    The objective of the study is to investigate the effects of transmission control efforts of the Philippine Government through implementation of Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) on curtailing the exponential growth of the Corona Virus (Covid-19). Also, this study provides forecast of transmission rate of Covid-19 incorporating the heterogeneous characteristics of the group of population according to age.

    The heterogeneous-mixing model was used to forecast the transmission rate of Covid-19 and effect of Enhanced Community Quarantine in various Local Government Units (LGUs) in the National Capital Region (NCR), Philippines.

    The result of the study revealed that the mobility of people has significant contribution to the transmission rate of Covid-19. The result of the study revealed that the mobilization of workers, who are exempted in ECQ, would greatly affect the transmission of disease to those who are in the senior citizen group. The increase in the confirmed cases of Covid-19 is associated with the transmission from those workers, who are exempted from ECQ to senior citizens and the young age group. LGUs in the NCR, Philippines will experience a different pattern of peak periods ranging from the third week of April to the last week of May.

    This study concluded that in order to achieve the containment of the spread of Covid-19 in the Philippines, the government should be stricter in implementation of the ECQ and incorporate the different pattern of transmission of Covid-19 in deciding whether to extend or to lift the ECQ.

    Since the onset of the COVID-19 in China, forecasting and projections of the epidemic based on epidemiological models have been in the centre stage. Researchers have used various models to predict the maximum extent of the number of cases and the time of peak. This yielded varying numbers. This paper aims to estimate the effective reproduction number (R) for COVID-19 over time using incident number of cases that are reported by the government.

    The basic reproduction number (R
    ) for India was estimated at 1.379 (95% CI 1.375, 1.384). This was 1.450 (1.441, 1.460) for Maharashtra, 1.444 (1.430, 1.460) for Gujarat, 1.297 (1.284, 1.310) for ***** and 1.405 (1.389, 1.421) for Tamil Nadu. In India, the R at the first week from March 2-8, 2020 was 3.2. It remained around 2 units for three weeks, from March 9-29, 2020.     Ever since the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak emerged in China, there has been several attempts to predict the epidemic across the world with varying degrees of accuracy and reliability. This paper aims to carry out a short-term projection of new cases; forecast the maximum number of active cases for India and selected high-incidence states; and evaluate the impact of three weeks lock down period using different models.

    We used Logistic growth curve model for short term prediction; SIR models to forecast the maximum number of active cases and peak time; and Time Interrupted Regression model to evaluate the impact of lockdown and other interventions.

    The predicted cumulative number of cases for India was 58,912 (95% CI 57,960, 59,853) by May 08, 2020 and the observed number of cases was 59,695. The model predicts a cumulative number of 1,02,974 (95% CI 1,01,987, 1,03,904) cases by May 22, 2020. As per SIR model, the maximum number of active cases is projected to be 57,449 on May 18, 2020. The time interrupted regression model indicates a decrease of about 149 daily new cases after the lock down period, which is statistically not significant.

Results showed that the amounts of PLFA 161ω5 and NLFA 161ω5 were significantly influenced by drought stress conditions. The NLFA 161ω5/PLFA 161ω5 ratio showed a dramatic decrease (-62%) with the application of water deficit stress, indicating that AM fungi allocated low carbon to storage structures under stress conditions. In this paper, we address these two issues at the same time by proposing a neuro-evolutionary approach with an agile evaluation method for the fast evolution of robust deep architectures that avoid mode collapsing. The computation of Pareto set approximations with GANs is chosen as a suitable benchmark to evaluate the quality of our approach. Furthermore, we demonstrate the consistency, scalability, and generalization capabilities of the proposed method, which shows its potential applications to many areas. We finally readdress the issue of designing this kind of models by analyzing the characteristics of the best performing GAN specifications, and conclude with a set of general guidelines. This results in a reduction of the many-dimensional problem of structural manual design or automated search.

  • Nanomaterials have been widely applied in the field of cancer imaging and therapy. However, conventional nanoparticles including micelles and liposomes may suffer the issue of dissociation in the circulation. In contrast, crosslinked nanogels the structures of which are covalently crosslinked have better physiological stability than micelles and liposomes, making them more suitable for cancer theranostics. In this review, we summarize recent advances in crosslinked nanogels for cancer imaging and therapy. The applications of nanogels in drug and gene delivery as well as development of novel cancer therapeutic methods are first introduced, followed by the introduction of applications in optical and multimodal imaging, and imaging-guided cancer therapy. The conclusion and future direction in this field are discussed at the end of this review.The similarities between the depressive symptoms of Major Depressive Disorders (MDD) and Bipolar Disorders (BD) suggest these disorders have some commonality in their molecular pathophysiologies, which is not apparent from the risk genes shared between MDD and BD. This is significant, given the growing literature suggesting that changes in non-coding RNA may be important in both MDD and BD, because they are causing dysfunctions in the control of biochemical pathways that are affected in both disorders. Therefore, understanding the changes in non-coding RNA in MDD and BD will lead to a better understanding of how and why these disorders develop. Furthermore, as a significant number of individuals suffering with MDD and BD do not respond to medication, identifying non-coding RNA that are altered by the drugs used to treat these disorders offer the potential to identify biomarkers that could predict medication response. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are one of many non-coding RNAs. These are single-stranded with a length of 19-25 nucleotides and can influence various cellular processes and play an important role in various diseases. Therefore, in this article, we review the different functions of different miRNA in bone metabolism and osteoporosis to understand their mechanism of action for the development of possible therapeutics.Early diagnostics and treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency (B12D) in infants, mainly maternally conditioned, is crucial in preventing possible developmental delay and neurological deficits. Currently, B12D is rarely listed in regular newborn screening panels and mostly regarded as an incidental finding. The aim of this study was to evaluate a targeted newborn screening strategy for detection of suspected B12D. A decision strategy based on the primary parameters propionylcarnitine and methionine for selection of samples to be analyzed for total homocysteine by mass spectrometry was established. Therefore, 93,116 newborns were initially screened. Concentrations of vitamin B12 and holotranscobalamin in serum were obtained from clinical follow-up analyses of recalled newborns. Moreover, an extremely sensitive mass spectrometric method to quantify methylmalonic acid from the dried blood spots was developed. Overall, 0.15% of newborns were screened positive for suspected B12D, of which 64% had vitamin B12 concentrations below 148 pM. We also determined a cutoff value for methylmalonic acid in dried blood spots indicative for B12D in infants. Overall, we calculated a prevalence of 92/100,000 for suspected B12D in the Austrian newborns. In conclusion, we present a screening algorithm including second-tier measurement of total homocysteine that allows detection of low B12 serum concentrations with a high detection rate and low false-positive rate.To assess activity and participation for children in Taiwan's Disability Eligibility Determination System (DEDS), we developed a questionnaire, the Functioning Disability Evaluation Scale (FUNDES-Child), based on the Child and Adolescent Scale of Participation (CASP). The study follows a methodology research design to investigate the construct validity of the frequency and independence dimensions of FUNDES-Child 7.0. Two samples were randomly stratified from the databank of 13,835 children and youth with disabilities aged 6.0-17.9 years to examine structural validity by exploratory factor analysis (EFA, n = 4111, mean age of 11.3 ± 3.5) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA, n = 4823, mean age of 11.4 ± 3.5)). EFA indicated a 4-factor structure for the frequency dimension (51.3% variance explained) and a 2-factor structure for the independence dimension (53.6% variance explained). The CFA indicated that the second-order factor structures of both dimensions were more parsimonious with adequate fit indices (Goodness fit Index, GFI; Normed Fit Index, NFI; Comparative Fit Index, CFI; and Tucker-Lewis Index, TLI ≥ 0.95, Root Mean Square Error of Approximation, RMSEA less then 0.06). Results provide evidence that the participation part of FUNDES-Child 7.0 has acceptable structural validity for use in Taiwan's DEDS. Utility of FUNDES-Child 7.0 in rehabilitation, welfare, and educational services needs further study.

  • Objective To investigate effect of MR field strength on texture features of cerebral T2 fluid attenuated inversion recovery (T2-FLAIR) images. Methods We acquired cerebral 3D T2-FLAIR images of thirty patients who were diagnosed with ischemic white matter lesion (WML) with MR-1.5T and MR-3.0T scanners. Histogram texture features which included mean signal intensity (Mean), Skewness and Kurtosis, and gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) texture features which included angular second moment (ASM), Contrast, Correlation, Inverse difference moment (IDM) and Entropy, of regions of interest located in the area of WML and normal white matter (NWM) were measured by ImageJ software. The texture parameters acquired with MR-1.5T scanning were compared with MR-3.0T scanning. Results The Mean of both WML and NWM obtained with MR-1.5T scanning was significantly lower than that acquired with MR-3.0T (P0.05). The objective of this study was to determine if expression of inhibitory molecules was correlated with treatment by dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in an in vivo BALB/c mouse model of experimental autoimmune Graves' disease.Methods Female BALB/c **** were immunized three times with thyroid stimulating hormone receptor A-subunit encoded by adenovirus to establish a Graves' disease model. Three different doses of DHT or a matching placebo were administered by implantation of slow-release pellets a week before the first immunization. Four weeks after the third immunization, the **** were euthanatized, and then the spleen and thymus were removed. Total thyroxine and free thyroxine levels in serum of **** were detected using a radioimmunoassay kit. Real-time polymerase chain reactivs. 24.05%±2.587%; t=2.804, P=0.012).     Objective To investigate effect of MR field strength on texture features of cerebral T2 fluid attenuated inversion recovery (T2-FLAIR) images. Methods We acquired cerebral 3D T2-FLAIR images of thirty patients who were diagnosed with ischemic white matter lesion (WML) with MR-1.5T and MR-3.0T scanners. Histogram texture features which included mean signal intensity (Mean), Skewness and Kurtosis, and gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) texture features which included angular second moment (ASM), Contrast, Correlation, Inverse difference moment (IDM) and Entropy, of regions of interest located in the area of WML and normal white matter (NWM) were measured by ImageJ software. The texture parameters acquired with MR-1.5T scanning were compared with MR-3.0T scanning. Results The Mean of both WML and NWM obtained with MR-1.5T scanning was significantly lower than that acquired with MR-3.0T (P0.05). ASM, Correlation and IDM of both WML and NWM acquired with MR-1.5T revealed significantly lower values than those with MR-3.0T (P less then 0.001), while Contrast and Entropy acquired with MR-1.5T showed significantly higher values than those with MR-3.0T (P less then 0.001). Aim of this study is to understand the cortical mechanism underlying the negative symptoms seen in patients with schizophrenia such as inactivity, restricted behavioral repertoire, by using functional MRI (fMRI) to determine whether the action origin words have a different representation in the brain regions of patients with schizophrenia and healthy individuals. Our hypothesis is that restriction in the repertoire of movement and behavior and the failure of words of "action" than words of "object" are interrelated through the same cortical mechanisms. If this hypothesis is correct, the reason for not taking action in patients with schizophrenia may be improper definition of the action (verb). Methods fMRI study was conducted with 12 patients with schizophrenia and 12 healthy individuals. fMRI recording was performed after applying positive and negative syndrome (PANSS) scale, Calgary depression scale,vation in patients with schizophrenia than healthy individuals. There is no difference between patients with schizophrenia and healthy volunteers in terms of correctly identified words and reaction time. Conclusion Considering the lack of difference between the groups in terms of number of correctly identified words and reaction time, and BA 44's role in recognition and imitation of action and being a part of the mirror neuron system, the significant inverse correlation between PANSS negative score and BA40 can be seen as an effort to compensate for BA44 inadequate activity through BA40. Methods A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in 2017 in Ujjain, India, which included 6308 children up to 18 years of age living in 2518 households. Data were collected using a pretested, semi-structured, proforma from the parents of the included children. Results The overall incidence of home injury was 7.78% (95% confidence interval [CI] 7.12-8.84) in the last 1 year, ie, 2015-16. The incidence was significantly higher at 5-10 years of age (odds ratio [OR] 2.91, 95% CI 1.75-4.85; P 10; aOR 0.69, 95% CI 0.56-0.86; P less then 0.001 and aOR 0.67, CI 0.48-0.94; P less then 0.023, respectively), cooking area (combined vs separate; aOR 0.82, 95% CI 0.68-1.00; P = 0.057), and whether mother is alive vs not alive (aOR 2.09, 95% CI 1.10-3.94; P = 0.023). Conclusion The incidence of fall injuries among children at home in Ujjain, India, was similar to other resource constraint settings. The incidence was higher in rural areas, in the age group of 5-10 years, and in families in which the mother was not alive. The association between eosinophilia and TB is not well known. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/tariquidar.html We have a case of the 9-year-old female present with abdominal pain in the right upper quadrant which is non-radiating associated with decreased appetite, weight loss, malaise and low-grade fever and vomiting of ingested of two weeks. On examination, she had severe wasting and hepatomegaly. On investigations, she had leukocytosis with 50% of eosinophilia, high ESR, multiple liver cysts (abdominal ultrasound and CT) and biopsy suggestive of TB. Finally, the patient started on anti-TB and her response was followed by clinical and laboratory parameters. After three weeks of treatment with anti-TB, she starts to gain weight, improve abdominal pain, appetite loss, and the investigation also normalized (leukocyte and the eosinophil become normalized, ESR corrected). The patient was to follow up for two years in the clinic and finally discharged. The coexistence of eosinophilia and TB in our patient is suggested because of the biopsy results in conjunction with the improvement of peripheral blood eosinophilia with anti-TB treatment. The central nervous system involvement is explained with Sydenham chorea in which case the patient manifests with purposeless and choreiform movements aggravated by stress. Apart from this movement disorder the patient will also demonstrate emotional liability and motor manifestations. It is seen more commonly in children and young adolescent girls. It usually manifests as an isolated phenomenon called pure chorea, without evidence of active rheumatic fever; the other rare form of which is a type of acute rheumatic fever. Clinical Description This case report is about a nine-year-old female child presenting with two weeks of complaint of abnormal purposeless, non-rhythmic movement of extremities and the face, with failure to communicate. At presentation, she had non-pruritic skin lesions that had appeared a day prior to admission. The skin lesions were circular, red in color, and painless, involving the abdomen, and lower chest anteriorly, and extending to all extremities and the ****. Two months previously she had a history of sore throat and treatment with unspecified P.O. medication. Antistreptolysin O (ASO) antibody was 430 Todd units/mL and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate was 58 mm/h. Echocardiography study revealed carditis (no evidence of chronicity) with moderate to severe MR, mild TR, no pulmonary hypertension, good biventricular function, and no pericardial effusion. Conclusion In this case report, we would like to show the central nervous system manifestation of rheumatic fever called Sydenham chorea seen together with erythema marginatum and other features of rheumatic fever. © 2020 Tsega Desta and Naizgi.

  • There are very few studies investigating the dermoscopic aspect of nail involvement in lichen planus and these studies described dermoscopic features of only clinically visible nail involvement in lichen planus.

    To reveal subtle dermoscopic nail findings in patients with lichen planus.

    The study included 40 patients with lichen planus and 40 healthy volunteers. All fingernails of the patients and healthy volunteers were examined by a handheld dermoscope and the findings detected were recorded. The patients were grouped by age, gender, disease duration and extent of the disease. The statistical analysis was performed using Chi square test.

    82.5% of the patients and 17.5% of the healthy volunteers showed at least one dermoscopic nail finding. The frequency of multiple splinter haemorrhage (
    < 0.05), multiple leukonychia (
    < 0.05), longitudinal erythronychia (
    < 0.05), prominent hyponychial vascular structures (
    < 0.05) and onycholysis (
    < 0.05) observed in the patients group washen planus is more than known. Dermoscopic imaging of the nails of all patients with lichen planus may help establish early diagnosis and treatment to avoid permanent nail damage.
    Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by the complex interaction of genetic, immune and environmental factors such as food and airborne allergens. The atopy patch test (APT) is a useful way to determine delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions to food and aeroallergens. Many studies have also suggested that food additives are associated with dermatologic adverse reactions and the aggravation of pre-existing atopic dermatitis symptoms.

    To elucidate the contact sensitivity to food additives in children suffering from AD by using standardized atopy patch testing.

    A total of 45 children with AD and 20 healthy children have been enrolled. All the children have regularly consumed food containing additives, and were subjected to atopy patch tests.

    In total, 28 (62%) children with AD and 4 (20%) healthy children have had positive patch test reactions to ≥ 1 allergens. There has been a significant difference (
    = 0.04) between the groups in terms of the positivity rate in the patch test and the most common allergen that elicited positive patch test results in the AD group was azorubine (
    = 11, 24.4%,
    = 0.014).

    In our study, contact sensitivity was detected more frequently in AD patients. Food additives may play a role in the development and exacerbation of AD. Atopy patch testing with food additives can be useful in the treatment and follow-up of children with AD.

    Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is characterized by the onset of symptoms which are not induced by specific triggers, but are rather spontaneous. A considerable number of patients report that foods or food additives might be responsible for their chronic urticaria.

    To determine the prevalence of sensitization to food additives in children with CSU using atopy patch tests (ATP).

    Atopy patch tests for 23 different food additives were applied to 120 children with CSU and 61 healthy controls.

    Seventeen (14.1%) children with CSU were sensitized with food additives. None of the control group had positive APT.

To elucidate the contact sensitivity to food additives in children suffering from AD by using standardized atopy patch testing. A total of 45 children with AD and 20 healthy children have been enrolled. All the children have regularly consumed food containing additives, and were subjected to atopy patch tests. In total, 28 (62%) children with AD and 4 (20%) healthy children have had positive patch test reactions to ≥ 1 allergens. There has been a significant difference ( = 0.04) between the groups in terms of the positivity rate in the patch test and the most common allergen that elicited positive patch test results in the AD group was azorubine ( = 11, 24.4%, = 0.014). To determine the prevalence of sensitization to food additives in children with CSU using atopy patch tests (ATP). Atopy patch tests for 23 different food additives were applied to 120 children with CSU and 61 healthy controls. Seventeen (14.1%) children with CSU were sensitized with food additives.   • No significant difference was found in the clinical efficacy of HOME-DU in infertile and RPL patients.Cannabis use through smoking, vaping, or ingestion is increasing, but only limited studies have investigated the resulting exposure to harmful chemicals. N-acetyl-S-(2-cyanoethyl)-L-cysteine (2CYEMA), a urinary metabolite of acrylonitrile, a possible carcinogen, is elevated in the urine of past-30-day cannabis users compared to non-cannabis users. Five frequent and five occasional cannabis users smoked and vaped cannabis on separate days; one also consumed cannabis orally. Urine samples were collected before and up to 72 h post dose and urinary 2CYEMA was quantified. We compared 2CYEMA pre-exposure levels, maximum concentration, time at maximum concentration for occasional versus frequent users following different exposure routes, and measured half-life of elimination. Smoking cannabis joints rapidly (within 10 min) increased 2CYEMA in the urine of occasional cannabis users, but not in frequent users. Urine 2CYEMA did not consistently increase following vaping or ingestion in either study group. Cigarette smokers had high pre-exposure concentrations of 2CYEMA. Following cannabis smoking, the half-lives of 2CYEMA ranged from 2.5 to 9.0 h. 2CYEMA is an effective biomarker of cannabis smoke exposure, including smoke from a single cannabis joint, however, not from vaping or when consumed orally. In an acute myocardial infarction (AMI), the left circumflex coronary artery of New Zealand White rabbits (n = 9) was occluded by ligature for 1 h, followed by reperfusion. A specific care protocol was applied before, during, and after the intervention, and the results were compared with those of a sham operated group (n = 7). After 5 weeks, programmed stimulation and high-resolution mapping were performed on isolated and perfused hearts using the Langendorff technique. The infarct size determined by 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride inside of the area at risk (thioflavin-S) was then determined. The area at risk was similar in both groups (54.33% (experimental infarct group) vs. 58.59% (sham group), ns). The infarct size was 73.16% as a percentage of the risk area. The experimental infarct group had a higher inducibility of ventricular arrhythmias (100% vs. 43% in the sham group, p = 0.009). The results revealed 1103 and 1347 transcripts classified as stable and unstable candidates, respectively.     The original English form was translated according to guidelines. We included patients with ACL injury undergoing reconstruction in two centers over 3 years. Subjects completed the translated MARS, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective knee form and EuroQol EQ5D. The examining physician completed the Tegner Lysholm scale as an objective evaluation. Re-testing was obtained after one month. We used Spearman`s correlation to evaluate construct validity and reproducibility, Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency and intraclass correlation for test-retest reliability.

  • Social media data are increasingly utilised as a low-cost alternative to visitor surveys in characterising nature-based recreation. However, the information available on individual users is limited and typically does not include provenance, restricting the potential applications and impact of the data. Here we investigate a methodology to estimate social media visitors' home locations at various spatial scales and apply it to the entire network of national parks in Germany. We compare predicted visitor provenance to representative onsite survey data and explore group-specific spatial and temporal patterns of recreation as characterised by users' geotagged photographs. The HAIX-Zr resin was prepared by impregnating ZrO2 nanoparticles on polymeric anion exchanger resin. Fluoride uptake by HAIX-Zr was quite rapid, 60% removal was obtained within 30 min. Kinetics of fluoride uptake by HAIX-Zr resin followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and adsorption data fitted best to Freundlich adsorption isotherm model. Maximum fluoride uptake capacity was observed as 12.0 mg/g. The defluoridation capacity of the resin decreases with increase in solution pH. The co-existing anions like chloride, phosphate, bicarbonate, nitrate, and sulphate at 100 mg/L concentration significantly affected fluoride removal and bicarbonate showed the highest interference. Continuous flow packed bed experiments were performed with real groundwater. To maintain a lower pH, weak acid cation exchange resin (INDION-236) was used before HAIX-Zr. It was observed that reducing the pH of the sample water to 4-4.5, increased the number of treated bed volumes fifteen times. Regeneration of fluoride-containing resin was done by passing 3% NaOH and 3% NaCl solution through an exhausted resin bed. While biodiversity offsetting has a long tradition, soils have rarely been considered in the accounting. Considering the crucial role of soil for ecosystem functioning and biodiversity and the increasing pressure on soil resources, we investigate how a NNL strategy building on a soil-based ecosystem services index can help steer sustainable spatial development. An ecosystem services' soil quality index allows to explicitly address the interests of a broad range of stakeholder on soil uses. Using a market-driven spatial planning instrument based on a land price fee linked to the soil quality index, we demonstrate how soil quality loss and related ecosystem services could be reduced by up to 60% compared to current practice in a case study in Switzerland. More importantly, the suggested instrument allows to account for the spatial variability of the supply of the ecosystem services and the diversity of stakeholder demands for various soil qualities. We close with a discussion on the consequences of implementing a soil-based NNL strategy for spatial development and its generic application for steering settlement development.In this study, we prepared Ti4O7 porous electrodes with continuous layered structures characterized by different layer-to-layer distance (from 2 to 10 μm) but the same total void fraction (88-90%), to modulate the electrodes' permeability and the volumetric electrochemical surface area (from 90 to 840 cm2 cm-3). These platforms were evaluated as anodes in the electro-oxidation (EO) of bentazon in a three-electrode cell under galvanostatic conditions, operated both in traditional batch (TB) or batch recycle flow-through (BRFT) modes. The performance was significantly enhanced when the liquid was recirculated through the lamellar structure of the electrodes. In BRFT mode, the electrode interlayer gap was found to be a key factor to control the bentazon and total organic carbon (TOC) conversions. For the best conditions evaluated (BRFT, 10 μm-interlayered Ti4O7 electrodes with a volumetric surface area of 90 cm2 cm-3), the effect of the applied current (1 or 3 mA) and liquid flow rate (10, 12 or 14 mL. min-1) was investigated. Specific energy consumption (SEC) values were estimated to reveal the performance of each of the EO treatments from an energetic point of view. The use of 10 μm-interlayered Ti4O7 electrodes at 1 mA in BRFT mode at a flow rate of 14 mL min-1 showed the best results, yielding 85% bentazon removal, 57% mineralization and SEC values of 0.006 kWh.gTOC-1 after 6 h of treatment. The present study aims to evaluate the feasibility of using an integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) system as an alternative post-treatment technology to mitigate the environmental impact of such effluents. For this purpose, a pilot plant composed of a UASB (120 L) followed by an IFAS (66 L) system was operated for 407 days. Special attention was paid to the suspended biomass retention capacity and the dissolved methane and nitrogen removal potential of the IFAS post-treatment system. Furthermore, the role of carriers on denitrification and nitrification processes and the microbial communities present in the biofilm were also analyzed.     Social media data are increasingly utilised as a low-cost alternative to visitor surveys in characterising nature-based recreation. However, the information available on individual users is limited and typically does not include provenance, restricting the potential applications and impact of the data. Here we investigate a methodology to estimate social media visitors' home locations at various spatial scales and apply it to the entire network of national parks in Germany. We compare predicted visitor provenance to representative onsite survey data and explore group-specific spatial and temporal patterns of recreation as characterised by users' geotagged photographs. The present study reports the feasibility of zirconium impregnated hybrid anion exchange resin (HAIX-Zr) for treating fluoride contaminated groundwater. The HAIX-Zr resin was prepared by impregnating ZrO2 nanoparticles on polymeric anion exchanger resin. Fluoride uptake by HAIX-Zr was quite rapid, 60% removal was obtained within 30 min. Kinetics of fluoride uptake by HAIX-Zr resin followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and adsorption data fitted best to Freundlich adsorption isotherm model. Maximum fluoride uptake capacity was observed as 12.0 mg/g. The defluoridation capacity of the resin decreases with increase in solution pH. The co-existing anions like chloride, phosphate, bicarbonate, nitrate, and sulphate at 100 mg/L concentration significantly affected fluoride removal and bicarbonate showed the highest interference. Continuous flow packed bed experiments were performed with real groundwater. To maintain a lower pH, weak acid cation exchange resin (INDION-236) was used before HAIX-Zr. It was observed that reducing the pH of the sample water to 4-4.5, increased the number of treated bed volumes fifteen times. Regeneration of fluoride-containing resin was done by passing 3% NaOH and 3% NaCl solution through an exhausted resin bed. The results revealed that HAIX-Zr can effectively remove fluoride from groundwater.Degradation of ecosystems and the related loss of ecosystem services have called for new policies to achieve no net loss (NNL) of or even net gain between detrimental environmental impacts and restoration or preservation measures. While biodiversity offsetting has a long tradition, soils have rarely been considered in the accounting. Considering the crucial role of soil for ecosystem functioning and biodiversity and the increasing pressure on soil resources, we investigate how a NNL strategy building on a soil-based ecosystem services index can help steer sustainable spatial development. An ecosystem services' soil quality index allows to explicitly address the interests of a broad range of stakeholder on soil uses. Using a market-driven spatial planning instrument based on a land price fee linked to the soil quality index, we demonstrate how soil quality loss and related ecosystem services could be reduced by up to 60% compared to current practice in a case study in Switzerland. More importantly, the suggested instrument allows to account for the spatial variability of the supply of the ecosystem services and the diversity of stakeholder demands for various soil qualities. We close with a discussion on the consequences of implementing a soil-based NNL strategy for spatial development and its generic application for steering settlement development.In this study, we prepared Ti4O7 porous electrodes with continuous layered structures characterized by different layer-to-layer distance (from 2 to 10 μm) but the same total void fraction (88-90%), to modulate the electrodes' permeability and the volumetric electrochemical surface area (from 90 to 840 cm2 cm-3). These platforms were evaluated as anodes in the electro-oxidation (EO) of bentazon in a three-electrode cell under galvanostatic conditions, operated both in traditional batch (TB) or batch recycle flow-through (BRFT) modes. The performance was significantly enhanced when the liquid was recirculated through the lamellar structure of the electrodes. In BRFT mode, the electrode interlayer gap was found to be a key factor to control the bentazon and total organic carbon (TOC) conversions. For the best conditions evaluated (BRFT, 10 μm-interlayered Ti4O7 electrodes with a volumetric surface area of 90 cm2 cm-3), the effect of the applied current (1 or 3 mA) and liquid flow rate (10, 12 or 14 mL. min-1) was investigated. Specific energy consumption (SEC) values were estimated to reveal the performance of each of the EO treatments from an energetic point of view. The use of 10 μm-interlayered Ti4O7 electrodes at 1 mA in BRFT mode at a flow rate of 14 mL min-1 showed the best results, yielding 85% bentazon removal, 57% mineralization and SEC values of 0.006 kWh.gTOC-1 after 6 h of treatment. This contribution highlights the use of layered Ti4O7 electrodes as a promising strategy for intensifying EO processes, pointing to a trade-off between the accessibility to the internal electrode structure and the volumetric electrode surface area to enhance the contact between the target molecules and the hydroxyl radicals physisorbed on the electrode surface, while minimizing simultaneously the energy requirements.One of the main drawbacks of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors that treat low-strength sewage at room temperature is related to the low quality of their effluents in terms of dissolved methane, organic matter, and nitrogen content. The present study aims to evaluate the feasibility of using an integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) system as an alternative post-treatment technology to mitigate the environmental impact of such effluents. For this purpose, a pilot plant composed of a UASB (120 L) followed by an IFAS (66 L) system was operated for 407 days. Special attention was paid to the suspended biomass retention capacity and the dissolved methane and nitrogen removal potential of the IFAS post-treatment system. Furthermore, the role of carriers on denitrification and nitrification processes and the microbial communities present in the biofilm were also analyzed.
