We use a molecular phylogeny constructed with five gene fragments from 27 samples to determine that invasive lineages of O. biroi originated in Bangladesh. These lineages may have spread from Bangladesh via the historically significant Bay of Bengal shipping ports. Ooceraea biroi shares multiple features of its biology with other introduced ants, including parthenogenesis, retention of heterozygosity and presence of multiple egg-layers in the colony. Using laboratory rearing and microsatellite markers, we show that colonies collected from disturbed habitat in Bangladesh have these traits in common with colonies from the invasive range. Ancestral populations with sexual reproduction in primary habitats either remain to be discovered or have gone extinct. Our findings advance our understanding of the global spread of the clonal raider ant and highlight a suite of general traits that make certain ants prone to becoming invasive.

  • Ischemic retinopathies represent a major cause of visual impairment and blindness. They include diabetic retinopathy (DR), acute glaucoma, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and central (or branch) retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). These conditions share in common a period of ischemia or reduced blood supply to the retinal tissue that eventually leads to neuronal degeneration. Similarly, acute brain injury from ischemia or trauma leads to neurodegeneration and can have devastating consequences in patients with stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI). In all of these conditions, current treatment strategies are limited by their lack of effectiveness, adverse effects or short time window for administration. Therefore, there is a great need to identify new therapies for acute central nervous system (CNS) injury. In this brief review article, we focus on the pathway of the arginase enzyme as a novel therapeutic target for acute CNS injury. We review the recent work on the role of arginase enzyme and its downstream components in neuroprotection in both retina and brain acute injury models. Delineating the similarities and differences between the role of arginase in the retina and brain neurodegeneration will allow for better understanding of the role of arginase in CNS disorders. This will also facilitate repurposing the arginase pathway as a new therapeutic target in both retina and brain diseases. SREBPs are currently recognized as versatile transcription factors involved in a myriad of cellular processes. Meanwhile, SREBPs have been recognized to mediate lipotoxicity, contributing to the progression of kidney diseases. SREBP1 has been shown to bind to the promoter region of TGFβ, a major pro-fibrotic signaling mechanism in the kidney. Conversely, TGFβ activates SREBP1 transcriptional activity suggesting a positive feedback loop of SREBP1 in TGFβ signaling. Public ChIP-seq data revealed numerous non-lipid transcriptional targets of SREBPs that plausibly play roles in progressive kidney disease and fibrosis. This review provides new insights into SREBP as a mediator of kidney fibrosis via lipid-independent pathways. Isoorientin (Iso) is a flavonoid-like compound known to have antioxidant effects. As oxidative injury plays a vital role in CDDP-induced acute kidney injury (AKI), the effect of Iso on CDDP-induced nephrotoxicity has not yet been researched. We assessed the effects of Iso against CDDP-induced nephrotoxicity in vitro using mTEC cells and further explored the mechanisms underlying CDDP-induced renal dysfunction in vivo in WT and Nrf2-/- ****. The results showed that Iso treatment significantly reduced CDDP-induced nephrotoxicity via attenuating cell damage in vitro and via ameliorating renal injury, as determined by biochemical markers, in ****. The molecular mechanism underlying this protection was also investigated. Iso up-regulated the expression levels of SIRT1 and SIRT6 in vivo and in vitro. In addition, Iso activated Nrf2 translocation and the expression levels of its downstream antioxidant enzymes, such as HO-1 and NQO1, whereas it inhibited the expression level of NOX4, thus decreasing oxidative stress. Notably, the protective effects of Iso observed in WT **** were completely abolished in Nrf2-/- ****. Collectively, these data indicate that the protective effect of Iso on CDDP-induced nephrotoxicity by SIRT1- and SIRT6-mediated Nrf2 activation regulates oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis. Four Epimedii Herba-derived flavonoid compounds, namely, limonianin, epimedokoreanin B, icaritin, and desmethylicaritin, inhibited CD163 expression and interleukin (IL)-10 production, which are known M2 markers, suggesting that these compounds inhibit M2 polarization. This study aims to better understand the biological function of Plasmodium GST, assess its potential as a drug target, and identify novel antiplasmodial compounds using the rodent model P. berghei. By using reverse genetics, we provided evidence that GST is essential for survival of P. berghei intra-erythrocytic stages and is a valid target for drug development. A structural model of the P. berghei glutathione S-transferase (PbGST) protein was generated and used in a structure-based screening of 900,000 compounds from the ChemBridge Hit2Lead library. Forty compounds were identified as potential inhibitors and analyzed in parasite in vitro drug susceptibility assays. One compound, CB-27, exhibited antiplasmodial activity with an EC50 of 0.5 μM toward P.

  • Therapists, judges, law enforcement, and students often believe in the existence of automatic and unconscious repression. Such a belief can be perilous as it might lead therapists to suggestively search for repressed memories leading to false memories. Recovering therapy-induced false memories of criminal acts can have serious consequences. Here, we tested whether erroneous beliefs in repressed memories can be corrected. Surveying two cohorts of Forensic and Legal Psychology Master's students, we examined whether education about the science of (eyewitness) memory can correct erroneous beliefs in repressed memories. Students assessed memory statements before taking a course on eyewitness memory, six weeks after the course exam, and 18 or 6 months later, respectively (Ns = 33-74 per cohort and measurement). As expected, students in both cohorts on average initially strongly agreed with the statement that memories of traumatic events can be unconsciously blocked, but strongly disagreed with the statement after the course. Belief-corrections also persisted after the longer delay. These findings show that educating people about the science of (eyewitness) memory can be effective in correcting false and controversial memory beliefs in general and the existence of repressed memories in specific.Guidance on contact tracing in Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) is limited. CT contacts data over 12 months (1 December 2018-29 November 2019) at a UK sexual health clinic were analysed to determine the appropriateness of the currently recommended six-month 'look-****' interval. Age and sex of CT contacts were associated with clinical outcomes. Subgroups of 100 CT positive/negative contacts (each N = 100) were randomly selected. The relationship between time since sexual intercourse with the index case (Last Sexual Intercourse; LSI) and CT positivity was examined; suitability of varying look-**** intervals was explored. The incidence of Enterobacteriales increased over time after LT (p = 0.048) and was similar to that in the non-transplant group after one year of LT. Bile micro-organisms in LT recipients, resistant to most antibiotic agents, especially soon after LT changed over time and became similar to those in the non-transplant group after one year of LT.
    Therapists, judges, law enforcement, and students often believe in the existence of automatic and unconscious repression. Such a belief can be perilous as it might lead therapists to suggestively search for repressed memories leading to false memories. Recovering therapy-induced false memories of criminal acts can have serious consequences. Here, we tested whether erroneous beliefs in repressed memories can be corrected. Surveying two cohorts of Forensic and Legal Psychology Master's students, we examined whether education about the science of (eyewitness) memory can correct erroneous beliefs in repressed memories. Students assessed memory statements before taking a course on eyewitness memory, six weeks after the course exam, and 18 or 6 months later, respectively (Ns = 33-74 per cohort and measurement). As expected, students in both cohorts on average initially strongly agreed with the statement that memories of traumatic events can be unconsciously blocked, but strongly disagreed with the statement after the course. Belief-corrections also persisted after the longer delay. These findings show that educating people about the science of (eyewitness) memory can be effective in correcting false and controversial memory beliefs in general and the existence of repressed memories in specific.Guidance on contact tracing in Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) is limited.   • Our findings reveal that UC-EVs are of high translational value in anti-aging intervention.Because tobacco is a potent carcinogen, secondary causes of lung cancer are often diminished in perceived importance. To assess the extent of inherited susceptibility to small cell lung cancer (SCLC), the most lethal type of lung cancer, we sequenced germline exomes of 87 patients (77 SCLC and 10 extrapulmonary small cell) and considered 607 genes, discovering 42 deleterious variants in 35 cancer-predisposition genes among 43.7% of patients. These findings were validated in an independent cohort of 79 patients with SCLC. Loss of heterozygosity was observed in 3 of 14 (21.4%) tumors. Identification of variants influenced medical management and family member testing in nine (10.3%) patients. Unselected patients with SCLC were more likely to carry germline RAD51 paralog D (RAD51D), checkpoint kinase 1 (CHEK1), breast cancer 2 (BRCA2), and mutY DNA glycosylase (MUTYH) pathogenic variants than healthy controls. Germline genotype was significantly associated with the likelihood of a first-degree relative with cancer or lung cancer (odds ratio 1.82, P = 0.008; and 2.60, P = 0.028), and longer recurrence-free survival after platinum-based chemotherapy (P = 0.002), independent of known prognostic factors. Treatment of a patient with relapsed SCLC and germline pathogenic mutation of BRCA1 interacting protein C-terminal helicase 1 (BRIP1), a homologous recombination-related gene, using agents synthetically lethal with homologous recombination deficiency, resulted in a notable disease response. OX40 signaling reduced CAR-T cell apoptosis through up-regulation of genes encoding Bcl-2 family members and enhanced proliferation through increased activation of the NF-κB (nuclear factor κB), MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase), and PI3K-AKT (phosphoinositide 3-kinase to the kinase AKT) pathways. We identified similar features in a mouse model of severe SMA, in which impaired radial growth and Schwann cell ensheathment of motor axons began during embryogenesis and resulted in reduced acquisition of myelinated axons that impeded motor axon function neonatally. Axons that failed to ensheath degenerated rapidly postnatally, specifically releasing neurofilament light chain protein into the blood. Genetic restoration of survival motor neuron protein (SMN) expression in mouse motor neurons, but not in Schwann cells or muscle, improved SMA motor axon development and maintenance. Treatment with small-molecule SMN2 splice modifiers beginning immediately after birth in **** increased radial growth of the already myelinated axons, but in utero treatment was required to restore axonal growth and associated maturation, prevent subsequent neonatal axon degeneration, and enhance motor axon function. To bring deep learning risk models to clinical practice, we need to further refine their accuracy, validate them across diverse populations, and demonstrate their potential to improve clinical workflows. We developed Mirai, a mammography-based deep learning model designed to predict risk at multiple timepoints, leverage potentially missing risk factor information, and produce predictions that are consistent across mammography machines. Mirai was trained on a large dataset from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in the United States and tested on held-out test sets from MGH, Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden, and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (CGMH) in Taiwan, obtaining C-indices of 0.76 (95% confidence interval, 0.74 to 0.80), 0.81 (0.79 to 0.82), and 0.79 (0.79 to 0.83), respectively.   • The aim of this study was to evaluate the mid-term results of surgically treated scaphoid fractures since we were concerned that good results might deteriorate over time due to osteoarthritis or functional impairment. Thirty-three out of 121 surgically treated patients (isolated scaphoid fractures n = 23; scaphoid fractures with concomitant injuries n = 10) were evaluated retrospectively (47-138 months). Five patients (4%) had a non-union after internal fixation and were excluded because of additional treatment. The remaining 83 patients were not available for a follow-up examination. Patients with an isolated scaphoid fracture had a mean extension-flexion of 68°-0°-64°, a radial-ulnar deviation of 27°-0°-41° and a grip strength of 39 kg (corresponding to 87-98% of the uninjured contralateral wrist), while patients with concomitant injuries had a mean extension-flexion of 60°-0°-44°, radial-ulnar deviation of 22°-0°-38° and a grip strength of 42 kg (corresponding to 73-98% of the uninjured contralateral wrist). The Michigan Hand Questionnaire score was 85 and 75 and the Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation score was 8 and 21, respectively. Fifteen patients had radiological signs of radiocarpal osteoarthritis with a significantly higher occurrence in those who had concomitant injuries compared to those with isolated scaphoid fractures (p  less then  0.01). An electronic search of the literature was conducted by using MEDLINE, ISI Web of Science - Web of Science Core Collection, and Cochrane Library databases. Eligible studies had to focus on the use of at least one of 15 antidepressants commonly used in MDD (i.e., agomelatine, bupropion, citalopram, desvenlafaxine, duloxetine, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, levomilnacipran, mirtazapine, paroxetine, reboxetine, sertraline, venlafaxine, and vortioxetine) and report data on treatment-emergent gastrointestinal SEs (i.e. nausea/vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, anorexia, increased appetite and dry mouth) within 12 weeks of treatment.     The aim of this study was to evaluate the mid-term results of surgically treated scaphoid fractures since we were concerned that good results might deteriorate over time due to osteoarthritis or functional impairment. Thirty-three out of 121 surgically treated patients (isolated scaphoid fractures n = 23; scaphoid fractures with concomitant injuries n = 10) were evaluated retrospectively (47-138 months). Five patients (4%) had a non-union after internal fixation and were excluded because of additional treatment. The remaining 83 patients were not available for a follow-up examination. Patients with an isolated scaphoid fracture had a mean extension-flexion of 68°-0°-64°, a radial-ulnar deviation of 27°-0°-41° and a grip strength of 39 kg (corresponding to 87-98% of the uninjured contralateral wrist), while patients with concomitant injuries had a mean extension-flexion of 60°-0°-44°, radial-ulnar deviation of 22°-0°-38° and a grip strength of 42 kg (corresponding to 73-98% of the uninjured contralateral wrist). The Michigan Hand Questionnaire score was 85 and 75 and the Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation score was 8 and 21, respectively. Fifteen patients had radiological signs of radiocarpal osteoarthritis with a significantly higher occurrence in those who had concomitant injuries compared to those with isolated scaphoid fractures (p  less then  0.01).     In couple therapy clients often suffer from a blend of individual psychiatric symptoms as well as severe relational distress. However, research is inconclusive on whether relational change predicts symptom change or vice versa. Because answers to this question could have important clinical implications on what to focus on in couple therapy at which time in treatment, more research is recommended.

    In this study, data collected before every therapy session were used to test whether changes in relational functioning predicted symptom functioning or vice versa. The study used a multilevel modelling approach, and the variables of interest were disaggregated into within- and between-person effects.

    The results indicated that if an individual improved more than expected on relational functioning, this predicted more improvement than expected on individual symptoms. No significant reciprocal relationship was found between these variables.

    The clinical implication is discussed, suggesting that an emphasis on relational improvement seems to be an important mechanism during couple therapy that may facilitate the change on individual symptoms in the long run.

The current study examined client and therapist assessments of therapeutic alliance longitudinally and sought to determine whether insight and severity of symptoms moderated the degree to which therapist and client assessments were in agreement with one another. Forty-five participants diagnosed with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder and their therapists were administered a therapeutic alliance questionnaire (Working Alliance Inventory-Short Form) monthly for 6 months. Baseline symptoms were assessed using the PANSS. Results did not produce evidence that insight into illness moderated the relationship between agreement on the therapeutic alliance. However, symptoms of emotional discomfort at baseline predicted differences in agreement between clients and therapists on the relationship aspect of therapeutic alliance over the course of therapy.     Timely viral load (VL) testing is critical in the care of pregnant women living with HIV and receiving anti-retroviral therapy (ART). There is paucity of data regarding the Time to First Viral Load (TFVL) testing in resource-limited settings.

    We extracted clinical and VL test data from records of a cohort of ART-naïve pregnant women living with HIV who initiated Option B + and were retained in care between 01 Jan 2015 and 31 Dec 2015. The data were verified against laboratory VL registers. TFVL (in months) was calculated based on the time difference between the date of ART initiation and FVL test. Descriptive and Cox regression analyses of data up to 30 Sep 2017 (33 months later) were done.

    Of the 622 records retrieved, 424 women were retained in care. Of 424 women retained in care, 182/424 (43%) had at least one VL result post ART initiation while 242/424 (57%) had no VL performed. Only 30/182 (16.5%) had a second VL. At six, nine, and twelve months, only 8/424 (1.9%), 47/424 (11.1%), and 94/424 (22.2%) had VL testing performed respectively post ART initiation. The median TFVL testing was 12.7 months (95 CI 11.6-13.7) post ART initiation. Across the five clinics, patient factors (age, gravidity, gestational age, marital status, and adherence at 12 months) were not significant predictors.

    A dismal 1.9% rate of achieving WHO-recommended TFVL testing and a median TFVL testing of twelve months post ART initiation were observed.     Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is a disease caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that emerged in China in late 2019. The rapid viral spread has made the disease a public health emergency of worldwide concern. The gold standard for diagnosing SARS-CoV-2 is reverse transcription followed by qualitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR); however, the role of viral load quantification has not been thoroughly investigated yet.

    The aim of this study was to develop a high-precision quantitative one-step RT-qPCR reaction using the association of the viral target and the human target in the same reaction.

    The assay standardization involved the absolute quantification method, with serial dilutions of a plasmid with the N gene in a biological matrix to build a standard curve.

    The results demonstrated the possibility of quantifying as few as 2.5 copies/reaction and an analysis of 244 patients with known results selected by cross-section that revealed 100% agreement with a qualitative RT-qPCR assay registered by Anvisa.     Limited literature exists on Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) findings in COVID-19 patients with neurological symptoms. In this review, we conducted a descriptive analysis of CSF findings in patients with COVID-19 to understand prognosis and explore therapeutic options.

    We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases using the keywords "SARS-CoV-2 in cerebrospinal fluid" and "SARS-CoV-2 and CNS Complications"" for reports of CSF findings in COVID-19 related neurological manifestations. Descriptive analyses were conducted to observe the CSF protein and cell counts based on age, gender, severity, fatality of COVID-19, and whether central (CNS) or peripheral nervous system (PNS) was associated.

We extracted clinical and VL test data from records of a cohort of ART-naïve pregnant women living with HIV who initiated Option B + and were retained in care between 01 Jan 2015 and 31 Dec 2015. The data were verified against laboratory VL registers. TFVL (in months) was calculated based on the time difference between the date of ART initiation and FVL test. Descriptive and Cox regression analyses of data up to 30 Sep 2017 (33 months later) were done. Of the 622 records retrieved, 424 women were retained in care. Of 424 women retained in care, 182/424 (43%) had at least one VL result post ART initiation while 242/424 (57%) had no VL performed. Only 30/182 (16.5%) had a second VL. At six, nine, and twelve months, only 8/424 (1.9%), 47/424 (11.1%), and 94/424 (22.2%) had VL testing performed respectively post ART initiation. The median TFVL testing was 12.7 months (95 CI 11.6-13.7) post ART initiation. Across the five clinics, patient factors (age, gravidity, gestational age, marital status, and adherence at 12 months) were not significant predictors. A dismal 1.9% rate of achieving WHO-recommended TFVL testing and a median TFVL testing of twelve months post ART initiation were observed. The non-association of patient factors to these observations may suggest a serious need to review health system factors likely associated with these observations and their effective interventions. Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is a disease caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that emerged in China in late 2019. The rapid viral spread has made the disease a public health emergency of worldwide concern. The gold standard for diagnosing SARS-CoV-2 is reverse transcription followed by qualitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR); however, the role of viral load quantification has not been thoroughly investigated yet. The aim of this study was to develop a high-precision quantitative one-step RT-qPCR reaction using the association of the viral target and the human target in the same reaction. The assay standardization involved the absolute quantification method, with serial dilutions of a plasmid with the N gene in a biological matrix to build a standard curve. The results demonstrated the possibility of quantifying as few as 2.5 copies/reaction and an analysis of 244 patients with known results selected by cross-section that revealed 100% agreement with a qualitative RT-qPCR assay registered by Anvisa. In this population, it was possible to quantify patients with between 2.59 and 3.5 × 10 copies per reaction and negative patients continued to indicate the same result. In this review, we conducted a descriptive analysis of CSF findings in patients with COVID-19 to understand prognosis and explore therapeutic options. We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases using the keywords "SARS-CoV-2 in cerebrospinal fluid" and "SARS-CoV-2 and CNS Complications"" for reports of CSF findings in COVID-19 related neurological manifestations. Descriptive analyses were conducted to observe the CSF protein and cell counts based on age, gender, severity, fatality of COVID-19, and whether central (CNS) or peripheral nervous system (PNS) was associated. A total of 113 patients were identified from 67 studies. Of these, 7 patients (6.2%) were fatal COVID-19 cases and 35 patients (31%) were considered severe COVID-19 cases. CSF protein was elevated in 100% (7/7) of the fatal cases with an average of 61.28 mg/dl and in 65.0% (52/80) in non-fatal cases with an average 56.

    Mentoring has been identified as an important method of supporting newly credentialed athletic trainers (ATs) during their transition to practice. Gaining a better understanding of this relationship could provide valuable insights that may assist employers and professional programs in developing a plan to better facilitate the transition.

    To examine which aspects of the mentoring relationship provided the most benefit during transition to practice of newly certified ATs.

    In this study, an end-to-end machine learning model is presented for detection of epileptic seizure using the pretrained deep two-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) and the concept of transfer learning. The EEG signal is converted directly into visual data with a spectrogram and used directly as input data.

    We aimed to determine knowledge of stroke risk factors and signs in an urban population of northern Benin.

    A door-to-door purposeful sampling survey was conducted in resident population (age ≥15 years) of the district of Titirou in the city of Parakou (N = 255,478) in Benin between March 15 and July 15, 2016. In-person interviews were conducted with data collection on structured questionnaires with close and open questions, according to standard definitions. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess predictors of good knowledge, defined by provision of a correct response in pre-defined set of questions on stroke risk factors and warning signs.

    Of 4,671 participants (mean age 27.7 ± 12.9 years; females 50.6%), only 404 (8.6%) knew at least 1 stroke risk factor. Knowledge level of stroke risk factors (odds ratio, 95% confidence interval) was related to age (1.37, 1.27-1.48), level of education (2.54, 1.73-3.72), and family history of stroke (3.01, 2.08-4.26). Only 230 (4.9%) were able to cite at least 1 stroke symptom, and this knowledge was great with increasing age (1.04, 1.02-1.06), family (3.63, 2.41-5.49) and personal history of stroke (3.71, 1.86-7.42), and high level of education (4.35, 2.68-7.07).

Many taxa in the lemur genus Lepilemur remain understudied, and basic population statistics are often dated, incomplete, or absent. Hubbard's sportive lemur (Lepilemur hubbardorum) is known only from the Zombitse-Vohibasia National Park region in southwestern Madagascar. It is listed as Endangered by the IUCN owing to its fragmented, declining habitat and limited geographic range. However, this classification has not been confirmed through systematic population estimates. To address this issue, we undertook line transect surveys in the Zombitse parcel of the National Park. We applied geospatial analyses and data to quantify forest area as a proxy for L. hubbardorumhabitat. We recorded a total of 234 L. hubbardorum sightings over 18 survey nights, representing 47.2 km of survey effort. Our surveys revealed population densities of 145.6 L. hubbardorum individuals per km2 (95% CI 97.2-218.1), for an extrapolated abundance estimate of ca. 16,500-18,000 L. hubbardorum individuals across the protected forests of the Zombitse parcel. This abundance estimate should be considered provisional, however, because our restricted sampling area did not include the more remote regions of the National Park where habitat disturbance and hunting practices have likely contributed to localized population declines.

    Patients who were diagnosed with LVO-induced AIS in the anterior circulation but had a failed intra-arterial thrombectomy (IAT) or were not tried due to IAT contraindications were prospectively enrolled. Timely urgent STA-MCA bypass surgery was performed if they showed perfusion-diffusion mismatch or symptom-diffusion mismatch in the acute phase of disease. This abundance estimate should be considered provisional, however, because our restricted sampling area did not include the more remote regions of the National Park where habitat disturbance and hunting practices have likely contributed to localized population declines. Clinical outcome in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) caused by large vessel occlusion (LVO) is not satisfactory if reperfusion treatment fails or is not tried. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of urgent superficial temporal-to-middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) bypass surgery in selected patients. Patients who were diagnosed with LVO-induced AIS in the anterior circulation but had a failed intra-arterial thrombectomy (IAT) or were not tried due to IAT contraindications were prospectively enrolled. Timely urgent STA-MCA bypass surgery was performed if they showed perfusion-diffusion mismatch or symptom-diffusion mismatch in the acute phase of disease. Clinical and radiological data of these patients were assessed to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of urgent bypass procedures. A pooled analysis of published data on urgent bypass surgery in acute stroke patients was conducted and analyzed. In 18 patients who underwent timely bypass, the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score improved from 12.

This device is digitally controlled with a BLE-incorporated micro-controller characterized by its small size and low power consumption, providing long-life battery. The proposed system consists of two main parts first, the BLE moisture device including the moisture content measurement and wireless capability (BLE); second, the cloud-based monitoring platform, providing remote visualization and control for all the sensor nodes of the network. The complete infrastructure shows how multiple nodes can read and transmit moisture content of timber in buildings using small and unattended devices, with data saved in a central database and monitored by multiple commercial devices such as PC, smartphone, tablet, etc. The proposed system is innovative, scalable and low cost, and it can be deployed in wooden buildings and the wood industry, providing a practical solution that will help to avoid rot and other damaging effects caused by the moisture content.An electronic biosensor for odors was assembled by immobilizing the silk moth Bombyx mori pheromone binding protein (BmorPBP1) on a reduced graphene oxide surface of a field-effect transistor. At physiological pH, the sensor detects the B. mori pheromones, bombykol and bombykal, with good affinity and specificity. Among the other odorants tested, only eugenol elicited a strong signal, while terpenoids and other odorants (linalool, geraniol, isoamyl acetate, and 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine) produced only very weak responses. Parallel binding assays were performed with the same protein and the same ligands, using the common fluorescence approach adopted for similar proteins. The results are in good agreement with the sensor's responses bombykol and bombykal, together with eugenol, proved to be strong ligands, while the other compounds showed only poor affinity. When tested at pH 4, the protein failed to bind bombykol both in solution and when immobilized on the sensor. This result further indicates that the BmorPBP1 retains its full activity when immobilized on a surface, including the conformational change observed in acidic conditions. The proposed V-DC-PCF PBS has the ultra-short SL, ultra-wide SB, and ultra-low IL, so it is expected to have important applications in the laser, sensing, and dense wavelength division multiplexing systems.
    Stemless shoulder arthroplasty (SSA) is used to anatomically reconstruct proximal humerus geometry and preserve proximal humerus bone stock. The current literature lacks 3D-analysis of pre- and postoperative proximal humeral anatomy after SSA. The aim of this study was to prospectively analyze the humeral head anatomy using a computer-assisted topography mapping technique after SSA in relation to the preoperative status and the contralateral (not affected) side.

    Twenty-nine patients (mean age 63.5 ± 11.7 years) affected by primary shoulder osteoarthritis and treated with SSA were included. Preoperative and postoperative CT scans of the affected and contralateral sites were analyzed regarding joint geometry. Clinical outcome was assessed by Constant and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score shortly before and one year after surgery.

    Clinical outcome improved significantly. No correlation between clinical outcome and the evaluated anatomical parameters was found. There was a significant decrease of the humeral head height (
    < 0.01) and radius (
    = 0.03) in the preoperative versus the postoperative joint geometry. The comparison to the contralateral site showed also a significant decrease of the humeral head height (
    < 0.01). All other parameters showed no significant differences.

Exosomes originate from the multivesicular division of cells and have high therapeutic potential, yet neither self-replicate nor cause auto-immune reactions to the host. To maintain their biological activity and allow a controlled release, these paracrine factors can be encapsulated in biomaterials. Among the different types of biomaterials in which exosome infusion is exploited, hydrogels have proven to be the most user-friendly, economical, and accessible material. In this paper, we highlight the importance of **** and ****derived exosomes in tissue engineering and the different biomaterial strategies used in fabricating exosome-based biomaterials, to facilitate hard and soft tissue engineering.
