Hierarchical regression analyses examined whether demographic characteristics, pandemic-related adversity, and components of psychological flexibility were associated with general and peritraumatic distress. Results indicated that higher pandemic-related adversity, lower openness to experience, and lower behavioral awareness were significantly associated with higher general distress. Greater pandemic-related adversity, lower openness to experience, lower behavioral awareness, and higher valued action were significantly associated with higher peritraumatic distress. Adding the components of psychological flexibility to the model increased the amount of variance accounted for in both measures of distress. The results indicated that psychological flexibility components may be particularly important targets for prevention and intervention efforts in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Transdiagnostic interventions, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, that target psychological flexibility may be useful as the impact of the pandemic continues to unfold.While the rapid expansion of telemedicine in response to the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the impressive ability of health systems to adapt quickly to new complexities, it also raises important concerns about how to implement these novel modalities equitably. In this article, we review recent policy changes and outline important recommendations that governments and health care systems can adopt to improve access to telemedicine and to tailor the use of these technologies to best meet the needs of underserved patients. We suggest that by making health equity integral to the implementation of telemedicine now, it will help to ensure that all can benefit from its use going forward and that this will be increasingly integral to care delivery.
    Coronavirus COVID-19 is spreading very fast in Brazil, requiring innovative strategies for the fast deployment of disinfectants. Panic in population triggered by COVID-19 has caused a shortage of alcohol-based hand sanitizers and disinfectants in many cities of Brazil. Despite the governmental reaction against the outbreak, a risk of shortage of disinfectants still exists. The objective of this research is to investigate an alternative method for the fast deployment of alcohol-based disinfectants to protect the population against COVID-19.

    This research highlights the feasibility of disinfectant production from common ethanol available in Brazilian gas stations, as a last resort. A four-by-one (41) ratio of common alcohol diluted in water meets the minimum requirements set by health agencies for the alcoholic concentration of disinfectants.   • Augmented Reality has been utilized for surgical training. During the implementation, displaying instructional information at the right moment is critical for skill acquisition. We built a new surgical training platform combining augmented reality system (HoloLens, Microsoft) with an eye-tracker (Pupil labs, Germany). Our goal is to detect the moments of performance difficulty using the integrated eye-tracker so that the system could display instructions at the precise moment when the user is seeking instructional information during a surgical skill practice in simulation. In the paper, we describe the system design, system calibration and data transferring between these devices.Glioblastoma is one of the most frequent and aggressive primary tumor of glial brain tumors. Long non-coding RNA Prostate cancer-associated ncRNA transcript 6 (PCAT6) has been identified to influence the progression of many cancers, but its expression and functions in glioblastoma remain unclear. In this study, we intended to investigate the expression, functions and the corresponding mechanisms of PCAT6 in glioblastoma. We observed that PCAT6 expression was upregulated in glioblastoma tissues and cell lines and its high expression was due to the transcriptional activation by Yin Yang 1. miR-513 was a target of PCAT6 and Insulin like growth factor 2 mRNA binding protein 1 (IGF2BP1) was a target of miR-513. Hence, PCAT6 upregulated IGF2BP1 expression via miR-513 in a competing endogenous RNAs manner. PCAT6 and IGF2BP1 functioned as oncogenes while miR-513 acted as a tumor suppressor gene in glioblastoma. PCAT6 and miR-513 modulated the proliferation and survival of glioblastoma cells via AKT signaling by mediating IGF2BP1. IGF2BP1 raised the expression of PCAT6 by increasing its stability. In conclusion, our results indicate that PCAT6/miR-513/IGF2BP1 positive feedback loop plays a crucial role in facilitating glioblastoma progression.

In this study, we found that the overexpression of SlMYB75 regulated the accumulation of jasmonic acid (JA) and promoted the JA-mediated signaling pathway to resist B. cinerea infection. Moreover, the activities of peroxidase and superoxide dismutase, which were activated to scavenge hydrogen peroxide produced as a result of the B. cinerea infection, were enhanced in the transgenic tomato plants. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that the wax on the fruit skin surface was significantly decreased in the transgenic over, the activities of peroxidase and superoxide dismutase, which were activated to scavenge hydrogen peroxide produced as a result of the B. cinerea infection, were enhanced in the transgenic tomato plants.     Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is increasingly applied for early gastric cancer. ESD is a less invasive procedure and could be a radical treatment. However, in some cases, ESD cannot be completed owing to patient or technical factors. In such cases, which could have the potential for curative resection with ESD, standard gastrectomy is excessively invasive. Through closed laparoscopic and endoscopic cooperative surgery (LECS), gastric tumor can be precisely resected without exposing tumor cells to the abdominal cavity. Compared with standard gastrectomy, closed LECS is less invasive for the treatment of early gastric cancer.

    We performed closed LECS for three cases of early gastric cancer after failed ESD. In all three cases, ESD was interrupted owing to technical and patient factors, including perforation, respiratory failure, and carbon dioxide narcosis. All three cases successfully underwent closed LECS with complete tumor resection and showed an uneventful postoperative course. All three patients remain alive and have experienced no complications or recurrence, with a median follow up of 30 (14-30) months.

    Ectopic variceal bleeding is a rare but life-threatening complication of portal hypertension (PH). Oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy for colorectal cancer (CRC) is associated with sinusoidal obstruction syndrome of the liver, which can lead to PH.

    Here, we report a successful hybrid surgery that included intraoperative obliteration of ileal conduit stomal varices (ICSVs) for a 66-year-old woman with CRC and liver metastasis that had been treated multimodally during the previous 4years, including 17 courses of oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy. She was admitted to our hospital for massive hemorrhage from an ileal conduct stoma. Image findings showed ICSVs as a part of portosystemic shunt, which were afferently supplied from the superior mesenteric vein (SMV) and drained by the numerous cutaneous veins connected to the left femoral vein. Obliteration of the stomal varices by interventional radiologic techniques alone was inappropriate because of difficulties of cannulating the efferent cutaneous veins. We, therefore, performed hybrid surgery for the ICSV, which included cannulation into the SMV branch and antegrade obliteration of the varices with a 5% solution of ethanolamine oleate with iopamidol under blocking the SMV flow, using a vascular clip and ligation. Hemorrhage in her ileal conduit stoma disappeared completely.

  • Our novel and interactive tendon atlas highlights previously underappreciated heterogeneity between and within tendon cell populations. The atlas also serves as a resource to further the understanding of tendon extracellular matrix assembly and maintenance and in the design of therapies for tendinopathies.This paper reports on a mixed-methods study that utilized a convergent parallel design to examine Chinese graduate students' knowledge of and stance on plagiarism in English academic writing. A sample of 183 master's students from three broad disciplinary groupings at a major university in northeastern China completed a Perceptions of Plagiarism (PoP) survey, and another 13 graduate students participated in one-on-one semi-structured interviews. Quantitative and qualitative analyses revealed disciplinary differences in knowledge of subtle plagiarism, stance on plagiarism caused by inadequate academic ability and due to perceived low risks, and non-condemnatory attitudes toward plagiarism. There were also gender differences in knowledge of inappropriate referencing and attitudes toward plagiarism due to inadequate academic ability or perceived low risks. These results are interpreted in terms of training in English academic writing available, disciplinary knowledge-making practices, and gender characteristics. A sample of 183 master's students from three broad disciplinary groupings at a major university in northeastern China completed a Perceptions of Plagiarism (PoP) survey, and another 13 graduate students participated in one-on-one semi-structured interviews. Quantitative and qualitative analyses revealed disciplinary differences in knowledge of subtle plagiarism, stance on plagiarism caused by inadequate academic ability and due to perceived low risks, and non-condemnatory attitudes toward plagiarism. However, the high temperatures of the drying air in SDR can inactivate significant numbers of probiotic cells. Ultra-high-pressure homogenization (UHPH) processing can modify the configuration of proteins found in skim milk which may increase its protective properties as microencapsulating agent towards probiotic cells during SDR. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of microencapsulating probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum NRRL B-1927 (LP) with UHPH-treated skim milk after SDR or freeze drying (FD). Dispersions containing LP were made with either UHPH-treated (at 150 MPa or 300 MPa) or untreated skim milk and dried via concurrent SDR (CCSD), mixed-flow SDR (MXSD) or FD. Higher cell survival (%) of LP was found in powders microencapsulated with 150 MPa-treated skim milk than in those microencapsulated with non-UHPH-treated and 300 MPa-treated skim milk via FD followed by MXSD and CCSD, respectively. Increasing UHPH pressures increased the particle size of powders produced via CCSD; and reduced particle agglomeration of powders produced via MXSD and FD. This study demonstrated that UHPH processes improves the effectiveness of skim milk as a microencapsulating agent for LP, creating powders that could be used in probiotic foods.Analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties mediated by the κ opioid receptor (KOR) have been reported for oxadiazole imidazodiazepines.   • Electron microscopy is a powerful tool in the field of microbiology. It has played a key role in the rapid diagnosis of viruses in patient samples and has contributed significantly to the clarification of virus structure and function, helping to guide the public health response to emerging viral infections. In the present study, we used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to study the infectious cycle of SARS-CoV-2 in Vero E6 cells and we controlled some key findings by classical transmission electronic microscopy (TEM).     Electron microscopy is a powerful tool in the field of microbiology. It has played a key role in the rapid diagnosis of viruses in patient samples and has contributed significantly to the clarification of virus structure and function, helping to guide the public health response to emerging viral infections. In the present study, we used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to study the infectious cycle of SARS-CoV-2 in Vero E6 cells and we controlled some key findings by classical transmission electronic microscopy (TEM). The replication cycle of the virus was followed from 1 to 36 h post-infection. Our results revealed that SARS-CoV-2 infected the cells through membrane fusion.   • Inositol polyphosphates (IPs) is an important family of signaling molecules that regulate multiple cellular processes, such as chromatin remodeling, transcription and mRNA export. Inositol polyphosphate kinases, as the critical enzymes for production and transformation of IPs, directly determine the intracellular levels of IPs and therefore are involved in many cellular processes. However, its roles in Candida albicans, the leading fungal pathogen in human beings, remain to be investigated. In this study, we identified the inositol polyphosphate kinase Ipk1 in C. albicans and found that it localizes in the nucleus. Moreover, in the ipk1Δ/Δ mutant, the activity of mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes and the mitochondrial function was severely impaired, which were associated with down-regulation of mitochondrial function-related genes revealed by transcription profiling analysis. The ipk1Δ/Δ mutant also displayed hypersensitivity to a series of environmental stresses, such as antifungal drugs, oxidants, cell wall perturbing agents and macrophage attacks, followed by attenuation of virulence in a mouse systematic infection model. These findings firstly reported the importance of inositol polyphosphate kinase Ipk1 in C. albicans, especially its role in mitochondrial function maintenance and pathogenicity.

    We used data from the Health and Retirement Study (1998-2014) to estimate Sullivan-based life tables of cognitively healthy, cognitively impaired/no dementia (CIND), and dementia life expectancies by gender for older White, Black, U.S.-born and foreign-born Hispanic adults with less than high school, high school, and some college or more.

    White respondents lived a greater percentage of their remaining lives cognitive healthy than their minority Black or Hispanic counterparts, regardless of level of education. Among respondents with some college or more, versus less than high school, Black and U.S.-born Hispanic women exhibited the greatest increase (both 37 percentage points higher) in the proportion of total life expectancy spent cognitively healthy; whereas White women had the smallest increase (17 percentage points higher). For men, the difference between respondents with some college or more, versus less than high school, was greatest for Black men (35 percentage points higher) and was lowest for U.S.-born Hispanic men (21 percentage points higher).

    Our results provide evidence that the benefits of education on cognitive life expectancies are largest for Black men and women, and U.S.-born Hispanic women. The combination of extended longevity and rising prevalence of Alzheimer's disease point to the need for understanding why certain individuals spend an extended period of their lives with poor cognitive health.

Programs that were adapted to the needs of older participants were perceived as supports to implementation whereas participants' needs and resources (e.g., lack of resources, lower health literacy) were occasionally found to limit effective implementation of programming.

    As the older adult population continues to access CDS sites to address their health and nutritional needs, purposeful efforts are needed to examine the specific approaches that can support nutrition education program implementation. Future research is needed to assess strategies that are effective for mitigating barriers to implementing nutrition education programming in the CDS setting.

    This cohort study identified 204 hospitals acquired by private equity firms from 2005 to 2017 and 532 matched hospitals not acquired by private equity. Using a difference-in-differences design, this study evaluated changes in net income, charges, charge to cost ratios, case mix index (a measure of reported illness burden), share of discharges for patients with Medicare or Medicaid coverage, discharges per year, and aggregate hospital quality measures associated with private equity acquisition through 3 years after acquisition, adjusted for case mix, hospital beds, calendar year, and adjustment for multiple hypothesis testing. In subgroup analyses, changes in outcomes for private equity-owned Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) hospitals and non-HCA hospitals relative to matched controls were assessed.

As a result, there is no fundamental debate about the goal and concept of medical education. The issue of the assumption of medical activities by non-physician professions is at least discussed, but hardly any of it is implemented. It is closely linked to the question of how many physicians are needed in Switzerland. The following considerations, which some may find provocative, will hopefully trigger a fundamental discussion. At the same time, developments in bioinformatics, molecular biosciences and imaging techniques are revolutionizing medicine. In order to fully exploit the new possibilities, for example in medical technology or personalised medicine, doctors with a sound knowledge in several disciplines will be needed in the future. In-depth knowledge in the medical, technical and biological sciences will become indispensable. This is where the new Bachelor of Human Medicine at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich has been in place since autumn 2017, combining medical with technical and scientific aspects of human health. In addition to traditional medical content, it also covers topics from the bioinformatics and medical technology sectors. The continuation of the studies takes place at one of the partner universities in Basel, Lugano or Zurich.Aim This discrete choice experiment aimed to assess patients' preferences for treatment attributes in multiple sclerosis (MS). Patients & methods Patients with relapsing-remitting MS completed an online survey assessing treatment preferences. Descriptive statistical analysis and discrete choice hierarchical Bayesian modeling were performed. Results Across the overall sample (n = 485), dosing regimen, efficacy and safety were equally important. Within the whole sample, and among those diagnosed less then 10 years ago, intravenous infusion ≤3 times/year was the preferred dosing regimen; among patients diagnosed ≥10 years ago it was preferred equally to oral treatments. Patients were more willing to accept frequent but mild over rare but severe side effects. Conclusion Several factors influence patient preferences for MS treatments and must be considered in patient-centered care.This study examines the knowledge gap hypothesis in the United States and Singapore in the context of nanotechnology. This study proposes that academic discipline serves as a better indicator than education levels in predicting nanotechnology knowledge gaps. To reflect the contemporary media landscape, this study examines how attention to online media and documentaries alongside traditional news outlets affect individuals' nanotechnology knowledge. In both countries, online media and documentaries, as well as traditional news outlets, were related to nanotechnology knowledge to various extents. While the knowledge gap hypothesis was not observed in Singapore, results revealed that increased media attention and interpersonal discussion widened knowledge gaps between individuals from science and non-science disciplines in the United States. Education levels failed to reveal a consistent moderation effect. Taken together, the interaction analyses revealed that academic discipline predicted nanotechnology knowledge gaps more consistently than education levels in the United States.

  • This study investigated the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), NH4-N, and perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in the effluent from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) using ZnO coated activated carbon (ZnO/AC). Results suggested that the optimal dosage of the ZnO/AC was 0.8 g/L within 240 min of contact time, at which the maximum removal efficiency of COD was approximately 86.8%, while the removal efficiencies of PFOA and PFOS reached 86.5% and 82.1%. In comparison, the removal efficiencies of NH4-N, PFBA, and PFBS were lower, at approximately 47.9%, 44.0%, and 55.4%, respectively. In addition, COD was preferentially adsorbed before PFCs and NH4-N, when the contact time ranged from 0 to 180 min, and the order of PFCs removal showed a positive correlation with C-F chain length. The kinetic study revealed that the removal of COD, NH4-N, and PFCs could be better depicted and predicted by the Lagergren quasi-second order dynamic model with high correlation coefficients, which involved liquid membrane diffusion, intraparticle diffusion, and photocatalytic reactions. The saturated ZnO/AC was finally regenerated using ultrasound for 3 h and retained excellent performance, which proved it could be considered as an effective and alternative technology.Palladium (Pd) is widely used in vehicle exhaust catalysts (VECs) to reduce toxic emissions from motor vehicles. The study aimed to quantitatively determine Pd content and water quality parameters, to analyze the variation differences and to explore the effect of water quality parameters on Pd content in the urban water environment system (wet deposition-rainfall runoff-receiving water body-estuary) of the city of Haikou, Hainan Island, China. The method used in this study included microwave digestion under high pressure and temperature, analysis by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, quality control of the experimental procedure and guaranteed recovery (85% -125%). The results showed that the dissolved Pd average content in the urban water environment system was the highest in rainfall runoff (4.93 ng/L), followed by that in the receiving water body (4.56 ng/L), and it was the lowest in wet deposition (0.1 ng/L). The suspended Pd average content was the highest in the estuary (2.83 ng/L), followed d nor suspended Pd content (correlation coefficient = 0.14, 0.13), which may be due to the synergistic effect of the multiple physical factors on Pd. This study was helpful to better understand the environmental behavior of Pd and provided important theoretical support for the prevention and protection against urban water environmental pollution.Municipal sludge disposal and recycle has become a prominent research theme. In this study, a sequential process for integral treatment of municipal sludge was primarily presented, combining acid leaching, anion exchange and aerobic composting. The aim of the process was to remove chromium (Cr) from the sludge and reuse the sludge as manure. Firstly, Cr was removed from municipal sludge via the acid leaching process; the removal rate was up to 57.43%. Then, ion exchange resin was used to remove Cr from leachate; the removal rate reached 95%. Aluminum sheet was used to replace the Cr from eluent; the replacement rate was 63.3%. The aerobic composting process could be successfully warmed up to above 55 °C and lasted for 4 days; the seed germination index reached 68.3%. After the composting process, the residual Cr in sludge mainly existed at a more stable residual state and organic binding state. Overall, this novel sequential process serves as a potential high-efficiency, green, low-energy way for municipal sludge recycle.By providing the key carbon and nitrogen elements needed for eutrophication, the potential toxicity of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) prompts the exploration of effective treatment methods to minimize the amount of EDTA released into the environment. The integration of BN models, statistical measures of agreement (Cohen's Kappa coefficient) and a statistical test (Wilcoxon test) were useful for a robust and straightforward selection of a minimum number of variables (qualitative and quantitative) that ensure a suitable prediction level of the structural conditions of sewer pipes. According to the application of the methodology to a specific case study (Bogotás sewer network, Colombia), it found that with only two variables (age and diameter) the model could achieve the same capacity of prediction (Cohen's Kappa coefficient = 0.43) as a model considering several variables. Furthermore, the methodology allows finding the calibration and validation percentage subsets that best fit (80% for calibration and 20% for validation data in the case study) in the model to increase the capacity of prediction with low variations.

Patients from 10 hospitals were divided into experimental group(304 cases) and control group(302 cases). The baseline values of age, sex ratio, cll group had economic advantages over the experimental group, with the economic probability of 53%. Sensitivity analysis supported the robustness of the results. The results of incremental cost-effect analysis based on the total recovery rate of symptoms and signs showed that compared with the experimental group, the control group had lower cost, better effect and absolute economic advantage, with a corresponding probability of 55%. Previous research has shown that PB induces cell cycle arrest at late S or G2/M phase and causes apoptosis at higher doses (Wu et al., 2014; Guha Majumdar and Subramanian, 2019). A combination of PB leaf extract has also been shown to enhance the cytotoxicity of the anticancer drug, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), in cancer cells (Ng et al., 2014).Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is one of the most common malignancies, especially in young people. Combination chemotherapy for ALL typically includes corticosteroids (Kantarjian et al., 2000). Hyperglycemia is a well-recognized complication of corticosteroids, and chemotherapy-induced diabetes (CID) is not uncommon (27.5%-37.0%) during the treatment of ALL (Hsu et al., 2002; Weiser et al., 2004; Alves et al., 2007). Besides the effect of corticosteroids, potential factors triggering hyperglycemia in ALL also include direct infiltration of the pancreas by leukemia cells and β cell dysfunction induced by chemotherapeutic agents such as L-asparagine (Mohn et al., 2004).

  • To analyze the frequency of sadness, nervousness, and sleep disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, identifying the most affected demographic segments.

    This was a cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire answered by adults and elderly people to collect information on living conditions, health and health-related behaviors. Prevalence rates and prevalence ratios adjusted for age and sex were estimated.

    The data on 45,161 Brazilian respondents showed that during the pandemic 40.4% (95%CI 39.0;41.8) frequently felt sad or depressed and 52.6% (95%CI 51.2;54.1) frequently felt anxious or nervous; 43.5% (95%CI 41.8;45.3) reported the onset of sleep problems and 48.0% (95%CI 45.6;50.5) had a prior sleep problem that had become worse. Frequent sadness and nervousness, as well as change in sleep patterns were higher in young adults, women and those with a history of depression.

EGFR and VEGF expression were high in primary tumor (median TIS 8) and LN metastases (median TIS 6 and 8, respectively). No EGFR expression was seen in LNs without metastases. Cryopreserved semen samples from patients (testicular cancer, n = 40; Hodgkin's disease, n = 32; lymphoma, n = 20; leukemia, n = 17) before starting therapy were used for proteomic analysis, while samples from fertile donors (n = 19) were included as controls. The proteomic profiling of sperm was carried out by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and differentially expressed proteins involved in the reproductive processes were validated by Western blotting. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that proteins associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative phosphorylation, and Sirtuin signaling pathways were dysregulated in cancer patients, while oxidative phosphorylation and tricarboxylic acid cycle were predicted to be deactivated.
