Measurement of pregnancy intention in low- and middle-income countries relies heavily on surveys, notably Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), yet few studies have evaluated survey questions. Are other forms of creatine similar or superior to monohydrate and is creatine stable in solutions/beverages? To answer these questions, an internationally renowned team of research experts was formed to perform an evidence-based scientific evaluation of the literature regarding creatine supplementation.
    Violaceins have attracted **** attention as potential targets used in medicines, food additives, insecticides, cosmetics and textiles, but low productivity was the key factor to limit their large-scale applications. This work put forward a direct RBS engineering strategy to engineer the violacein biosynthetic gene cluster cloned from Chromobacterium violaceum ATCC 12,472 to efficiently improve the fermentation titers.

    Through four-rounds of engineering of the native RBSs within the violaceins biosynthetic operon vioABCDE, this work apparently broke through the rate-limiting steps of intermediates conversion, resulting in 2.41-fold improvement of violaceins production compared to the titers of the starting strain Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) (Vio12472). Furthermore, by optimizing the batch-fermentation parameters including temperature, concentration of IPTG inducer and fermentation time, the maximum yield of violaceins from (BCDE)m (tnaA
    ) reached 3269.7µM at 2mM tryptophan in the medium. Interestingly, ratiosynthesis of natural products, having the potential for a greater improvement of the product yields within tryptophan hyperproducers and simultaneously avoiding the costly low temperature cultivation for large-scale industrial production of violaciens. This direct RBS engineering strategy could also be easily and helpfully used in engineering the native RBSs of other larger and value-added natural product biosynthetic gene clusters by widely used site-specific mutagenesis methods represented by inverse PCR or CRISPR-Cas9 techniques to increase their fermentation titers in the future.
    Increasing evidence has shown that cytolytic activity (CYT) is a new immunotherapy biomarker that characterises the antitumour immune activity of cytotoxic T cells and macrophages. In this study, we established a prognostic model associated with CYT.

    A prognostic model based on CYT-related genes was developed. Furthermore, aberrant expression of genes of the model in colon cancer (CC) was identified by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays. Next, the correlation between the model and T-cell infiltration in the CC microenvironment was analysed. The Tumour Immune Dysfunction and Exclusion (TIDE) algorithm and subclass mapping were used to predict clinical responses to immune checkpoint inhibitors.

    In total, 280 of the 1418 genes were differentially expressed based on CYT. A prognostic model (including HOXC8 and MS4A2) was developed based on CYT-related genes. The model was validated using the testing set, the whole set and a Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) cohort (GSE41258). Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) and other analyses showed that the levels of immune infiltration and antitumour immune activation in low-risk-score tumours were greater than those in high-risk-score tumours. CC patients with a low-risk-score showed more promise in the response to anti-immunecheckpointtherapy.

    Overall, our model may precisely predict the overall survival of CC and reflect the strength of antitumour immune activity in the CC microenvironment. Furthermore, the model may be a predictive factor for the response to immunotherapy.

    In parallel with the change of malaria policy from control to elimination and declines in the malaria burden in Greater Mekong Sub-region, the motivation and social role of malaria volunteers has declined. To address this public health problem, in Myanmar, the role and responsibilities of malaria volunteers have been transformed into integrated community malaria volunteers (ICMV), that includes the integration of activities for five additional diseases (dengue, lymphatic filariasis, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and leprosy) into their current activities. However, this transformation was not evidence-based and did not consider inputs of different stakeholders. Therefore, qualitative stakeholder consultations were performed to optimize future malaria volunteer models in Myanmar.

    Semi-structured interviews were conducted with key health stakeholders from the Myanmar Ministry of Health and Sports (MoHS) and malaria implementing partners to obtain their perspectives on community-delivered malaria models. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to explore the experiences of the stakeholders in policymaking and programme implementation.

  • General anesthesia is a powerful and indispensable tool to ensure the accomplishment of surgical procedures or clinical examinations. Sevoflurane as an inhalational anesthetic without unpleasant odor is commonly used in clinical practice, especially for pediatric surgery. However, the toxicity caused by sevoflurane has gained growing attention. Mitochondria play a key role in maintaining cellular metabolism and survival. To maintain the stability of mitochondrial homeostasis, they are constantly going through fusion and fission. Also, damaged mitochondria need to be degraded by autophagy, termed as mitophagy. Accumulating evidence proves that sevoflurane exposure in young age could lead to cell toxicity by triggering the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis, inducing the abnormalities of mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy. In the present review, we focus on the current understanding of mitochondrial apoptosis, dynamics and mitophagy in cell function, the implications for cell toxicity in response to sevoflurane, and their underlying potential mechanisms.Vascular calcification (VC) describes the pathophysiological phenotype of calcium apatite deposition within the vascular wall, leading to vascular stiffening and the loss of compliance. VC is never benign; the presence and severity of VC correlate closely with the risk of myocardial events and cardiovascular mortality in multiple at-risk populations such as patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Mitochondrial dysfunction involving each of vascular wall constituents (endothelia and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs)) aggravates various vascular pathologies, including atherosclerosis and VC. However, few studies address the pathogenic role of mitochondrial dysfunction during the course of VC, and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) seem to lie in the pathophysiologic epicenter. Superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2), through its preferential localization to the mitochondria, stands at the forefront against mitochondrial ROS in VSMCs and thus potentially modifies the probability of VC initiation or progression. In this review, we will provide a literature-based summary regarding the relationship between SOD2 and VC in the context of VSMCs. Apart from the conventional wisdom of attenuating mitochondrial ROS, SOD2 has been found to affect mitophagy and the formation of the autophagosome, suppress JAK/STAT as well as PI3K/Akt signaling, and retard vascular senescence, all of which underlie the beneficial influences on VC exerted by SOD2. More importantly, we outline the therapeutic potential of a novel SOD2-targeted strategy for the treatment of VC, including an ever-expanding list of pharmaceuticals and natural compounds. It is expected that VSMC SOD2 will become an important druggable target for treating VC in the future.Acute lung injury (ALI) is a serious respiratory syndrome characterized with uncontrolled inflammatory response. Oxyberberine has strong potential for clinical usage since it showed strong anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antiarrhythmic effects in various diseases. In the present study, we evaluated whether oxyberberine can inhibit lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) induced ALI in vivo and further evaluated the possible involvement of mitophagy in vitro by using A549 cells, a human lung epithelial cell line. Our in vivo study shows that oxyberberine significantly inhibited LPS-induced lung pathological injury and lung edema, as indicated by the changes in lung wet/dry ratio and total protein levels in the BALF in ****. Moreover, oxyberberine inhibited inflammation, as indicated by the changes of neutrophil accumulation and production of proinflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin 1β (IL-1β), and IL-6 in both the lung and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in ALI ****. Our in vitro study shows that LPS significantly decreased the protein level of mitochondrial proteins, including cytochrome c oxidase subunit IV (COX IV), p62, and mitofusin-2 (Mfn2) in A549 cells. Furthermore, the protective effect of Pue on HUVECs was closely related to the SIRT-1 signaling pathway. In our recent work, we aimed to clarify the mitochondrial protective effects of BGP-15 in a hypertension-induced heart failure model and "in vitro." Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) received BGP-15 or placebo for 18 weeks. BGP-15 treatment preserved the normal mitochondrial ultrastructure and enhanced the mitochondrial fusion. Neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCMs) were stressed by hydrogen-peroxide. BGP-15 treatment inhibited the mitochondrial fission processes, promoted mitochondrial fusion, maintained the integrity of the mitochondrial genome, and moreover enhanced the de novo biogenesis of the mitochondria.

All compounds were analyzed by spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR, 1H-NMR, MS, and UV-vis), and the absorbance characteristics of silicon phthalocyanines were evaluated with the expected strong typical absorption bands in the far-red spectrum. The cytotoxic effects of these phthalocyanines induced by photodynamic therapy (PDT) were determined in a dose-dependent manner. Following cytotoxicity analysis, flow cytometric research of cell death was performed. The formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was determined by confocal microscopy. High levels of cytotoxicity and decreased viable cell population have been detected in cancer cells after treatment.   • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are two devastating and intertwined neurodegenerative diseases. Historically, ALS and FTD were considered distinct disorders given differences in presenting clinical symptoms, disease duration, and predicted risk of developing each disease. However, research over recent years has highlighted the considerable clinical, pathological, and genetic overlap of ALS and FTD, and these two syndromes are now thought to represent different manifestations of the same neuropathological disease spectrum. In this review, we discuss the need to shift our focus from studying ALS and FTD in isolation to identifying the biological mechanisms that drive these diseases-both common and distinct-to improve treatment discovery and therapeutic development success. We also emphasize the importance of genomic data to facilitate a "precision medicine" approach for treating ALS and FTD.
    Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are commonly classified into subtypes based on motor symptoms. The aims of the present study were to determine the consistency between PD motor subtypes, to assess the stability of PD motor subtypes over time, and to explore the variables influencing PD motor subtype stability.

In 12 healthy adults, the center of a standardized grid was fixed above the hot spot of the target muscle of the left primary motor cortex. Twelve additional positions were arranged in a quadratic grid with positions between 5 and 10 mm from the hot spot. At each of the 13 positions, TMS single pulses were applied. The topographical maximum of the resulting N100 was located ipsilateral and slightly posterior to the stimulation site. A source analysis revealed an equivalent dipole localized more deeply than standard motor cortex coordinates that could not be explained by a single seeded primary motor cortex dipole. The N100 topography might not only reflect primary motor cortex activation, but also sum activation of the surrounding cortex. N100 amplitude and latency decreased significantly during stimulation anterior-medial to the hot spot although MEP amplitudes were smaller at all other stimulation sites. Therefore, N100 amplitudes might be suitable for detecting differences in local cortical excitability. The N100 topography, with its maximum located posterior to the stimulation site, possibly depends on both anatomical characteristics of the stimulated cortex and differences in local excitability of surrounding cortical areas. The less excitable anterior cortex might contribute to a more posterior maximum. There was no correlation between N100 and MEP amplitudes, but a single-trial analysis revealed a trend toward larger N100 amplitudes in trials with larger MEPs. Thus, functionally efficient cortical excitation might increase the probability of higher N100 amplitudes, but TEPs are also generated in the absence of MEPs.

COVID-19 cases were identified using International Classification of Diseases 10 codes.ResultsWe analysed a cohort of 6,746 patients (80% female) with active prescriptions for hydroxychloroquine/chloroquine, and 13,492 controls. During follow-up, there were 97 (1.4%) COVID-19 cases in the exposed cohort and 183 (1.4%) among controls. The incidence rate was very similar between the two groups (12.05 vs 11.35 cases/100,000 person-days). The exposed cohort was not at lower risk of infection compared with controls (hazard ratio (HR) 1.08; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.83-1.44; p = 0.50). Forty cases (0.6%) were admitted to hospital in the exposed cohort and 50 (0.4%) in the control cohort, suggesting a higher hospitalisation rate in the former, though differences were not confirmed after adjustment (HR 1·46; 95% CI 0.91-2.34; p = 0.10).ConclusionsPatients chronically exposed to chloroquine/hydroxychloroquine did not differ in risk of COVID-19 nor hospitalisation, compared with controls. Unique sequences, dyads and sequence-based clusters (SBCs) were identified. We linked non-sequenced cases by epidemiological information and retrospectively assessed the value of typing for outbreak identification.ResultsFifty-five percent (n = 542/990) of the notified hepatitis A cases were referred to the Public Health Agency of Sweden for typing and 447 (45%) were sequenced successfully. Subgenotypes included IA (42.5%, n = 190), IB (42.7%, n = 191) and IIIA (14.8%, n = 66). Phylogenetic analysis identified 154 unique sequences, 33 dyads (66 cases) and 34 SBCs (227 cases). The combination of molecular and epidemiological data revealed 23 potential outbreaks comprising 201 cases. Cases were linked by sequence (59%, n = 118), epidemiological data (11%, n = 23) or both (30%, n = 60). During follow-up, there were 97 (1.4%) COVID-19 cases in the exposed cohort and 183 (1.4%) among controls. The incidence rate was very similar between the two groups (12.05 vs 11.35 cases/100,000 person-days). The exposed cohort was not at lower risk of infection compared with controls (hazard ratio (HR) 1.08; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.83-1.44; p = 0.50). Forty cases (0.6%) were admitted to hospital in the exposed cohort and 50 (0.4%) in the control cohort, suggesting a higher hospitalisation rate in the former, though differences were not confirmed after adjustment (HR 1·46; 95% CI 0.91-2.34; p = 0.10).ConclusionsPatients chronically exposed to chloroquine/hydroxychloroquine did not differ in risk of COVID-19 nor hospitalisation, compared with controls. We performed a phylogenetic analysis of evolutionary distances to identify cases with similar virus sequences (≥ 459/460 identical nt in the VP1/P2A junction). Unique sequences, dyads and sequence-based clusters (SBCs) were identified. We linked non-sequenced cases by epidemiological information and retrospectively assessed the value of typing for outbreak identification.ResultsFifty-five percent (n = 542/990) of the notified hepatitis A cases were referred to the Public Health Agency of Sweden for typing and 447 (45%) were sequenced successfully. Subgenotypes included IA (42.5%, n = 190), IB (42.7%, n = 191) and IIIA (14.8%, n = 66). Phylogenetic analysis identified 154 unique sequences, 33 dyads (66 cases) and 34 SBCs (227 cases). The combination of molecular and epidemiological data revealed 23 potential outbreaks comprising 201 cases. Cases were linked by sequence (59%, n = 118), epidemiological data (11%, n = 23) or both (30%, n = 60).     Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) may play a role in cardiometabolic disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate which biochemical and clinical parameters are independently associated with serum PEDF levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

    We performed a cross-sectional analysis of 124 patients with T2DM who underwent continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and blood chemistry analysis, including the diacron-reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) test and serum PEDF measurement (study 1). Then we investigated whether the changes in the studied biochemical and clinical parameters after 24 weeks of treatment (Δparameters) with anti-hyperglycemic agents, including sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors, glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists, and/or insulin and anti-hypertensive drugs and statins, were independently correlated with change in PEDF (ΔPEDF) in 52 of the patients with T2DM for whom there was sufficient serum samples to perform the post-treatment analysis (study 2)m PEDF level in patients with T2DM.In this study, we aimed to reveal whether the medial longitudinal arch is formed in the intrauterine period and the structural features of the medial longitudinal arch. The study was conducted on 146 feet of 73 fetuses (38 male, 35 female) aged between 15 and 40 weeks of gestation. The fetuses were grouped by trimesters. The footprints taken were photographed with a millimeter ruler, and the development of the medial longitudinal arch was examined on footprints based on the Clarke index, Chipaux-Smirak index, and Staheli index. In Clarke index and Staheli index, it was observed that the arch height was normalized in the transition from the second trimester to the third trimester, the arch decreased in the transition to full-term, and the rate of pes planus increased. All indices detected pes planus by 81.81% in the full-term period. The rate of pes planus determined according to Clarke index and Staheli index, especially in the third trimester period, was 6.94% and 11.11%, respectively. We have provided a perspective on how the development of the medial longitudinal arch is shaped in the intrauterine period. Based on the results of study, we consider that the data on the medial longitudinal arch, especially in the third trimester period, may be more significant. For this purpose, 200 fish of 55 g mean weight were separated into 3 cylindroconical fiberglass tanks of 500-L capacity, each with a stocking density of 4 kg m-3. The fish were regularly hand-fed 0% (control group), 2%, and 6% garlic-supplemented diets to apparent satiation twice a day for 1 month. At the end of the experiment, we injected 22.2 mM cadmium (CdCl2) intraperitoneally to the experimental groups and a placebo solution (9% NaCl) to the control groups; liver, kidney, heart, and blood tissue alterations were monitored with a full screening of their plasmatic indicators, 24 h before and 48 h after Cd injection. Subsequently, whole blood count and blood smears were performed to follow up on Cd-induced vascular damages. Our data showed that Cd induced thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, leading to widespread bleeding and cellular alterations in the targeted tissues. These alterations were associated with an obvious normochromic normocytic anemia in favor of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia. Cd injection has also seriously inhibited the overall enzymatic activities triggering a metabolic shift. Our results demonstrated the feasibility of using this noninvasive molecular diagnostic test to detect H. pylori in saliva samples.The pathological impact of haze upon the phyllosphere microbiota awaits investigation. A moderate degree of haze environment and a clean control were selected in Chengdu, China. Artemisia argyi, a ubiquitously distributed and extensively applied Chinese herb, was also chosen for experiment. Total genome DNA was extracted from leaf samples, and for metagenome sequencing, an Illumina HiSeq 2500 platform was applied. The results showed that the gene numbers of phyllosphere microbiota derived from haze leaves were lower than those of the clean control. The phyllosphere microbiota derived from both haze and clean groups shared the same top ten phyla; the abundances of Proteobacteria, Actinomycetes and Anorthococcuso of the haze group were substantially increased, while Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes decreased. At the genus level, the abundances of Nocardia, Paracoccus, Marmoricola and Knoelia from haze leaves were markedly increased, while the yeasts were statistically decreased.   • The current study provides national cancer statistics and their secular trends in Korea, including incidence, mortality, survival, and prevalence in 2018.

    Incidence, survival, and prevalence rates of cancer were calculated using the Korea National Cancer Incidence Database, from 1999 to 2018, with survival follow-up until December 31, 2019. Deaths from cancer were assessed using causes-of-death data obtained from Statistics Korea. Crude and age-standardized rates (ASRs) for incidence, mortality, prevalence, and 5-year relative survival rates were calculated, and temporal trends for incidence and mortality rates were evaluated, with annual percentage changes.

    In 2018, newly diagnosed cancer cases and deaths from cancer were reported as 243,837 (ASR, 270.4 per 100,000) and 79,153 (ASR, 73.3 per 100,000), respectively. The overall cancer incidence rates increased by 3.3% annually from 1999 to 2012, and decreased by 5.4% annually from 2012 to 2015, thereafter, followed by nonsignificant changes. Cancer mortality rates have been decreasing since 2002, with more rapid decline in recent years (annual decrease of 2.7% from 2007 to 2014; 3.7% from 2014 to 2018). The 5-year relative survival between 2014 and 2018 was 70.3%, which contributed to prevalent cases reaching over 2 million by the end of 2018.

    In total, 259,999 new cancer cases and 81,567 cancer deaths are expected to occur in Korea in 2021. The most common cancer site is expected to be the lung, followed by the thyroid, colon and rectum, breast, and stomach. These five cancers are expected to represent half of the overall burden of cancer in Korea. The most common type of cancer leading to death is expected to be lung cancer, followed by liver, colorectal, pancreatic, and stomach cancers.

    We identified eleven prospective studies eight studies on 696 colorectal cancer patients who received chemotherapy and three studies on 346 rectal cancer patients who received neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) of neuropsychological test results and the cognitive quality-of-life scale were calculated using random effect models. A meta-regression was conducted to investigate the association between mean study population age and effect sizes.

    The association between chemotherapy and cognitive impairment was not clear in colorectal cancer patients (SMD, 0.003; 95% confidence interval, ‒0.080 to 0.086). However, a meta-regression showed that older patients are more vulnerable to CRCI than younger patients (β=‒0.016, p < 0.001).

    This study investigated medical educators' readiness for online teaching by exploring their perceived ability and importance of online teaching competencies and identified the highest priority of their educational needs.

    In this study, 144 medical education faculty members from a university were invited to participate. The faculty online teaching readiness scale was virtually distributed at the end of the spring semester of 2020 and 38 faculty members responded for 2 weeks. The collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, Borich Needs Assessment, and the Locus for Focus model.

    The overall average perceived ability was 2.76, while the overall average perceived importance was 3.36. The course design and the technical competency categories showed the highest and lowest educational needs, respectively. Five competencies were given the highest priority of educational needs.

  • In this study, a series of chitosan derivatives bearing active halogenated aromatic imines were successfully synthesized via Schiff bases with the high degrees of substitution. Detailed structural characterization was carried out using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Besides, the antifungal activity against three common plant pathogenic fungi, including Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum, and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum, was investigated using in vitro hyphal measurements. The results showed that double Schiff bases of chitosan derivatives exhibited enhanced antifungal activity compared with chitosan, especially at 1.0 mg/mL. The double Schiff bases of chitosan bearing halogeno-benzenes showed >95% inhibitory indices at 1.0 mg/mL against Botrytis cinereal since halogens had the stronger electron-withdrawing property. The higher degree of substitution was another positive effect to improve the antifungal activity. This study provides a practical strategy to synthesize new double Schiff bases of chitosan derivatives bearing halogeno-benzenes, which could be developed into stronger antifungal agents.In order to understand the effects of emulsion particle sizes on the properties of novel konjac glucomannan (KGM)-based emulsion films, four types of Pickering emulsions with different oil phase (10%, 30%, 50% and 70%, v/v) were prepared by the same stabilizers (2% BCNs/SPI colloidal particles dispersions) and added into the film-forming solutions to keep the same final oil content (0.2%, w/v) in all KGM-based emulsion films. Moreover, the contact angle values of KGM-based emulsion films slightly increased with the increase of the emulsion particle sizes, while the thermal stability of KGM-based films was not significantly affected by the particle sizes. Furthermore, the KGM-based emulsion films formed mainly through the hydrogen bond interactions as analyzed by FTIR. In addition, with the increase of the emulsion particle sizes, physical and mechanical properties of KGM-based emulsion films were significantly affected. Overall, the fabricated KGM/GG-DMY composite films have a promising application in the fields of food packaging.To reveal the structural characteristics and physicochemical properties of perennial ryegrass lignin, sequential alkali extractions or double ball-milling and enzymatic hydrolysis on the basis of ultrasonic and hydrothermal pretreatments were proposed in this study. Results revealed that sequential alkali extractions released 89.4% of original lignin from the ryegrass cell walls and 0.75-4.16% of associated carbohydrates as compared to the double ball-milling and enzymatic hydrolysis (96.0% and 18.39%). It was observed that the two types of lignin prepared were SGH-type and had different amounts of p-coumarates and ferulates, and primarily consisted of β-O-4' linkages combined with minor amounts of β-β' and β-5' linkages. Besides, alkali-soluble lignins exhibited relatively fewer β-O-4' linkages, higher S/G ratios and H-type units, and abundant phenolic OH groups as compared to the double enzymatic lignin. Overall, the deeper investigation of the lignin structure of ryegrass will provide useful information for the efficient utilization of lignin macromolecules in biorefineries.Friendships constitute important relationships, and often function to reduce stress, but have been under-studied. In mother-child dyads, infants coordinate their stress response with their caregivers without experiencing the stressor themselves. The current study used a modified version of the Trier Social Stress Test to examine whether i) friends are physiologically attuned (i.e., cortisol and progesterone); ii) attunement differs as a function of social acceptance or rejection external to the dyad; and, iii) friends can 'catch' a stress response only through non-verbal cues. Friends showed both cortisol and progesterone attunement at the beginning of the study. Friends showed cortisol attunement across time and conditions. Friends' progesterone levels were significantly, but negatively associated across time and conditions. They did not, however, show a stress contagion as a result of one friend experiencing stress. Overall, the fabricated KGM/GG-DMY composite films have a promising application in the fields of food packaging.To reveal the structural characteristics and physicochemical properties of perennial ryegrass lignin, sequential alkali extractions or double ball-milling and enzymatic hydrolysis on the basis of ultrasonic and hydrothermal pretreatments were proposed in this study. Results revealed that sequential alkali extractions released 89.4% of original lignin from the ryegrass cell walls and 0.75-4.16% of associated carbohydrates as compared to the double ball-milling and enzymatic hydrolysis (96.0% and 18.39%). It was observed that the two types of lignin prepared were SGH-type and had different amounts of p-coumarates and ferulates, and primarily consisted of β-O-4' linkages combined with minor amounts of β-β' and β-5' linkages. Besides, alkali-soluble lignins exhibited relatively fewer β-O-4' linkages, higher S/G ratios and H-type units, and abundant phenolic OH groups as compared to the double enzymatic lignin. Overall, the deeper investigation of the lignin structure of ryegrass will provide useful information for the efficient utilization of lignin macromolecules in biorefineries.Friendships constitute important relationships, and often function to reduce stress, but have been under-studied. In mother-child dyads, infants coordinate their stress response with their caregivers without experiencing the stressor themselves. The current study used a modified version of the Trier Social Stress Test to examine whether i) friends are physiologically attuned (i.e., cortisol and progesterone); ii) attunement differs as a function of social acceptance or rejection external to the dyad; and, iii) friends can 'catch' a stress response only through non-verbal cues. Friends showed both cortisol and progesterone attunement at the beginning of the study. Friends showed cortisol attunement across time and conditions. Friends' progesterone levels were significantly, but negatively associated across time and conditions. They did not, however, show a stress contagion as a result of one friend experiencing stress. These findings suggest that cortisol and progesterone play different roles in the attunement of stress and subsequent affiliation.Economic decisions are characterized by their uncertainty and the lack of explicit feedback that indicates the correctness of decisions at the time they are made.
