(vs monomicrobial) ABC infection.Photodynamic therapy involves the concomitant action of three components, light with an appropriate wavelength, molecular oxygen, and a molecule, able to absorb an electromagnetic radiation, called photosensitizer (PS). A fundamental aspect is the bioavailability of the PS that is directly related to some physicochemical properties of the PS itself as it should feature a certain degree of lipophilicity to easily cross the cell membrane, however, at the same time, should be sufficiently water-soluble to navigate in the bloodstream. Consequently, the use of a system for drug delivery becomes essential when photosensitizers with a high degree of lipophilicity are considered. In this work, we present three different drug delivery systems, microemulsions, emulsions and liposomes all capable of carrying a PS belonging to the porphyrin family the tetraphenyl porphyrin (TPP) and the 4-hydroxyphenyl porphyrin (THPP), which show a relevant different degree of lipophilicity. A series of microemulsions (ME) and emulsions (E) were prepared, among which two formulations, one for THPP and one for TPP, have been chosen. The stability of these two carriers was monitored over time and under various temperature conditions. With the same criteria, two liposomal formulations have been also identified and analyzed. The four formulations mentioned above (one ME, one E and two liposomes) have been tested on SKOV3 tumor cell line comparing the photodynamic activity of the porphyrin formulations versus the aqueous/organic (DMSO) solution of the same two PSs. The results show that all the formulations have proved to be excellent carriers and that the liposomal formulation enhance the photodynamic efficacy of both porphyrins.
This study aimed to examine the association between eating speed and overweight in Chinese schoolchildren.
In all, 664 schoolchildren (10-12years) from three primary schools participated in this study in China. Their height and body weight were measured. Information about eating speed and other lifestyle behaviors were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for overweight.
Data from 629 students were analyzed. 26.2% of participants reported they were eating fast. The prevalence of overweight (including obesity) was 22.9%, and the mean of sleep duration was 9.69 (SD = 0.63) hours (Table 1). In the multiple linear regression analysis, slower eating speed was independently associated with lower BMI (B = -0.70, 95% CI -1.26 to -0.14) and TG (B = -0.16, 95% CI -0.28 to -0.04). In addition, participants who ate fast were more likely to be overweight (OR 1.81, 95% CI 1.19-2.75) after adjusting for potential confounding factors.
This study indicates that eating fast is associated with overweight among Chinese school children.

Currently, reports from existing endemic areas such as Nepal, Iran, Brazil, India, Sudan and Afghanistan, as well as newly affected countries such as Peru, Bolivia and Somalia indicate concerns of chemoresistance to the classical antimonial treatment. As a result, effective antileishmanial agents which are safe and affordable are urgently needed. Natural products from both flora and fauna have contributed immensely to chemotherapeutics and serve as vital sources of new chemical agents. This review focuses on a systematic cross-sectional view of all characterized anti-leishmanial compounds from natural sources over the last decade. Furthermore, IC50/EC50, cytotoxicity and suggested mechanisms of action of some of these natural products are provided. Here, formulations, relevant preparations methods, and characteristics of nano-TCM were introduced. In addition, the main excellent performances of nano-TCM were clearly elaborated. What is more, the review was intended to address the studies committed to application of nanotechnology in TCM over the years, including development of Chinese medicine active ingredients, complete TCM, and Chinese herbal compounds based on nanotechnology. Finally, this review discussed the safety of nano-TCM and presented future development trends in the way to realize the modernization of TCM. Overall, using the emerging nanotechnology in TCM is promising to promote progress of TCM in international platform. Recent researches on modernization of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) urged by nanotechnology are introduced, and formulations, advantages, and applications of nano-TCM are reviewed to provide strong proofs.
We previously found that atorvastatin (ATV) enhanced mesenchymal stem cells (****) migration, by a yet unknown mechanism. CXC chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) is critical to cell migration and regulated by microRNA-146a (miR-146a). Therefore, this study aimed to assess whether ATV ameliorates **** migration through miR-146a/CXCR4 signaling.
Expression of CXCR4 was evaluated by flow cytometry. Expression of miR-146a was examined by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. A transwell system was used to assess the migration ability of ****. Recruitment of systematically delivered **** to the infarcted heart was evaluated in Sprague-Dawley rats with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Nanfeng mandarins (Citrus reticulata Blanco cv. Kinokuni), Xunwu mandarins (Citrus reticulata Blanco), Yangshuo kumquats (Citrus japonica Thunb) and physiologically dropped navel oranges (Citrus sinensis Osbeck cv. Newhall) were used as materials to extract peel essential oils (EOs) via hydrodistillation. The chemical composition, and antibacterial and antioxidant activities of the EOs were investigated. GC-MS analysis showed that monoterpene hydrocarbons were the major components and limonene was the predominate compound for all citrus EOs. The antibacterial testing of EOs against five different bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhimurium) was carried out using the filter paper method and the broth microdilution method. Kumquat EO had the best inhibitory effect on B. subtilis, E. coli and S. typhimurium with MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) values of 1.56, 1.56 and 6.25 µL/mL, respectively. All citrus EOs showed the antioxidant activity of scavenging DPPH and ABTS free radicals in a dose-dependent manner. Nanfeng mandarin EO presented the best antioxidant activity, with IC50 values of 15.20 mg/mL for the DPPH assay and 0.80 mg/mL for the ABTS assay. The results also showed that the antibacterial activities of EOs might not be related to their antioxidant activities.The use of lipid nanoparticles as biodegradable shells for controlled drug delivery shows promise as a more effective and targeted tumor treatment than traditional treatment methods. Although the combination of target therapy with nanotechnology created new hope for cancer treatment, methodological issues during in vitro validation of nanovehicles slowed their application. In the current work, the effect of methotrexate (MTX) encapsulated in different matrices was evaluated in a dynamic microfluidic platform. Effects on the viability of osteosarcoma cells in the presence of recirculation of cell media, free MTX and two types of blank and drug-containing nanoparticles were successfully assessed in different tumor-mimicking microenvironments. Encapsulated MTX was more effective than the equal dose free drug treatment, as cell death significantly increased under the recirculation of both types of drug-loaded nanoparticles in all concentrations. In fact, MTX-nanoparticles reduced cell population 50 times more than the free drug when 150-µM drug dose was recirculated. Moreover, when compared to the equivalent free drug dose recirculation, cell number was reduced 60 and 100 points more under recirculation of each nanoparticle with a 15-µM drug concentration. Thus, the results obtained with the microfluidic model present MTX-lipid nanoparticles as a promising and more effective therapy for pediatric osteosarcoma treatment than current treatment options.The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of social health and its association with resilience among older adults living alone excluded from the public care service due to their relatively good health. For this cross-sectional study, we surveyed older adults aged between 65 and 80 years using questionnaires to measure the social health status and levels of resilience of the participants. Mitochondrial D-loop sequences were obtained from 179 individuals (hybrids of Bos taurus and B. indicus) sampled from nine different provinces. Fifty-one haplotypes, of which most were classified in haplogroup "I", were found across all nine populations. All sampled populations showed severely reduced degrees of genetic differentiation, and low nucleotide diversity was observed in populations from central Thailand. Populations that originated from adjacent geographical areas tended to show high gene flow, as revealed by patterns of weak network structuring. Mismatch distribution analysis was suggestive of a stable population, with the recent occurrence of a slight expansion event. The results provide insights into the origins and the genetic relationships among local Thai cattle breeds and will be useful for guiding management of cattle breeding in Thailand.Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are reported to be associated with many diseases, including autoimmune diseases. In rheumatoid arthritis (RA), about 152 SNPs are reported to account for ~15% of its heritability. These SNPs may result in the alteration of gene expression and may also affect the stability of mRNA, resulting in diseased protein. Therefore, in order to predict the underlying mechanism of these SNPs and identify novel therapeutic sites for the treatment of RA, several bioinformatics tools were used. The damaging effect of 23 non-synonymous SNPs on proteins using different tools suggested four SNPs, including rs2476601 in PTPN22, rs5029941 and rs2230926 in TNFAIP3, and rs34536443 in TYK2, to be the most damaging. In total, 42 of 76 RA-associated intronic SNPs were predicted to create or abolish potential splice sites. Moreover, the analysis of 11 RA-associated UTR SNPs indicated that only one SNP, rs1128334, located in 3'UTR of ETS1, caused functional pattern changes in BRD-BOX. For the identification of novel therapeutics sites to treat RA, extensive gene-gene interaction network interactive pathways were established, with the identification of 13 potential target sites for the development of RA drugs, including three novel target genes.

Finally, a multinomial regression model was used to predict the probability of using ABA as a biomarker. Blood ABA levels were significantly reduced in COPD patients and asthmatics compared to age- and gender-matched normal controls. However, PPAR-γ was elevated in COPD patients. Intriguingly, ABA was positively correlated with immune-regulatory factors and was negatively correlated with inflammatory markers, in COPD. Of note, ABA was increased in advanced COPD stages. The PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases were searched for the relevant articles from January 1, 2017 to August 28, 2020 and further screened for literature reviews on April 1, 2021. Pool proportions with 95% CIs for SVR12 were summarized with fixed/random effects models using Freeman-Tukey double arcsine transformation. Subgroup analysis was used to explore the source of heterogeneity. Thirty-six relevant publications were identified. For adolescents aged 12-17 years old, the pooled SVR12 and AE rate were 99.4% (95% CI 98.7-99.9) and 34.7% (95% CI 31.9-37.6). No one discontinued treatment due to drug intolerance. In addition, the SVR12 adolescents treated for 12 and 8/24 weeks were 99.3% (95% CI 98.4-99.9) and 100%, respectively. The pooled SVR12 rate, AEs, and SAEs for children younger than 12 years were 98.9% (95% CI 97.3-99.8), 51.6% (95% CI 47.0-56.2), and 1.1% (95% CI 0.4-2.5), respectively. Methods One hundred and eighty-nine IgAV-N patients over 14 years old were enrolled. The patients were divided into two groups by the optimum cut-off value calculated by ROC curve. The composite endpoints were defined as a 60% decline in estimate glomerular filtration rate (e-GFR), end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and/or death. Kaplan-Meier (K-M) analysis and multivariate Cox analysis were carried out to determine the predictors for renal outcomes. In order to eliminate the influence of different baseline data, a 12 propensity score (PS) match was performed to make the results comparable and convictive. Results The baseline data suggested that patients in low serum bilirubin group had significantly higher levels of systolic blood pressure, proteinuria, serum creatinine and crescent formation ratio and lower levels of serum albumin and hemoglobin. Renal survival analysis indicated that lower serum bilirubin levels were significantly correlated with a poorer prognosis. Multivariate Cox analysis demonstrated that the higher level of serum bilirubin was an independent protective factor for renal survival (HR, 0.172; 95% CI, 0.030-0.991; P = 0.049). After PS matching, the baseline characters of two groups had no statistical differences. Similar outcomes were demonstrated in K-M curve and the multivariate Cox analysis. BACKGROUND Lymphoma is a common cancer in dogs. While most dogs receiving chemotherapy experience remission, very few are cured, and median survival times are generally in the 12-month range. Novel approaches to treatment are unquestionably needed. The Inhibitor of Apoptosis Protein (IAP) family member survivin, which is one of the most commonly overexpressed proteins in human cancer, plays a key role in apoptosis resistance, a major cause of drug-resistant treatment failure. Survivin targeting therapies have shown promise preclinically; however, none have been evaluated in dogs to date. The goal of the current study was to determine the safety and pharmacodynamic effects of systemic administration of the anti-survivin locked nucleic acid antisense oligonucleotide EZN-3042 in dogs with lymphoma. RESULTS We performed a prospective phase-I clinical trial in dogs with biopsy-accessible peripheral nodal lymphoma. Eighteen dogs were treated with EZN-3042 as a 2-h IV infusion at 5 dose levels, from 3.25 to 8.25 mg/kg twice weekly for 3 treatments. No dose-limiting toxicities were encountered. Reduction in tumor survivin mRNA and protein were observed in 3 of 5 evaluable dogs at the 8.25 mg/kg dose cohort. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, reduced survivin expression was demonstrated in lymphoma tissues in the majority of dogs treated with EZN-3042 at 8.25 mg/kg twice weekly, which was associated with minimal adverse effects. The intervention specifically aimed to decrease providers' likelihood of expressing biases and negative stereotypes when interacting with patients of color in racially charged moments, such as when patients discuss past incidents of discrimination. Workshop exercises were informed by research on the importance of mindfulness and interracial contact involving reciprocal exchanges of vulnerability and responsiveness. Twenty-five medical student and recent graduate participants were randomized to a workshop iulness and interracial contact may be beneficial in reducing racial health disparities.BACKGROUND In the emergency setting of acute ischemic stroke, seizures have been reported in up to 4% of patients. In the absence of arterial occlusion, seizures may also cause abnormalities in CT perfusion in 78% of cases when the time window from onset to imaging is short. Both hyperperfusion and hypoperfusion in the postictal state have been described. Also, though rarely reported, postictal perfusion changes can be uni-hemispheric. In these cases, perfusion maps should be analyzed thoroughly, since perfusion reconstruction software relies heavily on a "normal" contralateral perfusion status. CASE PRESENTATION A 39-year-old man was found on the ground with a minor head injury. On admission, his reactions were generally slow, but there were no other neurological symptoms, and blood pressure was low. The patient had a history of primary generalized epilepsy and admitted to dropping off his anti-epileptic medication. He was transferred to the radiological department for imaging but shortly before began to expof CT perfusion maps and software reconstructions. Firearm violence may indirectly affect health among pregnant women living in neighborhoods where it is endemic. We used birth, death, emergency department, and hospitalization data from California from 2007-2011 to estimate the association between living in a neighborhood with high firearm violence and preterm delivery, and assessed whether there was mediation by diagnoses of pregnancy complications and health behaviors during pregnancy. We used an ensemble machine learning algorithm to predict the propensity for neighborhoods to be classified as high firearm violence. Risk differences (RD) for the total effect and stochastic direct and indirect effects were estimated using targeted maximum likelihood. Residence in high violence neighborhoods was associated with higher prevalence of preterm birth [RD = 0.46 (95% CI 0.13, 0.80)], infections [RD = 1.34 (95% CI -0.17, 2.86)], asthma [RD = 0.76 (95% CI 0.03, 1.48)], and substance use [RD=0.74 (95% CI 0.00, 1.47)]. Observations Coronavirus disease 2019 can cause a viral pneumonia with additional extrapulmonary manifestations and complications. A large proportion of patients have underlying cardiovascular disease and/or cardiac risk factors. Factors associated with mortality include male sex, advanced age, and presence of comorbidities including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, and cerebrovascular diseases. Acute cardiac injury determined by elevated high-sensitivity troponin levels is commonly observed in severe cases and is strongly associated with mortality. Acute respiratory distress syndrome is also strongly associated with mortality. Conclusions and Relevance Coronavirus disease 2019 is associated with a high inflammatory burden that can induce vascular inflammation, myocarditis, and cardiac arrhythmias. Design, Setting, and Participant This case report describes an otherwise healthy 53-year-old woman who tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to the cardiac care unit in March 2020 for acute myopericarditis with systolic dysfunction, confirmed on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, the week after onset of fever and dry cough due to COVID-19. Firearm violence may indirectly affect health among pregnant women living in neighborhoods where it is endemic. We used birth, death, emergency department, and hospitalization data from California from 2007-2011 to estimate the association between living in a neighborhood with high firearm violence and preterm delivery, and assessed whether there was mediation by diagnoses of pregnancy complications and health behaviors during pregnancy. We used an ensemble machine learning algorithm to predict the propensity for neighborhoods to be classified as high firearm violence. Risk differences (RD) for the total effect and stochastic direct and indirect effects were estimated using targeted maximum likelihood. Residence in high violence neighborhoods was associated with higher prevalence of preterm birth [RD = 0.46 (95% CI 0.13, 0.80)], infections [RD = 1.34 (95% CI -0.17, 2.86)], asthma [RD = 0.76 (95% CI 0.03, 1.48)], and substance use [RD=0.74 (95% CI 0.00, 1.47)]. The objective of this study was to characterize the transcriptome of the chorioallantois (CA) of mares with NP. The CA were collected from mares with confirmed NP based upon histopathology, microbiological culture and PCR for Amycolatopsis spp. Samples were collected from the margin of the NP lesion (NPL, n = 4) and grossly normal region (NPN, n = 4). Additionally, CA samples were collected from normal postpartum mares (Control; CRL, n = 4). Transcriptome analysis identified 2892 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in NPL vs. CRL and 2450 DEGs in NPL vs. NPN. Functional genomics analysis elucidated that inflammatory signaling, toll-like receptor signaling, inflammasome activation, chemotaxis, and apoptosis pathways are involved in NP. The increased leukocytic infiltration in NPL was associated with the upregulation of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP1, MMP3, and MMP8) and apoptosis-related genes, such as caspases (CASP3 and CASP7), which could explain placental separation associated with NP. Also, NP was associated with downregulation of several placenta-regulatory genes (ABCG2, GCM1, EPAS1, and NR3C1), angiogenesis-related genes (VEGFA, FLT1, KDR, and ANGPT2), and glucose transporter coding genes (GLUT1, GLUT10, and GLUT12), as well as upregulation of hypoxia-related genes (HIF1A and EGLN3), which could elucidate placental insufficiency accompanying NP. In conclusion, our findings revealed for the first time, the key regulators and mechanisms underlying placental inflammation, separation, and insufficiency during NP, which might lead to the development of efficacious therapies or diagnostic aids by targeting the key molecular pathways.
High blood pressure is an independent risk factor of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and is a major cause of disability and death. Managing a healthy lifestyle has been shown to reduce blood pressure and improve health outcomes. We aim to investigate the effectiveness of a lifestyle modification intervention program for lowering blood pressure in a rural area of Bangladesh.
A single-center cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT). The study will be conducted for 6 months, a total of 300 participants of age 30 to 75 years with 150 adults in each of the intervention and the control arms. The intervention arm will involve the delivery of a blended learning education program on lifestyle changes for the management of high blood pressure. The education program comprises evidence-based information with pictures, fact sheets, and published literature about the effects of high blood pressure on CVD development, increased physical activity, and the role of a healthy diet in blood pressure management. The control groseases by engaging community people.

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis is a rare interstitial lung disease characterized by accumulating surfactant materials in the alveoli. The autoimmune form is by far the most common in adults, while in the pediatric age group, the vast majority of cases are congenital. We report a case of an adolescent patient diagnosed with autoimmune pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, which is unusual in this age group.

Infertility is a widespread and often unexplained issue. Studying reproduction using C. elegans males offers insight into the influence of individual factors on male fertility in humans. We have created a collection of protocols to assess several aspects of C. elegans sperm quality, including number, size, rate of activation, and mitochondrial morphology. Studying sperm biology in a model system such as C. elegans allows access to the wealth of resources and techniques that have been optimized for that organism while providing valuable biological information that may be applicable to other systems. To enhance sensitivity in the region of interest, EIT with a novel offset arrangement of boundary electrodes is proposed to image a simulated frontal lobe hemorrhage and secondary ischemia. To cope with the ill-posed inverse problem, the L1 regularization method is developed during the reconstruction. In addition, the impact of noise with a signal-to-noise ratio of 56 dB is studied. Results Compared with the traditional uniform electrode arrangement, the results demonstrate that EIT with the proposed offset arrangement of electrodes is more advantageous for imaging frontal lobe disease. In addition to narrowing of the articular space, recent studies involving statistical shape analysis methods have suggested that specific bone shapes might be associated with the disease. We aim to investigate the feasibility of using the recently introduced framework of functional shapes (Fshape) to extract morphological features of OA that combine shape variability of articular surfaces of the tibia (or femur) together with the changes of the joint space. Approach Our study uses a dataset of three-dimensional cone-beam CT volumes of 17 knees without OA and 17 knees with OA. Each knee is then represented as an object (Fshape) consisting of a triangulated tibial (or femoral) articular surface and a map of joint space widths (JSWs) measured at the points of this surface (joint space map, JSM). We introduce a generative atlas model to estimate a template (mean) Fshape of the sample populthe classification using both Fshape components. Similar results were obtained using femoral articular surfaces. The discriminant directions identified in the statistical analysis were associated with medial narrowing of the joint space, steeper intercondylar eminence, and relative deepening of the medial tibial plateau. Conclusions The proposed approach provides an integrated framework for combined statistical analysis of shape and JSPs. It can successfully extract features correlated to OA that appear consistent with previous studies in the field. Although future large-scale study is necessary to confirm the significance of these findings, our results suggest that the functional shape methodology is a promising new tool for morphological analysis of OA and orthopedics data in general.Vitamin D intoxication is uncommon in children and is more commonly suspected in the setting of ingestion of high doses of vitamin D. Its manifestations can be non specific and varied ranging from mild like constipation and vomiting to life threatening like arrhythmias and encephalopathy. Here we present a 14 month female who presented with loss of milestones, floppiness, and poor interaction with mother. She was detected to have hypercalcemia and was subsequently diagnosed with vitamin D intoxication. She was successfully treated with hydration, furosemide, prednisolone and frequent monitoring of electrolytes, electrocardiography and volume status. Subsequently as her serum calcium levels normalized with therapy, she became alert, conscious and started achieving developmental milestones.

To enhance sensitivity in the region of interest, EIT with a novel offset arrangement of boundary electrodes is proposed to image a simulated frontal lobe hemorrhage and secondary ischemia. To cope with the ill-posed inverse problem, the L1 regularization method is developed during the reconstruction. In addition, the impact of noise with a signal-to-noise ratio of 56 dB is studied. Results Compared with the traditional uniform electrode arrangement, the results demonstrate that EIT with the proposed offset arrangement of electrodes is more advantageous for imaging frontal lobe disease. Conclusions The proposed offset arrangement of electrodes is superior to the traditional uniform arrangement in imaging frontal lobe disease, especially under the impact of noise.Purpose Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative disease involving a variety of structural changes in the affected joint. In addition to narrowing of the articular space, recent studies involving statistical shape analysis methods have suggested that specific bone shapes might be associated with the disease. We aim to investigate the feasibility of using the recently introduced framework of functional shapes (Fshape) to extract morphological features of OA that combine shape variability of articular surfaces of the tibia (or femur) together with the changes of the joint space. Approach Our study uses a dataset of three-dimensional cone-beam CT volumes of 17 knees without OA and 17 knees with OA. Each knee is then represented as an object (Fshape) consisting of a triangulated tibial (or femoral) articular surface and a map of joint space widths (JSWs) measured at the points of this surface (joint space map, JSM). We introduce a generative atlas model to estimate a template (mean) Fshape of the sample populthe classification using both Fshape components. Similar results were obtained using femoral articular surfaces. The discriminant directions identified in the statistical analysis were associated with medial narrowing of the joint space, steeper intercondylar eminence, and relative deepening of the medial tibial plateau. Conclusions The proposed approach provides an integrated framework for combined statistical analysis of shape and JSPs. It can successfully extract features correlated to OA that appear consistent with previous studies in the field. Although future large-scale study is necessary to confirm the significance of these findings, our results suggest that the functional shape methodology is a promising new tool for morphological analysis of OA and orthopedics data in general.Vitamin D intoxication is uncommon in children and is more commonly suspected in the setting of ingestion of high doses of vitamin D. She was detected to have hypercalcemia and was subsequently diagnosed with vitamin D intoxication. She was successfully treated with hydration, furosemide, prednisolone and frequent monitoring of electrolytes, electrocardiography and volume status. Here, we quantified a glycan structural type using a recently developed biocatalytic strategy, which involves laminarinase enzymes that specifically cleave the algal glycan laminarin into readily analyzable fragments. We measured laminarin along transects in the Arctic, Atlantic, and Pacific oceans and during three time series in the North Sea. These data revealed a median of 26 ± 17% laminarin within the particulate organic carbon pool. The observed correlation between chlorophyll and laminarin suggests an annual production of algal laminarin of 12 ± 8 gigatons that is, approximately three times the annual atmospheric carbon dioxide increase by fossil fuel burning.

To address the gap in interventions for improving sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY; e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth) health, we tested the feasibility of a game-based intervention for increasing help-seeking, productive coping skills, resource knowledge/use, and well-being.
We conducted a 2-arm randomized controlled trial testing a theory-based, community-informed, Web-accessible computer role-playing game intervention. Control condition received a list of resources. Primary hypotheses were high levels of implementation success, game demand, and game acceptability.
We randomized 240 SGMYs aged 14-18 years into the intervention (n= 120) or control (n= 120) conditions. Participants completed baseline (100%), 1-month follow-up (T2; 73.3%), and 2-month follow-up (T3; 64.4%) surveys. Among intervention participants, 55.8% downloaded and played the game. Of those who played, 46.2% reported a desire to play it again, and 50.8% would recommend it. Game acceptability exceeded hypothesizial with SGMY. The game-based intervention was feasible and acceptable to SGMY, and preliminary results show it improved several health-related behaviors. A larger scale trial is needed to test whether the game-based intervention can reduce health inequities for SGMY.The aim of this study was to establish whether PD-L1, PD-1, and markers of the tumor microenvironment (CD4, CD8, FOXP3) could have a prognostic value in squamous cell carcinoma of the lip (LSCC). In patients with histologically proven LSCC, tumor specimens were stained using immunohistochemistry (for PD-1, PD-L1, CD4, CD8, and FOXP3) on paraffin-embedded tissues. Patients with (N+) and without (N-) nodal metastasis were stratified and matched to each other according to prognostically relevant clinicopathological parameters. 58 patients (29 N+ and 29 N-) were included. PD-L1 expression was positive (>1%) in 56.1% (n = 33) of all LSCC cases, but its expression did not differ significantly between metastasis groups (65.5% in N+ versus 48.3% in N-; p = 0.144). Nodal disseminated LSCC showed a tendency for higher PD-L1 expression. None of the analyzed markers showed significant correlation with the risk for nodal disease, or revealed significant prognostic value. Due to their significant expression, PD-L1 and PD-1 are potential targets for checkpoint inhibitor therapy in LSCC. Their expression should be analyzed in advanced and metastasized LSCC cases.
Many breast cancer patients are vulnerable to poor nutritional status and may benefit from nutrition education, but existing materials are not generally tailored to the needs of low-literacy immigrant and minority patients.
With nutritionist guidance, we developed a nutrition presentation for breast cancer patients. English- (n=29) and Spanish-speaking (n=19) patients were recruited from 5 safety-net hospitals, an academic cancer center, and a Latina cancer support organization. Materials were tested using multiple rounds of cognitive interviewing (with an adapted USDA interview guide), followed by study team reviews and modifications, until saturation.
Seven rounds of interviews per language were needed. Approximately 25% of interviewees had less than a high school education. Changes included adapting to regional lexicons and resolving vague/confusing phrasing. Specific food examples needed cultural tailoring. Text color coding (red/bad, green/good) was requested. Labeled images enhanced participants' understanding of concepts. Spanish speakers expressed a desire to understand nutrition labeling, and this was emphasized in the Spanish slides.
Cognitive interviews were an important tool for creating a nutrition curriculum tailored to the needs of low-literacy, mostly immigrant patients.

This review aimed to (i) inventory the definitions and measurements of patient empowerment in healthcare literature; (ii) appraise the conceptual and methodological rigor of included studies; and (iii) identify correlates of patient empowerment in persons with chronic conditions.
Four databases were searched to identify articles measuring patient empowerment in persons with chronic conditions, used a quantitative design and provided evidence on correlates of patient empowerment. Seventy-six articles were included and analyzed by descriptive statistics and summative content analysis.
The articles used a range of definitions (n=35) and instruments (n=38), evaluating a range of correlates in four categories sociodemographic characteristics, clinical outcomes, patient-reported outcomes and patient-reported experiences. The most frequent associations were between patient empowerment and age (n=21), sex (n=15), educational level (n=15) and quality of life (n=18). However, they were not always significant.
The broad variation of definitions and instruments highlights the lack of consensus on how to interpret and measure patient empowerment. Although several covariates have been evaluated, there are few studies assess the same relationships.

To discover the potential value and evaluation of the night market, we interviewed 46 experts from several industries and occupations in Taiwan to investigate the relationships between brand equity, benefits, motivations of and satisfaction with night market tourism and development. The results show that travel motivation has both direct and indirect effects on brand equity, benefits and satisfaction. Frequency-resolved optical gating for the complete reconstruction of attosecond bursts (FROG-CRAB) is a well-known technique for the complete temporal characterization of ultrashort extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses, with durations down to a few tens of attoseconds. Recently, this technique was extended to few-femtosecond XUV pulses, produced by high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in gases, thanks to the implementation of a robust iterative algorithm the extended ptychographic iterative engine (ePIE). We demonstrate, by using numerical simulations, that the ptychographic reconstruction technique is characterized by an excellent degree of convergence and robustness. We analyse the effects on pulse reconstruction of various experimental imperfections, namely, the jitter of the relative temporal delay between the XUV pulse and a suitably delayed infrared (IR) pulse and the noise of the measured FROG-CRAB spectrograms. By adjusting the center frequency of a widely tunable OBPF and measuring the corresponding output optical power as the input features of GPR, the proposed OSNR monitoring technique is experimentally proven to be transparent to modulation formats and robust to CFE, chromatic dispersion (CD), polarization mode dispersion (PMD), and nonlinear effect (NLE). Experimental results for 9-channel 32Gbaud PDM-16QAM signals with 50GHz channel spacing demonstrate OSNR monitoring with the root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.429 dB and the mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.294 dB, in the OSNR range of -1∼30 dB. Even better, our proposed technique has the potential to be employed for link monitoring at the intermediation nodes and can eliminate the necessity to know the transmission information.
Frequency-resolved optical gating for the complete reconstruction of attosecond bursts (FROG-CRAB) is a well-known technique for the complete temporal characterization of ultrashort extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses, with durations down to a few tens of attoseconds. Recently, this technique was extended to few-femtosecond XUV pulses, produced by high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in gases, thanks to the implementation of a robust iterative algorithm the extended ptychographic iterative engine (ePIE). We demonstrate, by using numerical simulations, that the ptychographic reconstruction technique is characterized by an excellent degree of convergence and robustness. We analyse the effects on pulse reconstruction of various experimental imperfections, namely, the jitter of the relative temporal delay between the XUV pulse and a suitably delayed infrared (IR) pulse and the noise of the measured FROG-CRAB spectrograms. This is a cross-sectional, multi-center, and questionnaire-based study.
The study was done in forty-four training centers across Saudi Arabia.
In total, 313 orthopedic residents participated.
The web-based questionnaire examined the perceptions of residents regarding practices, experience, training, difficulties, and challenges surrounding the obtention of informed consent, as well as residents' confidence in obtaining informed consent for different orthopedic situations and eight common orthopedic procedures.
Most residents were allowed to obtain consent independently for all emergency, trauma, primary, and revision cases at their institution (92.7%). Only 33.5% of the residents received formal training and teaching on obtaining informed consent, with 67.1% having believed that they needed more trainingies to standardize the informed consent process, provide formal training for obtaining informed consent, and provide supervision for residents during obtention of informed consent.
Many residents incompletely disclosed key information upon obtaining informed consent and reported lacking confidence in their ability to perform the procedure in their daily practices. To improve patient care and residents' performance and overcome these difficulties and challenges, institutions should develop effective strategies to standardize the informed consent process, provide formal training for obtaining informed consent, and provide supervision for residents during obtention of informed consent.

Sleep habits and specific sleep behaviors have an influence on the academic success of students. However, the characteristics of sleep and sleep habits of university students as predictors of poor academic performance have been scarcely analyzed. In the present study, we aimed to investigate sleep habits and their influence on academic performance in a cohort of Nursing Degree students.
This was a cross-sectional and observational study. An anonymous and self-administered questionnaire was used, including different scales such as the 'Morningness and Eveningness scale', an author-generated sleep habit questionnaire, and certain variables aimed at studying the socio-familial and academic aspects of the Nursing students. The association of sleep habits and other variables with poor academic performance was investigated by logistic regression. The internaleep pattern, bad sleep habits, and age < 25 years, were independently associated with a higher risk of poor academic performance. This requires multifactorial approaches and the involvement of all the associated actors teachers, academic institutions, health institutions, and the people in charge in university residences, among others.
