Season significantly modified the effect of CO on pneumonia, the effect of SO2 on cardiovascular disease, the effect of PM10 on stroke, and the effect of O3 on stroke, asthma and pneumonia. The effect modifications of air pollution by season were similar among males and females, while the effect estimates seem to be higher among children under 18 years old and the elderly aged 75 or over. Further research is needed to better understand the mechanisms underlying the seasonal variance of the effect of air pollutants on morbidity. Diurnal changes of H2O2 in river water during mid-summer were investigated. H2O2 in river water increased with the increase in intensity of solar radiation in the morning, and reached a maximum at 1400, although solar radiation reached a maximum around 1200. In the afternoon, a gradual decrease in H2O2 was observed, and H2O2 reached a minimum just before sunrise. Degradation rate constants determined using unfiltered river water samples were 0.081-0.161 h-1, corresponding to a half-life of 4.3-8.5 h. We simulated diurnal changes in H2O2 using a simple formation, accumulation, and degradation model for static water using formation and degradation rate constants. The results of the modeling suggested that in situ degradation rate constants in rivers could be faster than those determined for unfiltered river water samples. Experiments using river sand indicated that riverbed sand could play an important role in H2O2 decay in rivers. We discussed the decomposition process of H2O2 in rivers. The deposition and resuspension of sediments are issues of considerable concern in combined sewer systems management. Sediments can produce the loss of hydraulic capacity and odour generation in sewers, and are also considered the main source of pollution due to their occasional uncontrolled discharges into the environment via Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO). Sewer sediments contain granular and cohesive organic fractions that can have a significant influence on bed resistance. In order to address the relationship between sewer sediment composition and its erodibility, accumulation and erosion experiments were performed in a flume test facility fed with wastewater. The flume was placed in a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), in which different circular pipe geometries were set. Wastewater flow inlet conditions and bed structures were monitored during the experiments. The photogrammetric technique Structure from Motion (SfM) was applied to record the bed deposit structures, providing accurate measurements of the accumulation rates. The SfM was also used to assess sediment transport and the characteristics of the bed forms after the erosion tests. In addition, velocity distributions and shear stress profiles were measured during the erosion tests to characterize flow resistance and sediment erosion. During both accumulation and erosion tests, sediments were sampled in order to analyse their physicochemical properties, thus highlighting the study of the biodegradability of the organic matter. Different deposition periods showed biological transformations in the bed deposit structure, which were seen to affect its cohesion, and in consequence, its erosion threshold. Tests with significant erosion rates agreed in broad terms with dimensionless sediment transport models derived from previous experimental studies performed with partly cohesive and organic materials in sewer pipes. Gas-phase fluorene is one of the most abundant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that can be oxidized by activated radicals. In this study, we used quantum chemical calculation to study the atmospheric degradation of fluorene initiated by Cl and NO3 radicals. The results showed that the Cl radical initiated reaction of fluorene mainly produces 9-fluorene radical that has significant potential to form secondary pollutants with more persistent toxic properties. The NO3 radical initiated reaction of fluorene leads to the formation of oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) and nitrated PAHs (NPAHs) including nitrooxyfluorene, nitrooxyfluorenone and 1,4-fluorenequinone. Conservation practices intended to reduce nitrate-N (NO3--N) export from watersheds are being implemented by many regions without necessary tools to assess effectiveness of these abatement tools. A commonly used herbicide metolachlor degrades in the vadose zone of croplands to form two metabolites (metolachlor ethane sulfonic acid (MESA) and metolachlor oxanilic acid (MOXA)) which are both highly soluble in soils. Study of metabolite fates in a first order watershed provided evidence that transport of these metabolites to stream water is highly correlated to transport of agricultural NO3--N that also forms in the cropland vadose zone. Linear models describing the relationships of stream flux of MESA and MOXA to NO3--N flux generated goodness of fit values of 0.93 and 0.81 respectively. These findings support a conclusion that both MESA and MOXA act as excellent transport analogs of NO3--N and become strongly correlated to agricultural NO3--N leaching from the cropland vadose zone. Moreover, their use as conservative tracers in agricultural watersheds can provide valuable information concerning movement and fate of agricultural nitrogen at watershed scales of observation.

Picky eating was associated with restriction (P = .01) and demandingness (P less then .001) trajectory memberships, such that low picky eating was associated with low restriction and high picky eating was associated with high demandingness. Methods We report a large, observational, multicenter cohort of children with AIS, age 1 month to 18 years, enrolled in the International Pediatric Stroke Study from 2003 to 2014. Clinical and demographic differences were compared by use of the Fisher exact test, with linear step-up permutation min-p adjustment for multiple comparisons. Exploratory analyses were conducted to evaluate differences between cases of AIS with and without arteriopathy and between arteriopathy subtypes. Results Of 2,127 children with AIS, 725 (34%) had arteriopathy (median age 7.45 years). Arteriopathy subtypes included dissection (27%), moyamoya (24.5%), focal cerebral arteriopathy-inflammatory subtype (FCA-i; 15%), diffuse cerebral vasculitis (15%), and nonspecific arteriopathy (18.5%). Children with arteriopathic AIS were more likely to present between 6 and 9 years of age (odds ratio [OR] 1.93, p = 0.029) with headache (OR 1.55, p = 0.023), multiple infarctions (OR 2.05, p less then 0.001), sickle cell anemia (OR 2.9, p = 0.007), and head/neck trauma (OR 1.93, p = 0.018). Antithrombotic use and stroke recurrence were higher in children with arteriopathy. Among arteriopathy subtypes, dissection was associated with male sex, older age, headache, and anticoagulant use; FCA-i was associated with hemiparesis and single infarcts; moyamoya was associated with seizures and recurrent strokes; and vasculitis was associated with bilateral infarctions. Conclusion Specific clinical profiles are associated with cerebral arteriopathies in children with AIS. A total of 46 cases were enrolled, including ApoE-ɛ4 carriers (n = 21) and noncarriers (n = 25). Results Levels of these proteins were compared between ApoE-ɛ4 carriers and noncarriers. ApoE-ɛ4 was associated with impaired mitochondrial structure and function, oxidative stress, and synaptic integrity in the human brain. Correlation analysis revealed that mitochondrial proteins and the synaptic protein were strongly associated with cognitive performance. Conclusion ApoE isoforms influence mitochondrial structure and function, which likely leads to alteration in oxidative stress, synapses, and cognitive function. The balance tests consisted of the step test, Timed Up and Go test, feet-together stance, tandem stance, 1-leg stance, and modified Clinical Test of Sensory Integration and Balance on a balance platform. The functional mobility tests consisted of the 10-m walk test (10mWT) and 10-times Sit-to-Stand test. Results The HHD and stationary dynamometry had sufficient intrarater reliability for most muscle groups on a group (SEM% ≤15%) and individual (minimal detectable difference [MDD95%] ≤30%) level, but the HHD was most reliable. Stationary dynamometry measured a higher torque than HHD for all extensor muscles, but for single individuals, none of the devices were favored.

CONCLUSIONS Self-connection, as measured by the SCS, has an important role in positive psychology, and those with a deficit are likely to benefit the most from increased mindfulness. Together, this provides several implications for using mindfulness and self-connection research in personal and professional practice. © 2020 The International Association of Applied Psychology.INTRODUCTION The aim of the present study was to assess how regional brain volumes associate with self-experienced social and emotional loneliness and social competence in very preterm and term-born preadolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-four very preterm subjects (birthweight ≤1,500 g and/or gestational age less then 32 weeks) without neurodevelopmental impairments and/or major brain pathologies and 31 term-born subjects underwent magnetic resonance imaging at 12 years of age. Regional brain volumes were measured using an automated image quantification tool. At 11 years of age, social and emotional loneliness were assessed with the Peer Network and Dyadic Loneliness Scale-self-report questionnaire and cooperating skills, empathy, impulsivity, and disruptiveness with the Multisource Assessment of Children's Social Competence Scale-self-report questionnaire. RESULTS In the very preterm group, a number of significant associations were found between smaller regional brain volumes and self-experienced emotional loneliness, more impulsivity and more disruptiveness. In the control group, brain volumes and loneliness were not associated, and brain volumes and social competence were associated with a lesser degree than in the very preterm group. CONCLUSION Experiences of emotional loneliness and poorer social competence appear to be more related to brain volumes in very preterm preadolescents than in those born full-term. It also appears that in very preterm preadolescents, emotional loneliness may be more reflected in brain development than social loneliness. © 2020 The Authors. Brain and Behavior published by Wiley Periodicals LLC.This study assessed the influence of a 10-day hypoxic bed rest on cartilage biomarkers and subchondral bone density across the patellofemoral joint (PFJ). Within clinical settings hypoxic tissue may arise in several types of disorders. Furthermore, a hypoxic environment is being considered for space flight habitats in the near future. Female participants (N = 12) participated in this study comprising three 10-day interventions hypoxic ambulation (HAMB), normoxic bed rest (NBR), and hypoxic bed rest (HBR). Venous samples were collected prior to (day -2 Pre) and during the intervention (days 2 and 5), immediately before reambulation (D11) and 24 hr post intervention (R1). Blood samples were analyzed for aggrecan, hyaluronan, Type IIA procollagen amino terminal propeptide (PIIANP), and cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP). Total bone mineral density (BMD) in eight regions (2 mm × 10 mm) across the PFJ was determined. The three interventions (HAMB, HBR, and NBR) did not induce any significant changes in the cartilage biomarkers of hyaluronan or PIIANP. Aggrecan increased during the HAMB trial to 2.02 fold the Pre value. COMP decreased significantly in both NBR & HBR compared to HAMB on D5. There were significant differences in BMD measured across the PFJ from cortical patellar bone (735 to 800 mg/cm3 ) to femur trabecular (195 to 226 mg/cm3 ). However, there were no significant changes in BMD from Pre to Post bed rest. These results indicate that there were no significant detectable effects of inactivity/unloading on subchondral bone density. In C57BL/6J ****, developmental trajectories were observed for stance width, paw overlap distance, braking and propulsion time, rate of stance loading, peak paw area, and metrics of intraindividual variability. In FVB/AntJ ****, developmental trajectories were observed for percent shared stance, paw overlap distance, rate of stance loading, and peak paw area, although in different directions than C57 ****. By accounting for the impact of body length on stride measurements, we demonstrate the importance of considering body length when interpreting gait metrics. CONCLUSION Overall, our results show that aspects of mouse gait development parallel a timeline of normal human gait development, such as the percent of stride that is stance phase and swing phase. Electroantennogram tests indicated that 8 of the 14 compounds induced responses in female H. assulta. Among these eight volatiles, nonanal greatly increased oviposition preference. Single-sensillum recording (SSR) results showed that many neurons housed in three types of short basiconic sensilla and four types of long basiconic sensilla responded to nonanal and heptanal as its structural analogue.
CONCLUSIONS Self-connection, as measured by the SCS, has an important role in positive psychology, and those with a deficit are likely to benefit the most from increased mindfulness. Together, this provides several implications for using mindfulness and self-connection research in personal and professional practice. © 2020 The International Association of Applied Psychology.INTRODUCTION The aim of the present study was to assess how regional brain volumes associate with self-experienced social and emotional loneliness and social competence in very preterm and term-born preadolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-four very preterm subjects (birthweight ≤1,500 g and/or gestational age less then 32 weeks) without neurodevelopmental impairments and/or major brain pathologies and 31 term-born subjects underwent magnetic resonance imaging at 12 years of age. Regional brain volumes were measured using an automated image quantification tool. At 11 years of age, social and emotional loneliness were assessed with the Peer Network and Dyadic Loneliness Scale-self-report questionnaire and cooperating skills, empathy, impulsivity, and disruptiveness with the Multisource Assessment of Children's Social Competence Scale-self-report questionnaire. RESULTS In the very preterm group, a number of significant associations were found between smaller regional brain volumes and self-experienced emotional loneliness, more impulsivity and more disruptiveness. In the control group, brain volumes and loneliness were not associated, and brain volumes and social competence were associated with a lesser degree than in the very preterm group. CONCLUSION Experiences of emotional loneliness and poorer social competence appear to be more related to brain volumes in very preterm preadolescents than in those born full-term. It also appears that in very preterm preadolescents, emotional loneliness may be more reflected in brain development than social loneliness. © 2020 The Authors. Within clinical settings hypoxic tissue may arise in several types of disorders. Furthermore, a hypoxic environment is being considered for space flight habitats in the near future. Female participants (N = 12) participated in this study comprising three 10-day interventions hypoxic ambulation (HAMB), normoxic bed rest (NBR), and hypoxic bed rest (HBR). Venous samples were collected prior to (day -2 Pre) and during the intervention (days 2 and 5), immediately before reambulation (D11) and 24 hr post intervention (R1). Blood samples were analyzed for aggrecan, hyaluronan, Type IIA procollagen amino terminal propeptide (PIIANP), and cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP). Total bone mineral density (BMD) in eight regions (2 mm × 10 mm) across the PFJ was determined. The three interventions (HAMB, HBR, and NBR) did not induce any significant changes in the cartilage biomarkers of hyaluronan or PIIANP. Aggrecan increased during the HAMB trial to 2.02 fold the Pre value. COMP decreased significantly in both NBR & HBR compared to HAMB on D5. There were significant differences in BMD measured across the PFJ from cortical patellar bone (735 to 800 mg/cm3 ) to femur trabecular (195 to 226 mg/cm3 ). However, there were no significant changes in BMD from Pre to Post bed rest. These results indicate that there were no significant detectable effects of inactivity/unloading on subchondral bone density. OBJECTIVE To examine the association of maternal lifetime experiences of racial discrimination with infant sleep duration over the first 2 years of life. DESIGN Prebirth cohort study. SETTING Massachusetts, USA (baseline 1999-2002). PARTICIPANTS 552 mother-infant dyads in Project Viva, for whom the mother self-identified as being a woman of color. MEASUREMENTS During pregnancy, mothers completed the Experiences of Discrimination survey that measured lifetime experiences of racial discrimination in eight domains. The main outcome was a weighted average of their infants' 24-hour sleep duration from 6 months to 2 years. RESULTS 30% reported 0 domains of racial discrimination, 35% 1-2 domains, and 34% ≥3 domains. Any racial discrimination (≥1 vs. 0 domains) was higher among black (80%) versus Hispanic (58%) or Asian (53%) mothers and the United States versus foreign-born mothers (79% vs. 58%) and was associated with higher mean prepregnancy BMI (26.8 vs. 24.5 kg/m2). Children whose mothers reported ≥3 domains versus 0 domains had shorter sleep duration from 6 months to 2 years in unadjusted analysis (β -18.6 min/d; 95% CI -37.3, 0.0), which was attenuated after adjusting for maternal race/ethnicity and nativity (-13.6 min/d; -33.7, 6.5). We found stronger associations of racial discrimination with offspring sleep at 6 months (-49.3 min/d; -85.3, -13.2) than for sleep at 1 year (-13.5 min/d; -47.2, 20.3) or 2 years (4.2 min/d; -21.5, 29.9). CONCLUSIONS Maternal lifetime experiences of racial discrimination was associated with shorter offspring sleep duration at 6 months, but not with infant's sleep at 1 and 2 years of age. DESIGN A cross-sectional province-wide and school-based survey of 7th to 12th graders (mean age 15.1 years). PARTICIPANTS The sample consisted of 4,991 students from the 2015 cycle of the Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey (Canada). MEASUREMENTS Participants self-reported time spent using social media, total screen time, physical activity, sleep duration, and body weight and height. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to examine the association between social media use and BMI z-scores. Given that the sex by social media use interaction term was significant, analyses were stratified by sex. RESULTS After adjusting for age, ethnic background, subjective socioeconomic status, frequency of breakfast consumption, and physical activity, heavy social media use (>2 hours/day) was associated with higher BMI z-scores among males (β=0.323, 95% CI 0.094; 0.551) than among females (β=0.036, 95% CI -0.292; 0.364). This association remained significant after further adjusting for total screen time. Results also showed that sleep duration mediates the association between social media use and BMI z-scores among men. CONCLUSION Our results showed that short sleep duration is a concurrent mediator of the relationship between social media use and BMI z-scores among males. METHODS Data of 114,496 respondents aged ≥18 years in 19 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico from the 2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were analyzed. Prevalence of short sleep duration ( less then 7 hours per 24-hour period) by caregiving status was calculated, and adjusted prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were derived from a multivariable logistic regression model with adjustment for potential covariates. RESULTS Nearly 1 of 5 adults reported caregiving within the past month. A higher prevalence of short sleep duration was reported among caregivers (39.5%) than among non-caregivers (34.2%, adjusted PR [95% CI] = 1.12 [1.06-1.19]). Caregivers who reported prolonged caregiving (≥5 years) reported a higher prevalence of short sleep duration than those with less then 2 years of caregiving. Similarly, caregivers who provided 20-39 hours of caregiving per week reported a higher prevalence of short sleep duration than those with less then 20 hours caregiving per week. CONCLUSIONS Caregivers had a higher prevalence of short sleep duration than noncaregivers. Providing information and community-based resources and supports for caregiving may minimize caregiver stress and improve sleep particularly for those with prolonged or more intense caregiving.

Single-molecule FISH (smFISH) has been widely used in animal tissue to localize and quantify RNAs with high specificity. This protocol describes an smFISH method optimized for highly autofluorescent plant tissue. It provides details on fixation buffers and protocols to protect the integrity of plant samples. We also provide smFISH hybridization conditions to detect plant RNA with ~50 fluorescently labeled DNA oligonucleotides. In addition, this protocol provides instructions on linear spectral unmixing of smFISH signal from background autofluorescence by confocal microscopy and a method to quantify the smFISH spots that reflect the copy number of target RNA.To understand the development and differentiation processes within a tissue and a cell, analysis of the cell type-specific gene expression pattern as well as the subcellular localization of the produced RNAs is essential. The simplest and fastest method to visualize RNA molecules is in situ hybridization (ISH) on whole-tissue samples. Over the past 40 years, various labeling and visualization techniques have been established to analyze either the expression domain of genes in tissues (using the classical chromogenic detection system) or the specific subcellular localization of mRNAs (using fluorescently labeled probes). More than 50 different monogenic disorders causing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been identified. Our goal was to characterize the clinical phenotype, genetic workup, and immunologic alterations in an Ashkenazi Jewish patient that presented during infancy with ulcerative colitis and unique clinical manifestations.
Immune workup and whole-exome sequencing were performed, along with Sanger sequencing for confirmation. Next-generation sequencing of the TCRB and IgH was conducted for immune repertoire analysis. Telomere length was evaluated by in-gel hybridization assay. Mass cytometry was performed on patient's peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and compared with control subjects and patients with UC.
The patient presented in infancy with failure to thrive and dysmorphic features, consistent with a diagnosis of dyskeratosis congenita and Hoyeraal-Hreidarsson syndrome. Severe ulcerativecolitis manifested in the first year of life and proceeded to the development of a primary immunodeficiency, presenting as Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia and hypogammaglobulinemia. Genetic studies identified a deleterious homozygous C.3791G>A missense mutation in the helicase regulator of telomere elongation 1 (RTEL1), leading to short telomeres in the index patient. Immune repertoire studies showed polyclonal T and B cell receptor distribution, while mass cytometry analysis demonstrated marked immunological alterations, including a predominance of naïve T cells, paucity of B cells, and a decrease in various innate immune subsets.
RTEL1 mutations are associated with significant alterations in immune landscape and can manifest with infantile-onset IBD. A high index of suspicion is required in Ashkenazi Jewish families where the carriage rate of the C.3791G>A variant is high.

Alemtuzumab efficacy versus subcutaneous interferon-β-1a (SC IFNB-1a) was demonstrated over 2 years in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, with continued efficacy over 7 additional years. Alemtuzumab is included as a recommended treatment for patients with highly active disease (HAD) by the American Academy of Neurology Practice Guidelines, and the label indication in Europe was recently restricted to the treatment of HAD patients. Single-molecule FISH (smFISH) has been widely used in animal tissue to localize and quantify RNAs with high specificity. This protocol describes an smFISH method optimized for highly autofluorescent plant tissue. It provides details on fixation buffers and protocols to protect the integrity of plant samples. We also provide smFISH hybridization conditions to detect plant RNA with ~50 fluorescently labeled DNA oligonucleotides. In addition, this protocol provides instructions on linear spectral unmixing of smFISH signal from background autofluorescence by confocal microscopy and a method to quantify the smFISH spots that reflect the copy number of target RNA.To understand the development and differentiation processes within a tissue and a cell, analysis of the cell type-specific gene expression pattern as well as the subcellular localization of the produced RNAs is essential. The simplest and fastest method to visualize RNA molecules is in situ hybridization (ISH) on whole-tissue samples. Some of the results are phosphorous is stored in petiole cells of turions during winter; mucilaginous guides are provided for pollen tubes in parietal placental ovaries; storage of potassium in the vicinity of the midrib of carnivorous leaves may contribute to the rapid closing of the carnivorous leaves; dynamic sequential changes of the ultrastructure of digestive glands is involved in synthesis and secretion of digestive enzymes including protease and acid phosphatase. RESULTS Among 966 articles identified in the search, 126 full text articles were reviewed, and 24 studies were included (11 prospective, 9 cross-sectional, and 4 case studies). Marked heterogeneity was found in study populations, measures defining SWD, and time from injury to evaluation. Studies showed at least 20% of children with TBI had trouble falling or staying asleep, fatigue, daytime sleepiness, and nightmares. SWD are negatively correlated with post-traumatic cognitive, behavioral, and quality of life outcomes. No comparative intervention studies were identified. Risk of bias was moderate-high for all studies often related to lack of validated or objective SWD measures and small sample size. Heterogeneity precluded meta-analyses. CONCLUSIONS SWD are important morbidities after pediatric TBI, though current data is limited. BACKGROUND Subfertile women have higher risk of glucose intolerance during pregnancy. Studies suggest associations between several endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and pregnancy glucose levels. However, the association between benzophenone-3 (BP-3), an EDC widely found in sunscreen, and pregnancy glucose levels remains unclear. We aimed to assess the association between perinatal exposures to BP-3 and pregnancy glucose levels in subfertile women. METHODS We evaluated 217 women from a prospective cohort based at a fertility clinic who had urinary BP-3 concentrations measured during 3-month preconception, first and/or second trimesters, and blood glucose measured at glucose load tests (GLTs) during late pregnancy. Multivariable linear and logistic regression models were used to assess associations between time-specific BP-3 in quartiles (Q1 - Q4) and mean glucose levels, as well as odds of abnormal GLT (glucose level ≥ 140 mg/dL), adjusting for potential confounders. Effect modification was assessed by age, season, BMI, infertility diagnosis, sex of fetus (es) and physical activity. RESULTS Women with higher first trimester BP-3 concentrations had lower mean glucose levels [mean glucose (95% CI) for Q4 vs Q1 = 103.4 (95.0, 112.5) vs. 114.6 (105.8, 124.2) mg/dL]. Women with higher second trimester BP-3 concentrations had lower odds of abnormal GLT [OR (95% CI) for Q3 vs. Q1 = 0.12 (0.01, 0.94)]. The associations between BP-3 and glucose levels were modified by several factors women with female-factor infertility, urine collected during summer, older age, lower BMI, or carried female fetus (es) had the strongest inverse associations between BP-3 and glucose levels, while no associations were observed in the remaining subgroups. CONCLUSIONS Time-specific inverse associations between BP-3 and pregnancy glucose levels existed in subfertile women, and especially among certain subgroups of this high-risk-population.BACKGROUND Exenatide is an insulinotropic peptide drug for type 2 diabetes treatment with low risk of hypoglycemia, and is administrated by subcutaneous injection. RESULTS Two types of nanoparticles, named COM NPs and DIS NPs, were fabricated using anti-solvent precipitation method. In COM NPs, the exenatide was complexed with cholic acid and phosphatidylcholine to increase the exenatide loading efficiency. Using prolamin to produce multifunctional nanoparticles for oral delivery of peptide drug by hydrophobic interaction is a simple and effective strategy.BACKGROUND Population aging is an inevitable trend and previous studies have showed the relationship between social health related factors and health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) in the elderly. The objective of this study is to investigate the association of social health status with HR-QOL among community-dwelling elderly in Zhejiang. METHODS This cross-sectional study was based on community-dwelling elderly individuals from July 2018 to September 2018 in Zhejiang, China. HR-QOL was measured by the 12-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12). Social health status was estimated by the long-form of the Social Health Scale for the Elderly (SHSE-L) and classified into three categories (poor, moderate and good). Multivariable linear regression models were conducted to evaluate the association between social health status and HR-QOL (PCS, MCS and SF-12 total score). RESULTS A total of 2952 elderly participants were included in this study. The mean age was 70.68 ± 7.75 years (mean ± SD); of the eligible participants, more than half (50.4%) were females; the mean scores were 48.10 ± 8.49, 47.70 ± 7.09 and 47.90 ± 5.86 for PCS, MCS and SF-12 total score, separately. Results from the multivariable models showed that social health status was positively related to HR-QOL after adjusting for covariates. Compared with individuals with a poor social health status, those who had a moderate or good social health status were more likely to report better HR-QOL (for moderate social health status β = 1.90(95%CI 1.09, 2.71) for PCS, β = 1.78(1.08, 2.48) for MCS, β = 1.84(1.29, 2.39) for SF-12 total score; for good social health status β = 3.29(2.24, 4.34) for PCS, β = 3.10(2.12, 4.01) for MCS, β = 3.20(2.48, 3.91) for SF-12 total score). Herein, we sought to identify miRNAs differentially expressed between M1 and M2 macrophage-derived exosomes, and to evaluate their roles in the context of osteoblast differentiation. RESULTS We found that microRNA-5106 (miR-5106) was significantly overexpressed in M2 macrophage-derived exosomes (M2D-Exos), while its expression was decreased in M1 macrophage-derived exosomes (M1D-Exos), and we found that this exosomal miRNA can induce bone mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) osteogenic differentiation via directly targeting the Salt-inducible kinase 2 and 3 (SIK2 and SIK3) genes.

METHODS This cross-sectional study was based on community-dwelling elderly individuals from July 2018 to September 2018 in Zhejiang, China. HR-QOL was measured by the 12-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12). Social health status was estimated by the long-form of the Social Health Scale for the Elderly (SHSE-L) and classified into three categories (poor, moderate and good). Multivariable linear regression models were conducted to evaluate the association between social health status and HR-QOL (PCS, MCS and SF-12 total score). RESULTS A total of 2952 elderly participants were included in this study. The mean age was 70.68 ± 7.75 years (mean ± SD); of the eligible participants, more than half (50.4%) were females; the mean scores were 48.10 ± 8.49, 47.70 ± 7.09 and 47.90 ± 5.86 for PCS, MCS and SF-12 total score, separately. Results from the multivariable models showed that social health status was positively related to HR-QOL after adjusting for covariates. Compared with individuals with a poor social health status, those who had a moderate or good social health status were more likely to report better HR-QOL (for moderate social health status β = 1.90(95%CI 1.09, 2.71) for PCS, β = 1.78(1.08, 2.48) for MCS, β = 1.84(1.29, 2.39) for SF-12 total score; for good social health status β = 3.29(2.24, 4.34) for PCS, β = 3.10(2.12, 4.01) for MCS, β = 3.20(2.48, 3.91) for SF-12 total score). Discussion PMVS thrombosis related to protein S deficiency is a rare condition that can rapidly lead to an acute abdomen. CECT is the gold standard, because it detects splanchnic thrombosis and its possible complications, like bowel ischemia. In case of surgery, a planned second-look operation is the best strategy to assess bowel viability and possible ischemic progression. The prominent structure had muscular layer, suggestive of distal appendiceal remnant. Discussion Surgical resection of appendiceal mucus-filled lesion is recommended, because there are no reliable criteria to exclude malignant lesions. Although appendiceal mucus-filled lesion is rare, it is extremely rare in patients with previous appendectomy. In our case, the mucinous material secreted from the remnant appendix might be enclosed by the surrounding tissue. Conclusion In patient with previous appendectomy who show a cystic mass close to the cecum, the possibility of lesion derived from the appendiceal stump or distal appendiceal remnant should be considered. In such cases, it is important to review the medical records for a definitive diagnosis. Due to the rarity of such a presentation, the surprise encounter during groin surgery may lead to suboptimal treatment. Perforated colorectal cancer, like in our case, may signify a more aggressive disease, and hence a correct diagnosis is crucial to improve outcomes. When underlying colon cancer is suspected during hernia surgeries, proper exploration and oncologic resection might be the optimal choice. Conclusion Surgeons should keep the possibility of underlying colorectal cancer in mind when operating on inguinal hernias and opt for oncologic resection of the identified tumor along with proper lymph node dissection.Introduction Advanced-stage thymic malignancies are a heterogeneous group of mediastinal tumors that include thymoma and thymic carcinoma infiltrating the surrounding thoracic structures. We herein report a case of SVC replacement for thymic carcinoma en bloc radical resection. Case presentation A 75-year-old Japanese man presented at our hospital due to progressive dyspnea and edema of his face and upper extremities. CT showed a 55 × 40 × 38-mm tumor located at the anterior mediastinum lesion. This tumor had invaded the superior vena cava and both brachiocephalic veins. We performed surgical resection for the thymic carcinoma located at the mediastinum that invaded the superior vena cava and both brachiocephalic veins. The surgery was performed through a full median sternotomy and transmanubrial approach without using an artificial heart and lung.

In the second set, peak HR and average HR were increased to 196 ± 8 bpm (p less then 0.001, d = 0.55) and to 89 ± 4% HRmax (p less then 0.001, d = 2.19), respectively, compared with the first set. HR was above 80% HRmax for 4.1 ± 1.2 min during set 1 and this was increased to 5.1 ± 0.4 min in set 2 (p less then 0.001, d = 1.15). The switch modulator is designed based on a hybrid plasmonic waveguide structure, which is comprised of an SiO2 substrate, graphene-Si-graphene heterostructure, Ag nanowire and SiO2 cladding. The propagation length of the hybrid plasmonic waveguide varies from 0.14 μm to 20.43 μm by the voltage tunability of graphene in 1550 nm incident light. A modulator with a length of 3 μm is designed based on the hybrid waveguide and it achieves about 100% modulation depth. In late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Germany, the integration of product-evaluating certificates and reports (Gutachten) into advertisements triggered repeated condemnations of "advertisement-Gutachten" (Reklamegutachten), and scientists and science administrators introduced various restrictions to prevent the appearance of such documents. At the same time, the provision of Gutachten to private individuals and firms seemed crucial to the success of many private and public laboratories. Some chemical and other professionals, moreover, argued that the authoring and use of Reklamegutachten could represent a "scientific" and, therefore, ethical practice. Negatively worded descriptive normative messaging should be used with caution since it resulted in the highest risk perceptions of the HPV vaccine, compared to positively worded descriptive norms and basic information messages. Methods We analyzed 47 consecutive index finger silastic interposition arthroplasties, performed through a dorsal approach, at a mean follow-up of 5.15 years. Results Only 2 patients had ulnar deviation greater than 15°. The reoperation rate was 12.8%, with only 1 finger requiring arthrodesis. The mean Visual Analog Scale score was 1.1; and of the whole series, only 1 patient would retrospectively have preferred a fusion. Conclusions Our series shows that excellent functional results and patient satisfaction can be gained using silastic PIP joint arthroplasty in the index finger. We would advocate offering this procedure, especially in lower demand patients as an alternative to arthrodesis, with the benefit of providing good pain relief while preserving movement.The aim of this study was to compare the antibiotic susceptibility of eighty Escherichia coli isolates from vegetables and food products of animal origin in Tunisia, and to study their genes encoding antibiotic resistance and in vitro biofilm forming capacity. Antimicrobial susceptibilities were determined, as well as PCR investigation of genes associated with antibiotic resistance. Biofilm formation was tested using four different methods the microtiter plate-, MTT-staining-, XTT-staining-, and the Congo Red Agar assays. High antibiotic resistance rates were observed for amoxicillin (68.7%), amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (73.7%), gentamicin (68.7%), kanamycin (66.2%), nalidixic acid (36.2%), streptomycin (68.7%) and tetracycline (35%). The majority of isolates was multidrug resistant and biofilm producer. MTT testing showed that vegetables isolates were significantly higher biofilm producers compared to foods of animal origins. This study showed that E. coli isolates from food products were reservoirs of genes encoding antibiotic-resistance and have a high propensity to produce biofilm.

Little is known about life in the boron-rich hot springs of Trans-Himalayas. Here, we explore the geomicrobiology of a 4438-m-high spring which emanates ~70 °C-water from a boratic microbialite called Shivlinga. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/gilteritinib-asp2215.html Due to low atmospheric pressure, the vent-water is close to boiling point so can entropically destabilize biomacromolecular systems. Microbial diversity was high along both of the hydrothermal gradients. Bacteria, Eukarya and Archaea constituted >98%, ~1% and 45 °C. Shivlinga's geomicrobiology highlights the possibility that the system's kosmotrope-dominated chemistry mitigates against the biomacromolecule-disordering effects of its thermal water.Drylands cover 41% of Earth's surface and are the largest source of interannual variability in the global carbon sink. Drylands are projected to experience accelerated expansion over the next century, but the implications of this expansion on variability in gross primary production (GPP) remain elusive. Here we show that by 2100 total dryland GPP will increase by 12 ± 3% relative to the 2000-2014 baseline. Because drylands will largely expand into formerly productive ecosystems, this increase in dryland GPP may not increase global GPP. Further, GPP per unit dryland area will decrease as degradation of historical drylands outpaces the higher GPP of expanded drylands. Dryland expansion and climate-induced conversions among sub-humid, semi-arid, arid, and hyper-arid subtypes will lead to substantial changes in regional and subtype contributions to global dryland GPP variability. Our results highlight the vulnerability of dryland subtypes to more frequent and severe climate extremes and suggest that regional variations will require different mitigation strategies.Accurate classification of adenocarcinoma (AC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in lung cancer is critical to physicians' clinical decision-making. Exhaled breath analysis provides a tremendous potential approach in non-invasive diagnosis of lung cancer but was rarely reported for lung cancer subtypes classification. In this paper, we firstly proposed a combined method, integrating K-nearest neighbor classifier (KNN), borderline2-synthetic minority over-sampling technique (borderlin2-SMOTE), and feature reduction methods, to investigate the ability of exhaled breath to distinguish AC from SCC patients. The classification performance of the proposed method was compared with the results of four classification algorithms under different combinations of borderline2-SMOTE and feature reduction methods. The result indicated that the KNN classifier combining borderline2-SMOTE and feature reduction methods was the most promising method to discriminate AC from SCC patients and obtained the highest mean area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (0.63) and mean geometric mean (58.50) when compared to others classifiers. The result revealed that the combined algorithm could improve the classification performance of lung cancer subtypes in breathomics and suggested that combining non-invasive exhaled breath analysis with multivariate analysis is a promising screening method for informing treatment options and facilitating individualized treatment of lung cancer subtypes patients.Thirty-nine UK adapted wheat cultivars dating from between 1790 and 2012 were grown in replicated randomised field trials for three years, milled, and white flour analysed for the contents of dietary fibre components (arabinoxylan and β-glucan) and polar metabolites (sugars, amino acids, organic acids, choline and betaine) to determine whether the composition had changed due to the effects of intensive breeding. The concentrations of components varied between study years, indicating strong effects of environment. Nevertheless, some trends were observed, with the concentrations of arabinoxylan fibre and soluble sugars (notably sucrose, maltose and fructose) increasing and most amino acids (including asparagine which is the precursor of acrylamide formed during processing) decreasing between the older and newer types. The concentration of betaine, which is beneficial for cardio-vascular health, also increased. The study therefore provided no evidence for adverse effects of intensive breeding on the contents of beneficial components in wheat flour.Metacognition can be deployed retrospectively -to reflect on the correctness of our behavior- or prospectively -to make predictions of success in one's future behavior or make decisions about strategies to solve future problems. We investigated the factors that determine prospective decision making. Human participants performed a visual discrimination task followed by ratings of visibility and response confidence. Prior to each trial, participants made prospective judgments. In Experiment 1, they rated their belief of future success. In Experiment 2, they rated their decision to adopt a focused attention state. Prospective beliefs of success were associated with no performance changes while prospective decisions to engage attention were followed by better self-evaluation of the correctness of behavioral responses. Using standard machine learning classifiers we found that the current prospective decision could be predicted from information concerning task-correctness, stimulus visibility and response confidence from previous trials. In both Experiments, awareness and confidence were more diagnostic of the prospective decision than task correctness. Notably, classifiers trained with prospective beliefs of success in Experiment 1 predicted decisions to engage in Experiment 2 and vice-versa. These results indicate that the formation of these seemingly different prospective decisions share a common, dynamic representational structure.
