The results of the cell model were basically the same as those in vivo. Compared with the control group, the expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) was increased, indicating that HSC differentiated into myofibroblasts in HG group. To deepen our understanding on life-cycle and ecological roles of cysts, we reviewed the researches on cysts in the past two decades. Firstly, we outlined the types (resting cysts, zoocysts, mature cysts) and factors that affected the formation of cysts of typical dinoflagellates and diatoms. Secondly, we summarized the formation mechanism, physiological characteristics and germination factors of cysts. Finally, we discussed the significance of cysts in algal evolution and in ocean carbon cycle. This review, summarizing the adaptability and plasticity of cysts, would shed light on ecological mechanism of algae survival strategy.Affected by the unique geographical environment and climate, the hydrological cycle and the underlying mechanisms of the occurrence, migration, and transformation of non-point source pollution are more complicated in semi-arid and semi-humid watersheds. Moreover, the scheme for constructing non-point source pollution models applied to semi-arid and semi-humid areas was put forward. The results showed that there were 24 major fish species (IRI100), the niche breadth values of which differed greatly and were positively correlated with IRI. The niche overlaps of fishes were extremely low in spring. The total amount of species pairs with niche overlap 0.6 (Qik 0.6) were six in April and five in May, which represented 3.9% and 4.8% of the total pairs, respectively. Results from the redundancy analysis showed that the distribution of major fish species were mainly affected by temperature, salinity, water depth, and dissolved oxygen, which caused ecological differentiation of fish species.Tibetan red deer (Cervus wallichii) is an endemic species to China, which was once considered extinct in the wild. As there are several other wild ungulates and domestic animals with similar feeding habits within its habitat range, it's thus essential to study interspecific competition and co-existence between Tibetan red deer and other cohabiting ungulates in the highly unique environment of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Using microscopic analysis on fresh fecal samples collected in Sangri Tibetan Red Deer Nature Reserve from August to September in 2013 and 2014, the trophic niche width and overlap index were calculated on the basis of diet composition of C. wallichii, Cervus albirostris, Procapra picticaudata, Bos mutus and Capra hircas in green grass period. We analyzed and compared the overlap and differentiation of feeding habits between Tibetan red deer and other wild ungulates and domestic animals. The results showed that C. wallichii fed on similar edible plants with other species, but differed in proportionand C. hircas (16.0%)). Food overlap indices between C. wallichii and the other ungulates were all higher than 0.5, and the highest with B. mutus (0.65). The food diversity index (1.32), evenness index (0.37) and niche width index (15.79) of C. wallichii were all at high values. Compared with the results from 2007 to 2008, dietary composition of Tibetan red deer changed greatly as the proportion of Leguminosae increased while that of Cyperaceae decreased, resulting in improvement of food quality. In addition, there was greater competition of food resources between C. wallichii and domestic animals, which would further affect the distribution range and living space of C. wallichii.

Objective The role of vitamin K in the regulation of vascular calcification is established. However, the association of dietary vitamins K1 and K2 with risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) is inconclusive. Design Prospective cohort study. Setting We followed participants in the community-based Hordaland Health Study from 1997 - 1999 through 2009 to evaluate associations between intake of vitamin K and incident (new onset) CHD. Baseline diet was assessed by a past-year food frequency questionnaire. Energy-adjusted residuals of vitamin K1 and vitamin K2 intakes were categorised into quartiles. Participants 2987 Norwegian men and women, age 46-49 years. Methods Information on incident CHD events was obtained from the nationwide Cardiovascular Disease in Norway (CVDNOR) Project. Multivariable Cox regression estimated HRs and 95% CIs with test for linear trends across quartiles. Analyses were adjusted for age, sex, total energy intake, physical activity, smoking and education. A third model further adjusted K1 intake for energy-adjusted fibre and folate, while K2 intake was adjusted for energy-adjusted saturated fatty acids and calcium. Results During a median follow-up time of 11 years, we documented 112 incident CHD cases. In the adjusted analyses, there was no association between intake of vitamin K1 and CHD (HRQ4vsQ1 = 0.92 (95% CI 0.54 to 1.57), p for trend 0.64), while there was a lower risk of CHD associated with higher intake of energy-adjusted vitamin K2 (HRQ4vsQ1 = 0.52 (0.29 to 0.94), p for trend 0.03). Further adjustment for potential dietary confounders did not materially change the association for K1, while the association for K2 was slightly attenuated (HRQ4vsQ1 = 0.58 (0.28 to 1.19)). Conclusions A higher intake of vitamin K2 was associated with lower risk of CHD, while there was no association between intake of vitamin K1 and CHD. Design A cross-sectional survey. Setting Ninety-one hospitals at three different levels in Hunan Province, China county hospitals, municipal hospitals and provincial hospitals. Participants A total of 4110 registered nurses engaged in clinical work related to intravenous infusion. Primary and secondary outcome measures Nurses' knowledge of PICC maintenance was measured by the score of an anonymous, self-reported questionnaire. Results The mean score of PICC maintenance among 4110 nurses was 72.86±14.86. 83.5% of the participants exhibited a score of 60 or above, and 34.1% of them exhibited a good grade with a score of 80 or above. The difference in the correct rate among different dimensions was statistically significant (H=17.721, p less then 0.01). The generalised linear model indicated that the factors influencing the nurses' PICC maintenance knowledge included gender, age, professional title, work setting and previous history of PICC maintenance training. Conclusions In conclusion, the knowledge of PICC maintenance was at a medium level among nurses in Hunan province, China. Methods Electronic searches were performed in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature for observational (cohort, case-control and cross-sectional) studies published between January 2000 and February 2017. Included studies reported HRs or ORs on the association between organ damage (measured by the Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology Damage Index (SDI) score) and mortality. Study quality was assessed using the modified Newcastle-Ottawa assessment. Pooled HRs were obtained using the DerSimonian and Laird random-effects model. Heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochrane Q (Q) and I2 statisti and decrease mortality for patients with SLE.Over the past 5 years, several studies have begun to uncover the links between the classical signal transduction pathways and the physical mechanisms that are used to sculpt branched tissues. These advances have been made, in part, thanks to innovations in live imaging and reporter animals. With modern research tools, our conceptual models of branching morphogenesis are rapidly evolving, and the differences in branching mechanisms between each organ are becoming increasingly apparent. Here, we highlight four branched epithelia that develop at different spatial scales, within different surrounding tissues and via divergent physical mechanisms. Each of these organs has evolved to employ unique branching strategies to achieve a specialized final architecture.Healthcare professionals' capacity to protect themselves, while caring for infected patients during an infectious disease pandemic, depends on their ability to practise universal precautions. In turn, universal precautions rely on the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE). During the SARS-CoV2 outbreak many healthcare workers across the globe have been reluctant to provide patient care because crucial PPE components are in short supply. The lack of such equipment during the pandemic was not a result of careful resource allocation decisions in the global north, where the short supply could be explained through their high cost. Instead, they were the result of democratically elected governments prioritising low tax regimes over an adequate resourcing of their healthcare delivery systems. Such decisions were made despite global health experts warning about the high probability of pandemics like SARS-CoV2 occurring during our lifetimes. Avoidable allocation decisions by democratically elected political leaders resulted in a lack of sufficient PPE for healthcare professionals.

RESULTS A total of 80 eyes of 40 patients were evaluated in this study. Although monocular and binocular uncorrected and corrected distance and near visual acuities were similar between groups, monocular and binocular UIVA were significantly higher in the Eyhance group. There were no statistically significant differences between the 2 groups in terms of photopic contrast sensitivity, OSI, MTF cutoff, Strehl ratio, and glare and halo perception. The ICB00 IOL provided better spectacle independence than the ZCB00 IOL for intermediate distance. CONCLUSIONS In patients without ocular comorbidities, the Eyhance ICB00 IOL provided better UIVA and higher intermediate spectacle independence without impairment of far vision and visual quality, compared with the ZCB00 IOL.PURPOSE To compare the long-term refractive effects of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) for correction of high myopia and astigmatism. SETTING The Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University DESIGN Retrospective case series. METHODS This study included 121 patients (121 eyes 75 in SMILE group and 46 in FS-LASIK group) who underwent SMILE or FS-LASIK for high myopia. Subgroup analyses of high myopia ( less then -9.00 diopters [D]) and extremely high myopia (≥ -9.00 D). The main outcome measure was refractive predictability compared between SMILE and FS-LASIK. Secondary outcomes includeded efficacy, safety, and residual astigmatism. RESULTS We found no differences in terms of refractive predictability between SMILE and FS-LASIK in eyes with high myopia 56% versus 58.7% achieved ± 0.5 D of attempted correction (P=0.771), and 81.3% versus 76.1% achieved ± 1.0 D of attempted correction (P=0.489), respectively. Efficacy indices of the SMILE and FS-LASIK groups were 1.02 ± 0.24 and 1.03 ± 0.24 (P=0.742); safety indices were 1.23 ± 0.22 and 1.20 ± 0.24 (P=0.324), respectively. LogMAR UDVA and spherical equivalent in the high myopia subgroup were better than those in the extremely high myopia subgroup after both SMILE and FS-LASIK (P less then 0.01). CONCLUSIONS SMILE and FS-LASIK were both effective in correcting high myopia and myopic astigmatism. However, both techniques may require further nomogram adjustments when treating eyes with extremely high myopia.PURPOSE To evaluate axial length (AL) measurements and detection rates using a swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) biometer (OA-2000) compared with the IOLMaster, LENSTAR, and ultrasound (US) measurements in eyes with vitreous hemorrhage. SETTING Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, China. DESIGN Comparative evaluation of a diagnostic test or technology. METHODS Patients were adults with vitreous hemorrhage in one or both eyes. Lens Opacities Classification System III was used to determine they type and severity of cataract and the Forrester system was used to classify the grade of vitreous hemorrhage. The AL measurement was taken with the OA-2000, IOLMaster (v5.4), and LENSTAR (v2.1), and with US (Axis-II). The Bland-Altman test was used to assess the agreement between devices. RESULTS Forty eyes were scanned with each of the 4 biometers. For Forrester grade III, the detection rate was 100%, 41.7%, and 41.7% with the OA-2000, IOLMaster, and LENSTAR, respectively. The incidence of black areas was 45.16% (14 of 31 eyes), 12.90% (4 of 31 eyes), 16.13% (5 of 31 eyes), and 12.90% (4 of 31 eyes) for 105 nJ, 110 nJ, 115 nJ, and 120 nJ, respectively. The mean time for lenticule creation was the longest in the 105 nJ group (P = .015). The greatest increase in corneal thickness postoperatively occurred with 105 nJ (P less then .05). Regression was highest in the 105 nJ group at 3 months (P less then .01). However, corneal horizontal coma (C8) was lowest in the 105 nJ group at 1 week (P = .032). The lenticular surface in the 110 nJ group was the smoothest (P = .011). All contrast sensitivity values varied with time and recovered to preoperative levels by 1 week or 1 month. Although monocular and binocular uncorrected and corrected distance and near visual acuities were similar between groups, monocular and binocular UIVA were significantly higher in the Eyhance group. METHODS This study included 121 patients (121 eyes 75 in SMILE group and 46 in FS-LASIK group) who underwent SMILE or FS-LASIK for high myopia. Subgroup analyses of high myopia ( less then -9.00 diopters [D]) and extremely high myopia (≥ -9.00 D). The main outcome measure was refractive predictability compared between SMILE and FS-LASIK. Secondary outcomes includeded efficacy, safety, and residual astigmatism. RESULTS We found no differences in terms of refractive predictability between SMILE and FS-LASIK in eyes with high myopia 56% versus 58.7% achieved ± 0.5 D of attempted correction (P=0.771), and 81.3% versus 76.1% achieved ± 1.0 D of attempted correction (P=0.489), respectively. Efficacy indices of the SMILE and FS-LASIK groups were 1.02 ± 0.24 and 1.03 ± 0.24 (P=0.742); safety indices were 1.23 ± 0.22 and 1.20 ± 0.24 (P=0.324), respectively. According to the surgical method, 65 cases underwent TurboHawk plaque rotation combined with drug-coated balloon (group A), 80 cases underwent simple drug-coated balloon expansion (group B). The characteristics of lesion, function test, ankle-brachial index (ABI), and postoperative complications were analyzed. All the patients were followed up at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after operation. At baseline, there was no difference in all the characteristics between the 2 groups. The early postoperation minimum lumen diameter (MLD), lumen stenosis rate, and ABI in 2 groups both improved. As the follow-up time increased, patients in group A had significantly higher MLD and ABL value, as well as lower level of lumen stenosis rate, restenosis rate, late lumen loss, and target lesion revascularization (all P less then .05). Accordingly, functional testing revealed the 6-minute walk distance, 6-minute claudication distance, resting ABI, and post-exercise ABI in group A were significantly higher than those in group B (all P less then .05). A total of 1,231 were evaluated to assess whether parent education was implemented. We found 36 studies that included a parent education component. These were reviewed with regard to (a) the number of participants and participants' ages, (b) the parent education program provided, (c) the format of the parent education, (d) the duration of the parent education, (e) the measurement of parent education, and (f) the parent fidelity of implementation scores. Results The results of this analysis showed that very few studies have included a parent education component, descriptions of the parent education programs are unclear in most studies, and few studies have scored the parents' implementation of the intervention. Conclusions Currently, there is great variability in parent education programs in regard to participant age, hours provided, fidelity of implementation, format of parent education, and type of treatment used. The TOT success rates were compared between the results obtained from UDI-6 and IIQ-7. Results A total of 109 patients were included in the study (53 postmenopausal and 56 premenopausal). We contacted with 90remenopausal group at 5th year follow-up (p=0.045). There were no significant differences between the premenopausal and postmenopausal patients in terms of TOT success rates at 1st and 5th year control, evaluated with UDI-6 (1st year p=0.198 and 5th year p=0.687) and IIQ-7 (1st year p=0.489 and 5th year p=0.608) questionnaires. Chromosomal rearrangements have long fascinated evolutionary biologists for being widely implicated in causing genetic differentiation. Suppressed recombination has been demonstrated in various species with inversion; however, there is controversy over whether such recombination suppression would facilitate divergence in reciprocal translocation with reduced fitness. Mutations in JAG1 or more rarely NOTCH2 have been reported as the cause of ALGS. In this study, a 5-year old girl with typical ALGS feature and her pregnant mother came to our reproductive genetics clinic for counseling. We aimed to clarify the genetic diagnosis and provide prenatal genetic diagnosis for the pregnant. Next generation sequencing (NGS)-based multigene panel was used to identify pathogenic variant of the proband. Then the candidate variant was verified by using Sanger sequencing. RNA assay was performed to clarify splicing effect of the candidate variant. Amniocentesis, karyotyping, and Sanger sequencing were performed for prenatal testing. We found a novel de novo noncanonical JAG1 splicing variant (c.2917-8C > A) in the proband. Peripheral blood RNA assay suggested that the mutant transcript might escape nonsense-mediated messenger RNA (mRNA) decay (NMD) and encode a C-terminal truncated protein. Information of the variant has resulted in a successful prenatal diagnosis of the fetus. Our results clarified the genetic diagnosis of an ALGS patient and ensured utility of prenatal genetic testing. As the questions addressed by RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) become both more complex and greater in number, there is a need to simplify RNA-seq processing workflows, make them more efficient and interoperable, and capable of handling both large and small datasets. This is especially important for researchers who need to process hundreds to tens of thousands of RNA-seq datasets. To address these needs, we have developed a scalable, user-friendly, and easily deployable analysis suite called RMTA (Read Mapping, Transcript Assembly). RMTA can easily process thousands of RNA-seq datasets with features that include automated read quality analysis, filters for lowly expressed transcripts, and read counting for differential expression analysis. RMTA is containerized using Docker for easy deployment within any compute environment [cloud, local, or high-performance computing (HPC)] and is available as two apps in CyVerse's Discovery Environment, one for normal use and one specifically designed for introducing undergraduates and high school to RNA-seq analysis. For extremely large datasets (tens of thousands of FASTq files) we developed a high-throughput, scalable, and parallelized version of RMTA optimized for launching on the Open Science Grid (OSG) from within the Discovery Environment. OSG-RMTA allows users to utilize the Discovery Environment for data management, parallelization, and submitting jobs to OSG, and finally, employ the OSG for distributed, high throughput computing. Alternatively, OSG-RMTA can be run directly on the OSG through the command line. Here, we analyzed RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) data to identify differentially expressed genes and pathways according to gene ontology (GO) enrichment and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways associated with CRC. The levels of the mRNA encoding CXCL8 were significantly increased in early and advanced stages of CRC, as well as in metastases and nonmetastasis cases using RNA-seq analysis (n = 91). These findings were consistent with immunohistochemical analysis of CXCL8 expression (n = 87). Protein-protein interaction (PPI) prediction combined with transcriptional profiling data revealed that CXCL8 levels positively correlated with cAMP responsive element binding protein 1 (CREB1)/ribosomal protein S6 kinase B1 (RPS6KB1) expression, which promotes cell proliferation and differentiation in high expression, while inversely correlated with the expression of Bcl2 associated agonist of cell death (BAD) protein to inhibit apoptosis during the progression of CRC.

Intertidal bivalves are periodically exposed in air. It is tempting to speculate that the organisms would temporarily escape from contaminants when they are out of water and thus have lower risks. In this study, we tested this speculation by investigating cadmium (Cd) toxicokinetics in an intertidal mussel, Xenostrobus atratus, under the effects of tidal exposure using simulated tidal regimes. The uptake rate constant (ku) of Cd ranged from 0.045 L g-1 d-1 to 0.109 L g-1 d-1, whereas the elimination rate constant (ke) of Cd ranged from 0.029 d-1 to 0.091 d-1. Cd bioaccumulation was slightly higher in the continuously immersed mussels than the alternately immersed mussels, but **** lower than what would be expected if assuming bioaccumulation being proportional to immersion duration. Cd uptake was observed even when mussels were exposed in air, due to uptake of Cd dissolved in mantle cavity fluid and internalization of Cd adsorbed on mussel tissues. Overall, tidal height showed limited effects on Cd bioaccumulation, consistent with the trend of Cd concentrations found in X. atratus collected from different tidal heights. The mantle cavity uptake mechanism is expected to be applicable to other contaminants and bivalves, and should have important implications in risk assessments for intertidal environment. This work aims to study the pseudo-total content, geochemical fractions, and species of arsenic (As) in the bulk soil and in the coarse and fine particles of top soil and soil profiles collected from active and abandoned gold mine spoils in Ghana. The human health risk for adults (male and female) and children has been assessed. To achieve our aims, we collected 51 samples, characterized them, determined the total As content, and sequentially extracted the geochemical fractions of As including water-soluble and un-specifically bound As (FI); specific-sorbed/exchangeable As (FII); poorly (FIII)- and well-crystalline (IV) Fe oxide; and residual/sulphide fraction (FV). In selected samples, As species were determined using synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). Pseudo-total As contents varied from 1807 to 8400 mg kg-1, with the extremes occurring at the abandoned mine spoil. Arsenic was almost 10-fold higher in the fine particles ( less then 0.63 μm) than in the coarse particles. Arsenic was mainly associated with FIII and FV, indicating that the distribution of As in these spoils is governed by their contents of amorphous Fe oxides, sulphides and As bearing minerals. The XANES results indicated that scorodite (FeAsSO4 = 65-76%) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS = 24-35%) are the two major As-containing minerals in the spoils. The potential mobility (PMF = ∑FI-FIV) of As in the fine particles of the top soil was higher (48-61%) than in the coarse particles (25-44%). The mobile fraction (MF) (FI+FII) and PMF of As in the coarse particles of the profiles increased with depth while it decreased in the fine particles. The median hazard index values indicated an elevated human health risk, especially for children. The high contamination degree and potential mobility of As at the studied mine spoils indicate high potential risk for human and environmental health. We conducted an initial external evaluation of successes, challenges and potential barriers faced by SJS registered schools pursuing certification 2014-2018. We also assessed potential associations between registered, certified schools in registered SD-compared to registered, uncertified schools and non-registered schools-and available socio-economic status and socio-demographic indicators using other State of NJ agencies data for five school years within 2014-2019. These included per student costs, number of students per teacher and per administrator, number of teachers per administrator, and average daily enrollment. Overall, tidal height showed limited effects on Cd bioaccumulation, consistent with the trend of Cd concentrations found in X. atratus collected from different tidal heights. The mantle cavity uptake mechanism is expected to be applicable to other contaminants and bivalves, and should have important implications in risk assessments for intertidal environment. This work aims to study the pseudo-total content, geochemical fractions, and species of arsenic (As) in the bulk soil and in the coarse and fine particles of top soil and soil profiles collected from active and abandoned gold mine spoils in Ghana. The human health risk for adults (male and female) and children has been assessed. To achieve our aims, we collected 51 samples, characterized them, determined the total As content, and sequentially extracted the geochemical fractions of As including water-soluble and un-specifically bound As (FI); specific-sorbed/exchangeable As (FII); poorly (FIII)- and well-crystalline (IV) Fe oxide; and residual/sulphide fraction (FV). In selected samples, As species were determined using synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). Pseudo-total As contents varied from 1807 to 8400 mg kg-1, with the extremes occurring at the abandoned mine spoil. Arsenic was almost 10-fold higher in the fine particles ( less then 0.63 μm) than in the coarse particles. Arsenic was mainly associated with FIII and FV, indicating that the distribution of As in these spoils is governed by their contents of amorphous Fe oxides, sulphides and As bearing minerals. The XANES results indicated that scorodite (FeAsSO4 = 65-76%) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS = 24-35%) are the two major As-containing minerals in the spoils. The potential mobility (PMF = ∑FI-FIV) of As in the fine particles of the top soil was higher (48-61%) than in the coarse particles (25-44%). The mobile fraction (MF) (FI+FII) and PMF of As in the coarse particles of the profiles increased with depth while it decreased in the fine particles. The median hazard index values indicated an elevated human health risk, especially for children. The high contamination degree and potential mobility of As at the studied mine spoils indicate high potential risk for human and environmental health. We also assessed potential associations between registered, certified schools in registered SD-compared to registered, uncertified schools and non-registered schools-and available socio-economic status and socio-demographic indicators using other State of NJ agencies data for five school years within 2014-2019. These included per student costs, number of students per teacher and per administrator, number of teachers per administrator, and average daily enrollment. The currently available surgical treatments predominantly include the excision of pathological discs, resulting in the function loss, immobilization, and potential additional complications due to the altered biomechanics. Gene therapy approach involves gene transfer into cells, affects RNA and protein synthesis of the encoded genes in the recipient cells, and facilitates biological treatment. Relatively long-exerting therapeutic effects by gene therapy are potentially advantageous to treat slow progressive degenerative disc disease. In gene therapy, the delivery method and selection of target gene(s) are essential. Although gene therapy was first mediated by viral vectors, technological progress has enabled to apply nonviral vectors and polyplex micelles for the disc. While RNA interference successfully provides specific downregulation of multiple genes in the disc, clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) system has increased attention to alter the process of intervertebral disc degeneration. Then, more recent findings of our studies have suggested autophagy, the intracellular self-digestion, and recycling system under the negative regulation by the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), as a gene therapy target in the disc. We examined effects of the three metals cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and nickel (Ni) on two subpopulations of the cyclopoid copepod Paracyclopina nana. We sought to investigate the effects of metal exposure on population growth and structure of P. nana and to understand the parameters affecting the metal bioaccumulation in copepods. A first experiment tested the hypothesis of competition between these metals in a mixture using a P. nana mass culture in 10 L beakers with the sublethal concentrations (1/3 of LC50) as determined for E. affinis. A second experiment pursued the same with a P. nana population which was adapted to a higher Cu concentration for several generations (226.9 ± 15.9 μg g-1 dw Cu in copepods) and using the proper sublethal concentrations for P. nana. After 96 h of exposure, results from the first experiment showed a decreasing population growth and instead of an increasing metal accumulation in copepods. Cd also appeared to be more accumulated when it was alone, confirming the hypothesis of metal competition in mixture. Results from the second experiment revealed less marked effects. When metal concentrations increased in the treatment it decreased in copepods, indicating depuration activity in the population already adapted to metal exposure. Novel meso-zero valent iron (mZVI) was investigated for treating complex wastewater containing toxic heavy metal Cr6+ and organic compound phenol. This study is first of its kind illustrating coupled removal in single-step with H2O2 playing a major role as an oxidant and reductant. The mechanism involved was electron transfer from Fe0/2+ to Cr6+ resulting in Fe2+/3+ which in turn was consumed for phenol oxidation returning as Fe2+ into the system for further Cr6+ reduction. While comparing, single-step simultaneous removal of Cr6+ and phenol showed better performance in terms of pollutant removal, Fe2+/3+ recurrent reaction and precipitation generation, double-tep sequential removal performed better in iron active-corrosion time. It was also observed that the entire redox cycle of Cr6+-Cr3+-Cr6+ was reusable for co-contaminant phenol degradation at all pH with the recurrence of Fe2+-Fe3+-Fe2+. The proposed technique was checked for its viability in a single batch reactor and the complex chemistry of the reactions are unfolded by conducting chemical speciation and mass balance study at every stage of reaction. The unique functioning of mZVI was proven with micro-analysis of ZVI's surface and compared with granular ZVI, cZVI. With increase in time duration, Hg accumulation also increased and mainly accumulated in root followed by stem > leaf however, for FA50 it was root > leaf > stem. Among FA treated combinations, the relative elongation ratio of root and shoot, and their dry biomass increased with increase in time and were significantly higher for FA25 and FA50 combinations. With increase in percentage of FA and exposure duration, the Hg accumulation also increased (R2 > 0.964) and thus Hg content in substrate decreased (R2 > 0.852). The bioconcentration factor of root was enhanced with exposure duration however no changes were observed for TF suggesting maximum phytostabilization potential (0.58 mg Hg kg-1 plant-1). Non-detrimental effect of Hg and higher PRP of 2.62 mg Hg kg-1 plant-1 suggests Indian mustard as a promising accumulator species for phytoremediation of FA-contaminated sites when grown on equal proportion of FA and GS, and can show higher PRP if exposed for longer duration. In the present study, we aimed to understand the regulatory characteristics of regulatory B10 cells and how these cells are involved in the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Here, we chose CD19+CD24hiCD27+ as the phenotype of regulatory B10 cells. We found that the frequencies of CD19+CD24hiCD27+ regulatory B10 cells were decreased and that their IL-10-producing function was impaired in patients with RA compared with healthy controls (HCs). The impairment in CD19+CD24hiCD27+ B10 cells was partially attributed to the decreased expression of CD27 induced by the upregulated CD70 expression on CD19 + B cells and CD4 + T cells. The proportion of CD19+CD24hiCD27+ regulatory B10 cells could be restored by blocking the CD70-CD27 interaction with an anti-CD70 antibody. Furthermore, the CD70-CD27 interaction significantly elevated IL-10 expression and might compensate for the decreased number of CD19+CD24hiCD27+ B cells. Hence, the CD70-CD27 interaction might play a critical role in the numerical and functional impairments of regulatory B10 cells, thus contributing to RA pathogenesis. In conclusion, the change in CD19+CD24hiCD27+ regulatory B10 cells in RA was only a consequence, not the cause, of RA development, but the increased expression of CD70 might be the culprit.

The impairment in CD19+CD24hiCD27+ B10 cells was partially attributed to the decreased expression of CD27 induced by the upregulated CD70 expression on CD19 + B cells and CD4 + T cells. The proportion of CD19+CD24hiCD27+ regulatory B10 cells could be restored by blocking the CD70-CD27 interaction with an anti-CD70 antibody. Furthermore, the CD70-CD27 interaction significantly elevated IL-10 expression and might compensate for the decreased number of CD19+CD24hiCD27+ B cells. Hence, the CD70-CD27 interaction might play a critical role in the numerical and functional impairments of regulatory B10 cells, thus contributing to RA pathogenesis. Results Of HCCs assessed, 32.6% (29 of 89) had MVI at histopathologic findings. Two-reader agreement, as assessed by pairwise Cohen κ statistics, varied as a function of feature and imaging phase, ranging from 0.02 to 0.6; three-reader Fleiss κ varied from -0.17 to 0.56. For RVI and TTPVI, the best single-reader performance had sensitivity and specificity of 52% and 77% and 67% and 74%, respectively. Here, we demonstrate that the pyrene functionalization influences graphene's electrical properties by yielding partial formation of bilayer graphene which was confirmed by Raman 2D spectrum. Based on this observation, we introduce quadratic fit analysis of the nonlinear electrical behavior of pyrene-functionalized graphene near the Dirac point. Compared to the conventional linear fit analysis of the transconductance at a distance from the Dirac point, the quadratic fit analysis of the nonlinear transconductance near the Dirac point increased the overall protein detection sensitivity by a factor of 5. Furthermore, we show that both pyrene linkers and gating voltage near the Dirac point play critical roles in sensitive and reliable detection of proteins' biological activities with the graphene biosensors.Snake species within the Bothrops complex (sensu lato) are of medical relevance in Latin America, but knowledge on their venom characteristics is limited, or even unavailable, for some taxa. This study compared the venoms of twelve species, through chromatographic and electrophoretic profiles, as well as proteolytic and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activities. Also, proteomic profiles were analyzed for nine of the venoms using a shotgun approach. Results unveiled conspicuous differences in the expression of venom PLA2s among species, six of them presenting scarce levels as judged by RP-HPLC profiles. Since most species within the bothropoid lineage possess venoms with high to intermediate abundances of this protein family, our findings suggest the existence of a phenotypic duality in the expression of venom PLA2s within the Bothrops (sensu lato) complex. Bothrops barnetti and Bothrocophias andianus venoms, very scarce in PLA2s, were shown to lack significant myotoxic activity, highlighting that the observed variability in PLA2 expression bears toxicological correlations with effects attributed to these proteins. Finally, an attempt to identify phylogenetic relationships of bothropoid species from Perú presenting low- or high-PLA2 venom phenotypes showed an interspersed pattern, thus precluding a simple phylogenetic interpretation of this venom compositional dichotomy.

Study design Children ages 1-17 with SCA from 6 states having ≥3 Medicaid claims with a SCA diagnosis within a year (2005-2012) were included. Children with mental health diagnoses were identified with ≥1 mental health encounter. Poisson and logistic regression models with general estimating equations (GEE) assessed the relationship between mental health diagnoses, health care utilization, and receipt of age-appropriate preventive care. Results 7,963 children with SCA were identified (22,424 person-years); 1,593 person-years (7.1%) included ≥1 mental health diagnosis. Children with a mental health diagnosis were more likely to have inpatient admissions (IRR 1.46, 95% CI 1.36, 1.56) and outpatient (IRR 1.27, 95% CI 1.21, 1.34), emergency department (IRR 1.39, 95% CI 1.30, 1.48), and well-child visits (IRR 1.19, 95% CI 1.11, 1.29). Those with a mental health diagnosis were more likely to receive hydroxyurea therapy (OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.03, 1.33) and less likely to receive TCD screenings (OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.68, 0.93). In this study, we evaluated the usefulness of GeneSoC®, a compact, high-speed reciprocal flow RT-qPCR system, for the detection of SARS-CoV-2. Our results support the use of this system for the rapid identification of SARS-CoV-2. This approach can contribute to the strategic selection of initial management strategies for patients with COVID-19.Super-spreading events in an outbreak can change the nature of an epidemic. Therefore, it is useful for public health teams to determine if an ongoing outbreak has any contribution from such events, which may be amenable to interventions. We estimated the basic reproductive number (R0) and the dispersion factor (k) from empirical data on clusters of epidemiologically-linked COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore. This allowed us to infer the presence or absence of super-spreading events during the early phase of these outbreaks. The relatively large values of k implied that large cluster sizes, compatible with super-spreading, were unlikely.Healthcare systems are expanding, no longer bound by county, state or country, thus necessitating the importance of consistent and standardized guidelines for the management and control of communicable diseases, including influenza. The prognostic significance of PVR/CD155 and CD274/PD-L1 expression was assessed bioinformatically in HGSC and 32 other cancers in The Cancer Genome Atlas. Results T cells from HGSC frequently co-expressed TIGIT and PD-1, and the ratio of TIGIT to PD-1 expression increased markedly after in vitro expansion with a clinically relevant protocol. CD155 was commonly expressed on malignant epithelium in HGSC and showed a negative or non-significant association with TIL. In contrast, PD-L1 was predominantly expressed by tumor-associated macrophages and positively associated with TIL. These contrasts between CD155 and PD-L1 were seen across HGSC patients, across metastatic sites within individual patients, and even within individual tumor deposits. PVR/CD155 and CD274/PD-L1 exhibited divergent prognostic associations across diverse cancer types in TCGA, including HGSC. The following were measured at baseline and 4-weeks after propranolol systolic function by the ejection intraventricular pressure difference (EIVPD), hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG), cardiopulmonary pressures, RPP, and sympathetic activation. Results EIVPD was elevated at baseline (RA 4.5 [2.8-5.7] and DRA 4.2 [3.1-5.7] mmHg; normal 2.4-3.6 mmHg) and directly related to the severity of vasodilation and sympathetic activation. NSBB led to similar reductions in heart rate and HVPG in both groups. NSBB reduced EIPVD in RA but not in DRA (-20% vs. -2%, p0.40, all p less then 0.
