    Results confirmed that the mycelia of R. solani treated with eugenol shrank and became dehydrated, the cytoplasmic wall separated, and the vacuoles and mitochondria decreased or dissolved. Moreover, we found that eugenol downregulated expression of C-4 methyl sterol oxidase, inhibited synthesis of ergosterol, increased membrane permeability and impaired the transportation of amino acids and glucose across the cell membrane. In addition, eugenol decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential and initiated an oxidative stress reaction by increasing reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde, which together with membrane damage contribute to the antifungal activity of eugenol. Meanwhile, eugenol might inhibit R. solani by affecting oxidative phosphorylation and the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA cycle).

    Validity of the 2014 traumatic encephalopathy syndrome (TES) criteria, proposed to diagnose chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in life, has not been assessed.

    A total of 336 consecutive brain donors exposed to repetitive head impacts from contact sports, military service, and/or physical violence were included. Blinded to clinical information, neuropathologists applied National Institute on Neurological Disorders and Stroke/National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering CTE criteria. Blinded to neuropathological information, clinicians interviewed informants and reviewed medical records. An expert panel adjudicated TES diagnoses.

    A total of 309 donors were diagnosed with TES; 244 donors had CTE pathology. TES criteria demonstrated sensitivity and specificity of 0.97 and 0.21, respectively. Cognitive (odds ratio [OR]=3.6; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.2-5.1), but not mood/behavior or motor symptoms, were significantly associated with CTE pathology. Having Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology was significantly associated with reduced TES accuracy (OR=0.27; 95% CI 0.12-0.59).

    Opportunities for cancer survivors' employment can both reflect and perpetuate health inequities, as employment is an important social determinant of health. Socio-economic and geographic disadvantage is associated with greater difficulty finding work, but little is known about work needs of Australian cancer survivors living with disadvantage.

    This study examined survivor and health-care professional (HCP) perspectives on barriers experienced by Australian cancer survivors experiencing disadvantage when attempting to remain at or return to work.

    Focus groups and individual interviews were held with cancer survivors (N=15) and oncology and primary HCPs (N=41), focusing on communities at risk of disadvantage. Participants were asked about employment barriers and facilitators in general and in the context of disadvantage. Themes were identified using framework analysis.

    Geographic and socio-economic disadvantage resulted in specific individual- and system-level barriers. These related to distance from treatment and support services and limited availability and suitability of work for survivors living with geographic disadvantage, and limited availability, security, and flexibility of work and previous unemployment for survivors living with socio-economic disadvantage.

  • Brain metastases are the major cause of adult malignant nervous system tumors. For this part of population, treatment options are limited and the prognosis is poor. In recent years, immunotherapy based on inhibitors of programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) and programmed cell death receptor ligand 1 (PD-L1), have brought innovation to the treatment of malignant tumors. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized the management of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Encouraging results have suggested that ICIs could be active in selected advanced NSCLC brain metastases with driver-negative patients. However, for patients with brain metastases, not only the corresponding clinical data are limited, but also the evaluation of its efficacy lacks a unified standard. This article aims to review the relevant efficacy evaluation standards and their application in clinical researches, compare the similarities and differences, and look forward to future trends.

However, a high percentage of lung cancer patients do not respond to these immunotherpy or their responses are transient, indicating the existence of immune resistance. Emerging evidence suggested that the interactions between cancer cells and immune system were continuous and dynamic. Here, we review how a range of cancer-cell-autonomous characteristics, tumor-microenvironment factors, and host-related influences account for heterogenous responses. Furthermore, with the identification of new targets of immunotherapy and development of immune-based combination therapy, we elucidate the methods might useful to overcome resistance.
    Lung cancer is the highest incidence of cancer in the world, which seriously threatens human health. Early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer is particularly important for the survival of lung cancer patients. Serum tumor markers have been widely used as an important method for early diagnosis of tumor. However, there are few early diagnostic markers for lung cancer. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the expression level of Lipocalin-2 and its clinical significance in serum of patients with lung cancer.

    The serum levels of Lipocalin-2 in 60 lung cancer patients and 63 healthy people were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the relationship between the expression level of Lipocalin-2 and the clinical characteristics of lung cancer was analyzed.

    The expression level of Lipocalin-2 in peripheral blood serum of patients with lung cancer was significantly higher than that of healthy people, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.001). The expressghly expressed in serum of patients with lung cancer, which is related to pathological differentiation, stage and lymph node metastasis. It is expected to become a potential new tumor marker for clinical diagnosis of lung cancer.
    This study was conducted to enhance our understanding of nitrogen (N) metabolism and mammary amino acid (AA) utilization in lactating cows with divergent phenotypes of residual feed intake (RFI).

    Fifty-three multiparous mid-lactation Holstein dairy cows were selected for RFI measurements over a 50-d experimental period. The 26 cows with the most extreme RFI values were classified into the high RFI (n =13) and low RFI (n =13) groups, respectively, for analysis of N metabolism and AA utilization.

    Compared with the high RFI cows, the low RFI animals had lower dry matter intake (P < 0.01) with no difference observed in milk yield between the two groups (P > 0.10). However, higher ratios of milk yield to dry matter intake (P < 0.01) were found in the low RFI cows than in the high RFI cows. The low RFI cows had significant greater ratios of milk protein to metabolizable protein (P = 0.02) and milk protein to crude protein intake than the high RFI cows (P = 0.01). The arterial concentration and mammary uptake of essential AA (P < 0.10), branched-chain AA (P < 0.10), and total AA (P < 0.10) tended to be lower in the low RFI cows. Additionally, the low RFI cows tended to have a lower ratio of AA uptake to milk output for essential AA (P = 0.08), branched-chain AA (P = 0.07) and total AA (P = 0.09) than the high RFI cows.

    In summary, both utilization of metabolizable protein for milk protein and mammary AA utilization are more efficient in cows with lower RFI than in the high RFI cows. Our results provide new insight into the protein metabolic processes (related to N and AA) involved in feed efficiency.

    Chaya (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius) leaf has been found to be an important source of protein, vitamins, minerals, as well as phytonutrients. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of Chaya leaf pellet (CHYP) with various level of protein of concentrate (CP) on rumen fermentation characteristics and nutrient degradability.

    In an in vitro rumen fermentation study the dietary treatments were arranged according to a 3 × 5 factorial arrangement in a Completely randomized design (CRD), consisting of Factor A three levels of CP of concentrate mixtures (14, 16 and 18 %CP, respectively) and Factor B five levels of CHYP supplementation (at 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8% of dry matter substrates).

    The gas production kinetics, fraction (a) and fraction (b) were lower (p<0.05) with an increasing CHYP addition. Additionally, the fraction (a + b) was found to yield a significant interaction (p<0.05) while the fraction (c) was not impacted by CHYP addition. However, in vitro DM degradability (IVDMD) was enhanced and inted CHYP as a promising feed supplement to enhance rumen fermentation and to mitigate methane production. However, in vivo feeding experiments should be subsequently conducted to elucidate the effect of CHYP supplementation on rumen fermentation, as well as ruminant production efficiency.

Overall, we learn that multisectoral involvement of laboratories from non-health sectors, an effective supply chain system with an insight into the promotion of local production of laboratory supplies were critical during the laboratory expansion for COVID-19 testing. The consistent support from WHO and other implementing partners to Member States is needed in building the capacity of laboratories across different diagnostic capabilities in line with International Health Regulations. In conclusion, this study showed that COVID-19 survivors can experience persistent symptoms after recovering from their initial illness. Therefore, there is a need for a long-term follow-up of COVID-19 patients and rehabilitation services for survivors. The median age was 2 days, the sex ratio 1/3 for female. Intestinal occlusions were the most frequent circumstances of diagnosis (50%), low ARMs were the most frequent, diagnosed in 11 patients (45.7%) of which 10 did not have any fistula. The most common associated malformation was intestinal atresia (3 patients). Anoplasty was done using abdominoperineal pull-through associated to anal dilatations in 13 patients (54.1%). Six patients died from unknown etiology and 6 were lost from the follow-up. Concerning the functional outcome, 12 of the 24 patients concerned by the study attended review and 3 of them presented signs of fecal incontinence, 9 of them were continents among whom 8 were diagnosed low ARM and one with high ARM.
    A weak supply chain for laboratory reagents and consumables, differences in the brands of COVID-19 test kits, frequent breakdowns of the PCR machines and inadequate number of laboratory personnel following the adaption of a 24/7 work schedule were some of the challenges experienced during the process of laboratory expansion. Overall, we learn that multisectoral involvement of laboratories from non-health sectors, an effective supply chain system with an insight into the promotion of local production of laboratory supplies were critical during the laboratory expansion for COVID-19 testing. The consistent support from WHO and other implementing partners to Member States is needed in building the capacity of laboratories across different diagnostic capabilities in line with International Health Regulations. This study sought to determine the influence of tuberculosis and its drug treatment on serum biochemical parameters in patients in Nigeria. it was a descriptive observational cohort study on 150 subjects whose blood samples were analyzed for serum albumin, serum sodium, and serum potassium. The subjects were grouped into 3 TB group= 50 new TB subjects not on treatment, F group= 50 TB subjects on treatment for 2/12 or more and C group= 50 non-TB control subjects. These biochemical variables were compared between the 3 groups. male/female ratio was 1 1.5, mean age 37.1±0.92 years, and range 18-65 years. The differences in mean values of serum albumin, calcium and sodium between the three groups were significant (p<0.001), whereas that of serum potassium was not significant (p=0.056). Those patients with new case TB had a significantly lower serum sodium, serum albumin and serum calcium than the control group and those on treatment, p<0.001. There was significant positive correlation between serum albumin and serum calcium (r=0.0.420, p<0.001) as well as serum sodium (r=0.310, p<0.001) in the study population. Similarly, the correlation between serum calcium and serum sodium was positive and significant (r=0.200, p=0.014). We investigated if saline treatment could improve DBBM-C i. handling in vitro and ii. biological performances in a rabbit calvarial model. In vitro, DBBM-C blocks soaked in saline or blood were submitted to compression tests. In vivo, four poly ether ether ketone (PEEK)cylinders were placed on 16 rabbit skulls, filled with DBBM-C soaked in blood or saline for 2-4-8-12 weeks before histomorphometry. DBBM-C blocks were fully hydrated after 30 s in saline when 120 s in blood could not hydrate blocks core. Stiffness gradually decreased 2.5-fold after blood soaking whereas a six-fold decrease was measured after 30 s in saline. In vivo, saline treatment allowed 50% more bone regeneration during the first month when compared to blood soaking. This difference was then no longer visible. New bone morphology and maturity were equivalent in both conditions. DBBM-C saline-soaking facilitated its handling and accelerated bone regeneration of highly qualitative tissues when compared to blood treatment. Eight euthanized rabbits were radiologically and histologically assessed at various intervals after implantation. Bone bridging was complete over pins of both diameters at ~12 weeks, when inserted 1 mm below the surface, but the coverage of the pins inserted at 0 mm varied. Bone was not formed when the pins protruded >1 mm from the bone surface. No inflammation developed around the pins by 25 weeks. Thought leaders representing a variety of industries were surveyed regarding their perspectives on the future of pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical science disciplines, and pharmacy education in seven domains. From 46 completed surveys, top challenges/threats were barriers that limit clinical practice opportunities, excessive supply of pharmacists, and high drug costs. Major changes in the drug distribution system, automation/robotics, and new therapeutic approaches were identified as the top technological disrupters. Key drivers of pharmacy education included the primary care provider shortage, growing use of technology and data, and rising drug costs. The most significant sources of job growth outside of retail and hospital settings were managed care organizations, technology/biotech/pharmaceutical companies, and ambulatory care practices. Needs in the industry included clinical management of complex patients, leadership and management, pharmaceutical scientists, and implementation science. Knowledge gaps were pharmacists not recognizing their value on the health care team, preparation to embrace and lead change, and expertise in data science and analytics. Pharmacy schools will need to address several disruptive trends to future-proof their curricula, including expanding patient management skills, leadership and management training, technology, and data analytics.Red blood cells (RBCs) have been found to synthesize and release both nitric oxide (NO) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), contributing to systemic NO bioavailability. These RBC functions resulted impaired in chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study aimed to evaluate whether predialysis (conservative therapy, CT) and dialysis (peritoneal dialysis, PD; hemodialysis, HD) therapies used during CKD progression may differently affect NO-synthetic pathway in RBCs. Our data demonstrated that compared to PD, although endothelial-NO-synthase activation was similarly increased, HD and CT were associated to cGMP RBCs accumulation, caused by reduced activity of cGMP membrane transporter (MRP4). In parallel, plasma cGMP levels were increased by both CT and HD and they significantly decreased after hemodialysis, suggesting that this might be caused by reduced cGMP renal clearance. As conceivable, compared to healthy subjects, plasma nitrite levels were significantly reduced by HD and CT but not in patients on PD. Additionally, the increased carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) values did not reach the significance exclusively in patients on PD.

  • Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) can rapidly produce interferons and other soluble factors in response to extracellular viruses or virus mimics such as CpG-containing DNA. pDCs can also recognize live cells infected with certain RNA viruses, but the relevance and functional consequences of such recognition remain unclear. We studied the response of primary DCs to the prototypical persistent DNA virus, human cytomegalovirus (CMV). Human pDCs produced high amounts of type I interferon (IFN-I) when incubated with live CMV-infected fibroblasts but not with free CMV; the response involved integrin-mediated adhesion, transfer of DNA-containing virions to pDCs, and the recognition of DNA through TLR9. Compared with transient polyfunctional responses to CpG or free influenza virus, pDC response to CMV-infected cells was long-lasting, dominated by the production of IFN-I and IFN-III, and lacked diversification into functionally distinct populations. Similarly, pDC activation by influenza-infected lung epithelial cells was highly efficient, prolonged, and dominated by interferon production. Prolonged pDC activation by CMV-infected cells facilitated the activation of natural killer cells critical for CMV control. Last, patients with CMV viremia harbored phenotypically activated pDCs and increased circulating IFN-I and IFN-III. Thus, recognition of live infected cells is a mechanism of virus detection by pDCs that elicits a unique antiviral immune response.
    The first visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis cases were reported in Cameroon since more than six decades. However, interest in the disease has decreased over time and data on its epidemiology across the country are scanty. This systematic review aims to update data on what is known and done so far on leishmaniasis in Cameroon.

    PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science will be searched from inception onwards. Grey literature will be identified through Google Scholar searches, dissertation databases and other relevant documents such as report of the National Control Program.     In the context of enhanced recovery after cardiac surgery, surgical techniques for mitral valve surgery have witnessed substantial modifications, from approaching the heart using open approaches with traditional sternotomy to thoracoscopic access via minithoracotomy. After cardiac surgery, acute postoperative pain is frequent and caused by surgical incision and retraction. Perioperative analgesia in cardiac surgery still relies mainly on opioids. Although neuraxial techniques could be a valuable non-opioid-based analgesia regimen, they can be associated with devastating complications in situations with (iatrogenic) coagulation abnormalities. Only two randomised clinical trials describe the erector spinae plane (ESP) block to provide sufficient postoperative analgesia following cardiac surgery with median sternotomy. Regarding postoperative analgesia after cardiac surgery with a minithoracotomy approach, adequately designed trials are still lacking. We, therefore, designed a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to prove the hypothesis that the ESP block reduces opioid consumption in patients undergoing minimally invasive mitral valve surgery (MIMVS).

    Sixty-four patients undergoing MIMVS will be included in this double-blind, prospective, placebo-controlled trial. Patients will be randomised to receive an ESP block with a catheter with either intermittent ropivacaine 0.5% (ropi group) or normal saline 0.9% (placebo group). Both groups will receive patient-controlled intravenous analgesia with morphine following extubation. Primary endpoint is the 24-hour cumulative morphine consumption after extubation. Multiple secondary endpoints will be evaluated.

    The study is approved by the ethics committee of the University Hospitals Leuven, the Clinical Trials Centre of the University Hospitals Leuven and the 'Federaal Agentschap voor Geneesmiddelen en Gezondheidsproducten'. Dissemination of the study results will be via scientific papers.

    The number of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survivors is increasing. However, there remains limited knowledge on the long-term physical and psychological problems suffered by survivors and their relatives. The aims of the DANCAS (DANish cardiac arrest survivorship) survey are to describe the prevalence of physical and psychological problems, identify predictors associated with suffering them and to determine unmet rehabilitation needs in order to make recommendations on the timing and content of future rehabilitation interventions.

    The DANCAS survey has a cross-sectional design involving a survey of OHCA survivors and their relatives. OHCA survivors will be identified through the Danish Cardiac Arrest Registry as having suffered an OHCA between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2019. Each survivor will be asked to identify their closest relative to complete the relatives' survey. Contents of survivor survey EQ-5D-5Level, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Two Simple Questions, Modified Fatigue Imnted at national and international conferences.
    The study will be conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. Surveys and registry-based research studies do not normally require ethical approval in Denmark. This has been confirmed for this study by the Region of Southern Denmark ethics committee (20192000-19). Results of the study will be disseminated via several peer-reviewed publications and will be presented at national and international conferences.

Last, patients with CMV viremia harbored phenotypically activated pDCs and increased circulating IFN-I and IFN-III. Thus, recognition of live infected cells is a mechanism of virus detection by pDCs that elicits a unique antiviral immune response. The first visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis cases were reported in Cameroon since more than six decades. However, interest in the disease has decreased over time and data on its epidemiology across the country are scanty. This systematic review aims to update data on what is known and done so far on leishmaniasis in Cameroon. PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science will be searched from inception onwards. Grey literature will be identified through Google Scholar searches, dissertation databases and other relevant documents such as report of the National Control Program. In the context of enhanced recovery after cardiac surgery, surgical techniques for mitral valve surgery have witnessed substantial modifications, from approaching the heart using open approaches with traditional sternotomy to thoracoscopic access via minithoracotomy. After cardiac surgery, acute postoperative pain is frequent and caused by surgical incision and retraction. Perioperative analgesia in cardiac surgery still relies mainly on opioids. Although neuraxial techniques could be a valuable non-opioid-based analgesia regimen, they can be associated with devastating complications in situations with (iatrogenic) coagulation abnormalities. Only two randomised clinical trials describe the erector spinae plane (ESP) block to provide sufficient postoperative analgesia following cardiac surgery with median sternotomy. Regarding postoperative analgesia after cardiac surgery with a minithoracotomy approach, adequately designed trials are still lacking. We, therefore, designed a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to prove the hypothesis that the ESP block reduces opioid consumption in patients undergoing minimally invasive mitral valve surgery (MIMVS). Sixty-four patients undergoing MIMVS will be included in this double-blind, prospective, placebo-controlled trial. Patients will be randomised to receive an ESP block with a catheter with either intermittent ropivacaine 0.5% (ropi group) or normal saline 0.9% (placebo group). Both groups will receive patient-controlled intravenous analgesia with morphine following extubation. Primary endpoint is the 24-hour cumulative morphine consumption after extubation. Multiple secondary endpoints will be evaluated. The number of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survivors is increasing. However, there remains limited knowledge on the long-term physical and psychological problems suffered by survivors and their relatives. The aims of the DANCAS (DANish cardiac arrest survivorship) survey are to describe the prevalence of physical and psychological problems, identify predictors associated with suffering them and to determine unmet rehabilitation needs in order to make recommendations on the timing and content of future rehabilitation interventions. The DANCAS survey has a cross-sectional design involving a survey of OHCA survivors and their relatives. OHCA survivors will be identified through the Danish Cardiac Arrest Registry as having suffered an OHCA between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2019. Each survivor will be asked to identify their closest relative to complete the relatives' survey. Contents of survivor survey EQ-5D-5Level, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Two Simple Questions, Modified Fatigue Imnted at national and international conferences. The study will be conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. Surveys and registry-based research studies do not normally require ethical approval in Denmark.   • Molecular simulations of the forced unfolding and refolding of biomolecules or molecular complexes allow to gain important kinetic, structural and thermodynamic information about the folding process and the underlying energy landscape. In force probe molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations, one pulls one end of the molecule with a constant velocity in order to induce the relevant conformational transitions. Since the extended configuration of the system has to fit into the simulation box together with the solvent such simulations are very time consuming. Here, we apply a hybrid scheme in which the solute is treated with atomistic resolution and the solvent molecules far away from the solute are described in a coarse-grained manner. We use the adaptive resolution scheme (AdResS) that has very successfully been applied to various examples of equilibrium simulations. We perform FPMD simulations using AdResS on a well studied system, a dimer formed from mechanically interlocked calixarene capsules. The results of the multiscale simulations are compared to all-atom simulations of the identical system and we observe that the size of the region in which atomistic resolution is required depends on the pulling velocity, i.e. the particular non-equilibrium situation. For large pulling velocities a larger all atom region is required. Our results show that multiscale simulations can be applied also in the strong non-equilibrium situations that the system experiences in FPMD simulations.
    Typically, a brain computer interface (BCI) is calibrated using user- and session-specific data because of the individual idiosyncrasies and the non-stationary signal properties of the electroencephalogram (EEG). Therefore, it is normal that BCIs undergo a time-consuming passive training stage that prevents users from directly operating it. In this study, we systematically reduce the training dataset in a step-wise fashion, to ultimately arrive at a calibration-free method for a code-modulated visually evoked potentials (cVEP) based BCI to fully eliminate the tedious training stage.

    In an extensive offline analysis we compare our sophisticated encoding model with a traditional event-related potential (ERP) technique. We calibrate the encoding model in a standard way, with data limited to a single class while generalizing to all others, and without any data. Additionally, we investigate the feasibility of the zero-training cVEP BCI in an online setting.

    By adopting the encoding model, the training data c high communication speeds without calibration while using only a few non-invasive water-based EEG electrodes. This allows to skip the training stage altogether and spent all precious time on direct operation. This minimizes session time and opens up new exciting directions to practical plug-and-play BCI. Fundamentally, these results validate that the adopted neural encoding model compresses data into event-responses without loss of explanatory power as compared to using full ERPs as template.We report point-contact spectroscopy measurements on heavy fermion cousins CeCoIn5, Ce2PdIn8and Ce3PdIn11to systematically study the hybridization betweenfand conduction electrons. Below a temperatureT*, the spectrum of each compound exhibits an evolving Fano-like conductance shape, superimposed on a sloping background, that suggests the development of hybridization between localfand itinerant conduction electrons in the coherent heavy fermion state belowT*. Data on organ doses from NCICT software that is based on Monte Carlo simulations of CT scans for 193 adult phantoms have been used to compute values of SED for CT examinations of the trunk and results compared with corresponding values of SSDE. High DD (95%) chitosan was attributed to higher encapsulation efficiency and stability when crosslinked with polyanion tripolyphosphate. Subsequently, the multi-unit system was fabricated using a pH-sensitive polymer (sodium alginate) as the coating layer to further encapsulate the nanoparticle. Fiber mat with an average diameter of 481±47 nm could significantly decrease the burst release of insulin in acidic condition and release most amount of insulin (>60%) in the simulated intestinal medium. Furthermore, the encapsulated peptide remained in good integrity. This multi-unit carrier provides the better-designed vehicle for intestinal-specific delivery and controlled release of the peptide.

Here, we describe an automatic infrared behavior-monitor (AIBM) system based on an infrared touchscreen frame. Using this, animal positions can be recorded and used for further behavioral analysis by any PC supporting touch events. This system detects animal behavior in real time and gives closed-loop feedback using relatively low computing resources and simple algorithms. The AIBM system automatically records and analyzes multiple types of animal behavior in a highly efficient, unbiased, and low-cost manner.HIV infection continues to be a serious health issue with an alarming global spread, owing to the fact that attempts at developing an effective vaccine or a permanent cure remains futile. So far, the only available treatment for the clinical management of HIV is the combined Anti-Retroviral Therapy (cART), but the long-term cART is associated with metabolic changes, organ damages, and development and transmission of drug resistant HIV strains. Thus, there is a need for the development of one-time curative treatment for HIV infection. The allogeneic transplantation with the Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor cells (HSPCs) having 32 bp deletion in Chemokine receptor 5 gene (CCR5 Δ32) demonstrated successful HIV remission in the Berlin and London patients, and highlighted that transplantation of CCR5 null HSPCs is a promising approach for a long- term HIV remission. The advent of gene editing technologies offers a new choice of generating ex vivo CCR5 ablated allogeneic or autologous HSPCs for stem cell transplantation into HIV patients. Many groups are attempting CCR5 disruption in HSPCs using various gene-editing strategies. At least two such studies, involving CCR5 gene editing in HSPCs have entered the clinical trials. This review aims to outline the strategies taken for CCR5 gene editing and discuss the challenges associated with the development of CCR5 manipulated HSPCs for the gene therapy of HIV infection.Human enteroviruses are the most prevalent causes of aseptic meningitis worldwide. However, despite such predominancy, defining the enteroviral etiology of aseptic meningitis remains a diagnostic dilemma for the clinician in Iran. Therefore, this study was conducted to characterize the prevalence and clinical significance of enteroviral aseptic meningitis as well as the predominant enterovirus serotypes among patients with aseptic meningitis in the South of Iran.Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens were obtained from 73 patients with aseptic meningitis (52.1% males and 47.9% females), ages ranging from 1 month to 88 years. Following the extraction of nucleic acid, the detection of enteroviruses was performed by RT-PCR, targeting the 5' untranslated region of the genome, and sequencing. Enteroviruses were found in 46.6% of samples (34/73). The most predominant serotype was echovirus 30, followed by coxsackievirus B5 and poliovirus type 1 Sabin strain. The enterovirus infections were more prevalent among female patients (58.8%) and those below 5 years of age (52.9%). Although enterovirus infections were observed throughout the year, the infections were more prevalent during autumn with fever as the predominant clinical symptom. The outcomes revealed that enteroviruses are significant causes of aseptic meningitis in the South of Iran, while suspected cases of aseptic meningitis are usually monitored by bacterial culture and biochemical testing of CSF samples. Therefore, the etiology remains unknown in most cases. Molecular detection of viral pathogens should be included as a common approach in the screening of patients with aseptic meningitis to prevent unnecessary treatment and to improve clinical management.A patient presented with an opsoclonus-myoclonus-ataxia syndrome after a 2-week period of fever.     Pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus (SS) varies widely among different ethnic groups. Information regarding the prevalence and significance of SS variants among Hispanic groups is limited. This study aims to describe and analyze pneumatization and septation patterns of the SS in a Hispanic population.

    A total of 160 paranasal sinus computed tomographies were reviewed by a head and neck-specialized radiologist and 2 otolaryngologists.

The KPL genotype identified in this study differed from genotype I in 6 nucleotides and from genotype I-like in 3 nucleotides, respectively, indicating that Group 2 has the capacity to infect a wide range of hosts. This is the first report of the presence of E. bieneusi in an African lion housed in a zoo in the ROK. Further investigation is necessary to study E. bieneusi infection among zoo animals in various regions and to determine the transmission route, in order to control E. bieneusi infection.Giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) are commonly managed in zoos and conservation programs worldwide, but the current understanding of the occurrence and progression of neoplastic disease in this species is limited by the scarcity of published reports. This study collated documented cases of neoplasia on the basis of gross and histologic evaluation of ante- and postmortem samples. In total, 30 giraffes from 22 institutions across the United States were included. Subspecies was not reported in all cases, but those identified included Masai (Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi), Rothschild (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi), and reticulated subspecies (Giraffe camelopardalis reticulata). Thirteen animals died natural deaths, 15 were euthanized, and 2 were alive at the time of this article. A total of 38 tumors were reported and classified as 18 different diagnoses, including leiomyoma (7), adenoma (4), luteoma (4), lymphoma (4), pheochromocytoma (3), squamous cell carcinoma (3), adenocarcinoma (2), ameloblastic fibroma (1), carcinomatosis of undetermined cell lineage (1), cavernous hemangioma (1), cystic granulosa cell tumor (1), dysgerminoma (1), fibrosarcoma (1), leukemia (1), lipoma (1), pituitary nerve sheath tumor (1), rhabdomyosarcoma (1), and teratoma (1). Multiple concurrent neoplastic lesions were documented in six cases. Mesenchymal tumors (18) were the majority of neoplasms. The most prevalent location, regardless of tumor type, was the female reproductive tract (14). Twenty-four neoplastic lesions were incidental findings at necropsy, whereas eight neoplasms were considered to be the primary cause of death.
