  • In conclusion, VE1 IHC is a reliable method for detecting BRAFV600E mutation in PTC specimens.This study aimed to evaluate whether computed tomography (CT)-based muscle measurement predicts distant failure in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC). Data from 278 patients with LACC who underwent chemoradiation therapy (CCRT) between 2004 and 2017 were analysed. The addition of muscle change to clinical models, including International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage, lymph nodes, pathology, and squamous cell carcinoma-antigen, achieved higher C-indices (0.824 vs. 0.756; p less then 0.001). Models including muscle change had superior C-indices than those including weight change (0.824 vs. 0.758; p less then 0.001). The area under the curve for predicting 3-year DRFS was the highest for the muscle-loss model (0.802, muscle-loss model; 0.635, clinical model; and 0.646, weight-loss model). Our study demonstrated that muscle loss after CCRT was independently associated with worse DRFS and that integrating muscle loss into models including classical prognostic factors improved the prediction of distant failure.In this study, functional fitness is defined as the level of independence and self-sufficiency of an elderly person, which facilitates leading an independent life, without the need for assistance from other people. The aim of this research was to find the factors differentiating the level of functional fitness of older adults. It involved 509 people divided into a group of people involved in regular physical activity and an inactive group. The Fullerton Functional Fitness Test was used to measure the level of physical fitness, and anthropometric measurements (body weight and height) were also performed. The level of functional fitness of Polish seniors was compared with the American standards established by R. E. Rikli and C. J. Jones. The results of our research confirm a higher level of functional fitness in active older adults, both women and men. In this group, BMI-(Body Mass Index is a measure of body fat based on height and weight) showed a greater correlation with shoulder girdle and **** muscles strength, complex coordination, balance, agility, and endurance in women than in men. In this study, germination conditions were optimized in barley grains with the aim to produce flours with high nutritional and biofunctional potential using response surface methodology (RSM). The impact of germination time (0.8-6 days) and temperature (12-20 °C) on barley quality was studied. Non-germinated barley was used as the control. The content of vitamins B1, B2 and C, and proteins increased notably after germination, especially at longer times, while levels of fat, carbohydrates, fibre, and b-glucan were reduced. The resolution of neuroinflammation is a process that allows for inflamed tissues to return to homeostasis. In this process the important players are represented by lipid mediators. Among the naturally occurring lipid signaling molecules, a prominent role is played by the N-acylethanolamines, namely N-arachidonoylethanolamine and its congener N-palmitoylethanolamine, which is also named palmitoylethanolamide or PEA. PEA possesses a powerful neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory power but has no antioxidant effects per se. For this reason, its co-ultramicronization with the flavonoid luteolin is more efficacious than either molecule alone. Inhibiting or modulating the enzymatic breakdown of PEA represents a complementary therapeutic approach to treating neuroinflammation. The aim of this review is to discuss the role of ultramicronized PEA and co-ultramicronized PEA with luteolin in several neurological diseases using preclinical and clinical approaches.

  • Small cerebral vascular disease (SCeVD) demonstrated by white matter hyperintensity (WMH) on MRI contributes to the development of dementia in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but it has not been possible to correlate onset, severity, or protein components of SCeVD with characteristics of WMH in living patients. Plasma endothelial-derived exosomes (EDEs) were enriched by two-step immunoabsorption from four groups of participants with no clinical evidence of cerebrovascular disease cognitively normal (CN) without WMH (CN without SCeVD, n = 20), CN with SCeVD (n = 22), preclinical AD (pAD) + mild cognitive impairment (MCI) without SCeVD (pAD/MCI without SCeVD, n = 22), and pAD/MCI with SCeVD (n = 16) for ELISA quantification of cargo proteins. Exosome marker CD81-normalized EDE levels of the cerebrovascular-selective biomarkers large neutral amino acid transporter 1 (LAT-1), glucose transporter type 1 (Glut-1), and permeability-glycoprotein (p-GP, ABCB1) were similarly significantly higher in the CN with SCeVD and pAD/MCI with SCeVD groups than their corresponding control groups without SCeVD. CD81-normalized EDE levels of Aβ40 and Aβ42 were significantly higher in the pAD/MCI with SCeVD group but not in the CN with SCeVD group relative to controls without SCeVD. Levels of normal cellular prion protein (PrPc), a receptor for amyloid peptides, and phospho-181T-tau were higher in both CN and pAD/MCI with SCeVD groups than in the corresponding controls. This case-control study was aimed to evaluate the association between the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3 gene rs591058 C/T polymorphism and LDH risk in a southern Chinese population. METHODS A total of 231 LDH patients and 312 healthy controls were recruited in this study. Genotyping was analyzed using a standard polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). RESULTS It was observed that TT genotype or T allele carriers of the MMP-3 gene rs591058 C/T polymorphism was more likely associated with an increased risk for LDH. Subgroup analyses showed the following characteristics increased the risk for LDH female sex; cigarette smoking; and alcohol consumption. Furthermore, individuals with high whole body vibration, bending/twisting, and lifting were associated with an increased risk for LDH. CONCLUSION Taken together, these data indicated that the MMP-3 gene rs591058 C/T polymorphism was associated with an increased risk for LDH. The MMP-3 gene rs591058 C/T polymorphism might serve as a clinical indicator and marker for LDH risk in the Chinese population. © 2020 The Authors. The intracellular protozoan parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, is one pathogen that infects the brain and can cause encephalitis and seizures. Persistent infection by this parasite is also associated with behavioral alterations and an increased risk for developing psychiatric illness, including schizophrenia. Current evidence from studies in humans and mouse models suggest that both seizures and schizophrenia result from a loss or dysfunction of inhibitory synapses. In line with this, we recently reported that persistent T. gondii infection alters the distribution of glutamic acid decarboxylase 67 (GAD67), an enzyme that catalyzes GABA synthesis in inhibitory synapses. These changes could reflect a redistribution of presynaptic machinery in inhibitory neurons or a loss of inhibitory nerve terminals. To directly assess the latter possibility, we employed serial block face scanning electron microscopy (SBFSEM) and quantified inhibitory perisomatic synapses in neocortex and hippocampus following parasitic infection. Not only did persistent infection lead to a significant loss of perisomatic synapses, it induced the ensheathment of neuronal somata by myeloid-derived cells. Immunohistochemical, genetic, and ultrastructural analyses revealed that these myeloid-derived cells included activated microglia. Finally, ultrastructural analysis identified myeloid-derived cells enveloping perisomatic nerve terminals, suggesting they may actively displace or phagocytose synaptic elements. Thus, these results suggest that activated microglia contribute to perisomatic inhibitory synapse loss following parasitic infection and offer a novel mechanism as to how persistent T. gondii infection may contribute to both seizures and psychiatric illness. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.INTRODUCTION Dental implantology is an increasingly contemporary integral and important component of the practice of dentistry. This study assessed the level of teaching of dental implantology to dental undergraduates in Nigeria. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a cross-sectional descriptive study involving the use of a self-administered questionnaire consisting of five sections developed for this study. It was sent via e-mail to a dental faculty in charge of and involved in the teaching of dental implantology in all 10 dental schools (five old generation and five new generation) in Nigeria. RESULTS Eight of the 10 schools teach implant dentistry and utilised didactic lectures as mode of teaching. Simulations were used in only 1 (12.5%) of the schools whilst clinical demonstration was reported by 2 (25.0%) of the schools. Only 2 (25.0%) of the schools allowed students to experience direct patient care with no school expecting students to provide implant treatment. Almost all schools 9 (90.0%) identified insufficient resources and lack of dental industry support as barriers to effective teaching of implant dentistry. All the dental schools had plans to improve teaching of implant dentistry. CONCLUSION Teaching of dental implantology in Nigeria is mainly theoretical with no clinical competence assigned. High resolution melt analysis (HRMA) was also used to assess the presence of quinolone resistance-associated mutations in 100 of these strains.   • Gingival carcinoma is a common malignant tumor occurring in the anterior area of the mandible, which can be derived from the epithelium of gingival mucosa. Surgical extended resection is the main treatment of gingival cancer, which can lead to anterior mandibular defect including mouth floor and mandible and mucosa of lower lip. According to the size of the defect, the common repair method is free musculocutaneous flap with vascular pedicle or pedicle flap. We present a method of repairing mandibular anterior tooth defect with an island flap pedicled with the mental artery.Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) originating from the external auditory canal are uncommon; only few cases have been reported in the literature. In this article, we report a case of a 35-year-old man who presented with a 6-month history of a gradual swelling in the entrance of the left external auditory meatus associated with hearing loss. The tumor was surgically removed, and histological examination showed spindle-cell proliferation with a collagenous stroma. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for CD34 confirming the diagnosis of an SFT. Although SFTs are benign, complications such as relapses and metastasis after excision were reported. Thus, a careful and long follow-up is recommended.The bony cochlear nerve canal transmits the cochlear nerve as it passes from the fundus of the internal auditory canal to the cochlea. Stenosis of the cochlear nerve canal, defined as a diameter less than 1.0 mm in transverse diameter, is associated with inner ear anomalies and severe to profound congenital hearing loss. We describe an 11-month-old infant with nonsyndromic congenital sensorineural hearing loss with cochlear nerve canal stenosis. Next-generation sequencing revealed heterozygous mutations in MYH9 and MYH14, encoding for the inner ear proteins myosin heavy chain IIA and IIC. The patient's hearing was rehabilitated with bilateral cochlear implantation.Tumor suppressor genes RB1 and TP53 are altered frequently in prostate cancer (PC), whether RB1 and TP53 inactivation promotes radioresistance remains unclear. Herein, we demonstrated that RB1 loss enhanced ionizing radiation (IR)-induced DNA damage to inhibit cell proliferation and promote cellular senescence through a TP53-dependent pathway in LNCaP cells. Furthermore, the stabilization of TP53 was regulated by ATM-mediated phosphorylation of MDM2 at Ser395. However, inactivation of RB1/TP53 reversed DNA damage-induced cellular senescence and promoted radiation survival. Importantly, combined with PARP1 inhibitor restored radiosensitivity. In this report, we describe a case of salivary duct carcinoma that showed only a squamous cell carcinoma component on the initial primary tumor site biopsy, as well as in subsequent contralateral neck lymph node and skin metastases. Apart from the variable morphology, the typical salivary duct and squamous cell carcinoma tumor components also showed significant immunohistochemical differences, including differential staining of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2/neu. The associated diagnostic pitfalls, distinct immunoprofiles of the tumor components, helpful adjuncts for making the correct diagnosis, and associated therapeutic implications are discussed.
    Perinatal stroke is a leading cause of hemiparetic cerebral palsy and lifelong disability. Neurodevelopmental outcomes are difficult to predict and markers of long-term poor outcome continue to be investigated. Deceleration in growth of head circumference has been associated with worse developmental outcomes in neonatal brain injury. We hypothesized thatperinatal stroke would result in decreased rates of head growth during childhood that would be associated with worse developmental outcomes.

    Patients with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-confirmed neonatal arterial ischemic stroke and arterial presumed perinatal ischemic stroke were identified from a population-based research cohort (Alberta Perinatal Stroke Project). Demographics and occipital-frontal circumference data were collected from medical records. Head growth was compared to typically developing control charts using a 2-tailed
    test. The Fisher exact test was used to examine associations between Pediatric Stroke Outcome Measures (PSOM) scores and occipital-frontal head circumference.

    Three hundred fifteen occipital-frontal head circumference measurements were collected from 102 patients (48 female, 54 male), over a median of 3.2 years (standard deviation = 5.18, range = 0-18.3).   • Dasycerus poseidon Hu Liang, sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on fresh specimens from central and southern Taiwan, which filled in the disjunct distribution between the Japanese archipelago and south-eastern Asia. The new species represents the first record of the subfamily Dasycerinae in Taiwan. The barcoding sequence of the holotype of D. poseidon Hu Liang, sp. nov.is provided, and revealed a surprisingly large genetic distance within the genus. Bleekeria nigrilinea sp. nov. has no pelvic fins, 37-39 dorsal-fin rays, 49-50 total vertebrae, 2½ scale rows between dorsal-fin origin and lateral line (the smallest count within the genus with B. estuaria of Mozambique brackish water), 5-6 scales on mid-upper part of opercle arranged in a single row, scales on central part of body clearly longer than their height, upper and lower margins of caudal fin black when fresh (unique within the genus). The COI gene sequences of the two new species showed clear genetic divergence (pairwise K2P, >10 %) from Bleekeria estuaria Randall Ida, 2014 and Bleekeria mitsukurii (Jordan Evermann, 1902). A key to the species of Bleekeria is provided.
    Dasycerus poseidon Hu Liang, sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on fresh specimens from central and southern Taiwan, which filled in the disjunct distribution between the Japanese archipelago and south-eastern Asia. The new species represents the first record of the subfamily Dasycerinae in Taiwan. The barcoding sequence of the holotype of D. poseidon Hu Liang, sp. nov.is provided, and revealed a surprisingly large genetic distance within the genus. The new species superficially resembles the spotted-patterned He. leopardinus, but differs from it in exhibiting dorsal spots fused into irregular bands, and a unique hemipenial structure with two pairs of distinctly enlarged basal spines. In the current study, **** were pretreated with a traditional antimicrobial agent, FZD, before TBI; the protective effects of FZD on radiation injury were evaluated by using parameters such as the spleen index and thymus index, immunohistochemical staining of intestinal tissue, and frequency of micronuclei in polychromatophilic erythrocytes of bone marrow. The intestinal epithelial cell line IEC-6 was used to investigate the underlying mechanisms. Our results indicated that FZD administration significantly improved the survival of lethal dose-irradiated ****, decreased the number of micronuclei, upregulated the number of leukocytes and immune organ indices, and restored intestinal integrity in **** after TBI. TUNEL and western blot showed that FZD protected intestinal tissue by downregulating radiation-induced apoptosis and autophagy. Meanwhile, FZD protected IEC-6 cells from radiation-induced cell death by inhibiting apoptosis and autophagy. To sum up, FZD protected against radiation-induced cell death both in vitro and in vivo through antiapoptosis and antiautophagy mechanisms.Anthocyanins from the petals of Hibiscus syriacus L. (PS) possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimelanogenic activities. However, it remains unclear whether PS inhibit the NLR family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation and assembly. This study is aimed at investigating whether PS downregulate NLRP3-mediated inflammasome by inhibiting nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. BV2 microglia cells were treated with PS in the presence of lipopolysaccharide and adenosine triphosphate (LPS/ATP), and the NLRP3-related signaling pathway was investigated. In this study, we found that LPS/ATP treatment activated the NLRP3 inflammasome, which resulted in the release of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-18. Meanwhile, PS reduced LPS/ATP-mediated NLRP3 inflammasome at 12 h by inhibiting ER stress-mediated Ca2+ accumulation and subsequent mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) production, which, in turn, decreased IL-1β and IL-18 release. Furthermore, PS inhibited the NLRP3 inflammasome 1 h after LPS/ATP treatment by suppressing the NF-κB pathway, which downregulated Ca2+ accumulation and mtROS production. These data showed that PS negatively regulated activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in a time-different manner by inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway in the early stage and the ER stress response in the late stage. The pathways shared Ca2+ accumulation-mediated mtROS production, which was significantly inhibited in the presence of PS. Despite extensive research, there is no curative Western treatment. Medications, such as riluzole and edaravone, are, at best, slightly life-prolonging. Most published accounts of acupuncture treatments for ALS have described Traditional Chinese Medicine points. Case A 60-year-old man had moderately advanced ALS. He was wheelchair-bound, and had wasting muscles, a weak voice, and dysphagia. No Western medical treatment altered the progression of his disease. Treatment for this patient started with Chinese Scalp Acupuncture (CSA) and, eventually, auricular acupuncture was incorporated. Traditional Chinese acupuncture points and other acupuncture techniques were added later for specific purposes. Results This treatment combination produced several days of robust clinical improvement after each treatment in terms of speaking, sensation, ambulation, and breathing. Conclusions It is possible that the combination of CSA and auriculotherapy had a synergistic effect that was beneficial for this patient. Other traditional Chinese acupuncture points that were added to the treatment helped address specific issues but did not appear to have any substantial impact on his larger ALS symptoms. ALS is a progressive neurologic disease that is uniformly fatal. More clinical research is needed to evaluate the role of CSA and auricular acupuncture in treating this disease.

We found co-occurrences of clusters of elevated concentrations of air pollutants such as PM2.5, high poverty indexes, and high TB incidence in Lima. METHODS To understand the transmission of Cryptosporidium spp. in these animals, 709 fecal samples were collected in this study from Chinese bamboo rats (Rhizomys sinensis) on nine farms in Jiangxi, Guangxi and Hainan provinces, China. They were analyzed for Cryptosporidium spp. using PCR and sequence analyses of the small subunit rRNA gene. Cryptosporidium parvum, C. parvum-like and C. ubiquitum-like genotypes identified were subtyped by sequence analysis of the 60 kDa glycoprotein (gp60) gene. RESULTS Altogether, Cryptosporidium spp. were detected in 209 (29.5%) samples. The detection rate in samples from animals under two months of age (70.0%,105/150) was significantly higher than in samples from animals above 2 months (18.6%, 104/559; χ2 = 150.27, df = 1, P  less then  0.0001). They were analyzed for Cryptosporidium spp. using PCR and sequence analyses of the small subunit rRNA gene. Cryptosporidium parvum, C. parvum-like and C. ubiquitum-like genotypes identified were subtyped by sequence analysis of the 60 kDa glycoprotein (gp60) gene. RESULTS Altogether, Cryptosporidium spp. were detected in 209 (29.5%) samples.     This study aims to assess the repercussions of working parents in Jammu belonging to nuclear and joint families on the oral and dental health of children aged 2-14.

    A cross-sectional study was conducted in which a total of 1,848 children were examined from March 01, 2012, to February 28, 2014, who came to seek treatment in the Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Indira Gandhi Govt. Dental College and Hospital, Jammu, along with the accompanying parents. Assessment was based on the following parameters dental caries, eruption status of teeth, and orthodontic status.

    Age-wise distribution of the patients was done in four groups, 2-5 years (33%), 5-8 years (30%), 8-11 years (21%), and 11-14 years (16%), and were examined as per the above-mentioned criteria. The results were compiled and statistically analyzed using Chi-square test. Children of working parents exhibited more incidence of dental caries which was statistically analyzed (
    value = 0.111) and was found insignificant and when analyzed as per the retained deciduous teeth and orthodontic anomalies (
    value <0.05) was found to be highly significant. Also, children belonging to the nuclear families whether employed or unemployed were found to be more affected by the above-mentioned dental diseases.

    It was seen that the children whose both parents were working had more incidence of dental caries, over-retained deciduous teeth, and were possessing habits that lead to orthodontic anomalies.

    Developmental defects of enamel especially enamel hypomineralization are prevalent among children. Hypomineralized second primary molars (HSPM) present a serious clinical dilemma for the current practitioners. It represents as a potential predictive factor for molar incisal hypomineralization (MIH). The reported prevalence of HSPMs in India however still remains uncertain.

    A total of 649 children aged 6-10 years were randomly selected from various schools in ***** NCR. The teeth were indexed for developmental defects of enamel using modified European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry judgment criteria given by Ghanim et al.

    A total of 83 HSPMs were observed in 33 of the 649 subjects examined, with a prevalence of 5%. Molars affected had prevalence of 62.88%, with two deciduous molars being most commonly affected.     The orthodontic treatment planning relies on correct diagnosis of skeletal discrepancy, which demands accurate and precise cephalometric parameters. This study proposed an angle, which is based on unvarying cephalometric points and gives a true sagittal skeletal maxillomandibular relationship.

    The present study was conducted on 279 individuals (13-30 years), which were divided into three groups (class I, II, and III skeletal malocclusion) depending on beta, wits, and ANB (A point, Nasion, B point) angles. Tau angle was measured, which lied at the junction of lines connecting the points T to G and G to M. ANOVA and the Dunnett T3
    test were used to discern difference between three skeletal patterns. The gender difference in each skeletal pattern was found using the unpaired Student's
    -test. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves determined the Tau angle's sensitivity and specificity to differentiate among skeletal patterns.

    The Tau angle between 28° and 34° suggests a skeletal class I malocclusion; values below 28° show a class III skeletal pattern and above 34° suggest skeletal class II pattern.

    Tau angle gives a true sagittal skeletal relationship, which depends on stable landmarks and is unaffected by rotation of jaws in vertical dimension due to growth or orthodontic therapy.

    To know the association of sense of coherence (SOC), caries experience, and socioeconomic status (SES) in 11-16-year-old schoolchildren.

    This cross-sectional study included a total of 595 schoolchildren aged 11-16 years, and informed consent was obtained. Demographic and socioeconomic data were collected through pro forma filled by the parents. Sense of coherence of children was recorded with SOC-13 item questionnaire given in both English and local language (Telugu). Caries experience was recorded with DMFT index by carrying out the intra-oral examination of children.

    In a total of 595 schoolchildren, 35% children have weak SOC, 34.9% have moderate SOC, and 29.9% have strong SOC. Caries experience was inversely associated with SOC (
    value = 0.006) on analysis by ANOVA. On multivariate regression analysis, it was observed that for every one-unit increase in SOC, caries experience decreased by 0.11 unit. However, there was statistically no significant (
    value = 0.09) relation between childhood SES and SOC.

At these time points, placental tissues were collected for the evaluation of progesterone receptor (PGR) protein expression (whole tissue), and mRNA expression in maternal (caruncular, CAR) and fetal (cotyledon, COT) (separated and COT, and PAQR5 (membrane PGR gamma) was greatest (P  less then  0.0001) on day 130 in COT, but similar throughout pregnancy in CAR. The aim of this study was to assess seasonal variations during different periods of the breeding season (spring and summer) on stallion sperm DNA fragmentation and in vivo fertility associated with cooled-stored semen samples. Ejaculates were collected from eleven stallions and assessed for sperm motility (assessed by computer-assisted sperm analysis) and plasma membrane integrity (evaluated under fluorescence microscopy). Sperm DNA fragmentation (evaluated by the Sperm Chromatin Dispersion test) was assessed in cooled-stored semen at 5 °C for up to 24 h. Artificial insemination was performed throughout the breeding season. Mares were inseminated with cooled-stored semen (up to 24 h) every other day until ovulation. Pregnancy rates per cycle were determined detecting the embryonic vesicle by ultrasonography fifteen days after ovulation. Values (mean ± SD) for progressive sperm motility were significantly higher (P  0.05). Sperm DNA fragmentation was significantly lower (P  less then  0.01) in spring in comparison to summer after 0h (4.81 ± 1.87% vs. 8.77 ± 5.78%), 6h (9.00 ± 3.19% vs. 18.73 ± 8.22%) and 24h (14.6 ± 4.13% vs. 30.14 ± 9.85%) of cooled-storage. Pregnancy rates per cycle were also significantly higher (P  less then  0.01) in spring (50%) in comparison to summer (37%). There was a moderate negative relationship between positive pregnancies and sperm with fragmented DNA (r = - 0.619; P  less then  0.001). The current review was undertaken to study the diversified disease spectrum, pathogenicity, and resistance patterns of Morganella morganii. STUDY DESIGN This study is a review of the diversified disease spectrum of M. morganii. METHODS The articles used in this review were all extracted from PubMed and Google Scholar, using the terms 'M. morganii', 'prevalence', 'virulence factors', 'infections', 'resistance pattern', and 'genomics'. This review includes original articles, reviews, and case reports focusing on M. morganii, hospital-based prevalence studies, and studies on resistance in M. morganii published between 1906 and April 2019. Articles published in English, French, Spanish, and Chinese were reviewed. RESULTS M. morganii has had a significant impact as a clinical pathogen and the pace of its occurrence and the increase in its resistance rates puts this bacterium on the path to becoming the next 'superbug'. These developments not only impact M. morganii, but as a result of gene and plasmid transfer evolution, other clinical pathogens have been able to acquire their diverse intrinsic and acquired virulence genes. Its vast host range raises concerns around its capacity to generate new infections through novel symbiotic relationships. CONCLUSIONS M. morganii opportunism is being increasingly reported across the globe. This bacterium is accumulating intrinsic and acquired multidrug resistance genes, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality rates for M. morganii infections and complicating its treatment. M. morganii should be recognized as a clinically significant pathogen, and clinicians should place this microorganism in the list of causative possibilities during patient care. These data indicate that expression of PGR in ovine placenta is dependent on stage of pregnancy and plane of nutrition in sheep. The mechanisms of how diet and stage of pregnancy influences placental PGR expression and function remains to be elucidated. The aim of this study was to assess seasonal variations during different periods of the breeding season (spring and summer) on stallion sperm DNA fragmentation and in vivo fertility associated with cooled-stored semen samples. Ejaculates were collected from eleven stallions and assessed for sperm motility (assessed by computer-assisted sperm analysis) and plasma membrane integrity (evaluated under fluorescence microscopy). Sperm DNA fragmentation (evaluated by the Sperm Chromatin Dispersion test) was assessed in cooled-stored semen at 5 °C for up to 24 h. Artificial insemination was performed throughout the breeding season. Mares were inseminated with cooled-stored semen (up to 24 h) every other day until ovulation. Pregnancy rates per cycle were determined detecting the embryonic vesicle by ultrasonography fifteen days after ovulation. Values (mean ± SD) for progressive sperm motility were significantly higher (P  0.05). Sperm DNA fragmentation was significantly lower (P  less then  0.01) in spring in comparison to summer after 0h (4.81 ± 1.87% vs. 8.77 ± 5.78%), 6h (9.00 ± 3.19% vs. 18.73 ± 8.22%) and 24h (14.6 ± 4.13% vs. 30.14 ± 9.85%) of cooled-storage. Pregnancy rates per cycle were also significantly higher (P  less then  0.01) in spring (50%) in comparison to summer (37%). There was a moderate negative relationship between positive pregnancies and sperm with fragmented DNA (r = - 0.619; P  less then  0.001). Semen samples associated with moderate fertility levels (Pregnancy rate  less then  50%) showed a higher percentage of sperm with fragmented DNA compared to samples obtaining higher fertility levels. In conclusion, seasonal variations were found during the breeding season, obtaining lower sperm DNA fragmentation and higher pregnancy rates in spring. Additionally, samples with the highest proportion of sperm with fragmented DNA showed the lowest fertility levels throughout the breeding season. OBJECTIVES The global increase in rare opportunistic microbial infections is alarming. The current review was undertaken to study the diversified disease spectrum, pathogenicity, and resistance patterns of Morganella morganii. STUDY DESIGN This study is a review of the diversified disease spectrum of M. morganii. METHODS The articles used in this review were all extracted from PubMed and Google Scholar, using the terms 'M. morganii', 'prevalence', 'virulence factors', 'infections', 'resistance pattern', and 'genomics'. This review includes original articles, reviews, and case reports focusing on M. morganii, hospital-based prevalence studies, and studies on resistance in M. morganii published between 1906 and April 2019. Articles published in English, French, Spanish, and Chinese were reviewed. RESULTS M. morganii has had a significant impact as a clinical pathogen and the pace of its occurrence and the increase in its resistance rates puts this bacterium on the path to becoming the next 'superbug'. These developments not only impact M. morganii, but as a result of gene and plasmid transfer evolution, other clinical pathogens have been able to acquire their diverse intrinsic and acquired virulence genes. Its vast host range raises concerns around its capacity to generate new infections through novel symbiotic relationships. CONCLUSIONS M. morganii opportunism is being increasingly reported across the globe. This bacterium is accumulating intrinsic and acquired multidrug resistance genes, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality rates for M. morganii infections and complicating its treatment. M. morganii should be recognized as a clinically significant pathogen, and clinicians should place this microorganism in the list of causative possibilities during patient care. It is important for both the infection control activities in hospitals and in public health sector.
