  • Complete snow avalanche burial is associated with high mortality. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and incidence of organ retrieval in brain-dead donors following cardiorespiratory arrest due to avalanche burial and to evaluate the function of transplanted organs.

    The transplant registry of the Medical University of Innsbruck was searched for organ donors with a history of avalanche burial, and the function and survival of transplanted organs were assessed.

    Thirty-three organs were procured from eight donors and 31 organs (13 kidneys, 6 livers, 3 pancreases, 5 hearts, 4 lungs) were ultimately transplanted. Allograft and recipient 1-year survival were 100% and both initial and long-term graft function were good. Only one-third of all avalanche victims who died in the ICU with signs of irreversible hypoxic brain injury became organ donors.

    Initial experience from this retrospective study suggests that organs from brain-dead avalanche victims can be transplanted with good results.     The incidence, risks, and outcomes associated with pulmonary hypertension (P-HTN) in the kidney transplant (KTx) population are not well described.

    We linked U.S. transplant registry data with Medicare claims (2006-2016) to investigate P-HTN diagnoses among Medicare-insured KTx recipients (N=35,512) using billing claims. Cox regression was applied to identify independent correlates and outcomes of P-HTN (adjusted hazard ratio, aHR, 95%LCLaHR95%UCL), and to examine P-HTN diagnoses as time-dependent mortality predictors.

    Overall, 8.2% of recipients had a diagnostic code for P-HTN within 2 years preceding transplant. By 3 years posttransplant, P-HTN was diagnosed in 10.310.6%11.0 of the study cohort. After adjustment, posttransplant P-HTN was more likely in KTx recipients who were older (aHR for age >60 vs. 18-30 years 1.912.403.01) or female (aHR, 1.151.241.34), who had pretransplant P-HTN (aHR, 4.384.795.24), coronary artery disease (aHR, 1.051.151.27), valvular heart disease (aHR, 1.221.321.43), perification, and management strategies to improve outcomes in KTx recipients who develop P-HTN.
    Expedited partner treatment (EPT) is effective for preventing STI recurrence, but concerns about intimate partner violence and missed opportunities for HIV testing have limited its use in African settings.

    We conducted a pilot prospective evaluation of EPT among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) accessing HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis in an implementation project in Kisumu, Kenya. Those with etiologic diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) were treated and given the option of delivering STI medication and HIV self-test kits to their current sexual partner(s). At enrollment, we assessed their reasons for declining. Three months after they delivered medication and kits to the partner(s), we assessed their reasons for failing to deliver medication and kits to their partner and reported partner's reactions.

    Between September 2018 and March 2020, 63 AGYW were enrolled. The majority 59/63 (94%) accepted EPT and 50/63 (79%) partner HIVST. Three-quarters (46/59) of those accepting EPT returned for the assessment visit with 41/46 (89%) successfully delivering medication to 54 partners, of whom 49/54 (91%) used it. Seventy percent (35/50) who took partner HIVST kits returned for the assessment with 80% (28/35) reporting providing kits to 40 partners, of whom 38/40 (95% ) used it. Reported barriers to EPT and partner HIVST uptake among women who declined included anticipated fear that their partner could become angry or violent, and loss of relationship.

    We used California (CA) surveillance data to describe trends in case reporting for gonorrhea (GC), chlamydia (CT), and syphilis of any stage in the pre- versus post- COVID-19 eras (January-June 2019 and January-June 2020). We also analyzed data from an electronic survey administered by the CA STD Control Branch to local health jurisdictions (LHJs) in April, June, and September of 2020 assessing the impact of COVID-19 on STD programs.

    There were sharp declines in cases of all reportable bacterial STDs occurring in conjunction with the March 19, 2020 CA stay-at-home order, most of which did not return to baseline by July. Comparing January-June 2020 to January-June of 2019, there were decreases in reported cases of CT (31%), late latent syphilis (19%), primary/secondary syphilis (15%), early non-primary non-secondary syphilis (14%), and GC (13%).

    Fibrinolysis shutdown associated with severe thrombotic complications is a recently recognized syndrome that was previously seldom investigated in patients with severe severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection.     Thymic adenocarcinoma is an extremely rare thymic carcinoma. The exact genetic alteration associated with thymic adenocarcinoma is unclear. Here, we report a case of thymic adenocarcinoma accompanied by type A thymoma and pulmonary minimally invasive adenocarcinoma (MIA).

    A 53-year-old woman presented with multiple nodules in the mediastinum and lung. Thoracic computed tomography revealed nodules in the anterior superior mediastinum and anterior mediastinum near the right pericardium and ground-glass opacity (GGO) in the right superior lobe of the lung.

    The tumor in the anterior superior mediastinum was diagnosed as primary thymic papillary adenocarcinoma. The tumor in the anterior mediastinum near the right pericardium was diagnosed as type A thymoma. The GGO of the right superior lobe of the lung was diagnosed as a MIA.

    The patient underwent thoracoscopic mediastinal tumor resection and partial lobectomy in our hospital.

    The postoperative course was uneventful. The patient is alive and free of therigin. Molecular genetic analysis indicated that these tumors harbored different mutations. The thymic adenocarcinoma and type A thymoma both had the mutation of KMT2A, but the mutation sites were different. KMT2A mutation may be a common genetic change in thymic tumorigenesis. The genetic alterations disclosed in this study will help expand the understanding of thymic tumors.

Kaplan-Meier analysed assessed overall survival (OS) after stratification according to marital status, age, histologic subtype, metastatic status, and treatment. The significant differences were assessed in a log-rank test. Univariate and multivariate cox hazard regression analysis were performed to determine independent predictors of OS.

    From a total of 560,124 patients with prostate cancer diagnosed between 2006 and 2015, we identified 510 cases of de novo NEPC. Regarding histology, among all the NEPC, 329 (64.5%) patients were diagnosed as small cell carcinoma, 181 (39.8%) were nonsmall cell carcinoma but the incidence of NEPC has been increasing in the past years. The prognosis of NEPC is poor because most cases are diagnosed at metastatic stage. The patients with metastases are typically treated with chemotherapy and chemotherapy shows survival benefits in both regional and distant metastatic tumor patients.

Random-effects meta-analysis models were used to report pooled results.Clinical data from 2874 children with COVID-19 from 37 articles were finally included for quantitative analyses. Fever (48.5%, 95% CI 41.4%-55.6%) and cough (40.6%, 95% CI 33.9%-47.5%) were the most common symptoms; asymptomatic infection and severe cases, respectively, accounted for 27.7% (95% CI 19.7%-36.4%) patients and 1.1% of the 1933 patients included. Laboratory tests showed 5.5% (95% CI 2.8%-8.9%) of the patients had lymphopen.0% (95% CI 27.7%-44.7%).We found that children with COVID-19 had relatively mild disease, with quite a lot of asymptomatic infections and low rate of severe illness. Data was collected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance system and included patients newly diagnosed with CKD between 2000 and 2012. The endpoint of interest was a diagnosis of RVD. Follow-up data of 85,596 patients with CKD and 85,596 matched comparisons (non-CKD) from 2000 to 2012 were analyzed. Patients with CKD were found to have a significantly higher cumulative incidence of RVD (Kaplan-Meier analysis, log-rank test P < .0001). Through multivariate Cox regression analysis, the CKD group was found to have higher risk of developing RVD (adjusted hazard ratio (HR) [95% confidence interval (CI)] 2.30 [2.16-2.44]) when compared to the control cohort. When comparison of CKD group and non-CKD group was stratified by gender, age and comorbidities (hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia), the higher risk of RVD in patients with CKD remained significant in all subgroups. In this review, we discuss how ML has been recently employed in the study of cell motility and morphodynamics to identify phenotypes from computer vision analysis. We focus on new approaches to extract and learn meaningful spatiotemporal features from complex live cell images for cellular and subcellular phenotyping.

Glucose levels, lipids levels, and inflammatory indicators in serum were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Furthermore, the expression of G protein-coupled receptor 5 (TGR5) pathway genes in rat colon tissue was detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis (RT-PCR). Our result revealed that FC alleviates obesity by reducing body weight (BW) and waist circumference, managing inflammation and improving glycolipid metabolism, liver function, and liver lipid peroxidation in vivo. In addition, the mechanism of FC on obesity is possibly the stimulation of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) secretion by activating the TGR5 pathway in intestinal endocrine cells. Our studies highlight the obesity reduction effects of FC and one of the mechanisms may be the activation of the TGR5 pathway in intestinal endocrine cells.To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of sofren injection combined with conventional Western medicine in the treatment of angina pectoris. We prospectively enrolled 163 hospitalized adults with dengue, for whom 1,141 real-time complete blood count (CBC) results were obtained via a hematology analyzer and updated in the LIS database. The median (interquartile range (IQR)) duration of analytic turnaround times (TATs) was 40.0 (30.0-53.0) minutes. Linear regression analysis indicated a significant relationship between Hgb and Hct with a coefficient of determination (Pearson's R 2) of 0.92 at red blood cell distribution width (RDW) ≤18, but Pearson's R 2 decreased to 0.78 at RDW >18. The Hct calculated from the three-fold conversion method and from the analyzer had a Pearson's R 2 of 0.92. At Hgb less then 12 g/dl and ≥16 g/dl, a greater difference between the two Hct values was observed, with median (IQR) differences of -0.8% (-1.9%-0.2%) and 0.8% (-0.1%-1.7%), respectively (P value less then 0.05). In conclusion, the Hgb and Hct of patients with dengue were highly correlated at RDW ≤18. Firstly, we assessed the release rate of KGN from the FG-KGN complex and then created a rabbit rotator cuff tendon graft-bone tunnel model. The rabbits received saline, FG-KGN, or FG injections onto the tendon to bone interface after injury. Shoulder tissues were harvested at 6 and 12 weeks, and the sections were stained with HE and Safranin O/Fast green. The samples were assessed by histologic evaluation and biomechanical testing.   • Monocyte infiltration and macrophage polarization are widely considered as pivotal steps for the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. Previous studies suggested that zanthoxylum piperitum had strong analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. However, it remains unclear whether zanthoxylum piperitum inhibits inflammation via macrophage function. In the present study, we investigated the effects of xanthoplanine (the total alkaloid extract of zanthoxylum piperitum) on macrophage function. CCK-8 kit was performed to determine cell viability and the preferred concentration of xanthoplanine. We assayed the effects of xanthoplanine on markers of macrophage polarization and inflammation via quantitative PCR and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and measured the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by flow cytometry. Immunoblots, co-immunoprecipitation, immunofluorescence and Luciferase activity were performed to investigate the molecular mechanism of STAT signaling pathway in response to xanthoplanine. We found that xanthoplanine (50 and 100 μM) significantly reduced M1 polarization and promoted M2 polarization. The contents of inflammatory cytokines measured by ELISA were markedly decreased in macrophages pretreated with xanthoplanine, compared with those induced by LPS and IFN-γ. In parallel, xanthoplanine alleviated the production of ROS in macrophages induced by LPS and IFN-γ. Moreover, xanthoplanine alleviated STAT5 phosphorylation and blocked STAT5 nuclear translocation without alterations in CrkL expression, subsequently interrupting the interaction between p-STAT5 and CrkL. Likewise, xanthoplanine prominently attenuated the transcription activity of STAT5 induced by LPS and IFN-γ but did not affect the transcription activity of STAT1 and STAT3. Xanthoplanine attenuated M1 phenotypic switch and macrophage inflammation via blocking the formation of CrkL-STAT5 complex. The present study addressed this issue by investigating functional patterns of EEG alpha activity while 93 participants viewed nonverbal humorous cartoons until they indicated having recognized the punch line, and subsequently vocalized their idea as to what constituted it. In a similar fashion, EEG was also assessed during performance of the Alternate Uses Task (AUT), in order to identify similarities and differences in EEG alpha activity implicated in conventional creative cognition vs. humor comprehension. Analyses revealed a pattern of robust task-related alpha power increases in both tasks, which were markedly more right-lateralized at ventral fronto-temporal sites in the humor task as compared to the AUT. Findings are interpreted in line with recent literature on the functional role of alpha activity in the creativity domain. Altogether, this study adds further evidence to the particular role of EEG alpha oscillations in creative cognition and supports the idea that conventional creative ideation and the comprehension of humor share neural mechanisms affiliated to creative cognition. Psychological assessments typically rely on self-report and behavioral measures. Augmenting these with neurophysiological measures of the construct in question may increase the accuracy and predictive power of these assessments. Percentile scores and distributions for ERPs on error trials, correct trials, and the difference (ΔERN, ΔPe; error minus correct) at Fz, Cz and Pz are reported. The 25th, 50th, and 75th percentile values for the ΔERN at Cz were -2.37 ​μV, -5.41 ​μV, and -8.65 ​μV, respectively. The same values for ΔPe at Cz were 7.51 ​μV, 11.18 ​μV, and 15.55 ​μV. Females displayed significantly larger ΔPe magnitudes and smaller ΔERN magnitudes than males.     Monocyte infiltration and macrophage polarization are widely considered as pivotal steps for the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. Previous studies suggested that zanthoxylum piperitum had strong analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. However, it remains unclear whether zanthoxylum piperitum inhibits inflammation via macrophage function. In the present study, we investigated the effects of xanthoplanine (the total alkaloid extract of zanthoxylum piperitum) on macrophage function. CCK-8 kit was performed to determine cell viability and the preferred concentration of xanthoplanine. We assayed the effects of xanthoplanine on markers of macrophage polarization and inflammation via quantitative PCR and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and measured the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by flow cytometry. Immunoblots, co-immunoprecipitation, immunofluorescence and Luciferase activity were performed to investigate the molecular mechanism of STAT signaling pathway in response to xanthoplanine. We found that xanthoplanine (50 and 100 μM) significantly reduced M1 polarization and promoted M2 polarization. The contents of inflammatory cytokines measured by ELISA were markedly decreased in macrophages pretreated with xanthoplanine, compared with those induced by LPS and IFN-γ. In parallel, xanthoplanine alleviated the production of ROS in macrophages induced by LPS and IFN-γ. Moreover, xanthoplanine alleviated STAT5 phosphorylation and blocked STAT5 nuclear translocation without alterations in CrkL expression, subsequently interrupting the interaction between p-STAT5 and CrkL.   • A three-component Minisci reaction coupling of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds with vinyl ethers and quinolines or isoquinolines under visible light is developed. The 1,3-dicarbonyl compound undergoes single-electron oxidation to afford an electrophilic 1,3-dicarbonyl radical under visible light irradiation. Due to the polarity of the free radical, the electrophilic radical adds to the electron-rich olefin to afford the nucleophilic radical. It coupled with the heteroarene to afford the three-component coupling products.Liquid metal forms a thin layer of oxide skin via exposure to oxygen and this layer could be exfoliated by mechanical delamination or gas-injection/solvent-dispersion. Although the room-temperature fabrication of two-dimensional (2D) oxide through gas-injection and water-dispersion has been successfully demonstrated, a synthetic protocol in nonaqueous solvent at elevated temperature still remains as a challenge. Herein we report the mass-production of amorphous 2D SnOx nanoflakes with Bi decoration from liquid Sn-Bi alloy and selected nonaqueous solvents. The functional groups of the solvents play a key role in determining the final morphology of the product and the hydroxyl-rich solvents exhibit the best control toward 2D SnOx. Upon physisorption of antibodies, all particle systems exhibited enhanced association with target antigens, with CoII systems demonstrating more than 2-fold greater association. These systems contained more metal atoms distributed in a way to specifically interact with antibodies, which were investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. A model antibody fragment crystallizable (Fc) region in solution with CoII-tannic acid complexes revealed that the solvent-exposed CoII can directly coordinate to the histidine-rich portion of the Fc region. The crude extract inhibited the release of all cytokines except IL-1β, which slightly increased in comparison to the LPS control. All the tested compounds suppressed the production of IL-2, GM-CSF, and TNF-α. This observation indicates the plausibility of the concerted action of different structural domains of SMC to bind and condense the chromosome. BACKGROUND In the CASTLE-AF trial, catheter ablation reduced the risk of death and heart failure (HF) hospitalization in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and HF by 40%. OBJECTIVES The study aimed to assess the generalizability of CASTLE-AF to routine clinical practice. METHODS Using a large US administrative database, we identified 289,831 patients with AF and HF treated with ablation (N=7,465) or medical therapy alone (N=282,366) from 1/1/2008-8/31/2018. Patients were divided into three groups based on trial eligibility (1) eligible for CASTLE-AF; (2) failing to meet the inclusion criterion; and (3) meeting ≥1 of the exclusion criteria. Propensity score overlap weighting was used to balance ablated and drug-treated patients on 90 baseline characteristics. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to compare ablation to medical therapy for the primary outcome, a composite endpoint of all-cause mortality and HF hospitalization. RESULTS Only 7.8% of patients would have been eligible for the trial, 91.0% failed to meet the trial inclusion criteria, and 15.5% met the exclusion criteria. Ablation was associated with a lower risk of the primary outcome in the overall cohort (hazard ratio [HR] 0.81 [0.76-0.87], p less then 0.001), in the trial-eligible cohort (HR 0.82 [0.70-0.96], p=0.01), and in patients who failed to meet inclusion criteria (HR 0.79 [0.73-0.86], p less then 0.001), but not in patients who met exclusion criteria (HR 0.97 [0.81-1.17]). The relative risk reduction was consistent regardless of whether patients had HFrEF. CONCLUSIONS The benefit associated with ablation appears to be more modest in practice than that reported in the CASTLE-AF trial. We investigated the effects of Kalach 360 SL (KL), Glyphosate (G)-based herbicide, on bone tissue in different groups of female Wistar rats. Group 1 (n = 6) received a standard diet and served as a control, groups 2 and 3 (n = 6 each) received 0.07 ml (D1 126 mg/Kg) and 0.175 ml (D2 315 mg/Kg) of KL dissolved in the water for 60 days. The plasma was used to examine the metabolic balance markers (calcium, phosphorus, phosphatase alkaline (PAL), and vitamin D (vit D) and hormonal status (oestrogen and thyroid hormones). As a result, sub-chronic exposure to KL induced a perturbation of bone metabolism (calcium and phosphorus) and hormonal status disturbance. The histological and immunohistochemical study of the thyroid gland revealed a disturbance in morphological structure and thyroid cells function. Moreover, the KL disrupting eff ;ect on thyroid function was investigated by measuring changes in plasma levels of thyroid hormones. Free triiodothyronine (FT3) and thyroxine (FT4) were decreased in female rats breast-fed from rats treated with D and D2 of KL. This eff ;ect was associated with an increase in the plasma level of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Thus, that KL leads to hypothyroidism. Decrease in levels of oestrogen and thyroid dysfunction led to a disruption in the skeletal bone. The histological study and SEM in bone results allowed us to observe, in rats exposed to KL, the thinning and discontinuity of bone trabecular with a significant decrease in the number of nodes (intertrabecular links).In conclusion, KL sub-chronic exposure caused an aspect of osteoporosis. The hypothesis that in utero exposures to low levels of trichloroethylene (TCE) may increase the risk of congenital heart defects (CHDs) in offspring remains a subject of substantial controversy within the scientific community due primarily to the reliance on an inconsistent and unreproducible experimental study in rats. BACKGROUND In the CASTLE-AF trial, catheter ablation reduced the risk of death and heart failure (HF) hospitalization in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and HF by 40%. OBJECTIVES The study aimed to assess the generalizability of CASTLE-AF to routine clinical practice. METHODS Using a large US administrative database, we identified 289,831 patients with AF and HF treated with ablation (N=7,465) or medical therapy alone (N=282,366) from 1/1/2008-8/31/2018. Patients were divided into three groups based on trial eligibility (1) eligible for CASTLE-AF; (2) failing to meet the inclusion criterion; and (3) meeting ≥1 of the exclusion criteria. Propensity score overlap weighting was used to balance ablated and drug-treated patients on 90 baseline characteristics. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to compare ablation to medical therapy for the primary outcome, a composite endpoint of all-cause mortality and HF hospitalization. RESULTS Only 7.8% of patients would have been eligible for the trial, 91.0% failed to meet the trial inclusion criteria, and 15.5% met the exclusion criteria. Ablation was associated with a lower risk of the primary outcome in the overall cohort (hazard ratio [HR] 0.81 [0.76-0.87], p less then 0.001), in the trial-eligible cohort (HR 0.82 [0.70-0.96], p=0.01), and in patients who failed to meet inclusion criteria (HR 0.79 [0.73-0.86], p less then 0.001), but not in patients who met exclusion criteria (HR 0.97 [0.81-1.17]). The relative risk reduction was consistent regardless of whether patients had HFrEF. CONCLUSIONS The benefit associated with ablation appears to be more modest in practice than that reported in the CASTLE-AF trial. We investigated the effects of Kalach 360 SL (KL), Glyphosate (G)-based herbicide, on bone tissue in different groups of female Wistar rats. Group 1 (n = 6) received a standard diet and served as a control, groups 2 and 3 (n = 6 each) received 0.07 ml (D1 126 mg/Kg) and 0.175 ml (D2 315 mg/Kg) of KL dissolved in the water for 60 days. The plasma was used to examine the metabolic balance markers (calcium, phosphorus, phosphatase alkaline (PAL), and vitamin D (vit D) and hormonal status (oestrogen and thyroid hormones). As a result, sub-chronic exposure to KL induced a perturbation of bone metabolism (calcium and phosphorus) and hormonal status disturbance. METHODS We looked for CRTC1/3-MAML2 fusions and gene alterations in the EGFR, RAS family (KRAS, HRAS, and NRAS), PIK3CA, BRAF, and AKT1 in 101 ****cases. We also examined mutations in TP53. RESULTS CRTC1/3-MAML2 fusions were found in 62.4% of the cases. KRAS, HRAS, and PIK3CA mutations were detected in 6.9%, 2.0%, and 6.9%, respectively, but other EGFR pathway genes were not mutated. In total, gene mutations (RAS/PIK3CA) in the EGFR pathway were detected in 14.9% of the cases.TP53 mutations were found in 20.8%. CRTC1/3-MAML2 fusions were associated with a better prognosis and RAS/PIK3CA mutations a worse prognosis of the patients, respectively, and both were selected as independent prognostic factors for the overall survival of the patients. Numerosas sociedades ginecológicas recomiendan efectuar una salpingectomía profiláctica (u oportunista) en el momento de una cirugía ginecológica en determinadas mujeres, y esta conducta está ampliamente difundida. Sin embargo, no se ha analizado la realización de la salpingectomía durante cirugías no ginecológicas como forma de prevención primaria del carcinoma ovárico. MÉTODOS Determinar si la salpingectomía profiláctica con intención de reducir el riesgo de desarrollar cáncer de ovario sería aceptada y podría llevarse a cabo durante una colecistectomía laparoscópica electiva. Se reclutaron mujeres ≥ 45 años de edad programadas para colecistectomía laparoscópica electiva. A todas ellas se les aconsejó y ofreció la realización de una salpingectomía bilateral profiláctica en el momento de su colecistectomía. Las variables analizadas fueron la tasa de realización de la salpingectomía, la duración y las etapas quirúrgicos para efectuar este procedimiento, y las complicaciones. RESULTADOS La aceptación de la salpingectomía fue aproximadamente del 60%. La salpingectomía se realizó en 98 de 105 colecistectomías laparoscópicas (93%) y no se pudo realizar en 7 pacientes (7%) por escasa visibilidad o adherencias. La mediana del tiempo quirúrgico adicional fue de 13 (rango 4-45) minutos. No hubo complicaciones atribuibles a la salpingectomía. Disentangling effects of discrepancy and disturbance on sleep EEG could help target research on the consequences and treatments of different sleep phenotypes. We therefore categorized participants in a cohort study including 2,850 men (average age = 76 years, standard deviation = 5.5) into four groups using median splits on actigraphic and self-reported sleep efficiency (SE). We compared spectral power between these groups in 1-Hz bins up to 24 Hz. Compared with the concordant-high SE group (a) the group with high actigraphic and low self-reported SE had higher spectral power from 11-15 Hz across the night; (b) both groups with low actigraphic SE had higher power across the 15-24 Hz range, predominantly in early cycles, and greater slow frequency power in later cycles. These findings suggest that perceived wakefulness undetected by actigraphy may result from or drive activity corresponding to spindles. We also found, consistent with hyperarousal models, that low SE detectable via actigraphy was related to higher frequency power in the beta range; actigraph-measured inefficiency was also associated with later slow oscillations, potentially representing attempts to dissipate homeostatic drive elevated from earlier hyperarousal. We analyzed functionally all (six) relevant homologs of S. meliloti 1021 using Escherichia coli K-12 as a host and found that five of them are high-affinity transporters for xanthine (SmLL9), uric acid (SmLL8, SmLL9, SmX28), adenine (SmVC3, SmYE1), guanine (SmVC3) or hypoxanthine (SmVC3). Detailed analysis of substrate profiles showed that two of these transporters display enlarged specificity (SmLL9, SmVC3). SmLL9 is closely related in sequence with the xanthine-specific XanQ of E. coli. We subjected SmLL9 to rationally designed site-directed mutagenesis and found that the role of key binding-site residues of XanQ is conserved in SmLL9 whereas a single amino-acid change (S93N) converts the xanthine/uric-acid transporter SmLL9 to a xanthine-preferring variant, due to disruption of an essential hydrogen bond with the C8 oxygen of uric acid. The results highlight the presence of several different purine nucleobase transporters in S. meliloti and imply that purine transport might be important in nodule symbiosis involving S. meliloti. All rights reserved.The purpose of this study was to describe the distinct regional distribution patterns of expression of the α7 and α4 subunits of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) and their left-right lateralisation in the rat hippocampus during the first 2 weeks of postnatal (P) development. Eighteen male pups were randomly divided into three groups P0, P7, and P14. After removing the newborn brains, real-time polymerase chain reaction, western blot, and immunohistochemistry techniques were used to evaluate expression of the receptors. Results indicated that the expression profile of these receptors were time- and spatially dependent. A significant increase was observed in the distribution of α7 and α4 nAChR subunits in the developing rat hippocampus from P0 to P7 (p  less then  .001); however, there was a significant decrease from P7 to P14 (p  less then  .05). As a spatial effect, the highest optical density (OD) was observed in the CA3 and CA2 regions of the hippocampus, while the lowest OD was in the dentate gyrus.

In most examples the reactive group and the directing group are close to each other and/or the linker between the directing group is very rigid. Achieving control over the regioselectivity using a remote directing group with a flexible linker is significantly more challenging due to the large conformational freedom of such substrates. Herein, we report the redesign of a supramolecular Rh-bisphosphite hydroformylation catalyst containing a neutral carboxylate receptor (DIM pocket) with a larger distance between the phosphite metal binding moieties and the DIM pocket. For the first time regioselective conversion of internal and terminal alkenes containing a remote carboxylate directing group is demonstrated. For carboxylate substrates that possess an internal double bond at the Δ-9 position regioselectivity is observed. Studies of people with insomnia, in whom both sleep disturbances and discrepancy are common, suggest disturbances and discrepancy reflect differences in the sleeping brain's activity measurable using spectral electroencephalogram (EEG). Disentangling effects of discrepancy and disturbance on sleep EEG could help target research on the consequences and treatments of different sleep phenotypes. We therefore categorized participants in a cohort study including 2,850 men (average age = 76 years, standard deviation = 5.5) into four groups using median splits on actigraphic and self-reported sleep efficiency (SE). We compared spectral power between these groups in 1-Hz bins up to 24 Hz. Compared with the concordant-high SE group (a) the group with high actigraphic and low self-reported SE had higher spectral power from 11-15 Hz across the night; (b) both groups with low actigraphic SE had higher power across the 15-24 Hz range, predominantly in early cycles, and greater slow frequency power in later cycles. These findings suggest that perceived wakefulness undetected by actigraphy may result from or drive activity corresponding to spindles. We also found, consistent with hyperarousal models, that low SE detectable via actigraphy was related to higher frequency power in the beta range; actigraph-measured inefficiency was also associated with later slow oscillations, potentially representing attempts to dissipate homeostatic drive elevated from earlier hyperarousal.
