However, less is known regarding the potential benefits of circRNAs as novel diagnostic and treatment biomarkers for HF. In the present study, we summarize the current developments and achievements associated with the use of circRNAs as HF biomarkers. In the present study, we evaluated the antitumor activity of shikonin in human colon cancer cells and the therapeutic effect on a xenograft mouse model. The results demonstrated that shikonin had a remarkable antitumor potency both in vitro and in vivo. We measured walking speed, trajectory efficiency (direct route over taken route) and goal fixations (proportion of visual fixations toward the goal area). We calculated the change in walking speed for navigation, given that they are involved in visual attention, sensory integration and encoding of space. In addition, FAD- and SAD-EVs affected calcium dynamics in a cortical organoid model. Our findings indicate that the phenotype of systemic AD-EVs is differentially defined by the etiopathology of the disease (SAD or FAD), which results in a differential alteration of the NVU cells implied in neurodegeneration.

  • Of the eight most common songbird species observed in our study area, the Eurasian Skylark and the Common Starling had the clearest positive correlations with grazer density, while the Blackbird showed a negative correlation. Skylarks and Starlings in our study area thus seem to profit from year-round natural grazing by a mixed group of horses and cattle.Studies evaluating the health status and characteristics of free-ranging wildlife populations are scarce or absent for most species. Saurian health assessments are usually performed in species that have conservation issues or that are kept in captivity. The Berthold's bush anole (Polychrus guturossus) is one of eight species belonging to the genus Polychrus, the only representative of the family Polychrotidae. Only a handful of studies have been reported concerning these lizard's morphological variation, ecology, and natural history, probably because P. gutturosus is a canopy dweller and it can be difficult to locate individuals. It is believed that deforestation and habitat modification could pose a threat for this species, although to date no health assessment has been done. The aim of this study was to generate health baseline data on P. gutturosus. Forty Berthold's bush anoles (20 males and 20 females) were sampled at the Pacific versant in Costa Rica, where physical examination, skin and cloacal temperates in health status due to anthropogenic causes or natural disturbances.
    Banana juice is becoming a popular beverage in Japan and the number of soft-drink stands or shops that take great care and pride in the quality of their products has been increasing. This study aims to measure the scent of banana juice from different brands using the electronic (e-) nose FF-2A in order to identify the characteristics, time-related changes, and the differences among them.

    We standardized the scent value of banana juice measured using FF-2A and determined the absolute value in three different shops. We compared the similarities in samples from each shop with axis data created using standardized measurement. With FF-2A we identified the scent common to all banana juice samples from the composite scent and numerically showed the similarity to the reference gas.

    The juices from each shop had their own characteristics and we were able to identify the difference between some of these. The response of FF-2A varied according to the increase/decrease in the number of characteristic molecules measured by GC-MS such as overtime fluctuations in the gas. These data were shown along with the differences between the various banana juices.

The effects of reversine on bile duct cancer, cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), a lethal cancer in Northeastern Thailand, were investigated. This study reports that reversine inhibited cell proliferation of CCA cell lines in dose- and time-dependent manners but had less inhibitory effect on an immortalized cholangiocyte cell line. Reversine also triggered apoptotic cell death by decreasing anti-apoptotic proteins, Bcl-XL and Mcl-1, increasing Bax pro-apoptotic protein and activating caspase-3 activity. Moreover, reversine induced autophagic cell death by increasing LC3-II and Beclin 1 while decreasing p62. Reversine activated autophagy via the AKT signaling pathway. Our study, conducted in 2018, assessed the content and transfer of lead in the soil-root-plant system in the high Andean grasslands in a geographical area near the metallurgical complex of La Oroya. Lead levels were measured in 120 samples of top soil (0-20 cm), roots, and grass shoots by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. No significant differences were found between the soil pH, organic matter content, and lead among the samples evaluated (P > 0.05). Mean Pb concentrations decreased in the order of soil > root > shoot (P less then 0.01) (212.36 ± 38.40, 154.65 ± 52.85 and 19.71 ± 2.81 mg/kg, respectively). The soil-to-root Pb bioconcentration factor, root-to-shoot translocation factor, and soil-to-shoot bioaccumulation factor values were 0.74 ± 0.26, 0.14 ± 0.06 and 0.10 ± 0.03, respectively. Lead in the soil was 3.03 times higher than the maximum limit for agricultural soil, and was 1.97 times higher than the value limit for fodder. Our findings are important and show that soils and pasture in this geographical area have high Pb levels due to metallurgical emissions that have been occurring since 1922. Such pollution negatively impacts health and the socio-economic status of the exposed populations.
    Oral cancer progresses from hyperplastic epithelial lesions through dysplasia to invasive carcinoma. The critical needs in oral cancer treatment are expanding our knowledge of malignant tumour progression and the development of useful approaches to prevent dysplastic lesions. This study was designed to gain insights into the underlying metabolic transformations that occur during the process of oral carcinogenesis.

    We used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in conjunction with multivariate statistical techniques to observe alterations in serum metabolites in a 4-Nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO)-induced rat tongue carcinogenesis model. Thirty-eight male rats were randomly divided into two groups, including the 4NQO-induced model group of 30 rats and the healthy control group of five rats. Animals were sacrificed at weeks 9, 13, 20, 24, and 32, post-4NQO treatment. Tissue samples were collected for histopathological examinations and blood samples were collected for metabolomic analysis. Partial least squares discriminate analysis (PLS-DA) models generated from GC-MS metabolic profile data showed robust discrimination from rats with oral premalignant and malignant lesions induced by 4NQO, and normal controls.

According to the results, using the hybrid ML method could successfully improve the prediction accuracy.The constantly and rapidly increasing amount of the biological data gained from many different high-throughput experiments opens up new possibilities for data- and model-driven inference. Yet, alongside, emerges a problem of risks related to data integration techniques. The latter are not so widely taken account of. Especially, the approaches based on the flux balance analysis (FBA) are sensitive to the structure of a metabolic network for which the low-entropy clusters can prevent the inference from the activity of the metabolic reactions. In the following article, we set forth problems that may arise during the integration of metabolomic data with gene expression datasets. We analyze common pitfalls, provide their possible solutions, and exemplify them by a case study of the renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Using the proposed approach we provide a metabolic description of the known morphological RCC subtypes and suggest a possible existence of the poor-prognosis cluster of patients, which are commonly characterized by the low activity of the drug transporting enzymes crucial in the chemotherapy. This discovery suits and extends the already known poor-prognosis characteristics of RCC. Finally, the goal of this work is also to point out the problem that arises from the integration of high-throughput data with the inherently nonuniform, manually curated low-throughput data. Standardised timings from disease onset (0) to death (1) among Singapore patients with ALS were measured.

We report two cases of salivary gland tumors with unique histological and molecular findings, which have not been documented previously. Focally, glandular structures with intraluminal mucin and perivascular pseudorosette-like configurations were identified. Tumor cells had eosinophilic to clear cytoplasm, and showed mild nuclear atypia. They were positive for pancytokeratin and negative for S-100, p63, c-KIT, androgen receptor, and neuroendocrine markers. Multiple foci of capsular or lymphovascular invasion were identified, but the Ki-67 labeling index was low ( less then 5%). Fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed concurrent alterations of MAML2 and EWSR1 gene. Further investigations with a larger number of cases with similar histological and molecular features will accurately classify this tumor.
    Patients with hereditary diffuse gastric cancer often undergo prophylactic gastrectomy to minimize cancer risk. Because intramucosal poorly cohesive carcinomas in this setting are typically not grossly visible, many pathologists assess the entire gastrectomy specimen microscopically. With 150 or more slides per case, this is a major time burden for pathologists. This study utilizes deep learning methods to analyze digitized slides and detect regions of carcinoma.

    Prophylactic gastrectomy specimens from seven patients with germline CDH1 mutations were analyzed (five for training/validation and two for testing, with a total of 133 tumor foci). All hematoxylin and eosin slides containing cancer foci were digitally scanned, and patches of size 256×256 pixels were randomly extracted from regions of cancer as well as from regions of normal background tissue, resulting in 15,851 images for training/validation and 970 images for testing. A model with DenseNet-169 architecture was trained for 150 epochs, then evaluated on images from the test set. External validation was conducted on 814 images scanned at an outside institution.

    On individual patches, the trained model achieved a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) area under the curve (AUC) of 0.9986. This enabled it to maintain a sensitivity of 90% with a false-positive rate of less than 0.1%. On the external validation dataset, the model achieved a similar ROC AUC of 0.9984. On whole slide images, the network detected 100% of tumor foci and correctly eliminated an average of 99.9% of the non-cancer slide area from consideration.

However, their clonal and evolutional relationship remains unclear. We report a case of early-stage EGFR-mutated LUAD with a focal concomitant EGFR/ALK alteration. A 63-year-old male underwent lobectomy to remove a 1.9-cm-sized lung nodule, which was diagnosed with EGFR-mutated LUAD. ALK immunohistochemistry (IHC) showed focal positivity within the part of the tumor characterized by lepidic pattern, also confirmed by fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH). Targeted next-generation sequencing was performed separately on the ALK IHC/FISH-positive and -negative areas. EGFR L833V/L858R mutations were detected in both areas, whereas EML4 (echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like 4)-ALK translocations was confirmed only in the ALK IHC/FISH-positive area, suggesting the divergence of an EGFR/ALK co-altered subclone from the original EGFR-mutant clone. Our study suggests that concurrent alterations of EGFR and ALK can arise via divergent tumor evolution, even in the relatively early phases of tumorigenesis.
    Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is a serious complication of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The most important predictor of CIN is renal function before PCI. Serum creatinine (SCr) is a commonly used biomarker of renal function, but an elevation in SCr lags behind the onset of kidney injury and is not viable for early detection of CIN after PCI. Our primary objective was to investigate whether preoperative cystatin C (CysC) before PCI was an early predictor of postoperative CIN. The secondary objective was to evaluate associations between preoperative CysC and renal biomarkers.

    From December 2014 to December 2015, 341 patients with normal renal function were enrolled into the study at our medical centre. All patients were apportioned to normal CysC (≤ 1.03 mg/L) or high CysC (> 1.03 mg/L) groups before PCI and were hydrated from four hours prior to PCI to 24 hours after it. Renal function was monitored at 48 hours after PCI. Clinical parameters were recorded before and after PCI.

  • Cellular surface recognition and behavior are driven by a host of physical and chemical features which have been exploited to influence particle-cell interactions. Mechanical and topographical cues define the physical milieu which plays an important role in defining a range of cellular activities such as material recognition, adhesion, and migration through cytoskeletal organization and signaling. In order to elucidate the effect of local mechanical and topographical features generated by the adsorption of particles to an underlying surface on primary human monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM), a series of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) particles with differing rigidity are self-assembled to form a defined particle-decorated surface. Assembly of particle-decorated surfaces is facilitated by modification of the underlying glass to possess a positive charge through functionalization using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) or coating with poly(L-lysine) (PLL). MDMs are noted to preferentially remove particles with higher degrees of crosslinking (stiffer) than those with lower degrees of crosslinking (softer). Alterations to the surface density of particles enabled a greater area of the particle-decorated surface to be cleared. Uniquely, the impact of particle adsorption is evinced to have a direct impact on topographical recognition of the surface, suggesting a novel approach for controllably affecting cell-surface recognition and response.
    To explore knowledge and attitude about Covid-19, among Syrian refugee mothers in the Governorate of Irbid, where the first outbreak of Covid-19 in Jordan took place.

    This is a cross-section study among Syrian refugee mothers, who were pregnant or having had children. Data was collected through an online questionnaire. The survey link was distributed in April 2020, through the social network's messaging services Facebook and WhatsApp. Contact information was obtained from local community centres and non-governmental organisations in the town of Irbid, the north of Jordan.

    In total, 389 Syrian refugee mothers participated in the study. It showed that 66% of mother's access information regarding Covid-19. The main sources of information were Facebook 87%, WhatsApp 69%, television 53%, while 21% indicated that they access professional databases or government websites. In general, Syrian refugee mothers were knowledgeable about Covid-19 transmission and prevention. However, they lacked adequate knowledge about transmission of Covid-19 between the mother and the child, and smoking risks associated with Covid-19.

The knowledge about the behavior of these unique materials revels a new area of research and would certainly help to find out the solution for ever-increasing environmental issues.The delivery of bio-active molecules through the skin is challenging given the complex structure of its outer layer, the stratum corneum. Here we explore the possibility to encapsulate natural compounds into nanocarriers containing permeation enhancers that can affect the fluidity of the stratum corneum lipids. This approach is expected to facilitate dermal or transdermal release. For this purpose, the application of bile salts, which are natural surfactants involved in vivo in lipid digestion, was exploited. Bile salts were added to lipid liquid crystalline nanoparticles (NPs) made of monoolein for antioxidant topical delivery. Monoolein self-assembly behaviour in water was affected by the presence of bile salts molecules, giving a transition from a bicontinuous cubic to unilamellar vesicles dispersion. By adding oleic acid (OA), the change of curvature in the system led to a reverse hexagonal phase. The morphology, structure and size of the nanocarriers was investigated before the nanoparticles were loaded with catechin, a natural antioxidant occurring in plants and food. The encapsulation did not affect significantly the formulation phase behaviour. The formulation loaded with bile salts and catechin was thereafter tested in vitro on the skin from new-born pig. The results for two different lipid formulations without bile salts were compared under the same experimental conditions and with the same antioxidant. The formulation with bile salts showed the best performance, allowing a superior permeation of catechin in the different skin layers in comparison with formulations without bile salt.The injectable in-situ forming electroconductive hydrogels with antioxidant activity are promising candidates for nerve tissue engineering. In this study, we synthesized and developed a gelatin-graft-polyaniline/periodate-oxidized alginate hydrogel through the introduction of branched polyethylenimine (PEI) to improve the rheological properties. Moreover, antioxidant property, electroconductivity and the effect of external electrical stimulus on the nerve cell behavior were investigated. The results showed that by increasing the polyaniline content, the antioxidant activity, pore sizes, and swelling ratio of the hydrogel were increased, while the crosslinking density and storage modulus were decreased. The introduction of PEI accelerated the gelation time, decreased swelling ratio and pore size, and increased the storage modulus and crosslinking density. Cell studies showed that all formulations had supported the viability of P19 embryonic carcinoma cells with the neuritis elongation in the presence of the external electrical-stimulus. Gene expression of the neuronal markers, including Nestin, Pax-6, and β-tubulin III, was increased in all hydrogels; In addition, electrical stimulation significantly elevated the expression of these markers in high polyaniline-content hydrogel compared to the polyaniline-free hydrogel. Therefore, we aimed to study the effect of FGF-8b on the proliferation and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (****), which have tremendous potential for therapeutic use of cell-based therapy. Rat adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs) and muscle progenitor cells (****) were isolated and cultured in growth medium and various types of differentiation medium (osteogenic, chondrogenic, adipogenic, tenogenic, and myogenic medium) with or without FGF-8b supplementation. We found that FGF-8b induced robust proliferation regardless of culture medium. Genes related to limb development were upregulated in ADSCs by FGF-8b supplementation. Moreover, FGF-8b enhanced chondrogenic differentiation and suppressed adipogenic and tenogenic differentiation in ADSCs. Osteogenic differentiation was not affected by FGF-8b supplementation. FGF-8b was found to enhance myofiber formation in rat ****.     Diabetes mellitus is highly prevalent among critical cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with poor outcomes. This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients with diabetes, admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the southern region of Bangladesh.

    Epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, treatments, complications, and clinical outcomes data were extracted from electronic medical records of 168 COVID-19 patients admitted into ICU of two COVID-19 dedicated hospitals of Chattogram, Bangladesh and compared between diabetes (n=88) and non-diabetes (n=80) groups.

    The prevalence of diabetes was high among 51-70 years old patients. Rat adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs) and muscle progenitor cells (MPCs) were isolated and cultured in growth medium and various types of differentiation medium (osteogenic, chondrogenic, adipogenic, tenogenic, and myogenic medium) with or without FGF-8b supplementation. We found that FGF-8b induced robust proliferation regardless of culture medium. Genes related to limb development were upregulated in ADSCs by FGF-8b supplementation. Moreover, FGF-8b enhanced chondrogenic differentiation and suppressed adipogenic and tenogenic differentiation in ADSCs. Osteogenic differentiation was not affected by FGF-8b supplementation. FGF-8b was found to enhance myofiber formation in rat MPCs. Epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, treatments, complications, and clinical outcomes data were extracted from electronic medical records of 168 COVID-19 patients admitted into ICU of two COVID-19 dedicated hospitals of Chattogram, Bangladesh and compared between diabetes (n=88) and non-diabetes (n=80) groups. The prevalence of diabetes was high among 51-70 years old patients. Internet of Things (IoT) technologies can play a crucial role during the time of crisis and they can provide a more holistic view of the reasons that govern the outbreak of a contagious disease. The understanding of COVID-19 will be enriched by the analysis of data related to the phenomena, and this data can be collected using IoT sensors. In this paper, we show an integrated solution based on IoT technologies that can serve as opportunistic health data acquisition agents for combating the pandemic of COVID-19, named CIoTVID. The platform is composed of four layers-data acquisition, data aggregation, machine intelligence and services, within the solution. To demonstrate its validity, the solution has been tested with a use case based on creating a classifier of medical conditions using real data of voice, performing successfully. The layer of data aggregation is particularly relevant in this kind of solution as the data coming from medical devices has a very different nature to that coming from electronic sensors. Due to the adaptability of the platform to heterogeneous data and volumes of data; individuals, policymakers, and clinics could benefit from it to fight the propagation of the pandemic.The outbreak of the influenza virus (H1N1) has symptoms such as coughing, fever, and a sore throat, and due to its high contagious power, it is fatal to humans. The DNA 4WJ was constructed to have the hemagglutinin aptamer on the head group (recognition part); each of the two arms has four silver ions (signal amplification part), and the tail group has an amine group (anchor). This fabricated multifunctional DNA 4WJ can specifically and selectively bind to hemagglutinin. Moreover, the carboxyl-MoS2 provides an increase in the sensitivity of this biosensor. Carboxyl-MoS2 was immobilized using a linker on the electrode, followed by the immobilization of the multifunctional 4WJ on the electrode. The synthesis of carboxyl-MoS2 was confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and the surface of the electrode was confirmed by atomic force microscopy. When H1N1 was placed in the immobilized electrode, the presence of H1N1 was confirmed by electrochemical analysis (cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). Through selectivity tests, it was also possible to determine whether this sensor responds specifically and selectively to H1N1. Simultaneous application of the two agents in the field cannot be recommended; however, NrEO might be considered as the PPT post-treatment for reducing harmful effects of herbicide residues in the soil on non-target plants.

Patients with B-thalassemia major induced osteoporosis will undergo baseline assessment of the bone densitometry by bone density(DEXA) scan as a standard of care by the radiology department, then a blood test for bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and type-1 collagen telopeptide will be measured by the chemistry laboratory.Patients with B-thalassemia major induced osteoporosis, who are 18 years of age or more and willing to participate in the study will be enrolled after consenting by the primary investigator in hematology outpatient clinics. Patients with osteoporosis will receive 1 of the 2 medications; at the end of the year, DEXA scan will be done to compare the response of the 2 medications.     Felty syndrome is a rare and life-threatening type of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

    A patient with RA had skin rash and subcutaneous hemorrhage, with a significant decrease in blood hemoglobin (Hb), white blood cell count (WBC), and blood platelet count (BPC).

    The patient had a history of RA, splenomegaly, decreased Hb, WBC, BPC, and normal immunological indexes, combined with a series of bone marrow related tests and genetic tests.

    She was given high-doses of glucocorticoids intravenously, followed by oral prednisone and cyclosporine maintenance therapy.

    Her symptoms were resolved within 2 weeks after the start of immunosuppression. After 2 weeks of discharge, the Hb, WBC, ****basically returned to normal, and prednisone gradually decreased.

Declining vaccine acceptance (from >70% in March to less then 50% in October) with demographic, socioeconomic, and partisan divides was observed. Perceived risk, concerns over vaccine safety and effectiveness, doctors' recommendations, and inoculation history were common factors. Impacts of regional infection rates, gender, and personal COVID-19 experience were inconclusive. Unique COVID-19 factors included political party orientation, doubts toward expedited development/approval process, and perceived political interference. Many receptive participants preferred to wait until others have taken the vaccine; mandates could increase resistance. Survey wording and answer options showed influence on responses.     Our aim was to investigate the characteristics, treatment and prognosis of patients with myocardial infarction (MI) treated outside a cardiology department (CD), compared with MI patients treated at a CD.

    A cohort of 1310 patients diagnosed with MI at eight Swedish hospitals in 2011 were included in this observational study. Patients were followed regarding all-cause mortality until 2018.

    A total of 235 patients, exclusively treated outside CDs, were identified. These patients had more non-cardiac comorbidities, were older (mean age 83.7 vs. 73.1 years) and had less often type 1 MIs (33.2% vs. 74.2%), in comparison with the CD patients. Validity was evaluated by testing the tools against a 24-h urine sodium excretion (24 h Uri-Na) and a 3-day food record, and this at individual and group levels (n = 164). The intra-class coefficients (ICC) values for the test-retest of the DSQ, the FFQ-Na and the two questionnaires combined were 0.73, 0.97 and 0.98 respectively. Correlations of the FFQ-Na with the 24 h Uri-Na and the 3-day food record were 0.3 (p less then 0.001) and 0.35 (p less then 0.001) respectively. The DSQ showed no significant correlation with the reference measures.
