Samples were obtained before and after diet-induced weight loss in well-defined male individuals in a prospective controlled clinical trial (ICTRP Trial Number U1111-1158-3672). The BMI declined significantly (- 12.6%) in the treatment arm (N = 39) during the 6-month weight loss intervention. This was associated with a significant reduction in hsCRP (- 45.84%) and circulating CD14+ cells (- 21.0%). Four genes were differentially expressed (DEG's) in CD14+ cells following weight loss (ZRANB1, RNF25, RB1CC1 and KMT2C). Moreover, little attention has been paid to the effect of energy metabolism on this phenomenon and its reprogramming in cancer. Here, we perform precise two-dimensional mechanical phenotyping based on power-law rheology to unveil the contributions of myosin II, actin fiber architecture and energy metabolism to the deformability of healthy (MCF-10A), noninvasive cancerous (MCF-7), and metastatic (MDA-MB-231) human breast epithelial cells. Contrary to the perception that the actin cortex is a passive structure that provides mechanical resistance to the cell, we find that this is only true when the actin cortex is activated by metabolic processes. The results show marked differences in the nature of the active processes that build up cell stiffness, namely that healthy cells use ATP-driven actin polymerization whereas metastatic cells use myosin II activity. Noninvasive cancerous cells exhibit an anomalous behavior, as their stiffness is not as affected by the lack of nutrients and ATP, suggesting that energy metabolism reprogramming is used to sustain active processes at the actin cortex.Valproic acid (VPA) is a drug commonly used for epileptic seizure control. Recently, it has been shown that VPA alters the activation of several immune cells, including Natural Killer (NK) cells, which play an important role in the containment of viruses and intracellular bacteria. Although VPA can increase susceptibility to extracellular pathogens, it is unknown whether the suppressor effect of VPA could affect the course of intracellular bacterial infection. This study aimed to evaluate the role of VPA during Listeria monocytogenes (L.m) infection, and whether NK cell activation was affected. We found that VPA significantly augmented mortality in L.m infected ****. This effect was associated with increased bacterial load in the spleen, liver, and blood. Concurrently, decreased levels of IFN-γ in serum and lower splenic indexes were observed. Moreover, in vitro analysis showed that VPA treatment decreased the frequency of IFN-γ-producing NK cells within L.m infected splenocytes. Similarly, VPA inhibited the production of IFN-γ by NK cells stimulated with IL-12 and IL-18, which is a crucial system for early IFN-γ production in listeriosis. Finally, VPA decreased the phosphorylation of STAT4, p65, and p38, without affecting the expression of IL-12 and IL-18 receptors. Altogether, our results indicate that VPA increases the susceptibility to Listeria monocytogenes infection and suggest that NK cell is one of the main targets of VPA, but further work is needed to ascertain this effect.

In this study, the Bt strain KhF, toxic for Plodia interpunctella and Grapholita molesta larvae, underwent genomics and proteomics analyses to achieve a better understanding of the bases of its pathogenicity. The whole-genome sequencing results revealed that the KhF strain contained nine coding sequences with homologies to Bt insecticidal genes. The lepidopteran toxic mixture of spores and crystals of this Bt strain was subjected to liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to assess the protein composition. The results of the proteomic analyses, combined with the toxin gene sequences, revealed that two of the main components of the crystals were two new candidate pesticidal proteins, named KhFA and KhFB. These proteins showed a similarity lower than 36% to the other known Bt toxins. Recent studies provided evidence for protective roles of BCP in animal cells, highlighting its possible use as a novel therapeutic tool. Experimental results show the ability of BCP to reduce pro-inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor-alfa (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), thus ameliorating chronic pathologies characterized by inflammation and oxidative stress, in particular metabolic and neurological diseases. Through the binding to CB2 cannabinoid receptors and the interaction with members of the family of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), BCP shows beneficial effects on obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease/nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NAFLD/NASH) liver diseases, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, pain and other nervous system disorders. This review describes the current knowledge on the biosynthesis and natural sources of BCP, and reviews its role and mechanisms of action in different inflammation-related metabolic and neurologic disorders.High-ornithine-producing Weissella koreensis DB1 were isolated from kimchi. Ornithine is produced from arginine via the intracellular arginine deiminase pathway in microorganisms; thus, high cell growth is important for producing ornithine in large quantities. In this study, excellent W. koreensis DB1 growth (A600 5.15-5.39) was achieved in de Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe (MRS) medium supplemented with 1.0-3.0% arginine (pH 5.0) over 24-48 h at 30 °C, and the highest ornithine (15,059.65 mg/L) yield was obtained by culture in MRS containing 3.0% arginine for 48 h. W. koreensis DB1 was further investigated as a functional starter culture for rice bran fermentation. After 48 h of fermentation at 30 °C, the fermented rice bran was freeze-dried and ground. The prepared fermented rice bran contained 43,074.13 mg/kg of ornithine and 27,336.37 mg/kg of citrulline, which are used as healthcare supplements due to their beneficial effects. Furthermore, the organoleptic quality of the fermented rice bran was significantly improved, and the fermented product contained viable cells (8.65 log CFU/mL) and abundant dietary fiber. In addition, an investigation of its safety status showed that it has no harmful characteristics. Of the 6 PAEs measured, only three, including di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate (DEHP) and di-isononyl phthalate (DiNP), were identified and quantified. The total concentration of the 3 PAEs congeners found in the sediment samples ranged from 190 to 2010 ng/g dw. The results from the SQGs and RQ were not consistent with each other. The SQGs results for individual PAEs showed that DEHP and DBP found in sediment was estimated to cause moderate risk on benthic organisms, DiNP was not estimated due to lack of SQGs data. However, the RQ method indicated a low risk of DEHP and DBP on algae, crustacean and fish, whereas DiNP poses no risk on crustacean. Furthermore, based on the result obtained in this study, the consensus SQGs for mixture effects prove to be a more protective tool than the RQ concentration addition approach in predicting mixture effects. Despite inevitable uncertainties, the integration of several screening approaches of ecological risk assessment (ERA) can help get a more inclusive and credible result of the first tier of individuals and a mixture of these pollutants.Studies on fat intake and obesity have been inconclusive. We collected detailed dietary data by conducting three 24-h dietary recalls and weighing foods and condiments in household inventories. We examined the associations between fat intake and body weight, body mass index (BMI), and the risk of overweight and obesity with random-effects linear or logistic regression models for panel data. The Chinese population's fat intake, percentage of energy intake from fat, and prevalence of high-fat diets (energy intake from fat > 30%) increased from 68.5 g per day (g/d), 23.1%, and 22.4%, respectively, in 1991 to 79.3 g/d, 35.6%, and 67.2%, respectively, in 2015. The prevalence of overweight and obesity increased from 12.3% to 37.3% during the same period.

The Brain Tumor Social Media (#BTSM) Twitter hashtag was founded in February 2012 as a disease-specific hashtag for patients with brain tumor.
To understand #BTSM's role as a patient support system, we describe user descriptors, growth, interaction, and content sharing.
We analyzed all tweets containing #BTSM from 2012 to 2018 using the Symplur Signals platform to obtain data and to describe Symplur-defined user categories, tweet content, and trends in use over time. We created a network plot with all publicly available retweets involving #BTSM in 2018 to visualize key stakeholders and their connections to other users.
From 2012 to 2018, 59,764 unique users participated in #BTSM, amassing 298,904 tweets. The yearly volume of #BTSM tweets increased by 264.57% from 16,394 in 2012 to 43,373 in 2018 with #BTSM constantly trending in the top 15 list of disease hashtags, as well the top 15 list of tweet chats. Patient advocates generated the most #BTSM tweets (33.13%), while advocacy groups, caregivers, doctors, and researchers generated 7.01%, 4.63%, 3.86%, and 3.37%, respectively. Physician use, although still low, has increased over time. The 2018 network plot of retweets including #BTSM identifies a number of key stakeholders from the patient advocate, patient organization, and medical researcher domains and reveals the extent of their reach to other users.
From its start in 2012, #BTSM has grown exponentially over time. We believe its growth suggests its potential as a global source of brain tumor information on Twitter for patients, advocates, patient organizations as well as health care professionals and researchers.

According to current guidelines, oral antihistamines are the first line treatment for chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). Up-dosing antihistamines up to fourfold the licensed dose is recommended if control is not achieved. Such indications are based mainly on expert´s opinions. Objectives To critically review and analyze clinical evidence regarding to efficacy and safety of higher-than-licensed dosage of second-generation oral antihistamines in CSU treatment.
A systematic literature review following a sensitive search strategy was performed. All articles published in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library between 1961 and October 2018 were examined. The Brain Tumor Social Media (#BTSM) Twitter hashtag was founded in February 2012 as a disease-specific hashtag for patients with brain tumor. To understand #BTSM's role as a patient support system, we describe user descriptors, growth, interaction, and content sharing. We analyzed all tweets containing #BTSM from 2012 to 2018 using the Symplur Signals platform to obtain data and to describe Symplur-defined user categories, tweet content, and trends in use over time. We created a network plot with all publicly available retweets involving #BTSM in 2018 to visualize key stakeholders and their connections to other users. From 2012 to 2018, 59,764 unique users participated in #BTSM, amassing 298,904 tweets. The yearly volume of #BTSM tweets increased by 264.57% from 16,394 in 2012 to 43,373 in 2018 with #BTSM constantly trending in the top 15 list of disease hashtags, as well the top 15 list of tweet chats. Patient advocates generated the most #BTSM tweets (33.13%), while advocacy groups, caregivers, doctors, and researchers generated 7.01%, 4.63%, 3.86%, and 3.37%, respectively. Physician use, although still low, has increased over time. The 2018 network plot of retweets including #BTSM identifies a number of key stakeholders from the patient advocate, patient organization, and medical researcher domains and reveals the extent of their reach to other users. This study examines the frequency, associated factors, and characteristics of healthcare personnel coronavirus disease 2019 cases in a healthcare department that comprises a tertiary hospital and its associated 12 primary healthcare centers.
This study included healthcare personnel that showed symptoms or were in contact with a coronavirus disease 2019 case patient from March 2, 2020 to April 19, 2020. Their evolution and characteristics (age, sex, professional category, type of contact) were recorded. Correlations between the different characteristics and risk of developing coronavirus disease 2019 and severe coronavirus disease 2019 were analyzed using chi-square tests. Their magnitudes were quantified with ORs, AORs, and their 95% CIs using a logistic regression model.
Of the 3,900 healthcare professionals in the department, 1,791 (45.9%) showed symptoms or were part of a contact tracing study. The prevalence of those with symptoms was 20.1% (784/3,900; 95% CI=18.8, 21.4), with coronavirus disease 20 surveillance and monitoring program centred on healthcare personnel enables an understanding of the risk factors that lead to coronavirus disease 2019 among this population. This knowledge allows the refinement of the strategies for disease control and prevention in healthcare personnel during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

This analysis investigates the independent and combined effects of intermittent preventive treatment for malaria in pregnancy and insecticide-treated nets on low birth weight among Malawian children.
Using pooled data sets from 2004, 2010, and 2015-2016 Malawi Demographic and Health Surveys, a total of 18,285 births were analyzed between August and December 2019. Binomial generalized linear regression models with a log-link function explored the associations under consideration.
The overall low birth weight prevalence was 10.3%. Prevalence was lower in children whose mothers used adequate intermittent preventive treatment for malive methods against malaria in pregnancy.

However, the public health effects of cannabis use in the general population remain unclear. This study examines the associations of cannabis use with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in U.S. adults.
The study included 14,818 adults (aged 20-59 years) who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2014 and were free of cardiovascular disease or cancer at baseline. Survey participants were linked to mortality records through December 31, 2015. The outcomes included all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality, and cancer mortality. Descriptive analysis was performed to assess prescription medication use and misuse among adults aged ≥50 years (pooled N=26,322). Investigators identified adult program participants and usual-care patients in the electronic health record between 2010 and 2018 and defined their index date (baseline) as the first lifestyle change program encounter or a random encounter date, respectively. Participants were matched 12 to usual-care patients on baseline demographics and clinical characteristics using propensity-score methods. Because peptidoglycan is the major component of the cell wall and its synthesis is a complex multistep pathway that requires the coordinate action of several enzymes, it provides a target for rival bacteria, which have developed a large arsenal of antibacterial molecules to attack the peptidoglycan of competitors. These molecules include antibiotics, bacteriocins, and contact-dependent effectors that are either secreted into the medium or directly translocated into a target cell. In 2017 the state created a North Carolina Opioid Action Plan, which laid out a multisectoral response to the crisis that included the medical community, law enforcement, emergency medical services, and treatment professionals. It also created a website providing county-level data associated with the crisis. Using this publicly available data, we examine trends and associations between opioid-related mortality and strategies to reduce opioid prescriptions, reduce fatality of overdose, and improve treatment and recovery.METHOD We examine yearly trends from 2010-2017 for statewide unintentional opioid-related death rates, prescription of opioid pills, buprenorphine prescription rates, naloxone administrations, and number of Certified Peer Support Specialists. We compare recent opioid-related death rates for 2015-2017 with an earlier period (2010-2012) at the county level, and examine the associathe intent of the deceased individual may be difficult (suicide versus unintentional). Naloxone administration data only includes data from emergency medical services, not community-administered naloxone, because that data was only available for 2013 and later and is based only on self-reports.CONCLUSIONS The potential efficacy of buprenorphine is promising and should be further explored. The cell wall is essential for bacterial survival by providing mechanical strength to resist osmotic stress. Because peptidoglycan is the major component of the cell wall and its synthesis is a complex multistep pathway that requires the coordinate action of several enzymes, it provides a target for rival bacteria, which have developed a large arsenal of antibacterial molecules to attack the peptidoglycan of competitors. These molecules include antibiotics, bacteriocins, and contact-dependent effectors that are either secreted into the medium or directly translocated into a target cell. In this minireview, we summarize the diversity of these molecules and highlight distinct mechanisms to disrupt the peptidoglycan, giving special attention to molecules that are known or have the potential to be used during interbacterial competitions.The Affordable Care Act made direct and indirect investments in community health centers. Ten years later, more North Carolinians benefit from a stronger primary care safety net that provides a broader scope of comprehensive services, but missed policymaking opportunities leave work to be done to achieve a healthier, more equitable state.The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has resulted in benefits for North Carolina hospitals and the patients they serve. The impact of the ACA is not as great as it might have been due to lack of Medicaid expansion and exigent challenges at the state and local level.The Affordable Care Act has been a lightning rod for litigation, generating hundreds of cases seeking to have all or parts of the law declared illegal. This article focuses on Supreme Court cases that have assessed the ACA over the past decade and highlights those on the Court's pending docket.The Affordable Care Act played a major role in transitioning American health care away from fee-for-service payment. We explore the spread of payment reforms since the implementation of the ACA, both nationally and in North Carolina; the corresponding effects on health care costs and quality; and further steps needed to achieve greater transformation.The passage of the Affordable Care Act had a great impact on the landscape of public health programming and clinical preventive care in North Carolina. Large funding measures have supported community-based prevention efforts and led to policy, systems, and environmental changes to support a healthier population.Prior to the passage of the Affordable Care Act, many individuals across the state and country faced numerous barriers to accessing affordable and quality health care. This paper provides a review of health coverage in North Carolina before the ACA, the impact the ACA has had on access to health care, and how North Carolina could continue to benefit from "complete" implementation of the ACA.This issue of the North Carolina Medical Journal focuses on the 10-year anniversary of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), signed into law on March 23, 2010. Since its inception, the ACA has been highly controversial. Yet, it has contributed to positive improvements in our health care system. In 2017 the state created a North Carolina Opioid Action Plan, which laid out a multisectoral response to the crisis that included the medical community, law enforcement, emergency medical services, and treatment professionals. It also created a website providing county-level data associated with the crisis. Using this publicly available data, we examine trends and associations between opioid-related mortality and strategies to reduce opioid prescriptions, reduce fatality of overdose, and improve treatment and recovery.METHOD We examine yearly trends from 2010-2017 for statewide unintentional opioid-related death rates, prescription of opioid pills, buprenorphine prescription rates, naloxone administrations, and number of Certified Peer Support Specialists. We compare recent opioid-related death rates for 2015-2017 with an earlier period (2010-2012) at the county level, and examine the associathe intent of the deceased individual may be difficult (suicide versus unintentional). Naloxone administration data only includes data from emergency medical services, not community-administered naloxone, because that data was only available for 2013 and later and is based only on self-reports.CONCLUSIONS The potential efficacy of buprenorphine is promising and should be further explored. A fiber-optic sensing system based on two types of ultra-weak fiber Bragg gratings (UWFBG) for simultaneous temperature and vibration sensing was proposed. Narrowband and broadband UWFBGs are alternately written into an optical fiber with equal spacing. Distributed temperature sensing is realized by demodulating the wavelength shift of the narrowband UWFBG, while distributed vibration sensing is achieved by detecting phase variation between two adjacent broadband UWFBG interference pulses. The experimental results show that the proposed hybrid UWFBG array can perform temperature and vibration sensing simultaneously. The experimentally conducted temperature measurement ranges from 20°C to 100°C, with the measurement error less than 0.1°C. Vibration signals at different temperatures can be accurately restored, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is improved by 21.1 dB compared with a normal single-mode fiber (SMF).Fourier optics is a powerful and efficient tool for solving many diffraction problems, but relies on the assumption of scalar diffraction theory and ignores the three-dimensional structure and material properties of the diffracting element. Recent experiments of sub-scale starshade external occulters revealed that the inclusion of these physical properties is necessary to explain the observed diffraction at 10-10 of the incident light intensity. Here, we present a methodology for implementing non-scalar diffraction while maintaining the efficiency and ease of standard Fourier optics techniques. Our methodology is based on that of Braunbek, in which the Kirchhoff boundary values are replaced with the exact field in a narrow seam surrounding the edge of the diffracting element. In this work, we present an upconversion scheme for detection in the silicon absorption band using magnesium-oxide doped periodically poled lithium niobate to generate 21 mW of a 3.4 µm signal from commercial laser sources using a difference frequency generation process. Following a further nonlinear frequency conversion, via sum-frequency generation, the resulting signal at 809 nm is detected. We achieve >50 µW of signal and bit error rates of 10-7 from a single-pass nonlinear conversion for both the transmitter and receiver systems without the need for additional optical amplifiers at the receiving end. The error rates due to potentially reduced laser powers at the receiver end are investigated and laser noise transfer through our system is discussed.Dark-field microscopy is a powerful technique for enhancing the imaging resolution and contrast of small unstained samples. In this study, we report a method based on end-to-end convolutional neural network to reconstruct high-resolution dark-field images from low-resolution bright-field images. The relation between bright- and dark-field which was difficult to deduce theoretically can be obtained by training the corresponding network. The training data, namely the matched bright- and dark-field images of the same object view, are simultaneously obtained by a special designed multiplexed image system. Since the image registration work which is the key step in data preparation is not needed, the manual error can be largely avoided. After training, a high-resolution numerical dark-field image is generated from a conventional bright-field image as the input of this network. We validated the method by the resolution test target and quantitative analysis of the reconstructed numerical dark-field images of biological tissues. The experimental results show that the proposed learning-based method can realize the conversion from bright-field image to dark-field image, so that can efficiently achieve high-resolution numerical dark-field imaging. The proposed network is universal for different kinds of samples. In addition, we also verify that the proposed method has good anti-noise performance and is not affected by the unstable factors caused by experiment setup.A custom fibre laser designed as an excitation source for biomedical photoacoustic tomography has been developed. It is based on a custom-drawn large core diameter fibre (200 µm) that enables high pulse energies (∼10 mJ) to be achieved. The system can provide variable pulse durations (10 - 500 ns) and pulse repetition frequencies (100 Hz - 1 kHz), as well as arbitrary pulse bursts according to specific user defined sequences. The system is also compact and does not require external water cooling. This, along with the flexibility in the temporal characteristics of its output that it offers, will aid the translation of photoacoustic imaging to practical application in medicine and biology.The development of new quantum light sources requires robust and convenient methods of characterizing their joint spectral properties. Measuring the joint spectral intensity between a photon pair ignores any correlations in spectral phase which may be responsible for degrading the quality of quantum interference. A fully phase-sensitive characterization tends to require significantly more experimental complexity. Here, we investigate the sensitivity of the frequency-resolved double-pair emission to spectral phase correlations, in particular to the presence of a simple form of correlated phase which can be generated by a chirped pump laser pulse. We observe interference fringes in the four photon coincidences which depend on the frequencies of all four photons, with a period which depends on the strength of their correlation. We also show that phase correlations in the JSA induce spectral intensity correlations between two signal photons, even when the corresponding idler photons are not detected, and link this correlation pattern to the purity of a single signal photon.

Evidence regarding the dose-related impact of doxorubicin on subsequent cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in Asian patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) without preexisting CVDs is lacking. From a territory-wide electronic database in Hong Kong, we identified adults who were diagnosed with DLBCL and treated with chemotherapy between 2000 and 2018. We evaluated the patients for incident CVDs (including ischemic heart disease, heart failure, and cardiomyopathy). We evaluated the cause-specific cumulative incidence (csCI) of CVD with levels of doxorubicin exposure by using flexible parametric competing risk analysis and adjusting for demographics, comorbidities, therapeutic exposure, cardiovascular risk factors, and lifestyle factors. Controls were age- and sex-matched to DLBCL patients. We analyzed 2600 patients and 13 000 controls. The adjusted cause-specific hazard ratio (HR) for CVD in patients treated with >500 mg doxorubicin compared with non-doxorubicin regimens was 2.65 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.23-5.74; P = .013). The 5-, 10-, and 15-year csCIs were 8.2%, 11.3%, and 12.8% in patients vs 3.1%, 4.4%, and 5.2% in controls, respectively. Hypertension (HR, 6.20; 95% CI, 0.79-48.44; P = .082) and use of aspirin/angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor/beta-blocker at baseline (HR, 2.13-4.63; P 500 mg), together with hypertension or baseline use of medication for cardiovascular risk factors, was found to be associated with an increase in csCIs of CVDs. Tailoring therapeutic strategies to underlying CVD risk factors and risk-adapted monitoring and follow-up of susceptible DLBCL patients are advisable.WHO recommends participatory learning and action cycles with women's groups as a cost-effective strategy to reduce neonatal deaths. Coverage is a determinant of intervention effectiveness, but little is known about why cost-effectiveness estimates vary significantly. This article reanalyses primary cost data from six trials in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Malawi to describe resource use, explore reasons for differences in costs and cost-effectiveness ratios, and model the cost of scale-up. Primary cost data were collated, and costing methods harmonized. Effectiveness was extracted from a meta-analysis and converted to neonatal life-years saved. Cost-effectiveness ratios were calculated from the provider perspective compared with current practice. Associations between unit costs and cost-effectiveness ratios with coverage, scale and intensity were explored. Scale-up costs and outcomes were modelled using local unit costs and the meta-analysis effect estimate for neonatal mortality. Results were expressed in 2016 international dollars. The average cost was $203 (range $61-$537) per live birth. Start-up costs were large, and spending on staff was the main cost component. The cost per neonatal life-year saved ranged from $135 to $1627. The intervention was highly cost-effective when using income-based thresholds. Variation in cost-effectiveness across trials was strongly correlated with costs. Removing discounting of costs and life-years substantially reduced all cost-effectiveness ratios. The cost of rolling out the intervention to rural populations ranges from 1.2% to 6.3% of government health expenditure in the four countries. Our analyses demonstrate the challenges faced by economic evaluations of community-based interventions evaluated using a cluster randomized controlled trial design. Our results confirm that women's groups are a cost-effective and potentially affordable strategy for improving birth outcomes among rural populations.
The optimal revascularization strategy for patients with ischaemic left ventricular systolic dysfunction (iLVSD) remains controversial. We aimed to compare percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and medical therapy (MT) in a network meta-analysis.
All randomized controlled trials and observational studies comparing any combination of PCI, CABG and MT in patients with iLVSD were analysed in a frequentist network meta-analysis (generic inverse variance method). Primary outcome was mortality at longest available follow-up. Secondary outcomes were cardiac death, stroke, myocardial infarction (MI) and repeat revascularization (RR).
Twenty-three studies were included (n = 23633; 4 randomized controlled trials). Compared to CABG, PCI was associated with higher mortality [incidence rate ratio (IRR) 1.32, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13-1.53], cardiac death (IRR 1.65, 95% CI 1.18-2.33), MI (IRR 2.18, 95% CI 1.70-2.80) and RR (IRR 3.75, 95% CI 2.89-4.85). Compared to CABG, MT was associated with higher mortality (IRR 1.52, 95% CI 1.26-1.84), cardiac death (IRR 3.83, 95% CI 2.12-6.91), MI (IRR 3.22, 95% CI 1.52-6.79) and RR (IRR 3.37, 95% CI 1.67-6.79). Compared to MT, PCI was associated with lower cardiac death (IRR 0.43, 95% CI 0.24-0.78). CABG ranked as the best revascularization strategy for mortality, cardiac death, MI and RR; MT ranked as the strategy associated with the lowest incidence of stroke. Left ventricular ejection fraction, year of study, use of drug-eluting stents did not affect relative treatment effects.
CABG appears to be the best therapy for iLVSD, although mainly based on observational data. Definitive randomized controlled trials comparing CABG and PCI in iLVSD are required.

Comparative fracture risk for non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) and vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) among patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) remains unclear. Our results confirm that women's groups are a cost-effective and potentially affordable strategy for improving birth outcomes among rural populations. The optimal revascularization strategy for patients with ischaemic left ventricular systolic dysfunction (iLVSD) remains controversial. We aimed to compare percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and medical therapy (MT) in a network meta-analysis. All randomized controlled trials and observational studies comparing any combination of PCI, CABG and MT in patients with iLVSD were analysed in a frequentist network meta-analysis (generic inverse variance method). Primary outcome was mortality at longest available follow-up. Secondary outcomes were cardiac death, stroke, myocardial infarction (MI) and repeat revascularization (RR). Twenty-three studies were included (n = 23633; 4 randomized controlled trials). Compared to CABG, PCI was associated with higher mortality [incidence rate ratio (IRR) 1.32, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13-1.53], cardiac death (IRR 1.65, 95% CI 1.18-2.33), MI (IRR 2.18, 95% CI 1.70-2.80) and RR (IRR 3.75, 95% CI 2.89-4.85). The American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) Annual Meeting provides a unique platform for the dissemination of research in laser and energy-based technologies, which are regularly utilized in cosmetic dermatology. We sought to elucidate the fate of the abstracts presented at ASLMS meetings over 3years.
We conducted a literature search for all abstracts presented at ASLMS meetings in 2013, 2014, and 2015 to determine publication rate, latency to publication, and journals of publication.
The publication rate of abstracts presented at the 2013, 2014, and 2015 ASLMS meetings was 50.3%, 49.1%, and 43.5%, respectively. Average latency to publication was 16.1months across these three years. Publication outcomes differed across general discipline, abstract type, poster category, clinical focus, and study design.
Our findings provide insight into the likelihood of publication, as well as potential contributing factors, for abstracts presented at ASLMS. With about half of all abstracts reaching publication, our study highlights the significant volume of research presented at this unique meeting that does not reach a broader audience through publication and thus is limited in its potential clinical applications in cosmetic dermatology.

The research area of ion clusters has helped to enrich the study of chemical bonding theory, clarify the crystal nucleation process and investigate the cluster ion-molecule reactions. The mass spectrometry (MS) technique, especially high-resolution MS, is an important method for investigating ion clusters in the gas phase. As polyoxometalates (POMs) have been attracting considerable interest in biochemistry, medicine and materials science due to their excellent structural and electronic features it is important to characterize these clusters by MS.
Singly negatively charged molybdenum-containing and tungsten-containing ion clusters with different matrices were produced by Keggin-type silicopolyoxometalate anions under matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (MALDI-FTICR MS) conditions.

For assay development, postmortem skin biopsies were taken from 28 patients with autopsy-confirmed Lewy body disease and 23 control subjects. Biopsies were stained for pathological alpha-synuclein in automated stainers using a novel dual-immunohistochemical assay for serine 129-phosphorylated alpha-synuclein and pan-neuronal marker protein gene product 9.5. Isometric (ISO) ****torque and the ratio of ISO torque in response to low- versus high-frequency stimulation (10100 Hz) were compared before and after (2-10 min and 2, 4, and 7 days) exercise. The decline in ECC and ISO ****torque and the 10100 Hz ratio following bout 1 did not differ between sexes (P > 0.05), with reductions from baseline of 31.5% ± 12.3%, 24.1% ± 15.4%, and 51.3% ± 12.2%, respectively. After bout 2, the 10100 Hz ratio declined less (45.0% ± 12.4% from baseline) and ISO ****torque recovered sooner compared with bout 1 but no differences between sexes were evident for the magnitude of the RBE (P > 0.05). A casualty of the misconduct at Harvard has been the SCIPIO trial, a collaboration between the Harvard group and the group in Louisville. The retraction of the SCIPIO paper was caused exclusively by issues with data generated at Harvard, not those generated in Louisville. In the retraction notice, the Lancet editors stated "Although we do not have any reservations about the clinical work in Louisville that used the preparations from Anversa's laboratory in good faith, the lack of reliability regarding the laboratory work at Harvard means that we are now retracting this paper". Results showed an irreversible upward trend in scores for feeding behavior and response to stimulus beginning 4 weeks prior to death, with significant changes in health and welfare scores between 4 weeks and the final week prior to death. This suggests that upward trends in these two variables predict death within 3-4 weeks.
