient, Inpatient and Operating Room. Staff protection is focused on training staff on the protocols to be followed in hospital as well as at home, and use of PPE. Environmental protocol is focused on cleaning and disinfectant methods to be used in the hospital. In addition, there are systems for communication as well as monitoring compliance to protocols. It is important to know how these lockdowns affected businesses, such as restaurants, in regions that vary in terms of poverty status and geography. In this paper, we analyze the differential changes in rural and urban restaurant visits by the restaurants' NAICS codes following the COVID-19 lockdowns. Our analysis contributes to the public policy literature and helps operational planning for food distribution during a pandemic. Since urban and rural consumer behavior and food resources are significantly different, it is crucial to conduct a comparative analysis. Our study applies a difference-in-differences model to capture the differential effects lockdowns have on urban and rural restaurants. The approaches were a) systematic literature review, b) a series of expert workshops, and c) a practitioner survey of veterinarians and para-veterinary professionals. The top constraints that emerged from all three approaches include endo/ ectoparasites, foot and mouth disease, brucellosis, peste des petits ruminants, Newcastle disease, and avian influenza. Expert workshops additionally identified contagious caprine pleuropneumonia, contagious bovine pleuropneumonia, mastitis, and reproductive disorders as constraints not emphasized in the literature review. Practitioner survey results additionally identified nutrition as a constraint for smallholder dairy and pastoralist small ruminant production. Experts attending the workshops agreed most constraints can be managed using existing veterinary technologies and best husbandry practices, which supports a shift away from focusing on individual diseases and new technologies towards addressing systemic challenges that limit access to veterinary services and inputs. Few research studies focused on incidence/ prevalence of disease and impact, suggesting better incorporation of socio-economic impact measures in future research would better represent the interests of livestock keepers.Vaccination has become a site of professional and social concern, particularly as parents choose not to vaccinate their children. Previous research in medical sociology has considered the role of parents, knowledge, and health beliefs within vaccination debates. Yet, what has been overlooked is the expert construction of ignorance that emerges in conflicts over vaccination. This construction crystallizes in news media coverage of public health crises created by un- or under-vaccinated populations. Drawing on the sociology of science and the social problems tradition, this article performs a comparative case analysis to reveal that experts' status as privileged knowers affords them the capacity to frame ignorance itself. Using a content analysis of two measles outbreaks-one in California at Disneyland and the second among the Amish in Ohio-I show how experts do not simply traffic in objective, knowledge-based claims. Rather, they incorporate moral valences into these claims, which become apparent through their assessments of ignorance. Experts in the news shape the epistemic contours of the debate, calling out Californians as willfully ignorant, while excusing the Amish as unintentionally ignorant. This framing of ignorance is underpinned by the moral culpability of each population and its tractability to policy intervention. More broadly, this study reveals how expertise can be linked with and even supported by assessments of the causes and motivations of ignorance.

Deception Island is an active volcano in the Antarctica being volcanism a source of mercury. To improve the understanding of the Hg cycle in this remote ecosystem, pyroclastic gravel and water samples were collected and total (THg) and monomethylmercury (MMHg) concentrations were measured as well as the potential for Hg methylation. Gravel samples collected close to active fumaroles showed the highest THg levels (72 ng/g) while in water samples the highest concentrations of THg (1.2 ng/L) and MMHg (0.45 ng/L) where found. Methylation activity was barely observable in gravel samples. Biotic methylation rates in water were up to 13 times higher compared to those recorded previously in other polar waters. Abiotic methylation processes also play an important role, with up to 0.54 ± 0.43% of added Hg converted instantaneously to MMHg. These results suggest that Deception Island presents favourable conditions for MMHg explaining the elevated concentrations of both THg and MMHg in this ecosystem.The operation of coastal nuclear power plants and thermal power plants (CNATPPs) can cause regional sea surface temperature (SST) increases. To assess their effects on coastal ecosystems, the scope and extent of their impacts must be understood. We aimed to quantitatively assess the SST increases caused by thermal discharge under climate warming by comparing SSTs between control and test groups and among different offshore buffer zones based on daily MODIS SST data from 2002 to 2017. The results showed that (1) a good correlation occurred between the CNATPP installed capacity and SST increase in the 0-2 km offshore waters; (2) the SST increase caused by thermal discharge was the largest in summer and the smallest in winter; and (3) the effect of thermal discharge occurred within 2 km offshore when the installed capacity exceeded 2000 MW and extended to 5 km when it reaches more than 4000 MW.Habitat restoration is an international priority. With this demand there is a need for ecological knowledge to underpin restoration projects to ensure their success and cost-effective delivery. This study is the first temperate marine restoration project to examine the role seasonality and location may have on restoration projects. The study found that the settlement of Serpula vermicularis, a rare biogenic reef forming species of conservation importance, was up to three times higher on materials deployed during July than other months. The results also found similar differences in settlement between restoration sites. These results suggest that the timing and location of a restoration effort could affect its overall success in the medium to long term. For the restoration of marine biogenic species of conservation importance, targeted spatial and temporal pre-restoration experiments can greatly increase a project's chance of success as well as making large-scale restoration programs more cost efficient.Sea turtles are useful sentinels to monitor the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the marine coastal ecosystems. To explore the stress responses and mechanisms of salinity tolerance in razor clams, we collected transcriptomic and metabolomic data from a control group (salinity 20‰, S20) and a salinity-stress group (salinity 35‰, S35). The transcriptome data showed that genes related to the immune system, cytoskeleton remodeling, and signal transduction pathways dominated in the S35 group to counteract hypersalinity stress in the gill. The metabolomic analysis showed that 142 metabolites were significantly different between the S35 and S20 groups and that amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism were affected by hypersalinity stress. Levels of amino acids and energy substances, such as l-proline, isoleucine, and fructose, were higher in the gill of the S35 group. The combination of transcriptomic and metabolomic data indicated that metabolism of amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids was enhanced in the gill during adaptation to high salinity. These results clarified the complex physiological processes involved in the response to hyperosmotic stress and maintenance of metabolism in the gill of razor clams. These findings provide a reference for further study of the biological responses of euryhaline shellfish to hyperosmotic stress and a molecular basis for the search for populations with high salinity tolerance.Semaphorins and Plexins constitute one of the largest family of guidance molecules and receptors involved in setting critical biological steps for central nervous system development. In this review, we aim to gather discoveries carried in the field of neurodevelopment over the last decade, during which Semaphorin/Plexin complexes have emerged as key regulators of neurogenesis, neural cell migration and adult gliogenesis. As well, we report mechanisms that brought a better understanding of axonal midline crossing.
