  • Arabinogalactans (AGs) are plant heteropolysaccharides with complex structures occasionally attached to proteins (AGPs). AGs in cell matrix of different parts of plant are freely available or chemically bound to pectin rhamnogalactan. Type I with predominantly β-d-(1 → 4)-galactan and type II with β-d-(1 → 3) and/or (1 → 6)-galactan structural backbones construct the two main groups of AGs. In the current review, the chemical structure of AGs is firstly discussed focusing on non-traditional plant sources and not including well known industrial gums. After that, processes for their extraction and purification are considered and finally their techno-functional and biological properties are highlighted. The role of AG structure and function on health advantages such as anti-tumor, antioxidant, anti-ulcer- anti-diabetic and other activites and also the immunomodulatory effects on in-vivo model systems are overviewed.
    To assess the effect of depression on all-cause mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) followed up during 8years in primary care in Spain.

    Depression was diagnosed according to MINI 5.0.0 questionnaire, physician-diagnosis or following antidepressant therapy for at least two months in 3923 people with T2DM. We analyzed mortality-rates/10,000 person-years. We compared survival according to baseline depression with Kaplan-Meier estimates and the log-rank test. We performed Cox proportional hazard model analyses.

    Baseline depression was diagnosed in 22.1% of participants. Mortality was higher in patients with depression (31.9% vs. 26.9%; p=0.003), who had a significantly poorer survival (median survival=7.4 vs. 7.8years, respectively; Log Rank=15.83; p<0.001). Depression showed an adjusted mortality hazard ratio (HR)=1.40 (95%CI1.20-1.65; p<0.001). The strongest predictive factors were age >75years (HR=6.04; 95%CI4.62-7.91; p<0.001), insulin use (HR=2.37; 95%CI1.86-3.00; p<0.001), lower limb amputation (HR=1.99; 95%CI1.28-3.11; p=0.002), heart failure (HR=1.94; 95%CI1.63-2.30; p<0.001), and male gender (HR=1.90; 95%CI1.59-2.27).

For constructing CBPH, the surface of BP was dual modified by PDA and HA, resulting in enhanced stability, tumor target ability and photothermal efficiency of BP. Cisplatin was released in response both to internal and external stimuli existed in tumor microenvironment, including low pH, hydrogen peroxide and NIR light, as accompanied by decomposition of BP. In vitro experiments demonstrated CBPH-treated 4 T1 cells showed elevated intracellular content of Pt and Pt-DNA adduct, which was further improved when exposure to NIR light, leading to potent antitumor effect in a synergistic pattern. Anti-metastasis studies in 2D monolayers and 3D organoids revealed that CBPH plus NIR light treatment exhibited significantly decreased migration, invasion and regrowth ability of 4 T1 cells. Furthermore, TNBC-bearing **** with systemic administrate of CBPH showed enhanced tumor accumulation of cisplatin and light-triggered inhibition of tumor growth at primary site and lung metastasis, with alleviated toxicity. But CBPH is yet to be optimized for realizing smart cisplatin delivery in response to acidic and redox stimuli in vivo. Collectively, our study demonstrates that this novel BP-based nano-assembly with controllable tumor delivery of cisplatin and metastasis inhibition of breast cancer expand the use of BP in biomedicine field and hold great promise for further development.
    A single‑lead implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) with a floating atrial dipole has been developed to enhance the diagnostic capability of atrial arrhythmias and to facilitate adjudication of arrhythmic events without the additional effort required for atrial lead insertion. However, there have been concerns about the long-term reliability of atrial sensing.

    We enrolled patients with the single-chamber ICD with atrial-sensing electrodes from 4 tertiary university hospitals in Korea. Minimal, maximal, and mean P wave amplitudes were collected at 3-6 months, 6-12 months, and 12-24 months after implantation. The difference between the minimal and maximal sensing amplitudes was calculated as an indicator of the variability of atrial sensing, while the atrial sensing stability was assessed using the mean amplitude.

    Choledochal cysts (CC) are rare cystic dilatation of the biliary trees. Malignancy is one of the important significant findings in CC and its incidence increases with age. Associated squamous cell carcinoma of the choledochal cyst is an uncommon pathological finding.

    We present a 21-year-old male diagnosed with type 1 CC and planned for excision of the cystic dilated extrahepatic biliary tract with hepaticojejunal anastomosis in Roux-en-Y but underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy due to intraoperative palpable mass of CC which was adhered to the duodenum and pancreatic head. Histopathology of the excised specimen revealed squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the choledochal cyst.

    CC represents a rare biliary cystic disease. Though infrequent, malignant transformation in CC includes cholangiocarcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and rarely SCC. The post-operative management for SCC in CC is ill-defined and carries a grave prognosis.

    Acute subdural hematoma in infants is often due to non-accidental causes such as shaken baby syndrome or abuse. Occasionally a rupture of the cerebral bridge veins after ventricular puncture can lead to a subdural hematoma in infant. In this article we report the very first case of acute subdural hematoma after ventricular puncture of cerebrospinal fluid.

    It is a 40-day-old male infant received at the pediatric emergency room for an infectious syndrome. An etiological assessment was carried out including a ventricular puncture of the cerebrospinal fluid. Two days after the puncture, the child develops a sudden alteration of consciousness during hospitalization, with a Blantyre coma score of 3/5. The CT scan performed showed a right subdural parieto-temporal hematoma associated with a right fronto-temporal parietal parenchymal hypodensity. A right temporo-parietal decompressive craniectomy was performed with evacuation of the acute subdural hematoma. Clinical improvement was obtained and the child was discharged after 3 weeks of hospitalization.

    Acute subdural hematoma post ventricular puncture is rarely reported in the literature. The mechanism would probably be a rupture of the bridging veins by sudden collapse of the parenchyma following rapid and excessive aspiration of cerebrospinal fluid. Its management is medico-surgical. This manuscript further demonstrates the importance of mastering the ventricular puncture technique which must be performed by an experienced neurosurgeon.

  • We present a dual-frequency laser Doppler velocimeter (DF-LDV) relying on a DF laser source (DFLS) generated by optical phase-locking two individual lasers to a common unbalanced ****-Zehnder interferometer, which allows achieving high stability regardless of the DF separation of the lasers. This DFLS is evaluated using an optical frequency comb, testifying to the generation of DFLS with large DF separation up to terahertz with flexible tunability and high stability. We attribute the successful generalization to the ability of a pixel-wise architecture to learn local properties of the meta-material, therefore mimicking faithfully the underlying physical process. In addition, measurements of sample gases with 14CO2 concentrations as low as 100 parts-per-trillion (ppt) are presented. The Allan deviation demonstrates a noise equivalent concentration of 30 ppt at an averaging time of 9 min. The achieved sensitivity validates this method as a suitable alternative to more complex optical detection methods for radiocarbon dioxide detection used so far, and it can be envisioned for future in situ radiocarbon detection.We employ transformation optics to study analytically nonlinear wave mixing from a singular geometry of touching plasmonic wires. The energy harvester generates electricity from ambient light to directly turn the transmitter on. By integrating a circuit, the electrical signals generated by the receiver pulse the emitted light to relay information.
    We present a dual-frequency laser Doppler velocimeter (DF-LDV) relying on a DF laser source (DFLS) generated by optical phase-locking two individual lasers to a common unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer, which allows achieving high stability regardless of the DF separation of the lasers. This DFLS is evaluated using an optical frequency comb, testifying to the generation of DFLS with large DF separation up to terahertz with flexible tunability and high stability.   • Legislation frequently restricts the use of cellphones while driving. Despite this, many people continue to interact with cellphones covertly while driving, typically by concealing their device in their lap. This strategy leads to frequent diversion of the drivers' gaze from the road ahead, potentially reducing their driving performance. To evaluate the influence of cellphone use on driving, 30 participants took part in three randomly ordered 7-min virtual reality driving simulations. In each condition, drivers were presented with either (a) no cellphone, (b) a cellphone fixed to the windscreen, or (c) a cellphone positioned at lap level. Their task was to maintain road position and observe speed limits while answering maths problems (delivered intermittently via 'text message') and searching for external target objects. Outcome measures included speed, lane position standard deviation (LPSD), and fixation behaviour, which were compared between trials. In trials where a cellphone was present, participants shifted fixation more frequently, drove approximately 6 km/h faster, exhibited a lower LPSD and spent more time in the correct lane on the road (compared to the no-cellphone condition; all p  less then  0.001). Cellphone position influenced eye gaze behaviour, with drivers looking at the cellphone less frequently, and the speedometer more frequently. when the cellphone was in their lap compared to when the cellphone was positioned on the windscreen. Our results are consistent with participants driving more cautiously-checking speed and lane position more frequently-when they have a cellphone in the lap. Real-world driving data would be useful to determine whether this change in driving behaviour we observed is sufficient to offset the increased risk introduced by spending less time looking at the road ahead.The Andean Altiplano-Puna is located at an elevation of approximately 4000 m.a.s.l. and is delineated by the Western and the Eastern Andes Cordillera. The high-altitude wetlands (HAWs) in the Central Andes are unique ecosystems located in the Altiplano that provide many ecosystem services. The objective of this study was to characterize the spatial heterogeneity of the environmental conditions associated with varying hydrology of the HAW, Salar de Tara, in the Andean Altiplano. Sediment samples of up to 20 cm in depth were obtained from various salt flat sub-environments. The samples were analyzed using proxies for mineralogical and chemical composition, thermal analysis, and magnetic susceptibility. Diatom and ostracod communities were also identified and analyzed. The results reflected changes in the geochemistry, carbon content, mineralogy, and magnetic properties of the sediments that can be explained by variations in the sources of water input to the Salar de Tara. We show that natural human movements are statistically diverse, and the spread of the disease is significantly influenced by a small group of active individuals and gathering venues. We find that interventions focused on these most mobile individuals and popular venues reduce both the peak infection rate and the total infected population while retaining high social activity levels. These trends are seen consistently in simulations with real human mobility data of different scales, resolutions, and modalities from multiple cities across the world. The observation implies that compared to broad sweeping interventions, more heterogeneous strategies that are targeted based on the network effects in human mobility provide a better balance between pandemic control and regular social activities.The performance of current machine learning methods to detect heterogeneous pathology is limited by the quantity and quality of pathology in medical images. A possible solution is anomaly detection; an approach that can detect all abnormalities by learning how 'normal' tissue looks like. In this work, we propose an anomaly detection method using a neural network architecture for the detection of chronic brain infarcts on brain MR images. The neural network was trained to learn the visual appearance of normal appearing brains of 697 patients. We evaluated its performance on the detection of chronic brain infarcts in 225 patients, which were previously labeled. Our proposed method detected 374 chronic brain infarcts (68% of the total amount of brain infarcts) which represented 97.5% of the total infarct volume. Additionally, 26 new brain infarcts were identified that were originally missed by the radiologist during radiological reading. Our proposed method also detected white matter hyperintensities, anomalous calcifications, and imaging artefacts. This work shows that anomaly detection is a powerful approach for the detection of multiple brain abnormalities, and can potentially be used to improve the radiological workflow efficiency by guiding radiologists to brain anomalies which otherwise remain unnoticed.In this study, talc-supported nano-galvanic Sn doped nZVI (Talc-nZVI/Sn) bimetallic particles were successfully synthesized and utilized for Cr(VI) remediation. The formation of numerous nano-galvanic cells between nZVI core and Sn shell enhanced the potential of bimetallic particles in Cr(VI) mitigation. Moreover, batch experiments were carried out to investigate optimum conditions for Cr(VI) elimination and total Cr(VI) removal was achieved in 20 min using Sn/Fe mass ratio of 6/1, the adsorbent dosage of 2 g/L, initial Cr(VI) concentration of 80 mg/L, at the acidic environment (pH = 5) and temperature of 303 K. Besides, co-existing of metallic cations turned out to facilitate the electron transfer from the nano-galvanic couple of NZVI/Sn, and suggested the revolution of bimetallic particles to trimetallic composites.

    There is increasing evidence that adipocytes play an active role in the cancer microenvironment. We have previously reported that adipocytes interact with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells, contributing to chemotherapy resistance and treatment failure. In the present study, we investigated whether part of this resistance is due to adipocyte provision of lipids to ALL cells.

    We cultured 3T3-L1 adipocytes, and tested whether ALL cells or ALL-released cytokines induced FFA release. We investigated whether ALL cells took up these FFA, and using fluorescent tagged BODIPY-FFA and lipidomics, evaluated which lipid moieties were being transferred from adipocytes to ALL. We evaluated the effects of adipocyte-derived lipids on ALL cell metabolism using a Seahorse XF analyzer and expression of enzymes important for lipid metabolism, and tested whether these lipids could protect ALL cells from chemotherapy. Finally, we evaluated a panel of lipid synthesis and metabolism inhibitors to determine which were affecings uncover a previously unidentified interaction between ALL cells and adipocytes, leading to transfer of FFA for use as a metabolic fuel and macromolecule building block. This interaction may contribute to ALL resistance to chemotherapy, and could potentially be targeted to improve ALL treatment outcome.

    We developed a 4D interplay effect model to quantitatively evaluate breathing-induced interplay effects and assess the feasibility of utilizing spot-scanning proton arc (SPArc) therapy for hypo-fractionated lung stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). The model was then validated by retrospective application to clinical cases.

We present our preliminary experience comparing ioUS-assisted resection assessment to early post-operative MRI findings in 154 consecutive brain tumor resections at our pediatric neurosurgical unit. A high concordance was observed between ioUS and post-operative MRI. We have previously reported that adipocytes interact with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells, contributing to chemotherapy resistance and treatment failure. In the present study, we investigated whether part of this resistance is due to adipocyte provision of lipids to ALL cells. We cultured 3T3-L1 adipocytes, and tested whether ALL cells or ALL-released cytokines induced FFA release. We investigated whether ALL cells took up these FFA, and using fluorescent tagged BODIPY-FFA and lipidomics, evaluated which lipid moieties were being transferred from adipocytes to ALL. We evaluated the effects of adipocyte-derived lipids on ALL cell metabolism using a Seahorse XF analyzer and expression of enzymes important for lipid metabolism, and tested whether these lipids could protect ALL cells from chemotherapy. The model was then validated by retrospective application to clinical cases. A digital lung 4DCT phantoms was used to mimic targets in diameter of 3cm with breathing motion amplitudes 5, 10, 15, and 20mm, respectively. This association has generated considerable interest and hundreds of trials are currently ongoing to assess such an association in oncology. Questions remain, therefore, as to how to optimize the combination of these treatment modalities. Blocking GABAB receptors also resulted in a reduced sPCI, in particular when in a synchronous, slow waences cortical complexity. Drawing on object recognition theories, we hypothesized two routes to multiattribute evaluation assessing the value of the whole object based on holistic attribute configuration or summing individual attribute values. In two samples of healthy human male and female participants undergoing eye tracking and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while evaluating novel pseudo objects, we found evidence for both forms of evaluation. Fixations to and transitions between attributes differed systematically when the value of pseudo objects was associated with individual attributes or attribute configurations. Ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and perirhinal cortex were engaged when configural processing was required. These results converge with our recent findings that individuals with vmPFC lesions were impaired in decisions requiring configural evaluation but not when evaluating the sumridge between the study of object recognition and reward-guided decision-making.Early postnatal experience shapes both inhibitory and excitatory networks in the hippocampus.   • OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of antibacterial Salvadora persica stick on the colonization of oral pathogens in patients with mechanical ventilation. METHOD This research is quasi-experimental research with pre-test-post-test design. Oral care was administered every 12h on patients who required mechanical ventilation for less than 24h. The colonization of oral pathogen assessment was conducted with swab oral treatment before and 48h after mechanical ventilation. The data obtained were analyzed with a paired t-test. RESULTS The results of this research showed that the antibacterial effect of S. persica stick was significant in preventing the increase in the amount of oral pathogen colonization in mechanically ventilated patients (p less then 0.05). The colonization of oral pathogens decreased from 48×106CFU/ml to 14×106CFU/ml. CONCLUSION Oral care with S. persica can serve as a complementary therapy for patients with mechanical ventilation. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to analyze the risk factors for the incidence of diabetic foot infection (DFI) in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) type II. METHOD This was a cross-sectional approach with a total sample of 53 DM type II patients with DFU that being obtained through accidental sampling technique. Data were analyzed in univariate, bivariate, and multivariate. RESULTS Neuropathy was found as a risk factor for infection (p=0.032, OR=10.58), as well as bacterial count (p=0.043). Those risk factors were directly proportional to the incidence of infection. CONCLUSION Neuropathy and bacterial counts on the surface of the wound can be used as indicator of DFI. OBJECTIVE The aging process causes a setback of various aspects of the body that makes the elderly vulnerable to fall. The dual-task exercise amalgamates physical and cognitive training together and induces synergistic effects. This study aims to determine the effect of dual-task training on the risk of falls on elderly. METHOD The method used was pre-experimental design with 3 times a week intervention for 4 weeks. Before and after treatment, respondents measured the level of balance and risk of falling using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed-Up-and-Go test (TUGT), and Tinetti Balance Assessment Tool. RESULTS The results showed an increase in the balance after 12 times of exercises. The risk of falls seems to decline after 12 treatments, and the highest reduction occurred after the first 6 treatments. CONCLUSION It can be concluded that dual-task motor-cognitive training is significantly influential in reducing risk falls on elderly. METHOD This research was a cross-sectional study conducted at the Central General Hospital in eastern Indonesia, pressure assessment measured with interface pressure (the Palm Q, Cape Co. Ltd., Yokosuka, Japan) with five sensors. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 24 statistical test to evaluate the value of interclass correlation coefficients (ICC). RESULTS The intrarater reliability test between three different measurements discovered a good reliability between nurses at three different wards. Regarding to working experience, the intrarater reliability test between three different measurements also found a satisfied reliability, except in neurology ward. CONCLUSION Palm Q sensor has an excellent reliability as interface pressure sensor in clinical setting. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the association of characteristics and history of obstetrics with hypertension in pregnancy. METHODS The study design was cross-sectional with total sample of 100 pregnant women, 50 normal tension and 50 hypertension in pregnancy. They were selected by purposive sampling. Inclusion criteria were gestational age of more than 20 weeks, and exclusion criteria were essential hypertension, pregnancy gemeli, pregnant mola, diabetes mellitus, and kidney pain. Data collected directly by the researcher include characteristics of age, work status, education, income and income of husband. The obstetric history consists of a history of preeclampsia/eclampsia, history of abortion, parity, pregnancy plan, and gestational distance. Bivariate analysis was used to measure the association of characteristic and obstetric history with hypertension in pregnancy. RESULTS There was no correlation between age, working status, education level, income, and husband's income with hypertension in pregnancy where p>0.05 for each variable. There was a significant association between obstetric history of pre-eclampsia history with hypertension in pregnancy (OR 10,286; 95% IK 2,209-47,901; p=0.001). CONCLUSION Hypertension in pregnancy was associated with a history of pre-eclampsia. L.U.OBJECTIVE This study was to determine the accuracy of using Ipswich Touch Test (IpTT) in detecting neuropathy in patients with small fiber and large fiber neuropathy. METHOD This was a cross sectional multisite study approach. The number of samples in this study were one hundred participants. CONCLUSION There is no difference between the IpTT against the golden standard small fiber neuropathy large fiber neuropathy. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of music therapy on the level of difficulty in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS This study was a quasi-experiment with nonprobability sampling technique consisting of 60 participants, divided into intervention groups and control groups of 30 samples for each based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. RESULTS The three sessions of music therapy are significantly reducing the anxiety level of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy (p less then 0.001) in the intervention group. Meanwhile, no significant reducing of anxiety among the control group (p=0.139). CONCLUSION Music therapy is effective in reducing anxiety levels of cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy.

CONCLUSION Palm Q sensor has an excellent reliability as interface pressure sensor in clinical setting. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the association of characteristics and history of obstetrics with hypertension in pregnancy. METHODS The study design was cross-sectional with total sample of 100 pregnant women, 50 normal tension and 50 hypertension in pregnancy. They were selected by purposive sampling. Inclusion criteria were gestational age of more than 20 weeks, and exclusion criteria were essential hypertension, pregnancy gemeli, pregnant mola, diabetes mellitus, and kidney pain. Data collected directly by the researcher include characteristics of age, work status, education, income and income of husband. The obstetric history consists of a history of preeclampsia/eclampsia, history of abortion, parity, pregnancy plan, and gestational distance. Bivariate analysis was used to measure the association of characteristic and obstetric history with hypertension in pregnancy. RESULTS There was no correlation between age, working status, education level, income, and husband's income with hypertension in pregnancy where p>0.05 for each variable. There was a significant association between obstetric history of pre-eclampsia history with hypertension in pregnancy (OR 10,286; 95% IK 2,209-47,901; p=0.001). CONCLUSION Hypertension in pregnancy was associated with a history of pre-eclampsia. L.U.OBJECTIVE This study was to determine the accuracy of using Ipswich Touch Test (IpTT) in detecting neuropathy in patients with small fiber and large fiber neuropathy. METHOD This was a cross sectional multisite study approach. The number of samples in this study were one hundred participants. METHODS This study was a quasi-experiment with nonprobability sampling technique consisting of 60 participants, divided into intervention groups and control groups of 30 samples for each based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. RESULTS The three sessions of music therapy are significantly reducing the anxiety level of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy (p less then 0.001) in the intervention group. Meanwhile, no significant reducing of anxiety among the control group (p=0.139). CONCLUSION Music therapy is effective in reducing anxiety levels of cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy.

  • The impacts of environmental pollutants on marine organisms can be determined by the routes of exposure. Various routes of exposure, including dietary exposure and waterborne exposure with or without feeding, were applied to study the cytogenetic responses in marine mussels Mytilus galloprovincials to typical pollutants, BaP (53.74 ± 19.79 μg/L) and Cu (47.38 ± 3.10 μg/L). The increased DNA strand breaks and micronucleus formation were found in haemocytes of mussels via the dietary exposure, indicating the vital role of trophic transfer in toxicity induction. The deeper exploration to relate BaP induced cytogenetic alterations with key antioxidant defense factors, *** and GST, was performed under different exposure routes. The results revealed the significantly inhibited *** activity via the trophic transfer, suggesting more direct or prompt role of *** in antioxidant defense. On contrary, gene expressions of both *** and gst were up-regulated upon all routes of exposures, and showed negative correlation with enzyme activities. The results suggested the asynchronous regulation of studied antioxidant factors at transcriptional and enzyme functional level in mussels upon the change of exposure routes. The study brings out the first observation of trophic transfer influenced cytogenetic and antioxidant responses to pollutants and their alterative risk to marine organisms. The Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) has experienced rapid atmospheric and ocean warming over the past few decades and many marine-terminating glaciers have considerably retreated. Glacial retreat is accompanied by fresh meltwater intrusion, which may result in the freshening and acidification of coastal waters. Marian Cove (**), on King George Island in the WAP, undergoes one of the highest rates of glacial retreat. Intertidal and shallow subtidal waters are likely more susceptible to these processes, and sensitive biological responses are expected from the organisms inhabiting this area. The gammarid amphipod Gondogeneia antarctica is one of the most abundant species in the shallow, nearshore Antarctic waters, and it occupies an essential ecological niche in the coastal marine WAP ecosystem. In this study, we tested the sensitivity of G. antarctica to lowered salinity and pH by meltwater intrusion following glacial retreat. We exposed G. antarctica to four different treatments combining two salinities (34 and 27 psu) and pH (8.0 and 7.6) levels for 26 days. Mortality, excluding cannibalized individuals, increased under low pH but decreased under low salinity conditions. Meanwhile, low salinity increased cannibalism, whereas low pH reduced food detection. Shelter use during the daytime decreased under each low salinity and pH condition, indicating that the two stressors act as disruptors of amphipod behavior. Under low salinity conditions, swimming increased during the daytime but decreased at night. Although interactions between low salinity and low pH were not observed during the experiment, the results suggest that each stressor, likely induced by glacial melting, causes altered behaviors in amphipods. These environmental factors may threaten population persistence in Marian Cove and possibly other similar glacial embayments. Opportunistic green macroalgae blooms increasingly affect coastal areas worldwide. Understanding their impacts on organisms that use this zone, such as juvenile flatfish, is critical. By combining stable isotope data, digestive tract contents and community analyses of flatfish and their potential prey (benthic macroinvertebrates) from two North-East Atlantic sandy beaches (one impacted by blooms and one not), we detected similar and species-specific trophic changes among three co-occurring species (sand sole, plaice and turbot). Across flatfish species, juveniles displayed more opportunistic foraging behavior at the impacted site. Differently, plaice and sand sole relied more on the additional basal resource (Ulva spp.) than turbot. Finally, sand sole and turbot presented a stronger diet shift at the impacted site than plaice. We hypothesize that the species-specific response to the blooms are mostly driven by how the flatfish detect their prey (using visual and/or chemical cues) and when they forage (diurnal or nocturnal foraging). This study aimed to add light-avoidance as a categorizing technique for the study of mesopelagic acoustic layers. Data recorded along the 20° W parallel from 20° N to Iceland showed three types of mesopelagic layers the non-avoiding non-migrant deep scattering layer (NMDSL), which dropped its intensity toward the north, the avoiding migrating fish layers (MDSL), which were more intense at upwelling areas and toward the north, and a secondary deeper NMDSL at the southern part. Light avoidance was only discernible at 18 kHz within the main NMDSL when this layer was intense, suggesting that migrants are barely seen at 38 kHz when other resonant scatterers occupy these depths. In this study, the density and size of the upside-down jellyfish (Cassiopea spp.) were measured in Codrington Lagoon, Barbuda. A sediment core incubation study, with and without Cassiopea, also was performed to determine their impact on benthic oxygen and nutrient fluxes. Densities of Cassiopea were 24-168 m-2, among the highest reported values in the literature. Under illuminated conditions, Cassiopea increased oxygen production >300% compared to sediment alone, and they changed sediments from net heterotrophy to net autotrophy. Cassiopea increased benthic ammonium uptake, but reduced nitrate uptake, suggesting they can significantly alter nitrogen cycling.

We examined which parameter had the greatest impact on that ratio and whether the parameter influences depended on the state of each other. Results show that pH had a greater influence than acetate supply on the ratio of iron to sulfate reduction, and that the impact of acetate supply on the ratio depended on pH. In acidic reactors (pH 6.0 media), the ratio of iron to sulfate reduction decreased from 31 to 21 as acetate supply increased (0-1 mM). In alkaline reactors (pH 7.5 media), iron and sulfate were reduced in equal proportions, regardless of acetate supply. Secondly, a comparison of experiments with and without sulfate shows that the extent of iron reduction was greater if sulfate reduction was occurring and that the effect was larger in alkaline reactors than acidic reactors. Thus, the influence of sulfate supply on iron reduction extent also depended on pH and suggests that iron reduction grows more dependent on sulfate reduction as pH increases.
