The L730V/I mutations at the roof of the solvent-front site of the RET kinase were identified as strongly resistant to pralsetinib but not to selpercatinib. Selpercatinib effectively inhibited these mutants and the KIF5B-RET(L730V/I) oncogene-driven tumors.L-Rhamnose is an important monosaccharide both as nutrient source and as building block in prokaryotic glycoproteins and glycolipids. Generation of those composite molecules requires activated precursors being provided e. g. in form of nucleotide sugars such as dTDP-β-L-rhamnose (dTDP-L-Rha). dTDP-L-Rha is synthesized in a conserved 4-step reaction which is canonically catalyzed by the enzymes RmlABCD. An intact pathway is especially important for the fitness of pseudomonads, as dTDP-L-Rha is essential for the activation of the polyproline specific translation elongation factor EF-P in these bacteria. Within the scope of this study, we investigated the dTDP-L-Rha-biosynthesis route of Pseudomonas putida KT2440 with a focus on the last two steps. Bioinformatic analysis in combination with a screening approach revealed that epimerization of dTDP-4-keto-6-deoxy-D-glucose to dTDP-4-keto-6-deoxy-L-mannose is catalyzed by the two paralogous proteins PP_1782 (RmlC1) and PP_0265 (RmlC2), whereas the reduction to the final product is solely mediated by PP_1784 (RmlD). Thus, we also exclude the distinct RmlD homolog PP_0500 and the genetically linked nucleoside diphosphate-sugar epimerase PP_0501 to be involved in dTDP-L-Rha formation, other than suggested by certain databases. Together our analysis contributes to the molecular understanding how this important nucleotide-sugar is synthesized in pseudomonads.In this work we have tried to prepare Ni and Ag doped ZnO nanopowders using the sol gel technique. The influence of Ni and Ag (1, 3 and 5 mol.%) on the crystalline structure and optical properties of ZnO was investigated. The samples were characterized by XRD, FTIR and UV-visible spectrophotometer. XRD patterns confirmed the wurtzite formation of doped and undoped ZnO nanopowders. The average crystallite sizes of the prepared samples found from XRD were 19 nm for undoped ZnO, from 17 to 22 nm for Ni-ZnO and from 19 to 26 nm for Ag-ZnO. The average crystallite size of Ag-ZnO increased with increasing Ag contents. Different optical properties of Ni-ZnO and Ag-ZnO nanopowders were observed for different Ni and Ag content. The band gaps of Ni-ZnO and Ag-ZnO nanopowders were lower than that of the undoped ZnO (3.1 eV). The band gaps of Ag-ZnO were lower than that of Ni-ZnO. The optical properties of ZnO were enhanced by Ni (mol.%) in the UV region and by Ag (3 and 5 mol.%) in the visible region.Superhydrophobic sponges have considerable potential for oil/water separation. Most of the methods used for superhydrophobic modification of sponges require toxic or harmful solvents, which have the drawbacks of hazardous to environment, expensive, and complex to utilize. Moreover, the hydrophobic layer on the surface of sponge is often easily destroyed. In this paper, a highly efficient superhydrophobic sponge with excellent reusability was developed by using a facile, simple and environmentally friendly dopamine biomimetic bonding method. Different types of sponges, such as melamine, polyethylene or polyurethane sponge wastes, were used as raw materials to prepare superhydrophobic sponges, which possess the advantages of inexpensive and abundant. The effects of different dopamine polymerization time and different hydrophobic agent dosage on the hydrophobicity and oil absorption capacity of melamine sponges were optimized. The study results showed that the water contact angle of the superhydrophobic sponge could reach 153° with excellent organic solvent absorption capacity of 165.9 g/g. Furthermore, the superhydrophobic sponge retained approximately 92.1% of its initial absorption capacity after 35 reutilization cycles. We included patients undergoing coronary angiography and the functional assessment of intermediate (40 to 70%) coronary lesions in 2 centers. iFR measurement was performed by pressure-recording guidewire and automatically calculated at the core laboratory using the manufacturers' dedicated software. Quantitative parameters of the coronary lesions were calculated by an automatic edge-detection system. Minimal luminal diameter (MLD), reference diameter (RD), percent diameter stenosis, and length of the lesion were measured. Positiong patients undergoing functional assessment of intermediate coronary lesions by instantaneous wave-free ratio, no impact of sex was observed on the absolute values or the rate of positivity of iFR.
Many patients with certain conditions require catheterizable channels for bladder and bowel management. There are a variety of accepted techniques for creating these channels; the split appendix technique enables the use of this organ for both procedures, obviating the need for more complex surgical procedures. Studies comparing outcomes across catheterizable channel types are limited.
The aim of this study was to compare the urinary channel complication rates of the split appendix, intact appendix and transverse ileal tube (Monti) channels. We hypothesized that complication rates would be the same across all channel types.
We retrospectively reviewed consecutive patients who underwent surgical creation of a urinary continent catheterizable channel. We recorded demographics, underlying diagnosis, body mass index, stoma location, surgical techniques, and surgical revisions. The primary outcome was complication (stenosis, leakage, or both) with or without surgical revision, and to compare the three differer rate of channel complications than other techniques. The authors acknowledge that the split appendix technique has been proven feasible and effective, however recognize that it may not be appropriate for all patients and include counseling of the risks of its use.
Hypospadias is one of the most common congenital anomalies of the male genitalia. Sonic hedgehog homologue (SHH) signalling pathway is believed to be involved in the development of the male genital system.
In this clinical prospective study, the role of the SHH pathway in hypospadias aetiology was investigated.
In this study, 200 healthy children (boys without hypospadias, control group), 118 patients (boys with distal hypospadias) and 82 patients (boys with proximal hypospadias) of age 0-16 years were included. The expression of the genes suppressor of fused protein (SUFU), SHH, protein patched homologue (PTCH; PTCH1 and PTCH2), glioma-associated oncogene homologue (GLI; GLI1, GLI2, GLI3 and GLI4), smoothened, frizzled-class receptor (SMO) and serine/threonine-protein kinase 36 (STK36) that are involved in SHH pathway were investigated. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/rbn-2397.html Furthermore, polymorphism analyses of GLI2, SHH and PTCH1 genes were performed. Simulation-based education (SBE) can replicate the challenging aspects of real-world clinical environments, while providing a safe and less intimidating setting. Literature supports its use within medical radiation science (MRS) training for safe practice of psychomotor skills, development of problem solving, team working, interpersonal and decision-making skills and embedding awareness of patient safety. This project aimed to quantify usage of SBE resources and activities internationally and to evaluate how this changed during COVID-19 restrictions.
An anonymous online survey tool gathered data relating to programme demographics, simulation resources, simulation activities and future plans. A link to the survey was distributed to programme leads via social media, professional bodies and national networks.
A total of 72 responses were received from a range of countries and representing a range of programme structures. Most respondents reported up to 100h of SBE per student per year with low fidelity resources and image viewing software featuring most prominently.

The pathogenesis of pemphigus vulgaris is complex, and it involves an in-depth understanding of the various predisposing factors, provoking factors, and progression mechanisms. Congregation of the various triggering pathways will open our minds to understand pemphigus vulgaris better and in turn develop a reliable treatment in the near future.During the Quaternary, large climate oscillations impacted the distribution and demography of species globally. Two approaches have played a major role in reconstructing changes through time Bayesian Skyline Plots (BSPs), which reconstruct population fluctuations based on genetic data, and Species Distribution Models (SDMs), which allow us to ****-cast the range occupied by a species based on its climatic preferences. In this paper, we contrast these two approaches by applying them to a large data set of 102 Holarctic bird species, for which both mitochondrial DNA sequences and distribution maps are available, to reconstruct their dynamics since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Most species experienced an increase in effective population size (Ne , as estimated by BSPs) as well as an increase in geographical range (as reconstructed by SDMs) since the LGM; however, we found no correlation between the magnitude of changes in Ne and range size. The only clear signal we could detect was a later and greater increase in Ne for wetland birds compared to species that live in other habitats, a probable consequence of a delayed and more extensive increase in the extent of this habitat type after the LGM. The lack of correlation between SDM and BSP reconstructions could not be reconciled even when range shifts were considered. We suggest that this pattern might be linked to changes in population densities, which can be independent of range changes, and caution that interpreting either SDMs or BSPs independently is problematic and potentially misleading.Stress is a key factor in the development and progress of diseases. Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, cause the motor and cognitive malfunctions that are spontaneously stressful and also can disturb the neural circuits that promote stress responses. The interruption of those circuits leads to aggressive and inappropriate behavior. In addition, stress contributes to illness and may exacerbate symptoms. In this review, we present stress-activated neural pathways involved in Alzheimer's disease from a clinical and experimental point of view, as well as supportive drugs and therapies.The systematic review tried to answer the following question Does the melatonin administered systemically or topically ameliorate patients involved with oral health conditions or dental procedures? Eligibility criteria included only randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) with at least 10 participants that compared patients that received melatonin as a treatment before and/or after their oral intervention topically or systemically, with control patients. The pathogenesis of pemphigus vulgaris is complex, and it involves an in-depth understanding of the various predisposing factors, provoking factors, and progression mechanisms. Congregation of the various triggering pathways will open our minds to understand pemphigus vulgaris better and in turn develop a reliable treatment in the near future.During the Quaternary, large climate oscillations impacted the distribution and demography of species globally. Two approaches have played a major role in reconstructing changes through time Bayesian Skyline Plots (BSPs), which reconstruct population fluctuations based on genetic data, and Species Distribution Models (SDMs), which allow us to back-cast the range occupied by a species based on its climatic preferences. In this paper, we contrast these two approaches by applying them to a large data set of 102 Holarctic bird species, for which both mitochondrial DNA sequences and distribution maps are available, to reconstruct their dynamics since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Most species experienced an increase in effective population size (Ne , as estimated by BSPs) as well as an increase in geographical range (as reconstructed by SDMs) since the LGM; however, we found no correlation between the magnitude of changes in Ne and range size. The only clear signal we could detect was a later and greater increase in Ne for wetland birds compared to species that live in other habitats, a probable consequence of a delayed and more extensive increase in the extent of this habitat type after the LGM. The lack of correlation between SDM and BSP reconstructions could not be reconciled even when range shifts were considered. We suggest that this pattern might be linked to changes in population densities, which can be independent of range changes, and caution that interpreting either SDMs or BSPs independently is problematic and potentially misleading.Stress is a key factor in the development and progress of diseases. Liberty-restricting measures have been implemented for centuries to limit the spread of infectious diseases. This article considers if and when it may be ethically acceptable to impose selective liberty-restricting measures in order to reduce the negative impacts of a pandemic by preventing particularly vulnerable groups of the community from contracting the disease. We argue that the commonly accepted explanation-that liberty restrictions may be justified to prevent harm to others when this is the least restrictive option-fails to adequately accommodate the complexity of the issue or the difficult choices that must be made, as illustrated by the COVID-19 pandemic. We introduce a dualist consequentialist approach, weighing utility at both a population and individual level, which may provide a better framework for considering the justification for liberty restrictions. While liberty-restricting measures may be justified on the basis of significant benefits to the population and small costs for overall utility to individuals, the question of whether it is acceptable to discriminate should be considered separately. This is because the consequentialist approach does not adequately account for the value of equality. This value may be protected through the application of an additional proportionality test. An algorithm for making decisions is proposed. Ultimately whether selective liberty-restricting measures are imposed will depend on a range of factors, including how widespread infection is in the community, the level of risk and harm a society is willing to accept, and the efficacy and cost of other mitigation options.Both the diagnosis and medical treatment of gender dysphoria (GD)-particularly in children and adolescents-have been the subject of significant controversy in recent years. In this paper, we outline the means by which GD is diagnosed in children and adolescents, the currently available treatment options, and the bioethical issues these currently raise. In particular, we argue that the families and healthcare providers of children presenting with GD currently face two main ethical dilemmas in decision making regarding treatment the pathway dilemma and the consent dilemma.
Hospitals commonly examine patient safety culture and other quality indicators to evaluate and improve performance in relation to quality and safety. A growing body of research has separately examined relationships between patient safety culture and patient experience on clinical outcomes and other quality indicators. However, there is a knowledge gap regarding the relationship between these two important domains. This article describes the protocol for a scoping review of published literature examining the relationship between patient safety culture and patient experience in hospital settings. The scoping review will provide an overview of research into the relationship between patient safety culture and patient experience in hospital contexts, map key concepts underpinning these domains and identify research gaps for further study.
The scoping review will be conducted using the five stages of Arksey and O'Malley's framework identify the research question; identify relevant studies; study selection; chart data; and collate, summarise and report the results. The inclusion criteria will be applied using the Population, Concept and Context Framework. Searches will be conducted in the CINAHL, Cochrane Library, ProQuest, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Scopus and SciELO databases, without applying date range limits. Hand-searching of grey literature will also be performed to find relevant, non-indexed literature. Data will be extracted using a standardised data extraction form developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. Both descriptive and thematic analyses will be undertaken to scope key concepts within the body of reviewed literature.

The same pattern was seen for cohabiting status, while inequality was smaller and more constant for income.
Patients with low income, low education and living alone were associated with lower chance of being initiated with OAC. For education and cohabiting status, the crude difference reduced around 2011, when more detailed clinical guidelines were implemented in Denmark. Our results indicate that new guidelines might reduce inequality in OAC initiation and that new, high-cost drugs increase inequality.

This case report describes a 57-year-old male with symptoms of tardive akathisia after long-term metoclopramide treatment. As metoclopramide is a dopamine receptor antagonist, it has the potential to cause drug-induced movement disorders, including akathisia, which is characterised by an inner restlessness resulting in a need for constant movement. Tardive akathisia, in contrast to acute akathisia, evolves after prolonged exposure to the triggering medication and can be a permanent condition. Treatment duration of metoclopramide should be restricted, and awareness of neurological side effects is important.Bite wounds are common in the emergency departments in Denmark. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, more people are adopting pets and the number of hours spent at home with pets are increasing. This will probably result in more bite wounds and therefore, it is as important as ever for emergency doctors to be able to treat bite wounds appropriately. In this review, we summarise the most common types of bite wounds, how to make a thorough physical examination, what to focus on in the anamnesis, and how to treat bite wounds including when to suture and the indications for prophylactic antibiotics.
Hormonal contraception (HC) celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. Thanks to thousands of scientific studies on these products, we now have solid knowledge about the short- and long-term effects and also the adverse effects of different contraceptive types. The aim of this study was to analyse trends in the use of different types of HC through the latest decade in different age groups of Danish women and to study reasons for any changes.
Individual-level HC **** statistics were provided from the National Registry of Medicinal Products. All statistics were stated as defined daily doses per 1,000 women per day. Absolute numbers and distributions among users were calculated.
The overall use of HC was stable in women from 15 to 25 years, decreased among women aged 25-34 years and increased among women aged 35 years or more. On average, an increase from 35% to 39% was recorded. Across all age groups, the use of second-generation combined oral contraceptives (COC) has almost completely replaced the use of third- and fourth-generation pills, and from the age of 20 years of age, the use of COC has decreased contrasting a steep increase in use of the hormone-intrauterine device (IUD). The magnitude of this shift increased with increasing age.
Whereas the overall use of hormonal contraception has increased over the latest decade from 35% to 39% among all women aged 15-49 years, hormone-IUDs have increasingly replaced COCs so that they are now dominating among women aged 30 years or more. These changes are expected to have decreased venous thrombosis and menorrhagic complaints in young women substantially.

Complicated appendicitis increases the risk of post-operative intra-abdominal abscess. Treatment of complicated appendicitis is usually a post-operative course of intravenous antibiotics. A study is needed to confirm the results of retrospective studies showing that a post-operative course of oral antibiotics is not inferior to intravenous antibiotics after laparoscopic surgery for complicated appendicitis.
The Per oral versus Intravenous Postoperative Antibiotics after surgery for complicated appendicitis (PIPA) trial will be a prospective, multicentre, cluster-randomised cluster-crossover non-inferiority study designed to test whether a three-day post-operative course of oral antibiotics is non-inferior to a three-day post-operative course of intravenous antibiotics as standard care after laparoscopic surgery for complicated appendicitis in regards to the risk of post-operative intra-abdominal abscess formation within 30 days. Participating hospitals will either be randomised to a six-month period with an oral antibiotic regime followed by a six-month period with an intravenous antibiotic regime for the post-operative treatment after laparoscopic surgery for complicated appendicitis, or to a six-month period with an intravenous antibiotic regime followed by a six-month period with an oral antibiotic regime for post-operative treatment after laparoscopic surgery for complicated appendicitis.
The primary outcome will be the incidence of intra-abdominal abscess by post-operative day 30.

Loss of workdays is the main societal cost related to shoulder disorders with nine lost workdays per six months on average. The most common shoulder disorder is subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS), but it remains unknown if SIS is also a leading cause of shoulder-related loss of worktime. We aimed to investigate the incidence of workdays lost due to SIS during the six months following a SIS diagnosis in specialised care.
Among 157 consecutive patients diagnosed with SIS in secondary care, 129 (82%) completed a structured six-month follow-up interview. Job status, average working hours and sick leave due to SIS were recorded. Only patients holding a job (n = 58) and patients who lost their job due to SIS (n = 8) were considered to be at risk of losing workdays, leaving 66 patients in the at-risk group. The number of lost workhours due to SIS was calculated and normalised to full-time workdays, and incidences of lost workdays were estimated using Poisson regressions.
In total, 1,781 workdays were lost. The mean number of lost workdays per six months was 27 days (95% confidence interval (CI) 18-40) for patients at risk (n = 66), corresponding to 14 days on average (95% CI 9-21 days) for the entire cohort (n = 129). A total of 33 patients were responsible for all loss of workdays.
We found that an average of 27 workdays (> 5 work weeks) were lost due to SIS during the first six months after the diagnosis in patients who were otherwise fit to work. This is three times higher than the nine days previously reported for shoulder problems in general, indicating that productivity loss in patients diagnosed with SIS is a major concern.

Writing is a particularly demanding activity, which poses unique motivational challenges for students. Despite the wealth of research on the relation between writing motivation and writing performance, little is known about the role of students' writing frequency in writing motivation and writing performance.
We aimed to (1) examine structural relations among two motivational variables (i.e., self-efficacy and attitudes), a behavioural variable (i.e., writing frequency), and writing performance; and (2) inspect whether these relations varied across two text genres (i.e., narrative and opinion texts) and across two educational levels (i.e., students in grades 5-6 and grades 7-8).
Six hundred and five students from grades 5-8 participated in this study.
Students completed self-report scales and wrote narrative and opinion texts. We conducted multiple-group structural equation modeling to analyse the data.
Regarding narrative texts, digital writing frequency was significantly associated with text quality for students in grades 7-8, but this relation was not significant in students from grades 5-6. Both attitudes and self-efficacy for self-regulation made a direct contribution to narrative text quality across educational levels. In addition, attitudes were associated with both literary and digital writing frequency across educational levels. Concerning opinion texts, no significant differences emerged in terms of educational level. Attitudes contributed to both literary and digital writing frequency as well as to opinion text quality across educational levels.
This study underlines the fundamental contribution of motivational variables to students' writing performance. Accordingly, teachers need to adopt motivation-enhancing practices in writing instruction across grade levels.

For this substudy, all patients who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by PCR in March and April 2020 were included. The primary outcome was the incidence of bacterial coinfection. We used logistic regression analysis for associations of procalcitonin, C reactive protein (CRP), ferritin, lymphocyte count and PSI score with a severe disease course, defhe PSI appear to be promising tools in helping physicians identify patients at risk for severe disease course in COVID-19 at presentation to the ED.
Recent research suggests that between 20% and 50% of paediatric head injuries attending our emergency department (ED) could be safely discharged soon after triage, without the need for medical review, using a 'Head Injury Discharge At Triage' tool (HIDAT). We sought to implement this into clinical practice.
Paediatric ED triage staff underwent competency-based assessments for HIDAT with all head injury presentations 1 May to 31 October 2020 included in analysis. We determined which patients were discharged using the tool, which underwent CT of the brain and whether there was a clinically important traumatic brain injury or representation to the ED.

We retrospectively analysed data from a prospectively maintained Japanese database (January 2012 to March 2013). We identified adult patients who had been resuscitated and hospitalised after intrinsic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) (n=2428, age ≥18 years). We validated the sOHCA and sCAHP scores with reference to the original scores in predicting 1-month unfavourable neurological outcomes (cerebral performance categories 3-5) based on the discrimination and calibration measures of area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) and a Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test with a calibration plot, respectively.
In total, 1985/2484 (82%) patients had a 1-month unfavourable neurological outcome.

Inflammatory mediators are transferred from damaged brain tissue to the bloodstream and produce a systemic inflammatory response in peripheral organs, including the cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, renal and endocrine systems. Complications of TBI are associated with its multiple and systemic effects that should be considered in the treatment of TBI patients. Therefore, in this review, an attempt was made to examine the systemic effects of TBI in detail. The aim of this study was to review, systematically, evidence concerning the link between the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism and the rates and severity of non-contact injuries and exercise-induced muscle damage in athletes and individuals enrolled in exercise training programs.
A computerized literature search was performed in the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, and SPORTDiscus, from inception until November 2020. All included studies compared the epidemiological characteristics of non-contact injury between the different genotypes of the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism.
Our search identified 492 records. After the screening of titles, abstracts, and full texts, 13 studies examining the association between the ACTN3 genotypes and the rate and severity of non-contact injury were included in the analysis. These studies were performed in 6 different countries (Spain, Japan, Brazil, China, Republic of Korea, and Italy) and involved a total participant pool of 1093 participants. Of the studies, 2 involved onduced muscle damage.Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and anxiety disorders (ANX) are each highly prevalent and frequently co-occur, resulting in a complex clinical presentation. The existing literature to date has not yet identified how to best treat comorbid AUD/ANX, partially due to limitations in understanding what factors and mechanisms are implicated in their co-occurrence. Physical activity and maximal aerobic fitness are associated with telomere maintenance, yet the molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to identify the influence of a single bout of exercise and long-term exercise training on TERT expression and telomerase activity. A search of human and rodent trials using the PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct and Embase databases was performed. Based on findings from the identified and eligible trials, both a single bout of exercise (n; standardised mean difference [95%CI] 5; SMD 1.19 [0.41-1.97], p = 0.003) and long-term exercise training (10; 0.31 [0.03-0.60], p = 0.03) up-regulates TERT and telomerase activity in non-cancerous somatic cells. As human and rodent studies were included in the meta-analyses both exhibited heterogeneity (I2 = 55-87%, p less then 0.05). Endurance athletes also exhibited increased leukocyte TERT and telomerase activity compared to their inactive counterparts. These findings suggest exercise training as an inexpensive lifestyle factor that increases TERT expression and telomerase activity. Regular exercise training could attenuate telomere attrition through a telomerase-dependent mechanism and ultimately extend health-span and longevity.
The use of a nation-wide, pediatricians online (PO) after-hours telemedicine service has been offered in Israel for more than a decade. We sought to compare PO visits with those to the primary care pediatrician (PCP).
This is a retrospective cross-sectional study using Israel's largest health care provider database. We included children aged 0-18 years using either PO or PCP between 2015-2018. We compared the baseline characteristics, matching by socioeconomic status, chronic illness,and diagnosis, and compared their admission rates,laboratory testing, and medication prescription.
During this study period there were 262,541 PO visits and a random 10% sample of PCP visits which yielded 1,813,103 visits. Users of PO were more likely to have a higher socioeconomic status (43% vs 28.9%), fever (13.3% vs. 4.4%) and less likely to have acute respiratory conditions (8.8% vs. 16.7%). Users of PO had higher rates of emergency department admissions (2.9% vs. 0.4%), hospital admissions (0.9% vs. 0.2%), and lower rates of laboratory testing (3.

This compilation includes the stories of 5 Native American and First Nation elders, in which they share their wisdom, experience, and opinions on Indigenous food systems and health. Each of these elders participated in the Fourth Annual Conference on Native American Nutrition, held in September 2019 at Mystic Lake Center on land of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community in Prior Lake, Minnesota.
In response to the high levels of maternal nutrition in Uttar Pradesh, Alive & Thrive (A&T) aimed to strengthen the delivery of nutrition interventions through the government antenatal care platform, including leveraging ongoing data collection to improve program delivery and reach (registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03378141). The use of data for decision making is critical for supporting intervention planning and providing targeted supervision and support for FLWs. Despite intensive data-collection efforts, the use of data to inform decision making remains limited. Collaboration facilitated data collection and use, but structural barriers such as staff vacancies need to be addressed to improve the implementation of maternal nutrition interventions.
American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) adults have a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and related complications than non-AI/AN adults. As healthy eating is a cornerstone of diabetes self-management, nutrition education plays an important role in diabetes self-management education.
To understand stakeholder perspectives on facilitators and barriers to healthy eating for AI/AN adults with T2D in order to inform the cultural adaptation of an existing diabetes nutrition education curriculum.
Individual interviews were conducted with 9 national content experts in diabetes nutrition education (e.g. registered dietitians, diabetes educators, experts on AI/AN food insecurity) and 10 community-based key informants, including tribal health administrators, nutrition/diabetes educators, Native elders, and tribal leaders. Findings were used to inform the cultural adaptation of a nutrition education program for AI/AN adults with T2D.We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of a multi-sensor, low-power necklace, NeckSense, for automatically and unobtrusively capturing fine-grained information about an individual's eating activity and eating episodes, across an entire waking day in a naturalistic setting. NeckSense fuses and classifies the proximity of the necklace from the chin, the ambient light, the Lean Forward Angle, and the energy signals to determine chewing sequences, a building block of the eating activity. It then clusters the identified chewing sequences to determine eating episodes. We tested NeckSense on 11 participants with and 9 participants without obesity, across two studies, where we collected more than 470 hours of data in a naturalistic setting. Our results demonstrate that NeckSense enables reliable eating detection for individuals with diverse body mass index (BMI) profiles, across an entire waking day, even in free-living environments. Overall, our system achieves an F1-score of 81.6% in detecting eating episodes in an exploratory study. To detail the rationale behind recommendations recently published by the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) outlining best practices for safety of vitreoretinal surgeons and staff while performing vitreoretinal surgery during the coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 pandemic.
The committee for ASRS Best Practices for Retinal Surgery during the COVID-19 Pandemic reviewed existing evidence and information on SARS-CoV-2 transmission, and risk factors during vitreoretinal surgery. Recommendations were based on best available published data, cumulative clinical experiences, and recommendations and policies from other organizations. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to assess the strength of recommendations and confidence in the evidence. These serve as interim recommendations which are routinely updated given gaps of knowledge and lack of high-quality data on this evolving subject.
Relevant existing literature related to methods of transmissicript is intended to serve as a foundation for continued dialogue on best practices.
Educational autopsy (EA) is an innovative technique designed to improve the quality of feedback provided to conference presenters. In response to survey fatigue and suboptimal feedback from online evaluations, this postlecture group debrief was adapted to emergency medicine residency didactics, with a goal of collecting timely, specific, and balanced feedback for presenters. Other aims include encouraging participants to think critically about educational methods and providing presenters with formal feedback for a portfolio or promotion packet. It was hypothesized that EA provides more specific and actionable feedback than traditional online evaluations deployed individually to conference attendees.
The authors analyzed 4 months of evaluations pre- and postimplementation of EA. Rate of completion, presence of comments, and types of comments were compared. Comments were coded as specific, nonspecific, and unrelated/unclear. Specific comments were further categorized as about audiovisual presentation design, speaker presentation style, and educational methods of the session.
This compilation includes the stories of 5 Native American and First Nation elders, in which they share their wisdom, experience, and opinions on Indigenous food systems and health. Each of these elders participated in the Fourth Annual Conference on Native American Nutrition, held in September 2019 at Mystic Lake Center on land of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community in Prior Lake, Minnesota. In response to the high levels of maternal nutrition in Uttar Pradesh, Alive & Thrive (A&T) aimed to strengthen the delivery of nutrition interventions through the government antenatal care platform, including leveraging ongoing data collection to improve program delivery and reach (registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03378141). However, we have a limited understanding of providers' experiences and challenges in collecting and using data for decision making. The aim was to identify barriers and facilitators to the ) collection of data and ) use of data for decision making. In-depth interviews ( =35) were conducted among block-level government staff, frontline worker (FLW) supervisors, and A&T staff in 2 districts in Uttar Pradesh. Systematic coding of verbatim transcripts and detailed summaries were undertaken to elucidate themes related to data collection and use. FLW supervisors ( =103) were surveyed to assess data use experiences. Data were used to understand the reach of materacancies need to be addressed to improve the implementation of maternal nutrition interventions. The use of data for decision making is critical for supporting intervention planning and providing targeted supervision and support for FLWs. Despite intensive data-collection efforts, the use of data to inform decision making remains limited. Collaboration facilitated data collection and use, but structural barriers such as staff vacancies need to be addressed to improve the implementation of maternal nutrition interventions. American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) adults have a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and related complications than non-AI/AN adults. As healthy eating is a cornerstone of diabetes self-management, nutrition education plays an important role in diabetes self-management education. To understand stakeholder perspectives on facilitators and barriers to healthy eating for AI/AN adults with T2D in order to inform the cultural adaptation of an existing diabetes nutrition education curriculum. Individual interviews were conducted with 9 national content experts in diabetes nutrition education (e.g. registered dietitians, diabetes educators, experts on AI/AN food insecurity) and 10 community-based key informants, including tribal health administrators, nutrition/diabetes educators, Native elders, and tribal leaders. Four focus groups were conducted with AI/AN adults with T2D ( =29) and 4 focus groups were conducted with their family members ( =22). Focus groups and community-based key informant rm the cultural adaptation of a nutrition education program for AI/AN adults with T2D. Findings were used to inform the cultural adaptation of a nutrition education program for AI/AN adults with T2D.We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of a multi-sensor, low-power necklace, NeckSense, for automatically and unobtrusively capturing fine-grained information about an individual's eating activity and eating episodes, across an entire waking day in a naturalistic setting. However, curiously, light-sensitive Pickering emulsions are barely studied in the literature and their biocompatibility and/or degradability scarcely addressed. Thus, their development remains a major challenge. As an original strategy, we synthesized light-sensitive nanoparticles based on biocompatible Poly(NitroBenzylAcrylate) grafted dextran (Dex-g-PNBA) to stabilize O/W Pickering emulsions. The produced emulsions were stable in time and could undergo time and space-controlled destabilization under light stimulus. Irradiation time and alkaline pH-control of the aqueous phase were proved to be the actual key drivers of destabilization. As the nanoparticles themselves were photolyzed under light stimulus, possible harmful effects linked to accumulation of nanomaterials should be avoided. In addition to UV light (365 nm), visible light (405 nm) was successfully used for the spatio-temporal destabilization of the emulsions, offering perspectives for life science applications.Marine polysaccharides or oligosaccharides have potential to promote wound healing due to their biocompatibility and physicochemical properties. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Malvern particle size analyzer showed that AGO-AgNPs-OA was spherical or elliptic with average size of about 100 nm. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy showed that AGO-AgNPs stabilized the α-helical structure of OA. AGO-AgNPs-OA showed stronger anti-bacterial activities than AGO-AgNPs, and had good biocompatibility and significant promoting effect on wound healing. In this study, As an eco-friendly and facile method, we prepared monodispersed silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in cellulose-framework through photocatalytic reaction. and we fabricated electrospun fiber scaffolds with excellent antibacterial properties and biocompatibility. UV-irradiation causes the electrical change of the cellulose-framework, thereby converting Ag ions into Ag particles. We applied a three-electrode system to confirm the phenomenon. Through STEM and EDS, it was found that the synthesized AgNPs were monodisperse in the nanofibers, and antibacterial activity was confirmed using gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. In addition, it was suggested that the gradual release of simvastatin contained in the nanofibers and excellent mineralization would be easy to apply to bone regeneration. Therefore, the manufactured composite electrospun fiber mat can be used not only in biomedical fields but also in various applications that need to prevent the accumulation of microorganisms.The direct write printing method has gained popularity in synthesizing scaffolds for tissue engineering. To achieve an excellent printability of scaffolds, a thorough evaluation of rheological properties is required. We report the synthesis, characterization, rheology, and direct-write printing of chitosan - graphene oxide (CH - GO) nanocomposite hydrogels at a varying concentration of GO in 3 and 4 wt% CH polymeric gels. Rheological characterization of CH - GO hydrogels shows that an addition of only 0.5 wt% of GO leads to a substantial increase in storage modulus (G'), viscosity, and yield stress of 3 and 4 wt% of CH hydrogels. A three-interval thixotropy test (3ITT) shows that 3 wt% CH with 0.5 wt% GO hydrogel has 94% recovery of G' after 7 sequential stress cycles and is the best candidate for direct-write printing. Neuronal cell culture on 3 wt% CH with 0.5 wt% hydrogels reveals that GO promotes the differentiation of SH-SY5Y cells.Through hot water extraction, protein removal and chromatographic purification, DWPP-Is was found to be the major polysaccharide present in the stem of D. wardianum. The Mn and Mw of DWPP-Is were 29.0 kDa and 98.6 kDa, respectively. Furthermore, mannose and glucose were found to be the most abundant monosaccharides in DWPP-Is. Their backbones consist of (1 → 4)-β-d-Glcp and O-acetylated (1 → 4)-β-d-Manp, which are similar to the structures of other anti-tumour Dendrobium polysaccharides. Intragastric administration of DWPP-Is on A549 tumour-bearing KM **** (10 mg/mL, 0.2 mL) exhibited similar inhibition ratios to that of erlotinib hydrochloride (2 mg/mL). Moreover, the highest inhibition was observed in P-CK treatment combined with DWPP-Is, reaching an inhibition rate of 23.4%.
