The collected image database was composed of 32 WT and 7 mutant IDH cases. For each image, a ranklet transformation which changed the original pixel values into relative coefficients was 1st applied to reduce the effects of different scanning parameters and machines on the underlying patterns. Extracting various textural features from the transformed ranklet images and combining them in a logistic regression classifier allowed an IDH prediction. We achieved an accuracy of 90%, a sensitivity of 57%, and a specificity of 97%. Four of the selected textural features in the classifier (homogeneity, difference entropy, information measure of correlation, and inverse difference normalized) were significant (P  less then  .05), and the other 2 were close to being significant (P = .06). Major risk factors in the overall cohort were diabetes (37.3%), ST elevation myocardial infarction (18.1%) and non-ST myocardial infarction (24.6%). The follow-up rate was 88.6% in the overall population. The TLR rate in the overall cohort was 2.2% whereas definite/probable stent thrombosis (ST) occurred in 0.7%. In patients with in-stent restenosis lesions, the major adverse cardiac events rate was 6.4% whereas the corresponding rate for isolated left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease was highest with 6.7% followed by patients with culprit lesions in vein bypasses (VB, 7.1%). The mortality rate in patients treated in VB lesions was highest with 5.4%, followed by the isolated LMCA subgroup (3.4%) and ACS (2.6%).PCI with PF-SES in an unselected patient population, is associated with low clinical event and ST rates. Zostera marina, a fully submerged marine angiosperm with a unique evolutionary history associated with its terrestrial origin, has distinct photochemical characteristics caused by its oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) being prone to deactivation in visible light. Based on the present phylogenetic analysis, the chloroplast NADPH dehydrogenase-like (NDH) complex was found to be completed in of Z. marina, unlike other marine plants, suggesting its crucial role. Thus, the responses of electron transport to irradiation were investigated through multiple chlorophyll fluorescence techniques and Western blot analysis. Moreover, the respective contribution of the two photosystem I cyclic electron flow (PSI-CEF) pathways to the generation of trans-thylakoid proton gradient (∆pH) was also examined using inhibitors. The contributions of the two PSI-CEF pathways to ∆pH were similar; furthermore, there was a trade-off between the two pathways under excess irradiation the PGR5/L1-dependent PSI-CEF decreased gradually following its activation during the initial illumination, while NDH-dependent PSI-CEF was activated gradually with exposure duration. OEC inactivation was continuously under excess irradiation, which exhibits a positive linear correlation with the activation of NDH-dependent PSI-CEF. We suggest that PGR5/L1-dependent PSI-CEF was preferentially activated to handle the excess electron caused by the operation of OEC during the initial illumination. Subsequently, the increasing OEC inactivation with exposure duration resulted in a deficit of electrons. Limited electrons from PSI might preferentially synthesize NADPH, which could support the function of NDH-dependent PSI-CEF to generate ∆pH and ATP via reducing ferredoxin, thereby maintaining OEC stability.BACKGROUND Extended half-life (EHL) factor VIII (FVIII)-replacement therapies enable patients with haemophilia A to maintain higher activity levels with fewer injections. While PEG levels are expected to reach steady state with repeated dosing, there has been some discussion regarding whether abnormal accumulation of PEG in plasma and tissues may occur. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to examine plasma PEG concentrations in rats and humans repeatedly treated with N8-GP for periods of up to 5 years. METHODS PEG levels were measured using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry in plasma samples from rats treated with N8-GP as part of a 52-week toxicity study. Human plasma samples from children, adolescents and adults treated with N8-GP as part of the pathfinder programme were also examined (NCT01731600; NCT01480180). These data were compared with steady-state PEG levels predicted by pharmacokinetic modelling of single-dose rat data. RESULTS PEG levels reached steady state in plasma in both rats and humans after repeated dosing. The timing and degree of PEG increase to steady state were in line with or below model predictions, confirming the utility of the pharmacokinetic model and indicating that rat data can be used to estimate human plasma PEG levels. CONCLUSION Steady-state PEG levels were reached in plasma from rats and humans repeatedly treated with N8-GP. It has often been compared to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) in terms of clinical outcomes. However, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has been sparsely studied after SG. The goal was to study HRQoL after SG using a generic (****-36) and an obesity-specific (impact of weight on quality of life-lite, IWQOL-lite) questionnaire and to compare the results with RYGB. METHODS HRQoL and weight were measured before and 9, 15, and 24 months after surgery. ****-36 physical health summary (PHS) and mental health summary (MHS), and IWQOL-lite total score were calculated. A mixed model analysis was conducted to study the change in HRQoL and compare SG with RYGB. RESULTS A total of 219 patients (8.7%) underwent a SG and 2309 patients (91.3%) a RYGB. PHS, MHS, and IWQOL-lite significantly improved after SG when comparing baseline to all follow-up moments (p less then 0.001 in all). There were no significant differences when comparing SG with RYGB change in PHS (β - 0.10, 95% CI - 1.24 to 1.04, p = 0.861), MHS (β - 0.51, 95% CI - 1.56 to 0.52, p = 0.330), and IWQOL-lite (β 0.310, 95% CI - 0.85 to 1.47, p = 0.601). CONCLUSION HRQoL significantly improved after SG. In the included populations, weight loss was comparable and the extent to which HRQoL improved did not differ between SG and RYGB, when measured with the ****-36 or IWQOL-lite. This might be partly caused by the fact that these questionnaires do not assess specific bariatric HRQoL and/or complaints.

CAAs play an important role, which produces hypoxia and inflammation environment and aggravates this environment. The formation and secretion of TAMs with M2 phenotypic characteristics, such as HIF-1α, and TNF-α, affect the progress of cancer cells by interfering with the secretion of MCP-1 by CAAs. Therefore, the interaction between CAAs and TAMs may be an effective therapeutic target for breast cancer. In this review, we focus on the biological effects of two types of cells in breast cancer, in order to better explain the crosstalk between them and provide new ideas for the future treatment of breast cancer. The success of nerve regeneration depends on distal stump degeneration, tissue clearance and remodeling, processes in which the immune system participates. Phenotyping of T helper (Th) cells by flow cytometry revealed an increased frequency of the proinflammatory Th1 and Th17 cell subsets in recipient **** at 7 days and showed that the frequency of these cells remained unchanged for up to 21 days. Moreover, nerve regeneration was improved upon cell therapy, as shown by sustained immunolabeling of axons, Schwann cells, growth-associated protein 43 and BDNF from 14 to 28 days after lesion. The mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) is a central cell regulator, but mTORC1 function in macrophages in CNV is not fully understood. We explored the effect of mTORC1 pathway regulation on macrophages in CNV. A laser-induced murine CNV model was performed. Expression of phospho-S6 and F4/80 in CNV lesions was analyzed by immunofluorescence. Macrophages in CNV lesions were found at 1 day after laser treatment, reached a peak at 5 days, and decreased at 7 and 14 days. mTORC1 activity of cells in CNV lesions was increased from 3 to 7 days, and deceased at 14 days. Most infiltrating macrophages in CNV lesions had strong mTORC1 activity at 3 and 5 days that subsequently decreased. In vitro, THP-1 macrophages were polarized to M1 or M2 with rapamycin or siRNA treatment. The human retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cell line ARPE-19 was co-cultured with macrophages. Cytokine expression of macrophages and ARPE-19 cells was detected by quantitative PCR. Inhibiting mTORC1 activity of macrophages reduced M1 and strengthened M2, which was reversed by mTORC1 hyperactivation. Both M1 and M2 macrophages induced RPE cells to express less PEDF and more MMP9, IL-1β and MCP-1. Inhibiting or enhancing mTORC1 activity of macrophages changed cytokine expression of RPE cells. Together, we demonstrated that macrophage functions in CNV were regulated partly by the mTORC1 pathway, and mTORC1 activity of macrophages influenced the expression of cytokines that are associated with CNV development in RPE cells. Modulation of excitability in the motor system can be observed before overt movements but also in response to covert invitations to act. We asked whether such changes can be induced in the absence of even covert motor instructions, namely, as a function of the location of the hand with reference to the body. Participants received single-pulse TMS over the motor cortex while they placed their contralateral hand (right hand in Experiment 1, left hand in Experiment 2) to the right or left of their body midline, and looked either at or away from their hand. In both experiments, greater excitability was observed when gaze was directed to the right. This finding is interpreted as a consequence of left brain lateralization of motor attention. Contrary to our expectations, we furthermore consistently observed greater excitability when gaze was directed away from the hand. To account for this finding, we introduce the concept of "surveillance attention" which, we speculate, modulates cortical gain, and thereby cortical excitability. Its function is to increase readiness to act in non-foveated regions of space. Such a process confers an advantage in environments, like those in which humans evolved, in which threatening stimuli may appear unexpectedly, and at any time. Visual perception is introspectively stable and continuous across eye movements. It has been hypothesized that displacements in retinal input caused by eye movements can be dissociated from displacements in the external world using extra-retinal information, such as a corollary discharge from the oculomotor system. The extra-retinal information can inform the visual system about an upcoming eye movement and accompanying displacements in retinal input. The parietal cortex has been hypothesized to be critically involved in integrating retinal and extra-retinal information. Two tasks have been widely used to assess the quality of this integration double-step saccades and intra-saccadic displacements. Double-step saccades performed by patients with parietal cortex lesions seemed to show hypometric second saccades. However, recently idea has been refuted by demonstrating that patients with very similar lesions were able to perform the double step saccades, albeit taking multiple saccades to reach the saccade target. So, it seems that extra-retinal information is still available for saccade execution after a lesion to the parietal lobe. Here, we investigated whether extra-retinal signals are also available for perceptual judgements in nine patients with strokes affecting the posterior parietal cortex. We assessed perceptual continuity with the intra-saccadic displacement task. We exploited the increased sensitivity when a small temporal blank is introduced after saccade offset (blank effect). The blank effect is thought to reflect the availability of extra-retinal signals for perceptual judgements. Although patients exhibited a relative difference to control subjects, they still demonstrated the blank effect. The data suggest that a lesion to the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) alters the processing of extra-retinal signals but does not abolish their influence altogether.

However, prolonged non-weightbearing may be detrimental. The goal of this case series was to assess the outcomes of early protected weightbearing after operative treatment of acute ankle fractures with syndesmotic instability requiring screw stabilization. Fifty-eight consecutive patients, treated from January 2006 to January 2013, met the inclusion criteria with a minimum follow up of 1 year. Electronic medical records and radiographs were reviewed for patient and surgical characteristics, postoperative complications, and maintenance of reduction. Patients initiated walking at an average of 10 days (range 1 to 15) postoperatively. Surgical treatment consisted of operative reduction with standard fixation devices and 1 or 2 trans-syndesmotic screws that purchased 4 cortices. All 58 patients maintained correction after surgery when allowed to weightbear early in the postoperative recovery. Five complications (8.6%) occurred in the 58 patients, which included 3 superficial infections (5.2%) and 2 cases (3.4%) of neuritis. The maintenance of reduction and low complication rate in this study support the option of early protected weightbearing after ankle fracture ORIF with trans-syndesmotic fixation. The role of metatarsus primus elevatus and first ray hypermobility is under scrutiny with regard to the pathoanatomy of hallux rigidus. Regardless of the underlying biomechanical cause, there is a subset of patients with hallux limitus present with concomitant insufficiency of the medial column identified on clinical exam and lateral imaging as dorsal divergence of the first compared with the second metatarsal. While cheilectomy and decompression metatarsal osteotomy are commonly used to mitigate retrograde forces at the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MPJ) level, traditional hallux limitus procedures do not address more proximal deformity of the medial column. Although the authors prefer to treat this complex condition with cheilectomy combined with tarsometatarsal joint arthrodesis, there is a paucity of literature on this approach. A prospective cohort study of consecutive patients was therefore performed to assess outcomes. Ten patients (3 males, 7 females) and 11 feet (8 right and 3 left) met the inclusion criteria. Mean follow-up was 21.9 months (range 12 to 52). Average age was 50.4 years (range 28 to 61). The average preoperative ACFAS score of 49.6 (range 29 to 61) improved to 78 (range 51 to 92) at 10 weeks postoperatively and 85.4 (range 60 to 100) at 1 year postoperatively. By 1 year postsurgery, 9 of 10 patients (90%) described their satisfaction level as very satisfied, and 1 (10%) was somewhat satisfied. PURPOSE The hypertrophied peroneal tubercle may result in lateral ankle pain with peroneal tendon tenosynovitis and rupture. The aim of this study was to evaluate different configurations and dimensions of the normal peroneal tubercle using two-dimensional CT scan. METHODS Totally, 100 normal CT scans of cases older than 18 years of age were assessed to determine the shape of the peroneal tubercle. Moreover, height, length and width of different configurations of the normal peroneal tubercle were measured in axial and coronal sections of the ankle CT scans. RESULTS Four different configurations based on the axial cut of the calcaneus were found; single-convex (59%), double-convex (24%), plateau (9%), and convex-concave (8%) without statistically significant difference between genders (p-value 0.526). Totally, mean of height, length and width were 4.42 ± 1.38 mm, 28.88 ± 6.58 mm and 17.17 ± 3.85 mm, respectively. Although mean of the height in the single-convex and the double-convex types were 4.5 ± 1.4 mm and 5.0 ± 1.4 mm, respectively, the highest peroneal tubercle in the single-convex and the double-convex group were 10.2 mm and 8.5 mm, respectively. CONCLUSIONS In cases with lateral ankle pain and suspicious to hypertrophied peroneal tubercle, two-dimensional CT scan can be an available practical modality to identify the pathological type of the peroneal tubercle based on the presented classification and normal values. As previously reported in the literature, considering cut-off point of 5 mm could result in overdiagnosis of the hypertrophied peroneal tubercle, especially in single-convex type; however, clinical correlation is always paramount. AIMS The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) 22,881-10,882 trial showed significant benefit of a radiotherapy boost (RTB) in women ≤40 years in a pre-hormone therapy (HT) era. We determined how the use of HT and RTB changed in response to clinical guidelines and whether the benefit of routine RTB was still observed in the HT era. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between 1996 and 2004, a provincial database identified all women ≤40 years with breast cancer who met the inclusion criteria of the EORTC trial. In total, 411 patients were classified into three eras defined by the guidelines era 1 (discretionary HT, discretionary RTB); era 2 (routine HT, discretionary RTB); era 3 (routine HT, routine RTB). HT use, RTB use and cumulative incidence of local recurrence were calculated and compared across eras. RESULTS HT use increased after the first policy change from 13% to 75% for oestrogen receptor-positive patients (P less then 0.01). Fifty-eight consecutive patients, treated from January 2006 to January 2013, met the inclusion criteria with a minimum follow up of 1 year. Electronic medical records and radiographs were reviewed for patient and surgical characteristics, postoperative complications, and maintenance of reduction. Patients initiated walking at an average of 10 days (range 1 to 15) postoperatively. Surgical treatment consisted of operative reduction with standard fixation devices and 1 or 2 trans-syndesmotic screws that purchased 4 cortices. All 58 patients maintained correction after surgery when allowed to weightbear early in the postoperative recovery. Five complications (8.6%) occurred in the 58 patients, which included 3 superficial infections (5.2%) and 2 cases (3.4%) of neuritis. The aim of this study was to evaluate different configurations and dimensions of the normal peroneal tubercle using two-dimensional CT scan. METHODS Totally, 100 normal CT scans of cases older than 18 years of age were assessed to determine the shape of the peroneal tubercle. Moreover, height, length and width of different configurations of the normal peroneal tubercle were measured in axial and coronal sections of the ankle CT scans. RESULTS Four different configurations based on the axial cut of the calcaneus were found; single-convex (59%), double-convex (24%), plateau (9%), and convex-concave (8%) without statistically significant difference between genders (p-value 0.526). Totally, mean of height, length and width were 4.42 ± 1.38 mm, 28.88 ± 6.58 mm and 17.17 ± 3.85 mm, respectively. Although mean of the height in the single-convex and the double-convex types were 4.5 ± 1.4 mm and 5.0 ± 1.4 mm, respectively, the highest peroneal tubercle in the single-convex and the double-convex group were 10.2 mm and 8.5 mm, respectively. CONCLUSIONS In cases with lateral ankle pain and suspicious to hypertrophied peroneal tubercle, two-dimensional CT scan can be an available practical modality to identify the pathological type of the peroneal tubercle based on the presented classification and normal values. As previously reported in the literature, considering cut-off point of 5 mm could result in overdiagnosis of the hypertrophied peroneal tubercle, especially in single-convex type; however, clinical correlation is always paramount. We determined how the use of HT and RTB changed in response to clinical guidelines and whether the benefit of routine RTB was still observed in the HT era. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between 1996 and 2004, a provincial database identified all women ≤40 years with breast cancer who met the inclusion criteria of the EORTC trial. In total, 411 patients were classified into three eras defined by the guidelines era 1 (discretionary HT, discretionary RTB); era 2 (routine HT, discretionary RTB); era 3 (routine HT, routine RTB). HT use, RTB use and cumulative incidence of local recurrence were calculated and compared across eras. RESULTS HT use increased after the first policy change from 13% to 75% for oestrogen receptor-positive patients (P less then 0.01). Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are zinc-dependent extracellular matrix remodeling endopeptidases. MMPs cleave various matrix proteins such as collagen, elastin, gelatin and casein. MMPs are often implicated in pathological processes, such as cancer progression including metastasis. Meanwhile, microorganisms produce various secondary metabolites having unique structures. We designed and synthesized dehydroxymethylepoxyquinomicin (DHMEQ) based on the structure of epoxyquinomicin C derived from Amycolatopsis as an inhibitor of NF-κB. This compound inhibited cancer cell migration and invasion. Since DHMEQ is comparatively unstable in the body, we designed and synthesized a stable DHMEQ analog, SEMBL. SEMBL also inhibited cancer cell migration and invasion. We also looked for inhibitors of cancer cell migration and invasion from microbial culture filtrates. As a result, we isolated a known compound, ketomycin, from Actinomycetes. DHMEQ, SEMBL, and ketomycin are all NF-κB inhibitors, and inhibited the expression of MMPs in the inhibition of cellular migration and invasion. AgaHb1 is proposed to play a role in oxygen transport or sensing based on its multimeric state, slow autoxidation, and small but significant amount of five-coordinated haem in the deoxy ferrous form. AmeHb appears to behave more like vertebrate neuroglobin with a complex function given its diversified distribution in the genome. BACKGROUND Actionable somatic molecular alterations are found in 15 to 20% of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in the Caucasians. NSCLC is a tumor observed in patients with germline-variants causing Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS), but its somatic molecular profile is unknown. METHODS Retrospective study of clinical and molecular profile of NSCLC in patients with germline-TP53 variants. RESULTS In 22 NSCLC patients with LFS (n=23 lung tumors), 64% were female, median age 51, 74% non-smokers, 73% with adenocarcinoma histology and 84% were diagnosed with advanced stage disease. These 22 patients harbor 16 distinct germline TP53 variants; the most common was p.R158H (5/22; 3 in the same family). Personal and familiar history of cancer was reported in 71% and 90% of patients, respectively. Lung cancer was in most of the cases (87%, 13/15) a late-onset diagnosis. Among the 21 tumors analyzed, somatic oncogenic driver mutations were found in 19/21 (90%), 18 EGFR-mutations (exon-19 deletions in 12 cases, L858R in 3 cases and G719A, exon-20 insertion, missing mutation subtype, each in one case) and one case with ROS1 fusion. A PI3KCA mutation was concurrently detected at diagnosis in 3 EGFR exon 19 deletion tumors (3/12). The median OS was 37.3 months in 14 patients treated with EGFR-inhibitors; 7 developed resistance, 5 (71%) with acquired EGFR-T790M mutation and one with SCLC transformation. CONCLUSION Driver oncogenic alterations were observed in 90% of the LFS tumors, mainly EGFR mutations but also one ROS1 fusion. The germline-TP53 variants and lung cancer carcinogenesis driven by oncogenic processes needs further evaluation. Encouraging activity has recently emerged in pre-treated patients with thymic carcinoma. Conversely in malignant pleural mesothelioma, pivotal positive signs of activity have not been fully confirmed in randomized trials. METHODS A total of 72 consecutive patients who underwent SPLS (n = 33) and MPLS (n = 39) for HCC were enrolled. The peri-operative parameters of safety and feasibility, as well as the short-term oncological outcomes were compared. RESULTS The length of postoperative hospital stay (LOS) was significantly shorter in the SPLS group than in the MPLS group (4.12 vs. 4.59 days, P = 0.043). No significant difference between the two groups was found in the operation time (104.58 vs. 95.69 min in the SPLS group and MPLS group respectively, P = 0.353) or the amount of blood loss (62.73 vs. 68.46 ml, P = 0.595). The 1-year recurrence-free survival rate was 77.

Pulse laser treatment is useful for aesthetic improvement in children with capillary vascular malformation and residual superficial haemangiomas. However, pulse laser treatment is painful, and repeated procedures are usually required to achieve a satisfactory clinical result. Evidence shows that analgesia in children undergoing pulse laser treatment may vary from general anaesthesia to no treatment at all. This report describes our institutional experience with deep sedation in children with capillary vascular malformation, undergoing laser pulse treatment.The objective of the study was to investigate the efficacy of three energy densities 4, 10, and 50 J/cm2 of pulsed NdYAG laser for the treatment of crushed sciatic nerve in Wister rats by evaluating changes in the sciatic functional index and the electrophysiology.A total of 180 Wistar rats were involved in the study. Rats were randomly assigned to five groups. Rats were subjected to the sciatic nerve crushing. Control negative (CONT-ve), which received no crushing; control positive (CONT+ve), which received crushing with no laser; and HILT-4, HILT-10, and HILT-50 groups, which received pulsed NdYAG laser (10 Hz, 360 mJ/cm2) with energy densities 4, 10, and 50 J/cm2, respectively. The SFI, the amilitude of compound motor action potential (CMAP) and sciatic motor nerve conduction velocity (****) were measured before and after seven, 14, and 21 days after crushing. For the SFI and electrophysiological analysis, repeated measures ANOVA is used, followed by Bonferroni's repeated-measures test. Statistical significance was set at p less then 0.05. After one week, there was no significant difference in SFI, CMAP, and **** among the three laser groups with significant changes between them and CONT-ve and CONT+ve groups. There was a significant increase in either CMAP amplitude or **** after 14 days with significant decrease in the SFI after 21 days among all treatment groups. The pulsed NdYAG laser applied with energy densities 4, 10, and 50 J/cm2 significantly decreased the SFI and increased the CMAP and **** of the crushed sciatic nerve in Wister rats. Among laser doses, the difference in the rate of recovery in the electrophysiology was found after two weeks while in the SFI after three weeks. Accordingly, the present study sought to draw links between musical training, working memory capacity, and preference for musical complexity. Participants were assessed for their experience with musical training, their working-memory capacity, and their preference for musical complexity. Diverging from predictions based on vision research, our analyses revealed that musical training significantly mediated the association between working memory capacity and preference for music complexity. This significant mediation held even after a variety of sociodemographic variables (gender, education, socioeconomic status) were taken into account. Furthermore, the role of working memory capacity was domain general, such that the mediation was significant regardless of which measure of working memory capacity was used (tone, operation, or symmetry span). The current results develop a model of aesthetic preference that illuminates differences between vision and audition in terms of the multifaceted effects of complex skills training on cognition and affect. Moreover, they drive new work aimed at better understanding how domain-general constructs such as working memory capacity might interact with domain-specific cognition.BACKGROUND Observational analysis methods can be refined by benchmarking against randomized trials. METHODS We searched PubMed (from January 1, 2000, to April 30, 2017), the AHRQ Scientific Resource Center Methods Library, reference lists, and bibliographies to identify systematic reviews that compared estimates from observational analyses using propensity scores against randomized trials across three or more clinical topics; reported extractable relative risk (RR) data; and were published in English. One reviewer extracted data from all eligible systematic reviews; a second reviewer verified the extracted data. RESULTS Six systematic reviews matching published observational studies to randomized trials, published between 2012 and 2016, met our inclusion criteria. The reviews reported on 127 comparisons overall, in cardiology (29 comparisons), surgery (49), critical care medicine and sepsis (46), nephrology (2), and oncology (1).

Accordingly, the present study sought to draw links between musical training, working memory capacity, and preference for musical complexity. Participants were assessed for their experience with musical training, their working-memory capacity, and their preference for musical complexity. Diverging from predictions based on vision research, our analyses revealed that musical training significantly mediated the association between working memory capacity and preference for music complexity. This significant mediation held even after a variety of sociodemographic variables (gender, education, socioeconomic status) were taken into account. Furthermore, the role of working memory capacity was domain general, such that the mediation was significant regardless of which measure of working memory capacity was used (tone, operation, or symmetry span). The current results develop a model of aesthetic preference that illuminates differences between vision and audition in terms of the multifaceted effects of complex skills training on cognition and affect. Moreover, they drive new work aimed at better understanding how domain-general constructs such as working memory capacity might interact with domain-specific cognition.BACKGROUND Observational analysis methods can be refined by benchmarking against randomized trials. We reviewed studies systematically comparing observational analyses using propensity score methods against randomized trials to explore whether intervention or outcome characteristics predict agreement between designs. METHODS We searched PubMed (from January 1, 2000, to April 30, 2017), the AHRQ Scientific Resource Center Methods Library, reference lists, and bibliographies to identify systematic reviews that compared estimates from observational analyses using propensity scores against randomized trials across three or more clinical topics; reported extractable relative risk (RR) data; and were published in English. One reviewer extracted data from all eligible systematic reviews; a second reviewer verified the extracted data. RESULTS Six systematic reviews matching published observational studies to randomized trials, published between 2012 and 2016, met our inclusion criteria.
