Method Using 5 years (2012-2016) of a state-wide database of routinely collected individual level mental health service data, we describe the socio-demographic and clinical profile of PARC service consumers compared to consumers of psychiatric inpatient units including for primary diagnosis and illness severity. Using admissions as the unit of analysis, we identify the characteristics that distinguish PARC service admissions from psychiatric inpatient ices should be cognizant of these consumer differences, particularly when assessing the long-term effectiveness of this service option.Climate change ranks among the most important issues globally, affecting geographic distributions of vectors and pathogens, and inducing losses in livestock production among many other damaging effects. We characterized the potential geographic distribution of the ticks Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, an important vector of babesiosis and anaplasmosis globally. We evaluated potential geographic shifts in suitability patterns for this species in two periods (2050 and 2070) and under two emissions scenarios (RCPs 4.5 and 8.5). Our results anticipate increases in suitability worldwide, particularly in the highest production areas for cattle. The Indo-Malayan region resulted in the highest cattle exposure under both climate change projections (2050), with increases in suitability of > 30%. Methods hDPSCs were isolated from human impacted third molars being extracted for orthodontic reasons. Eight weeks after the induction of diabetes in nude ****, hDPSCs (1 × 105/limb) were unilaterally transplanted into the hindlimb skeletal muscle, and vehicle (saline) was injected into the opposite side as a control. The effects of hDPSCs were analyzed at 4 weeks after transplantation. Results hDPSC transplantation significantly ameliorated reduced sensory perception thresholds, delayed nerve conduction velocity, and decreased the blood flow to the sciatic nerve in diabetic **** 4 weeks post-transplantation. Cultured hDPSCs secreted the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) proteins. A subset of the transplanted hDPSCs was localized around the muscle bundles and expressed the human VEGF and NGF genes at the transplanted site. The capillary/muscle bundle ratio was significantly increased on the hDPSC-transplanted side of the gastrocnemius muscles in diabetic ****. Neutralizing antibodies against VEGF and NGF negated the effects of hDPSC transplantation on the nerve conduction velocity in diabetic ****, suggesting that VEGF and NGF may play roles in the effects of hDPSC transplantation on diabetic polyneuropathy. Most states in India have completed a year of implementation of PMJAY but no evaluations are available of this important scheme. Methods The study was designed to find out the effect of enrolment under PMJAY in improving utilisation of hospital services and financial protection in Chhattisgarh which has been a leading state in implementing PFHI in terms of enrolment and claims. The study analyses three repeated cross-sections. Two of the cross-sections are from National Sample Survey (NSS) health rounds - year 2004 when there was no PFHI and 2014 when the older PFHI scheme was in operation.

Real-time PCR and Western Blot analysis were used to study the differentiated expression of miR-145, MALAT1 (metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1) and COL5A1 (collagen alpha-1(V) chain) in tumour/serum samples genotyped as rs619586 AA, AG and GG. Computational analysis and luciferase reporter assay were also conducted to identify the regulatory relationship between miR-145 and MALAT1/COL5A1. Meanwhile, expression of miR-145 and COL5A1 in different cell treatment groups was measured to validate the results obtained from earlier experiments. As shown by the results and in tumour/serum samples genotyped as AA, AG and GG, the expression of both MALAT1 and COL5A1 was down-regulated in a stepwise fashion, while the expression of miR-145 was increased, suggesting a potential negative relationship between MALAT1/COL5A1 and miR-145. Meanwhile, miR-145 was shown to bind to MALAT1, while COL5A1 was identified as a virtual target gene of miR-145. As a consequence, a MALAT1/miR-145/COL5A1 molecular pathway was established based on the above results. In particular, with the presence of rs619586 A>G polymorphism, the expression of MALAT1 and COL5A1 was both reduced, leading to reduced invasiveness of meningioma.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) outcomes of unobstructed patients with detrusor underactivity (DUA), comparing the surgical results between obstructed and unobstructed males with concomitant DUA, at midterm follow-up.

As lipid A's structure differs among bacterial species and varies between strains of the same species, knowing its modifications is essential to understand its implications in the infectious process. To analyze these lipids, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) is a well-suited method that is fast and efficient. However, there are limitations with the matrix and additives used, such as the suppression of signal or prompt fragmentations that could give a false overview of lipid A composition in biological samples. For a comprehensive analysis of the entire lipid A species present in a sample, we tested 16 matrices and 11 additives on two commercial lipids A. The first commercial one contains single phosphorylation group, and the second contains two phosphorylation and two ketodeoxyoctonic acid (KDO) groups. The lipid A containing KDO groups was essentially detected by the 3-hydroxypicolinic acid (3-HPA) matrix, whereas the monophosphorylated lipid A could be detected by 13 matrices out of the 16. We also demonstrated that the signal of diphosphorylated lipid A can be enhanced with the use of additives in the matrix. Our study indicated that the best conditions to obtain a clear signal of both lipids A without prompt fragmentation was the use of 3-HPA with 10mM trifluoroacetic acid (TFA).Ubiquilin (UBQLN) proteins are involved in diverse cellular processes like endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation, autophagy, apoptosis, and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. An increasing number of examples demonstrate that the use of two mutually compatible chiral catalysts in one-pot conditions can help realize the long-cherished goal of simultaneous control of absolute and relative configurations in asymmetric catalysis. Engaging two transition metal catalysts for this goal presents a considerable degree of mechanistic challenge to control the mode of substrate activation as well as origin of enantio- and diastereoselectivities, both of which are central to the burgeoning domain of stereodivergent catalysis. We have employed density functional theory (B3LYP-D3) computations to investigate an important stereodivergent reaction between azaaryl acetamide and cinnamyl methyl carbonate. These compounds participate in the stereocontrolling C-C bond formation in the form of activated substrates, respectively, when bound to chiral Cu-Walphos and Ir-phosphoramidite catalysts. Herein, we provide the molecular origin of how all four stereoisomers of the product bearing two contiguous stereogenic centers could be accessed by changing the combinations of chiral catalysts (C1(R,Rp) or C2(S,Sp) of Cu-Walphos in conjunction with P1(R,R,R) or P2(S,S,S) of Ir-phosphoramidite catalysts). The origin of stereodivergence is identified to depend on the differences in the number and nature of noncovalent interactions (NCIs) in the stereocontrolling transition states. In particular, NCIs between the chiral catalysts (C-H···π in C1-P1 catalyst dyad and C-H···π, C-H···F, and π···π in C2-P1) in stereocontrolling transition states are found to be the differentiating factors rendering one of the four stereochemically distinct transition states to be the lowest energy one for a given catalyst combination. Second, we found that antagonism of GPR4 with NE 52-QQ57 significantly inhibited the AGE-induced increased expression of several key inflammatory cytokines and signaling molecules, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), nitric oxide (NO), cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). By introducing the polymer melt wetting technique, polymer nanotubes are fabricated on the surface of the TENG, which provides self-cleaning and hydrophobic features beneficial for water drop energy harvesting using the device. In such mechanical energy harvesting, the maximum output power of 0.025 mW and the open-circuit voltage of 41 V can be achieved. By designing the dimensions of the device, the dual-mode TENG is utilized as a self-powered sensor to detect human body motions such as phalanges' movement of fingers. The fabricated dual-mode TENG promotes the development of energy-harvesting and self-powered human motion sensors for artificial intelligent prosthetics, human kinematics, and human body recovery treatment.
An increasing number of examples demonstrate that the use of two mutually compatible chiral catalysts in one-pot conditions can help realize the long-cherished goal of simultaneous control of absolute and relative configurations in asymmetric catalysis. Engaging two transition metal catalysts for this goal presents a considerable degree of mechanistic challenge to control the mode of substrate activation as well as origin of enantio- and diastereoselectivities, both of which are central to the burgeoning domain of stereodivergent catalysis. We have employed density functional theory (B3LYP-D3) computations to investigate an important stereodivergent reaction between azaaryl acetamide and cinnamyl methyl carbonate. These compounds participate in the stereocontrolling C-C bond formation in the form of activated substrates, respectively, when bound to chiral Cu-Walphos and Ir-phosphoramidite catalysts. Herein, we provide the molecular origin of how all four stereoisomers of the product bearing two contiguous stereogenic centers could be accessed by changing the combinations of chiral catalysts (C1(R,Rp) or C2(S,Sp) of Cu-Walphos in conjunction with P1(R,R,R) or P2(S,S,S) of Ir-phosphoramidite catalysts). The origin of stereodivergence is identified to depend on the differences in the number and nature of noncovalent interactions (NCIs) in the stereocontrolling transition states. In particular, NCIs between the chiral catalysts (C-H···π in C1-P1 catalyst dyad and C-H···π, C-H···F, and π···π in C2-P1) in stereocontrolling transition states are found to be the differentiating factors rendering one of the four stereochemically distinct transition states to be the lowest energy one for a given catalyst combination. These molecular insights suggest that subtle modifications to the catalyst framework could be further exploited in stereodivergent catalysis.Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative joint disease for which an effective therapeutic strategy has not yet been established. AGEs are widely recognized as a contributor to OA pathogenesis. GPR4, a recently discovered proton-sensing transmembrane receptor, has been shown to possess a wide range of physiological functions. However, the potential role of this receptor in chondrocytes and the pathogenesis of OA is unclear. In the present study, we investigated the potential of GPR4 to modulate the effects of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in SW1353 human chondrocytes. Light microscopy was used to characterize and localize the primordial, primary, secondary, and tertiary follicles. During oocyte growth and maturation, the morphology of mitochondria was roundish or ovoid in shape depending on the differentiation state, whereas their mean diameters oscillated between 0.5 and 0.7 µm, respectively, from primary and secondary follicles. Hooded mitochondria were found in the growing oocytes of the tertiary follicles. In addition to the pleomorphism of mitochondria, changes in the appearance of lipid droplets were also observed, along with the alignment of a single layer of cortical granules beneath the oolemma. In conclusion, our study is apparently the first report to portray morphological alterations of mitochondria that possess the hooded structure during the growth phase of porcine oocytes. The spatiotemporal and intrinsic changes during oogenesis/folliculogenesis are phenomena at the ultrastructural or subcellular level of porcine oocytes, highlighting an in-depth understanding of oocyte biology and impetus for future studies on practical mitochondrion replacement therapies for oocytes.In recent years, drug delivery systems have become some of the main topics within the biomedical field. As an example, in this study, we report the ability to predict and tune the release of curcumin (CUR), used as a model drug, from a designed combination of different poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) MPs kinds. In detail, all CUR-PLGA MPs were synthesized by double emulsion technique and their chemical-physical properties were characterized by Mastersizer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Moreover, for all the MPs, CUR encapsulation efficiency and kinetic release were investigated through the UV-vis spectroscopy. This approach, based on the combination of in silico and experimental methods, could be a promising platform in several biomedical applications such as vaccinations, cancer-treatment, diabetes therapy and so on.The non-canonical structures of nucleic acids are essential for their diverse functions during various biological processes. These non-canonical structures can undergo conformational exchange among multiple structural states. Data on their dynamics can illustrate conformational transitions that play important roles in folding, stability, and biological function. The bacterial communities collected at the baseline and post-chemotherapy, chosen from the time with the highest severity, were analyzed by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene. Twenty (43.5%) patients developed OM, the severity of which ranged from 1 to 5 according to the Oral Mucositis Assessment Scale (OMAS). Chemotherapy significantly increased the prevalence of HSV-1 detection but not that of Candida. The bacterial communities of patients after conditioning chemotherapy were characterized by aberrant enrichment of minor species and decreased evenness and Shannon diversity. After adjustment for age, gender, and neutropenia, the presence of HSV-1 was associated with the incidence of OM (odds ratio = 3.668, p = 0.004), while the decrease in Shannon diversity was associated with the severity of OM (β = 0.533 ± 0.220, p = 0.015). The control of HSV-1 and restoration of oral bacterial diversity may be a novel option to treat or prevent OM.Point detection (e.g., the centroid of the body) of species has been conducted in numerous studies. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES A number of studies examined secular trends in blood lipid profiles using time series data of national surveys whereas few studies investigated individual-level factors contributing to such trends. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/2-hydroxybenzylamine.html The present study aimed to examine secular trends in dietary and modifiable factors and hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia (HC) prevalence and evaluate their associations using time series data of nationwide surveys. SUBJECTS/METHODS The study included 41,073 Korean adults aged ≥ 30 years from the 2005, 2007-2009, 2010-2012, 2013-2015, and 2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. Stepwise logistic regression analysis was performed to select significant factors associated with HC, which was defined as serum LDL cholesterol levels ≥130 mg/dL. RESULTS The following factors showed a positive association with HC (P less then 0.05) for men having higher body mass index (BMI), being married, having an office job, and consuming higher dairy and vegetable oil products; for women having higher age or BMI, having no job or a non-office job, not in a low-income household, and consuming higher dairy products. In the given model, the 2016 survey data showed that a 2 kg/m2 reduction in BMI of obese persons resulted in a decreased HC prevalence from 30.8% to 29.3% among men and from 33.6% to 32.5% among women. CONCLUSIONS Based on these findings, it is suggested that primary prevention programs should advocate having proper BMI for Korean adults with a high-risk of HC. However, whether discouraging consumption of dairy and vegetable oil products can reduce HC prevalence warrants further studies with a prospective longitudinal design. ©2020 The Korean Nutrition Society and the Korean Society of Community Nutrition.BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass and results in vulnerability to fracture. Calcium and vitamin D are known to play an important role in bone health. Recently, potassium has been identified as another important factor in skeletal health. We examined the link between potassium intake and bone health among the Korean older adult population. SUBJECTS/METHODS This retrospective, cross-sectional study included 8,732 men and postmenopausal women over 50 years old who completed the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey (KNHANES) between 2008 and 2011. Potassium consumption was evaluated using a 24-hour recall method. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured at three sites (total hip, femur neck, and lumbar spine) by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Multinomial logistic regression was used to examine the link between potassium intake and prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia, after controlling for potential confounding variables. RESULTS The BMD of the total femur and Ward's triangle were significantly different according to the potassium intake among men (P = 0.031 and P = 0.010, respectively). Women in the top tertile for potassium intake showed higher BMD than those in the bottom tertile at all measurement sites (all P less then 0.05). Daily potassium intake was significantly related to a decreased risk of osteoporosis at the lumbar spine in postmenopausal women (odds ratios 0.68, 95% confidence interval 0.48-0.96, P trend = 0.031). However, the dietary potassium level was not related to the risk of osteoporosis in men. CONCLUSION Current findings indicate that higher dietary potassium levels have a favorable effect on bone health and preventing osteoporosis in older Korean women. ©2020 The Korean Nutrition Society and the Korean Society of Community Nutrition.BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES This study aimed to examine differences in weight control practices, beliefs, self-efficacy, and eating behaviors of weight class athletes according to weight control level. SUBJECTS/METHODS Subjects were weight class athletes from colleges in Gyeong-gi Province. Subjects (n = 182) responded to a questionnaire assessing study variables by self-report, and data on 151 athletes were used for statistical analysis. Subjects were categorized into High vs. Normal Weight Loss (HWL, NWL) groups depending on weight control level. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANCOVA, χ2-test, and multiple logistic regressions. RESULTS Seventy-three percent of subjects were in the HWL group. The two groups showed significant differences in weight control practices such as frequency (P less then 0.01), duration and magnitude of weight loss, methods, and satisfaction with weight control (P less then 0.001). Multiple logistic regression showed that self-efficacy (OR 0.846, 95% CI 0.730, 0.980), eating behaviorn.BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES We have previously designed the anti-cancer food scoring model (ACFS) 1.0, an evidence-based quantitative tool analyzing the anti-cancer or carcinogenic potential of diets. Analysis was performed using simple quantitative indexes divided into 6 categories (S, A, B, C, D, and E). In this study, we applied this scoring model to wider recipes and evaluated its nutritional relevance. MATERIALS/METHODS National or known regional databases were searched for recipes from 6 categories Korean out-dining, Korean home-dining, Western, Chinese, Mediterranean, and vegetarian. These recipes were scored using the ACFS formula and the nutrition profiles were analyzed. RESULTS Eighty-eight international recipes were analyzed. All S-graded recipes were from vegetarian or Mediterranean categories. The median code values of each category were B (Korean home-dining), C (Korean out-dining), B (Chinese), A (Mediterranean), S (vegetarian), and D (Western). The following profiles were correlated (P less then 0.05) with ACFS grades in the univariate trend analysis total calories, total fat, animal fat, animal protein, total protein, vitamin D, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, sodium, animal iron, zinc, selenium, and cholesterol (negative trends), and carbohydrate rate, fiber, water-soluble fiber, vitamin K, vitamin C, and plant calcium (positive trends). Multivariate analysis revealed that animal fat, animal iron, and niacin (negative trends) and animal protein, fiber, and vitamin C (positive trends) were statistically significant. Pantothenic acid and sodium showed non-significant negative trends (P less then 0.1), and vitamin B12 showed a non-significant positive trend. CONCLUSION This study provided a nutritional basis and extended the utility of ACFS, which is a bridgehead for future cancer-preventive clinical trials using ACFS. ©2020 The Korean Nutrition Society and the Korean Society of Community Nutrition.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES A number of studies examined secular trends in blood lipid profiles using time series data of national surveys whereas few studies investigated individual-level factors contributing to such trends. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/2-hydroxybenzylamine.html The present study aimed to examine secular trends in dietary and modifiable factors and hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia (HC) prevalence and evaluate their associations using time series data of nationwide surveys. SUBJECTS/METHODS The study included 41,073 Korean adults aged ≥ 30 years from the 2005, 2007-2009, 2010-2012, 2013-2015, and 2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. Stepwise logistic regression analysis was performed to select significant factors associated with HC, which was defined as serum LDL cholesterol levels ≥130 mg/dL. RESULTS The following factors showed a positive association with HC (P less then 0.05) for men having higher body mass index (BMI), being married, having an office job, and consuming higher dairy and vegetable oil products; for women having higher age or BMI, having no job or a non-office job, not in a low-income household, and consuming higher dairy products. In the given model, the 2016 survey data showed that a 2 kg/m2 reduction in BMI of obese persons resulted in a decreased HC prevalence from 30.8% to 29.3% among men and from 33.6% to 32.5% among women. CONCLUSIONS Based on these findings, it is suggested that primary prevention programs should advocate having proper BMI for Korean adults with a high-risk of HC. However, whether discouraging consumption of dairy and vegetable oil products can reduce HC prevalence warrants further studies with a prospective longitudinal design. ©2020 The Korean Nutrition Society and the Korean Society of Community Nutrition.BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass and results in vulnerability to fracture. Calcium and vitamin D are known to play an important role in bone health. Recently, potassium has been identified as another important factor in skeletal health. We examined the link between potassium intake and bone health among the Korean older adult population. SUBJECTS/METHODS This retrospective, cross-sectional study included 8,732 men and postmenopausal women over 50 years old who completed the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey (KNHANES) between 2008 and 2011. Potassium consumption was evaluated using a 24-hour recall method. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured at three sites (total hip, femur neck, and lumbar spine) by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Multinomial logistic regression was used to examine the link between potassium intake and prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia, after controlling for potential confounding variables. RESULTS The BMD of the total femur and Ward's triangle were significantly different according to the potassium intake among men (P = 0.031 and P = 0.010, respectively). Women in the top tertile for potassium intake showed higher BMD than those in the bottom tertile at all measurement sites (all P less then 0.05). Daily potassium intake was significantly related to a decreased risk of osteoporosis at the lumbar spine in postmenopausal women (odds ratios 0.68, 95% confidence interval 0.48-0.96, P trend = 0.031). However, the dietary potassium level was not related to the risk of osteoporosis in men. SUBJECTS/METHODS Subjects were weight class athletes from colleges in Gyeong-gi Province. Subjects (n = 182) responded to a questionnaire assessing study variables by self-report, and data on 151 athletes were used for statistical analysis. Subjects were categorized into High vs. Normal Weight Loss (HWL, NWL) groups depending on weight control level. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANCOVA, χ2-test, and multiple logistic regressions. RESULTS Seventy-three percent of subjects were in the HWL group. The two groups showed significant differences in weight control practices such as frequency (P less then 0.01), duration and magnitude of weight loss, methods, and satisfaction with weight control (P less then 0.001). Multiple logistic regression showed that self-efficacy (OR 0.846, 95% CI 0.730, 0.980), eating behaviorn.BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES We have previously designed the anti-cancer food scoring model (ACFS) 1.0, an evidence-based quantitative tool analyzing the anti-cancer or carcinogenic potential of diets. Analysis was performed using simple quantitative indexes divided into 6 categories (S, A, B, C, D, and E). In this study, we applied this scoring model to wider recipes and evaluated its nutritional relevance. MATERIALS/METHODS National or known regional databases were searched for recipes from 6 categories Korean out-dining, Korean home-dining, Western, Chinese, Mediterranean, and vegetarian. These recipes were scored using the ACFS formula and the nutrition profiles were analyzed. RESULTS Eighty-eight international recipes were analyzed. All S-graded recipes were from vegetarian or Mediterranean categories. The median code values of each category were B (Korean home-dining), C (Korean out-dining), B (Chinese), A (Mediterranean), S (vegetarian), and D (Western). The following profiles were correlated (P less then 0.05) with ACFS grades in the univariate trend analysis total calories, total fat, animal fat, animal protein, total protein, vitamin D, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, sodium, animal iron, zinc, selenium, and cholesterol (negative trends), and carbohydrate rate, fiber, water-soluble fiber, vitamin K, vitamin C, and plant calcium (positive trends). Multivariate analysis revealed that animal fat, animal iron, and niacin (negative trends) and animal protein, fiber, and vitamin C (positive trends) were statistically significant. Pantothenic acid and sodium showed non-significant negative trends (P less then 0.1), and vitamin B12 showed a non-significant positive trend. The results show that the differences between the farm households with and without access to ICT, as well as those who actively or passively acquire information, have a significant impact on the choice of sales channels. Using ICT increases the probability that farmers choose sales through middlemen and cooperatives and reduces the probability of self-sales. Actively acquiring information has a positive impact on the cooperative channel choice and a significant negative impact on self-sales. Accordingly, we recommend that the government should increase the penetration rate of ICT, strengthen the information technology in rural areas, emphasize the construction of information sources, such as the collection and distribution of market information, enhance information literacy among farmers, reduce their transaction costs, and increase overall farmer participation in the market.Overweight/obesity modified the effects of ambient particulate matter (PM) exposure on blood pressure (BP). This study aims to assess whether interaction of underweight and short-term PM exposure on BP exists in Chinese children. A cross-sectional analysis including 144,513 children aged 6 to 17 years in 2016 Health Promotion Program for Children and Adolescents of Suzhou, China, was performed. Daily concentrations of inhalable PM (PM10) and fine PM (PM2.5) were extracted from air monitoring stations close to students' schools. We applied generalized linear mixed-effects models to estimate the interactions. Estimated changes (95% confidence intervals (CIs)) of systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), and odds ratios (ORs) (95% CIs) for prevalence of HBP were calculated. Significant interactions between PM and underweight on BP and prevalence of high BP (HBP) were observed. For example, at lag 6, the ORs (95% CIs) for HBP by each 10 μg/m3 changes of PM2.5 were 1.066 (1.039, 1.093) and 1.036 (1.028, 1.043) among underweight and normal weight subjects, respectively; these values for PM10 were 1.048 (1.031, 1.065) and 1.025 (1.021, 1.030). At lag 5, the increases of SBP for PM2.5 were 0.32 (95% CI 0.22, 0.43) mmHg and 0.23 (95% CI 0.29, 0.26) mmHg, while changes of DBP were 0.27 (95% CI 0.18, 0.35) mmHg and 0.19 (95% CI 0.16, 0.21) mmHg among underweight and normal weight subjects, respectively. Stratified analyses demonstrated that these interactions were only obtained in males. This study aimed to evaluate the association between δ-ALAD gene polymorphism and BLL in cases of CP and their mothers. A case control study was carried out on 23 CP cases and equal number of healthy matched controls. The mothers of the included children were asked to answer a questionnaire involving the baseline clinical and demographic characteristics. Also, questionnaires were done to detect the sources of environmental lead exposure and screen lead exposure during the pregnancy period. BLL, δ-ALAD enzyme activity, and genetic analysis for ALAD G177C were done for each child and his mother. There was significant (p 0.05) differences between CP and the control group regarding frequency of ALAD G177C genotypes, while there was a significant (p = 0.04) increase in the frequency of ALAD 1-2 (GC) genotype in the mothers of the CP group associated with high BLL and significant decrease in δ-ALAD activity (p less then 0.001). The study can indicate the significance of δ-ALAD gene polymorphism in the prenatal exposure to lead and the affection of the developing brain, pointing to the importance of controlling lead in pregnant women especially those with ALAD 1-2 genotype.The Mitis group of streptococci includes an important human pathogen, Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) and about 20 other related species with **** lower pathogenicity. This study measured the rates of GTDs and iodine adequacy in 810 healthy Saudi women. Concentrations of serum thyroid hormones and 24-h urine iodine (24-h UIC), and GTDs were diagnosed according to the American Thyroid Association guidelines. Dietary and socioeconomic data to determine factors associated with GTDs and iodine insufficiency were collected. GTDs were detected in 265 women (32.7%) as follows subclinical (SCH; 20.2%) and overt (OH; 5.8%) hypothyroidism, isolated hypothyroxinemia (ISH; 4.7%) and hyperthyroidism (2%). The SCH (109.2 μg/L; IQR 77.2-149.7), OH (95.3 μg/L; IQR 74.3-130.5) and ISH (107.3 μg/L; IQR 65.5-133.1) groups had median 24-h UIC below the WHO recommended limit, whereas the euthyroid (191.4 μg/L; IQR 170.03-219.8) and hyperthyroid (159.5 μg/L; IQR 152.9-238.3) groups were iodine sufficient. Numbers of pregnancies, less education, not consuming iodized salt and not using iodine supplements increased risk of hypothyroidism and ISH.

SUMMARY Bulk RNA sequencing studies have demonstrated that human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes may be expressed in a cell type-specific and allele-specific fashion. Single-cell gene expression assays have the potential to further resolve these expression patterns, but currently available methods do not perform allele-specific quantification at the molecule level. Here we present scHLAcount, a postprocessing workflow for single-cell RNA-seq data that computes allele-specific molecule counts of the HLA genes based on a personalized reference constructed from the sample's HLA genotypes. Published by Oxford University Press.BACKGROUND We aimed to determine the prevalence of antibodies against angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1RAbs) in hypertensive adults and elucidate the relation of anti-hypertensive medication type to blood pressure (BP) among persons with and without AT1RAb. METHODS Sera from participants in the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span (HANDLS) study with hypertension were tested for AT1RAb using a commercial ELISA [(OneLambda; positive ≥ 17 units/ml)]. BP measurements, uncontrolled BP (systolic BP ≥140 and/or diastolic BP ≥ 90 mmHg) and effect of BP medication type were compared for AT1RAb positive (+) versus negative (-) participants using descriptive statistics and multivariable regression. RESULTS 132 (13.1%) participants were AT1RAb+. Compared to AT1RAb-, AT1RAb+ persons were more likely to be white (47 vs. 36.7%; p= 0.03) but had similar comorbid disease burden. In models adjusting for age, sex, and race, AT1RAb+ persons had higher diastolic BP (β= 2.61 mmHg; SE=1.03; p =0.01) compared to AT1RAb- participants. Rates of uncontrolled BP were similar between the groups. AT1RAb+ persons on an ARB (n=21) had a mean of 10.5 mmHg higher systolic BP (SE=4.56; p =0.02) compared to AT1RAb+ persons using other BP medications. The odds of uncontrolled BP among AT1RAb+ participants on an ARB was 2.05 times that of those on other medications. AT1RAb- persons prescribed an ACEi had 1.8 mmHg lower diastolic BP (SE=0.81; p=0.03) than AT1RAb- persons not prescribed an ACEi. To fill this gap in our understanding of cortical function, we built and analyzed a new large-scale, biologically constrained model of the input layer, 4Cα, of macaque V1. We called the new model CSY2. We challenged CSY2 with a three-parameter family of visual stimuli that varied in contrast, orientation, and spatial frequency. CSY2 accurately simulated experimental data and made many new predictions. It accounted for 1) the shapes of firing-rate-versus-contrast functions, 2) orientation and spatial frequency tuning versus contrast, and 3) the approximate contrast-invariance of cortical activity maps. Post-analysis revealed that the mechanisms that were needed to produce the successful simulations of contrast response included strong recurrent excitation and inhibition that find dynamic equilibria across the cortical surface, dynamic feedback between L6 and L4, and synaptic dynamics like inhibitory synaptic depression.Two novel 2D energetic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, [Pb(BTF)(H2O)2]n (1) and [Ba(BTF)(H2O)4]n (2), that possess the combined advantages of tetrazole and furazan rings were successfully synthesized. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/BKM-120.html Their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and fully characterized by elemental analysis and FT-IR spectroscopy. An interesting phenomenon of 100% temperature controlled switch between the exchange bias field and coercivity is observed. Angular dependence of exchange bias field and coercivity behaviors indicate that there exists a minimum nonzero angle between the magnetic field and ferromagnet/spin glass easy axis, depending on the stacking structure, to achieve a complete switch. We further study the thermal remnant magnetization, the Zeeman and exchange energy behaviors during hysteretic measurements and the magnetic training effect at different temperatures, designating that the spin glassy dynamics is crucial for such a smooth and full switch. This finding shows potential in designing an applicable thermally assisted read/write switchable spintronic devices, achieved simply by rotational magnetizing and nanostructure engineering.The chemical stability of oleate-capped sub-10 nm α- and β-NaREF4 NPs (RE = Y, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, Lu for α- and RE = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy for β-phase NPs) was evaluated under the acidic conditions used for ligand removal towards water dispersibility. It was found that for such small NPs, a pH lower than 3 was necessary for the water transfer to be efficient and to yield well-dispersed ligand-free NPs. In stark contrast to the generally considered good chemical stability of NaREF4, these conditions were observed to pose a risk to phase transformation of the NaREF4 NPs into **** larger, hexagonal- or orthorhombic-phase REF3, depending on the NP composition. A correlation between the thermodynamic stability of the α/β-NaREF4 and the hexagonal/orthorhombic REF3 phases - dictated by the RE ion choice - and the chemical stability of the NPs was found. For instance, β-NaGdF4 NPs remained stable, while α-NaGdF4 NPs underwent phase transformation into hexagonal GdF3. More general, NaREF4 NPs based on lighter RE ions were more prone towards phase transformation, while those based on heavier RE ions exhibited stability.

Published by Oxford University Press.BACKGROUND We aimed to determine the prevalence of antibodies against angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1RAbs) in hypertensive adults and elucidate the relation of anti-hypertensive medication type to blood pressure (BP) among persons with and without AT1RAb. METHODS Sera from participants in the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span (HANDLS) study with hypertension were tested for AT1RAb using a commercial ELISA [(OneLambda; positive ≥ 17 units/ml)]. BP measurements, uncontrolled BP (systolic BP ≥140 and/or diastolic BP ≥ 90 mmHg) and effect of BP medication type were compared for AT1RAb positive (+) versus negative (-) participants using descriptive statistics and multivariable regression. RESULTS 132 (13.1%) participants were AT1RAb+. Compared to AT1RAb-, AT1RAb+ persons were more likely to be white (47 vs. 36.7%; p= 0.03) but had similar comorbid disease burden. In models adjusting for age, sex, and race, AT1RAb+ persons had higher diastolic BP (β= 2.61 mmHg; SE=1.03; p =0.01) compared to AT1RAb- participants. Rates of uncontrolled BP were similar between the groups. AT1RAb+ persons on an ARB (n=21) had a mean of 10.5 mmHg higher systolic BP (SE=4.56; p =0.02) compared to AT1RAb+ persons using other BP medications. The odds of uncontrolled BP among AT1RAb+ participants on an ARB was 2.05 times that of those on other medications. AT1RAb- persons prescribed an ACEi had 1.8 mmHg lower diastolic BP (SE=0.81; p=0.03) than AT1RAb- persons not prescribed an ACEi. To fill this gap in our understanding of cortical function, we built and analyzed a new large-scale, biologically constrained model of the input layer, 4Cα, of macaque V1. We called the new model CSY2. We challenged CSY2 with a three-parameter family of visual stimuli that varied in contrast, orientation, and spatial frequency. CSY2 accurately simulated experimental data and made many new predictions. It accounted for 1) the shapes of firing-rate-versus-contrast functions, 2) orientation and spatial frequency tuning versus contrast, and 3) the approximate contrast-invariance of cortical activity maps. An interesting phenomenon of 100% temperature controlled switch between the exchange bias field and coercivity is observed. Angular dependence of exchange bias field and coercivity behaviors indicate that there exists a minimum nonzero angle between the magnetic field and ferromagnet/spin glass easy axis, depending on the stacking structure, to achieve a complete switch. We further study the thermal remnant magnetization, the Zeeman and exchange energy behaviors during hysteretic measurements and the magnetic training effect at different temperatures, designating that the spin glassy dynamics is crucial for such a smooth and full switch. Methods In this cross-trial analysis, we estimated treatment effects of comprehensive disease-modifying pharmacological therapy (ARNI, β blocker, MRA, and SGLT2 inhibitor) versus conventional therapy (ACE inhibitor or ARB ande alone (0·32 [0·24-0·43]), and all-cause mortality (0·53 [0·40-0·70]). Treatment with comprehensive disease-modifying pharmacological therapy was estimated to afford 2·7 additional years (for an 80-year-old) to 8·3 additional years (for a 55-year-old) free from cardiovascular death or first hospital admission for heart failure and 1·4 additional years (for an 80-year-old) to 6·3 additional years (for a 55-year-old) of survival compared with conventional therapy. BRD4-S and EN1 comodulate the extracellular matrix (ECM)-associated matrisome network, including type II cystatin gene cluster, mucin 5, and cathepsin loci, via enhancer regulation of cancer-associated genes and pathways. However, its efficacy remains to be validated. In this study, we compared the outcome of metformin users and nonusers in hospitalized COVID-19 patients with diabetes. Hospitalized diabetic patients with confirmed COVID-19 in the Tongji Hospital of Wuhan, China, from January 27, 2020 to March 24, 2020, were grouped into metformin and no-metformin groups according to the diabetic medications used. The demographics, characteristics, laboratory parameters, treatments, and clinical outcome in these patients were retrospectively assessed. A total of 283 patients (104 in the metformin and 179 in the no-metformin group) were included in this study. There were no significant differences between the two groups in gender, age, underlying diseases, clinical severity, and oxygen-support category at admission. The fasting blood glucose level of the metformin group was higher than that of the no-metformin group at admission and was under effective control in both groups after admission. Other laboratory parameters at admission and treatments after admission were not different between the two groups. The length of hospital stay did not differ between the two groups (21.0 days for metformin versus 19.5 days for no metformin, P = 0.74). However, in-hospital mortality was significantly lower in the metformin group (3/104 (2.9%) versus 22/179 (12.3%), P = 0.01). Antidiabetic treatment with metformin was associated with decreased mortality compared with diabetics not receiving metformin. We sought to explore if these are changing overtime, and if so are these changes for the better. Method The CCE-A 2009 and 2017 Competency Standards were located and downloaded. The competencies were placed into tables for a comparative analyses in a systematic manner to enable the identification of similarities and differences. In addition, word counts were conducted for the most commonly occurring words and this took place in December 2019. Results The 2017 competency standards were over three times smaller than the previous standards 2009 standards. More similarities than differences between the old and the new standards were found. There were 18 additions to the 2017 graduate competencies with many that were in unison with contemporary aspects of healthcare such as patient centred-care, respect for practitioner-patient boundaries and patient sexual orientation, transitioning patients to self-management, and consideration of improving lifestyle options.

MiR-4516 was low-expressed in pancreatic cancer tissues and cell lines. Overexpression of miR-4516 inhibited pancreatic cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasion, while promoted cell apoptosis in vitro. Further, overexpression of miR-4516 suppressed xenograft pancreatic tumor growth in vivo. Bioinformatics analysis was performed and miR-4516 was predicted to negatively regulate orthodenticle homeobox 1 (OTX1) expression by binding to its 3'-UTR. Consistently, OTX1 was highly expressed in pancreatic cancer tissues and cell lines. Knockdown of OTX1 expression suppressed pancreatic cancer cell migration and invasion, with down-regulated MMP2 and MMP9 expression. Moreover, we demonstrated that miR-4516 regulated pancreatic cancer cell growth, migration, invasion and apoptosis via targeting OTX1. Overexpression of OTX1 could partially abrogate the inhibitory effect of miR-4516. Taken together, we conclude that miR-4516 could function as a tumor suppressor via targeting OTX1. These findings suggest that miR-4516/OTX1 axis might be a novel therapeutic target for miRNA-based therapy for pancreatic cancer patients.Background Recent advances in nanomedicine provided promising alternatives for tumor treatment to improve the survival and life quality of cancer patients. This study was designed to explore the insight mechanisms of the anti-tumor effects of the novel nanocomposites (NCs) MFP-FePt-GO with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods A chemical co-reduction method was applied to the synthesis process of MFP-FePt-GO NCs. The chemical synthesis efficiency and morphology of the NCs were measured with spectroscope and transmission electron microscope. Colony formation assay and cell apoptosis were conducted to assess the radiosensitivity effect of NCs with radiation. Then, we detected cell mitochondrial membrane potential and reactive oxygen species (ROS) level by flow cytometry to further explore the cause of cell death. Immunofluorescence staining and Confocal were carried out to determine the DNA damage repair. A Lewis lung carcinoma animal model was used to measure safety and anti-tumor efficiency in vivo. Results The novel NCs MFP-FePt-GO designed on a lamellar-structure magnetic graphene oxide and polyethylene glycol drug delivery system was synthesized and functionalized for co-delivery of metronidazole and 5-fluorouracil. While no severe allergies, liver and kidney damage, or drug-related deaths were observed, MFP-FePt-GO NCs promoted radiosensitivity of NSCLC cells both in vivo and in vitro. It improved the effects of radiation via activating intrinsic mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis and impairing DNA damage repair. This NCs also induced a ROS burst, which suppressed the antioxidant protein expression and induced cell apoptosis. Furthermore, MFP-FePt-GO NCs prevented NSCLC cell migration and invasion. Conclusion MFP-FePt-GO NCs showed a synergistic anti-tumor effect with radiation to eliminate tumors. With good safety and efficacy, this novel NCs could be a potential radiosensitive agent for NSCLC patients.The powerful pro-angiogenic capacity of human amnion-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSCs) could be a valuable therapeutic angiogenesis strategy for bone regeneration. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this process remain largely unknown. Herein, we report upregulated expression of circular RNA 100290 (circ-100290) and an enhanced angiogenic phenotype of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) incubated with conditioned medium from hAMSCs (hAMSC-CM), whereas downregulation of circ-100290 reversed the pro-angiogenic capacity of HUVECs induced by hAMSC-CM. Circ-100290/microRNA 449a (miR-449a)/endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and circ-100290/miR-449a/vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) axes were predicted by a bioinformatics method and subsequently verified by luciferase reporter assays in vitro. Gain- or loss-of-function assays were then performed using small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) targeting circ-100290, or a plasmid overexpressing circ-100290. As expected, downregulation of circ-100290 in HUVECs led to weakened tube formation and migration of HUVECs following hAMSC-CM treatment, along with decreased expression of eNOS and VEGFA. In contrast, upregulation of circ-100290 led to enhanced tube formation and migration of HUVECs following hAMSC-CM treatment, along with increased expression of eNOS and VEGFA. Furthermore, a miR-449a inhibitor could largely rescue the effect of circ-100290 silencing on HUVECs, whereas a miR-449a mimic could significantly rescue the effect of overexpressing circ-100290 on HUVECs. Functional assays using eNOS or VEGF receptor inhibitors indicated eNOS and VEGFA may be important targets of miR-449a. Finally, a Matrigel plug assay revealed weakened angiogenesis when circ-100290 was silenced in HUVECs, but enhanced angiogenesis when circ-100290 was overexpressed in vivo. Our results suggest that circ-100290 might function via miR-449a/eNOS and miR-449a/VEGFA axes in the pro-angiogenic role of hAMSC-CM on HUVECs.Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as important regulators involved in the pathogenesis of many diseases. However, it is still unknown if they contribute to the occurrence of acute pancreatitis (AP). Here, we identified a lncRNA CASC2 (Cancer Susceptibility Candidate 2) was significantly upregulated in the pancreatic tissues from AP patients. Knockdown or overexpression of CASC2 in vitro could specifically repress or induce the expression of two proinflammatory cytokines including IL6 (Interleukin 6) and IL17, respectively. Changing the expression levels of several transcription factors that were predicted to bind to the promoter of CASC2, we found c-****could specifically regulate the expression of CASC2. Using immunoprecipitation, mass spectrometry, and co-immunoprecipitation assays, we proved that c-****assembled a transcriptional complex with PCAF (p300/CBP-associated Factor) and CtBP1/2 (C-terminal Binding Protein 1 and 2), terming as the CtBP-PCAF-c-MYC (CPM) complex. Further investigation revealed that CtBPs were amplified in the pancreatic tissues from AP patients and they functioned as coactivators to induce the expression of CASC2 and thus led to the upregulation of IL6 and IL17.

This study was designed to explore the insight mechanisms of the anti-tumor effects of the novel nanocomposites (NCs) MFP-FePt-GO with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods A chemical co-reduction method was applied to the synthesis process of MFP-FePt-GO NCs. The chemical synthesis efficiency and morphology of the NCs were measured with spectroscope and transmission electron microscope. Colony formation assay and cell apoptosis were conducted to assess the radiosensitivity effect of NCs with radiation. Then, we detected cell mitochondrial membrane potential and reactive oxygen species (ROS) level by flow cytometry to further explore the cause of cell death. Immunofluorescence staining and Confocal were carried out to determine the DNA damage repair. A Lewis lung carcinoma animal model was used to measure safety and anti-tumor efficiency in vivo. Results The novel NCs MFP-FePt-GO designed on a lamellar-structure magnetic graphene oxide and polyethylene glycol drug delivery system was synthesized and functionalized for co-delivery of metronidazole and 5-fluorouracil. While no severe allergies, liver and kidney damage, or drug-related deaths were observed, MFP-FePt-GO NCs promoted radiosensitivity of NSCLC cells both in vivo and in vitro. It improved the effects of radiation via activating intrinsic mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis and impairing DNA damage repair. This NCs also induced a ROS burst, which suppressed the antioxidant protein expression and induced cell apoptosis. Furthermore, MFP-FePt-GO NCs prevented NSCLC cell migration and invasion. Conclusion MFP-FePt-GO NCs showed a synergistic anti-tumor effect with radiation to eliminate tumors. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this process remain largely unknown. Herein, we report upregulated expression of circular RNA 100290 (circ-100290) and an enhanced angiogenic phenotype of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) incubated with conditioned medium from hAMSCs (hAMSC-CM), whereas downregulation of circ-100290 reversed the pro-angiogenic capacity of HUVECs induced by hAMSC-CM. Circ-100290/microRNA 449a (miR-449a)/endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and circ-100290/miR-449a/vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) axes were predicted by a bioinformatics method and subsequently verified by luciferase reporter assays in vitro. Gain- or loss-of-function assays were then performed using small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) targeting circ-100290, or a plasmid overexpressing circ-100290. As expected, downregulation of circ-100290 in HUVECs led to weakened tube formation and migration of HUVECs following hAMSC-CM treatment, along with decreased expression of eNOS and VEGFA. In contrast, upregulation of circ-100290 led to enhanced tube formation and migration of HUVECs following hAMSC-CM treatment, along with increased expression of eNOS and VEGFA. Furthermore, a miR-449a inhibitor could largely rescue the effect of circ-100290 silencing on HUVECs, whereas a miR-449a mimic could significantly rescue the effect of overexpressing circ-100290 on HUVECs. Functional assays using eNOS or VEGF receptor inhibitors indicated eNOS and VEGFA may be important targets of miR-449a. Finally, a Matrigel plug assay revealed weakened angiogenesis when circ-100290 was silenced in HUVECs, but enhanced angiogenesis when circ-100290 was overexpressed in vivo. Knockdown or overexpression of CASC2 in vitro could specifically repress or induce the expression of two proinflammatory cytokines including IL6 (Interleukin 6) and IL17, respectively. Changing the expression levels of several transcription factors that were predicted to bind to the promoter of CASC2, we found c-MYC could specifically regulate the expression of CASC2. Using immunoprecipitation, mass spectrometry, and co-immunoprecipitation assays, we proved that c-MYC assembled a transcriptional complex with PCAF (p300/CBP-associated Factor) and CtBP1/2 (C-terminal Binding Protein 1 and 2), terming as the CtBP-PCAF-c-MYC (CPM) complex. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles are used on a massive scale in commercial and industrial products. Of specific concern is how the inhalation of these nanoparticles in a manufacturing setting may affect human health. Adsorption sites of alkanes within the MOF channels have been identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, and the adsorption mechanism was explored through computational calculations and modeling. The highly selective adsorption of the MOF should be attributed to its optimal pore dimensions.We report for the first time a novel series of tellurides bearing sulfonamide as selective and potent inhibitors of the β-class carbonic anhydrase (CA; EC 4.2.1.1) enzyme expressed in Leishmania donovani protozoa. This twinning modifies the positions of O atoms in the Si-O-Si framework while preserving the positions of Si atoms that define the topology of polyhedral cages. This type of twinning therefore does not disrupt the microporous channels via the 8-membered rings of the 19-hedral cages and little disturbs the adsorption and permeation of gas molecules in DDR. The cell volume of DDR increased monotonically with an increase in temperature up to ∼673 K accompanied by an elongation perpendicular to the [0001] axis and a shrinkage along the [0001] axis.

BACKGROUND The built environment is a structural determinant of health and has been shown to influence health expenditures, behaviors, and outcomes. Traditional methods of assessing built environment characteristics are time-consuming and difficult to combine or compare. Google Street View (GSV) images represent a large, publicly available data source that can be used to create indicators of characteristics of the physical environment with machine learning techniques. The aim of this study is to use GSV images to measure the association of built environment features with health-related behaviors and outcomes at the census tract level. METHODS We used computer vision techniques to derive built environment indicators from approximately 31 million GSV images at 7.8 million intersections. Associations between derived indicators and health-related behaviors and outcomes on the census-tract level were assessed using multivariate regression models, controlling for demographic factors and socioeconomic position. Statistical significance was assessed at the α = 0.05 level. RESULTS Single lane roads were associated with increased diabetes and obesity, while non-single-family home buildings were associated with decreased obesity, diabetes and inactivity. Street greenness was associated with decreased prevalence of physical and mental distress, as well as decreased binge drinking, but with increased obesity. Socioeconomic disadvantage was negatively associated with binge drinking prevalence and positively associated with all other health-related behaviors and outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Structural determinants of health such as the built environment can influence population health. Our study suggests that higher levels of urban development have mixed effects on health and adds further evidence that socioeconomic distress has adverse impacts on multiple physical and mental health outcomes.BACKGROUND Birth order has been shown to affect the health of the child; less is known, however, about how birth order affects caries development in children. The study followed the cohort until subjects reached 7 years of age. A forward stepwise logistic binary regression was done for the multivariate analysis with adjustments for sociodemographic factors. RESULTS At age 3 years, 94% had no fillings or manifest caries lesions. During the study period, 22.5% (n = 14,711) developed dental caries. The final logistic regression analysis found a statistically significant positive association between birth order and caries increment. Further, excess risk increased with higher birth order; with the mother's first-born child as reference, risk for the second-born child was OR 1.17, 95% CI = 1.12-1.23; for the third-born child, OR 1.47, 95% CI = 1.38-1.56; for the fourth-born child, OR 1.69, 95% CI = 1.52-1.88; and for the fifth-born or higher birth-order child, OR 1.84, 95% CI = 1.58-2.14. CONCLUSIONS These findings show that birth order influences caries development in siblings, suggesting that birth order can be regarded as a predictor for caries development in young children. This factor may be helpful in assessing caries risk in preschool children and should be considered in caries prevention work in young children with older siblings.BACKGROUND Diagnosis and follow-up of retinal diseases may be improved if the thickness of the various retinal layers, in addition to the total retinal thickness, is taken into account. Here we measured the thickness of the macular retinal layers in a population-based study group to assess the normative values and their associations. METHODS Using spectral-domain optical coherence tomographic images (Spectralis®, wavelength 870 nm; Heidelberg Engineering Co, Heidelberg, Germany), we measured the thickness of the macular retinal layers in participants of the population-based Beijing Eye Study without ocular diseases and without systematic diseases, such as arterial hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, previous myocardial infarction, cerebral trauma and stroke. Segmentation and measurement of the retinal layers was performed automatically in each of the horizontal scans. RESULTS The study included 384 subjects (mean age60.0 ± 8.0 years). Associated factors of the FTO candidate gene among South Asians with PCOS are unknown. METHODS This study aimed to determine the association between FTO (rs9939609) polymorphism with clinical (BMI, acanthosis nigricans, hirsutism) and biochemical (serum kisspeptin and testosterone levels) characteristics of PCOS in a cohort of Sri Lankan women. RESULTS At age 3 years, 94% had no fillings or manifest caries lesions. During the study period, 22.5% (n = 14,711) developed dental caries. The final logistic regression analysis found a statistically significant positive association between birth order and caries increment. Further, excess risk increased with higher birth order; with the mother's first-born child as reference, risk for the second-born child was OR 1.17, 95% CI = 1.12-1.23; for the third-born child, OR 1.47, 95% CI = 1.38-1.56; for the fourth-born child, OR 1.69, 95% CI = 1.52-1.88; and for the fifth-born or higher birth-order child, OR 1.84, 95% CI = 1.58-2.14. CONCLUSIONS These findings show that birth order influences caries development in siblings, suggesting that birth order can be regarded as a predictor for caries development in young children. This factor may be helpful in assessing caries risk in preschool children and should be considered in caries prevention work in young children with older siblings.BACKGROUND Diagnosis and follow-up of retinal diseases may be improved if the thickness of the various retinal layers, in addition to the total retinal thickness, is taken into account. Here we measured the thickness of the macular retinal layers in a population-based study group to assess the normative values and their associations. METHODS Using spectral-domain optical coherence tomographic images (Spectralis®, wavelength 870 nm; Heidelberg Engineering Co, Heidelberg, Germany), we measured the thickness of the macular retinal layers in participants of the population-based Beijing Eye Study without ocular diseases and without systematic diseases, such as arterial hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, previous myocardial infarction, cerebral trauma and stroke. Segmentation and measurement of the retinal layers was performed automatically in each of the horizontal scans. RESULTS The study included 384 subjects (mean age60.0 ± 8.0 years). The mean thickness of the whole retinhe associations between decreasing thickness of most retinal layers with older age and the correlation of a higher thickness of some retinal layers with male gender may clinically be taken into account.BACKGROUND PCOS is a common disorder of women due to genetic, endocrine and environmental effects that manifests from puberty. The rs9939609 variant of fat mass and obesity associated (FTO) gene is linked to metabolic derangement in PCOS. We previously identified FTO (rs9939609) as a susceptibility locus for PCOS among Sri Lankan women and also explored the role of kisspeptin. Associated factors of the FTO candidate gene among South Asians with PCOS are unknown. METHODS This study aimed to determine the association between FTO (rs9939609) polymorphism with clinical (BMI, acanthosis nigricans, hirsutism) and biochemical (serum kisspeptin and testosterone levels) characteristics of PCOS in a cohort of Sri Lankan women. Genetic and clinical data including serum kisspeptin and testosterone concentrations of our previously reported cases (n = 55) and controls (n = 110) were re-analyzed, specifically for an association with rs9939609 variant of FTO gene. BACKGROUND Bimanual clot evacuation (BCE) is a simple clinical manoeuvre that may reduce need for surgical intervention in the management of severe postpartum haemorrhage (PPH). We sought to determine whether performing BCE in cases of severe PPH after vaginal birth reduces the need for surgical intervention. METHODS A retrospective chart review of women who delivered vaginally with a severe PPH between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2014 in a single tertiary women's hospital in Sydney, Australia was conducted. Severe PPH was classified as a blood loss ≥1000mls. The need for surgical management (including operating theatre uterine exploration or evacuation, intrauterine balloon tamponade, repair of significant trauma, uterine or internal iliac artery ligation, B-Lynch suture insertion or hysterectomy) was the primary outcome measure, as expressed by need for operating theatre utilisation. RESULTS From a cohort of 438, 149 women (34.0%) had BCE, of whom 29 (19.5%) required surgical management compared to 103 of 289 women with no BCE (35.6%); an odds ratio (OR) of 0.38 for BCE (confidence interval 0.20-0.72; p = 0.003). Early BCE ( 1 h of delivery). There was no reduction in estimated blood loss (p = 0.86) or blood transfusion (p = 0.71) with BCE. CONCLUSION Our study suggests BCE reduces theatre utilisation in the context of severe PPH following vaginal delivery. The aim of the present study was to assess cross-sectional associations between habitual SSB consumption and preschoolers' diet, physical activity, sedentary behaviour as well as parental and child characteristics in Malaysian preschoolers aged 3 to 6 y. METHODS A total of 590 preschoolers, comprising 317 boys and 273 girls were included. Pre-pilot parental questionnaires were used to assess diet, physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour practices and anthropometry was assessed in preschoolers and their parents. RESULTS Multiple logistic regression analyses showed that preschoolers with more frequent weekly intake of snacks [OR 2.7; 95% CI, 1.6-4.4; p less then 0.001] and monthly fast food consumption [OR 3.5; 95% CI, 1.9-6.3; p less then 0.001], were associated with higher SSB intake (≥5 days in a week), after adjustments of potential confounders. Preschoolers with higher daily fruit and vegetable intake had lower SSB intake [OR 0.4; 95% CI, 0.2-0.8; p = 0.011]. METHOD This analyze used data of 3068 Vietnamese people aged 18-65 years from the national representative STEPS survey in 2015 (STEPS2015). The survey collected PA-related data using the Global PA Questionnaire Version 2 and those on provicial-level characteristics from two surveys in 2014, namely the Intercensal Population and Housing Survey (IPHS) and The Vietnam Household Living Standard Survey (VLSS2014). Multilevel linear analyze was performed with individual and provincial characteristics as independent variables and the metabolic equivalent (MET) score - the indicator of individual PA - as the dependent variable. RESULTS Male and female participants with insufficient PA accounted for 20.2 and 35.7%, respectively. Both individual- and provicial-level SES were inversely associated with the individual PA level. As the provincial-level monthly income increased by 1 million Vietnam Dongs, the total PA score of individuals residing in that province reduced by 1900 METS. A buffering effect was reported between provincial and individual SES, as the provincial average income increased, the differences in PA scores between different SES groups decreased. CONCLUSION Our data suggest that Vietnamese individuals in low SES groups tended to be more physically active than those in high SES groups because their PA was largely related to work.BACKGROUND Dysphagia is common after stroke. Patients with dysphagia have a higher risk of stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) and poor outcomes. Early detection of dysphagia is necessary to identify and manage patients at high risk of aspiration. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of the systematic administration of the volume-viscosity swallow test (V-VST) in patients with acute ischaemic stroke. METHODS This was a retrospective observational study that enrolled patients with acute ischaemic stroke in two consecutive time periods pre-V-VST, when the 30-mL water-swallowing test (WST) was systematically administered, and V-VST, when all patients underwent the WST and the V-VST test was systematically administered if the patient failed the WST. RESULTS Two hundred and 42 patients were enrolled. The mean age of the participants was 68.8 ± 10.88 years, 61.2% were male, and the median National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score was 3 (IQR, 1-6). A total of 147 patients were enrolled during the pre-V-VST period and 95 were enrolled during the V-VST period. There was a significant difference in the occurrence of SAP (21.8% vs. 10.5%, p = 0.024) and the rate of nasogastric tube feeding (25.9% vs. 14.7%, p = 0.040) between the two groups, and no differences were found in the length of hospital stay (p = 0.277) or the total cost of hospitalization (p = 0.846). CONCLUSIONS The V-VST was a better clinical screening tool, and it can also provide detailed suggestions regarding dietary modifications to prevent aspiration and SAP.
